Short Story: I Was Too Late

Death is an interesting concept, one that most people will never have the chance to grasp before it's too late. I, however, am not one of those lucky people. I am one of the few who has looked Death right in the eyes and held my breath as I feared the worst. It was then that I realized my mistake, as once you've stood up to Death...You become Death. You start to see weird visions in your active mind, you start to see people losing their souls in your unconscious dreams. Only this time, they aren't dreams. You can close your eyes and lay down to rest, but you'll never know if you actually get rest...Or if you watch somebody take their final breaths and move on to their next steps. You could fall asleep expecting to have dreams of fairies and butterflies, only to be met by people crying and screaming as a house burns down in flames with people still inside. You can never escape the never-ending loop.

I didn't realize any of this until it was far too late. I had made a deal with Death; I wouldn't die, but instead, I would work for him. I would help him gather souls and have people move on to their next (and final) steps in life. For over 100 years, I'd been assisting him with taking people's hands and walking them to the gates where they take their final steps, I'd been helping them figure out where they were going to—Heaven or Hell—and then I'd open the gate using the proper key as they looked back one last time before stepping into the gate.

I didn't know then that my time was going to be up soon as well.

My heart was racing as I tried to outrun the clock. I was running late, and the soul that was supposed to be passing to the other side was going to expire if I didn't run quick enough. I heaved myself over the edge of the balcony, sprinting over to the stairs and thanking every spiritual divine that existed for the ability to be completely intangible, just passing through everybody that I would have collided into otherwise. Of course, I could choose to turn that ability on and off at ease... But what would that use be if I'm trying to get a soul to the other side? That would be completely pointless to just keep running into everybody that I tried to get past.

Then again, maybe that would have been for the best. I regret trying to save their horrible being. They were a truly horrible person, and I cannot believe that I was even attempting to help somebody like that.

I failed that attempt, I caused the soul to expire before I could get to it. The entire city burned down. The sky was ashen and dark with smoke billowing in the background. I was too late.

I was...Too late...

25 beatles lyrics: your go-to guide for every situation, the best lines from the fab four.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make

The End- Abbey Road, 1969

The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful and so are you

Dear Prudence- The White Album, 1968

Love is old, love is new, love is all, love is you

Because- Abbey Road, 1969

There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be

All You Need Is Love, 1967

Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friend

We Can Work It Out- Rubber Soul, 1965

He say, "I know you, you know me", One thing I can tell you is you got to be free

Come Together- Abbey Road, 1969

Oh please, say to me, You'll let me be your man. And please say to me, You'll let me hold your hand

I Wanna Hold Your Hand- Meet The Beatles!, 1964

It was twenty years ago today, Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play. They've been going in and out of style, but they're guaranteed to raise a smile

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band-1967

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see

Strawberry Fields Forever- Magical Mystery Tour, 1967

Can you hear me? When it rains and shine, it's just a state of mind

Rain- Paperback Writer "B" side, 1966

Little darling, it's been long cold lonely winter. Little darling, it feels like years since it' s been here. Here comes the sun, Here comes the sun, and I say it's alright

Here Comes The Sun- Abbey Road, 1969

We danced through the night and we held each other tight, and before too long I fell in love with her. Now, I'll never dance with another when I saw her standing there

Saw Her Standing There- Please Please Me, 1963

I love you, I love you, I love you, that's all I want to say

Michelle- Rubber Soul, 1965

You say you want a revolution. Well you know, we all want to change the world

Revolution- The Beatles, 1968

All the lonely people, where do they all come from. All the lonely people, where do they all belong

Eleanor Rigby- Revolver, 1966

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends

With A Little Help From My Friends- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967

Hey Jude, don't make it bad. Take a sad song and make it better

Hey Jude, 1968

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they're here to stay. Oh, I believe in yesterday

Yesterday- Help!, 1965

And when the brokenhearted people, living in the world agree, there will be an answer, let it be.

Let It Be- Let It Be, 1970

And anytime you feel the pain, Hey Jude, refrain. Don't carry the world upon your shoulders

I'll give you all i got to give if you say you'll love me too. i may not have a lot to give but what i got i'll give to you. i don't care too much for money. money can't buy me love.

Can't Buy Me Love- A Hard Day's Night, 1964

All you need is love, love is all you need

All You Need Is Love- Magical Mystery Tour, 1967

Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly. all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird- The White Album, 1968

Though I know I'll never lose affection, for people and things that went before. I know I'll often stop and think about them. In my life, I love you more

In My Life- Rubber Soul, 1965

While these are my 25 favorites, there are quite literally 1000s that could have been included. The Beatles' body of work is massive and there is something for everyone. If you have been living under a rock and haven't discovered the Fab Four, you have to get musically educated. Stream them on Spotify, find them on iTunes or even buy a CD or record (Yes, those still exist!). I would suggest starting with 1, which is a collection of most of their #1 songs, or the 1968 White Album. Give them chance and you'll never look back.

14 Invisible Activities: Unleash Your Inner Ghost!

Obviously the best superpower..

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

1. "Haunt" your friends.

Follow them into their house and cause a ruckus.

2. Sneak into movie theaters.

Going to the cinema alone is good for your mental health , says science

Considering that the monthly cost of subscribing to a media-streaming service like Netflix is oft...

Free movies...what else to I have to say?

3. Sneak into the pantry and grab a snack without judgment.

Late night snacks all you want? Duh.

