Motivational Quotes for the PhD Journey

quotes on phd life

The PhD journey is a long one where it’s easy and normal to feel unmotivated for certain stretches of time. We all need a little inspiration to perk us up during those days. Jenny Mak offers you four handy motivational quotes for when the going gets tough during your PhD…

“Success requires Action”

We all procrastinate. It’s something that is easy to do especially at the beginning of your PhD when it feels like you have a lot of time. But to be successful—by this I mean successfully finishing and submitting your thesis—it’s not enough to say that you want a PhD, you also have to do the work. Doing the work means sitting down at your desk, butt firmly stuck to chair, and just doing it. It helps to set yourself concrete goals like writing 500 words a day, and trying your best to meet that target every day.

“Progress, not Perfection”

Perfectionism often gets confused with having high standards. For me, this has meant that I’d revised a chapter countless times before sending it to my supervisors for feedback because I felt that it just wasn’t right. But here’s the problem: the “right” version doesn’t exist. It’s an illusion—painfully shattered when you get back said chapter with lots of critical comments from your supervisor. Conversely, something that you think is “average” might actually be good enough for your supervisor. It’s good to have high standards, but don’t kill yourself over them. “Good enough” tends to be good enough. Check out Petra Kolber’s TED talk titled “The Perfection Detox” for some sharp insights into the perils of perfectionism.

“Eat the Elephant one bite at a time”

I don’t remember where I heard this quote. But it came handy in the late stages of my PhD when I felt tired and frustrated that no matter how much and how fast I was writing and revising, there still seemed to be no end in sight. Finishing a thesis can feel like having a huge elephant in front of you that you’re supposed to eat in its entirety. Of course, if you mainly focus on how massive this elephant is and when you can finish eating it up, you will feel overwhelmed. But if you take the elephant bite by bite, and not think about how much of it is left, one day the elephant will be all gone. The same goes for your thesis: break it down to small actionable tasks and do one task after another, until it is done and ready for submission.

“Enjoy Climbing the Mountain”

Doing a PhD is extremely challenging work. While we do it for the intellectual stimulation, sometimes we might wonder: why do we put ourselves through such difficulty? If you need a reminder of why you have chosen to do this, here is a quote by Tadashi Yanai , the founder of Uniqlo, which I have found helpful: “I’m never really satisfied with anything because the world is ever-changing. If you keep climbing up, then you see another, higher mountain. You climb up that peak and see another. I will pass away eventually because that is life. But I am climbing mountains because I enjoy the process of climbing a mountain.”

Whenever I feel like want to give up on my PhD, I always remember one beautiful quotes from Alex Wassabi that he mentioned in one of his vlog. His quote sounds like this: ” We know what will happen if we give up, but we don’t know what will happen if we don’t”.

Excellent, motivational!

Inspiring Quotes for Stress Management in PhD Studies

Inspiring Quotes for Stress Management in PhD Studies

Stress Management for PhD Students: Finding Inner Peace Through Inspiring Quotes

Pursuing a PhD is no easy feat. It requires a significant amount of time, effort, and dedication. Along with the challenges of coursework and research, PhD students often experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and burnout. However, stress is not an inevitable part of the PhD journey, and it is possible to manage it effectively with the right tools and techniques. In this post, we’ll explore some inspiring quotes that can help PhD students to cope with stress and find inner peace.

  • “The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” – William James
“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” William James

One of the most important aspects of stress management is learning to control our thoughts and emotions. We can’t always control the circumstances that cause stress, but we can choose how we react to them. This quote by psychologist William James emphasizes the power of choice and the importance of taking control of our thoughts. When we find ourselves becoming overwhelmed with stress, it can be helpful to pause, take a deep breath, and choose to focus on positive thoughts instead.

  • “Stress is an ignorant state. It believes that everything is an emergency.” – Natalie Goldberg
“Stress is an ignorant state. It believes that everything is an emergency.” Natalie Goldberg

Stress often arises from a sense of urgency and a feeling that we must constantly be doing something. However, this perspective is not accurate or helpful. Stress is often a result of our own thoughts and beliefs, and it’s important to recognize that not everything is an emergency. This quote by Natalie Goldberg highlights the ignorance of stress and reminds us to step back and evaluate our thoughts and priorities.

