Social Impact of Sports Events

The Olympic Games, for instance, symbolize the confluence of nations, showcasing the power of sports to bridge cultural and political divides.
Economic Implications
Sports events also have significant economic implications. They stimulate local economies, create jobs, and attract tourism. Cities hosting major events like the FIFA World Cup often experience a surge in infrastructure development, leading to long-term economic growth. However, they should also consider the potential for environmental degradation and resource misallocation.

Sports events are more than just games; they are catalysts for social, economic, and cultural transformation. 500 Words Essay on Sport Event
Introduction: the essence of sport events.
Sport events are an integral part of human culture, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and for spectators to engage in shared experiences. These events are not just about competition; they are a celebration of talent, determination, and the unifying power of sport.
The Historical Context of Sport Events
The tradition of organized sport events dates back to ancient times. The Olympic Games of ancient Greece, first recorded in 776 BC, are perhaps the most famous early example. These games were a religious festival and a social occasion as well as a sporting event. They brought together the city-states of Greece in a spirit of friendly competition and mutual respect.
The Modern Landscape of Sport Events
In the modern era, sport events have expanded in scope and scale. They range from local community games to international mega-events like the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games. These events attract millions of spectators, both on-site and through media broadcasts, making them a significant cultural and economic phenomenon.
The Economic Impact of Sport Events
Sport events have a substantial economic impact. They generate revenue through ticket sales, broadcasting rights, and sponsorships. They also stimulate economic activity in the host city or country, including tourism, construction, and retail. For instance, according to a study by Ernst & Young, the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil contributed $7.2 billion to the Brazilian GDP.
Sport Events and Cultural Exchange
Sport events also facilitate cultural exchange and promote mutual understanding among nations. Athletes and spectators from different cultural backgrounds come together, providing opportunities for interaction and learning. This cultural diplomacy can foster international goodwill and contribute to peace.
The Social Significance of Sport Events
Sport events can also have profound social implications. They can inspire individuals and communities, promote physical fitness and mental well-being, and provide a sense of identity and belonging. Moreover, they can be platforms for social change, as seen in the Paralympic Gamesâ role in promoting disability rights.
The Challenges of Hosting Sport Events
Hosting sport events, particularly mega-events, is not without challenges. These include the high costs of preparation, potential environmental impacts, and the risk of facilities becoming âwhite elephantsâ after the event. Therefore, sustainable planning and management are essential to ensure the eventâs long-term benefits outweigh the costs.
Conclusion: The Future of Sport Events
In conclusion, sport events are a powerful force in society. They offer economic benefits, foster cultural exchange, and have the potential to inspire and bring about social change. However, they also pose significant challenges that require careful planning and management. As we look to the future, the continued evolution of sport events will undoubtedly be a fascinating area of study and engagement.

Great Examples of College Essays About Sports
Where to get your college essay edited for free, or by an expert.
Youâve been brainstorming essay topics for your college applications, and you think youâve finally found the right one: an extended metaphor likening your experience on the field with overcoming personal struggles. The problem: many other students have this same thought.Â
The purpose of a college essay is to make yourself stand out as a unique individual, but when students write about sports, they often blend in. Because of that, students are usually advised to pick a different topic.
That being said, it is possible to write a non-cliche college essay about sports if you put in a little extra effort. Read along to learn how to make your sports essay different from all the other sports essays.
Sports essays are cliche when they follow a standard trajectory. Some of these trajectories include writing a story about:
- An agonizing defeat
- Forging bonds with teammates
- Overcoming adversity
- Overcoming an injury
- Refusing to quit
- Victory during a big game
Because sports essays have very similar themes and âlessons learned,â it can be difficult to make your story stand out. These trajectories also often focus too much on the sport or storyline, and not enough on the writerâs reflections and personality.
As you write your essay, try to think about what your experience says about you rather than what you learned from your experience. You are more than just one lesson you learned!
(Keep in mind that the sports essay is not the only college essay cliche. Learn about other essay cliches and how to fix them in our complete guide).
How to Make Your Sports Essay Unique
1. focus on a specific moment or reflection..
The college essay is a way for students to humanize themselves to admissions officers. You do not feel human if you are describing yourself as just another player on the field!
One important way to make your essay about you (not just about sports) is by focusing on a specific moment in time and inviting the reader to join you in that moment. Explain to the reader what it would be like to be sitting in that locker room as you questioned the values of the other players on your team. Ask your reader to sit with you on the cot in the trainerâs room as your identity was stripped away from you when they said âyour body canât take this anymore.â Bring your reader to the dinner table and involve them in your familyâs conversation about how sports were affecting your mental health and your treatment of those around you.
Intense descriptions of a specific experience will evoke emotions in your reader and allow them to connect with you and feel for you.
When in doubt, avoid anything that can be covered by ESPN. On ESPN, we see the games, we see the benches, we even see the locker rooms and training rooms. Take your reader somewhere different and show them something unique.
2. Use sports to point out broader themes in your life.
The main risk when writing about sports is neglecting to write about yourself. Before you get started, think about the main values that you want to express in your sports essay. Sports are simply your avenue for telling the reader what makes you unique.Â
As a test, imagine if you were a pianist. Would you be able to talk about these same values? What if you were a writer? Or a chemist? Articulating your values is the end, and sports should simply be your means.
