Submissions

The editors —, the avery review essay prize 2024.

SUBMISSIONS DUE FEBRUARY 4, 2024

The Avery Review , a journal of critical essays on architecture published by the Office of Publications at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, invites submissions for its seventh annual Essay Prize. The call is open to current students (undergraduate and masters) and recent graduates, whether in schools of architecture or elsewhere (eligibility details below). In keeping with the mission of the journal, we hope to receive submissions that use the genres of the review and the critical essay to explore the urgent questions animating the field of architecture. We’re looking for essays that test and expand the author’s own intellectual commitments—theoretical, architectural, and political—through the work of others. We plan to award one first-place prize ($4,000) and three second-place prizes ($2,000) across the various categories of eligible participants. The winning essays will be published in our June 2024 issue. We encourage you to (re)visit and (re)read the prize winning essays of years past! In 2023, Clare Fentress reopened a much-needed forum for the concerns of hospice care and its architectures in the United States, directing our attention to the needs of care workers themselves ; Yakin Ajay Kinger wrote a decolonial historiography of Indian baghs from pre-revolution to present day, studying archives, image circulation, and physical sites to counter-read the legacy of a colonial military geography ; Mariam Aref Mahmoud drove Cairo’s Ring Road, through the politics of displacement, the aesthetics of modernization, and the making of Egypt’s housing crisis across regimes ; Sonia Sobrino Ralston revealed the histories of extraction, exhibition, science, and empire hidden within the Stone Exposure Test Wall, a construction of 2,352 individual stones that stands in Gaithersburg, Maryland . In 2022, Bella Carmelita Carriker complicated the “public” memory of 9/11, recording the long-term violences enacted against low-income communities of color ; Supriya Ambwani exposed histories of spatial violence and colonial extraction entangled in the Great Hedge of India ; Gealese Peebles traced the historiographic silhouette of Norma Merrick Sklarek to scrutinize architecture’s diversity narratives ; and Peter Paul Walhout unsubscribed from the internet-as-utility rhetoric in NYC that has come to stand in for questions of inequality during the COVID-19 pandemic . And we invite you to read essays from our 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 Essay Prize winners in issues 31, 39, 46, and 52, which can be found on our Issues page .

Submissions for the Avery Review Essay Prize should take the form of critical essays on books, buildings, and other architectural media, broadly defined. We’re delighted to receive work that was developed in the context of classes and seminars as well as independent writing. Our essays are typically 3,000–4,500 words in length and have some object of review at their core. We like stylish, concise, accessible, and earnestly felt writing. Texts should be submitted as double-spaced Word files without images; you may provide six to eight images compiled into a separate PDF (keep attachments to 3mb max please). Submissions should be emailed to [email protected].

Eligibility

Current undergraduates, current masters-level students, and recent graduates (graduation date after 12/1/2022) from any undergraduate or master’s program at any university are eligible. Please include your student status and graduation date (actual or anticipated) in your submission email. We encourage submissions from any field of study that takes architecture as a subject. If you will be a student in the 2024–2025 academic year, please be aware that in accordance with university and federal policy, prizes and awards are taxable and are reported for inclusion in student financial aid packages, and may reduce other financial aid the student may receive.

CEPT Essay Prize 2024

CEPT Essay Prize 2024 invites young writers from across disciplines of architecture, urban planning, design, humanities and the social sciences to reflect and express their thoughts on one of the oldest forms of creations, both natural and handmade, the Labyrinth. Labyrinths were scratched onto rocks as early as 4500 years ago and are remarkably widespread and variations of the same pattern across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. There have been distinctions drawn between the labyrinth and the maze, while some have considered the two to be sides of the same coin. From underground tunnels to literary devices to psychology, to city planning, no civilisation has left the labyrinth unexplored. It is technical, tricky, psychological, a challenging quest, a defence mechanism, traps, winding and much more. In a labyrinth, we have a feeling that we can never exit.

We invite writers to think like fellow species, like ducks, rats, fishermen, fish, ants, also like Alice in wonderland who navigate life, traps, mazes and labyrinths. Franz Kafka, a famous German novelist of the 20 th century, reminds us of the limits of our own existence, but the maze and the labyrinth offer us the prospect of redemption and hope to prove ourselves in this quest by pitting ourselves against this maze and the maze maker. This is what makes modern cities exciting; this is what makes historical monuments worth exploring; this is what makes the everyday an odyssey. We challenge ourselves, trick ourselves or be tricked; we let ourselves out of the winding pathways, the brain teasers of video games, the tiled mazes at the Warren street station in London, from Mumbai to Jaipur, to New York, to London, to Hongkong, we are in a constant state of quest through labyrinths that invites us to juxtapose the real with the mythical. Are Labyrinths essential to our living? Or aren’t they?