  • “It’s not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it.” – Hans Selye
“It’s not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it.” Hans Selye

Stress can be harmful to our health, but it is not the stress itself that causes harm. Rather, it’s our reactions to stress that can lead to physical and emotional health problems. This quote by Hans Selye, the father of stress research, reminds us that we have the power to control our reactions to stress. By developing healthy coping mechanisms, we can minimize the harmful effects of stress on our well-being.

  • “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” – Nelson Mandela

PhD students often experience setbacks and failures during their journey. However, it’s important to remember that these challenges are not permanent and that they can be overcome. This quote by Nelson Mandela highlights the importance of resilience and the ability to bounce back from adversity. When faced with stress or difficult challenges, PhD students can remind themselves of their strength and resilience, and use it as motivation to keep moving forward.

  • “Peace is not the absence of conflict, but the ability to cope with it.” – Unknown

Stress is a natural part of life, and it’s important to understand that it is not possible to eliminate it completely. However, what we can do is develop the ability to cope with it effectively. 25 of the Best Motivational Quotes from Scientists

We’ve been posting motivational science quotes every Monday for a couple of years now. Why do we do it, you ask? Because we love digging into the wisdom of scientists past and present, reminding ourselves why the work we do is so important. And we love being able to pass on these little nuggets of optimism and motivation as we find them.

When we interview scientists for our blog , as well as asking them for their favorite science jokes , as we also ask what their favorite science quotes are.

We’ve had so many brilliant ones shared with us, so we wanted to collect our top 25 into one great big inspirational blog for you. Bookmark this page for whenever you feel like life in the lab is getting you down.

1. “Everything is theoretically impossible, until it is done.” – Robert A. Heinlein.

“Although from a sci-fi book, I think it captures the spirit of the scientific frontier,” says Martyn Webb , who’s studying for his PhD at the University of East Anglia.

2. “The reward of the young scientist is the emotional thrill of being the first person in the history of the world to see something or to understand something. Nothing can compare with that experience.” – Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin

We’re sure every passionate early career researcher will agree! Thank you Dr Deborah Kronenberg-Versteeg from the University of Cambridge for sharing this beautiful quote from the British-born American astronomer and astrophysicist (who proposed in her 1925 doctoral thesis that stars were composed primarily of hydrogen and helium).

3. “What you learn from a life in science is the vastness of our ignorance.” – David Eagleman

Next time you feel pressure to know everything, remember this quote that Dr Laura Boddington shared with us. Knowing everything is impossible, don’t let imposter syndrome take hold!

4. "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants." – Issac Newton

Kate Manley , part of the Prostate Cancer Genetics Team at the University of East Anglia, reminds us of the importance of acknowledging all the scientists whose discoveries have made our current work possible.

5. “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” – Albert Einstein

Thanks to James Cleland , PhD Fellow at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, for making this our favourite retort to: “Are you going to clean that up?”

6. "Our virtues and our failures are inseparable, like force and matter. When they separate, man is no more.” – Nikola Tesla

It’s important to remember that failure is not only an inevitable part of life, it’s an inevitable part of success. Thank you Lab Heroes Runner-Up Elisabeth Paul , soon-to-be PhD Student at Linköping University, for sharing this.

24. “We cannot solve problems with the same thinking we used to create them.” – Albert Einstein

Yep, this is our third Einstein quote of the article. But you can’t deny the guy knew what he was talking about! This quote shared by our Head of Chemistry Dr Richard Patterson reminds us of the importance of thinking outside of the box.

25. “I am among those who think that science has great beauty.” – Marie Curie

What better sentiment to end on than this? This is one is our Director of Marketing Dr Sam Roome ’s favorite quote. Because science is sometimes hard, and messy, and complicated, and frustrating… but at its core, it’s absolutely beautiful.

quotes on phd life

Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts.

I would rather have questions that can't be answered than answers that can't be questioned.

If you can't explain something to a first year student, then you haven't really understood .

The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool.

Fall in love with some activity, and do it! Nobody ever figures out what life is all about, and it doesn't matter. Explore the world. Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough. Work as hard and as much as you want to on the things you like to do the best. Don't think about what you want to be, but what you want to do. Keep up some kind of a minimum with other things so that society doesn't stop you from doing anything at all.

Religion is a culture of faith; science is a culture of doubt.