4. Reenact "Hollow Man" and play Kevin Bacon.

America's favorite son? And feel what it's like to be in a MTV Movie Award nominated film? Sign me up.

5. Wear a mask and pretend to be a floating head.

Just another way to spook your friends in case you wanted to.

6. Hold objects so they'll "float."

"Oh no! A floating jar of peanut butter."

7. Win every game of hide-and-seek.

Just stand out in the open and you'll win.

8. Eat some food as people will watch it disappear.

Even everyday activities can be funny.

9. Go around pantsing your friends.

Even pranks can be done; not everything can be good.

10. Not have perfect attendance.

You'll say here, but they won't see you...

11. Avoid anyone you don't want to see.

Whether it's an ex or someone you hate, just use your invisibility to slip out of the situation.

12. Avoid responsibilities.

Chores? Invisible. People asking about social life? Invisible. Family being rude? Boom, invisible.

13. Be an expert on ding-dong-ditch.

Never get caught and have the adrenaline rush? I'm down.

14. Brag about being invisible.

Be the envy of the town.

But don't, I repeat, don't go in a locker room. Don't be a pervert with your power. No one likes a Peeping Tom.

Good luck, folks.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble.

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

The love you have for your family is outstanding. Watching you interact with loved ones just makes me smile . You are so comfortable and you are yourself. I see the way you smile when you are around family and I wish I could see you smile like this everyday. You love with all your heart and this quality is something I wished I possessed.

You inspire me to be the best version of myself. I look up to you. I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life. You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. I have never been more proud to know someone and to call someone my role model. You have taught me so many things and I want to thank you. Thank you for inspiring me in life. Thank you for making me want to be a better person.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

  • Family problems often affect children’s capability to be organized and punctual.
  • Many school kids like buying coffee before class and spend a lot of time in queues.
  • Students might skip a class because they haven’t done their homework.
  • For some people, it’s tough to keep track of time.
  • Absence can be a result of caring for elders.
  • Some may spend too much time preparing breakfast .
  • Some students’ parents distract them instead of helping to get ready for school.

You can discuss one of these reasons in your essay about tardiness and propose what can be done:

Students who live too far away should inform their teachers beforehand that they can be late.

Lateness and Academic Performance

Alternatively, you can focus on the impacts of tardiness on studying. Explain the effects of poor attendance in an essay: write about one of the following points.

  • During the first hours in the morning, students are the most attentive.
  • The first few minutes of class often cover essential information.
  • If you are often late, your tardiness can become chronic, which can affect your academic performance .
  • Tardiness causes behavioral problems and can lead to suspension.
  • Lateness makes you distracted and less attentive.
  • A significant disadvantage of being late is possible conflicts with teachers .
  • Students who are late have problems with keeping accurate records.
  • The ability to follow the instructions is reduced in tardy learners.
  • Students that often arrive late can miss out on important tests or exams.
  • Lateness increases academic stress .
  • Being tardy increases the school workload at home.
  • One pupil’s lateness can disrupt the whole class.
  • Tardiness negatively affects one’s reputation.
  • Lateness usually makes learners feel disconnected from school.
  • Tardiness can result in dropouts.
  • Teachers often decide to keep late students out of class.

The picture talks about mental disorders related to chronic lateness.

  • Learners who are always late might have a harder time getting teachers’ help and support.
  • At worst, chronic tardiness can delay the graduation of affected students.
  • The stress that comes with being late to class can impact learners’ concentration.
  • Teachers may want to check late students’ homework more thoroughly.
  • Tardy pupils may be assigned extra tasks or tests.
  • Tardy students may have to report to the principal .
  • An instructor is less likely to grant you automatic A or other favors if you’re chronically late.
  • Tardiness can start a snowball effect with many unintended adverse consequences.
  • In a lesson with group projects , late teenagers disappoint their classmates.
  • Chronic lateness in middle school may lead to problems in high school.
  • Late students may not be admitted to exams .
  • Tardy students might find it challenging to keep up with the education process.
  • Tardiness decreases motivation to study .
  • Some teachers punish late students by deliberately lowering their grades.
  • Pupils who are not punctual are unlikely to get school awards and prizes.
  • Continually tardy learners are likely to be detained after school.
  • Parents might want to punish their chronically late children by making them to do additional work.
  • Classmates will consider their tardy peers last when they need to select partners for group projects.

You can also discuss how tardy students affect the activity of the whole class:

Students who are late for school cause teachers to interrupt their lessons. They take other students’ attention away from the teacher and can sometimes disrupt discipline in class.

Reasons for Being Punctual

Naturally, every student needs to learn how to manage time properly . So, why not write an essay about the importance of being punctual? Here are some topic examples:

🤔  Essays on Being Late FAQ

Students are often latecomers. Coming to class on time may seem unimportant. There is usually no serious punishment, which is one of the reasons why some students are always late.

The disadvantages are numerous. A latecomer attracts the unwanted attention of the audience and provokes negative reactions. Those who are late do not make a good impression. Coming late is bad in most aspects except for a few advantages like sleeping more.

An occasional late arrival doesn’t necessarily say anything about your personality. Everyone might have some bad days when things just don’t work out well. But always coming late (or often enough) says that you are irresponsible and have poor time-management skills.

Sometimes, students are asked to write an essay after they are late to class. The topic of that essay is simple: being late. It is a means of discipline to help students understand how bad it is to arrive late.

