Research Randomizer is a free resource for researchers and students in need of a quick way to generate random numbers or assign participants to experimental conditions. This site can be used for a variety of purposes, including psychology experiments, medical trials, and survey research.

GENERATE NUMBERS

In some cases, you may wish to generate more than one set of numbers at a time (e.g., when randomly assigning people to experimental conditions in a "blocked" research design). If you wish to generate multiple sets of random numbers, simply enter the number of sets you want, and Research Randomizer will display all sets in the results.

Specify how many numbers you want Research Randomizer to generate in each set. For example, a request for 5 numbers might yield the following set of random numbers: 2, 17, 23, 42, 50.

Specify the lowest and highest value of the numbers you want to generate. For example, a range of 1 up to 50 would only generate random numbers between 1 and 50 (e.g., 2, 17, 23, 42, 50). Enter the lowest number you want in the "From" field and the highest number you want in the "To" field.

Selecting "Yes" means that any particular number will appear only once in a given set (e.g., 2, 17, 23, 42, 50). Selecting "No" means that numbers may repeat within a given set (e.g., 2, 17, 17, 42, 50). Please note: Numbers will remain unique only within a single set, not across multiple sets. If you request multiple sets, any particular number in Set 1 may still show up again in Set 2.

Place Markers let you know where in the sequence a particular random number falls (by marking it with a small number immediately to the left). Examples: With Place Markers Off, your results will look something like this: Set #1: 2, 17, 23, 42, 50 Set #2: 5, 3, 42, 18, 20 This is the default layout Research Randomizer uses. With Place Markers Within, your results will look something like this: Set #1: p1=2, p2=17, p3=23, p4=42, p5=50 Set #2: p1=5, p2=3, p3=42, p4=18, p5=20 This layout allows you to know instantly that the number 23 is the third number in Set #1, whereas the number 18 is the fourth number in Set #2. Notice that with this option, the Place Markers begin again at p1 in each set. With Place Markers Across, your results will look something like this: Set #1: p1=2, p2=17, p3=23, p4=42, p5=50 Set #2: p6=5, p7=3, p8=42, p9=18, p10=20 This layout allows you to know that 23 is the third number in the sequence, and 18 is the ninth number over both sets. Random assignment uses chance to assign subjects to the control and treatment groups in an experiment. This process helps ensure that the groups are equivalent at the beginning of the study, which makes it safer to assume the treatments caused any differences between groups that the experimenters observe at the end of the study.

Huh? That might be a big surprise! At this point, you might be wondering about all of those studies that use statistics to assess the effects of different treatments. There’s a critical separation between significance and causality:

  • Statistical procedures determine whether an effect is significant.
  • Experimental designs determine how confidently you can assume that a treatment causes the effect.

In this post, learn how using random assignment in experiments can help you identify causal relationships.

Correlation, Causation, and Confounding Variables

Random assignment helps you separate causation from correlation and rule out confounding variables. As a critical component of the scientific method , experiments typically set up contrasts between a control group and one or more treatment groups. The idea is to determine whether the effect, which is the difference between a treatment group and the control group, is statistically significant. If the effect is significant, group assignment correlates with different outcomes.

However, as you have no doubt heard, correlation does not necessarily imply causation. In other words, the experimental groups can have different mean outcomes, but the treatment might not be causing those differences even though the differences are statistically significant.

The difficulty in definitively stating that a treatment caused the difference is due to potential confounding variables or confounders. Confounders are alternative explanations for differences between the experimental groups. Confounding variables correlate with both the experimental groups and the outcome variable. In this situation, confounding variables can be the actual cause for the outcome differences rather than the treatments themselves. As you’ll see, if an experiment does not account for confounding variables, they can bias the results and make them untrustworthy.

Example of Confounding in an Experiment

  • Control group: Does not consume vitamin supplements
  • Treatment group: Regularly consumes vitamin supplements.

Imagine we measure a specific health outcome. After the experiment is complete, we perform a 2-sample t-test to determine whether the mean outcomes for these two groups are different. Assume the test results indicate that the mean health outcome in the treatment group is significantly better than the control group.

Why can’t we assume that the vitamins improved the health outcomes? After all, only the treatment group took the vitamins.

Alternative Explanations for Differences in Outcomes

The answer to that question depends on how we assigned the subjects to the experimental groups. If we let the subjects decide which group to join based on their existing vitamin habits, it opens the door to confounding variables. It’s reasonable to assume that people who take vitamins regularly also tend to have other healthy habits. These habits are confounders because they correlate with both vitamin consumption (experimental group) and the health outcome measure.

Random assignment prevents this self sorting of participants and reduces the likelihood that the groups start with systematic differences.

In fact, studies have found that supplement users are more physically active, have healthier diets, have lower blood pressure, and so on compared to those who don’t take supplements. If subjects who already take vitamins regularly join the treatment group voluntarily, they bring these healthy habits disproportionately to the treatment group. Consequently, these habits will be much more prevalent in the treatment group than the control group.

The healthy habits are the confounding variables—the potential alternative explanations for the difference in our study’s health outcome. It’s entirely possible that these systematic differences between groups at the start of the study might cause the difference in the health outcome at the end of the study—and not the vitamin consumption itself!

If our experiment doesn’t account for these confounding variables, we can’t trust the results. While we obtained statistically significant results with the 2-sample t-test for health outcomes, we don’t know for sure whether the vitamins, the systematic difference in habits, or some combination of the two caused the improvements.

Experiments Must Account for Confounding Variables

Your experimental design must account for confounding variables to avoid their problems. Scientific studies commonly use the following methods to handle confounders:

  • Use control variables to keep them constant throughout an experiment.
  • Statistically control for them in an observational study.
  • Use random assignment to reduce the likelihood that systematic differences exist between experimental groups when the study begins.

Let’s take a look at how random assignment works in an experimental design.

Random Assignment Can Reduce the Impact of Confounding Variables

Note that random assignment is different than random sampling. Random sampling is a process for obtaining a sample that accurately represents a population .

Random assignment uses a chance process to assign subjects to experimental groups. Using random assignment requires that the experimenters can control the group assignment for all study subjects. For our study, we must be able to assign our participants to either the control group or the supplement group. Clearly, if we don’t have the ability to assign subjects to the groups, we can’t use random assignment!

Additionally, the process must have an equal probability of assigning a subject to any of the groups. For example, in our vitamin supplement study, we can use a coin toss to assign each subject to either the control group or supplement group. For more complex experimental designs, we can use a random number generator or even draw names out of a hat.

Random Assignment Distributes Confounders Equally

The random assignment process distributes confounding properties amongst your experimental groups equally. In other words, randomness helps eliminate systematic differences between groups. For our study, flipping the coin tends to equalize the distribution of subjects with healthier habits between the control and treatment group. Consequently, these two groups should start roughly equal for all confounding variables, including healthy habits!

Random assignment is a simple, elegant solution to a complex problem. For any given study area, there can be a long list of confounding variables that you could worry about. However, using random assignment, you don’t need to know what they are, how to detect them, or even measure them. Instead, use random assignment to equalize them across your experimental groups so they’re not a problem.

Because random assignment helps ensure that the groups are comparable when the experiment begins, you can be more confident that the treatments caused the post-study differences. Random assignment helps increase the internal validity of your study.

Comparing the Vitamin Study With and Without Random Assignment

Let’s compare two scenarios involving our hypothetical vitamin study. We’ll assume that the study obtains statistically significant results in both cases.

Scenario 1: We don’t use random assignment and, unbeknownst to us, subjects with healthier habits disproportionately end up in the supplement treatment group. The experimental groups differ by both healthy habits and vitamin consumption. Consequently, we can’t determine whether it was the habits or vitamins that improved the outcomes.

Scenario 2: We use random assignment and, consequently, the treatment and control groups start with roughly equal levels of healthy habits. The intentional introduction of vitamin supplements in the treatment group is the primary difference between the groups. Consequently, we can more confidently assert that the supplements caused an improvement in health outcomes.

For both scenarios, the statistical results could be identical. However, the methodology behind the second scenario makes a stronger case for a causal relationship between vitamin supplement consumption and health outcomes.

How important is it to use the correct methodology? Well, if the relationship between vitamins and health outcomes is not causal, then consuming vitamins won’t cause your health outcomes to improve regardless of what the study indicates. Instead, it’s probably all the other healthy habits!

Drawbacks of Random Assignment

Random assignment helps reduce the chances of systematic differences between the groups at the start of an experiment and, thereby, mitigates the threats of confounding variables and alternative explanations. However, the process does not always equalize all of the confounding variables. Its random nature tends to eliminate systematic differences, but it doesn’t always succeed.

Sometimes random assignment is impossible because the experimenters cannot control the treatment or independent variable. For example, if you want to determine how individuals with and without depression perform on a test, you cannot randomly assign subjects to these groups. The same difficulty occurs when you’re studying differences between genders.

In other cases, there might be ethical issues. For example, in a randomized experiment, the researchers would want to withhold treatment for the control group. However, if the treatments are vaccinations, it might be unethical to withhold the vaccinations.

Other times, random assignment might be possible, but it is very challenging. For example, with vitamin consumption, it’s generally thought that if vitamin supplements cause health improvements, it’s only after very long-term use. It’s hard to enforce random assignment with a strict regimen for usage in one group and non-usage in the other group over the long-run. Or imagine a study about smoking. The researchers would find it difficult to assign subjects to the smoking and non-smoking groups randomly!

Fortunately, if you can’t use random assignment to help reduce the problem of confounding variables, there are different methods available. The other primary approach is to perform an observational study and incorporate the confounders into the statistical model itself. Hi Jim, I have a question of randomly assigning participants to one of two conditions when it is an ongoing study and you are not sure of how many participants there will be. I am using this random assignment tool for factorial experiments. http://methodologymedia.psu.edu/most/rannumgenerator It asks you for the total number of participants but at this point, I am not sure how many there will be. Thanks for any advice you can give me, Floyd

Jim, can you comment on the validity of using the following approach when we can’t use random assignments. I’m in education, we have an ACT prep course that we offer. We can’t force students to take it and we can’t keep them from taking it either. But we want to know if it’s working. Let’s say that by senior year all students who are going to take the ACT have taken it. Let’s also say that I’m only including students who have taking it twice (so I can show growth between first and second time taking it). What I’ve done to address confounders is to go back to say 8th or 9th grade (prior to anyone taking the ACT or the ACT prep course) and run an analysis showing the two groups are not significantly different to start with. Is this valid? If the ACT prep students were higher achievers in 8th or 9th grade, I could not assume my prep course is effecting greater growth, but if they were not significantly different in 8th or 9th grade, I can assume the significant difference in ACT growth (from first to second testing) is due to the prep course. Yes or no?

I think randomness in an experiment is a funny thing. The issue of confounding factors is a serious problem. You might not even know what they are! But, use random assignment and, voila, the problem usually goes away! If you can’t use random assignment, suddenly you have a whole host of issues to worry about, which I’ll be writing about in more detail in my upcoming post about observational experiments!

A randomized control trial (RCT) is a type of study design that involves randomly assigning participants to either an experimental group or a control group to measure the effectiveness of an intervention or treatment.

Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) are considered the “gold standard” in medical and health research due to their rigorous design.

Randomized Controlled Trial RCT

Control Group

A control group consists of participants who do not receive any treatment or intervention but a placebo or reference treatment. The control participants serve as a comparison group.

The control group is matched as closely as possible to the experimental group, including age, gender, social class, ethnicity, etc.

Because the participants are randomly assigned, the characteristics between the two groups should be balanced, enabling researchers to attribute any differences in outcome to the study intervention.

Since researchers can be confident that any differences between the control and treatment groups are due solely to the effects of the treatments, scientists view RCTs as the gold standard for clinical trials.

