முதல் பார்வை: 83 - ஒரு 'விளையாட்டான' பொழுதுபோக்கு சினிமா!

1983-ஆம் ஆண்டு இங்கிலாந்தின் லார்ட்ஸ் மைதானத்தில் மேற்கிந்திய அணிகளுக்கு எதிராக இந்தியா பெற்ற வரலாற்று சிறப்புமிக்க வெற்றியை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு வெளியாகியுள்ளது ‘83’. சினிமா ரசிகர்கள் மட்டுமின்றி, கிரிக்கெட் பிரியர்களும் மிகவும் எதிர்பார்த்த இப்படம் நிறைவாக இருந்ததா? - இதோ முதல் பார்வை...

கபில் தேவ் (ரன்வீர் சிங்) தலைமையிலான இந்திய அணி உலகக் கோப்பை கிரிக்கெட் தொடருக்காக இங்கிலாந்து பயணிக்கிறது. ஆரம்பம் முதலே உள்ளூர்க்காரர்கள் முதல் வெளிநாட்டு பத்திரிகையாளர்கள் வரை இந்திய அணியின் மீது அவநம்பிக்கையை வெளிப்படுத்தி வருகின்றனர். அரை இறுதி ஆட்டத்துக்கு முன்பாகவே ரிட்டர்ன் டிக்கெட் கூட போட்டு விடுகின்றனர். மைதானத்திலேயே இந்தியாவைச் சேர்ந்து கிரிக்கெட் ரசிகர்கள் கபில் தேவின் காதுபடவே கேவலமாக பேசுகின்றனர். அந்தளவுக்கு இந்திய அணி என்றாலே அனைவரும் இளக்காரமாக பார்க்கின்றனர். எனினும் கேப்டன் கபில் தேவ் தன் அணியின் மீது நம்பிக்கை இழக்காமல் இருக்கிறார்.

அனைத்து அவநம்பிக்கைகளையும் பொய்யாக்கும் வகையில் முதல் இரண்டு மேட்ச்களில் வெற்றிபெற்று அனைவரையும் ஆச்சர்யத்தில் ஆழ்த்துகிறது இந்திய அணி. தொடர்ந்து ஒவ்வொரு ஆட்டமாக முன்னேறி இறுதி ஆட்டத்தில் வென்று உலகக் கோப்பையை இந்திய அணி எப்படி வென்றது என்பதே ‘83’ படத்தின் கதை.

அனைவருக்கும் தெரிந்த கதையை படமாக்குவது என்பதே ஒரு சவால். அதிலும் நாடே பெருமை கொண்ட ஒரு தருணத்தை படமாக்குவது என்பது கூடுதல் சவால். இந்த சவாலை இந்திய ரசிகர்களுக்கு ஏற்ற வகையில் திரைப்படமாக கொடுத்ததில் இயக்குநர் கபிர் கான் ஓரளவு வெற்றியும் பெறுகிறார்.

படத்தில் பாராட்டுவதற்கான விஷயங்கள் அநேகம் உண்டு. முதலில் ரன்வீர் சிங். படத்தில் எந்தக் காட்சியிலும் திரையில் இருப்பவர் ரன்வீர் என்ற உணர்வே பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு எழாமல் கபில் தேவாகவே வாழ்ந்திருக்கிறார். நடை, உடை, பேச்சு, உடல்மொழி என அனைத்தையும் கபில் தேவிடமிருந்து அப்படியே நகலெடுத்து நடித்திருக்கிறார். அடுத்து படத்தின் ஒளிப்பதிவு. ஒரு ஸ்போர்ட்ஸ் டிராமாவுக்கான கச்சிதமான ஒளிப்பதிவை அசீம் மிஸ்ராவின் கேமரா அற்புதமாக படமாக்கியுள்ளது. ஒரு கிரிக்கெட் போட்டியை பார்க்கும் பார்வையாளனின் உணர்வை படத்தை பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் ரசிகனுக்கு கடத்துவது எளிதல்ல. உதாரணம் மேற்கிந்திய அணியின் பவுலிங் காட்சிகள்.

படத்தில் பாராட்டப்படுவதற்கான விஷயங்கள் இருக்கும் அதே அளவுக்கு குறைகளும் உண்டு. முக்கியமாக படம் முழுக்க பயணிக்கும் சினிமாத்தனம். ஒரு பயோபிக்கையோ அல்லது ஒரு பிரபலமான தருணத்தை பதிவு செய்யும்போது இருக்கவேண்டிய குறைந்தபட்ச இயல்புத்தன்மை கூட பல காட்சிகளில் இல்லை. ஆங்காங்கே காமெடி என்கிற பெயரில் அவர்களே ஜோக் சொல்லி சிரித்துக் கொள்கிறார்கள். ஜீவா தொடர்பான நகைச்சுவைக் காட்சிகள் மட்டுமே விதிவிலக்கு. பார்வையாளர்களை வலிந்து எமோஷனலாக்க முயற்சிக்கும் வசனங்கள் பல இடங்களில் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஒரு ஸ்போர்ட்ஸ் டிராமா எனும்போது காட்சி வழியே பார்ப்பவர்களை உணர்வுப்பூர்வமாக அணுக வேண்டுமே தவிர வசனங்களை இட்டு நிரப்பக் கூடாது. ‘டங்கல்’, ‘சக் தே இந்தியா’, ‘சார்பட்டா பரம்பரை’ படங்களை இதற்கு உதாரணமாக சொல்லலாம்.

