Ph.D. student earns Department of Defense scholarship

Portrait of Nolan Gutierrez

Nolan Gutierrez, a doctoral student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, has received a prestigious Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) scholarship from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

“This scholarship will help me pursue a more permanent career within the Department of Defense,” Gutierrez said. “I hope to work with my mentor and their team at the Army Research Lab to delve deeper into my research and propose my own projects that align with their research goals.”

Gutierrez will use the scholarship to build upon research he started last year during an internship with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, or DEVCOM, in the Army Research Lab. Specifically, he will focus on enhancing the adaptability of pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras through multitask learning.

He will see if training a PTZ control system on a variety of motion profiles—such as square, circular, and straight-line movements, both forward and backward—will improve its adaptability and performance. This approach includes deploying a PTZ-equipped robot in scenarios that mimic real-world operational conditions relevant to the Army.

Gutierrez works with UTA computer science Assistant Professor William Beksi in the Robotic Vision Lab. He is Beksi’s second student in as many years to earn a SMART scholarship, following Minh (Jerry) Tram in 2023.

“Not only does Nolan's SMART scholarship strengthen the ties between the DEVCOM Amy Research Lab and UTA, but it also shows UTA's commitment to train and provide the DoD with STEM Ph.D. graduates,” Beksi said.

SMART scholarship recipients earn full tuition, a significant annual stipend and a book and health allowance. They also complete a summer internship at a DoD facility and are assigned an experienced mentor. The full scholarship and other benefits allow participants to focus on complex research to further the DoD’s mission and create a lasting impact. The program is a one-for-one commitment: For every year of degree funding, the recipient commits to working for a year with the DoD as a civilian employee.

Class of 2024: Top veterinary graduate Alexandra Reddy finds unexpected path to pathology studies

  • Kevin Myatt

  • Copy address link to clipboard

Headshot of Alexandra Reddy.

Name: Alexandra Reddy

College: Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine

Degree: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Hometown: Halifax, Virginia

Plans after graduation: Reddy will be staying at the veterinary college for a five-year pathology residency and pursuing a Ph.D. She hopes to work in academia beyond that.

Why I’m a Hokie: “I was born and raised in Virginia. Virginia will always have my heart. So in that sense, Virginia Tech was where I wanted to come for veterinary school. But another thing that really attracted me about Virginia Tech, specifically, is our public corporate track because I knew I had nontraditional interests. And so it was important to me to go to a school that would support that.”

Most difficult part of veterinary studies: “I am a very big family person and an academic person. So for me, the most challenging thing was making sure that I didn't compromise either of those values that are important to me. And thankfully, with that being said, I'm blessed with the most incredible family and friends, and my boyfriend. I've had incredible support from everyone that helped me achieve that balance.

The journey to veterinary college

Sometimes the back door leads to the top of the class.

“I did not grow up wanting to be a veterinarian,” Reddy said. “I was not the classic student that knew since I was in existence that I wanted to be a veterinarian.”

Reddy is the valedictorian for the Class of 2024 of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and the recipient of the Richard B. Talbot Award scholarship, given each year to the veterinary college graduate with the highest GPA.

Reddy found her way to the veterinary college through science coursework at Galileo Magnet High School in Danville and undergraduate studies in zoology and pre-medicine at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

“During my first year through my environmental science classes, I realized I love learning about these issues because I want to help the animals that they impact, not because I love soil biology or water chemistry or things like that,” Reddy said.

Reddy said her prior frame of reference for veterinary medicine had been the clinics in her native Southside Virginia that treated pets or livestock.

“I didn't see myself in general practice,” Reddy said. “While at Liberty University, I became involved in scientific research and fell in love with it. So I googled 'veterinary scientist' one day and stumbled upon a veterinary research program at Purdue's College of Veterinary Medicine. I was accepted and matched into a veterinary pathology laboratory. Through this program, I realized the breadth of veterinarians, specifically veterinary pathologists, and I fell in love. Then I decided to apply to veterinary school.”

Pathology in practice

Reddy finished her fourth-year externships with a pathology rotation at the Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium this spring. She served previous pathology rotations at the Zoological Pathology Program at the Brookfield Zoo Chicago, Stanford University, and Johns Hopkins University.

She also deeply enjoyed caring for the animals at SeaQuest Lynchburg , an aquarium and zoo in Lynchburg’s River Ridge Mall that inspired her during her undergraduate studies.

“She has excelled in my exotic elective courses and displayed the best qualities of our veterinary students in an externship at SeaQuest Aquarium,” said Stephen A. Smith, professor of aquatic medicine, fish health, wildlife and exotic animal medicine. “Alex is one of those special students who you realize is just starting to reach her potential in the veterinary profession.”

"High standards for myself"

Kevin Lahmers, clinical professor of anatomic pathology, said Reddy possesses qualities that make her unique even among her class of exceptionally intelligent peers.