Saying Goodbye to My Brilliant Friend, the Poetry Critic Helen Vendler

Two books, with nothing on their covers, sitting on a plain background. The two books are at close to a right angle with each other and most of their pages are touching.

By Roger Rosenblatt

The author, most recently, of “Cataract Blues: Running the Keyboard.”

One makes so few new friends in older age — I mean, real friends, the ones you bond with and hold dear, as if you’d known one another since childhood.

Old age often prevents, or at least tempers, such discoveries. The joy of suddenly finding someone of compatible tastes, politics, intellectual interests and sense of humor can be shadowed, if tacitly, by the inevitable prospect of loss.

I became friends with Helen Vendler — the legendary poetry critic who died last week — six years ago, after she came to a talk I gave at Harvard about my 1965-66 Fulbright year in Ireland. Our friendship was close at the outset and was fortified and deepened by many letters between us, by our writing.

Some critics gain notice by something new they discover in the literature they examine. Helen became the most important critic of the age by dealing with something old and basic — the fact that great poetry was, well, lovable. Her vast knowledge of it was not like anyone else’s, and she embraced the poets she admired with informed exuberance.

The evening we met, Helen and I huddled together for an hour, maybe two, speaking of the great Celtic scholar John Kelleher, under whom we had both studied; of Irish poetry; and of our families. Helen was born to cruelly restrictive Irish Catholic parents who would not think of her going to anything but a Catholic college. When Helen rebelled against them, she was effectively tossed out and never allowed to return home.

She told me all this at our very first meeting. And I told her the sorrows of my own life — the untimely death of my daughter, Amy, and the seven-plus years my wife, Ginny, and I spent helping to rear her three children. And I told Helen unhappy things about my own upbringing. The loneliness. I think we both sensed that we had found someone we could trust with our lives.

I never asked Helen why she had come to my talk in the first place, though I had recognized her immediately. After spending a life with English and American poetry — especially the poetry of Wallace Stevens — how could I not? The alert tilt of her head, the two parenthetical lines around the mouth that always seemed on the verge of saying something meaningful and the sad-kind-wise eyes of the most significant literary figure since Edmund Wilson.

And unlike Wilson, Helen was never compelled to show off. She knew as much about American writing as Wilson, and, I believe, loved it more.

It was that, even more than the breadth and depth of her learning, that set her apart. She was a poet who didn’t write poetry, but felt it like a poet, and thus knew the art form to the core of her being. Her method of “close reading,” studying a poem intently word by word, was her way of writing it in reverse.

Weeks before Helen’s death and what would have been her 91st birthday, we exchanged letters. I had sent her an essay I’d just written on the beauty of wonder, stemming from the wonder so many people felt upon viewing the total solar eclipse earlier this month. I often sent Helen things I wrote. Some she liked less than others, and she was never shy to say so. She liked the essay on wonder, though she said she was never a wonderer herself, but a “hopeless pragmatist,” not subject to miracles, except upon two occasions. One was the birth of her son, David, whom she mentioned in letters often. She loved David deeply, and both were happy when she moved from epic Cambridge to lyrical Laguna Niguel, Calif., to be near him, as she grew infirm.

Her second miracle, coincidentally, occurred when Seamus Heaney drove her to see a solar eclipse at Tintern Abbey. There, among the Welsh ruins, Helen had an astonishing experience, one that she described to me in a way that seemed almost to evoke Wordsworth:

I had of course read descriptions of the phenomena of a total eclipse, but no words could equal the total-body/total landscape effect; the ceasing of bird song; the inexorability of the dimming to a crescent and then to a corona; the total silence; the gradual salience of the stars; the iciness of the silhouette of the towers; the looming terror of the steely eclipse of all of nature. Now that quelled utterly any purely “scientific” interest. One became pure animal, only animal, no “thought-process” being even conceivable.

One who claims not to know wonders shows herself to be one.

She was so intent on the beauty of the poets she understood so deeply, she never could see why others found her appreciations remarkable. Once, when I sent her a note complimenting her on a wonderfully original observation she’d made in a recent article, she wrote: “So kind of you to encourage me. I always feel that everything I say would be obvious to anyone who can read, so am always amazed when someone praises something.”

Only an innocent of the highest order would say such a beautiful, preposterous thing. When recently the American Academy of Arts and Letters awarded her the Gold Medal for Belle Lettres and Criticism, Helen was shocked.

“You could have floored me when I got the call,” she wrote to me, adding: “Perhaps I was chosen by the committee because of my advanced age; if so, I can’t complain. The quote that came to mind was Lowell’s ‘My head grizzled with the years’ gold garbage.’”

She was always doing that — attaching a quotation from poetry to a thought or experience of her own, as if she occupied the same room as all the great poets, living with them as closely as loved ones in a tenement.

Shelley called poets the “unacknowledged legislators of the world.” I never fully got that famous line. But if the legislators’ laws apply to feeling and conduct, I think he was onto something. If one reads poetry — ancient and modern — as deeply as Helen did, and stays with it, and lets it roll around in one’s head, the effect is transporting. You find yourself in a better realm of feeling and language. And nothing of the noisier outer world — not Donald Trump, not Taylor Swift — can get to you.