ரன்வீர் தவிர்த்து படத்தில் பாராட்டப்பட வேண்டியவர்கள் மான் சிங்காக வரும் பங்கஜ் திரிபாதியும், கிருஷ்ணமாச்சாரி ஸ்ரீகாந்த்தாக நடித்துள்ள ஜீவாவும். இருவருமே தாங்கள் வரும் அனைத்து காட்சிகளிலும் அலட்சியமாக ஸ்கோர் செய்து மற்றவர்களை ஓரங்கட்டி விடுகிறார்கள். தீபிகா படுகோனே அழகாக இருக்கிறார். நடிக்க பெரிதாக எந்த காட்சியும் இல்லை. இசை, எடிட்டிங் என டெக்னிக்கல் அம்சங்கள் அனைத்தும் படத்தை தூக்கி நிறுத்த கைகொடுத்துள்ளன.

ஸ்போர்ட்ஸ் படங்களில் இறுதியில் கதாபாத்திரங்கள் பெறும் வெற்றி பார்வையாளனுக்கும் பாதிப்பையும் ஏற்படுத்த வேண்டும். அந்த வெற்றியை நம் வெற்றியாக நினைக்க வைக்க வேண்டும். அப்படி எந்தவொரு உணர்வையும் படம் ஏற்படுத்தவில்லை. 1983 கிரிக்கெட் தொடர்பாக வாய்வழியாக கேட்ட விஷயங்களை அப்படியே காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருப்பதும் பெரிதாக எடுபடவில்லை.

கிரிக்கெட்டை வைத்து மதக்கலவரத்தை கட்டுப்படுத்துவது, இளவயது சச்சின், உண்மையான கபில் தேவ் கேமியோ என பல சுவாரஸ்யமான காட்சிகள் மூலம் படத்தை போரடிக்காமல் கொண்டு சென்றுள்ளார் இயக்குநர்.

இது மோசமான படமா என்றால் நிச்சயமாக இல்லை. ஒரு ஸ்போர்ட்ஸ் படத்தில் பார்வையாளனுக்கு இருக்கவேண்டிய எமோஷனல் தொடர்பு இல்லை என்பதைத் தாண்டி போரடிக்காத ஒரு பொழுதுபோக்கு சினிமா இந்த ‘83’.

இயக்கம் - கபீர்கான் இசை - ஜுலியஸ் பாக்கியம், ப்ரீத்தம் நடிப்பு - ரன்வீர் சிங், தீபிகா படுகோனே, ஜீவா வெளியான தேதி - 24 டிசம்பர் 2021 நேரம் - 2 மணி நேரம் 41 நிமிடம் ரேட்டிங் - 4/5 இந்தியத் திரையுலக வரலாற்றில் இதற்கு முன்பு இப்படி ஒரு உண்மை நிகழ்வு படமாக்கப்பட்டதில்லை என்று தான் சொல்ல வேண்டும். 1983ம் ஆண்டு கபில் தேவ் தலைமையிலான இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் அணி முதல் முறையாக ஒரு நாள் உலகக் கோப்பையைக் கைப்பற்றியதை அப்படியே நம் கண்முன் கொண்டு வந்து நிறுத்தியிருக்கிறார்கள். அப்போது சிறுவர்களாக, இளைஞர்களாக இருந்தவர்கள் மீண்டும் அந்தக் கால ஞாபகத்தை அசை போட்டு பார்க்கலாம். அப்போது பிறக்காதவர்கள், அந்த வரலாற்று நிகழ்வு எப்படி நடந்தது என்பதை பார்த்துத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளலாம். ஒரு உலகக் கோப்பை கிரிக்கெட் ஆட்டங்களை நம் கண்முன் அப்படியே கொண்டு வருவது சாதாரண விஷயமல்ல. அப்போது கலந்து கொண்ட கிரிக்கெட் அணிகள், இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் வீரர்கள், அப்போது மைதானத்தில் பார்த்த ரசிகர்கள், அந்தக் காலகட்டம் என அனைத்தையும் அப்படியே யதார்த்தமாய் பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர் கபீர் கான்.

இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் அணிக்கு முதல் முறையாக உலகக் கோப்பையை பெற்றுத் தந்த கபில்தேவ் தான் இந்தப் படத்தின் மையக் கதாபாத்திரம். அந்தக் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் ரன்வீர் சிங், அப்படியே கபில்தேவாகவே மாறிவிட்டாரோ என்று ஆச்சரியப்படும் அளவிற்கு நடித்திருக்கிறார். கபில்தேவுக்கு அவ்வளவாக ஆங்கிலம் பேச வராது. மேல் உதட்டைக் கடித்துக் கொண்டது போல பேசுவார். அவருடைய ஹேர்ஸ்டைல், மீசை எல்லாம் அந்தக் காலத்தில் அவ்வளவு பிரபலம். அவருடைய பவுலிங் ஆக்ஷன் அசத்தலாய் இருக்கும். இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் அணியில் முதன் முதலாக சாதனை புரிந்த வேகப்பந்து வீச்சாளர். அப்படிப்பட்ட சாதனையாளர் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் ஒரு காட்சியில் கூட ரன்வீர் சிங் என்ற நடிகர் தெரியவேயில்லை, கபில்தேவ் மட்டுமே தெரிந்தார். கபில்தேவ் மனைவி ரோமியாக இடைவேளைக்குப் பின்னர் தான் தீபிகா படுகோனே வருகிறார். கொஞ்சமாக வந்தாலும் கபில்தேவுக்கு ஊக்கமளிக்கும் வார்த்தைகளைச் சொல்லி உலகக் கோப்பை வெல்லக் காரணமாக இருக்கிறார். அணி மேலாளர் மான்சிங் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் பங்கஜ் த்ரிபாதி. இன்று பல்லாயிரம் கோடிகளுக்கு சொந்தமாக இருக்கும் இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் போர்டு, அந்தக் காலத்தில் இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் அணி வீரர்களுக்கு எவ்வளவு கஷ்டங்களைக் கொடுத்துள்ளது என்பதை இவரது கதாபாத்திரம் உணர்த்துகிறது. உலகக் கோப்பை அணியில் இடம் பெற்ற கிரிக்கெட் வீரர்களில் தமிழக வீரர் ஸ்ரீகாந்த்திற்கு இப்படத்தில் கூடுதல் முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள். ஸ்ரீகாந்த் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் தமிழ் நடிகர் ஜீவா பொருத்தமாக நடித்திருக்கிறார். அவருக்குப் பிறகு கவாஸ்கர், பல்வீந்தர் சிங் சாந்து ஆகியோர் இடம் பெறுகிறார்கள். மற்ற வீரர்களுக்கு கிரிக்கெட் மைதானங்களில் மட்டுமே முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. யஷ்பால் சர்மா, ரோஜர் பின்னி, மதன்லால், சந்தீப் பாட்டில், மொகிந்தர் அமர்நாத் ஆகியோர் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட காட்சிகள் மைதானங்களில்தான் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது. ஒவ்வொரு வீரருக்காக தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்ட நடிகர்கள் பொருத்தமாக நடித்திருக்கிறார்கள். ஜிம்பாப்வே அணிக்கு எதிராக கபில்தேவ் முதன் முதலில் உலக சாதனை புரிந்த 175 ரன்கள் அடித்தது பிபிசி ஊழியர்கள் ஸ்டிரைக் செய்ததால் ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்யப்படவில்லை. அந்த அற்புத சாதனை நிகழ்வை நேரில் பார்த்தவர்கள் மட்டுமே நினைவு கூற முடியும். அந்த சாதனையைத் திரும்பப் பார்க்க முடியுமா என்ற ஏக்கத்தை இந்தப் படத்தில் நிறைவு செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். கிரிக்கெட் போட்டிகளை படமாக்கிய விதம், குறிப்பாக லைவ்வில் இடம் பெறும் எழுத்துக்கள் உட்பட பல விஷயங்களில் அதிக கவனம் செலுத்தியிருக்கிறார்கள். சிறு வயது சச்சின் டிவி முன்னால் மேட்ச் பார்ப்பது, அப்போது நடந்த முஸ்லிம், இந்து மக்கள் கலவரம் ஆகியவை படத்தில் இடைச்செருகலாய் வலுக்கட்டாயமாக நுழைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. இங்கிலாந்தில் நடைபெற்ற கிரிக்கெட் போட்டிகள், அதற்கு பின்னால் நடந்த சில சுவாரசிய நிகழ்வுகள் ஆகியவற்றுடன் மட்டும் படத்திற்கான திரைக்கதையை அமைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். வேறு எந்த சம்பவங்களுக்கும் முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கவில்லை. கபில்தேவ் தலைமையில், 1983 உலகக் கோப்பை நிகழ்வுகளை '83' என்ற படமாகப் பார்த்த திருப்தியில், இரண்டாவது முறையாக கோப்பையை வென்ற '2011' ம் ஆண்டு நிகழ்வுகளை '11' என திரைப்படமாக்க மாட்டார்களா என்ற ஏக்கத்தை இந்தப் படம் ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. 83 - மறக்க முடியாத சாதனை

Ranveer singh's 83 movie review - film directed by kabir khan.

83 Movie Cast & Crew

Ranveer Singh's long awaited and highly anticipated sports drama, 83 has been watched. The film, which is based on the real life incidents of the journey of the Indian Cricket Team in the 1983 World Cup, is directed by Kabir Khan. Jiiva, Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, and several others play supporting roles in this film.    STORY:  As already known, 83 is a story about the real-life Indian Cricket Team that had to undergo a highly challenging journey to emerge as the Champions of the 1983 World Cup. When everyone wrote off the team and considered them to be the weak link, under Kapil Dev's (Ranveer Singh) leadership, the Indian Team defeated every single odds that came their way to become the World Cup Winners. The film showcases this exciting journey of the team in a gripping fashion.  