Don't pay attention to "authorities," think for yourself.

Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.

We never are definitely right, we can only be sure we are wrong.

You can always recognize truth by its beauty and simplicity.

If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don't understand quantum mechanics.

We need to teach how doubt is not to be feared but welcomed. It's OK to say, "I don't know."

You can know the name of a bird in all the languages of the world, but when you're finished, you'll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird... So let's look at the bird and see what it's doing -- that's what counts.

Looking back at the worst times, it always seems that they were times in which there were people who believed with absolute faith and absolute dogmatism in something. And they were so serious in this matter that they insisted that the rest of the world agree with them. And then they would do things that were directly inconsistent with their own beliefs in order to maintain that what they said was true.

I'm smart enough to know that I'm dumb.

I, a universe of atoms, an atom in the universe.

Nobody ever figures out what life is all about, and it doesn't matter. Explore the world. Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough.

First you guess. Don't laugh, this is the most important step. Then you compute the consequences. Compare the consequences to experience. If it disagrees with experience, the guess is wrong. In that simple statement is the key to science. It doesn't matter how beautiful your guess is or how smart you are or what your name is. If it disagrees with experience, it's wrong. That's all there is to it.

If you thought that science was certain - well, that is just an error on your part.

You do not know anything until you have practiced.

When a scientist doesn't know the answer to a problem, he is ignorant. When he has a hunch as to what the result is, he is uncertain. And when he is pretty darn sure of what the result is going to be, he is still in some doubt. We have found it of paramount importance that in order to progress we must recognize our ignorance and leave room for doubt. Scientific knowledge is a body of statements of varying degrees of certainty - some most unsure, some nearly sure, but none absolutely certain.

The "paradox" is only a conflict between reality and your feeling of what reality "ought to be."

To develop working ideas efficiently, I try to fail as fast as I can.

You have no responsibility to live up to what other people think you ought to accomplish. I have no responsibility to be like they expect me to be. It's their mistake, not my failing.

It’s important to compare car insurance quotes from multiple companies when shopping for a new policy. Our research can help you know what to look for. Start with free car insurance quotes for your area.

What Do I Need To Get Car Insurance Quotes?

Company reviews, compare companies, key takeaways.

  • Many car insurance companies offer free online quotes.
  • Comparing quotes can give you confidence that you’re getting a competitive rate.
  • Most companies offer discounts that can help you save on car insurance.

How To Get Car Insurance Quotes

1. decide on the coverage you need.

Most states require drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability coverage, and a minimum-coverage policy is, on average, the cheapest type of plan you can purchase. But there are other things to keep in mind as you’re shopping for car insurance.

For instance, if your vehicle is newer or leased, you may be required by a lender or lessor to carry additional coverages, such as comprehensive and collision coverage . And as your vehicle ages, you may determine that different coverages and coverage amounts are a better fit than those you carried when it was newer.

2. View rate comparisons

Our rating of the Cheapest Car Insurance Companies can give you an idea of which insurers offer the lowest rates overall and for specific driver groups, such as teen drivers and senior drivers.

Different insurers may also offer different rates according to your driving record, the number of miles you drive in a year, or the level of coverage you’re seeking, among other considerations.

USAA has the cheapest rates in most categories we analyzed, but its policies are only available to current and former members of the military and their families. Erie, Auto-Owners, and Nationwide also offer rates well below the national average in many driver categories. But the best insurance provider for you might be another company in our rating, or one that’s not in our rating.

3. Learn more about individual insurers

Our reviews of individual car insurance companies include analysis of rates to give you a general feel for pricing. They also use results from our survey of consumers to help gauge the companies’ reputations for customer service, claims handling, customer loyalty, and other key considerations.

Our rating of the Best Car Insurance Companies is a good starting point for learning more about some of the nation’s top auto insurers.

4. Compare quotes

Once you’ve determined the coverages you need and spent some time researching insurance companies, you’ll be prepared to compare quotes and find the policy that’s right for you. Remember to compare quotes for the same types and levels of coverage to give yourself an accurate comparison.

Be prepared to provide some basic information about yourself, such as age, gender, and marital status, and also information about your vehicle. You’ll also be asked about your current insurance status, if applicable, and will need to provide some information related to your driving history.

