Hoping to be your class president? Winning the position takes a lot of work, but you can absolutely make it happen. Why should you trust me? I was my Junior Class President and Student Government President my senior year, so I know what it takes to get there. In this article, I've outlined every step you need to take to become class president: starting with just getting on student council freshman year, all the way through running in a big election as a senior. 

Why Do You Want to Be Class President?

Before I talk about how to get elected, I want you   to think about why you want to become class president. Do you want to improve school dances? Do you want to have a wider variety of school lunch options? Create a class field trip? Start a fundraiser?

All of these reasons are legitimate. You need to figure out what your own goal is. If you're having trouble, sit down and brainstorm. Think about all the events your student government plans. Which did you attend? Were there issues at these events? What could have been done better? Is it something you could change? This brainstorming should lead you to some ideas of why you want to become president of your class or school.

Why do you need a reason to want to be class president? It'll keep you motivated during your campaign, and it'll help you explain to your classmates why they should vote for you. I'll delve into this in-depth later on in this article. 

First, I'll go over the two major steps you need to follow in order to run a successful campaign.

Step 1: Start Early

If you want to be president of your class or high school some day, you need to start working towards that goal early.

Plan to join student council your freshman year, but don’t expect to be elected president.  Freshman student council elections are usually a mess. Freshman elections typically happen within a month of starting school, so no one knows each other. The person elected president is usually the person whose name other students have heard the most. It’s not usually based on competence or trust.

My recommendation for freshman student council elections: Run for one of the “smaller” offices such as secretary or treasurer.  There is usually less competition for these positions, so you’ll have a better shot of being elected.  During freshman year, your aim should just be to get on the council. Once you're on it, you’ll be able to prove your effectiveness as a leader and can start the climb towards president. I was elected Freshman Treasurer, and then Sophomore Vice President, and then Junior Class President.

But by starting early, I don’t just mean joining the council early...

Step 2: Maintain Relationships

You need to work from the start to build relationships with your classmates so that they know and trust you. This is the most important step to becoming Class President.

Students want to elect someone they like and know is competent.  Be a leader in the classroom. Participate in class discussions and get good grades, it’s how you’ll prove your competence. Don’t be the class clown or the student who’s always on their cell phone or asleep.

Interact with the students around you.  Sit with different groups at lunch. Talk to them about their concerns and what changes they’d like to see happen at the school.

If you’re not currently on student council, ask if you can attend their meetings.  Some student councils allow students who’re interested in joining to sit in on their meetings, and some host an occasional meeting (monthly, bi-monthly, annual, etc.) for students who’re not on the council to voice their concerns and ideas.

Also, if you’re not currently on student council, ask members of student council if they need help with their events.  It’s a great way to test out student council to see if it’s right for you, and it's also a great way to show you’re fit to be on student council/leading student council.

With my advice, you won't be quite so lonely!

How to Run a Winning Election

The two steps I mentioned above will start you on the path to becoming president of your class, but to run a winning election you’ll need to do more.

#1: Get Your Name Out There

To win an election, you need to market yourself.  Start by creating a slogan, even if it’s as simple as “Lauren for Junior Class President.” You want to use one slogan for your campaign that will be used on all of your marketing materials so that your name becomes recognizable. If you don't come up with one slogan and instead use multiple slogans or designs, people may get confused. You want one good slogan that you'll use across all of your material to ensure a clear, focused campaign that'll create name recognition. Think about all of the US presidential campaigns; the posters always have one design from which they never stray.  

#2: Put Up Posters With Your Slogan

The posters can be super simple; even just a print out of the slogan on normal computer paper will work. However, you should have a lot of them.  The exact number will vary proportionally to the number of students in your class (or school, if you’re running for the overall Student Government President). What I mean by that is if your class has 100 students, 10 posters may be enough, but if you have 1000 students in your class, you may want to put up 50 or more posters. Count on some posters being ripped down or disappearing. Most schools have rules against this, but it’s hard to catch someone ripping down a poster. Plan on making extras.