Random Allocation

Random allocation and random assignment are terms used interchangeably in the context of a randomized controlled trial (RCT).

Both refer to assigning participants to different groups in a study (such as a treatment group or a control group) in a way that is completely determined by chance.

The process of random assignment controls for confounding variables , ensuring differences between groups are due to chance alone.

Without randomization, researchers might consciously or subconsciously assign patients to a particular group for various reasons.

Several methods can be used for randomization in a Randomized Control Trial (RCT). Here are a few examples:

  • Simple Randomization: This is the simplest method, like flipping a coin. Each participant has an equal chance of being assigned to any group. This can be achieved using random number tables, computerized random number generators, or drawing lots or envelopes.
  • Block Randomization: In this method, participants are randomized within blocks, ensuring that each block has an equal number of participants in each group. This helps to balance the number of participants in each group at any given time during the study.
  • Stratified Randomization: This method is used when researchers want to ensure that certain subgroups of participants are equally represented in each group. Participants are divided into strata, or subgroups, based on characteristics like age or disease severity, and then randomized within these strata.
  • Cluster Randomization: In this method, groups of participants (like families or entire communities), rather than individuals, are randomized.
  • Adaptive Randomization: In this method, the probability of being assigned to each group changes based on the participants already assigned to each group. For example, if more participants have been assigned to the control group, new participants will have a higher probability of being assigned to the experimental group.

Computer software can generate random numbers or sequences that can be used to assign participants to groups in a simple randomization process.

For more complex methods like block, stratified, or adaptive randomization, computer algorithms can be used to consider the additional parameters and ensure that participants are assigned to groups appropriately.

Using a computerized system can also help to maintain the integrity of the randomization process by preventing researchers from knowing in advance which group a participant will be assigned to (a principle known as allocation concealment). This can help to prevent selection bias and ensure the validity of the study results .

Allocation Concealment

Allocation concealment is a technique to ensure the random allocation process is truly random and unbiased.

RCTs use allocation concealment to decide which patients get the real medicine and which get a placebo (a fake medicine)

It involves keeping the sequence of group assignments (i.e., who gets assigned to the treatment group and who gets assigned to the control group next) hidden from the researchers before a participant has enrolled in the study.

This helps to prevent the researchers from consciously or unconsciously selecting certain participants for one group or the other based on their knowledge of which group is next in the sequence.

Allocation concealment ensures that the investigator does not know in advance which treatment the next person will get, thus maintaining the integrity of the randomization process.

Blinding (Masking)

Binding, or masking, refers to withholding information regarding the group assignments (who is in the treatment group and who is in the control group) from the participants, the researchers, or both during the study .

A blinded study prevents the participants from knowing about their treatment to avoid bias in the research. Any information that can influence the subjects is withheld until the completion of the research.

Blinding can be imposed on any participant in an experiment, including researchers, data collectors, evaluators, technicians, and data analysts.

Good blinding can eliminate experimental biases arising from the subjects’ expectations, observer bias, confirmation bias, researcher bias, observer’s effect on the participants, and other biases that may occur in a research test.

In a double-blind study , neither the participants nor the researchers know who is receiving the drug or the placebo. When a participant is enrolled, they are randomly assigned to one of the two groups. The medication they receive looks identical whether it’s the drug or the placebo.

For example, randomized control trials are higher quality and more labor intensive to conduct, so there is a lower quantity published.

Resesearch Designs

The choice of design should be guided by the research question, the nature of the treatments or interventions being studied, practical considerations (like sample size and resources), and ethical considerations (such as ensuring all participants have access to potentially beneficial treatments).

The goal is to select a design that provides the most valid and reliable answers to your research questions while minimizing potential biases and confounds.

1. Between-participants randomized designs

Between-participant design involves randomly assigning participants to different treatment conditions. In its simplest form, it has two groups: an experimental group receiving the treatment and a control group.

With more than two levels, multiple treatment conditions are compared. The key feature is that each participant experiences only one condition.

This design allows for clear comparison between groups without worrying about order effects or carryover effects.

It’s particularly useful for treatments that have lasting impacts or when experiencing one condition might influence how participants respond to subsequent conditions.

A study testing a new antidepressant medication might randomly assign 100 participants to either receive the new drug or a placebo.

The researchers would then compare depression scores between the two groups after a specified treatment period to determine if the new medication is more effective than the placebo.

Use this design when:

  • You want to compare the effects of different treatments or interventions
  • Carryover effects are likely (e.g., learning effects or lasting physiological changes)
  • The treatment effect is expected to be permanent
  • You have a large enough sample size to ensure groups are equivalent through randomization

2. Factorial designs

Factorial designs investigate the effects of two or more independent variables simultaneously. They allow researchers to study both main effects of each variable and interaction effects between variables.

These can be between-participants (different groups for each combination of conditions), within-participants (all participants experience all conditions), or mixed (combining both approaches).

Factorial designs allow researchers to examine how different factors combine to influence outcomes, providing a more comprehensive understanding of complex phenomena.

They’re more efficient than running separate studies for each variable and can reveal important interactions that might be missed in simpler designs.

A study examining the effects of both exercise intensity (high vs. low) and diet type (high-protein vs. high-carb) on weight loss might use a 2×2 factorial design.

Participants would be randomly assigned to one of four groups: high-intensity exercise with high-protein diet, high-intensity exercise with high-carb diet, low-intensity exercise with high-protein diet, or low-intensity exercise with high-carb diet.

  • You want to study the effects of multiple independent variables simultaneously
  • You’re interested in potential interactions between variables
  • You want to increase the efficiency of your study by testing multiple hypotheses at once

3. Cluster randomized designs

In cluster randomized trials, groups or “clusters” of participants are randomized to treatment conditions, rather than individuals.

This is often used when individual randomization is impractical or when the intervention is naturally applied at a group level.

It’s particularly useful in educational or community-based research where individual randomization might be disruptive or lead to treatment diffusion.

A study testing a new teaching method might randomize entire classrooms to either use the new method or continue with the standard curriculum.

The researchers would then compare student outcomes between the classrooms using the different methods, rather than randomizing individual students.

  • You have a smaller sample size available
  • Individual differences are likely to be large
  • The effects of the treatment are temporary
  • You can effectively control for order and carryover effects

4. Within-participants (repeated measures) designs

In these designs, each participant experiences all treatment conditions, serving as their own control.

Within-participants designs are more statistically powerful as they control for individual differences. They require fewer participants, making them more efficient.

However, they’re only appropriate when the treatment effects are temporary and when you can effectively counterbalance to control for order effects.

A study on the effects of caffeine on cognitive performance might have participants complete cognitive tests on three separate occasions: after consuming no caffeine, a low dose of caffeine, and a high dose of caffeine.

The order of these conditions would be counterbalanced across participants to control for order effects.

5. Crossover designs

Crossover designs are a specific type of within-participants design where participants receive different treatments in different time periods.

This allows each participant to serve as their own control and can be more efficient than between-participants designs.

Crossover designs combine the benefits of within-participants designs (increased power, control for individual differences) with the ability to compare different treatments.

They’re particularly useful in clinical trials where you want each participant to experience all treatments, but need to ensure that the effects of one treatment don’t carry over to the next.

A study comparing two different pain medications might have participants use one medication for a month, then switch to the other medication for another month after a washout period.

Pain levels would be measured during both treatment periods, allowing for within-participant comparisons of the two medications’ effectiveness.

  • You want to compare the effects of different treatments within the same individuals
  • The treatments have temporary effects with a known washout period
  • You want to increase statistical power while using a smaller sample size
  • You want to control for individual differences in response to treatment

Prevents bias

In randomized control trials, participants must be randomly assigned to either the intervention group or the control group, such that each individual has an equal chance of being placed in either group.

This is meant to prevent selection bias and allocation bias and achieve control over any confounding variables to provide an accurate comparison of the treatment being studied.

Because the distribution of characteristics of patients that could influence the outcome is randomly assigned between groups, any differences in outcome can be explained only by the treatment.

High statistical power

Because the participants are randomized and the characteristics between the two groups are balanced, researchers can assume that if there are significant differences in the primary outcome between the two groups, the differences are likely to be due to the intervention.

This warrants researchers to be confident that randomized control trials will have high statistical power compared to other types of study designs.

Since the focus of conducting a randomized control trial is eliminating bias, blinded RCTs can help minimize any unconscious information bias.

In a blinded RCT, the participants do not know which group they are assigned to or which intervention is received. This blinding procedure should also apply to researchers, health care professionals, assessors, and investigators when possible.

“Single-blind” refers to an RCT where participants do not know the details of the treatment, but the researchers do.

“ Double-blind ” refers to an RCT where both participants and data collectors are masked of the assigned treatment.

Limitations

Costly and timely.

Some interventions require years or even decades to evaluate, rendering them expensive and time-consuming.

It might take an extended period of time before researchers can identify a drug’s effects or discover significant results.

Requires large sample size

There must be enough participants in each group of a randomized control trial so researchers can detect any true differences or effects in outcomes between the groups.

Researchers cannot detect clinically important results if the sample size is too small.

Change in population over time

Because randomized control trials are longitudinal in nature, it is almost inevitable that some participants will not complete the study, whether due to death, migration, non-compliance, or loss of interest in the study.

This tendency is known as selective attrition and can threaten the statistical power of an experiment.

Randomized control trials are not always practical or ethical, and such limitations can prevent researchers from conducting their studies.

For example, a treatment could be too invasive, or administering a placebo instead of an actual drug during a trial for treating a serious illness could deny a participant’s normal course of treatment. Without ethical approval, a randomized control trial cannot proceed.

Fictitious Example

An example of an RCT would be a clinical trial comparing a drug’s effect or a new treatment on a select population.

The researchers would randomly assign participants to either the experimental group or the control group and compare the differences in outcomes between those who receive the drug or treatment and those who do not.

  • Preventing illicit drug use in adolescents: Long-term follow-up data from a randomized control trial of a school population (Botvin et al., 2000).
  • A prospective randomized control trial comparing medical and surgical treatment for early pregnancy failure (Demetroulis et al., 2001).
  • A randomized control trial to evaluate a paging system for people with traumatic brain injury (Wilson et al., 2009).
  • Prehabilitation versus Rehabilitation: A Randomized Control Trial in Patients Undergoing Colorectal Resection for Cancer (Gillis et al., 2014).

Reporting of a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) should be done in a clear, transparent, and comprehensive manner to allow readers to understand the design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation of the trial.

The Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials ( CONSORT ) statement is a widely accepted guideline for reporting RCTs.

A study design that randomly assigns participants into an experimental group or a control group. As the study is conducted, the only expected difference between the control and experimental groups in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) is the outcome variable being studied.

Fictitious Example

To determine how a new type of short wave UVA-blocking sunscreen affects the general health of skin in comparison to a regular long wave UVA-blocking sunscreen, 40 trial participants were randomly separated into equal groups of 20: an experimental group and a control group. All participants' skin health was then initially evaluated. The experimental group wore the short wave UVA-blocking sunscreen daily, and the control group wore the long wave UVA-blocking sunscreen daily.

After one year, the general health of the skin was measured in both groups and statistically analyzed. In the control group, wearing long wave UVA-blocking sunscreen daily led to improvements in general skin health for 60% of the participants. In the experimental group, wearing short wave UVA-blocking sunscreen daily led to improvements in general skin health for 75% of the participants.

Any of a number of mechanisms used to assign participants into different groups with the expectation that these groups will not differ in any significant way other than treatment and outcome.

Research (alternative) Hypothesis

The relationship between the independent and dependent variables that researchers believe they will prove through conducting a study.

Sensitivity

The relationship between what is considered a symptom of an outcome and the outcome itself; or the percent chance of not getting a false positive (see formulas).