Keywords: Labyrinthine, symbolism, archetype, genesis and geometry, allegory and myths, architecture, folklore and mythology, visual interpretations, Infinity, Reality and illusion, Cultural narratives, time and space, city networks, navigating urban spaces, Labyrinthine city structures, Urban economic networks, Evolution of labyrinths, Land art and recreation, transportation, city infrastructure

Expectations from the abstract: The applicants must submit an original and well-rounded 500-word abstract for the competition entry, clearly articulating the objective and intent of the essay.

Expectations from the second round of evaluation : Please follow the technical guidelines elaborated on the website. The selected candidates should ensure their full essays are suitably edited for language, grammar, consistency in referencing, etc., before submission of the essay. CEPT Essay Prize reserves the right to consider well-written, edited, and well-thought-out essays only.

Important note: The submissions must ensure grammar edits and language corrections as a basic requirement for the first round of selection.

Competition closed: RIBA Journal/Future Architects writing competition 2024

Header Image

If you have something to tell the profession about, this is your chance to reach your audience. Make your name as a communicator – and win a cash prize

Are you a future architect – a student or early-career professional working towards qualification? And do you have strong views about the state of the built environment, whether that’s how it is or what it could be? If so, the RIBA Journal is giving you the chance to have your say, with our writing competition run in collaboration with RIBA Future Architects ,  a community established to inform and inspire emerging architects.

The annual competition is open internationally to entrants studying for Part 1, Part 2 or Part 3, and aims to showcase the voice of the next generation.

This year you are invited to write an article about any building, place or project that shapes the spaces we live in. What does it say about the processes and ideas that go into making architecture, or the contexts in which architects work? We are looking for bright, original pieces of 800-1,000 words that shine a light on topical issues, and could be published in the RIBA Journal.

You could tell us about an architectural experience that has changed the way you think, or work that we could all learn from. Do you know of projects that demonstrate exciting new approaches, or offer fresh perspectives on the practice of architecture? Where does design contribute to tackling the problems we face, from social injustice to climate emergency? What do you value in buildings? Should we revere the exquisite detail or, in a world of constraints and compromise, celebrate ordinary buildings that have their priorities straight and succeed despite the odds? What’s your take on co-design, place-making or attempts to codify beauty in buildings?

Choose any building, place or design project that allows reflection on current themes in architecture, and bring it to life in words.

15 Architectural Competitions for Students 2024

October 13, 2022 by Bassey James Leave a Comment

If you’ve been searching for architectural competitions for students, then I tell you that you have come to the end of your search.

In this article, we have listed a good number of competitions open to students who are in the architecture field of studies. All you need to do is study each competition and know whether or not you should apply.

If you apply to any architectural contest you do not qualify for, that would be a waste of your time, and resources, as you will not be able to win it. You need to try as much as possible to meet the requirements of the competition you wish to apply to, and can also exceed the criteria.

We are not just listing these opportunities without their official link as that would not make any sense. Cognisance of that we have included the official competition website to help you go directly to the website of the sponsor of the competition and gain more information about the Architecture contest and competition and then apply if you so wish.

Note that you cannot apply for any of this context on Stay Informed Group (SIG), as we do not process an application for any competition sponsor. This article is just for informational purposes and the official link included in this article is to direct you to the official page where you can now apply or contact the officials responsible for any of the architectural competitions for students in this article.

Now before any further ado, we are going to start unveiling what this article is all about starting with an overview of what architectural contest is all about and what architectural competitions for students is all about.

We have also included some important tips that could help anyone win architectural competitions for students, you will have an upper hand against your opponent if you read this article well to the end.

What is Architecture?

Architectural Competitions for Students

Before we dive into what we are going to talk about today, I want to, first of all, bring to your knowledge what Architecture is all about.

There are many definitions given to architecture, but there is a simple accepted definition which is that it is the process of designing and planning of buildings, including the construction of structures from the foundational level, which is the designing and drawing of the building or structure on paper.

You can say that architecture is in the form of building structures materially because before one can be able to put up any structure it must be designed on paper including all important details before carrying it out physically.

Architectural work is important in building structures or anything about buildings

You need to be creative and put up good designs for your clients.

All these big structures we see today are started by putting them down on paper and designing every aspect of the building before they are built.

What are Architectural Competitions?

It is of importance that before we continue with the list of the architectural competitions for students we need to talk about what architecture competitions are all about.

Many things may bring about architectural competition. It may be because an organisation needs to construct a new complex and they will do publicity for an open competition where architectural designs would be submitted by contestants.

The type of design to be submitted would be decided by the panel of judges.

The submitted designs will be considered, and vetted by a team and the best design will become the winner of the competitio n .

In some cases, architecture competitions may be open to only students who are studying architecture in their respective universities.

The architectural design would be considered by the host organisation, and the winner may be offered a scholarship, a one-time monetary award, employment or a huge contract after graduation.

How do you win an Architecture Competition?

If you want to win architectural competitions for students there are many things you need to put in perspective for you to stand out.

The first thing is that you need to set your goals, and specifically know why you want to enter the competition.

In this article, we have listed 15 architectural competitions for students, but that does not mean you should apply to all 15 of them as that’ll be a waste of your time.