#3: Create Something to Hand Out 

This can be a sticker, button, pencil, etc. You can make these super cheaply by buying labels, printing your slogan onto the labels, and handing them out as “stickers” or putting these labels onto pencils. Again, as I said for posters, the number of handouts you should make will vary based on the number of students in your class or school. If you can afford it, I’d recommend making at least one sticker/handout per student in your class.  The campaigns usually last multiple days, so try to make sure you have enough handouts to give a second sticker or pencil to other students who may misplace the first.

NOTE: You may not be able to use all of my suggestions above. Different schools have different campaign rules. For example, some schools don’t allow you to hand anything out. Check with a teacher or school administrator to make sure you know what the rules are.

What’s the Point of Marketing Yourself? 

You won’t win an election if people don’t know who you are and why you’re running. As I said before, students want to elect people they like and know are competent. Even if you’re a leader in the classroom and getting good grades, if you’re in a class of 1000, you may not know half of your classmates. You want the other half of students who don’t know you personally to know your name and to talk about you with their friends.

Posters help create name visibility.  People will start to recognize your name and will hopefully start to talk to their friends about you. 

Handouts (i.e. stickers or pencils) also help create name visibility and offer you an opportunity to meet more students you don’t know.  At lunch time, travel around your cafeteria, walk up to people you don’t know and ask if they’d like a sticker or pencil . It’s a GREAT excuse to talk to people and will give you an opportunity to convince them to vote for you. 

Make sure you tell them why you want to be president. As I mentioned earlier, whatever reason you decided to run (whether it was to improve school dances or improve the lunch menu) tell it to them! Ask them what they’d like to see happen at the school next year. Show them you’ll be a good listener as well as a good leader!

#4: Ace Your Campaign Speech

Some schools have candidates give speeches or debate.   My school did not. If your school allows you to give a speech, definitely do so!

Here are my recommended points to hit in your speech/debate.

  • Introduce yourself (It may seem obvious, but it will help students who may not know you).
  • “Hi, I’m Lauren Jones, and I’m running for Junior Class President.”
  • Say why you want to be president and why you’re qualified. Your qualifications will be  a combination of personal characteristics and past experiences and successes.
  • “I'm responsible and a good listener. I served as Sophomore Class VP and fundraised more than $1,000 for the Red Cross.”
  • State your platform (what you plan to do differently).
  • “I plan to move our school dance to the Marriott Ballroom instead of our gym.”
  • Say how you plan to accomplish your goals.
  • “I will raise the money to move our dance to the Marriott Ballroom by hosting a school-wide bake sale.”
  • End with your campaign slogan.
  • “Remember, Lauren for Junior Class President.”  

These should be the main points you hit, but I’d recommend injecting some humor into it to make it more interesting. However, your speech should not be too long (I’d recommend 2-3 minutes maximum).  Make it concise and to the point or you’ll lose your audience.

If you market yourself well along with starting early, building a solid reputation, and maintaining relationships, you'll have yourself a winning campaign!

In the first lecture for most courses, the lecturer will ask the class for a volunteer(s) to be Class Rep. Last year I considered signing up, but worried I wasn’t confident enough or wouldn’t have enough time to do a good job. This semester, I thought more about it but once again the opportunities quickly slipped past, until the one of my lecturers emailed the class searching for a second class rep, as nobody had signed up. Before I knew it, I said yes- and I am so glad I did.

As a class representative, you are the spokesperson for the class. Students should feel they can come to you with questions or concerns regarding the course, which you need to relay to the course co-ordinator on their behalf. This is so important, because many students may feel too shy or embarrassed to approach the lecturer, and would rather voice their concerns anonymously. Without a class rep, it would be difficult for the lecturer to gauge how the class is finding the course content, assessments, resources and communication with lecturers. This makes your role so important in allowing the course to run smoothly, and in turn, the class to be happy!

There are a few compulsory aspects involved in being a class rep, but they shouldn’t take you too long. You must complete a training session and quiz, collect feedback from the class three times during the semester and follow this up with the course co-ordinator, and attend two department meetings where you share this feedback collected from the class.

It is also important to regularly communicate with the class. I would recommend setting up a class Facebook page. The class will appreciate it if you use this to post updates regarding assessments or announcements from the lecturers, however this isn’t compulsory. This means it would be really helpful for you to understand the course timetable, assessment format and any important due dates.