Specificity

The relationship between not having a symptom of an outcome and not having the outcome itself; or the percent chance of not getting a false negative (see formulas).

Type 1 error

Rejecting a null hypothesis when it is in fact true. This is also known as an error of commission.

Type 2 error

The failure to reject a null hypothesis when it is in fact false. This is also known as an error of omission.

Random assignment means that every participant has the same chance of being chosen for the experimental or control group. It involves using procedures that rely on chance to assign participants to groups. Doing this means that every participant in a study has an equal opportunity to be assigned to any group.

For example, in a psychology experiment, participants might be assigned to either a control or experimental group. Some experiments might only have one experimental group, while others may have several treatment variations.

So what type of procedures might psychologists utilize for random assignment? Strategies can include:

How Does Random Assignment Work?

A psychology experiment aims to determine if changes in one variable lead to changes in another variable. Researchers will first begin by coming up with a hypothesis. Once researchers have an idea of what they think they might find in a population, they will come up with an experimental design and then recruit participants for their study.

Once they have a pool of participants representative of the population they are interested in looking at, they will randomly assign the participants to their groups.

  • Control group : Some participants will end up in the control group, which serves as a baseline and does not receive the independent variables.
  • Experimental group : Other participants will end up in the experimental groups that receive some form of the independent variables.

By using random assignment, the researchers make it more likely that the groups are equal at the start of the experiment. Since the groups are the same on other variables, it can be assumed that any changes that occur are the result of varying the independent variables.

After a treatment has been administered, the researchers will then collect data in order to determine if the independent variable had any impact on the dependent variable.

Random Assignment vs. Random Selection

It is important to remember that random assignment is not the same thing as random selection , also known as random sampling.

Random selection instead involves how people are chosen to be in a study. Using random selection, every member of a population stands an equal chance of being chosen for a study or experiment.

So random sampling affects how participants are chosen for a study, while random assignment affects how participants are then assigned to groups.

Examples of Random Assignment

Imagine that a psychology researcher is conducting an experiment to determine if getting adequate sleep the night before an exam results in better test scores.

Forming a Hypothesis

They hypothesize that participants who get 8 hours of sleep will do better on a math exam than participants who only get 4 hours of sleep.

Obtaining Participants

The researcher starts by obtaining a pool of participants. They find 100 participants from a local university. Half of the participants are female, and half are male.

Randomly Assign Participants to Groups

The researcher then assigns random numbers to each participant and uses a random number generator to randomly assign each number to either the 4-hour or 8-hour sleep groups.

Conduct the Experiment

Those in the 8-hour sleep group agree to sleep for 8 hours that night, while those in the 4-hour group agree to wake up after only 4 hours. The following day, all of the participants meet in a classroom.

Collect and Analyze Data

Everyone takes the same math test. The test scores are then compared to see if the amount of sleep the night before had any impact on test scores.

Why Is Random Assignment Important in Psychology Research?

Random assignment is important in psychology research because it helps improve a study’s internal validity. This means that the researchers are sure that the study demonstrates a cause-and-effect relationship between an independent and dependent variable.

Random assignment improves the internal validity by minimizing the risk that there are systematic differences in the participants who are in each group.

Chapter 6: Experimental Research

In this section, we look at some different ways to design an experiment. The primary distinction we will make is between approaches in which each participant experiences one level of the independent variable and approaches in which each participant experiences all levels of the independent variable. The former are called between-subjects experiments and the latter are called within-subjects experiments.

Between-Subjects Experiments

In a between-subjects experiment , each participant is tested in only one condition. For example, a researcher with a sample of 100 college students might assign half of them to write about a traumatic event and the other half write about a neutral event. Or a researcher with a sample of 60 people with severe agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) might assign 20 of them to receive each of three different treatments for that disorder. It is essential in a between-subjects experiment that the researcher assign participants to conditions so that the different groups are, on average, highly similar to each other. Those in a trauma condition and a neutral condition, for example, should include a similar proportion of men and women, and they should have similar average intelligence quotients (IQs), similar average levels of motivation, similar average numbers of health problems, and so on. This is a matter of controlling these extraneous participant variables across conditions so that they do not become confounding variables.

Random Assignment

The primary way that researchers accomplish this kind of control of extraneous variables across conditions is called random assignment , which means using a random process to decide which participants are tested in which conditions. Do not confuse random assignment with random sampling. Random sampling is a method for selecting a sample from a population, and it is rarely used in psychological research. Random assignment is a method for assigning participants in a sample to the different conditions, and it is an important element of all experimental research in psychology and other fields too.

In its strictest sense, random assignment should meet two criteria. One is that each participant has an equal chance of being assigned to each condition (e.g., a 50% chance of being assigned to each of two conditions). The second is that each participant is assigned to a condition independently of other participants. Thus one way to assign participants to two conditions would be to flip a coin for each one. If the coin lands heads, the participant is assigned to Condition A, and if it lands tails, the participant is assigned to Condition B. For three conditions, one could use a computer to generate a random integer from 1 to 3 for each participant. If the integer is 1, the participant is assigned to Condition A; if it is 2, the participant is assigned to Condition B; and if it is 3, the participant is assigned to Condition C. In practice, a full sequence of conditions—one for each participant expected to be in the experiment—is usually created ahead of time, and each new participant is assigned to the next condition in the sequence as he or she is tested. When the procedure is computerized, the computer program often handles the random assignment.

One problem with coin flipping and other strict procedures for random assignment is that they are likely to result in unequal sample sizes in the different conditions. Unequal sample sizes are generally not a serious problem, and you should never throw away data you have already collected to achieve equal sample sizes. However, for a fixed number of participants, it is statistically most efficient to divide them into equal-sized groups. It is standard practice, therefore, to use a kind of modified random assignment that keeps the number of participants in each group as similar as possible. One approach is block randomization . In block randomization, all the conditions occur once in the sequence before any of them is repeated. Then they all occur again before any of them is repeated again. Within each of these “blocks,” the conditions occur in a random order. Again, the sequence of conditions is usually generated before any participants are tested, and each new participant is assigned to the next condition in the sequence. Table 6.2 “Block Randomization Sequence for Assigning Nine Participants to Three Conditions” shows such a sequence for assigning nine participants to three conditions. The Research Randomizer website ( http://www.randomizer.org ) will generate block randomization sequences for any number of participants and conditions. Again, when the procedure is computerized, the computer program often handles the block randomization.

Random assignment is not guaranteed to control all extraneous variables across conditions. It is always possible that just by chance, the participants in one condition might turn out to be substantially older, less tired, more motivated, or less depressed on average than the participants in another condition. However, there are some reasons that this is not a major concern. One is that random assignment works better than one might expect, especially for large samples. Another is that the inferential statistics that researchers use to decide whether a difference between groups reflects a difference in the population takes the “fallibility” of random assignment into account. Yet another reason is that even if random assignment does result in a confounding variable and therefore produces misleading results, this is likely to be detected when the experiment is replicated. The upshot is that random assignment to conditions—although not infallible in terms of controlling extraneous variables—is always considered a strength of a research design.

Treatment and Control Conditions

Between-subjects experiments are often used to determine whether a treatment works. In psychological research, a treatment is any intervention meant to change people’s behavior for the better. This includes psychotherapies and medical treatments for psychological disorders but also interventions designed to improve learning, promote conservation, reduce prejudice, and so on. To determine whether a treatment works, participants are randomly assigned to either a treatment condition , in which they receive the treatment, or a control condition , in which they do not receive the treatment. If participants in the treatment condition end up better off than participants in the control condition—for example, they are less depressed, learn faster, conserve more, express less prejudice—then the researcher can conclude that the treatment works. In research on the effectiveness of psychotherapies and medical treatments, this type of experiment is often called a randomized clinical trial .

There are different types of control conditions. In a no-treatment control condition , participants receive no treatment whatsoever. One problem with this approach, however, is the existence of placebo effects. A placebo is a simulated treatment that lacks any active ingredient or element that should make it effective, and a placebo effect is a positive effect of such a treatment. Many folk remedies that seem to work—such as eating chicken soup for a cold or placing soap under the bedsheets to stop nighttime leg cramps—are probably nothing more than placebos. Although placebo effects are not well understood, they are probably driven primarily by people’s expectations that they will improve. Having the expectation to improve can result in reduced stress, anxiety, and depression, which can alter perceptions and even improve immune system functioning (Price, Finniss, & Benedetti, 2008).

Placebo effects are interesting in their own right (see Note 6.28 “The Powerful Placebo” ), but they also pose a serious problem for researchers who want to determine whether a treatment works. Figure 6.2 “Hypothetical Results From a Study Including Treatment, No-Treatment, and Placebo Conditions” shows some hypothetical results in which participants in a treatment condition improved more on average than participants in a no-treatment control condition. If these conditions (the two leftmost bars in Figure 6.2 “Hypothetical Results From a Study Including Treatment, No-Treatment, and Placebo Conditions” ) were the only conditions in this experiment, however, one could not conclude that the treatment worked. It could be instead that participants in the treatment group improved more because they expected to improve, while those in the no-treatment control condition did not.

Fortunately, there are several solutions to this problem. One is to include a placebo control condition , in which participants receive a placebo that looks much like the treatment but lacks the active ingredient or element thought to be responsible for the treatment’s effectiveness. When participants in a treatment condition take a pill, for example, then those in a placebo control condition would take an identical-looking pill that lacks the active ingredient in the treatment (a “sugar pill”). In research on psychotherapy effectiveness, the placebo might involve going to a psychotherapist and talking in an unstructured way about one’s problems. The idea is that if participants in both the treatment and the placebo control groups expect to improve, then any improvement in the treatment group over and above that in the placebo control group must have been caused by the treatment and not by participants’ expectations. This is what is shown by a comparison of the two outer bars in Figure 6.2 “Hypothetical Results From a Study Including Treatment, No-Treatment, and Placebo Conditions” .

Of course, the principle of informed consent requires that participants be told that they will be assigned to either a treatment or a placebo control condition—even though they cannot be told which until the experiment ends. In many cases the participants who had been in the control condition are then offered an opportunity to have the real treatment. An alternative approach is to use a waitlist control condition , in which participants are told that they will receive the treatment but must wait until the participants in the treatment condition have already received it. This allows researchers to compare participants who have received the treatment with participants who are not currently receiving it but who still expect to improve (eventually). A final solution to the problem of placebo effects is to leave out the control condition completely and compare any new treatment with the best available alternative treatment. For example, a new treatment for simple phobia could be compared with standard exposure therapy. Because participants in both conditions receive a treatment, their expectations about improvement should be similar. This approach also makes sense because once there is an effective treatment, the interesting question about a new treatment is not simply “Does it work?” but “Does it work better than what is already available?”

The Powerful Placebo

Many people are not surprised that placebos can have a positive effect on disorders that seem fundamentally psychological, including depression, anxiety, and insomnia. However, placebos can also have a positive effect on disorders that most people think of as fundamentally physiological. These include asthma, ulcers, and warts (Shapiro & Shapiro, 1999). There is even evidence that placebo surgery—also called “sham surgery”—can be as effective as actual surgery.

Medical researcher J. Bruce Moseley and his colleagues conducted a study on the effectiveness of two arthroscopic surgery procedures for osteoarthritis of the knee (Moseley et al., 2002). The control participants in this study were prepped for surgery, received a tranquilizer, and even received three small incisions in their knees. But they did not receive the actual arthroscopic surgical procedure. The surprising result was that all participants improved in terms of both knee pain and function, and the sham surgery group improved just as much as the treatment groups. According to the researchers, “This study provides strong evidence that arthroscopic lavage with or without débridement [the surgical procedures used] is not better than and appears to be equivalent to a placebo procedure in improving knee pain and self-reported function” (p. 85).

Research has shown that patients with osteoarthritis of the knee who receive a “sham surgery” experience reductions in pain and improvement in knee function similar to those of patients who receive a real surgery.