In our last exchange of letters, Helen told me about the death she was arranging for herself. I was brokenhearted to realize that I was losing someone who had given me and countless others so much thought and joy. Her last words to me were telling, though, and settled the matter as only practical, spiritual Helen could:

I feel not a whit sad at the fact of death, but massively sad at leaving friends behind, among whom you count dearly. I have always known what my true feelings are by whatever line of poetry rises unbidden to my mind on any occasion; to my genuine happiness, this time was a line from Herbert’s “Evensong,” in which God (always in Herbert, more like Jesus than Jehovah), says to the poet, “Henceforth repose; your work is done.”

She closed her letter as I closed my response. “Love and farewell.”

To Late or Too Late? Grammar Explained With Examples

Marcus Froland

March 28, 2024

Getting grammar right can be a real headache sometimes, especially when two words sound almost the same but mean totally different things. It’s like walking through a minefield blindfolded. You think you’ve got it, then boom, a small mistake blows up in your face. But don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Today, we’re tackling one of those pesky pairs : ‘to late’ versus ‘too late’.

You might think you know which is which, but the English language always has a card up its sleeve. With just an extra ‘o’, the meaning shifts dramatically. So, before you send that next email or text, pause. Could there be a hidden pitfall waiting to trip you up? The answer might surprise you, and what comes next could change the way you use these words forever.

The main difference between “to late” and “too late” is straightforward. “To late” is not correct in English. When you want to say that something is happening after the right time or deadline, the correct phrase is “too late” . For example, if you miss your bus because you didn’t leave home on time, you would say, “I arrived too late to catch my bus.” The word “too” in this context means more than necessary or allowed. Remembering this simple rule will help you avoid mistakes and make your English clearer.

Understanding “To Late” and Why It’s Almost Always Incorrect

In the realm of grammatical errors and English grammar mishaps, the phrase “to late” often stands out as a common yet near-universal mistake. The misuse of “to” for “too” in this phrase is attributable to the fact that “to” serves as a preposition and lacks any relevance when paired with the time-sensitive term “late.” It is easy to fall into this trap of incorrect usage , especially when one is exposed primarily to spoken language without visual cues that help differentiate between “to” and “too.”

Equally challenging are other commonly misused pairs in the English language that often get interchanged due to similar pronunciations. Notable examples include “blond” versus “blonde” and “too bad” versus “to bad.” Such mix-ups are a result of relying more on hearing than on actually understanding the grammatical and functional differences between these terms.

“To late” is almost universally incorrect because “to” functions as a preposition and does not make sense when paired with the time-oriented word “late.” – Anonymous Grammarian

Grasping the unique roles and purposes that “to” and “too” fulfill within sentences is fundamental for preventing misuse in written communication. For instance:

  • “To” is not meant to be coupled with adjectives like “late,” yet it is mistakenly used in place of “too” when someone means to convey that something has occurred past the appropriate time.
  • “Too” is an adverb that emphasizes an excess of something, contrasting with “to,” which functions primarily as a preposition.

Studying these distinctions enables a more comprehensive understanding of both terms’ applications and appropriate contexts. By differentiating between “to” and “too,” aspiring writers will be well-equipped to avoid the pitfalls that these similar-sounding words often present.

The Correct Usage of “Too Late” with Definitions and Examples

In this section, we learn the proper application of the adverbial phrase “too late,” providing clear definitions and examples to enhance your understanding of this commonly used expression in the English language .

What Does “Too Late” Actually Mean?

“Too late” signifies a point in time beyond which a specific action is considered ineffective or irrelevant. In this adverbial phrase, “too” functions as an adverb to modify the adjective “late,” thereby describing an event or action that occurs later than desired or acceptable.

“It’s too late to apologize, the damage has been done.” – Real-life example of “too late” denoting a lost opportunity.

Illustrating “Too Late” in Everyday Language

Below, we present a series of real-life examples to demonstrate the everyday usage of “too late” in various contexts:

  • Exam preparation : “I started studying the night before the test, but it was already too late to learn everything.”
  • Missed opportunities : “I wanted to buy tickets for the concert, but they were sold out by the time I decided. It was too late.”

It is essential to recognize and apply the correct usage of “too late” to enhance your grammatical correctness and proficiency in the English language . This adverbial phrase is used to express missed opportunities or an inability to change outcomes due to untimely circumstances.

The Role of “To” in English – A Preposition’s Place

Prepositions are a significant aspect of English grammar , often responsible for demonstrating the relationships between different elements in a sentence. Among commonly used prepositions , “to” warrants particular attention due to its frequent confusion with the adverb “too.” Exploring the to vs too difference in preposition usage is essential for mastering English prepositions and avoiding common errors.

Defining the Preposition “To”

“To” is a versatile preposition used to indicate direction, movement, or relation within sentences. Generally, you’ll find “to” preceding infinitive verbs (e.g., “to walk,” “to buy”). However, it is essential to note that “to” is not meant to be placed before adjectives or adverbs , such as the word “late” in our discussion on “to late” versus “too late.” The following examples provide a glimpse of “to” in its correct prepositional roles:

  • She went to the store with her friends.
  • He sent a letter to his cousin.
  • I plan to travel around the world next year.

As demonstrated in these examples, “to” serves as a preposition that connects the subject or object of a sentence to another word or phrase element within the sentence, showing the relationships among them.

Prepositions are crucial for creating coherence and clarity in English sentences. They are the links that hold different elements together to create meaning.