You need to choose the architectural competition that best suits you, considering their requirement and criteria.

To win any architectural competition you need to meet the requirements, but I suggest if you want to stand out among other competitors, you need to exceed the requirements that would increase your chances.

Now, the presentation is key, you need to present your work in the best way possible; make sure that during your presentation you talk about the best part of the project while you display it for the judges to see.

Before your preparation, you need to get critiques. Do your presentation before your friends, and family members, and get their opinion about your work, and how you can improve. This will help know the places you need improvements.

What does an architecture student need?

Apart from your certificate which shows that you have been certified as an architect, the tools you have can also tell people about what you do.

As an Architecture, or architectural student who’s planning to take part in architectural competitions for students, you need to have some important tools.

These materials and tools are essential for a successful career in Architecture; its importance extends beyond a one-time competition, but you can make use of these tools throughout your career .

What does an architecture student need

Below are some of the vital tools an architect needs to be successful:

Essay Competitions Deadline

Each year, Fitzwilliam College runs essay competitions in a variety of subjects, allowing talented pupils to explore their interests beyond the school curriculum.

The University of Cambridge seeks out students with a passion for their subject and who have investigated it outside the classroom. Our essay competitions provide students with an opportunity to engage with their interests in this way, allowing them to demonstrate their enthusiasm for their subject.

2024 Competitions

This year we will be running essay competitions in Ancient World and Classics, Archaeology, Economics, History, Land Economy, Medieval World and Slavonic Studies. We will additionally be running an Architecture design competition. Further particulars and this year's questions can be found at the links below. Please read the competition rules and submission guidelines carefully before entering a competition.

Ancient World and Classics

Archaeology

Economics (for state-school UK students only - please see link for details on eligibility)

Land Economy

Medieval World

Slavonic Studies

Architecture – students wishing to enter the Architecture Design Competition may find this plan of Fitzwilliam College and information on the history of Fitzwilliam’s buildings useful

The deadline for all competitions is  6pm on  Friday 1st March 2024 .

Competition rules

These essay competitions are exclusively for students in their penultimate year of education (Year 12 in England and Wales, S5 in Scotland, Year 13 in Northern Ireland). They are open to students in any country but submissions must be written in English.

Submissions should strictly adhere to the word limit set out in the subject brief (2500 words for Archaeology, Classics & Ancient World, History, Land Economy, Slavonic Studies and Medieval World; 1500 words for Economics; 500 words for the Architecture narrative), and contain a bibliography at the end. The word count should exclude the bibliography, but include any footnotes. Each page should be numbered and contain the applicant's full name.

We understand that not all students will have previous experience of writing a bibliography, and may not have equal access to advice on doing so. We therefore include this link to guidance on how to correctly use the Harvard referencing system. Anyone who wishes to use a different referencing system is free to do so.

Students are only permitted to enter one competition and may only submit one entry to that competition. There is a strict limit of five submissions per school for each competition. If more than five students from the same school enter the same competition, a teacher from that school will be contacted and asked to select the five entries; failure to do so will result in all submissions from the school to that competition being disqualified. Please note that this limit does not apply to Sixth Form Colleges where year groups are over 1000 students in size. When submitting an essay, the student will be asked to provide the name and email address of a teacher who may be contacted in order to verify the submission.

The submission must be entirely the individual student's work and must not be submitted or have been submitted to an exam board as part of any coursework or extended essay, either in part or in full.

Submission guidelines

Anyone who wishes to enter an essay competition must complete the online form .

Submissions can be uploaded to the online form in a PDF format. If the file size is too big to upload to the form, please email your submission to [email protected] . We can also accept entries by post. Please address postal submissions to: Schools Liaison Officer, Fitzwilliam College, Storey's Way, Cambridge, CB3 0DG.

You should receive an email confirmation after submitting the form. If you do not receive confirmation within 24 hours, please contact us at the email address below. Any technical difficulties will be dealt with on the next day, and students affected may be allowed to submit late in some circumstances.

Writing Webinars

Students preparing submissions who would like advice on essay writing may wish to seek advice from our two essay writing webinars:

  •   Webinar 1 - Initial Preparation - 12th January 2024  at 6pm

**Please note, due to an issue with recording, this is last years webinar. All the information is the same bar these two changes**:

Essay Prize

Each year, the PRIZE Committee selects a topic critical to the investigation of the social art of architecture and poses a Question based on that topic. Full-time undergraduate students in an architecture degree program or majoring in architecture in accredited schools of architecture throughout the world, including Diploma in Architecture students, may submit a 500-word essay proposal responding to the Question. Entries by teams of two students are encouraged and the second team member can be an undergraduate studying in fields related to architecture.

Travel Fellowship

Semifinalists who select this option are invited to submit proposals demonstrating how they would use the opportunity to travel to an architecturally-significant destination of their choosing, preferably to participate in a hands-on service-oriented situation. This is an exciting opportunity to explore a different part of the world and to participate in an organized project that will assist the winner in gaining a deeper understanding of the social art of architecture.