Within-Subjects Experiments

In a within-subjects experiment , each participant is tested under all conditions. Consider an experiment on the effect of a defendant’s physical attractiveness on judgments of his guilt. Again, in a between-subjects experiment, one group of participants would be shown an attractive defendant and asked to judge his guilt, and another group of participants would be shown an unattractive defendant and asked to judge his guilt. In a within-subjects experiment, however, the same group of participants would judge the guilt of both an attractive and an unattractive defendant.

The primary advantage of this approach is that it provides maximum control of extraneous participant variables. Participants in all conditions have the same mean IQ, same socioeconomic status, same number of siblings, and so on—because they are the very same people. Within-subjects experiments also make it possible to use statistical procedures that remove the effect of these extraneous participant variables on the dependent variable and therefore make the data less “noisy” and the effect of the independent variable easier to detect. We will look more closely at this idea later in the book.

Carryover Effects and Counterbalancing

The primary disadvantage of within-subjects designs is that they can result in carryover effects. A carryover effect is an effect of being tested in one condition on participants’ behavior in later conditions. One type of carryover effect is a practice effect , where participants perform a task better in later conditions because they have had a chance to practice it. Another type is a fatigue effect , where participants perform a task worse in later conditions because they become tired or bored. Being tested in one condition can also change how participants perceive stimuli or interpret their task in later conditions. This is called a context effect . For example, an average-looking defendant might be judged more harshly when participants have just judged an attractive defendant than when they have just judged an unattractive defendant. Within-subjects experiments also make it easier for participants to guess the hypothesis. For example, a participant who is asked to judge the guilt of an attractive defendant and then is asked to judge the guilt of an unattractive defendant is likely to guess that the hypothesis is that defendant attractiveness affects judgments of guilt. This could lead the participant to judge the unattractive defendant more harshly because he thinks this is what he is expected to do. Or it could make participants judge the two defendants similarly in an effort to be “fair.”

Carryover effects can be interesting in their own right. (Does the attractiveness of one person depend on the attractiveness of other people that we have seen recently?) But when they are not the focus of the research, carryover effects can be problematic. Imagine, for example, that participants judge the guilt of an attractive defendant and then judge the guilt of an unattractive defendant. If they judge the unattractive defendant more harshly, this might be because of his unattractiveness. But it could be instead that they judge him more harshly because they are becoming bored or tired. In other words, the order of the conditions is a confounding variable. The attractive condition is always the first condition and the unattractive condition the second. Thus any difference between the conditions in terms of the dependent variable could be caused by the order of the conditions and not the independent variable itself.

There is a solution to the problem of order effects, however, that can be used in many situations. It is counterbalancing , which means testing different participants in different orders. For example, some participants would be tested in the attractive defendant condition followed by the unattractive defendant condition, and others would be tested in the unattractive condition followed by the attractive condition. With three conditions, there would be six different orders (ABC, ACB, BAC, BCA, CAB, and CBA), so some participants would be tested in each of the six orders. With counterbalancing, participants are assigned to orders randomly, using the techniques we have already discussed. Thus random assignment plays an important role in within-subjects designs just as in between-subjects designs. Here, instead of randomly assigning to conditions, they are randomly assigned to different orders of conditions. In fact, it can safely be said that if a study does not involve random assignment in one form or another, it is not an experiment.

There are two ways to think about what counterbalancing accomplishes. One is that it controls the order of conditions so that it is no longer a confounding variable. Instead of the attractive condition always being first and the unattractive condition always being second, the attractive condition comes first for some participants and second for others. Likewise, the unattractive condition comes first for some participants and second for others. Thus any overall difference in the dependent variable between the two conditions cannot have been caused by the order of conditions. A second way to think about what counterbalancing accomplishes is that if there are carryover effects, it makes it possible to detect them. One can analyze the data separately for each order to see whether it had an effect.

When 9 Is “Larger” Than 221

Researcher Michael Birnbaum has argued that the lack of context provided by between-subjects designs is often a bigger problem than the context effects created by within-subjects designs. To demonstrate this, he asked one group of participants to rate how large the number 9 was on a 1-to-10 rating scale and another group to rate how large the number 221 was on the same 1-to-10 rating scale (Birnbaum, 1999). Participants in this between-subjects design gave the number 9 a mean rating of 5.13 and the number 221 a mean rating of 3.10. In other words, they rated 9 as larger than 221! According to Birnbaum, this is because participants spontaneously compared 9 with other one-digit numbers (in which case it is relatively large) and compared 221 with other three-digit numbers (in which case it is relatively small).

Simultaneous Within-Subjects Designs

So far, we have discussed an approach to within-subjects designs in which participants are tested in one condition at a time. There is another approach, however, that is often used when participants make multiple responses in each condition. Imagine, for example, that participants judge the guilt of 10 attractive defendants and 10 unattractive defendants. Instead of having people make judgments about all 10 defendants of one type followed by all 10 defendants of the other type, the researcher could present all 20 defendants in a sequence that mixed the two types. The researcher could then compute each participant’s mean rating for each type of defendant. Or imagine an experiment designed to see whether people with social anxiety disorder remember negative adjectives (e.g., “stupid,” “incompetent”) better than positive ones (e.g., “happy,” “productive”). The researcher could have participants study a single list that includes both kinds of words and then have them try to recall as many words as possible. The researcher could then count the number of each type of word that was recalled. There are many ways to determine the order in which the stimuli are presented, but one common way is to generate a different random order for each participant.

Between-Subjects or Within-Subjects?

Almost every experiment can be conducted using either a between-subjects design or a within-subjects design. This means that researchers must choose between the two approaches based on their relative merits for the particular situation.

Between-subjects experiments have the advantage of being conceptually simpler and requiring less testing time per participant. They also avoid carryover effects without the need for counterbalancing. Within-subjects experiments have the advantage of controlling extraneous participant variables, which generally reduces noise in the data and makes it easier to detect a relationship between the independent and dependent variables.

A good rule of thumb, then, is that if it is possible to conduct a within-subjects experiment (with proper counterbalancing) in the time that is available per participant—and you have no serious concerns about carryover effects—this is probably the best option. If a within-subjects design would be difficult or impossible to carry out, then you should consider a between-subjects design instead. For example, if you were testing participants in a doctor’s waiting room or shoppers in line at a grocery store, you might not have enough time to test each participant in all conditions and therefore would opt for a between-subjects design. Or imagine you were trying to reduce people’s level of prejudice by having them interact with someone of another race. A within-subjects design with counterbalancing would require testing some participants in the treatment condition first and then in a control condition. But if the treatment works and reduces people’s level of prejudice, then they would no longer be suitable for testing in the control condition. This is true for many designs that involve a treatment meant to produce long-term change in participants’ behavior (e.g., studies testing the effectiveness of psychotherapy). Clearly, a between-subjects design would be necessary here.

Remember also that using one type of design does not preclude using the other type in a different study. There is no reason that a researcher could not use both a between-subjects design and a within-subjects design to answer the same research question. In fact, professional researchers often do exactly this.

A substantial part of behavioral research is aimed at the testing of substantive hypotheses. In general, a hypothesis testing study investigates the causal influence of an independent variable (IV) on a dependent variable (DV) . The discussion is restricted to IVs that can be manipulated by the researcher, such as, experimental (E- ) and control (C- ) conditions. Association between IV and DV does not imply that the IV has a causal influence on the DV . The association can be spurious because it is caused by an other variable (OV). OVs that cause spurious associations come from the (1) participant, (2) research situation, and (3) reactions of the participants to the research situation. If participants select their own (E- or C- ) condition or others select a condition for them, the assignment to conditions is usually biased (e.g., males prefer the E-condition and females the C-condition), and participant variables (e.g., participants’ sex) may cause a spurious association between the IV and DV . This selection bias is a systematic error of a design. It is counteracted by random assignment of participants to conditions. Random assignment guarantees that all participant variables are related to the IV by chance, and turns systematic error into random error. Random errors decrease the precision of parameter estimates. Random error variance is reduced by including auxiliary variables into the randomized design. A randomized block design includes an auxiliary variable to divide the participants into relatively homogeneous blocks, and randomly assigns participants to the conditions per block. A covariate is an auxiliary variable that is used in the statistical analysis of the data to reduce the error variance. Cluster randomization randomly assigns clusters (e.g., classes of students) to conditions, which yields specific problems. Random assignment should not be confused with random selection. Random assignment controls for selection bias , whereas random selection makes possible to generalize study results of a sample to the population.

In research, random assignment refers to the process of randomly assigning research participants into groups (conditions) in order to minimize the influence of confounding variables or extraneous factors .

Ideally, through randomization, each research participant has an equal chance of ending up in either the control or treatment condition group.

For example, consider the following two groups under analysis. Under a model such as self-selection or snowball sampling, there may be a chance that the reds cluster themselves into one group (The reason for this would likely be that there is a confounding variable that the researchers have not controlled for):

To maximize the chances that the reds will be evenly split between groups, we could employ a random assignment method, which might produce the following more balanced outcome:

This process is considered a gold standard for experimental research and is generally expected of major studies that explore the effects of independent variables on dependent variables .

However, random assignment is not without its flaws – chief among them being the importance of a sufficiently sized sample which will allow for randomization to tend toward a mean (take, for example, the odds of 50/50 heads and tail after 100 coin flips being higher than 1/1 heads and tail after 2 coin flips). In fact, even in the above example where I randomized the colors, you can see that there are twice as many yellows in the treatment condition than the control condition, likely because of the low number of research participants.

Methods for Random Assignment of Participants

Randomly assigning research participants into controls is relatively easy. However, there is a range of ways to go about it, and each method has its own pros and cons.

For example, there are some strategies – like the matched-pair method – that can help you to control for confounds in interesting ways.

Here are some of the most common methods of random assignment, with explanations of when you might want to use each one:

1. Simple Random Assignment This is the most basic form of random assignment. All participants are pooled together and then divided randomly into groups using an equivalent chance process such as flipping a coin, drawing names from a hat, or using a random number generator. This method is straightforward and ensures each participant has an equal chance of being assigned to any group (Jamison, 2019; Nestor & Schutt, 2018).

2. Block Randomization In this method, the researcher divides the participants into “blocks” or batches of a pre-determined size, which is then randomized (Alferes, 2012). This technique ensures that the researcher will have evenly sized groups by the end of the randomization process. It’s especially useful in clinical trials where balanced and similar-sized groups are vital.

3. Stratified Random Assignment In stratified random assignment, the researcher categorizes the participants based on key characteristics (such as gender, age, ethnicity) before the random allocation process begins. Each stratum is then subjected to simple random assignment. This method is beneficial when the researcher aims to ensure that the groups are balanced with regard to certain characteristics or variables (Rosenberger & Lachin, 2015).

4. Cluster Random Assignment Here, pre-existing groups or clusters, such as schools, households, or communities, are randomly assigned to different conditions of a research study. It’s ideal when individual random assignment is not feasible, or when the treatment is naturally delivered at the group or community level (Blair, Coppock & Humphreys, 2023).

5. Matched-Pair Random Assignment In this method, participants are first paired based on a particular characteristic or set of characteristics that are relevant to the research study, such as age, gender, or a specific health condition. Each pair is then split randomly into different research conditions or groups. This can help control for the influence of specific variables and increase the likelihood that the groups will be comparable, thereby increasing the validity of the results (Nestor & Schutt, 2018).

Random Assignment Examples

1. Pharmaceutical Efficacy Study In this type of research, consider a scenario where a pharmaceutical company wishes to test the potency of two different versions of a medication, Medication A and Medication B. The researcher recruits a group of volunteers and randomly assigns them to receive either Medication A or Medication B. This method ensures that each participant has an equal chance of being given either option, mitigating potential bias from the investigator’s side. It’s an expectation, for example, for FDA approval pre-trials (Rosenberger & Lachin, 2015).