Some values that you might want to focus on:
- Autonomy (you want to be able to set your mind to anything and achieve it on your own)
- Growth (you seek improvement constantly)
- Curiosity (you are willing to try anything once)
- Vulnerability (you arenât afraid to fail, as long as you give it your all)
- Community (you value the feedback of others and need camaraderie to succeed)
- Craft (you think that with deliberate care, anything can be perfected)
- Responsibility (you believe that you owe something to those around you and perhaps they also owe something to you)
You can use the ESPN check again to make sure that you are using sports as an avenue to show your depth.
Things ESPN covers: how a player reacts to defeat, how injuries affect a playerâs gameplay/attitude, how players who donât normally work well together are working together on their new team.
Things ESPN doesnât cover: the conversation that a player had with their mother about fear of death before going into a big surgery (value: family and connection), the ways that the intense pressure to succeed consumed a player to the point they couldnât be there for the people in their life (value: supporting others and community), the body image issues that weigh on a playerâs mind when playing their sport and how they overcame those (value: health and growth).
3. Turn a cliche storyline on its head.
Thereâs no getting around the fact that sports essays are often cliche. But there is a way to confront the cliche head-on. For example, lots of people write essays about the lessons they learned from an injury, victory, and so on, but fewer students explain how they are embracing those lessons.Â
Perhaps you learned that competition is overwhelming for you and you prefer teamwork, so you switched from playing basketball to playing Dungeons & Dragons. Maybe, when your softball career ended abruptly, you had to find a new identity and thatâs when you became obsessed with your flower garden and decided to pursue botany. Or maybe, you have stuck with football through it all, but your junior-year mental health struggle showed you that football should be fun and you have since started a nonprofit for local children to healthily engage with sports.
If your story itself is more cliche, try bringing readers to the present moment with you and show why the cliche matters and what it did for you. This requires a fair amount of creativity. Ensure youâre not parroting a frequently used topic by really thinking deeply to find your own unique spin.
Night had robbed the academy of its daytime colors, yet there was comfort in the dim lights that cast shadows of our advances against the bare studio walls. Silhouettes of roundhouse kicks, spin crescent kicks, uppercuts and the occasional butterfly kick danced while we sparred. She approached me, eyes narrowed with the trace of a smirk challenging me. âReady spar!â Her arm began an upward trajectory targeting my shoulder, a common first move. I sidestepped â only to almost collide with another flying fist. Pivoting my right foot, I snapped my left leg, aiming my heel at her midsection. The center judge raised one finger.Â
There was no time to celebrate, not in the traditional sense at least. Master Pollard gave a brief command greeted with a unanimous âYes, sirâ and the thud of 20 hands dropping-down-and-giving-him-30, while the âwinnersâ celebrated their victory with laps as usual.Â
Three years ago, seven-thirty in the evening meant I was a warrior. It meant standing up straighter, pushing a little harder, âYes, sirâ and âYes, maâamâ, celebrating birthdays by breaking boards, never pointing your toes, and familiarity. Three years later, seven-thirty in the morning meant I was nervous.Â
The room is uncomfortably large. The sprung floor soaks up the checkerboard of sunlight piercing through the colonial windows. The mirrored walls further illuminate the studio and I feel the light scrutinizing my sorry attempts at a pas de bourrĂ©e, while capturing the organic fluidity of the dancers around me. âChassĂ© en croix, grand battement, pique, pirouette.â I follow the graceful limbs of the woman in front of me, her legs floating ribbons, as she executes what seems to be a perfect ronds de jambes. Each movement remains a negotiation. With admirable patience, Ms. Tan casts me a sympathetic glance.  Â
There is no time to wallow in the misery that is my right foot. Taekwondo calls for dorsiflexion; pointed toes are synonymous with broken toes. My thoughts drag me into a flashback of the usual response to this painful mistake: âYou might as well grab a tutu and head to the ballet studio next door.â Well, here I am Master Pollard, unfortunately still following your orders to never point my toes, but no longer feeling the satisfaction that comes with being a third degree black belt with 5 years of experience quite literally under her belt. Itâs like being a white belt again â just in a leotard and ballet slippers.Â
But the appetite for new beginnings that brought me here doesnât falter. It is only reinforced by the classical rendition of âDancing Queenâ that floods the room and the ghost of familiarity that reassures me that this new beginning does not and will not erase the past. After years spent at the top, itâs hard to start over. But surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become. In Taekwondo, we started each class reciting the tenets: honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.Â
The thing about change is that it eventually stops making things so different. After nine different schools, four different countries, three different continents, fluency in Tamil, Norwegian, and English, there are more blurred lines than there are clear fragments. My life has not been a tactfully executed, gold medal-worthy Taekwondo form with each movement defined, nor has it been a series of frappĂ©s performed by a prima ballerina with each extension identical and precise, but thankfully it has been like the dynamics of a spinning back kick, fluid, and like my chances of landing a pirouette, unpredictable.Â
Why it works:
Whatâs especially powerful about this essay is that the author uses detailed imagery to convey a picture of what theyâre experiencing, so much so that the reader is along for the ride. This works as a sports essay not only because of the language and sensory details, but also because the writer focuses on a specific moment in time, while at the same time exploring why Taekwondo is such an important part of their life.