SCREENPLAY, DIALOGUES & DIRECTION:  83 begins steadily and the first half moves at a good pace with enough scenes to hold your attention. The second half is highly charged with emotional and heart touching scenes that take you back to 1983 times. Despite us knowing the historical incident and what the final result is going to be, the film makes us cheer for its characters and the team and that is where 83 triumphs. 83 is a euphoria that needs to be experienced only on the big screen and director Kabir Khan packs the film with a punch. 83 is also one of those rarest films where predictability doesn't come into play since emotions weigh heavier than predictability.

The scenes make you emotional, happy, cheerful, proud, and whatnot! Director Kabir Khan's conviction with which he has shot and packaged the film needs to be applauded. His team has done their level best to recreate the magical moments of the 83 World Cup. The emotional dots are neatly connected which makes us stay close to the characters in the film. The film is exceptional in all aspects, especially the screenplay and direction that stand out. The screenplay has got a great momentum where you have a high point in regular intervals. The scene that showcases Kapil Dev's world record earns the applause instantly and the film has several more such scenes. Kabir never allows the film to face a dip, in terms of pace and engagement.

83 is nothing short of a visual treat, especially for the cricket lovers. Pointing out a negative in this film would be a tough choice in this film. 83 is also a film that respects the game of cricket with dignity and if you are a fan of the game, you cannot miss this one! 

CAST:  It is not an easy task to portray a legendary personality in a film, but, Ranveer Singh has taken up that challenge and has lived the role of Kapil Dev. Ranveer goes all guns blazing with his performance that is both emotional and intense. There's a certain level of subtlety that Kapil Dev possessed and Ranveer manages to bring that on screen. Ranveer is definitely the show stealer of 83 and he has surely delivered one of his career best performances.

Jiiva is the next person after Ranveer Singh who gets more prominence and the talented actor delivers a delightful performance. As Cheeka (Krishnamachari Srikkanth), Jiiva aces the role with perfection and helps in comic reliefs at regular intervals. His enjoyable performance is sure to strike a connection with the audience. Pankaj Tripathi as PR Man Singh acts as a solid support system, delivering what is expected of him. Deepika Padukone in a short and sweet role is impressive. Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarma, Chirag Patil and others play their respective parts effectively. The casting has been top-notch in terms of the selection of the actors to play the cricketers and due credits to Mukesh Chhabra and the team for the same.

TECHNICAL:  Pritam's songs are quite good and passable, while Julius Packiam's background score adds to the adrenaline rush and excitement of the audience. Aseem Mishra's cinematography is splendid as he has indeed recreated the highlight moments of the 1983 World Cup with believability. Additional brownie points to the makeup department without whom the film wouldn't have looked this real. The makeover for each actor to look like the real-life cricketer is remarkable. 

SO?  With incredible performances and fantastic packaging, 83 is a blockbuster winner! 

Verdict 83 is a euphoria that makes you emotional, happy, ecstatic, and proud! A Glorious Win!

83 Movie Review: 1983-ம் ஆண்டு கபில் தேவ் தலைமையிலான இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் அணி உலகக்கோப்பை வென்றதை வைத்து 83 படம் தயாராகி உள்ளது. மிகுந்த எதிர்ப்பார்ப்புக்கு இடையில், பெரிய திரையில் வெளியிட வேண்டுமென காத்திருந்து டிசம்பர் 24-ம் தேதி தியேட்டரில் வெளியாக உள்ளது 83. இப்படத்தின் ஸ்பெஷல் ஷோவை நேற்று மாலை பார்த்தோம். ரீல் கபில் தேவின் 83 எப்படி இருக்கிறது?  

உத்வேகம், ஆச்சர்யம், எதிர்ப்பார்ப்பு, வெற்றி, தோல்வி, கொண்டாட்டம், ஏமாற்றம் என அனைத்து எமோஷன்களை உள்ளடக்கிய ஒரு சினிமா கதைக்கான அனைத்து அம்சங்களையும் கொண்டதுதான் இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் அணியின் 1983 உலகக்கோப்பை பயணம். வரலாற்றில் அதிகம் கொண்டாடப்பட்ட, மக்களுக்கு பரிச்சயமான ஒரு கதையை மீண்டும் சினிமாவாக காட்சிப்படுத்தும்போது பெரும்பாலான இடங்களில் ‘சிக்சர்’ அடித்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர் கபீர் கான். தமிழில் டப்பிங் செய்யப்பட்ட காட்சியைதான் பார்த்தோம் என்றாலும், டப்பிங் படம் போன்ற ஃபீலிங்கை தராமல் இருந்தது படத்தின் ப்ளஸ். 