English prepositions can be challenging to grasp, particularly as they often hinder the direct translation of other languages’ preposition usage . However, the best strategy for mastering prepositions is understanding their appropriate contexts, learning common examples, and consistently practicing their application. Crucially, it is essential to avoid confusing “to” and “too” by remembering the former’s role as a preposition and the latter’s function as an adverb.

Common Confusions in English: “Too” vs “To”

One of the common English errors that learners and even native speakers encounter is the confusion between “to” and “too.” Both words seem innocent on their own, but when misused, they can lead to misconceptions and obscure the intended message. In language learning , understanding the distinction between these two terms is essential for ensuring correct word usage and improving your English writing skills .

Misconceptions About “To” and “Too”

These two words are often confused due to their nearly identical pronunciation. However, their roles in the context of a sentence are quite different:

  • To : Primarily used as a preposition to indicate direction or to accompany verbs in their infinitive form (e.g., to walk, to see).
  • Too : Employed as an adverb for addition or emphasis, expressing concepts such as “also” or “in excess.”

Mastering the appropriate use of “to” and “too” can significantly enhance the accuracy and clarity of your written communication.

Examples: Correctly Applying “Too” in Sentences

Let’s examine some grammar examples to better understand how “too” should be applied in sentences.

It is too cold outside for a walk. I think I ate too much at dinner last night. She wants to travel to Europe, and I want to go too .

In these sentences, “too” is being used correctly to convey the idea of addition or excessiveness. In the second example, “too” is used to express the excessive amount of food consumed; in the third example, the word implies that the speaker shares the same desire as the other person.

By analyzing these examples, it is clear that knowing the correct usage of “to” and “too” can greatly impact the meaning and clarity of a sentence. By keeping these distinctions in mind, you can elevate your English writing skills and avoid common mistakes .

Exploring the Adverb “Too” – When and How to Use It

Adverbs play a significant role in enhancing the meaning and expressiveness of your writing, and “too” is no exception. As an adverb, “too” serves a multi-functional purpose, conveying the ideas of addition, emphasis, and excessiveness. Understanding its proper usage is essential for effective writing and accurate grammar instruction . Let’s explore some examples of how “too” is applied in various contexts.

1. Indicating Addition or Also:

In this context, “too” is interchangeable with “also,” and it works to emphasize that something is equally applicable or true for the subject in question. For instance:

  • I have been to Paris, and my sister has been there too .

2. Representing Emphasis:

“Too” can be employed to add emphasis to adjectives or adverbs , making the meaning more forceful. Examples include:

  • It’s too hot outside to go for a run.
  • The meeting ran too long and everyone was exhausted.

3. Signifying Excessiveness:

When used in an adverbial capacity to describe excessiveness, “too” highlights that there is an overabundance, often resulting in a negative outcome. Here are a few examples:

  • He works too many hours and doesn’t have a work-life balance.
  • She puts too much effort into her appearance and neglects her health.

Beyond these primary uses, “too” also features in idiomatic expressions that enrich our language with added flavor. Some of these phrases include:

  • Too close for comfort – implies that something is uncomfortably near or almost unsafe.
  • Too good to be true – means that something seems too exceptional or beneficial to be real.
  • Too little, too late – indicates that an action is not enough and comes after the opportunity to make a difference has passed.
“A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.” – Steve Martin

The adverb “too” is a versatile linguistic tool with multiple functions, such as indicating addition, providing emphasis, and suggesting excessiveness. By mastering its various uses and incorporating it into your writing, you can achieve more accurate and expressive communication. Remember to pay close attention to adverbial usage in your grammar instruction for more effective writing skills.

I Served on the Florida Supreme Court. What the New Majority Just Did Is Indefensible.

On April 1, the Florida Supreme Court, in a 6–1 ruling, overturned decades of decisions beginning in 1989 that recognized a woman’s right to choose—that is, whether to have an abortion—up to the time of viability.

Anchored in Florida’s own constitutional right to privacy, this critical individual right to abortion had been repeatedly affirmed by the state Supreme Court, which consistently struck down conflicting laws passed by the Legislature.

As explained first in 1989:

Florida’s privacy provision is clearly implicated in a woman’s decision of whether or not to continue her pregnancy. We can conceive of few more personal or private decisions concerning one’s body in the course of a lifetime.

Tellingly, the justices at the time acknowledged that their decision was based not only on U.S. Supreme Court precedent but also on Florida’s own privacy amendment.

I served on the Supreme Court of Florida beginning in 1998 and retired, based on our mandatory retirement requirement, a little more than two decades later. Whether Florida’s Constitution provided a right to privacy that encompassed abortion was never questioned, even by those who would have been deemed the most conservative justices—almost all white men back in 1989!

And strikingly, one of the conservative justices at that time stated: “If the United States Supreme Court were to subsequently recede from Roe v. Wade , this would not diminish the abortion rights now provided by the privacy amendment of the Florida Constitution.” Wow!

In 2017 I authored an opinion holding unconstitutional an additional 24-hour waiting period after a woman chooses to terminate her pregnancy. Pointing out that other medical procedures did not have such requirements, the majority opinion noted, “Women may take as long as they need to make this deeply personal decision,” adding that the additional 24 hours stipulated that the patient make a second, medically unnecessary trip, incurring additional costs and delays. The court applied what is known in constitutional law as a “strict scrutiny” test for fundamental rights.

Interestingly, Justice Charles Canady, who is still on the Florida Supreme Court and who participated in the evisceration of Florida’s privacy amendment last week, did not challenge the central point that abortion is included in an individual’s right to privacy. He dissented, not on substantive grounds but on technical grounds.