After the emotional image is created, the student finishes their essay with valuable reflection. With the reflection, they show admissions officers that they are mature and self-aware. Self-awareness comes through with statements like âsurrendering what you are only leads you to what you may becomeâ and maturity can be seen through the studentâs discussion of values âhonor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.â These are the kinds of comments that should find their way into a sports essay!
âAdvanced females ages 13 to 14 please proceed to staging with your coaches at this time.â Skittering around the room, eyes wide and pleading, I frantically explained my situation to nearby coaches. The seconds ticked away in my head; every polite refusal increased my desperation.
Despair weighed me down. I sank to my knees as a stream of competitors, coaches, and officials flowed around me. My dojang had no coach, and the tournament rules prohibited me from competing without one.
Although I wanted to remain strong, doubts began to cloud my mind. I could not help wondering: what was the point of perfecting my skills if I would never even compete? The other members of my team, who had found coaches minutes earlier, attempted to comfort me, but I barely heard their words. They couldnât understand my despair at being left on the outside, and I never wanted them to understand.
Since my first lesson 12 years ago, the members of my dojang have become family. I have watched them grow up, finding my own happiness in theirs. Together, we have honed our kicks, blocks, and strikes. We have pushed one another to aim higher and become better martial artists. Although my dojang had searched for a reliable coach for years, we had not found one. When we attended competitions in the past, my teammates and I had always gotten lucky and found a sympathetic coach. Now, I knew this practice was unsustainable. It would devastate me to see the other members of my dojang in my situation, unable to compete and losing hope as a result. My dojang needed a coach, and I decided it was up to me to find one.Â
I first approached the adults in the dojang â both instructors and membersâ parents. However, these attempts only reacquainted me with polite refusals. Everyone I asked told me they couldnât devote multiple weekends per year to competitions. I soon realized that I would have become the coach myself.
At first, the inner workings of tournaments were a mystery to me. To prepare myself for success as a coach, I spent the next year as an official and took coaching classes on the side. I learned everything from motivational strategies to technical, behind-the-scenes components of Taekwondo competitions. Though I emerged with new knowledge and confidence in my capabilities, others did not share this faith.
Parents threw me disbelieving looks when they learned that their childrenâs coach was only a child herself. My self-confidence was my armor, deflecting their surly glances. Every armor is penetrable, however, and as the relentless barrage of doubts pounded my resilience, it began to wear down. I grew unsure of my own abilities.
Despite the attack, I refused to give up. When I saw the shining eyes of the youngest students preparing for their first competition, I knew I couldnât let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was. The knowledge that I could solve my dojangâs longtime problem motivated me to overcome my apprehension.
Now that my dojang flourishes at competitions, the attacks on me have weakened, but not ended. I may never win the approval of every parent; at times, I am still tormented by doubts, but I find solace in the fact that members of my dojang now only worry about competing to the best of their abilities.
Now, as I arrive at a tournament with my students, I close my eyes and remember the past. I visualize the frantic search for a coach and the chaos amongst my teammates as we compete with one another to find coaches before the staging calls for our respective divisions. I open my eyes to the exact opposite scene. Lacking a coach hurt my ability to compete, but I am proud to know that no member of my dojang will have to face that problem again.
In the beginning, you might think this is another cliche sports essay about overcoming adversity. But instead, it becomes a unique statement and coming-of-age tale that reads as a suspenseful narrative.Â
The author connects their experience with martial arts to larger themes in their life but manages to do so without riffing off of tried-and-true themes. Through statements like âI knew I couldnât let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I wasâ we learn about the students values and their desire to be there for those who depend on them.Â
The student also brings it full circle, demonstrating their true transformation. By using the âSame, but Differentâ ending technique , the student places themself in the same environment that we saw in the intro, but experiences it differently due to their actions throughout the narrative. This is very compelling!
â1âŠ2âŠ3âŠ4 pirouettes! New record!â My friends cheered as I landed my turns. Pleased with my progress, I gazed down at my worn-out pointe shoes. The sweltering blisters, numbing ice-baths, and draining late-night practices did not seem so bad after all. Next goal: five turns.