கபில் தேவ், கவாஸ்கர், ஸ்ரீகாந்த், மட்டுமல்லாது தமிழ் ரசிகர்களுக்கு மிகவும் தெரிந்திடாத கிரிக்கெட் வீரர்களையும் மனதில் பதிய வைக்கும்படி படம் எடுக்கப்பட்டதற்கு நடிகர்களின் பங்கு மிக முக்கிய காரணம். ரன்வீர் சிங், தீபிகா படுகோன், போமன் இராணி, ஜீவா, தஹிர் ராஜ் பாசின், அம்மி விர்க், பங்கஜ் த்ரிபாதி என படத்தில் நடித்திருக்கும் ஒவ்வொருவரும் நிறைவான நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தி இருக்கின்றனர். குறிப்பாக, சீக்காவாக நடித்திருக்கும் ஜீவா அப்ளாஸ் வாங்குகிறார். ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட காட்சியில், காமெடி, அழுகை என எமோஷன்கள் மாறி மாறி வந்தாலும் கச்சிதமாக நடித்திருக்கிறார்.  

திரைப்பட காட்சிகளும், 1983-ம் ஆண்டு உலகக்கோப்பை தொடரின் நிஜ காட்சிகளும் அடுத்தடுத்து வரும்போது பார்ப்பதற்கு செயற்கையாக இல்லாமல், கனெக்ட் செய்யும் வகையில் இருப்பதற்கு காரணம் சிறப்பான எடிட்டிங். படத்தின் பின்னணி இசையமைத்த ஜூலியஸ் பாக்கியமும், பாடல்களுக்கு இசையமைத்த ப்ரீத்தமும், ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் அசீம் மிஷ்ராவும் நல்ல அவுட்புட்டிற்காக மெனக்கெட்டிருப்பது நன்றாகவே தெரிகிறது. 

கபில் தேவ் என்ற ஒன் மேன் ஆர்மியின் அசராத நம்பிக்கைக்கும், முயற்சிக்கும் கிடைத்த வெற்றிக்கதையாக ஆரம்பத்தில் தெரிந்தாலும், ஒட்டுமொத்த இந்தியாவின் நம்பிக்கை கதையாக, வெற்றியாக மாறும் தருணங்கள் கண்டிப்பாக ‘புல்லரிக்க’ வைக்கும்! கிரிக்கெட் என்ற விளையாட்டு இந்தியாவில் ஏன் கொண்டாப்படுகிறது, மக்களின் இரத்தத்தில் எப்படி கலந்துபோனது என்பதற்கு காரணமான முக்கிய நிகழ்வை கிட்டத்தட்ட நிறைவாக காட்சிப்படுத்தி இருக்கின்றது படக்குழு.  

எமோஷன்களை தூக்கிவிட்டு, விளையாட்டை குறைத்து கொண்டு வெளியாகும் வழக்கமான ஸ்போர்ட்ஸ் டிராமாவில் இருக்கும் மைனஸ்களை தவிர்த்து, விளையாட்டை விளையாட்டாகவே காட்சிப்படுத்தி, எதார்த்தமான எமோஷன்களை மட்டும் காட்டி இரண்டரை மணி நேரத்தை ‘வொர்த்’ என சொல்ல வைக்கிறது 83! கபில் தேவின் 175*, ஸ்ரீகாந்த்தின் ஹோட்டல் பேச்சு, பேருந்து சீன், ஃபைனல் வின்னிங் மொமண்ட் என சில சூப்பர் காட்சிகளுக்காகவும், சில சர்ப்ரைஸ் மொமெண்ட்ஸ்களுக்காகவும் 83 திரைப்படத்தை தியேட்டரில் பார்க்கலாம்.

83 movie review: Ranveer Singh and his Devils take you time-travelling in this excellent, emotional film

83 movie review: if you needed a reason to walk into a theatre, kabir khan's 83 is that film which calls for a big screen experience..

I remember when the 1983 World Cup legends visited The Kapil Sharma show amid heavy buzz. Over two years later, Kabir Khan recreates somewhat similar magic on screen with his film 83 that celebrates India’s first-ever World Cup win in England. It transports you to that era, allowing you to be a part of that victorious moment. In all honesty, I very much felt like I was sitting in that stadium, cheering for Team India each time they hit a boundary and tearing up on the loss of every wicket. On top of it, I couldn’t see any actors on the screen during the 160 minutes runtime of 83 — it all looked so real.

Ranveer Singh takes the arduous task of stepping into the shoes of Kapil Dev and aces it, especially with the Natraj pose. He gets into the skin of the then captain with so much conviction and excitement that in some scenes, you actually search for the actor Ranveer but don't complain when you see Kapil Dev hitting it out of the park. Full marks for the physical resemblance, body language and mannerisms, however, in some portions, I felt he goes a bit overboard with the heavy accent and dialogue delivery. But his hold of the Punjabi and broken English is quite how you would imagine Kapil Dev speaking back then.

Ranveer doesn't do it all alone, he pulls it off with support from his team. Each of them, so convincingly, looked the part they portrayed on screen. Ranveer's camaraderie with all his teammates, especially with Saqib Saleem playing Mohinder Jimmy Amarnath, is endearing and unmissable. Tahir Raj Bhasin as Sunil Gavaskar , Jatin Sarna as Yashpal Sharma , Tamil actor Jiiva as Srikkanth, Ammy Virk as Balwinder Sandhu and Harrdy Sandhu as Madan Lal hold on to their characters and shine in each frame. The prep that all the 11 players on screen have undergone, shows in their techniques and game on the field. Not to forget Pankaj Tripathi as PR Man Singh, the team's manager, who not only adds the humour but also lends a strong support to the team.