Past Fellowships

Community service fellowship competition.

Semifinalists who select to compete for a Community Service Fellowship are invited to submit proposals demonstrating how they would use the opportunity to initiate a program or join an on-going program that reflects the content of their Essay proposals. This is an exciting opportunity to explore how to start and/or to participate in an organized project that will assist in the overall understanding and application of the social art of architecture.

Architectural Design Fellowship

From 2008 to 2011 the BERKELEY PRIZE Committee offered students the opportunity to compete in the Architectural Design Fellowship Competition to foster the study of the social art of architecture by helping to sponsor local and regional architectural student design competitions that were run by students themselves. This competition challenged the candidates to produce a thorough and practical proposal for a design competition that would benefit their community and bring attention to the resources available to the community from their school.

Teaching Fellowship

From 2013 to 2014 a new BERKELEY PRIZE Teaching Fellowship was offered to undergraduate architecture studio design faculty from around the world. The primary goal of this Fellowship was to support innovative thinking by faculty as they work to focus their students' attention on the social, behavioral, and physical characteristics of the users of the buildings and spaces being designed.

Each year the Berkeley Prize Committee invites a distinguished professor or scholar in the field of architecture or the related social sciences to write about some aspect of the year's Berkeley Prize topic.

  • They are meant to help focus students' thoughts on the issues surrounding the year's Question.
  • They are a model for excellence in writing.
  • They exhibit both how defined and how broad the range of possible response to a Question.

The social art of architecture encompasses a large field of inquiry that links design studies to people studies. In an ever-growing corpus of published work, researchers from a variety of disciplines work with architects to investigate how to make architecture better for all people. The various topics of the history of the BERKELEY PRIZE give a glimpse into the range of these studies. Each year, the PRIZE publishes "resources" to help participants further understand the specific topics. Included in The LIbrary is a selection of these resources as well as other articles and links that detail why architecture is and must be, first and foremost, about people.

Reviews and winners, what do our alumni say.

Chidera O. profile

I loved the little conversations we had when a question about the topic turned into explanations of the ethical, personal and economic issues that surround medicine. Overall, I found my lessons very beneficial. I know so much more about medicine and its different subsets, but also about what a career in medicine really looks like.

Immerse alumni, and scholarship winner

Noor M. 100% Scholarship Winner

I could see that the essay competition was an incredible opportunity for international students to win a scholarship purely based on merit. More importantly, after doing some more research, I realised that the process for choosing winners was incredibly fair, that everyone would get an equal chance regardless of their socio-economic background, race, nationality, gender, etc.

Atlas D. in a boat taking a selfie

I enrolled because I wanted to expand my knowledge of physics and meet other people with the same interests as myself. Both of which I was successful in doing! My favourite aspect of the programme was the small class sizes – this helped both the tutor and students with learning and understanding the subject.

Adriadna M holding flowers in front of a house

Immerse was very fun as well as useful. You were able to experience what it would be like if you studied here for university. The most beneficial part of the course was being able to see what International Relations is like, and it helped me decide what I want to study in the future.

Kornelia K. profile

My school invited everyone to participate, and the further I read about Immerse Education, the more motivated I was to enter the competition. Not only did I have the chance to study a subject I love, I would also be able to expand on my essay skills since writing has always been a passion of mine.

a girl student smiling at camera

I really wanted to go to medicine summer school this year, and so I literally was searching for summer school opportunities and Immerse is one that came up. Through this, I found out about the essay competition and I decided to submit an answer. Immerse was very helpful whilst I was writing my essay, especially with things like the referencing guide.

I’m 16, so I’ve never written an academic essay before, so it was really important that I actually knew what I was doing in the first place and it definitely helped me with that. The programme so far has been very enriching. It’s helped me understand more about medicine and made me realise that this is what I want to do in life. Meeting new friends, tutors, and the mentors, they’re all amazing. My favourite things on the programme have been the evening activities, like murder mystery night. I am so happy to be able to have seen people that are like minded, and competitive as well. I really think that the tutors and the mentors have all been very supportive of me.

An F/A-18E Super Hornet launches from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69). When squadrons in the Red Sea asked for approval to carry more AIM-9X air-to-air missiles, program office and industry collaboration achieved flight clearance in just seven days.

Acquisition Standards Can Be a Two-Way Street

In January 2024, the F/A-18 and EA-18G Program Office (PMA-265) fielded an urgent call from a squadron in the Red Sea supporting Operation Prosperity Guardian. It wanted to carry more AIM-9X missiles on its Super Hornets to bolster its capability against Houthi attacks on merchant vessels. PMA-265 partnered with multiple program offices, the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, and others to provide a flight clearance in just seven days, a process that—depending on complexity—ordinarily could take weeks or months. In this case, collaboration overcame multiple obstacles.