Being the class rep does require a bit of extra work, but overall was a highly rewarding experience that I will certainly volunteer for again. I highly recommend it to everyone, even if you are concerned about how you will fit it in with your busy university schedule, or if you are a little shy  but want to step out of your comfort zone. In these cases, it could be a good idea to volunteer for a course where there are multiple class reps sharing the role with you. From my experience, many courses with a large number of students have 2-3 class reps.

There are so many benefits to being the class representative! From developing your personal and professional leadership skills by communicating with a large number of students and collaborating with other class representatives, to staying organised with good time management of the feedback deadlines and department meetings on top of your own study schedule.  Because of these skills which you develop, it could better a great addition to your CV. Aside from this, it is also a great way to meet fellow students and connect with your class, which can be difficult to do in university.

How to Set Up a Class Representative Program in Your Classroom

How to recruit class representatives

I post an announcement in class for the first week of classes, and also an announcement as a News item on D2L, indicating: • duties and time commitment involved (i.e., meet with me once per week for ~30-40 min to discuss all aspects of the course; class reps bring forward their own concerns as well as those of other students) • what interested students should do (i.e. e-mail me with their class schedule, or with a list of what days/times during the week they are available).

How to decide and schedule meeting times

The day/time for the meeting is determined by what works best for the majority of students as well as for me, and also when a suitable meeting room is available (my office is too small for these meetings). There will always be some people that cannot make the meeting time; in the email I send out to the group about the first meeting, I explain how I set the meeting time and thank those people who can’t attend for their interest in being a class rep.

How to select the number of class representatives

Four or 5 for my smaller classes (of 60-100) and about 8-12 for the large first-year classes of ~400. Initially I worried about having too many class reps and would limit the number of students but soon found that there is always some attrition over the term. It is much better to have a larger group rather than a very small group: some of the most valuable discussions are those among the students themselves and if you have too few students (e.g. only 2 or 3), these discussions just don’t happen—the students feel more intimidated about speaking up if there is not safety in numbers. Also bear in mind that not all students can attend every meeting, due to other commitments or conflicts. I invite all of the students who are available at the meeting time, and have not had any trouble with having too large of a group.

What to do at the first meeting

Like a first class, the first class rep meeting is crucial to setting the tone for the term. • I start with introductions: each of us introduces her/himself, where we're from, major, year and some sort of "ice-breaker" e.g. the highlight of your summer. We repeat brief versions of these introductions (just name & major) over the next few meetings, since there are often new people joining, and it takes a while to learn names (at least for me!). • Next, I provide some background as to why I use class reps: e.g. unlike end-of-term surveys and USRIs, feedback from class reps helps me make changes while the course is running. I share my philosophy that it is not “my” course but “our” course and thus it is crucial to hear students’ perspective on the course.

  • I explain their role, which is to provide student perspective on how the course is going, and that all aspects of the course are on the table (lectures; labs; assignments; exams e.g., after the midterm I will ask them whether the midterm accurately reflected the learning objectives, whether there was sufficient time, etc.).
  •  I emphasize that I really want their honest, constructive feedback and spend a bit of time telling them how to give constructive feedback (e.g. use of “I” statements). It is important to also let them know what their role does not include: e.g., they are not responsible for sharing their notes with students who miss class (this request comes up a lot in some terms since at least some class reps have their email addresses posted on D2L).
  •  I ask for permission to post their first names and email addresses on D2L, so that students can email them with issues to be brought up at the meeting. This is not a requirement: if some students do not want their email listed, that is fine but I have rarely had students indicate that it is not OK. I also ask if they are willing to stand up in class and be introduced as a group, so that the other students will know who the class reps are; I repeat this step a few times over the term. The class reps tell me that most of the input they get is from people they sit with in labs or class—including conversations around them that they overhear at the beginning or end of class—but sometimes people do seek them out.
  • I ask if they have any questions about their role or any aspect of being a class rep. After answering the questions, I leave for ~5 minutes, explaining that sometimes students hesitate to provide constructive criticism if they feel that they are the only one with that concern. Giving them time to talk among themselves first means that when we do get into their concerns, the issues come from the group rather than from an individual student. Leaving the students alone also helps them gel as a group.