Although the disclaimer in the beginning of the film clearly states that some characters have been fictionalised and dramatised just for the story, I am curious to know exactly which parts were true, and which ones were taken creative liberties. Nonetheless, 83 beautifully encapsulates Team India's journey, struggle, defeats, inner conflicts, personal losses and most importantly, their passion to win — not for themselves but for the country. Kabir Khan's film is less about the story and more about its characters and how they, despite once laughing at their captain's words - 'We will win the World Cup' – end up putting their best foot forward to make that a reality.

Making a film based on such a historic milestone was quite a risky proposition for director Kabir Khan because you can't afford to go wrong with facts here. But the minute details and nuances in the story that he highlights in the film makes you believe in his research and dedication towards the project. Yes, the film is about India's win but Kabir doesn't hesitate to tell us how most Indians never believed that India could win the World Cup. The mockery and sarcasm hits you hard through some scenes. I particularly loved the references to how a game of cricket can take precedence over communal violence and bring people from all strata of society under one roof. The scene where a woman delivers her baby right when Team India is playing their final match, and how the family names him 'Kapil' as soon as the country wins, is heartwarming. Another scene in which a younger Sachin Tendulkar screams, “Main bhi India ke liye cricket khelunga (I will also play for India)” fills one with pride to know how this historic win impacted people's lives. Even while showing the personal stories of the players, Kabir has effortlessly blended it in the screenplay and it doesn’t seem like a forced attempt.

The film also stars Deepika Padukone as Kapil Dev's wife Romi Dev but she has very little to do apart from sitting on the stands, smiling or crying depending on the team's game.

The music of the film deserves a special mention. For once, you don't have song and dance sequences that seem forced, as both the tracks--Lehra Do and Bigadne Do--play as background music, aptly fitting the situation, evoking emotions.

At several places, 83 gets high on nationalism, which could have been easily avoided. But that's something one kind of overlooks for the pride and joy you experience on seeing the team lift that trophy. If you needed a reason to walk into a theatre, 83 is that film which calls for a big screen experience.

83 - Review A riveting sports-drama from Kabir and Ranveer in the form of '83

The much awaited ‘83’ film directed by Kabir Khan, starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and a school of other important actors has finally hit screens. The movie obviously talks about the journey of the Indian Cricket team that went on to win the 1983 World Cup in England. How has this sports-drama fared among its fans?

Coming across as one of the most hyped films of this year, 83 the film, as much as it has its mass appeal, also has the pressure of being extremely good. Here, Kabir Khan keeps his cool and sticks to the basics. The film barely digresses from the core (The World Cup) and here, half the battle is won.

What’s most appreciable is the casting. Be it Ranveer as Kapil Dev, Jiiva as Krish Shrikanth, Harry Sandhu as Madan Lal, Saqib Saleem as Amarnath and all the other cricketers are so aptly cast and do a fabulous job. Special mention to the underrated Jiiva who deserved a break after so long! He has literally lived as Cheeka and comes across as a terrific performer for one and all with his body language and top-notch dialogue slang! What remains most authentic is the casting of the menacing West Indies team players. The actors that play Marshall, Viv Richards are all outstandingly cast and well supported by roles played by Boman Irani and Deepika Padukone. Full marks here.

Some of the sequences demand the creation of the time and space of the 1980’s in England. This has been worked upon really well by team Kabir. The cricket portions are breathtaking in most instances and the matches look so real. Some of the dialogues have been added for the sake of humour between the games and these could come across as cinematic for a few.

The scenes that require special mention are the ones that involve Kapil against the press reporters of London, Jiiva’s toast to his ‘mad captain’, the Marshall face off and obviously the Australia and West Indies cricket matches. However, the icing on the cake remains in the set up within India. We are shown parallel subplots of soldiers in the Indian border and a religious riot in a small town called Nawabpur. The makers have brought these in as a breather for those who may find it to be too much of cricket and it has actually worked in their favour.

The slang of the cricketers, their body language, game, the pace of the film and the build ups to the matches are all well sketched. However, what could have been avoided is the glorification of the Indian team in certain scenes and a few commercial elements that have been kept for entertainment purposes. For instance, you have a joke about an ‘STD’ at a very crucial game and one might wonder if they could have done away with stuff like that and stuck to the intensity.

Technically, 83 stands tall! Kudos to the cinematographer Aseem Mishra for pulling off this output. Music by Pritam and Julius add much needed spice to the film and the BGM’s work well with the slow motion shots. However, the medal goes to the edit by Nitin Baid as it is no easy task to edit a sports drama and he has played it to excellence.

Overall, 83 the film is surely an impactful watch with the right dose of emotions and cricket. By portraying the beautiful journey of the Indian Cricket team that won the 1983 World Cup, most cricket fans are in for a treat. Even those who love positive films and expect a feel good entertainer can enjoy 83. Ranveer Singh has to be commended for his magnanimous nature of letting numerous actors take the fore, as he demands respect for choosing this sort of a multi-starrer backed by an amazing intention!