For as long as I can remember, ballet, in all its finesse and glamor, had kept me driven day to day. As a child, the lithe ballerinas, donning ethereal costumes as they floated across the stage, were my motivation. While others admired Messi and Adele, I idolized Carlos Acosta, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet.Â
As I devoted more time and energy towards my craft, I became obsessed with improving my technique. I would stretch for hours after class, forcing my leg one inch higher in an effort to mirror the Dance Magazine cover girls. I injured my feet and ruined pair after pair of pointe shoes, turning on wood, cement, and even grass to improve my balance as I spun. At competitions, the dancers with the 180-degree leg extensions, endless turns, and soaring leapsâthe ones who received âBravos!â from the roaring audienceâfurther pushed me to refine my skills and perfect my form. I believed that, with enough determination, I would one day attain their level of perfection. Reaching the quadruple-pirouette milestone only intensified my desire to accomplish even more.Â
My efforts seemed to have come to fruition two summers ago when I was accepted to dance with Moscowâs Bolshoi Ballet at their renowned New York City summer intensive. I walked into my first session eager to learn from distinguished ballet masters and worldly dancers, already anticipating my improvement. Yet, as I danced alongside the accomplished ballerinas, I felt out of place. Despite their clean technique and professional training, they did not aim for glorious leg extensions or prodigious leaps. When they performed their turn combinations, most of them only executed two turns as I attempted four.Â
âDancers, double-pirouettes only.âÂ
Taken aback and confused, I wondered why our teacher expected so little from us. The other ballerinas seemed content, gracing the studio with their simple movements.Â
As I grew closer with my Moscow roommates, I gradually learned that their training emphasized the history of the art form instead of stylistic tricks. Rather than show off their physical ability, their performances aimed to convey a story, one that embodied the rich culture of ballet and captured both the legacy of the dancers before them and their own artistry. As I observed my friends more intently in repertoire class, I felt the pain of the grief-stricken white swan from Swan Lake, the sass of the flirtatious Kitri from Don Quijote, and I gradually saw what I had overlooked before. My definition of talent had been molded by crowd-pleasing elementsâwhirring pirouettes, gravity-defying leaps, and mind-blowing leg extensions. This mindset slowly stripped me from the roots of my passion and my personal connection with ballet.Â
With the Bolshoi, I learned to step back and explore the meaning behind each step and the people behind the scenes. Ballet carries history in its movements, from the societal values of the era to each choreographerâs unique flair. As I uncovered the messages behind each pirouette, kick, and jump, my appreciation for ballet grew beyond my obsession with raw athleticism and developed into a love for the art formâs emotive abilities in bridging the dancers with the audience. My journey as an artist has allowed me to see how technical execution is only the means to a greater understanding between dancer and spectator, between storyteller and listener. The elegance and complexity of ballet does not revolve around astonishing stunts but rather the evocative strength and artistry manifested in the dancer, in me. It is the combination of sentiments, history, tradition, and passion that has allowed ballet and its lessons of human connection to become my lifestyle both on and off stage.
This essay is about lessons. While the author is a dancer, this narrative isnât really about ballet, per se â itâs about the authorâs personal growth. It is purposefully reflective as the student shows a nice character arc that begins with an eager young ballerina and ends with a reflection on their past. The primary strength of this essay is the honesty and authenticity that the student approaches it with.
In the end, the student turns a cliche on its head as they embrace the idea of overcoming adversity and demonstrate how the adversity, in this case, was their own stereotypes about their art. Itâs beautiful!
âGetting beat is one thing â itâs part of competing â but I want no part in losing.â Coach Rob Starkâs motto never fails to remind me of his encouragement on early-morning bus rides to track meets around the state. Iâve always appreciated the phrase, but an experience last June helped me understand its more profound, universal meaning.
Stark, as we affectionately call him, has coached track at my high school for 25 years. His care, dedication, and emphasis on developing good character has left an enduring impact on me and hundreds of other students. Not only did he help me discover my talent and love for running, but he also taught me the importance of commitment and discipline and to approach every endeavor with the passion and intensity that I bring to running. When I learned a neighboring high school had dedicated their track to a longtime coach, I felt that Stark deserved similar honors.
Our school districtâs board of education indicated they would only dedicate our track to Stark if I could demonstrate that he was extraordinary. I took charge and mobilized my teammates to distribute petitions, reach out to alumni, and compile statistics on the many team and individual champions Stark had coached over the years. We received astounding support, collecting almost 3,000 signatures and pages of endorsements from across the community. With help from my teammates, I presented this evidence to the board.
They didnât bite.Â
Most members argued that dedicating the track was a low priority. Knowing that we had to act quickly to convince them of its importance, I called a team meeting where we drafted a rebuttal for the next board meeting. To my surprise, they chose me to deliver it. I was far from the best public speaker in the group, and I felt nervous about going before the unsympathetic board again. However, at that second meeting, I discovered that I enjoy articulating and arguing for something that Iâm passionate about.
Public speaking resembles a cross country race. Walking to the starting line, you have to trust your training and quell your last minute doubts. When the gun fires, you canât think too hard about anything; your performance has to be instinctual, natural, even relaxed. At the next board meeting, the podium was my starting line. As I walked up to it, familiar butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Instead of the track stretching out in front of me, I faced the vast audience of teachers, board members, and my teammates. I felt my adrenaline build, and reassured myself: Iâve put in the work, my argument is powerful and sound. As the board president told me to introduce myself, I heard, ârunners setâ in the back of my mind. She finished speaking, and Bang! The brief silence was the gunshot for me to begin.Â
The next few minutes blurred together, but when the dust settled, I knew from the board membersâ expressions and the audienceâs thunderous approval that I had run quite a race. Unfortunately, it wasnât enough; the board voted down our proposal. I was disappointed, but proud of myself, my team, and our collaboration off the track. We stood up for a cause we believed in, and I overcame my worries about being a leader. Although I discovered that changing the status quo through an elected body can be a painstakingly difficult process and requires perseverance, I learned that I enjoy the challenges this effort offers. Last month, one of the school board members joked that I had become a âregularâ â I now often show up to meetings to advocate for a variety of causes, including better environmental practices in cafeterias and safer equipment for athletes.
