Movie Review: Game (2011)
Buy the DVD at Amazon Buy the soundtrack at Amazon
The murder mystery genre is a well-established one — so much so that audiences have internalized the genre’s rules, whether consciously or not. Game breaks a number of rules that the genre demands must be followed, ruining what is otherwise a great-looking and well-acted movie.
Game starts with a promising contrivance. Billionaire Kabir Malhotra (Anupam Kher) summons four people to his private Greek island right at the moment they are most in need of rescue. Tisha (Shahana Goswami) is caught driving drunk, O.P. (Boman Irani) is about to lose his political career, Neil (Abhishek Bachchan) is on the run from Colombian drug dealers, and Vikram (Jimmy Shergill) has a suitcase with a dead body stuffed inside.
Malhotra’s generous offer isn’t quite what it seems. He holds the three men responsible for the untimely death of a daughter he never knew he had. And Tisha is his dead daughter Maya’s fraternal twin sister. Malhotra has enough dirt on the men to ruin their lives, dirt which he plans to turn over to international authorities in the morning.
The circumstances of Maya’s death are divulged within the first 30 minutes of a 135 minute movie, so that’s clearly not the movie’s real mystery. Instead of moving the story forward from that point, the plot is interrupted by Neil flashing back to Maya (Sarah-Jane Dias) performing a burlesque dance number, ruining the flow of the film.
At the fifty minute mark, the true mystery is finally revealed. Malhotra dies alone in his office — presumably by his own hand — and all of his evidence on the men is destroyed. The international authorities arrive, but lead inspector Sia (Kangana Ranaut) is forced to let the four invitees go home. Her primary suspect, for no apparent reason, is Neil, and she begins trailing him to uncover his guilt.
There’s a lot to like about Game . Bachchan and Ranaut are compelling leads, and veterans Kher and Irani deliver as always. Goswami and Shergill make the most of their supporting roles. The movie is beautifully shot in gorgeous locations in India, Turkey, Thailand, England and Greece. There are a few great action sequences and one painful jogging chase scene that ends when the pursuers succumb to sprained ankles and side cramps.
But the film’s plot has some issues that are too large to be glossed over. To paraphrase a familiar axiom about mysteries, the outcome must, in retrospect, feel unpredictable but inevitable. There’s nothing about the ultimate outcome of Game that is any way inevitable, despite a few half-hearted attempts at retroactive continuity.
The introduction of new major characters, illogical plot twists, and ludicrous revelations dominate the last 30 minutes of the movie. Plot twists can’t exist independently for the sake of shock value alone; they must exist in service of the larger story (or else they’d just be called “twists”).
The filmmakers didn’t understand that, after a good mystery, the audience should leave saying, “I can’t believe I didn’t see that coming.” Instead, Game ‘s audiences will exit theaters wondering, “Where the hell did that come from?”

Review: Game

Abhishek Bachchan ends the dry spell in theatres with a Hollywood style whodunnit, but fails to end his own, says Megha Shah
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Anupam Kher Kangana Ranaut, Boman Irani, Jimmy Shergill, Shahana Goswami, Sarah Jane Dias Rating: 2/5
In Bollywood, films with a single English word for a title (Luck, Race and now Game) you know will be (attempted) slick Hollywood style thrillers peppered with well coiffured characters each adept at some or the other James Bondery.
Billionaire Kabir Malhotra (Kher) owns an entire island in Greece and lives with sexy secretary (Gauhar Khan). Yet he is not a happy man. Why? Because he wants to avenge the death of his daughter, Maya (Dias) who was forced into prostitution and drugs and the other usual sort of twists of fate that befall, sweet girls with hapless innocence.
Four individuals (Bachchan, Shergill, Goswami and Irani) living in different parts of the world - to facilitate shooting exotic locales, where much of the focus lies - at the same time one night, receive a mysterious invitation from the baron. On reaching the island, he is killed in what seems to be the perfect murder. Enter Ranaut, Chief investigative officer who will change the game for everyone.
This one’s a good Bollywood example of a bad Hollywood film. An old fashioned murder-mystery borrowing from the Agatha Christie bestseller And Then There Were None with an admittedly gripping first half, eye-watering imageryand a plot that has enough intrigue going for it to sustain two and a half hours.
Yet somehow this film, backed by the likes of Farhan Akhtar (dialogues), Javed Akhtar (lyrics) and Shankar Ehsaan Loy (music) manages to blunder it all up thanks to a lack-lustre script (Althea Delmas Kaushal) which wants tightness or wow-worthy twists and turns, making it a bumpy, exasperating ride on a road full of potholes.
The film oscillates between four languages. Hindi, English, Ranaut’s English and Abhishek’s I’m too cool for you, hip-hoppish drawl. Goswami attempts a British accent as well, but unfortunately does not have enough lines to qualify as a separate category.
Dias is one of the few good things about the film – even though the most we see her is in an item song that is quite tough to remember. Come to think of it, I can barely remember any of the music from the film.
If you’ve read your Christie, you know that the least likely person will be the killer. However the murderer is so apparent that you don’t even feel like giving yourself a pat on the back for having guessed it about an hour into the film. Even your most obnoxious know-it-all of a friend won’t say, “I knew it.”
Whodunnit? This one’s more a why-made-it?