So what can explain this 180-degree turn by the current Florida Supreme Court? If I said “politics,” that answer would be insufficient, overly simplistic. Unfortunately, with this court, precedent is precedent until it is not. Perhaps each of the six justices is individually, morally or religiously, opposed to abortion.

Yet, all the same, by a 4–3 majority, the justices—three of whom participated in overturning precedent—voted to allow the proposed constitutional amendment on abortion to be placed on the November ballot. (The dissenters: the three female members of the Supreme Court.) That proposed constitutional amendment:

Amendment to Limit Government Interference With Abortion: No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider. This amendment does not change the Legislature’s constitutional authority to require notification to a parent or guardian before a minor has an abortion.

For the proposed amendment to pass and become enshrined in the state constitution, 60 percent of Florida voters must vote yes.

In approving the amendment to be placed on the ballot at the same time that it upheld Florida’s abortion bans, the court angered those who support a woman’s right to choose as well as those who are opposed to abortion. Most likely the latter groups embrace the notion that fetuses are human beings and have rights that deserve to be protected. Indeed, Chief Justice Carlos Muñiz, during oral argument on the abortion amendment case, queried the state attorney general on precisely that issue, asking if the constitutional language that defends the rights of all natural persons extends to an unborn child at any stage of pregnancy.

In fact, and most troubling, it was the three recently elevated Gov. Ron DeSantis appointees—all women—who expressed their views that the voters should not be allowed to vote on the amendment because it could affect the rights of the unborn child. Justice Jamie Grosshans, joined by Justice Meredith Sasso, expressed that the amendment was defective because it failed to disclose the potential effect on the rights of the unborn child. Justice Renatha Francis was even more direct, writing in her dissent:

The exercise of a “right” to an abortion literally results in a devastating infringement on the right of another person: the right to live. And our Florida Constitution recognizes that “life” is a “basic right” for “[a]ll natural persons.” One must recognize the unborn’s competing right to life and the State’s moral duty to protect that life.

In other words, the three dissenting justices would recognize that fetuses are included in who is a “natural person” under Florida’s Constitution.

What should be top of mind days after the dueling decisions? Grave concern for the women of our state who will be in limbo because, following the court’s ruling, a six-week abortion ban—at a time before many women even know they are pregnant—will be allowed to go into effect. We know that these restrictions will disproportionately affect low-income women and those who live in rural communities.

But interestingly, there is a provision in the six-week abortion ban statute that allows for an abortion before viability in cases of medical necessity: if two physicians certify that the pregnant patient is at risk of death or that the “fetus has a fatal fetal abnormality.”

The challenge will be finding physicians willing to put their professional reputations on the line in a state bent on cruelly impeding access to needed medical care when it comes to abortion.

Yet, this is the time that individuals and organizations dedicated to women’s health, as well as like-minded politicians, will be crucial in coordinating efforts to ensure that abortions, when needed, are performed safely and without delay. This is the time to celebrate and support organizations, such as Planned Parenthood and Emergency Medical Assistance , as well as our own RBG Fund , which provides patients necessary resources and information. Floridians should also take full advantage of the Repro Legal Helpline .

We all have a role in this—women and men alike. Let’s get out, speak out, shout out, coordinate our efforts, and, most importantly, vote . Working together, we can make a difference.

James Corden Returns to His Gavin and Stacey Roots for 'Last Ever Episode' After Late Late Show Exit

The British sitcom, which aired from 2008-2010, will air its "last ever episode," Corden announced, on Christmas 2024

James Corden has revealed another new gig nearly one year to the day after his departure from The Late Late Show — and it involves a big reunion!

On May 3, Corden, 45, announced on Instagram that he and actress Ruth Jones “have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey ,” a British sitcom the pair previously starred in from 2008 to 2010 for three seasons.

“Some news… It’s official!!!” he wrote in the caption as he shared a selfie with Jones, 57. The duo posed with the script for the episode, showing that it's titled “ Gavin and Stacey : The Finale” and lists them as the writers.

“See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James ❤️,” he added.

The upcoming installment comes five years after the last episode, a Christmas special that aired in December 2019 and saw Nessa (Ruth Jones) propose to Smithy (James Corden). The episode, titled “A Special Christmas,” broke records to become the U.K.’s most-watched scripted TV episode from 2010-2019 with 17.1 million viewers, BBC reported at the time.

The BBC sitcom's latest episode is the second project Corden has worked on since leaving his late-night hosting gig in April 2023.

In November, he announced a new podcast with SiriusXM, This Life of Mine with James Corden , which sees him talk to some of the “world’s biggest stars, discussing the people, places, moments and memories that made them who they are today,” as described in a press release. The show seeks “to tell the untold stories of some of the most well-known public figures,” and since its debut in February, Corden has welcomed a wide array of guests from Dr. Dre to Julianne Moore as well as Tom Ford and Conor McGregor .

On a particularly emotional episode, he had Kris Jenner on as a guest, and shared with her a snippet from his previous conversation with her daughter, Kim Kardashian , who gushed about why Jenner, 68, is her favorite person , bringing the momager to tears.

“My person is definitely my mom, there’s no one like her,“ Kim, 43, told Corden on his podcast. “We give so much love and respect to our dad because he’s not here and we honor that. But sometimes I feel like it takes away from what we would say to her. She deserves all the love and respect.”