Just as Stark taught me, I worked passionately to achieve my goal. I may have been beaten when I appealed to the board, but I certainly didnât lose, and that would have made Stark proud.
This essay uses the idea of sports to explore a more profound topicâgrowing through relationships. They really embrace using sports as an avenue to tell the reader about a specific experience that changed the way they approach the world.Â
The emphasis on relationships is why this essay works well and doesnât fall into a cliche. The narrator grows not because of their experience with track but because of their relationship with their coach, who inspired them to evolve and become a leader.

Sample Answer 1
Here is the sample for âDescribe a Sporting Event you Attended â topic:
A few years ago, my father took me to a basketball game, that was being played at a university. The teams were the Shanghai Sharks and another university team. I canât remember what the team’s name was but they were all dressed in purple and looked quite funny. The game was quite short and only had 2 halves instead of 4 quarters. I can’t remember who won, but it was obvious that the Sharks were playing very soft on the other team. At halftime some of the Shark team members started throwing signed jerseys into the crowd, I think there were about 10 in all. I really wanted one but we were so far back that they never reached us. A friend of mine got one though and I got to try it on. The atmosphere in the stadium was so exciting. Everyone was shouting, whistling, cheering, and just making noise. I was cheering for the Sharks and my dad was whistling so loudly that people started looking at us. I was kind of embarrassed, but he didnât care. After the game, we stopped at a snack shop and got some drinks and a snack.
I don’t think Iâll ever forget that game.

Sample Answer 2
Sports have always attracted me since childhood. I’ve always been the one to participate in a plethora of events in my school. And, in the ones I couldn’t participate in, I made sure to attend them at any cost. Just last week, I was a part of the annual sporting event in my college.
My college takes up the liability to organize and host such sporting competitions to inspire students to participate in extracurricular activities. The event that I am talking about took place in the playground of my college. The entire premises was decorated and embellished attractively. Gradually, everybody began arriving and taking their seats. The competitions commenced around noon. Post the competitions, everybody waited patiently for the prize distribution ceremony.
My parents and my sister had come along to see me play and cheer me simultaneously. I had taken part in a few matches, such as Cricket and Hockey. Fortunately, I won the man of the match in Cricket. Even in Hockey, my team won the match. Some of my classmates were in the opposing team. However, they could not win against us. Overall, I was satisfied with the performance in both matches. Rest of the matches, I sat with my family and enjoyed every bit of them.
The annual sporting event is one of the best events I participate in every year. I enjoy the competitiveness of this event. And, the fact that juniors and seniors come together to win with sweat and blood is completely mesmerizing. Whether I bring any medal home or not, I will always participate in the event enthusiastically.

I have a friend who has a bad back, and if he doesn’t run, play basketball or exercise in some way then his back will go out and he’ll have to stay in bed until it is better.
2 What kinds of sports facilities exist in your community ?
I live near a university and my friends and I often go there to exercise. It has football fields, tracks, badminton, volleyball and tennis courts and other kinds of exercise equipment. There is also a weight room and taekwondo lessons. So I think that my community has quite a good assortment of sports facilities available.
3 Do men and women play the same kind of sports ?
It really depends on the person, because I know some girls who are a lot more athletic than most guys are. But for the most part, girls generally don’t play most of the rougher, aggressive sports. An American friend of mine told me that many of the men there, like to play American football and even though some girls will join the game, most of them will just sit on the side and watch or do something else.
4 How do you think the government could encourage more people to exercise and participate in sport?
Advertisements are some of the biggest ways people are influenced either for or against something. If the government would air some very catchy, appealing ads on TV or maybe even hold a public competition where the winners get a monetary prize that would work, for me it least. I can’t really think of anything else that would work, but that would be their best shot because thatâs what most people will respond to.
5 Do you think children should be encouraged from a young age to participate in competitive sports or team sports ?
I don’t really think that it’s good if children are taught at a young age to be competitive. If you can teach the child how to play competitive sports without stressing that winning is the only way that you can have fun then I guess itâs okay. But personally I think thatâs a bit unrealistic because everyone wants to win, and if kids don’t win their natural reaction is to cry or get mad. This doesnât really help them in life. When they grow up theyâll find that you donât always win the first time around, you just have to keep trying and keep going on with your life.
6 Do you prefer to watch sports events on TV at home or to watch them live ? Why?
I prefer watching sports on TV, because sometimes youâre watching a game that looks like it will be loads of fun but it turns out to be super boring where your team gets creamed and you feel like crying. If you are at the stadium watching the game, there’s nothing you can do but cry, but if you are at home you can just change the channel to something fun. Watching sports at home is also more economical, you can be watching 3 or 4 games for just a few more an hour.
7 What are the advantages and disadvantages of going to see a live sports event, such as a football match, compared to watching the event at home on TV ?
Like I said before, if you go to a sports event you have to stay and watch the whole thing, whereas if you stay at home you can change the channel or turn off the TV. Also you can see the game close up whereas if youâre in the stadium then youâll see a faraway view of the game. One advantage of going to a sports event is that you can experience the excitement of the game. The game is so much more alive and real than if you were just watching it. You feel like if you yell louder then your team might actually have a greater chance of winning. Also if someone decides to streak at halftime then you won’t have to worry about the sports channel switching to the anchors who talk about the game.