Most insurers offer the option of obtaining free quotes through their websites. There are also comparison sites that allow you to obtain and compare quotes from multiple insurers at once.

For more on shopping for insurance, including the pros and cons of shopping online or working with an agent, read our How to Buy Car Insurance guide.

Compare Car Insurance Quotes

Get free personalized quotes with one simple form.

Whether shopping for a car insurance quote online or working with an agent, you’ll need to provide some basic information as part of the process. This allows the quote to be tailored to your specific situation. It can also help give you an idea of any discounts you’re qualified for. Discounts can vary by insurer.

Some of the information you can expect to be asked for includes:

Your location.

Your age and the age of other drivers on the policy., information about your vehicles., your current insurance status., information related to driving history., other information., find the right insurance for you, cheapest car insurance companies, the best car insurance companies, how much car insurance do i need, how does car insurance work.

Price isn’t the only factor to consider when choosing a car insurance company. A cut-rate car insurance company isn't a good choice if it doesn't offer the coverages you’re looking for. And the most expensive company isn't always better than one that's cheaper. Check out our car insurance ratings to find the best car insurance companies and compare costs. Then, drill down into our car insurance company reviews to learn more about each insurer, including their reputations for things like customer service, claims handling, and customer loyalty.

What Factors Determine Car Insurance Rates?

Driving history.

Drivers with a clean record will pay considerably less on average than those who have one or more moving violations or accidents on their record. A person with multiple violations or accidents may be classified as a high-risk driver , have their driving privileges suspended or revoked, or be dropped by their insurer.

High-risk drivers also may be required to file an SR-22 certificate .

*Annual rate

Age and gender

Generally speaking, car insurance rates become cheaper as you get older, the logic being that more experienced drivers are safer drivers. Senior citizens (defined here as married 60-year-olds) pay the least, on average, for coverage, while teenagers (defined as 17-year-olds) pay the most.

Men often pay more for car insurance than women do, especially teens and men in their mid-20s, but not always. Some states prohibit companies from considering gender when setting car insurance rates: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

Average annual cost of car insurance by age and gender

Coverage type

The deductible chosen will also factor into the policy’s cost, as will the level of coverage. Minimum coverage – the base amount of liability insurance and other coverage required to operate a vehicle in your state – costs less than a policy with higher coverage levels.

You might be surprised to learn that collision coverage doesn't cover every type of collision you may have or that comprehensive coverage isn't as comprehensive as you might think. If you're looking for a specific type of car insurance coverage, you need to make sure it's included in any car insurance rate quote you get.

We've created guides on different types of car insurance so you can understand and decide which car insurance policies make the most sense for you.

Credit history

Your credit-based insurance score – which is not the same as the credit score that lenders use for car loans and the like – can also influence how much you pay for car insurance in most states. Factors include whether or not you pay your bills on time, how much debt you have, the types of credit you’ve accessed (a car loan versus a credit card, for example), and the like.

This score is used by underwriters to determine the likelihood of your filing a claim. The more financially responsible you are, the less likely you are to file a claim, according to research cited by the Insurance Information Institute . Some states prohibit the use of credit-based information in determining car insurance rates.

Our analysis of car insurance rates found that on average, drivers with poor credit paid $4,381 per year for car insurance. That’s more than double the national average rate we found for drivers with good credit: $2,095 annually.

What Discounts Do Car Insurance Companies Offer?

Car insurance providers offer a broad array of discounts that can vary by company. Many of the insurers in our rating of the Best Car Insurance Companies offer safe driver discounts that reward motorists for maintaining a clean driving record. It’s also common for insurers to offer discounts for paying your annual premium in full , rather than monthly, or for student drivers who get good grades.

Other types of discounts offered by car insurance companies include:

• Anti-theft device discount • Paperless discount • Discount for insuring multiple vehicles

• Military discount • Alternative fuel vehicle discount • Automatic payments discount

Many insurers also offer bundling discounts that give you a price break for purchasing multiple types of policies – for instance, home and auto insurance policies. To learn more about saving with this particular combination, see our rating of the Best Home and Auto Insurance Bundles and research individual insurers to discover additional bundling opportunities.

How to Get the Cheapest Car Insurance Quotes

A number of factors influence what you pay for car insurance. These include the insurer you choose, discounts that may be available, and your driving record, among other things. Here are a few ways to help save on car insurance:

Shop around and compare quotes

Different insurers can charge widely varying rates for car insurance. Obtaining and comparing quotes from multiple insurers can help you find the lowest possible premium.