“She takes care of us, we take care of her, she’s just the greatest mom on the planet,” Kim continued, and as Jenner watched the clip, she teared up.

“Why are you doing this to me?" Jenner asked Corden as the clip continued.

“Oh, that makes me feel so good. Does anybody have a Kleenex? Little brat!" she joked as she wiped her tears. “Kim is the best, there’s nobody better.”

Corden's decision to leave the Late Late Show hosting gig came out of a desire to spend more time with his family, particularly his three young kids , Max, 11, Carey, 9 and Charlotte, 6, who he shares with wife Julia Carey .

"My kids are getting older, their grandparents are getting older and it perhaps just felt like the right time for us as a family to be freer in our decisions," he told Extra in June 2022, months after revealing that the 2023 season would be his last .

To Late or Too Late? Grammar Explained With 10+ Examples

Understanding the difference between “to” and “too” in sentence structures in English can make for a tricky feat. However, once you understand the basic principles behind it and how it should work from this article, we’re sure you’ll have no problem getting it right. Let’s look at whether it’s to late or too late.

Should I Use To Late Or Too Late?

The correct spelling is “too late” when you want to talk about somebody or something being ineffective because it arrived after the time it was necessary. To say something is late means that it doesn’t arrive on time. We use “too” to add emphasis to the timing, as “too” is a modifier that stresses time words in this sense. “To late” is grammatically incorrect, and you should never use it.

It’s a common mistake that people make when they’re learning. Even some native speakers still get it wrong when they’re typing, too. It’s easy to get away with in spoken English, but the errors become apparent in written English. We’ve touched on why we use “too” instead of “to” in this case, but let’s elaborate slightly.

“Late” is a time modifier word. We use it to say that somebody or something hasn’t arrived on time. “Too” is an adverb that we use to stress specific words, adjectives, and verbs. When we use “too” and a word, we’re insinuating that the word has been emphasized, meaning it’s gotten worse. Someone or something “too late” is well past the designated time it was supposed to arrive.

“To” is a preposition used to express motion or a changing state. In this case, we do not need “to” before “late” because it won’t make any sense.

10 Examples Of “To Late” And “Too Late”

We’ve explained all the important points you need to know about the difference. Now it’s time to look through some examples of how you should use the correct version (and some incorrect variations so you see how it shouldn’t look). Hopefully, when you familiarize yourself with the incorrect sentences, you’ll start to associate the “to” as the incorrect variation, and you won’t end up making the mistakes later on.

Correct:We arrived too late at the venue.

Incorrect:They were to late to make a difference.

Correct:You’re too late . The damage is already done.

Incorrect:I was to late to help the poor person.

Correct:The school closes too late .

Incorrect:I work to late , so I don’t have any free time.

Correct:It’s too late to apologize.

Incorrect:It’s never to late.

Correct:She is too late to make any noticeable difference.

Incorrect:You’re to late to change this.

You’ll see in each of these sentences how you should use the correct variation “too late.” Every time we’re writing about it, we’re adding emphasis to “late” to show that the event has already passed and the person’s arrival in the context would have no impact on the outcome whatsoever. Every time we wrote “to late,” we deliberately used it wrong to show you how it shouldn’t look.

Is It Ever Correct To Use “To Late”?

Sometimes, some exceptions can be present when we get the idea wrong behind certain words and phrases like to late or too late. However, in the case of “to late,” this isn’t true. If we look a little closer at the phrase in question, we’ll start to understand why. Usually, when we use “to” as a preposition before a word, it’s because we’re going to include a verb directly after it. Something like “to see” or “to do” is a perfect example of this.

However, “late” isn’t a verb. “Late” is used in this context as an adjective, meaning that someone or something has arrived late. Since we’re not using a verb, we can’t use “to” before it. It just doesn’t have any grammatical use. Even if we were to take “late” in another context, where it’s not an adjective, it’s still used as an adverb. Something like “I arrived late” or “my late mother” are good examples of adverbs in this way.

Because of this adverb or adjective usage, you will never see “to late” used in writing. You won’t even see native speakers using it as a lazy rule or a way to say “too late” quicker. A native speaker with a good comprehension of English will never use it, so you shouldn’t either.

Why Do People Tend To Spell It Wrong?

Why is it so common to spell wrong, then? Well, it comes down to two major factors. The first is hearing it spoken and seeing it written down. Hearing it spoken helps us understand that “to” and “too” are said the same way. For this reason, many people will spell them the same regardless of the context, which would make them wrong.

The second we can see in the written sense, and you’ve probably already noticed it in this article. “Too” is three letters long, and “to” is two letters, but it’s basically the same word without the extra “o.” A lot of people are confused by the usage of this extra “o” in the word “too” and so tend to avoid using it (or using it all the time instead of “to”).

Sometimes, we can hear the difference a little more obviously. Some people do stress “too” more than “to,” but it’s hard to distinguish as a non-native speaker. It’s just something you have to practice and get used to overtime.

How To Remember If The Correct Spelling Is To Late Or Too Late

We have a quick tip that might help you remember the correct spelling. Basically, remember that “too” is a modifier, and “to” is used only for verbs. With this in mind , knowing that “late” isn’t a verb should make it really easy to work out the rules. Also, if you’re still struggling, the fact that “too” modifies words shows that “too late” is just a more intense way to say “late,” which helps us to remember it!