The emotional journey of Indian Cricket that deserves a watch from fans!

83 movie review: Ranveer Singh plays the captain’s knock in this blood rush of a movie

83 movie review: ranveer singh disappears into his kapil dev even as each of kapil’s devils is given their own moment in this faithful recreation of india's 1983 world cup win..

Some days are unforgettable. 25th June 1983 was not just the day when India won the world cup final for the very first time at Lords: that victory was the turning point of how we saw ourselves as a cricketing nation, and how that incredible win fed into the veins of a country that till then had seen itself as also-rans on and off the cricket field. The next morning, banner headlines screamed ‘The Cup Is Ours’, and nothing was ever the same. It was a blood rush to beat all blood rushes.

Kabir Khan’s ‘83 recreates that day with fidelity, and, yes, let it be said, in full Bollywood style, suffused with song, dance, drama, colour. It pads the film with a few (fictional?) elements meant strictly to play to the gallery, and it skates dangerously close to pandering to the overbearing nationalistic sentiments playing out in today’s India. How else are you meant to feel when the face of a player is limned against the national flag, and the scene is held just that tad bit longer just so you don’t miss the connection? Why would you choose to focus, repeatedly, on an old toothless Muslim man gleaming with glee, or a little boy waving the Indian flag, or the bunch of Indian soldiers on the border gathered breathlessly around the radio? Yes, cricket-mad Indians could well stop rioting, troops could defuse a communal situation, and we could all ‘unite’ over a match, but some of those scenes have a tinny Doordarshan-like feel to them. The Kabir Khan of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ may have toned down the populist touches, but this is a different India, and the playing fields are different.

But, I have to say this too, that we don’t let it ruin the moment. And the movie. We take note of it, acknowledge that the film could have done with some pruning (its runtime at 2.5 hours does feel stretched in bits), and go right back to cheering. Because, man, that was a win, and sweeter because no one, which included most of the Indian team, the team’s manager P R Mansingh (Pankaj Tripathi), the sneering English officials, crickets followers back home, believed for a moment that something as momentous as this was even possible.

Except for one man. India captain Kapil Dev ( Ranveer Singh ), who never takes his eyes off the target. What else are we here for, he says at a press conference? The light in his eyes and the confidence in his voice makes us believe. He is the man on the spot, managing overweening egos, chivvying his players, and keeping up the team spirit. One of the things that the film does well is to hint at the problems Kapil had through that English summer with Sunil Gavaskar (Tahir Raj Bhasin), who is shown both sulking and skulking at not being given his due: how could this upstart, the rough-and-rude Haryanvi lad who didn’t play nice and gentlemanly and all things cricket, be made India captain?

But cometh the hour, cometh the man. This line, as any cricket-loving, commentary-devouring fan would cringe at, was never as true as when Kapil and his Devils tore through the mighty West Indies in that historic final, fending off the Australian and the Poms, helped with the historic 175 runs Kapil Dev made against Zimbabwe. It was truly a captain’s knock, sadly undocumented because the BBC was on strike that day.

The horsing in the locker room and the easy banter is recreated well. A scene where K Srikanth aka Cheeka (Jiiva) drags along Kapil and another teammate to devour dosai at a doe-eyed South Indian girl’s home, is played strictly for laughs. But it does give us a glimpse into the lives of the players: who were these guys when they were not playing for guts and glory on the field? Facing hostile bowling in those days without the armour that cricketers these days take for granted took immense courage: those killing bouncers from Andy Roberts and Michael Holding (the actors playing the West Indians are properly smug) which took skin and bone and drew blood were the stuff nightmares are made of.

Each player, some of them looking remarkably like their real-life counterpart, is given a moment. Jiiva nearly steals the film with a brilliant monologue, where he stares down a snooty British journalist (I’d happily see the film again, just for this). Ammy Virk as Balwinder Sandhu, Saqib Saleem as Mohinder Amarnath (one of the running gags in this film is the ‘real’ Amarnath playing his father, ‘Lalaji’), Jatin Sarna as Yashpal Sharma, one of the chief architects of the win, Boman Irani as Farrokh Engineer, first stoic then excitable in the commentary box, and the irrepressible Pankaj Tripathi all stand out. The presence of Deepika Padukone, playing Kapil’s wife Romi, on the other hand, could have been better used; she literally brings up the rear. Maybe that’s what cricketing wives, also known as widows, do, but when even the main scene between them is turned into a chance for Kapil to give one of his we-can-do-it speeches, you wish we could have been witness to something tender between them. And Neena Gupta as Kapil’s supportive mother comes off near-stock, there just so he can recall her ‘jeet kar aana’ line.