The Program Executive Office for Tactical Aircraft (PEO[T]) has 11 other program offices in addition to PMA-265, which provide comprehensive support to naval aviation aircraft, weapons, and other Navy and Marine Corps systems. Our work spans systems’ full life cycles—from research, design, and development to procurement, test and evaluation, engineering, and logistics.

Revamping RFIs

PEO(T) conducts market research to better involve industry at the start of the acquisition process. Done right, this creates space for innovation, expands the industrial base, and drives competition. Requests for information (RFIs) and sources-sought notices (SSs) convey to industry partners the government’s needs and how it intends to fulfill them contractually. These communications are typically industry’s first and best insight into Navy and Marine Corps requirements.

Early and frequent RFIs and SSs also give PEOs better insight into what industry can provide, which helps shape contracting strategies. They also test assumptions. For example, a program office might assume only an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) can provide a service or product because of complexity, timing, or cost. However, early communication with industry may reveal other vendors that can meet the need.

PEO(T) has also altered how it formulates RFIs and SSs. Instead of explicitly describing a system or service, we now define the desired capability and/or outcome. If vendors cannot meet the delivery deadline, they are given a chance to share capabilities they could provide in the future.

Over the past few years, we have made our language around technical data in RFIs and SSs open to more alternatives. Previously, it was usually assumed a vendor could not supply a product if it did not have access to all the original technical data at the outset. Now, we ask vendors to suggest alternative means to get the data—e.g., by partnering agreements—or if they can produce a similar product with the same form, fit, and function without OEM data.

An engine is tested on board the USS George Washington (CVN-73). GE F414 Engine module shortages made it hard to meet the goal of 341 mission-capable Super Hornets, but a PEO(T) HUD forum helped resolve some of the issues. In November 2023, the Navy surpassed the goal of 1,451 ready-for-issue engines eight months ahead of schedule.

Open Architecture

PEO(T) employs innovative development processes. We know the Navy must develop technology faster—but it has to do so affordably. That means the Navy and industry must continue to strengthen their partnership. One way to do so is through a modular open-systems approach (MOSA). Using Department of Defense–approved standards, MOSAs can lead to fast deployment of cost-efficient, adaptable, and reusable technology.

Open systems and standard architectures allow PEO and PMA teams to decompose a system into smaller subsystems, establishing and maintaining ownership of the interface and integration standards along the way. Subsystems can be competed among a much larger industrial base—so long as they comply with the standards.

PEO(T)’s Air Combat Electronics Program Office (PMA-209) leads MOSA efforts for avionics, sensors, and mission systems across Naval Air Systems Command–affiliated programs. Its avionics architecture team promotes multiple open standards. One was developed and sponsored in-house called Hardware Open Systems Technologies (HOST), a technical standard for high-performance embedded computing. It lays out requirements that a program manager or integrator can use to create a verifiably open system.

In addition to speeding technology deployment, it also widens the aperture for competition and participation from industry, including small businesses. Historically, the best most small businesses could hope for was to be selected to perform work as a subcontractor to a major prime. But open standards create more opportunities for Tier 2 and 3 vendors to compete directly.

Collaborative Forums

Industry input and feedback is critical. PEO(T) is committed to increasing the transparency of its performance and decision-making, as well as the collective situational awareness of the military, civilian, and industry team. One way we do this is through collaborative forums called heads-up display (HUD) meetings.

HUD meetings are for specific platforms, components, and problems to address and resolve barriers to delivery. They are part of the Naval Sustainment System—Aviation and facilitate conversation and problem-solving across Navy and Marine Corps teams. These meetings include the PEO and program office associated with the type/model/series; fleet stakeholders; supporting government entities; and industry teammates. HUDs bridge boundaries across otherwise stovepiped approaches.

PEO(T) uses the same guiding principles in every HUD meeting to set expectations, foster open and honest communication, and build trust. These principles emphasize collaboration and accountability. Participants are challenged to understand the root cause and embrace the “red,” which means sharing honest, sometimes brutal facts to get to the core of issues.

These forums have achieved numerous positive outcomes. For example, the Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment Program Office (PMA-251) relies on HUDs to keep the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System and Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) program running as effectively as possible in support of the newest class of aircraft carriers. Before the first deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) in 2023, the AAG team developed and distributed an important software update in just three months. In a normal software update cycle, that task would typically require 18 months. The HUD meeting brought together Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic; PEO(T); PMA-251; NAWCAD; and industry partners to identify and remove barriers and expedite a solution.

After an issue affecting the readiness of F-5 Tiger II depot aircraft was discovered in 2023, vendors joined a HUD discussion to team with the Adversary and Specialized Aircraft Program Office (PMA-226) and other participants to address the issue. When contract logistics vendors were included, the HUD resulted in immediate benefits and extended the life limit on the part in question. As a result, the adversary fighters gained an additional 2,100 hours of flight time before having to return to the depot.

