Google Classroom: When to Use the Different Assignments & How to Assign Work

Here is a guide to set the different assignments under the Classwork tab in Google Classroom. This brief tutorial shows the different options; assignment, quiz assignment, question and material, when and how to assign them.

The object of this tutorial is to give you an overview of what you can achieve with the different assignments supported on Google Classroom. You will need to first head over to the Classwork tab, second after Stream on the top once you are inside your classroom. This tutorial assumes that you have created your first classroom. You can see how to start your own virtual classroom in under 2 minutes for help. We will cover the following:

• create assignments and questions
• use topics to organise classworks into modules or units
• order work by dragging them up or down in Classwork page

Types of Assignment

There are four types of assignments you can create on Google Classroom. They are as follows:

• Assignment (points awarded, good for final assignment with manual marking and use of Rubric)
• Quiz assignment (points awarded, good for automatic marking and grading)
• Question (no points awarded, good for single question quick survey, short answer, multiple choice)
• Material (no points awarded, good for reading assignment or lesson preparations)

Apart from the above, you have the ability to reuse existing post and create topic header. The former lets you reuse posts you have published on Stream in this or other Classes. The latter is topic header you can add to organise the classwork by modules or units. Let’s start looking at each of these different classwork, when to use them and how to create them.

A. Assignment

Probably the most commonly used classwork is the assignment. Here you can pick one of the following top options when creating an assignment. Beyond filling in the title and instruction, choose to:

• Add an existing resource: Google Drive , Link , File or YouTube
• Create a new document: create a new Google Docs , Slides , Sheets , Drawings or Forms

The first option allows you to add a Google Drive, Link to web resources, upload or choose an online file to add to Classroom’s Google Drive. You can use this to assign work like “access the work files or resources in Google Drive”, “revise or research using this link”, “download, open and read the document attached” and “watch this video tutorial or recorded seminar”.

The second option lets you create online documents. This can be a word document, slide presentation file, spreadsheet, drawing or forms. There is no need to upload a document. Here is where your assignment is created and marked totally online. Use the option to assigning a copy to each student and marking them separately with in-line feedback, grade and comments.

As you can see Assignment covers a lot of grounds in terms of resources and online document format supported.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create an Assignment using Google Docs

Here is how to create an online assignment using Google Docs. [number correspond to image in gallery below]

• Open your class
• Click on the second tab, Classwork
• Click “ + Create ” button and choose Assignment
• In the pop up window, add Title and Instructions
• Click “ + Create ” button and choose Docs [4]
• A new tab will open to show the new Google Docs [5]
• Change the title of the document by clicking on Untitled document (top left corner)
• Enter the instruction for assignment into the body, look for  All changes saved in Drive  status in top bar then close tab and return to previous Assignment tab [5]
• Don’t worry if the document still says Untitled document, next to this click drop down menu and choose Make a copy for each student . [6]
• Complete the options in the right side bar (for course, all or select students, grade points, due date, topic and marking rubric (optional) then click Assign button. [7]

NOTE: You can also choose to Schedule the assignment, save or discard draft by clicking on the drop down arrow next to the Assign button.

You will then be returned to the Classwork page where you can see the assignment you have just created, click on it to open a summary card. [8]

B. Quiz Assignment

Based on Google Forms, the quiz is the other assignment you can create as classwork. This is great to gauge the students understanding of the subject. Like any questionnaire or form, you can use different field types when designing your form.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create an Quiz Assignment

• Click “ + Create ” button and choose Quiz Assignment
• A new pop-up window will appear, enter the Title and Instructions for this quiz
• Click on the Blank Quiz link to open the Google Forms file. Click on the title Blank Quiz to change this and start editing the quiz by completing and adding more questions including answers and points for automatic marking.
• Once you have completed your editing, look for All changes saved in Drive , close the tab and return to previous Assignment tab.
• Complete the options in the right side bar (for course, all or select students, grade points, due date, topic and marking rubric (optional) then click Assign button.

You will then be returned to the Classwork page where you can see the assignment you have just created, click on it to open a summary card.

C. Question

The third type of assignment is Question. This is more of a simple single question survey with option to choose between a short answer or multiple choice answer. Nothing more beyond that. It is probably the quickest to set up and least complicated. This is useful to get quick answers from the group. Students can be allowed to see everyones answers and change their answer. No points can be awarded for this assignment.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create Question as Assignment

• Click “ + Create ” button and choose Question
• A new pop-up window will appear, enter the Question and Instructions for this question
• Choose from drop down menu to select Short answer or Multiple choice .
• Here you can also add resources or create online files in Google Drive.
• Complete the options in the right side bar; class(es) the Question is for, assign to All or specific students, Points, Due date and Topic. Also choose if other students can reply to each other and edit their answer if Short answer is chosen. Or, choose if students can see class summary if Multiple choice is chosen.
• Click the Ask button when ready.

D. Material

The last and final assignment is the Material. Here you can assign learning materials for students to study and prepare. As before, you can upload a resource or create online file as material. Like Questions assignment type, no points can be awarded for Material assignment type.

Step by Step Guide on How to Create Material as Assignment

• Click “ + Create ” button and choose Material
• In the pop-up window, complete Title and Description field
• Choose to add a resource or + create online document
• Then configure the assignment using right sidebar, pick to assign to All students or select individuals and pick the Topic this comes under.
• When ready click the Post button.

Google Classroom is a digital hub where students, teachers, and supporters of both can engage and collaborate. You can create user-friendly quizzes and assignments, along with supporting materials, in just a few clicks. All you need is a free Google account.