2. Educational Techniques Study In this approach, an educator looking to evaluate a new teaching technique may randomly assign their students into two distinct classrooms. In one classroom, the new teaching technique will be implemented, while in the other, traditional methods will be utilized. The students’ performance will then be analyzed to determine if the new teaching strategy yields better results. To ensure the class cohorts are randomly assigned, we need to make sure there is no interference from parents, administrators, or others.

3. Website Usability Test In this digital-oriented example, a web designer could be researching the most effective layout for a website. Participants would be randomly assigned to use websites with a different layout and their navigation and satisfaction would be subsequently measured. This technique helps identify which design is user-friendlier based on the measured outcomes.

4. Physical Fitness Research For an investigator looking to evaluate the effectiveness of different exercise routines for weight loss, they could randomly assign participants to either a High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) or an endurance-based running program. By studying the participants’ weight changes across a specified time, a conclusion can be drawn on which exercise regime produces better weight loss results.

5. Environmental Psychology Study In this illustration, imagine a psychologist wanting to understand how office settings influence employees’ productivity. He could randomly assign employees to work in one of two offices: one with windows and natural light, the other windowless. The psychologist would then measure their work output to gauge if the environmental conditions impact productivity.

6. Dietary Research Test In this case, a dietician, striving to determine the efficacy of two diets on heart health, might randomly assign participants to adhere to either a Mediterranean diet or a low-fat diet. The dietician would then track cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and other heart health indicators over a determined period to discern which diet benefits heart health the most.

7. Mental Health Study In examining the IMPACT (Improving Mood-Promoting Access to Collaborative Treatment) model, a mental health researcher could randomly assign patients to receive either standard depression treatment or the IMPACT model treatment. Here, the purpose is to cross-compare recovery rates to gauge the effectiveness of the IMPACT model against the standard treatment.

8. Marketing Research A company intending to validate the effectiveness of different marketing strategies could randomly assign customers to receive either email marketing materials or social media marketing materials. Customer response and engagement rates would then be measured to evaluate which strategy is more beneficial and drives better engagement.

9. Sleep Study Research Suppose a researcher wants to investigate the effects of different levels of screen time on sleep quality. The researcher may randomly assign participants to varying amounts of nightly screen time, then compare sleep quality metrics (such as total sleep time, sleep latency, and awakenings during the night).

10. Workplace Productivity Experiment Let’s consider an HR professional who aims to evaluate the efficacy of open office and closed office layouts on employee productivity. She could randomly assign a group of employees to work in either environment and measure metrics such as work completed, attention to detail, and number of errors made to determine which office layout promotes higher productivity.

11. Child Development Study Suppose a developmental psychologist wants to investigate the effect of different learning tools on children’s development. The psychologist could randomly assign children to use either digital learning tools or traditional physical learning tools, such as books, for a fixed period. Subsequently, their development and learning progression would be tracked to determine which tool fosters more effective learning.

12. Traffic Management Research In an urban planning study, researchers could randomly assign streets to implement either traditional stop signs or roundabouts. The researchers, over a predetermined period, could then measure accident rates, traffic flow, and average travel times to identify which traffic management method is safer and more efficient.

13. Energy Consumption Study In a research project comparing the effectiveness of various energy-saving strategies, residents could be randomly assigned to implement either energy-saving light bulbs or regular bulbs in their homes. After a specific duration, their energy consumption would be compared to evaluate which measure yields better energy conservation.

14. Product Testing Research In a consumer goods case, a company looking to launch a new dishwashing detergent could randomly assign the new product or the existing best seller to a group of consumers. By analyzing their feedback on cleaning capabilities, scent, and product usage, the company can find out if the new detergent is an improvement over the existing one Nestor & Schutt, 2018.

15. Physical Therapy Research A physical therapist might be interested in comparing the effectiveness of different treatment regimens for patients with lower back pain. They could randomly assign patients to undergo either manual therapy or exercise therapy for a set duration and later evaluate pain levels and mobility.

Random assignment is effective, but not infallible. Nevertheless, it does help us to achieve greater control over our experiments and minimize the chances that confounding variables are undermining the direct correlation between independent and dependent variables within a study. Over time, when a sufficient number of high-quality and well-designed studies are conducted, with sufficient sample sizes and sufficient generalizability, we can gain greater confidence in the causation between a treatment and its effects.

In experimental research, random assignment is a way of placing participants from your sample into different treatment groups using randomisation.

With simple random assignment, every member of the sample has a known or equal chance of being placed in a control group or an experimental group. Studies that use simple random assignment are also called completely randomised designs .

Random assignment is a key part of experimental design . It helps you ensure that all groups are comparable at the start of a study: any differences between them are due to random factors.

Random assignment is an important part of control in experimental research, because it helps strengthen the internal validity of an experiment.

In experiments, researchers manipulate an independent variable to assess its effect on a dependent variable, while controlling for other variables. To do so, they often use different levels of an independent variable for different groups of participants.

This is called a between-groups or independent measures design.

You use three groups of participants that are each given a different level of the independent variable:

  • A control group that’s given a placebo (no dosage)
  • An experimental group that’s given a low dosage
  • A second experimental group that’s given a high dosage

Random assignment to helps you make sure that the treatment groups don’t differ in systematic or biased ways at the start of the experiment.

If you don’t use random assignment, you may not be able to rule out alternative explanations for your results.

  • Participants recruited from pubs are placed in the control group
  • Participants recruited from local community centres are placed in the low-dosage experimental group
  • Participants recruited from gyms are placed in the high-dosage group

With this type of assignment, it’s hard to tell whether the participant characteristics are the same across all groups at the start of the study. Gym users may tend to engage in more healthy behaviours than people who frequent pubs or community centres, and this would introduce a healthy user bias in your study.

Although random assignment helps even out baseline differences between groups, it doesn’t always make them completely equivalent. There may still be extraneous variables that differ between groups, and there will always be some group differences that arise from chance.

Most of the time, the random variation between groups is low, and, therefore, it’s acceptable for further analysis. This is especially true when you have a large sample. In general, you should always use random assignment in experiments when it is ethically possible and makes sense for your study topic.

Random sampling and random assignment are both important concepts in research, but it’s important to understand the difference between them.

Random sampling (also called probability sampling or random selection) is a way of selecting members of a population to be included in your study. In contrast, random assignment is a way of sorting the sample participants into control and experimental groups.

While random sampling is used in many types of studies, random assignment is only used in between-subjects experimental designs.

Some studies use both random sampling and random assignment, while others use only one or the other.

Random sample vs random assignment

Random sampling enhances the external validity or generalisability of your results, because it helps to ensure that your sample is unbiased and representative of the whole population. This allows you to make stronger statistical inferences .

You use a simple random sample to collect data. Because you have access to the whole population (all employees), you can assign all 8,000 employees a number and use a random number generator to select 300 employees. These 300 employees are your full sample.

Random assignment enhances the internal validity of the study, because it ensures that there are no systematic differences between the participants in each group. This helps you conclude that the outcomes can be attributed to the independent variable .

  • A control group that receives no intervention
  • An experimental group that has a remote team-building intervention every week for a month

You use random assignment to place participants into the control or experimental group. To do so, you take your list of participants and assign each participant a number. Again, you use a random number generator to place each participant in one of the two groups.

To use simple random assignment, you start by giving every member of the sample a unique number. Then, you can use computer programs or manual methods to randomly assign each participant to a group.

  • Random number generator: Use a computer program to generate random numbers from the list for each group.
  • Lottery method: Place all numbers individually into a hat or a bucket, and draw numbers at random for each group.
  • Flip a coin: When you only have two groups, for each number on the list, flip a coin to decide if they’ll be in the control or the experimental group.
  • Use a dice: When you have three groups, for each number on the list, roll a die to decide which of the groups they will be in. For example, assume that rolling 1 or 2 lands them in a control group; 3 or 4 in an experimental group; and 5 or 6 in a second control or experimental group.

This type of random assignment is the most powerful method of placing participants in conditions, because each individual has an equal chance of being placed in any one of your treatment groups.

Random assignment in block designs

In more complicated experimental designs, random assignment is only used after participants are grouped into blocks based on some characteristic (e.g., test score or demographic variable). These groupings mean that you need a larger sample to achieve high statistical power .

For example, a randomised block design involves placing participants into blocks based on a shared characteristic (e.g., college students vs graduates), and then using random assignment within each block to assign participants to every treatment condition. This helps you assess whether the characteristic affects the outcomes of your treatment.

In an experimental matched design , you use blocking and then match up individual participants from each block based on specific characteristics. Within each matched pair or group, you randomly assign each participant to one of the conditions in the experiment and compare their outcomes.

Sometimes, it’s not relevant or ethical to use simple random assignment, so groups are assigned in a different way.

When comparing different groups

Sometimes, differences between participants are the main focus of a study, for example, when comparing children and adults or people with and without health conditions. Participants are not randomly assigned to different groups, but instead assigned based on their characteristics.

In this type of study, the characteristic of interest (e.g., gender) is an independent variable, and the groups differ based on the different levels (e.g., men, women). All participants are tested the same way, and then their group-level outcomes are compared.

When it’s not ethically permissible

When studying unhealthy or dangerous behaviours, it’s not possible to use random assignment. For example, if you’re studying heavy drinkers and social drinkers, it’s unethical to randomly assign participants to one of the two groups and ask them to drink large amounts of alcohol for your experiment.

When you can’t assign participants to groups, you can also conduct a quasi-experimental study . In a quasi-experiment, you study the outcomes of pre-existing groups who receive treatments that you may not have any control over (e.g., heavy drinkers and social drinkers).

These groups aren’t randomly assigned, but may be considered comparable when some other variables (e.g., age or socioeconomic status) are controlled for.

Then, you can use a random number generator or a lottery method to randomly assign each number to a control or experimental group. You can also do so manually, by flipping a coin or rolling a die to randomly assign participants to groups.

Issues in Outcomes Research: An Overview of Randomization Techniques for Clinical Trials

To review and describe randomization techniques used in clinical trials, including simple, block, stratified, and covariate adaptive techniques.

Background:

Clinical trials are required to establish treatment efficacy of many athletic training procedures. In the past, we have relied on evidence of questionable scientific merit to aid the determination of treatment choices. Interest in evidence-based practice is growing rapidly within the athletic training profession, placing greater emphasis on the importance of well-conducted clinical trials. One critical component of clinical trials that strengthens results is random assignment of participants to control and treatment groups. Although randomization appears to be a simple concept, issues of balancing sample sizes and controlling the influence of covariates a priori are important. Various techniques have been developed to account for these issues, including block, stratified randomization, and covariate adaptive techniques.

Advantages:

Athletic training researchers and scholarly clinicians can use the information presented in this article to better conduct and interpret the results of clinical trials. Implementing these techniques will increase the power and validity of findings of athletic medicine clinical trials, which will ultimately improve the quality of care provided.

Outcomes research is critical in the evidence-based health care environment because it addresses scientific questions concerning the efficacy of treatments. Clinical trials are considered the “gold standard” for outcomes in biomedical research. In athletic training, calls for more evidence-based medical research, specifically clinical trials, have been issued. 1 , 2

The strength of clinical trials is their superior ability to measure change over time from a treatment. Treatment differences identified from cross-sectional observational designs rather than experimental clinical trials have methodologic weaknesses, including confounding, cohort effects, and selection bias. 3 For example, using a nonrandomized trial to examine the effectiveness of prophylactic knee bracing to prevent medial collateral ligament injuries may suffer from confounders and jeopardize the results. One possible confounder is a history of knee injuries. Participants with a history of knee injuries may be more likely to wear braces than those with no such history. Participants with a history of injury are more likely to suffer additional knee injuries, unbalancing the groups and influencing the results of the study.