Research possible discounts

Auto insurers often offer discounts, but some offer more discounts than others, and the types of discounts offered can vary by insurer. But you can save 5% to 15% or more on your annual rate by taking advantage of common savings offers such as for bundling your home and auto policies. When searching for coverage, ask about available discounts and find out if you or other drivers covered by your policy – such as a spouse or child – are eligible.

Keep a clean driving record

A traffic infraction like a speeding ticket or DUI can cause you to pay more for car insurance. Motorists with clean driving records can generally expect to pay less.

Consider a higher deductible

You’ll typically pay less for a policy with a high deductible than you would with a lower one. But keep in mind that with a high deductible, you’ll pay more out of pocket when filing a claim.

Maintain good credit

Generally, drivers with good credit pay less for car insurance than those with poor credit. It’s worth noting, however, that some states restrict the use of credit-related information in setting car insurance rates.

How Do Those Car Insurance Tracking Devices Work?

Most insurers offer free car insurance quotes on their websites, and there are many online comparison sites that allow you to compare quotes from multiple companies.

If you don’t want to obtain quotes online, you can contact agents with specific companies, sometimes called captive agents, or agents that represent multiple insurers, called independent agents. An insurance broker can also offer you quotes for comparison, but you still have to work with an insurer directly to purchase a policy. The broker may also charge a fee for their services.

The Insurance Information Institute (III) recommends that you get quotes from at least three insurers to find a policy that meets your coverage needs and suits your budget. One important thing to keep in mind as your search gets underway: Be sure you’re comparing quotes for the same types and amounts of coverage so you get an accurate comparison.

For more help finding the best car insurance, visit our How Does Car Insurance Work ? Guide.

Our report on the cheapest car insurance companies found that USAA has the lowest annual rates, on average, among companies we analyzed. According to our research, the sample cost for a USAA policy is $1,335 per year, which is $733 lower than the national average rate.

USAA only sells car insurance policies to the military community, so many drivers may find the cheapest rate with Erie or Auto-Owners. Erie’s sample cost of $1,532 per year was second-lowest among companies in our analysis, and Auto-Owners had the third-lowest average annual rate at $1,619 per year. Nationwide, with a sample annual premium of $1,621, also has some of the lowest rates among companies in our report.

Our rating of the Best Car Insurance Companies included survey responses from more than 4,200 consumers. USAA is No. 1 in our rating and Auto-Owners is No. 2. USAA and Auto-Owners have some of the lowest average rates in our analysis, and both performed well in subcategories such as customer service, claims handling, and customer loyalty. They also had high scores for policy discounts.

USAA’s membership is limited to the military community, so for most people the best car insurance company may be Auto-Owners, which sells car insurance in 26 states. Other insurers near the top of our rating include Nationwide at No. 3 and State Farm at No. 4.

A car dealership will usually want to verify insurance coverage before you drive a vehicle off the lot. And though you may be able to purchase a vehicle from a private individual without proof of insurance, driving it without insurance is likely illegal. Almost all states require motorists to carry a minimum amount of liability coverage.

You also put yourself at risk financially if you drive uninsured. And if you are financing your purchase or signing a new lease, the lender or lessor will likely have insurance requirements.

As with any insurance purchase, you can benefit from obtaining quotes to find the best rate. Shopping around will require you to round up some information about your new vehicle, such as its make and model, its age, its vehicle identification number (VIN), and its mileage, among other things.

USAA was No. 1 in our rating for claims handling with a score of 4.9 out of 5, and Auto-Owners was No. 2 with a score of 4.8. In our survey of consumers, more than 65% of respondents said they were completely satisfied with the ease of filing a claim with USAA, and more than 67% were completely satisfied with how their claim was resolved. Forty-four percent of Auto-Owners policyholders in our survey said they were completely satisfied with the ease of filing a claim with the company, while 61% were completely satisfied with how their claim was resolved.

American Family is No. 3 in our rating for claims handling, while Nationwide and State Farm are tied at No. 4.

Students walk into Barton Hall for the 2024 Ph.D. Recognition Ceremony.

Ph.D. graduates carved their own paths

By katya hrichak graduate school.

