Free Online Textbooks

Surging textbook costs are more than an affordability crisis — they’re an equity and access issue. As an Oregon State University faculty member, you can better support Oregon State students by choosing open educational resources in the place of traditional textbooks.

Explore the collections and search tools below to get started.

Oregon State University OER

OSU faculty regularly publish and contribute to open educational resources. This includes open textbooks as well as other open-source media and course materials.

OSU Open Textbooks Explore a vast collection of open textbooks published by OSU faculty in collaboration with OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit (OERU). Intro to Permaculture A highly interactive public education project, developed at Oregon State, that teaches students worldwide how to design sustainable landscapes and ecosystems. Spanish Course materials for Spanish 111, 112 and 113. These learning objects were created by OSU faculty in collaboration with the OERU.

Other OER Collections

Institutions around the world host collections of OER that are freely available for faculty to use or adapt. Below are some well-known and well-vetted collections to explore.

OER Commons This is a public digital library, created by the U.S. Department of Education, that provides educators at all grade levels with free access to a wide range of open-source materials including lesson plans, textbooks, activities, assessments, readings and more.

Search tools for OER

With so many collections to explore, using a multi-repository search tool can help you explore a wider range of materials. You’re also able to compare materials from different sources. But keep in mind that the quality of search results varies more with these tools.

OASIS OASIS is an OER search tool that provides access to full textbooks, modules, homework sets, audiovisual materials and more. Created by the State University of New York Geneseo Libraries and supported by SUNY OER Services, the tool searches open content from hundreds of different sources and contains hundreds of thousands of records. OASIS also provides a list of open textbooks that have been peer-reviewed by faculty from various colleges and universities.

Ebooks from other libraries

Other libraries have alternative selections for ebooks. For example, public libraries may be a good source for popular fiction. New York's public libraries have a large collection of ebooks and other downloadable material:

  • Ebooks at New York Public Library
  • Ebooks at Brooklyn Public Library
  • Ebooks at Queens Library

You may also find a great number of Ebooks in the public domain (any book written before 1922) freely available online. See below for several sites which offer free ebooks:

  • Google Books
  • Project Gutenberg
  • Internet Archive Ebooks and Texts
  • Open Library

Search Google Books by keyword to find 1-3 uninterrupted pages in a book. Google Books is fully searchable, but it blocks continuous display of and disallows download in PDF format. Also see HathiTrust.

PEN America says it draws its information on bans from "publicly available data on district or school websites, news sources, public records requests, and school board minutes."

Among the key takeaways:

  • The vast majority of school book bans occurred in Florida, with 3,135 bans across 11 of the state's school districts. A spokesperson with Florida's Department of Education declined NPR's request for comment.
  • Book bans are often instigated by a small number of people. Challenges from one parent lead to a temporary banning of 444 books in a school district in Wisconsin.
  • Those who ban books often cite "obscenity law and hyperbolic rhetoric about 'porn in schools' to justify banning books about sexual violence and LGBTQ+ topics (and in particular, trans identities)," the report says.
  • There is a similar surge in resistance against the bans, says the report. Authors, students and others are "fighting back in creative and powerful ways."

Who's doing the banning?

A study by The Washington Post found that in 2021-2022, "Just 11 people were responsible for filing 60 percent" of book challenges.

At a press conference today, free expression advocates from around the country that joined PEN America to discuss bans talked about the seemingly-outsized power of a small, but vocal, group.

American Library Association report says book challenges soared in 2023

High school senior Quinlen Schachle, the president of the Alaska Association of Student Governments, said when he attends school board meetings, "It's, like, [the same] one adult that comes up every day and challenges a new book. It is not a concerned a group of parents coming in droves to these meetings."

Laney Hawes, Co-Director of the Texas Freedom to Read Project said books are often banned because of "a handful of lists that are being circulated to different school districts" and not because of "a parent whose child finds the book and they have a problem with it."

To fight so-called book bans, some states are threatening to withhold funding

To fight so-called book bans, some states are threatening to withhold funding

PEN America defines a book ban as "any action taken against a book based on its content...that leads to a previously accessible book being either completely removed from availability to students, or where access to a book is restricted or diminished."

The conservative American Enterprise Institute took exception to PEN America's April 2022 banned books report . In a report for the Education Freedom Institute, AEI said it found that "almost three-quarters of the books that PEN listed as banned were still available in school libraries in the same districts from which PEN claimed they had been banned."