8 Does the ticket price to live sporting events affect decisions to attend ?
Yes, I think the price is an extremely big deciding factor. Take the World Master’s Cup in Shanghai, for instance. If the admission fee was only 100 RMB, more than half of Shanghainese could have attended the game.
9 What about the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing â what do you think would be a reasonable price for admission tickets ?
Iâm not really sure, I haven’t thought about it that much, but I’d prefer if they were free so then maybe Iâd be able to go. My best guess is that they will probably go for at least a few hundred yuan a ticket. People from all over the world and China will be coming to Beijing and they will have money, so I donât think price will be a huge problem.

Band 9 sample essay â sports
Home  » IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS  » Band 9 sample essay â sports
These days some people spend a lot of money on tickets to go to sporting or events. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?Â
The issue of whether to spend oneâs hard earned wages on attending expensive football, rugby or baseball matches or other exclusive diversions as opposed using it more wisely and prudently has become a matter of concern for many.
Critics argue that such frivolity is a misuse of precious funds however, I personally believe the opposite. This essay will discuss why the benefits of attending sport or cultural occasions are worth more than the actual ticket price by using examples taken from the Harvard Business Review and the Woodstock Festival.
On the one hand those festival goers and sports fans who attend concerts, gigs, matches or athletic competitions happily extol the virtues of these on their overall well-being, both physical and mental. The main reason for this is twofold, firstly by watching, participating and enjoying a game peopleâs overactive stress levels can be radically reduced.
Secondly, many such important and well-respected events have become a noteworthy opportunity for socializing or networking . For example, a recent article published by the Harvard Business Review showed that key, ambitious top executives in the 500 Fortune companies had invested in tickets for basketball games not only for themselves but for their clients aiming to seek distraction and amusement while entertaining and nurturing future business contacts .
Therefore, although it could be suggested that the high price of ticket sales has been exacerbated by powerful Corporates or event organizers with sky high budgets , there is no doubt of the positive spin- offs to health and business.
On the other hand, if money is no object , then there is overwhelming evidence that going to festivals, attending concerts or investing in experiences is a growing trend which is appreciated because of its ability to build fond and durable memories which last a lifetime and become part of a familyâs history .
An example of this was the mythical Woodstock music festival in 1969, which was a peaceful milestone witnessed by thousands of people who have afforded it legendary status. Thus, the emotional value of such events cannot be overstated.
To conclude from the aforementioned arguments, I firmly believe that despite the frequently prohibitively high prices of attending sport and cultural events, doing so can be enormously positive and justifiable for the benefits it brings to those who are there. Â
From the significant growth in richly diverse Festivals worldwide, it could be predicted that in the future this kind of events will continue to grow in popularity as people elect to spend their earnings on experiences rather than in material goods.

Calculate for all schools
Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, writing an essay about a sport.
Hey everyone, I want to write an essay about my experience playing a sport in high school. How can I make sure my essay stands out and doesn't come across as cliché? Any tips for showcasing it in a unique way? Thanks!
Hi there! It's great that you want to write about your high school sports experience in a unique way. Remember, it's not the topic itself that's cliché, but rather how the story is told. Here are some tips to help your essay stand out:
1. Focus on a specific moment: Instead of writing about your entire sports journey, concentrate on a singular event, experience, or turning point. This approach will allow you to delve deeper into the emotions and lessons that arose from that situation.
2. Reflect on personal growth: Use the sport as a backdrop for a larger story about your personal development. Maybe playing on the team taught you valuable time management skills or it helped you forge meaningful relationships. Discuss how these experiences have shaped you and contributed to your personal growth.
3. Be authentic and genuine: Don't exaggerate your achievements or experiences. Authenticity will always be more engaging than hyperbole. Be honest and share your true feelings and thoughts in the essay.
4. Show, don't tell: Use sensory details, anecdotes, and dialogues to paint a vivid picture of your sporting experiences. Instead of simply stating what happened or how it impacted you, engage the reader with descriptive elements that immerse them in the story.
5. Avoid common themes: Steer clear of emphasizing sports victories or injuries as the central theme of your essay. Focus on unique aspects of your experience that are less likely to be covered in other sports-related essays.
6. Connect to your future goals and aspirations: Tie your sports experience to your future academic or career ambitions. Explain how the skills and lessons you've learned through sports can be applied in college and beyond.
For example, rather than discussing how your team won the state championship, you could write about a specific moment when you overcame self-doubt or anxiety during a critical game. Reflect on how this experience taught you to trust yourself and your abilities, and how this newfound confidence can be applied to various aspects of your life, including college and your future career.

International Sporting Events Are Essential For Easing International Tensions

Major sports events like Olympics and World Cup Football Championship generate considerable interest all over the world. People all over the world watch them and support their teams with great fervour. Some people believe that such events are essential for easing tension between countries. I fully agree with this view.
Sports have always brought people together. The Greeks who started the Olympics used to even halt wars to take part in these events. Even today, wars and conflicts take a back seat when there is a major sporting event like World Cup or Olympics. That is because the soldiers who fight the wars also want to watch these games. Consequently a sense of calm prevails all over the world during such events.