Industry partners have similarly played a key role in the HUD forum for the General Electric (GE) F414 engine, the power behind the Navy’s twin-engine F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler. From 2019 to 2023, the F414 ecosystem experienced engine module shortages as it struggled to meet the goal of 341 mission-capable Super Hornets. The F414 HUD facilitated collaboration among all stakeholders and provided GE an inside look into how the engine shortfalls affected the fleet. Together, in November 2023, the Fleet Readiness Center Southeast, PMA-265, Naval Supply Systems Command, the Defense Logistics Agency, GE, and other organizations surpassed the goal of 1,451 ready-for-issue F414 engines for the first time since 2018—eight months ahead of the planned recovery schedule.

So, what do we need from industry partners in these HUD forums? Highlight roadblocks and issues early and identify where the government can help break down any barriers. Be prepared to speak to current status and any risks or issues and empower leaders to make real-time decisions. Because supply chain shortfalls remain a challenge, we ask our prime contractors to include sub-tier vendors in HUDs to field solutions as a team.

PEO(T) will continue to look for ways for government and industry teammates to stay aligned and innovate across its entire portfolio. Acquisition and sustainment of capability are essential to the nation’s ability to deter, fight, and win. Strong collaboration built on trust is our bond as we and industry work side by side to rapidly field and sustain capability for the fleet.

Call For Ideas: Tree House 2024 Architecture Competition

Volume Zero Competitions is back with its 2nd edition of the Tree House Architecture Competition. Calling for architects, designers, students, teachers, engineers, innovators, thinkers, and everyone else to be a part of the 24th edition of our architecture competitions.

We all have always yearned for our personal space, one that takes us far away from our chaotic and stressful lives; our very own Home rooted in Mother Nature, one that reconnects us to our origins, rejuvenating our mind, body, and soul. We all aspire for a home that is not just an extension of our persona but is also an expression of our individuality and freedom.

Our Homes are the most significant architectural spaces through which we experience our surroundings. An intimate place that protects, shelters, heals, nurtures, and defines our perspective helping us establish relations to navigate through the chaotic world outside this envelope. Our humble abodes are being redefined with every passing day, the world is fast changing, and so are the homes with it. With the rise of concepts like Smart homes, Tiny Homes, Micro Homes, Homes today are versatile entities – doubling up as offices, play areas, work-out zones, and spaces for interaction and recreation, but at the center of all things is essentially a place to escape and rejuvenate our minds.

Growing up many of us have dreamt of living in a tree house, a fortress to protect and nurture everything we hold dear. An abode high up in the clouds, under the starry skies, amongst the tall trees, chirping sounds of birds and aromas of nature. A playscape for all our dear ones that fosters everyone around helping to fulfill our dreams cultivating a bond that stays. For most of us a tree house is one of our greatest childhood dreams triggering our wildest imaginations, for the lucky few it is a memory that they cherish till date.

As adults, we continue to aspire for our very own Tree House, one that will fulfill our needs to lead productive lives. The Tree House is synonymous with freedom, independence, adventure, creativity, safety, warmth, fun, solitude, and many more emotions aspired by children and adults alike.

Can we imagine our own Tree House, nestled in the lap of nature, atop magnificent treetops and under starry skies?

"A tree is our most intimate contact with nature." George Nakashima.

Opportunity:

With ever growing population calling cities its home the pressure on its resources is tremendous that has resulted in strained living environment. Individuals are exposed to tremendous pressures at work, places of education, financial constraints, and urge to fit in the societal standards bringing humankind to its edge. With lack of breathing spaces within our urban environments and with overwhelming amount of information pushed to us every single day and with constantly degrading balance takes the better out of the most individuals. With little to no contact with our natural surroundings, all of us today dream of living more freely and openly with nature

Research proves that all living beings need ample sunlight and fresh air to function as happy, productive individuals. A consistent contact with our natural surroundings is proved to make humans happier, while also helping them form better interpersonal relationships. Such a contact with nature also helps invoke positive emotions amongst humans. We now have the opportunity to explore this vital relationship between ourselves and Mother Nature and the role well-integrated, sustainable architecture can play in amplifying this bond.

The Tree House looks at redefining a home as an active part of Mother Nature, with all the necessary amenities, resources required for productive living. The Tree House can be visualized to re-imagine sustainability through innovation of maximum usable space in a minimum footprint, suspended between the earth and sky, on spectacular treetops.

Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you. —Frank Lloyd Wright.

We challenge you to go on a nostalgic trip down memory lane and picture a lighthearted home that prioritises solitude and fostering inner tranquility. to picture a life spent in the midst of the great outdoors, beneath the starry sky, and suspended amid the majestic trees. The Tree House should have a unique, imaginative, and sustainable design. It is imperative that the designed proposal facilitate communication between the internal rooms and external surroundings. The suggested design ought to be carefully thought out and shield consumers from the elements of the natural world.

The Tree House would be the primary residence for 2 individuals and the area of the proposal should not exceed 300 sq. ft built up. Proposals may consider spatial flexibility fulfilling all the needs of their users. The Space program for the proposal must include but is not limited to spaces to play, rest, work, eat, cook, clean, sanitize, and unwind. Participants are free to add any other function to the Tree House proposals.