Cornell’s newest doctoral graduates have already begun paving the way for new discoveries, President Martha E. Pollack said to more than 300 students waiting to cross the stage at the 2024 Ph.D. Recognition Ceremony on May 24 at Barton Hall.

“The knowledge brought to light by your research, and shared with the world through your dissertation, is now your own contribution to the edifice of human knowledge,” she said. “Just as your research built on the knowledge discovered and created by others, so will those who come after you, build on yours.”

A newly recognized Ph.D. recipient embraces family after the ceremony.

Each doctoral student accepted a certificate from Kathryn J. Boor ’80, dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for graduate education, or Provost Michael I. Kotlikoff as they crossed the stage.

“You have reached the pinnacle of knowledge or expertise within your specific focus in your field, and your Ph.D. serves as a recognition of your deep commitment and drive to discover new knowledge,” Kotlikoff said.

This year, the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly revived the tradition of a faculty speaker; the speaker, Praveen Sethupathy, professor and chair in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine, told the students that the process of pursuing a Ph.D. looked different for every one of them.

“No two academic journeys are the same,” he said. “Confidently carve your own path. It’s tempting to compare yourself with colleagues. But you are not them. You are someone with a unique set of skills, talents, values and experiences that have shaped your interests and goals. Find the people who will support you, empower you and persevere.”

New graduates recognized those who were part of their networks while at Cornell and how integral their presence was to degree completion. Fangyu Wang, Ph.D. ’24, a biochemistry, molecular and cell biology graduate, expressed gratitude for her mentor, lab members and friends.

“Earning a Ph.D. means not only have I experienced academic growth, but also personally I feel like I’ve become a new person,” she said. “I’ve gained so much knowledge.”

“Doing a Ph.D. is not just you, it’s all the people around you and all the people that support you,” said genetics, genomics and development graduate Brian Aguilera, Ph.D. ’24. “It’s a marathon, and you need people to keep you going. I’m really grateful for that.”

The journey to a Ph.D. was meaningful for Aguilera as an individual, he said, but also honored those who encouraged him along the way.

“My grandparents didn’t finish high school, so for my family it’s a huge deal for me to be able to do what I love and keep on learning,” he said. “They support me and they’re really proud of this huge accomplishment. It’s not just for me, but for all of the generations behind me.”

A day in the life of a PhD student…

View of Princes Street. A train in the foreground and the Scott monument in the background.

…by Nitara / from London, UK / studying Biological Sciences (PhD)

A realistic day in my life: my routine varies but a random day in March looked like this…

Today, I woke up at 9am-ish (later than usual, I promise) so I rushed in, grabbing a coffee and blueberry muffin on my way. I had to stop to take in the view.

Arrive at uni

Being part of the School of Biological Sciences, my desk is in Ashworth Laboratories in King’s Buildings. I spend 20 minutes catching up with friends in the common room and making my second coffee of the day to prepare myself to debug the code I’ve been working on.

I put my headphones on- starting off with Work Out by J Cole usually gets me hyped up. Right now, I’m working on simulating disease spread through animal social networks but have been stuck on a code issue. With quite a bit of reading and help from my supervisor, I solve the bug! Onto the next hurdle..

Laptop connected to an external display and keyboard

Journal club

I take a break and go to WEG (Wild Evolution Group), a journal club where we share research and discuss papers. It’s really cool to be able to learn and chat about science with experts in the field in a relaxed and open environment. I often feel imposter syndrome but everyone is friendly and encourages students and staff of all levels to get involved.

I realise I forgot my lunch during my morning rush so I head to the Nucleus canteen and grab a vegan jerk hotdog with extra crispy onions on top- yum. It’s a sunny day so I eat outside.

Afternoon Hustle

In the afternoon, I have an online training course on Data Analysis in Python. I usually code in R but am trying to learn Python too so join the call from the comfort of my desk. After, I read a couple of new papers and prepare for a meeting I have next week. I make a to-do list for all the tasks I want to get done tomorrow.

Before I leave, I go for a meet up with BioPod, a science podcast society based at the university and we talk about potential episode ideas and I sign up to do some editing for a recently recorded interview.