Sporting events also give people a safe opportunity to express their patriotism. When people support their teams they forget their regional identities and think of themselves as one. For example, when there is a cricket match between India and Pakistan the whole of Indians come together to root for their team. People forget their regional identities and other differences and become one. For spectators, supporting their own team is also a great way to express their patriotism. When their team defeats the rival team in the World Cup, people experience the same exhilaration that they would experience if their country had won a war. However, unlike a war, sporting events do not lead to bloodshed. In other words, supporting oneâs team in a sporting event is a safe and peaceful way to give vent to patriotic feelings.
To conclude, major sporting events bring people together and help reduce tension among countries. They are also a safe way to express feelings of patriotism.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry share lead in team event at TPC of Louisiana
AVONDALE, La. â Rory McIlroy is enjoying his first visit to New Orleans â on and off the course.
McIlroy and Shane Lowry shot an 11-under 61 in fourball play Thursday for a share of the first-round lead in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the PGA Tourâs only team event.
The Irish duo shared the lead with the teams of Ryan Brehm-Mark Hubbard, Ben Kohles-Patton Kizzire and Aaron Rai-David Lipsky.
Davis Thompson-Andrew Novak, Thomas Detry-Robert MacIntyre and Cameron Champ-M.J. Daffue were at 62 Twenty teams were 9 under or better on a crowded leaderboard at TPC of Louisiana.
McIlroyâs introduction to New Orleans included a sampling of crab beignets from popular restaurant La Petite Grocery on Wednesday night, a meal he shared with Lowry. On Thursday, they feasted on the Pete Dye layout, birdieing their first four holes.
âIâve had a wonderful time so far,â McIlroy said. âIâve only been here a couple of days but weâre staying downtown. Itâs a cool city, great food scene.â
McIlroy had the teamâs first three birdies, although on the par-5 second Lowry was inches away but watched as his teammate knocked in a putt of about 4 feet. After a pair of pedestrian pars, they birdied four of the next six holes before closing out with a birdie on the par-5 18th to gain a share of the lead.
âWe both played nice golf,â Lowry said, emphasizing the importance getting off to a fast start. âWe both made some nice birdies and contributed to the team, and I think weâre very happy with the day.â
Brehm and Hubbard mirrored McIlroy and Lowry with four opening birdies. The team made the turn in 6-under par 30 and bookended birdies on the 10th and 11th and 17th and 18th holes on the back nine.
âJust like usual, we ham-and-egged it,â Brehm said. âI donât think either of us were feeling amazing about our games coming into the day, but we just feed off each other really well. âI was doing a lot of spectating today.â
Russ Cochran, the oldest player in the field at 65, made his first PGA Tour star since 2013, teaming with Eric Cole for a 69 that left them tied for 73rd. Cochranâs son, Reed Cochran, is Coleâs caddie. Cole had a hole-in-one on No. 14.
On Friday, they will play alternative shot.
âLooking forward to getting out in foursomes tomorrow,â Lowry said. âItâs a format thatâs tougher, but it is an enjoyable format.
McIlroy was noncommittal Thursday when asked if he and Lowry would attend the popular New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on Friday afternoon. The duo have an 8:53 a.m. tee time Friday.
âWhoâs playing tomorrow night, do you know?â McIlroy asked his good friend.
âNo, Iâm not going out anywhere,â Lowry said with a laugh. âIâm staying out of trouble.â
Jazz Fest notwithstanding, McIlroy joked he hopes the pairing has a late tee time Saturday, meaning they will be close to the lead.

Pro sports have a gambling problem. How did we get here, and how bad is it?
Ayesha Rascoe
NPR's Ayesha Rascoe talks to sports columnist Jason Gay of the Wall Street Journal about the explosion of sports gambling and all the scandals that come with that growth.
AYESHA RASCOE, HOST:
Pro sports has a gambling problem. The NBA banned backup Jontay Porter for life for gambling on NBA games. Shohei Ohtani, the biggest name in baseball, had to explain how his interpreter stole and gambled $180 million of Ohtani's money. Two huge gambling scandals, and Jason Gay says they likely won't be the last. Gay is a sports columnist for The Wall Street Journal, and he joins us now. Welcome to the program.
JASON GAY: I appreciate that. Thank you.
RASCOE: So you're saying that global embarrassment for Ohtani and a lifetime ban for Porter won't serve as a wake-up call. Why do you say that?
GAY: I mean, it's very hard to watch television these days, especially sports television, and not be inundated with advertisements for legalized apps which make gambling easier than ever from our fingertips, from our living room while we're watching games. And, you know, that behavior that the public is being asked to participate in - well, athletes are no different from that. Most leagues have rules about betting on their own sports. However, in many instances, they are free to bet on others. So the opportunity is there. The technology is there. And just given the odds, you know, it's one bet I'm willing to make.
RASCOE: OK. For people who don't know a lot about the gambling apps, you can make a lot of bets, right?
GAY: That's right. So for example, if you're picking a winner in a specific game, you know, that's one bet. However, there's a whole other world of what's known as proposition bets or prop bets, and these are bets that can be based on individual performances. X player will score this amount, this many rebounds. You can almost think of anything under the sun, and it's an availability.