The primary goal of comparative clinical trials is to provide comparisons of treatments with maximum precision and validity. 4 One critical component of clinical trials is random assignment of participants into groups. Randomizing participants helps remove the effect of extraneous variables (eg, age, injury history) and minimizes bias associated with treatment assignment. Randomization is considered by most researchers to be the optimal approach for participant assignment in clinical trials because it strengthens the results and data interpretation. 4 – , 9

One potential problem with small clinical trials (n < 100) 7 is that conventional simple randomization methods, such as flipping a coin, may result in imbalanced sample size and baseline characteristics (ie, covariates) among treatment and control groups. 9 , 10 This imbalance of baseline characteristics can influence the comparison between treatment and control groups and introduce potential confounding factors. Many procedures have been proposed for random group assignment of participants in clinical trials. 11 Simple, block, stratified, and covariate adaptive randomizations are some examples. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages, which must be carefully considered before a method is selected. Our purpose is to introduce the concept and significance of randomization and to review several conventional and relatively new randomization techniques to aid in the design and implementation of valid clinical trials.

What Is Randomization?

Randomization is the process of assigning participants to treatment and control groups, assuming that each participant has an equal chance of being assigned to any group. 12 Randomization has evolved into a fundamental aspect of scientific research methodology. Demands have increased for more randomized clinical trials in many areas of biomedical research, such as athletic training. 2 , 13 In fact, in the last 2 decades, internationally recognized major medical journals, such as the Journal of the American Medical Association and the BMJ , have been increasingly interested in publishing studies reporting results from randomized controlled trials. 5

Since Fisher 14 first introduced the idea of randomization in a 1926 agricultural study, the academic community has deemed randomization an essential tool for unbiased comparisons of treatment groups. Five years after Fisher's introductory paper, the first randomized clinical trial involving tuberculosis was conducted. 15 A total of 24 participants were paired (ie, 12 comparable pairs), and by a flip of a coin, each participant within the pair was assigned to either the control or treatment group. By employing randomization, researchers offer each participant an equal chance of being assigned to groups, which makes the groups comparable on the dependent variable by eliminating potential bias. Indeed, randomization of treatments in clinical trials is the only means of avoiding systematic characteristic bias of participants assigned to different treatments. Although randomization may be accomplished with a simple coin toss, more appropriate and better methods are often needed, especially in small clinical trials. These other methods will be discussed in this review.

Why Randomize?

Researchers demand randomization for several reasons. First, participants in various groups should not differ in any systematic way. In a clinical trial, if treatment groups are systematically different, trial results will be biased. Suppose that participants are assigned to control and treatment groups in a study examining the efficacy of a walking intervention. If a greater proportion of older adults is assigned to the treatment group, then the outcome of the walking intervention may be influenced by this imbalance. The effects of the treatment would be indistinguishable from the influence of the imbalance of covariates, thereby requiring the researcher to control for the covariates in the analysis to obtain an unbiased result. 16

Second, proper randomization ensures no a priori knowledge of group assignment (ie, allocation concealment). That is, researchers, participants, and others should not know to which group the participant will be assigned. Knowledge of group assignment creates a layer of potential selection bias that may taint the data. Schulz and Grimes 17 stated that trials with inadequate or unclear randomization tended to overestimate treatment effects up to 40% compared with those that used proper randomization. The outcome of the trial can be negatively influenced by this inadequate randomization.

Statistical techniques such as analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), multivariate ANCOVA, or both, are often used to adjust for covariate imbalance in the analysis stage of the clinical trial. However, the interpretation of this postadjustment approach is often difficult because imbalance of covariates frequently leads to unanticipated interaction effects, such as unequal slopes among subgroups of covariates. 18 , 19 One of the critical assumptions in ANCOVA is that the slopes of regression lines are the same for each group of covariates (ie, homogeneity of regression slopes). The adjustment needed for each covariate group may vary, which is problematic because ANCOVA uses the average slope across the groups to adjust the outcome variable. Thus, the ideal way of balancing covariates among groups is to apply sound randomization in the design stage of a clinical trial (before the adjustment procedure) instead of after data collection. In such instances, random assignment is necessary and guarantees validity for statistical tests of significance that are used to compare treatments.

How To Randomize?

Many procedures have been proposed for the random assignment of participants to treatment groups in clinical trials. In this article, common randomization techniques, including simple randomization, block randomization, stratified randomization, and covariate adaptive randomization, are reviewed. Each method is described along with its advantages and disadvantages. It is very important to select a method that will produce interpretable, valid results for your study.

Simple Randomization

Randomization based on a single sequence of random assignments is known as simple randomization. 10 This technique maintains complete randomness of the assignment of a person to a particular group. The most common and basic method of simple randomization is flipping a coin. For example, with 2 treatment groups (control versus treatment), the side of the coin (ie, heads  =  control, tails  =  treatment) determines the assignment of each participant. Other methods include using a shuffled deck of cards (eg, even  =  control, odd  =  treatment) or throwing a die (eg, below and equal to 3  =  control, over 3  =  treatment). A random number table found in a statistics book or computer-generated random numbers can also be used for simple randomization of participants.

This randomization approach is simple and easy to implement in a clinical trial. In large trials (n > 200), simple randomization can be trusted to generate similar numbers of participants among groups. However, randomization results could be problematic in relatively small sample size clinical trials (n < 100), resulting in an unequal number of participants among groups. For example, using a coin toss with a small sample size (n  =  10) may result in an imbalance such that 7 participants are assigned to the control group and 3 to the treatment group ( Figure 1 ).

Block Randomization

The block randomization method is designed to randomize participants into groups that result in equal sample sizes. This method is used to ensure a balance in sample size across groups over time. Blocks are small and balanced with predetermined group assignments, which keeps the numbers of participants in each group similar at all times. According to Altman and Bland, 10 the block size is determined by the researcher and should be a multiple of the number of groups (ie, with 2 treatment groups, block size of either 4 or 6). Blocks are best used in smaller increments as researchers can more easily control balance. 7 After block size has been determined, all possible balanced combinations of assignment within the block (ie, equal number for all groups within the block) must be calculated. Blocks are then randomly chosen to determine the participants' assignment into the groups.

For a clinical trial with control and treatment groups involving 40 participants, a randomized block procedure would be as follows: (1) a block size of 4 is chosen, (2) possible balanced combinations with 2 C (control) and 2 T (treatment) subjects are calculated as 6 (TTCC, TCTC, TCCT, CTTC, CTCT, CCTT), and (3) blocks are randomly chosen to determine the assignment of all 40 participants (eg, one random sequence would be [TTCC / TCCT / CTTC / CTTC / TCCT / CCTT / TTCC / TCTC / CTCT / TCTC]). This procedure results in 20 participants in both the control and treatment groups ( Figure 2 ).

Although balance in sample size may be achieved with this method, groups may be generated that are rarely comparable in terms of certain covariates. 6 For example, one group may have more participants with secondary diseases (eg, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cancer) that could confound the data and may negatively influence the results of the clinical trial. Pocock and Simon 11 stressed the importance of controlling for these covariates because of serious consequences to the interpretation of the results. Such an imbalance could introduce bias in the statistical analysis and reduce the power of the study. 4 , 6 , 8 Hence, sample size and covariates must be balanced in small clinical trials.

Stratified Randomization

The stratified randomization method addresses the need to control and balance the influence of covariates. This method can be used to achieve balance among groups in terms of participants' baseline characteristics (covariates). Specific covariates must be identified by the researcher who understands the potential influence each covariate has on the dependent variable. Stratified randomization is achieved by generating a separate block for each combination of covariates, and participants are assigned to the appropriate block of covariates. After all participants have been identified and assigned into blocks, simple randomization occurs within each block to assign participants to one of the groups.

The stratified randomization method controls for the possible influence of covariates that would jeopardize the conclusions of the clinical trial. For example, a clinical trial of different rehabilitation techniques after a surgical procedure will have a number of covariates. It is well known that the age of the patient affects the rate of healing. Thus, age could be a confounding variable and influence the outcome of the clinical trial. Stratified randomization can balance the control and treatment groups for age or other identified covariates.

For example, with 2 groups involving 40 participants, the stratified randomization method might be used to control the covariates of sex (2 levels: male, female) and body mass index (3 levels: underweight, normal, overweight) between study arms. With these 2 covariates, possible block combinations total 6 (eg, male, underweight). A simple randomization procedure, such as flipping a coin, is used to assign the participants within each block to one of the treatment groups ( Figure 3 ).

Although stratified randomization is a relatively simple and useful technique, especially for smaller clinical trials, it becomes complicated to implement if many covariates must be controlled. 20 For example, too many block combinations may lead to imbalances in overall treatment allocations because a large number of blocks can generate small participant numbers within the block. Therneau 21 purported that a balance in covariates begins to fail when the number of blocks approaches half the sample size. If another 4-level covariate was added to the example, the number of block combinations would increase from 6 to 24 (2 × 3 × 4), for an average of fewer than 2 (40 / 24  =  1.7) participants per block, reducing the usefulness of the procedure to balance the covariates and jeopardizing the validity of the clinical trial. In small studies, it may not be feasible to stratify more than 1 or 2 covariates because the number of blocks can quickly approach the number of participants. 10

Stratified randomization has another limitation: it works only when all participants have been identified before group assignment. This method is rarely applicable, however, because clinical trial participants are often enrolled one at a time on a continuous basis. When baseline characteristics of all participants are not available before assignment, using stratified randomization is difficult. 7

Covariate Adaptive Randomization

Covariate adaptive randomization has been recommended by many researchers as a valid alternative randomization method for clinical trials. 9 , 22 In covariate adaptive randomization, a new participant is sequentially assigned to a particular treatment group by taking into account the specific covariates and previous assignments of participants. 9 , 12 , 18 , 23 , 24 Covariate adaptive randomization uses the method of minimization by assessing the imbalance of sample size among several covariates. This covariate adaptive approach was first described by Taves. 23

The Taves covariate adaptive randomization method allows for the examination of previous participant group assignments to make a case-by-case decision on group assignment for each individual who enrolls in the study. Consider again the example of 2 groups involving 40 participants, with sex (2 levels: male, female) and body mass index (3 levels: underweight, normal, overweight) as covariates. Assume the first 9 participants have already been randomly assigned to groups by flipping a coin. The 9 participants' group assignments are broken down by covariate level in Figure 4 . Now the 10th participant, who is male and underweight, needs to be assigned to a group (ie, control versus treatment). Based on the characteristics of the 10th participant, the Taves method adds marginal totals of the corresponding covariate categories for each group and compares the totals. The participant is assigned to the group with the lower covariate total to minimize imbalance. In this example, the appropriate categories are male and underweight, which results in the total of 3 (2 for male category + 1 for underweight category) for the control group and a total of 5 (3 for male category + 2 for underweight category) for the treatment group. Because the sum of marginal totals is lower for the control group (3 < 5), the 10th participant is assigned to the control group ( Figure 5 ).

The Pocock and Simon method 11 of covariate adaptive randomization is similar to the method Taves 23 described. The difference in this approach is the temporary assignment of participants to both groups. This method uses the absolute difference between groups to determine group assignment. To minimize imbalance, the participant is assigned to the group determined by the lowest sum of the absolute differences among the covariates between the groups. For example, using the previous situation in assigning the 10th participant to a group, the Pocock and Simon method would (1) assign the 10th participant temporarily to the control group, resulting in marginal totals of 3 for male category and 2 for underweight category; (2) calculate the absolute difference between control and treatment group (males: 3 control – 3 treatment  =  0; underweight: 2 control – 2 treatment  =  0) and sum (0 + 0  =  0); (3) temporarily assign the 10th participant to the treatment group, resulting in marginal totals of 4 for male category and 3 for underweight category; (4) calculate the absolute difference between control and treatment group (males: 2 control – 4 treatment  =  2; underweight: 1 control – 3 treatment  =  2) and sum (2 + 2  =  4); and (5) assign the 10th participant to the control group because of the lowest sum of absolute differences (0 < 4).