A 'Maya' girl sits on an altar during the traditional celebration of 'Las Mayas' on the streets of the small village of Colmenar Viejo.

Spring, fertility and an awakening with Spain’s Las Mayas – a photo essay

Since 2014 Spanish photographer Daniel Ochoa de Olza has been portraying the girl participants in a spring festival held in Colmenar Viejo outside Madrid. His portraits bear witness to his fascination with the enduring nature of Spain’s rituals

W ith obscure origins in pagan customs and dating back to medieval times, the festivities of La Maya offers a strange and colourful spectacle celebrating the arrival of spring. Every year on 2 May the families of girls aged between seven and 11 gather to decide which of them will be chosen to be that year’s “Mayas”.

A ‘Maya’ girl sits on an altar during the traditional celebration of ‘Las Mayas’ on the streets of the small village of Colmenar Viejo

Lucia Corrales Alfonso

Rich in symbolism, the tradition speaks of fertility and prosperity, and serves as a blessing for the agricultural season. In preparation for the event the families of the girls build intricate and elaborate altars decorated with flowers and herbs, gathered in the surrounding countryside, and weave a wreath that the girl will wear like a crown.

A carpet of freshly picked plants is laid out in front of the altar and cut flowers are placed in vases either side of the “throne”. There are no written rules when it comes to the decorations and styling. Everything has been passed down orally for generations.

On the day of the festival the girls are dressed in petticoats, white shirts and manila shawls tied at the back and take their places on the altars where they are required to sit, perfectly still and silent, while people file past and admire the splendour of their displays.

Each Maya has a number of attendants who approach passersby, offering to brush their clothes in exchange for a small donation for the family of the Maya to cover their outgoings for the altar. After about two hours of sitting perfectly still the Mayas walk to the church with their families and other celebrants where a service is held. For some time, churches were cautious about welcoming the Mayas after the ritual as the festival clearly predates Christianity in the Iberian peninsula but nowadays the processions are welcomed and accommodated.

The festival’s name is thought to originate in Greco-Roman myth. In Greek mythology Maia was one of the Pleiades, the companions of Artemis, the goddess of the fields. The Greek phenomenon became conflated with the Roman goddess Maia Majesta, symbolising fertility and spring which ultimately gave the month of May its name as it marks the height of spring.

Ochoa de Olza has photographed this magical event in the village of Colmenar Viejo, 21 miles (35km) from Madrid, for the past 10 years. Born in Pamplona and having studied in Barcelona, he felt like an outsider when he moved to Madrid, which made him curious about the regional traditions that make up Spain’s rich cultural heritage. Having photographed bullfighting over many years as well, he was fascinated by the huge range of rituals – from the cruel and gory to the gentle and tender – that can be found around the country.

Speaking about his work on the Mayas, Ochoa de Olza notes that he is more interested in pictures that ask questions than pictures that give answers. This beguiling set of portraits leaves many questions unanswered, working its visual magic around the universal themes of fertility, spring and reawakening.

“I find it interesting that in the 21st century we are still doing these festivals – it is a way to see where we are going and where we have come from – looking back to look forward,” Ochoa de Olza notes.

Seth Meyers Mocks Lawyers for Trying to Keep Trump Awake With Stack of Papers: ‘Also Tried Dramamine Soaked in Bourbon?’ | Video

The NBC host jokes that using a stack of papers is “like trying to get a dog to stop licking its stitches by giving it a Rubik’s Cube”

essay about it was to late

It appears Donald Trump is continuing his trend of falling asleep in court, to the point that his legal team is attempting to keep him awake via various tools — including a stack of paper. Seth Meyers had a good laugh at this on Wednesday night’s episode of “Late Night” though, joking that the “dramamine soaked in bourbon” would be about as effective.

To kick off his “A Closer Look” segment during the show, the NBC host was quick to point out that, on Monday, he mourned missing the chance to cover Trump’s first courtroom nap, due to “Late Night” being on vacation. But Meyers wasn’t too worried about it, also noting on Monday that it would probably happen again.

“You guys, I’m not an expert in many things. But when it comes to Donald Trump, I’m like an FBI profiler,” Meyers joked. “If he ever flees justice, I can tell the Feds exactly where he is.”

Meyers then turned most of his attention to how Trump’s team is trying to keep him awake in court which, according to one news report, includes “devices” like having “a stack of papers with him at all times now to go through.”

“Oh, did stack of papers not work at keeping Donald Trump awake? Have you also tried Dramamine soaked in bourbon?” Meyers joked. “Trying stack of papers to keep Donald Trump awake is like trying to get a dog to stop licking its stitches by giving it a Rubik’s Cube.”

That said, Meyers did have some suggestions — read: hopes — for alternative “devices” including a cattle prod, “or the ‘Clockwork Orange’ eye clamps.”

Mostly though, the late night host was just thoroughly amused by the fact that Trump and his allies continue to refer to President Biden as “Sleepy Joe,” despite the thick irony of Trump’s own antics.

“If your main criticism of your opponent is that he’s sleepy, so much so that you call him Sleepy Joe, then I would say that your one job as a candidate is to not fall asleep in public,” Meyers joked.

“And again, you call her Crooked Hillary, and have since been indicted four times,” he continued. “So we should have seen this coming. When Trump gives someone a nickname, it’s only a matter of time before he can apply it to him.”

You can watch Seth Meyers’ full “A Closer Look” segment in the video above.