You know, in the case of Jontay Porter, you mentioned that he got the lifetime ban from the NBA for betting on NBA games. That's true. In addition to that, though, the NBA declared that he had provided inside information about himself to people who were placing bets. So he was actually participating in a scheme in order for somebody else to profit off of his performance in a game or, in his case, lack of performance in the game because he actually took himself out of a game in order to sort of achieve this statistical low amount in order for the person to win or the people to win.
RASCOE: So for decades, pro and college sports kept gambling at arm's length, I mean, at least publicly. What made them change their minds and kind of embrace sports betting in some instances?
GAY: It's always easy to give the one-word answer, money, right? You know, that's the primary driver here. But a lot of things were colliding all at once - the Supreme Court decision striking down the national prohibition on it, allowing states to vote on it for themselves. That certainly paved the way. Leagues have talked about the idea that legalization and putting these bets in public, under sunshine, sort of creates a transparency that would actually tamp down the amount of shenanigans. You know, that is potentially an upside here, but it's not without considerable downside. And you're already seeing the kind of reconsideration, whether it's the NCAA and Adam Silver himself this week in penalizing Porter talked about some reconsideration, perhaps, of the way that these applications apply to NBA action.
RASCOE: Well, I mean, so do you think, though, that we're past the point of no return when it comes to gambling overall? But there may be changes in how it's done, especially because, you know, people want to know these games aren't rigged and that they are real, you know, athletic endeavors and not, you know, somehow being manipulated.
GAY: Well, that's 100% accurate. That integrity is the absolute baseline expectation for all sports. The moment that people feel that what they're seeing is not really accurate or has been somehow manipulated, you're talking about losing an audience permanently, if not for generations. The competing issue, though, is that all sports are looking for alternative streams of revenue.
Legalizing betting, getting into business with gaming - it's a revenue stream that is also a hedge against the volatility that exists around these sports. It's a way to make sure that money is coming in because they know that there's a certain population of people who are always going to be betting that they can realize. And prior to that, they weren't able to realize one penny of it.
RASCOE: That's Jason Gay of The Wall Street Journal. Thank you so much for joining us.
GAY: I appreciate it. Goodbye.

2024 NFL Draft: Detroit breaks draft attendance record with 700,000-plus fans attending three-day event
Fans flooded into detroit to see the event in person.
The 2024 NFL Draft has been one for the history books.
The event saw multiple records set when it comes to draft picks, with the most quarterbacks taken in the top-eight picks (four), the most taken inside the top 10 (five) and tying the record for most quarterbacks taken in the first round (six). We also saw the longest streak of picks  without a quarterback coming off the board, between Bo Nix  going 12th overall to the Denver Broncos  and Spencer Rattler going to the New Orleans Saints at No. 150.
The players and teams were not the only ones setting records -- the fans also made their mark this year.
More than 700,000 NFL fanatics were in attendance in Detroit over the three-day event to see who their favorite teams would be adding to the squad, setting a new record . Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer made the attendance record announcement on Saturday, the third and final day of the draft.Â
The first day of the draft had 275,000 people and the total number reached 550,000 by the second day, setting a record for Day 1 and Day 2 attendance previously set by Nashville in 2019. Before this year, the total attendance record was also set by Nashville, when 600,000 fans headed to Music City to cheer on their favorite franchises.
The NFL Draft was a free event, but with that many fans in the city, they are expected to generate over $160 million in economic impact, according to the Associated Press.
The draft long took place in New York City, but it began giving bids to other cities in 2015. Since then, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Nashville, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Kansas City and Detroit have held the three-day event. Green Bay is set to host the 2025 NFL Draft.Â

NFL | NFL draft in Detroit sets attendance record with more than 700,000 fans at the 3-day event
DETROIT â The NFL draft has a new attendance record after more than 700,000 fans flooded downtown Detroit for the three-day event.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer broke the news at Campus Martius Park on Saturday during the third and final day of the draft, which consists of selections in the fourth through seventh rounds.
Tracking the Chicago Bears’ moves in the 2024 NFL draft: Punter Tory Taylor selected at No. 122 on Day 3
While it will take years to know if this yearâs picks delivered for their teams, thereâs no doubt that Detroit made the most of an opportunity to host hundreds of thousands of fans and show 50-plus million viewers the new-look city.
Motown beat Music Cityâs three-day attendance record of 600,000 set in 2019, when fans filled Broadway in Nashville.
Detroit drew a record 275,000 people on Thursday for the first round and had 550,000 fans through the second round, breaking Day 1 and 2 attendance records set in Nashville five years ago as part of the leagueâs decade-long tour around the country.
The NFL did not charge fans to attend the event in Detroit, though the visitors and area residents were expected to generate more than $160 million in economic impact at sold-out hotels, packed bars and restaurants, as well as retail stores in the heart of downtown.
Former Lions running back Billy Sims was enjoying brisk sales of barbecue from his restaurant under a tent on a sidewalk along Woodward Avenue on Saturday.
âFans have been great, and business has been good,â said Sims, who was drafted by Detroit with the No. 1 overall pick in 1980. âTo have the draft here is great for the entire state of Michigan.â
The NFL is engaged in some level of talks with 20-plus teams interested in hosting a future draft, which is of particular interest in colder-climate cities that probably canât win a Super Bowl bid.
Green Bay will host next yearâs draft.