The design should center on a unique character, one that reinforces and maximizes our relationship with Nature.

Client Interaction is one of the critical components of the design proposal. For this competition, entrants may assume an individual, couple, or a genre of people, based on the design concept.

The proposed design may also consider modern technological advancements in architecture to make the tree-house archetype adaptive to its surroundings, making it a comfortable home by eliminating any type of hazards.

Site Selection

Participants are to decide the location for the proposal, such as coastal areas, riverbanks, mountains, forests, urban environments, or even in your backyards. Choose your tree, dare more, and design your treehouse.

7 wild concepts from the 2024 Skyscraper Competition

By Andrew Paul

Posted on Jun 28, 2024 3:46 PM EDT

3 minute read

Since 2006, the architectural design magazine, eVolo , has hosted an annual competition dedicated to highlighting some of the year’s most creative, ambitious, and downright fantastical skyscraper concepts. The publication’s editors announced 2024’s top three winning entries along with 15 honorable mentions picked from a pool of 206 submissions.

[Related: Colossal skyscrapers could harness height for gravity batteries .]

From complex, moving structures featuring integrated farm plots to underwater, ocean-cleaning towers to entire neighborhoods suspended above gigantic dams—this year’s picks may never make it much further than conceptual renderings, but they provide some fascinating, inspirational ideas about what the future of sustainable, intentional city planning could look like across the world.

Urban Intercropping skyscraper concept art

The 2024 Skyscraper Competition’s first place winner is a team whose “Urban Intercropping” submission explores the difficulties facing the metropolitan hub of Xinjiang in northwest China. Inspired by the agricultural method of intercropping, the team’s design features mechanical and non-mechanical facilities to allow for movable housing units and modular farming spaces. For air quality and dust storm control, the team suggests specific plants for each ecological corridor and greenhouse “membrane,” that “provides space for animal migration and healthy green spaces for pedestrians and transportation.”

Ocean Lung concept art

One runner-up, the Ocean Lungs Skyscraper, was envisioned by a 10-person team from Egypt, and would be built over 3000 feet below the ocean’s surface where “state-of-the-art carbon capture technology” would help filter out harmful CO2. The core structure is partially composed of aragonite, a major component in coral skeletons, to help serve as a foundation for new artificial reefs. Meanwhile, the tower’s platforms allow researchers to conduct continuous marine ecosystem monitoring, and present opportunities for scalability to build multiple similar underwater towers.

“Sustainability is paramount,” the team explains in their project description. “This is where innovation meets conservation, breathing life back into the oceans.”

Memory Drop skyscraper concept

One of the most surreal ideas came from Germany’s Pablo Allen Vizan and Inma Herves González—the Memory Drop Skyscraper. Located at Point Nemo, a region in the Pacific Ocean that is the farthest from any landmass, the installation appears to be a meditative retreat complex that everyone is entitled to visit once a year. While there, inhabitants will have access to personalized family data archives containing generations of memories, artifacts, and other digital memorabilia. Memory Drop is explicitly described as a “pilgrimage” for anyone who wishes to experience the installation.

Attempting to articulate the whole idea is pretty difficult, especially when Vizan’s and González’s submission includes a description for a teardrop-shaped spherical tower which “contains a symbolic void that gives meaning to its form.” If nothing else the artwork is very pretty—and who wouldn’t want a free annual trip to the Pacific Ocean?

Check out a few more of eVolo ’s 2024 honorees below.

2024 International Chapter Awards

The Louise Cox Award for Public Architecture: The Embassy of Australia, Washington D.C. by Bates Smart.

architecture essay competition 2024

Bates Smart has been presented with the first ever Louise Cox Award for Public Architecture, the top prize within the 2024 International Chapter Awards.

The international awards program honours exceptional buildings that are designed by Australian architects but situated overseas.

The new Australian Embassy in Washington by Bates Smart dominated the awards ceremony on 29 June, securing not only the Louise Cox Award but the Interior Architecture Award and the Commercial Architecture Award. The project was praised by the jury as being “an exemplar of refined and innovative commercial architecture.”

“The design of the new embassy bravely eschews monumentality and excessive deference to its eminent Washington DC surroundings to paint a compelling picture of Australia as a vibrant, inviting, and youthful country. This picture is realised with remarkable consistency at every scale from urban form to crafted interior detail, and it is a testament to the commitment of both client and architect in delivering on the promise of the original competition-winning scheme,” commented the jury.

Elsewhere in the awards, the Acticity Centre for Dance and Movement-based Arts by Gall and Associates (Gall és Társai Építésziroda) received an Award for Public Architecture. The project team was applauded by the jury for revitalising “[…] a derelict but important brown field site, carefully knitting it back into the city fabric.”