“In addition to her book smarts, Alex is personable and willing to work toward the goals she sets,” Lahmers said. “She has enthusiastically pursued her chosen area of specialization and has already demonstrated skills and knowledge that frequently take several years to acquire, if at all.“

Reddy may have come in the back door to her veterinary pathology interests, but it was still a steep climb up the stairs to achieve the top GPA, which, again, was not one of her initial goals.

“That was not something that I set out to achieve coming into veterinary school,” Reddy said. “I've always had high standards for myself. And I always want to know that I gave my best. Coming into veterinary school, I knew that it was going to be the most challenging academic program I would ever undertake. And as long as I gave my best, and learned to take care of my patients, for myself that's what matters.”

WNY Medical Scholarships give two Jacobs School grads more reason to celebrate

Published May 3, 2024

Surviving the rigors of four years of medical school is no small feat. So when members of the Class of 2024 attended last week’s commencement ceremonies for the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, they were more than ready to celebrate.

This year, two Jacobs School grads have even more reason to celebrate: Jessica Grace Flores and Paige Guy recently learned they are both recipients of a Western New York Medical Scholarship of $120,000 each.

The scholarship will cut their medical school debt roughly in half.

The WNY Medical Scholarship program is a family of scholarships that was initiated by Jacobs School alumni and local business and community leaders in order to tackle two goals: the shortage of physicians in Western New York, especially in underserved areas, and medical student debt.

Since 2012, the Western New York Medical Scholarship Fund, an independent, grassroots, community organization, has been providing scholarships to Western New York students who attend the Jacobs School and then pledge to stay and practice medicine here for five years after completing their training.

Flores is a recipient of the Jonathan D. Daniels, MD ’98 & Family Memorial Scholarship ; Guy is a recipient of the Catholic Health System scholarship.

A California native, Flores became familiar with Buffalo after meeting her fiancé, whose roots are in upstate New York. She happened to be visiting downtown Buffalo when the newly constructed medical school caught her eye.

“I could see myself studying there,” she recalls, noting the large, bright windows overlooking Main Street. Once she started the interview process, she became even more interested.

“The people were so kind,” she says. When she toured the school during the interview process, her tour guide happened to be the late Jonathan Daniels, for whom her scholarship is named.

“He took us into a room where a student happened to be studying,” Flores says. “Dr. Daniels knew who he was and started talking to him, and I thought, ‘OK, he cares.’ I thought, ‘they value people here, more than just brains.’”

Coming from a family where she was the first to attend graduate school, Flores says it was impossible to fully comprehend the amount of money that medical school costs. “It’s like play money; I can’t even fathom it,” she says.

‘The hugest thing’

So for Flores, getting this scholarship is “the hugest thing.” This summer, she begins residency in pediatrics at UB and at the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital.

“This scholarship is an opportunity for me to focus on what I want to do,” she says. “I don’t have to specialize. It’s liberating.”

Guy, a native of Lockport, always knew she wanted to go into health care. “But I thought being a doctor was way out of reach,” she says.

She started out at SUNY Niagara (formerly Niagara County Community College)   and quickly fell in love with medicine. She enrolled at UB, majoring in biomedical sciences. The idea of trying to become a physician began to seem possible.

After graduating, she spent a year doing research in a UB lab. She met the man who would become her husband. Coincidentally, he was already a Jacobs School student. A native of New York City, he assumed he would return to his hometown for residency, but once Guy was accepted to the Jacobs School, he reconsidered.

Now, both of them will be practicing medicine in Buffalo. “I never really wanted to go anywhere else,” says Guy, who will be starting her internal medicine residency at UB.

And staying local has had multiple advantages, especially when they decided to start a family while Guy was in medical school. They are the proud parents of a toddler and a 5-month-old, both of whom will attend commencement when their mother graduates.

‘Live here. Train here. Remain here’

Both Flores and Guy demonstrate exactly what the Western New York Medical Scholarship is seeking to promote. “Our motto is simple: Live here, train here, remain here,” says John Bodkin, a Jacobs School alumnus who has led the charge to get more Jacobs School graduates to stay and practice here.

Bodkin, who was president of Highgate Medical and a family physician with the practice for 40 years, and other alumni and business leaders have raised more than $4 million from private donors, health systems, corporations and foundations.

The fund has provided scholarships to more than 44 Jacobs School medical students, many of whom will practice primary care in underserved areas, where the shortages are most severe.

“Our focus is debt reduction, so that students can afford to practice in underserved areas,” says Bodkin.

The scholarships are responding to a key factor driving physician shortages: Surveys of medical students indicate the debt students take on to go to medical school drives the subsequent area of specialty. In addition, an aging population of doctors and higher salaries in bigger cities can also create shortages in places like Buffalo. Over the past 10 years, statewide estimates have put Western New York among the regions in the state with some of the lowest numbers of physicians per 100,000 residents.