I head home and get ready for my tuition class. To save for summer travels, I tutor on the side and today I have an hour of A/L biology class. I spend the rest of the evening baking! My first attempt at cinnamon buns are quite successful and I cover up any burnt bits with lots of icing. I made dhal, jackfruit curry and rice for dinner and switch on an episode of the new season of Drive to Survive on netflix.

Last minute plans

As I’m tucking into my after-dinner iced bun, a friend rings and says there’s a gig on at Stramash that looks good. Since it’s been a long week and I feel quite happy with the work I’ve got done, I decide to join. The band is doing reggae covers and I enjoy the atmosphere and music.

I get back and get ready for bed. I try to end the day by reading so I make a chamomile tea and curl up with a new book called ‘Hood Feminism’. I set my alarm for earlier and switch off the lights, looking forward to tomorrow!

When the PhD path leads to career struggles

A bird flew past a rainbow on the horizon, as viewed from Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester.

A doctoral degree is a major commitment. Think carefully.

I appreciated reading Kara Miller’s The Big Idea column “PhD: Pretty heavily disappointed” (Business, May 22), about people with doctoral degrees struggling to build careers in academia. It made me think back to a conversation I had when I was about to graduate from high school.

I happened to run into a former track coach of mine, and as we were reminiscing he asked me what I planned as a major in college. “History,” I responded. He said, “Why don’t you take some computer classes also? It never hurts to be able to do something useful.”

I did not reflect on his motivation at the time, but my track coach was a young guy, and he was probably giving me advice straight from his own life, as a parent trying to raise his own young children. I did take computer classes in college and ultimately received a PhD in chemical engineering. I always remember that conversation as being a kind of turning point.

Earning a doctoral degree is a life commitment of great proportion. It can take, as Miller notes, between four and seven years. If we think of working life as roughly between the ages of 22 and 65, then a PhD requires more than 10 percent of a person’s working life. People need to think carefully about that investment.

Two powerful arguments in favor of the path of science, technology, engineering, and math are that there tend to be more STEM jobs for PhDs, and many universities’ STEM departments are generous in covering their PhD students’ tuition and cost of studies, including a stipend toward food, rent, and other expenses.

Not much has changed in 30 years

As I prepared to graduate in 1995 with a doctor of education degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, my mother memorably said to me, “Of my four children, you are the one with the most education and the smallest salary.” Apparently not much has changed in 30 years.

I must congratulate these students, however, on following their passion rather than following the money. I can’t help but think that their lives, though stressful, may contain greater happiness.

Lawyers & electricians & philosophers, oh my!

Kara Miller’s column on the career challenges for people with doctoral degrees generated more than 260 comments on Boston.Globe.com. The following is an edited sample of readers’ reactions:

Lots of law school grads are underemployed as well. (PL)

So true, PL. The market in Massachusetts is flooded with talented lawyers seeking work. (Roforma)

Supply and demand, the market at work. (guk)

Investing in education and research in all fields is the hallmark of a society with staying power. Disinvesting from these endeavors signals decline and decay. (Massachusetts citizen)

Electricians, plumbers, mechanics, and other skilled technical professions have no problems getting $100k jobs with great benefits. (ramsen)

Not enough turnover from tenured professors, leaving little space for new faculty. Although the tenured, well-established professors are needed, it’s the junior faculty who are hungry and with new ideas that help build new programs. The whole graduate program model is a bad model. I worked two jobs, had my tuition and some type of minimal student health insurance and could barely cover the rent with my stipend, and the second job paid for everything else. Though I was working on many faculty projects, it was the faculty who said this would be good for me. Never did they say it was also good for them. (TravelerofNJ2)

I just retired from a tenured faculty position in science. I’m in my early 70s. I have colleagues who are still doing what they do well into their 70s, a couple approaching 80. There is no active incentive from the university to move the older faculty on, to make way for a new generation. (Lola-lola)

The next step is for adjuncts to go on strike across the nation and hold colleges and universities accountable. The current system is completely absurd. (Wordsmith2358)

Universities should be required to release disclosure data about the fate of their PhD graduates. (davidman820)

I knew an attorney who managed a Cheesecake Factory. She had worked in food services through school. As an attorney, she really did not make that much money and was not doing the field of law of her choice. How many real estate closings can you do without dying of boredom? She went into management in the food industry and makes the same salary. (Antietem)

It was always a question and puzzling to me why people study philosophy. (Blazer27)