‘The Beautiful Game’ Review: A Different Kind of World Cup
This heart-string-tugging Netflix movie about a homeless soccer team, featuring Bill Nighy and Micheal Ward, puts the emphasis on play and uplift.
- Share full article
By Glenn Kenny
It’s moderately surprising that it’s taken filmmakers two decades to concoct a heart-string-tugging underdog story out of the annual coed sport event known as the Homeless World Cup , a weeklong international competition featuring homeless soccer players.
Directed by Thea Sharrock and written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, “The Beautiful Game” is an upbeat, amiable picture that, as its title suggests, puts the sport in front. Which isn’t to say the conditions of the players are ignored. Nathan (Callum Scott Howells), a recovering addict, has a particularly tough time. But the emphasis is on play and uplift. The sunny climes of Rome, where the tournament in the movie is set, help sell it.
The great Bill Nighy plays Mal, the coordinator and coach for England’s team, who one afternoon spots Vinny (Micheal Ward) giving pointers to some younger players. Vinny’s got talent, but Mal seems to recognize more in him. Mal also correctly guesses that Vinny’s more or less living out of his car.
The writer, Boyce, is known for more adventurous fare than this (see “ Tristram Shandy ,” from 2006), but this is a more conventional story. Here, Boyce steers around some clichés, but not others. For example, when Ellie (Jessye Romeo), Vinny’s ever-disappointed former partner, tells him to admit that he’s not going to be able to attend their daughter’s school event, rather than prevaricating, Vinny does just that, proudly proclaiming that he’ll go to Rome despite his initial resistance to Mal’s pitch.
Peppered with funny and inspiring moments, like the charming way the South African team gets a makeup game after being held up at their airport, “The Beautiful Game” is a model of a modern “nice” movie.
The Beautiful Game Rated PG-13 for language, themes. Running time: 2 hours 5 minutes. Watch on Netflix .

The Beautiful Game is not focused on the politics of their lot in life, but rather using athletic skills and a little hope to take them off the streets and into the global eye as part of the Homeless World Cup. It’s a sporting event that takes place nearly every year since being founded in 2003 and so far has helped 1.2 million homeless people see some possible light by way of participation in this universal street soccer event.
The setting for this one is Rome, and at its center is a focus on the English team, a spirited if somewhat disparate and oddball bunch chosen for this unusual event, a Special Olympics of a very different stripe. Bringing them together is grieving widower Mal (Nighy), who has a successful background in the sport but now devotes his life to scouting potential team members for each annual competition (you only get to do this once).
In Rome we meet the various team members and see each is a totally different individual to whom life has thrown a curveball, so why not kick it ? Vinny finds his roommate is Nathan (a terrific Calllum Scott Howells), a likable and enthusiastic guy who we will learn could not beat his heroin addiction unless he is on his meds. Vinny demonstrates his aloof and sour manner in dealing with Nathan — and everyone else, for that matter, as he feels he really doesn’t belong with this group even after being royally welcomed by them due to his obvious talents, if not his actual background of which they have no idea.
Aldan ( Robin Nazari ), Cal (Kit Young), Jason (Sheyi Cole) and others each have their own hangups and problems, but this is a team you want to root for. Mal makes sure they get their chance to shine right from their first game against South Africa, which gives them a jump-start of 3 points towards the cup simply because the team missed their connection and didn’t show. There will, of course, be more who actually do, like Japan, and we see homelessness is a problem experienced everywhere on the planet, but humanity is the common denominator.
Valeria Golino is very fine as the spirited executive in charge of the operation as well as its No. 1 cheerleader. Nighy could not be better or more appealing here, while Ward ( The Old Guard) has a tough task but is excellent in navigating the often unlikable Vinny, a man with loads of potential who never landed a goal in life.
Colin Farrell was a producer and narrator for the 2008 feature documentary, Kicking It , that inspired this film to some degree, and he and his sister Claudine Farrell are among the producers of this one too. Among the large cast are actual Homeless World Cup players taking on non-speaking roles, a nice touch and opportunity provided by the filmmakers. Thea Sharrock ( Me Before You, Wicked Little Letters ) directs with heart but never overwhelms the film with the usual sentimental tropes of the genre. On the heels of Taika Waititi’s 2023 Next Goal Wins , about a losing ragtag Samoan soccer team , this is another admirable addition to a subgenre that relies heavily on the appeal of its cast. The Beautiful Game scores big time in that regard.

Bone chilling thriller and one of the best performance of Tapsee! Though some obvious illogical creations like, arrangement of high security on ground but leaving the terrace area fully open to invite killers! 2 Police men coming to handle 3 killers! If you avoid these illogical things, you will definitely enjoy this movie!

Slick, Stylish But Poorly Scripted. abhikthakur-1 24 December 2011. 'Game' is slick and stylish. The visuals are unusual (Greece, Turkey et al) and cinematography impressive. The only problem is it tries too hard and doesn't have the goods to back up its efforts.