But it doesn’t matter. The one who takes us past all these niggles is Ranveer Singh, disappearing into his Kapil Dev. ‘Aukaat se zyada khelna padega’, he says, sounding remarkably like Kapil, and goes out and does it. The slightly protruding teeth, the discomfort with English (those self-deprecatory digs at himself are smile-inducing), the deliberate delivery, the never-say-die spirit, is all spot on. (We see the real-life Kapil cheerleading from the stands, and the house comes down). Batting, bowling, being ‘cap’, staying on top: his playing ka koi jawaab nahin.

83 Movie Review: Ranveer Singh Finishes Off In Style, Kapil Dev Lifts The World Cup Turning Cinema Halls Into Stadiums!

83 only crystal clears one thing, whatever ranveer is off-screen, he could be anything on-screen..

What’s Good:  This not only allows someone like Ranveer Singh to push his envelope of method acting but also helps actors like Ammy Virk, Jiiva, Jatin Sarna to exhibit different shades of their hidden skills

What’s Bad: Just like every ‘inspired by true events’ film, this one, too, takes certain cinematic liberties out of which some work in favour and some go against

Loo Break: It’s a long film, so bless your bladder and take the interval as a break

Watch or Not?:  The only picture I wanted the makers to hold for a theatrical release was this (& Brahmastra), as expected filled with many very moments which only and only demand a theatrical release

As conveyed before, more than being a biopic of Kapil Dev (Ranveer Singh) this film is about the ever-so-known historic feat of India’s first World Cup win that happened back in 1983. We see a team of underdogs in the Indian Cricket Team leaving for yet another world cup which most know is just a formality to continue the tradition of the English sport. The sentiment of ‘they’re not going to win’ is so strong that they have a return ticket booked beforehand of a date occurring even before the semi-finals.

In a surprising twist, the team of 11 dark horses go on to win the first two matches topping the leaderboard of their group. This incident didn’t just give birth to the hopes gir Indian cricket fans but also players like Sachin Tendulkar who went on to rewrite the history in the 2011 World Cup for the country. The rest of the film is about India’s roaring journey to the historic moment of Kapil Dev lifting the world cup.

83 Movie Review: Script Analysis

The story many know but it’s 83’s execution that shines to match the monumental emotions we as a country hold for the game. Kabir Khan along with Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, Vasan Bala pens a story that milks every possible emotion from the details available about the event that’s etched into people’s memory.

Khan ropes in his trusted cinematographer Aseem Mishra (who has shot Khan’s every movie apart from Kabul Express) but this one is especially tough for him. It’s not at all easy to capture the pace of a 50-over game’s thrill in just a handful of minutes as that’s how long a match sequence would last. West Indies’ aggressive bowling is showcased brilliantly using some very neat slo-mo camera shots. As it should be, Khan chooses to showcase the best highlights of all the matches leading to a much-detailed euphoric finale.

Is it emotionally manipulative? Of course, it’s. Did I mind? Partially, yes but not when you experience the whole package. There still are scenes mentioning riots and sequences of the army asking the score from Muslim locals. Editor Nitin Baid manages to keep the film just about 2 hours 40 minutes and that’s just about okay for a whole lot of content we get to consume. Yes, there are multiple unwanted sequences added to bring in the comic relief but they add just to the total screentime.

83 Movie Review: Star Performance

Kapil Dev is not at all an easy character to get into the skin of given his extremely restricted personality and is the polar opposite to the virtues Ranveer Singh stands for. But, this makes clear one more thing, whatever Ranveer is off-screen, he could be anything on-screen. This only adds to the list of characters Ranveer Singh has nailed (read: shot) out of the stadium.

The entire Deepika Padukone as Kapil’s wife angle is noticeably to milk the brownie points from the fandom of both stars and it doesn’t serve any special purpose. Pankaj Tripathi continues the thing he does with every project he related to: make it better. The quirks given to PR Man Singh sits extremely well with Pankaj as he makes another addition to the list of mastered accents.

From the rest of the team, Ammy Virk (Balwinder Sandhu), Jiiva (Krishnamachari Srikkanth) & Jatin Sarna (Yashpal Sharma) stand out. Ammy’s innocence aides him in building the natural aura of Sandhu. Jiiva’s controlled impersonification of Cheeka allows him to stay well within lines not going caricaturish. He delivers a monologue with much ease keeping an impeccable hold of his flowing expressions.

83 Movie Review: Direction, Music

Kabir Khan takes a more predictable, conventional route in “what to show apart from what’s already known.” He doesn’t get into the backstory of Kapil Dev just because he had the chance and very smartly chooses to keep the scenes that would turn the audi into a stadium. Another smart thing he brings in is the way he chooses to mash up the real footage with the reel. From showing the real-life photos of the cricketers on the passport of the actors, to letting the audience in the film watch the visuals of the original match on their tv sets, this has bested of what we’ve seen in such films till now.

Pritam’s background score adds the required oomph to the already high-on-adrenaline visuals. Lehra Do & Jeetega Bhai Jeetega aptly do their job of boosting the drama of the team’s unpredictable journey. But none of the songs would be remembered as standalone songs as they’re designed to be extremely situational.

83 Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Ranveer Singh & Kabir Khan have done it! They’ve taken us back to a time in which history was written, helping us to feel even a fraction of what every cricket lover must’ve felt on the evening of 25th June 1983.

Four stars!