Pocock and Simon 11 also suggested using a variance approach. Instead of calculating absolute difference among groups, this approach calculates the variance among treatment groups. Although the variance method performs similarly to the absolute difference method, both approaches suffer from the limitation of handling only categorical covariates. 25

Frane 18 introduced a covariate adaptive randomization for both continuous and categorical types. Frane used P values to identify imbalance among treatment groups: a smaller P value represents more imbalance among treatment groups.

The Frane method for assigning participants to either the control or treatment group would include (1) temporarily assigning the participant to both the control and treatment groups; (2) calculating P values for each of the covariates using a t test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for continuous variables and goodness-of-fit χ 2 test for categorical variables; (3) determining the minimum P value for each control or treatment group, which indicates more imbalance among treatment groups; and (4) assigning the participant to the group with the larger minimum P value (ie, try to avoid more imbalance in groups).

Going back to the previous example of assigning the 10th participant (male and underweight) to a group, the Frane method would result in the assignment to the control group. The steps used to make this decision were calculating P values for each of the covariates using the χ 2 goodness-of-fit test represented in the Table . The t tests and ANOVAs were not used because the covariates in this example were categorical. Based on the Table , the lowest minimum P values were 1.0 for the control group and 0.317 for the treatment group. The 10th participant was assigned to the control group because of the higher minimum P value, which indicates better balance in the control group (1.0 > 0.317).

Covariate adaptive randomization produces less imbalance than other conventional randomization methods and can be used successfully to balance important covariates among control and treatment groups. 6 Although the balance of covariates among groups using the stratified randomization method begins to fail when the number of blocks approaches half the sample size, covariate adaptive randomization can better handle the problem of increasing numbers of covariates (ie, increased block combinations). 9

One concern of these covariate adaptive randomization methods is that treatment assignments sometimes become highly predictable. Investigators using covariate adaptive randomization sometimes come to believe that group assignment for the next participant can be readily predicted, going against the basic concept of randomization. 12 , 26 , 27 This predictability stems from the ongoing assignment of participants to groups wherein the current allocation of participants may suggest future participant group assignment. In their review, Scott et al 9 argued that this predictability is also true of other methods, including stratified randomization, and it should not be overly penalized. Zielhuis et al 28 and Frane 18 suggested a practical approach to prevent predictability: a small number of participants should be randomly assigned into the groups before the covariate adaptive randomization technique being applied.

The complicated computation process of covariate adaptive randomization increases the administrative burden, thereby limiting its use in practice. A user-friendly computer program for covariate adaptive randomization is available (free of charge) upon request from the authors (M.K., B.G.R., or J.H.P.). 29

Conclusions

Our purpose was to introduce randomization, including its concept and significance, and to review several randomization techniques to guide athletic training researchers and practitioners to better design their randomized clinical trials. Many factors can affect the results of clinical research, but randomization is considered the gold standard in most clinical trials. It eliminates selection bias, ensures balance of sample size and baseline characteristics, and is an important step in guaranteeing the validity of statistical tests of significance used to compare treatment groups.

Before choosing a randomization method, several factors need to be considered, including the size of the clinical trial; the need for balance in sample size, covariates, or both; and participant enrollment. 16 Figure 6 depicts a flowchart designed to help select an appropriate randomization technique. For example, a power analysis for a clinical trial of different rehabilitation techniques after a surgical procedure indicated a sample size of 80. A well-known covariate for this study is age, which must be balanced among groups. Because of the nature of the study with postsurgical patients, participant recruitment and enrollment will be continuous. Using the flowchart, the appropriate randomization technique is covariate adaptive randomization technique.

Simple randomization works well for a large trial (eg, n > 200) but not for a small trial (n < 100). 7 To achieve balance in sample size, block randomization is desirable. To achieve balance in baseline characteristics, stratified randomization is widely used. Covariate adaptive randomization, however, can achieve better balance than other randomization methods and can be successfully used for clinical trials in an effective manner.

Randomized Controlled Trial

What is a randomized controlled trial.

A Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) is a scientific study that evaluates the effectiveness of an intervention by randomly assigning participants from an eligible population into either a treatment group that receives the intervention or a control group that does not.

The Basic Idea

Imagine that you wanted to know how effective an antidepressant is. While you could give the medication to an entire group of people who experience depression, it would be difficult to accurately measure its effectiveness because you wouldn’t be able to compare the results with a group of people who hadn’t taken the medication. 

As such, you may design a clinical experiment where one group of people receive the antidepressant, and the other group—the control group—would not. In a randomized controlled trial, participants are randomly selected to be in the treatment (or experimental) group or the control group to avoid selection bias. By comparing the outcomes of the treatment group to the control group, you would be able to assess the effectiveness of the antidepressant more accurately.

Randomization

The hope in a randomized controlled trial is that the only significant difference between the people in the control and treatment groups is whether they receive the treatment or intervention being studied. Due to the random allocation of people into the groups, participant characteristics such as age, race, and gender are usually balanced, which allows researchers to attribute any difference in outcome to the intervention. 

There are a few different ways to randomize participants: 1

  • Simple randomization : the most straightforward way to randomize people into groups, using tools like random number generators to assign all participants
  • Block randomization : assigning participants into blocks first, and then assigning each block to a group. If you have 100 participants, you could divide them into four blocks of 25 each, then assign blocks 1 and 3 to the treatment group and blocks 2 and 4 to the control group.
  • Stratified Randomization : assigning participants into different groups based on characteristics that could affect the results. For example, if you want an equal number of men and women in your treatment and control group, you would use sex to sort participants—assigning an even amount to each group

Randomization is done with the aim of balancing known and unknown confounders across groups, but it's not guaranteed that all characteristics will be perfectly balanced, especially in smaller trials.

Randomized controlled trials are the most rigorous way of determining whether a cause-effect relation exists between treatment and outcome and for assessing the cost effectiveness of a treatment. – Bonnie Sibbald and Martin Roland, researchers for the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre at the University of Manchester, in their 1998 paper Understanding controlled trials: Why are randomised controlled trials important? 2

Control group: A group of participants that do not receive the intervention that is being studied, whose outcomes are compared to a treatment group

Treatment group: A group of participants that receives the intervention that is being studied.

Selection bias: A flaw in a research study where there is bias in the sample selection process, such as allocating people into a control or treatment group. For example, if researchers ask people to volunteer for each group, it could lead people with specific characteristics to volunteer and skew the outcomes. 3

Single-blind experiment: An experimental design in which the participants do not know whether they are receiving the treatment or a placebo, but the researchers do.

Double-blind experiment: An experimental design where both the participants and the researchers are unaware as to what condition each of the participants are in.

Placebo: A faux substance or intervention used in a blind experiment so that participants are unaware if they are receiving the intervention. Using a placebo in an experiment allows researchers to identify whether outcomes are psychological effects of thinking someone received treatment or actually due to receiving the intervention. 

Power (Statistical Power): ensuring that you have enough people in both the control and treatment groups to see a statistical association between treatment and outcome. If the effect of a treatment is minimal, you will require a larger sample size to infer correlation.

Confounding Variable: an extraneous variable that is not appropriately controlled in a study. The presence of a confounding variable can create a false impression of a cause-and-effect relationship between treatment and outcome. For example, if a researcher is trying to see if exercise leads to weight loss, a confounding variable would be diet. 

Response bias: our tendency to provide inaccurate, or even false, answers to self-report questions, such as those asked on surveys or in structured interviews.

It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when randomized controlled trials began, but James Lind, a Scottish physician, is often credited as the first person to conduct a controlled trial in 1754. 

During the eighteenth century, the British were involved in the War of Austrian Succession against France and Spain, with many men at sea in battle. At this time, more sailors were dying of scurvy than actually dying in combat. People didn’t know what was causing the illness, but Lind was determined to find out. During a voyage, Lind divided 12 sick sailors into six different pairs, and provided them each with different interventions. Notably, one pair received oranges and lemons—and they were the only sailors whose health improved. From this experiment, Lind concluded that citrus fruit helped to cure scurvy. 4

While Lind’s sample size looks nothing like today’s clinical trials, and we can’t be sure if the pairs were randomly assigned, it was one of the first times that various conditions (including a control condition) were used in testing the effectiveness of an intervention. Throughout the 19th century, the use of control groups became more popular, but researchers were not yet aware of the importance of randomizing the groups.

Randomized controlled trials, as we know them today, began to take shape in the mid-20th century. The British Medical Research Council’s experiment using streptomycin as a treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis (1948) is often cited as the first real randomized controlled trial. In this study, patients with pulmonary tuberculosis were randomly assigned to either a control group, that would only be treated through bed rest (at the time, the current standard treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis), or a treatment group, where they would receive streptomycin and bed rest. 

The researchers had no prior knowledge as to who would receive which treatment until they were given an envelope right before seeing a patient, and the patients were unaware that they were in a trial, minimizing the influence of bias (and maximizing the unethicalness ). 

The researchers were more accurately able to draw a relationship between receiving streptomycin and improved health outcomes. With each group being made up of around 55 patients, only four patients in the treatment group died within six months of receiving treatment compared to 15 that were assigned only to bed rest. 5

After the 1948 experiment, randomized controlled trials gained popularity and quickly became the gold-standard in most fields, especially in medical research.

James Lind 6

A Scottish physician who is credited with conducting the first randomized controlled trial in 1754, where he studied the effects of six different interventions to cure scurvy in sailors. He found that eating citrus fruit helped to diminish symptoms of scurvy. Throughout his career, Lind continued to advocate for the health of seamen, outlining best hygiene practices and environmental factors that would lead to better health when at sea. 

Archie Cochrane 7

Often referred to as the father of evidence-based medicine, Cochrane was a Scottish medical researcher who believed there was a lack of scientific evidence backing medical interventions in the 20th century. He conducted one of the first clinical trials in 1941, exploring how yeast could reduce starvation in prisoners. 8 Throughout his career, Cochrane was a strong advocate for the need for proper assessment of reliable evidence in medical care. 

Austin Bradford Hill 9

A British scientist who began his career in economics but later transitioned into medical research, Hill pioneered the randomization component of randomized controlled trials. He proposed the randomization of subjects into treatment and control groups in the British Medical Research Council’s 1948 study on the efficacy of streptomycin in treating pulmonary tuberculosis. This trial set the standard for future control trials. Later, Hill worked with Richard Doll to demonstrate the causal relationship between smoking and lung cancer. 

Consequences

Randomized controlled trials are considered the gold standard in clinical research and are required by regulatory bodies, such as the The Food and Drug Administration, to approve new treatments for the market. 

They are effective as they help to isolate the effects of an intervention and more accurately identify a cause-and-effect relationship. While other study designs can find causal associations between an intervention and outcome, they cannot rule out that there may be other factors influencing these outcomes. Randomized controlled trials provide greater command over variables, ensuring that the study is measuring what it is meant to be measuring. 

Moreover, randomized controlled trials help to minimize participant and researcher bias. Through the random allocation of participants into the treatment and control groups, the study avoids selection bias, minimizing the influence of demographic information on outcomes. 

Randomized controlled trials that are double-blind further minimize bias, as neither participant or researcher knows who is receiving the intervention. This allows researchers to know if outcomes are due to an intervention or due to the placebo effect , where participants report outcomes because they psychologically feel better, believing they have received treatment. 

While we usually discuss randomized controlled trials in relation to clinical research, they are also valued in other fields. A notable example is the Perry Preschool Project, where American psychologist David Weikart examined how the intervention of high-quality early childhood education would affect the future potential of low-income, barriered children. 