The two most important things about the first meeting are:

  • to create an informal atmosphere that encourages constructive and honest feedback. I bring Timbits or cookies or some sort of snack (to this and to subsequent meetings) to reinforce the casual and collegial atmosphere;
  • to plan how you will follow up in class. I make sure to spend a few minutes in the next class explaining that I met with the class reps, outlining their role and indicating how students can contact them. It’s important to update the class about what you discussed with the class reps, especially if there are any changes that you're making in response to the discussions (even little things like pace of lectures). Students have told me that just knowing I meet and discuss issues with the reps makes them feel that there is a better atmosphere and better communication in the class. You need to report back regularly about the class rep meetings, but this first report is perhaps the most critical.

How much time does it take for the weekly meetings?

The first meeting takes the longest, and can be about 45-50 minutes; subsequent meetings are generally 30-40 minutes at most, depending on the topics being discussed. Later in the term, when the issues that the students raise have been discussed and settled (e.g. the pace of class), the meetings are often shorter, perhaps 15-20 minutes; however, these meetings are often when students ask about bigger issues relating to their program overall or to the discipline.

I “chair” the meetings in that I start the meetings and wrap the discussion up as well as pose questions and ask for feedback, but prefer to use the term “facilitate” rather than “chair” as the atmosphere needs to be very informal and welcoming. I make notes of what the students say but make it very clear that I am not writing down who said what (and I show them this, early on). I generally have an agenda in my mind, in terms of what specific questions I will ask and/or specific topics that I would like to discuss, but I only jot these in my notebook rather than circulating an agenda—again, this choice is based on creating a relaxed/informal atmosphere. As for the first meeting, after welcoming everyone, I leave for ~5 minutes so they can talk among themselves.

Are there questions that guide these discussions?

In my experience, it is important to have some planned questions to get the discussion started Some of these are specific questions e.g. How did you feel about the amount of time allocated for the team assignment last class? But many of the questions are very open ended, such as the ones I use to start most meetings (What is going well? What is not working so well?). I have also found, at least early in the term, that when there are lulls in the discussion I need to prompt the students by asking questions such as What other concerns or suggestions do you have? This encouragement seems necessary at least at first, until they become more comfortable offering their feedback.

How do you respond to student suggestions that are not practical/possible for your course?

In my experience, students generally become comfortable offering constructive criticism when they see that I will listen and consider what they are saying. I have hardly ever had anyone who was confrontational or rude, and I try to listen and not be defensive. If they are critical of something that I am not willing to change (e.g. late policies for lab assignments), I will listen to their concerns and then explain the rationale for the policy. For such topics, I will often say that I will think it over and get back to them at the next meeting; even if I don’t make the change, they know that their views were heard and considered. I've also found it effective to ask them if there are alternatives that they can think of for the policy that would work for both them and me; often we have a good discussion and their suggestions have sometimes improved course procedures.

Crockett Leads Effort to Ensure All Students Can Apply for Aid

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is leading a letter to address disparities in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process, which disproportionately affect students from households with mixed immigration status. According to a recent Texas Tribune article , approximately 1 in 4 Texas students live in mixed-status families or have an undocumented parent. Despite initial efforts by the Department of Education to rectify submission issues, students now face delays in application processing and disbursement, potentially resulting in the loss of thousands of dollars in financial aid. 

In her open letter to Texas colleges and universities, Congresswoman Crockett urgently calls for their assistance in rectifying this injustice. She underscores the importance of ensuring that affected students can apply for and receive financial aid on par with their peers, despite technical barriers in the FAFSA process. 

"It's unacceptable that eligible students are being left behind in the financial aid process due to delays in resolving this issue," stated Congresswoman Crockett. "We urge universities to join us in assisting these students to access the same opportunities for college funding as their peers." 

Congresswoman Crockett's advocacy seeks to level the playing field for students grappling with FAFSA processing challenges. She requests that institutions track financial aid allocations for similarly situated students last year until the Department of Education resolves the issue, ensuring that affected students are not unjustly penalized.