“The architects took an uninspiring collection of buildings and addressed a complicated brief with rigorous aplomb. They confidently addressed many challenging issues, including urban design and connectivity, the creation of new public space, as well as heritage, restoration and sustainability,” commented the jury. “This is a fine example of placemaking and urban healing.”

The winners of the 2024 International Chapter Awards are:

In 2024, the term ‘luxury’ doesn’t only mean richness and elegance—it represents a combination of amazing interior design and extraordinary comfort. The guide we prepared for you explores the best luxury bathroom trends of the year, aiming to highlight a beautiful mixture of elegant aesthetics and functionality.

So, if you’re planning to renovate your bathroom or looking for inspiration for some smaller changes, the trends will bring new ideas. Moreover, they will show you how to turn your bathroom into a chic space that reflects your modern tastes and lifestyle.

1. Biophilic Design Elements

architecture essay competition 2024

Moreover, it’s recommended to add some plant life with vertical gardens or potted plants to your bathroom interior. For this purpose, you should consider plants that can grow and flourish in low-light, humid conditions.

Tropical plants such as air plants, ferns, and similar are all great choices, as they require minimal light and absorb moisture. Other great options include plants that reduce humidity and prevent mold—such as English ivy—or offer medicinal benefits, like eucalyptus and aloe.

2. Advanced Smart Bathroom Technology

Simplicity is one of the main goals of luxury bathroom design . Practically, a minimalist approach focuses on decluttering your bathroom space and stripping everything down to basic functionality. This type of design usually features restrained materials, neutral tones, and clear lines without complex details. Needless to say, this results in a simple but elegant space.

If you want to achieve a minimalistic look like this, you might want to consider wall-mounted fixtures, hidden cabinets, and integrated sinks. Besides that, choosing monochromatic color schemes in white or gray would make this look even more sophisticated and emphasize clean lines and uncluttered spaces.

4. Opulent Color Palettes

While minimalism focuses on light tones, opulent bathroom colors scream “bold.” Such trends usually feature deep blue, rich green, or even daring black details.

Plus, if you want to add an extra touch of luxury to such a design, a feature wall, cabinetry, freestanding bathtub, or metallic accents in gold or brass bathroom taps would do wonders!

5. Statement Marble

architecture essay competition 2024

The secret lies in the veining in the marble, which adds natural artistry and uniqueness to each piece made of it. Sometimes it’s even made in different colors so it accompanies the main base.

6. Wellness Centers

architecture essay competition 2024

Lately, luxury bathrooms have been transforming into personal wellness retreats. Many people decide to add saunas, hydrotherapy tubs, or oversized rain showers to these to recreate the authentic atmosphere of a top-notch spa. Additionally, they also opt for aromatherapy and chromotherapy, which add therapeutic benefits to the comfort of their home.

However, if you want to add more luxurious interior design details to your spa-like experience, you can go with something even better, such as sound systems. You’ll admit, there’s nothing like playing soothing music and setting mood lighting that adjusts to the time of day or night—it just makes every moment in your bathroom a luxurious escape.

7. Eco-Luxury

architecture essay competition 2024

Sustainability has become an increasingly popular aspect to consider when opting for a home design. Clearly, this leads to the introduction of more eco-friendly materials and technologies to interior design ideas for any space within a home, including bathrooms.

Therefore, elements such as sustainably sourced wood and low-flow fixtures that do not compromise style or functionality will definitely allow you to create the luxury bathroom design of your dreams.

8. Layered Lighting Schemes

architecture essay competition 2024

What matters most when setting the standard high in interior design is creating the right atmosphere in your bathroom. In 2024, the focus will be on layered lighting schemes that combine overhead, task, and accent lighting.

Here, you can up your game by adding strategically placed recessed lights, elegant pendant fixtures, and soft LED strip lighting under counters. This will enhance your space’s functionality, illuminate your bathroom effectively, and contribute to a more dynamic and visually appealing environment.

On top of that, adjustable settings allow for an atmosphere that suits different times of day or moods, from bright and clear for morning routines to soft and subdued for a relaxing evening bath.

9. Freestanding Tubs

architecture essay competition 2024

Freestanding baths are the epitome of relaxation. They usually take center stage in bathrooms, coming in unique shapes and sizes, with jet features or materials like volcanic limestone.

Indeed, these are different from regular tubs, as they require a different installation process, some extra plumbing, and installation costs. You can usually find them in luxury hotels, where they serve to create a calming atmosphere thanks to the relaxing bubble baths taking place in them.

10. Integrated Entertainment Systems

architecture essay competition 2024

Finally, the trend of integrated entertainment systems, such as waterproof television, also continues to grow. Other installations include in-mirror screens and the above-mentioned built-in speakers, all designed to create a multi-sensory and entertaining experience.

So, in case you’re planning your bathroom renovation in 2024, these luxury trends offer multiple options you may want to consider. After all, this area shouldn’t only be about aesthetics but also about boosting your daily life through design, technology, and a sustainable lifestyle.

Now that your bathroom is polished, you can start adding fragrances of your choice to it to make it smell like a spa!