Weikart randomly divided 123 children into either the intervention group or the control group and monitored outcomes from 1962 to 1967, finding that early, high-quality intervention led to positive outcomes in education, economic performance, crime prevention, health, family, and children. 10

Today, randomized controlled trials have transformed medical research, behavioral interventions, and policy-making, helping researchers make evidence-based conclusions about the efficacy of an intervention.

Controversies

While randomized controlled trials are known as the gold-standard in medical and health research, there are still a few drawbacks. If researchers use simple or block randomization, groups may not have balanced characteristics, skewing the results. 

Additionally, randomized controlled trials require large sample sizes, long durations, and substantial financial resources to conduct effectively. Some interventions may require years to discover significant outcomes or results—and it’s never guaranteed. Additionally, since randomized controlled trials are longitudinal, sometimes taking years, researchers are likely to lose participants along the way. 11

The use of a control group that does not receive treatment also comes with some potential issues. If the experiment is not blind, and some participants know they are not receiving the intervention, it is more difficult to get them to continue to share their outcomes. They may lose interest in participating in the study because they do not feel like they are benefitting from it. 

Those that do continue to participate could fall victim to response bias —where people provide inaccurate or false answers to self-report questions—especially if they are part of the treatment group and want to share positive results. One way to combat this is through double-blind experiments, with neither researcher or patient knowing whether an individual is receiving the treatment or placebo. This also negates the impact of the demand characteristic bias, where participants change their behavior to fit the outcome they think the experiment is looking for.

It is also argued that withholding an intervention from a group that would benefit from it—like medication that can help to cure a disease—is unethical. Ideally, all people suffering from the disease would be able to access medication, but to ensure that the medication is effective, randomized controlled trials can be necessary. Being able to more accurately tie an intervention to a positive outcome, as other factors are mitigated through randomization, researchers are more confident in the effectiveness of an intervention, which could help hundreds more down the line. 

Randomized Controlled Trials and Charitable Giving 12

Charities and non-profit organizations have to compete against one another for donor resources. It is therefore important that these organizations leverage behavioral insights to understand how best to attract and retain donors. 

In 2013, the Zurich Community Trust conducted a study to see how the framing of a donation ask influenced the likelihood that someone would donate. The Zurich Community Trust randomly divided 702 of their existing donors into one of three treatment groups. The first group—the control group—received a message that asked them to make a one-off increase in their donations with the usual options of £1, £2, £3, £5, or £10. Group two received a message that invited them to increase their donations annually with the same amount options as group one. Group three received a message that invited them to increase their donations annually by £2, £4, £6, £8, or £10. 

The Zurich Community Trust found that participants in the control group, who were asked for one-off donations, increased their donations by more than those who were offered the chance to increase donations annually. From this study, the trust could infer that asking donors year over year to increase their donations would result in greater donations rather than asking them from the start to commit to an annual increase. 

Using Randomized Controlled Trials to Test the Effectiveness of Community Therapy 13

Randomized controlled trials are often used in behavioral science to study the effectiveness of an intervention. Depression and anxiety place a significant burden on health services, however, it can be challenging to convince individuals to seek out professional help. This may be due to the stigma around receiving mental health support, which may be why a community setting could motivate more people to get treatment.

In 2018, researchers in Scotland conducted a study to determine if community-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) had a positive effect on depression and anxiety. Participants were allocated to two groups: one that received treatment immediately, and another that would receive treatment a few months later. The researchers monitored the feelings of anxiety and depression in both groups—comparing the results of the group that had already started attending community therapy groups to those that hadn’t. They found that CBT classes within a community setting were effective for reducing depression and anxiety. 

To make the study stronger and determine that it was the community aspect of therapy that led to positive outcomes, the researchers could have compared a treatment group to another group of participants receiving individual therapy. However, allowing both groups to receive the intervention at different times allowed for more people to receive the help they needed.

The Random Selection Experiment Method

When researchers need to select a representative sample from a larger population, they often utilize a method known as random selection. In this selection process, each member of a group stands an equal chance of being chosen as a participant in the study.

Random Selection vs. Random Assignment

How does random selection differ from  random assignment ? Random selection refers to how the sample is drawn from the population as a whole, whereas random assignment refers to how the participants are then assigned to either the experimental or control groups.

It is possible to have both random selection and random assignment in an experiment.

Imagine that you use random selection to draw 500 people from a population to participate in your study. You then use random assignment to assign 250 of your participants to a control group (the group that does not receive the treatment or independent variable) and you assign 250 of the participants to the experimental group (the group that receives the treatment or independent variable).

Why do researchers utilize random selection? The purpose is to increase the generalizability of the results.

By drawing a random sample from a larger population, the goal is that the sample will be representative of the larger group and less likely to be subject to bias.

Factors Involved

Imagine a researcher is selecting people to participate in a study. To pick participants, they may choose people using a technique that is the statistical equivalent of a coin toss.

They may begin by using random selection to pick geographic regions from which to draw participants. They may then use the same selection process to pick cities, neighborhoods, households, age ranges, and individual participants.

Another important thing to remember is that larger sample sizes tend to be more representative. Even random selection can lead to a biased or limited sample if the sample size is small.

When the sample size is small, an unusual participant can have an undue influence over the sample as a whole. Using a larger sample size tends to dilute the effects of unusual participants and prevent them from skewing the results.

Study pinpoints two measures that predict effective managers

Good managers are hard to find. Most companies pick managers based on personality traits, age, or experience — and according to a recent National Bureau of Economic Research paper , they may be doing it wrong.

Co-authored by David Deming , Isabelle and Scott Black Professor of Political Economy at Harvard Kennedy School , the study concludes that companies are better off when they select managers based on two measures highly predictive of leadership skills.

The Gazette talked to Deming about the study’s findings. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What are the qualities that make a good manager, and why is it so hard to find them?

Being a good manager requires many different qualities that often don’t exist in the same person. First is the ability to relate well to others, to create what Amy Edmondson and others have called psychological safety, meaning the ability to make people feel stable and secure in their role so they are comfortable with critical feedback. That’s a key component of being a good manager. Communication skills are also essential. As a manager, you should know that there’s not one good way to deliver feedback to your workers because the words you use and the way you frame your statements also matter.

At the same time, you must also be analytically minded and open to different ways of doing things and be able to take a step back and reassess whether your team or organization is working as well as it could be. Overall, being a good manager requires both interpersonal skills and analytical skills. You also need to have a strategic vision — which is something that our study does not capture. Managers must have a sense of what their organization is trying to accomplish. Any one of those skills is hard to find. Having all three, and knowing when to use them, is even more difficult.

One of the paper’s most surprising findings is that people who self-nominate to be managers perform worse than those randomly assigned. Why is that?

In the study, we randomly assign the role of manager. That was half of the experiment. In the other half, we asked people which role they wanted, and we assigned the role of manager to the people with the greatest preferences for being in charge.

We found that people with the greatest preference for being in charge are, on average, worse than randomly assigned managers. It’s hard to know exactly why because there are a lot of factors in play, but we show evidence in the paper that they are overconfident in their own capabilities, and they think they understand other people better than they do. We all know people like that.

This was a surprising finding. And it’s important, because interest in leadership plays a big role in how companies pick managers. Companies have their own hiring and employee evaluation policies of course — they don’t pick managers randomly like we did — but it’s surely true that preference for leadership plays a big part in who gets promoted to management. For example, we find that men are much more likely to prefer being in charge, but they aren’t any more effective than women in the role of manager.

The main lesson I take from this finding is that there’s a big difference between preferences and skills; just because you want to be a manager doesn’t mean you’re going to be good at it. Organizations that take more scientific or analytical approaches to identifying good managers are going to come out ahead.

What are the best predictors for selecting a good manager, according to your paper?

It has nothing to do with how a person looks, how they speak, or what their preferences or personality traits are. None of those things are predictive. There are only two things that are: One is IQ as measured by the Raven’s Progressive Matrices test, which measures general and fluid intelligence, spatial reasoning, problem-solving, etc. But the one that’s more interesting to me is a measure of what we call economic-decision-making skill, or the ability to allocate resources effectively, that my co-authors and I created in a different paper . We use that very same measure in this experiment, and we found that it is highly predictive of being a good manager.

Why do you think these two tests predict being a good manager, but other traits like age, experience, personality, or gender do not?

If you want to predict who’s going to be going to be good at a specific performance task, in this case, managing a team to solve a problem, the best predictors are most closely related to what you’re asking someone to do. What matters is the ability to make decisions about the allocation of resources under time constraints; how to organize and motivate the members of your team to produce the most output. The lesson for me is that it’s a crutch to use personality traits and preferences to predict performance because they’re not that closely related to the performance you’re interested in.

We see this pattern elsewhere. There’s a huge research literature on figuring out who’s going to be a good teacher in the classroom, and study after study finds that characteristics such as age, gender, education, SAT scores, college major don’t do a very good job of predicting who’s going to be a good teacher. Yet if I put you in the classroom for a little bit of time and I see how much you improve student learning, that is a very good predictor, because it’s very closely related to the thing you ask people to do. If you want to know who’s going to be a good manager, make them manage. Don’t just rely on personality characteristics, or whether they raise their hand to say, “I want to do it.”

Why is it important to have good managers?

At the broadest level, it’s important to have good management because companies, universities, and other organizations face such an open-ended strategic landscape. They must tackle a variety of issues, such as where they should direct their attention, what are the most important things to focus on, and how to deploy resources toward solving certain problems. If you look at major corporations, they tend to be conglomerates that have many different divisions that do many different things. Google, just to give one example, in the beginning had a core product: a search engine. But now Google is Alphabet, and it still does search, but it also does venture investing, autonomous driving, drug discovery, and many other things.

If you zoom down to the micro level, a manager who leads a team of three or four employees faces the same sort of problems: What should I focus on? Who’s going to do what? How do I give people feedback? What are each person’s strengths and weaknesses? To be an effective manager, you must think about how to assign workers to roles to achieve the greatest success, and you must know how to communicate with a person to help them improve. The skill of being a good manager is probably underappreciated. Good managers are not necessarily the most vocal leaders; sometimes they’re quiet but effective, like diamonds in the rough.

The paper you and your co-authors wrote came up with a novel method to identify good managers . Can you explain?

It’s a hard problem to solve, because part of what makes a good manager is the people they’re supervising. If you give a manager a team of workers who aren’t very capable, that team is going to do a poor job, and if the workers are all-stars, they will make the manager look good regardless. In other words, when a team succeeds, we don’t know how much credit or blame to assign to the manager compared to other members of the team.

To solve that problem, we bring a bunch of people into a controlled lab setting, and we assign them a group task that they must do together. We randomly assign the role of manager to one of the three people on the team, and we ask them to lead their group in the task, and we see how well they do. Then we randomly assign each manager again to another group of workers. Each time, as a manager, you’re getting a different set of people, so we have a way to account for the quality of the workers you’re getting. And since we’re assigning workers, we can also identify who’s a good worker because we can see their performance with different managers.

What do you think the paper’s main contributions are to the literature of leadership and management in general?

I think the paper’s main contribution is to open the door to the idea that we can be scientific and analytical about selecting managers and that management is not a squishy thing that we can never get our arms around. We can measure management skill, and measuring it well unlocks huge productivity gains for organizations and for people. We’re doing this experiment in a lab; it’s not a real-world setting, but we are in talks with several folks to do this in the field. I do think it would work because we’re asking people to manage and we’re measuring their performance, and we’re showing you that there’s a repeatable predictive quality to this. Our contribution is to outline a very simple methodology for measuring who’s a good manager, and to say to people that they can use it. Figure it out in your own organization, and you will unlock big productivity gains.