Open Letter to Texas Colleges and Universities Accepting Federal Student Aid:    Due to technical issues with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, the Department of Education has begun releasing financial aid information for some students, while other students whose FAFSA contributor lacks a Social Security Number (SSN) have still yet to have their applications processed. Unless prompt and decisive action is taken, tens of thousands of Texas students face losing critical financial aid that could make the difference between whether or not they are able to attend college. Accordingly, we, the undersigned Members of Congress, are requesting your institution track the amount of financial aid that went to similarly situated students last year to ensure it remains available until the Department of Education certifies that this issue has been resolved, and the affected Institutional Student Information Records (ISIRs) have been received so as to ensure those affected by this issue are not unjustly penalized by this error.    When filling out the FAFSA, generally, a student must have their contributor—i.e., an individual whose signature and financial details are required for submission, such as parents, guardians, or spouses—sign in and provide information for their FAFSA. As a result of the changes made to the FAFSA process, if a student’s contributor does not have an SSN, the student is unable to have their financial aid information processed and sent to schools, preventing the student from receiving an aid package critical in many students’ determination about their ability to afford a college education. This is due to a bug in the initial FAFSA redesign, which prevented contributor information from being included. Under the old form, however, families with mixed documentation status were able to provide this information without it affecting the processing and timing of their application.    Attempting to resolve this issue, the Department of Education instructed students to submit the incomplete information anyways, with the assurance it would be fixed later. Subsequently, tens of thousands of students submitted incomplete FAFSAs on this assurance, including many of our constituents.     Beginning in March, the Department of Education announced it had begun sending out ISIRs of some students. 1 Later, the Department announced that corrections—whether those needing to be made by individuals, or those that the Department had indicated it would make on its own—would not begin until mid-April. 2   However, even if the SSN issue is fixed for new applications, which the Department is currently stating is largely the case, there are still thousands of students whose FAFSAs are in limbo and are therefore unable to be sent out until at the earliest mid-April through no fault of their own. Sadly, many of these students awaiting access to corrections were the families who attempted to complete their FAFSA first and now will be penalized because they are unable to correct their form in a timely manner.    The tragic consequence of all this is there are now two groups of students with different access to financial aid, with no distinguishing factor other than whether their contributor has an SSN.  Put differently, at this moment, only students whose contributors have SSNs are having their ISIRs sent out to your institutions and are able to be awarded state- and institution-level financial aid awards. But as you are well aware, these dollars are limited. As a result, we are deeply concerned that should things continue as they are, all these funds will be exhausted before those experiencing SSN issues are even able to have their information processed and sent out by the Department of Education.    It must be noted that one of the most common reasons a student’s contributor does not have an SSN, is because of their immigration status. To be clear, the affected students are all qualifying U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, or eligible non-citizens—it is for no other reason than the immigration status of their family that many students face these barriers. We are greatly troubled about the disparate discriminatory impact this will have on thousands of Texas students seeking financial benefit being foreclosed to them due to nothing other than the immigration status of their contributor. And while some might find it to be “expedient to control the conduct of adults by acting against their children, . . . directing the onus of a parent's [actions] against his children does not comport with fundamental conceptions of justice.” 3     Fortunately, individual colleges and university systems like yours are not without means to remedy this unconscionable harm. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has issued guidance that institutions should not penalize students whose ISIR was delayed beyond the deadline through no fault of their own. 4 Were this guidance not implemented, and ISIRs from FAFSAs that were subject to the SSN complications are not properly received by an institution’s deadline, students will be excluded from accessing state and institution level financial aid for no other reason than the immigration status of their contributor. Accordingly, it is imperative that your institution fully implement the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s guidance by considering affected ISIRs as timely received for priority consideration and encourage the Board further extend the deadline.     However, adjusting priority deadline policy alone is not sufficient.  As your institution knows, financial aid dollars are exhausted far in advance of normal deadlines. An institution which only adjusts its deadline policy may still find that it has awarded all of its available funds before the institution even receives the SSN-burdened students’ ISIRs.