To get started, open your web browser, and go to classroom.google.com . Sign in to your Google account, and then either create a class or click an existing one. Once you're in a class, click the "Classwork" tab, click "Create," and then select "Quiz Assignment."

The quiz assignment form is identical to the basic assignment option, with the addition of a blank Google Form that will serve as your quiz. You can use both the assignment and quiz again later.

In the quiz assignment menu, give your quiz a title, and then provide additional instructions, if necessary.

Click "Add" if you want to attach a file from Google Drive, a web link, your computer, or YouTube. You can also click "Create" to automatically create and attach a file from Google Docs , Slides , Sheets , Drawings , or Forms .

For any additional attachments, click the drop-down menu within each assignment to choose whether students can view or edit that file. You can also choose to make copies of a file for each student.

If you attach any files other than the initial blank quiz in Google Forms, Grade importing is automatically disabled. This feature sends the results of the Quiz to the Grades tab on the main page of your class. If you want to disable this feature with only one attachment, toggle-Off the "Grade Importing" option.

You can use the drop-down menus on the left to select assignees, set the point value of the Quiz, and its due date. You can also associate your Quiz with an existing topic or create a new one. If you want to add customizable criteria you'll use to evaluate submissions, click "Rubric."

Finally, select the  "Originality Reports"  checkbox if you want to check submissions for possible plagiarism. Note that free Google Classroom accounts are limited to three originality reports per class, though.

Click "Blank Quiz" to customize your quiz in Google Forms.

This opens your quiz in a separate window. All changes you make will save automatically. When you load your first Google Form, you're given a quick tour of the interface.

Click the title field to edit the name of your quiz form, and then type your questions in the questions field. By default, the first question will be set as "Multiple Choice."

To change this, click the drop-down menu on the right. You can then change your questions to short answers, checkboxes, drop-downs, grids, dates, or times. You can also use the sidebar on the right to add or import questions, sections, or files.

After you add all of your questions, close your browser window. Back in the Google Classroom quiz assignment window, click "Assign" at the top right. Select the arrow next to "Assign" if you want to save your quiz as a draft or schedule it for a future date.

When your Quiz is ready, it appears in a list under the Classwork tab of your class. There, you can also see how many students have turned it in. Click "View Assignment" to open a more detailed view.

The Quiz option in Google Classroom is an easy way for students and teachers to engage, as well as assign and complete coursework. You can also use these forms to create surveys, essays, and more.

How to create assignments and quizzes in google classroom.

Keeping your students engaged and learning at home is important to make sure they don’t fall behind. Also, it’s important that your students are familiar with this platform before creating your first assignment. We recommend setting aside time for a class tutorial on Google Classroom before diving in head first. 

How to Create an Assignment

To create an assignment in Google Classroom, follow the steps below:

• Navigate to your Google Classroom. 
• Choose the particular class you’ll be assigning this work to. Then click “Classwork”.
• At the top of the page, you’ll see a button labeled “Create”. Click “Create”. 
• A drop-down menu will appear. Choose “Assignment”. 

From here, you will be able to easily create coursework for your entire class. On this page, you can give your assignment a title and include details that explain how to successfully complete it. You can also easily add attachments (like rubrics, visual aids, and helpful examples) from your Google Drive or desktop that could be helpful to your class. 

Additionally, teachers have the option to post a new assignment to more than one class. To do this, choose “Class” in the upper right-hand corner, and a drop-down menu will appear displaying all of your available classes.

Teachers can also choose to assign tasks only to certain students. Select “All Students”, and a drop-down menu will appear that will allow you to: assign to all students, assign to certain small groups, or assign only to select students. 

Next, before submitting this assignment to your class, add a grade category and choose a point value. To choose a grade category, simply choose either “Test”, “Quiz”, or “Homework” from the grade category drop-down menu. For this example, we chose “Homework”. 

To give your assignment a point value, simply enter a new value in the “Points” drop-down menu on the right hand side of your assignment screen. Please note that all assignments will be set to 100 points by default, so be sure to double check this portion before submitting. 

Finally, teachers should assign a due date for students before giving coursework over to them. In Google Classroom, no assignment will have a due date by default; you must add this. Giving a due date to your assignment is easy: just click the drop-down menu under “Due” in the right hand side of your screen. From here, you can choose a date and time from the calendar that will appear. If students do not turn in their assignment before your chosen date and time, it will automatically be marked “Missing” in your Google Classroom. 

How to Create a Quiz

Creating a quiz in Google Classroom is similar to creating an assignment. Quizzes utilize Google Forms, which makes navigating digital quizzes easy for students. To create a quiz in Google Classroom, follow the steps below:

• A drop-down menu will appear. Choose “Quiz assignment”. 

Once you’ve followed our steps above, you can enter the necessary information for completing this quiz. We also recommend turning on “Lock Mode” so that your students are unable to open additional web pages while taking a quiz. To do this, simply move the toggle labeled “Locked Mode on Chromebooks” to the “On” position. Additionally, you can automatically import your quiz grades to your grade books by moving the toggle labeled “Grade Importing” to the “On” position. 

Teachers can also modify the class or students this quiz is assigned to, the total point value, and due date by following the same steps above for homework assignments.

Assignment or Material in Google Classroom – What is the Difference?

A source of some confusion when developing a course in Google Classroom is whether to post an Assignment or Material. It is important to distinguish between these two options. Keep reading to understand the differences.

In Google Classroom , on the Classwork tab, teachers can schedule posts. These can contain instructions and resources for students participating in the class. There are several choices including Assignment, Quiz assignment, Question, and Material.

Types of Google Classroom Posts

• Assignment: An assignment is a post that requires students to submit work upon completion. You can allocate points to the task or mark it as ungraded. For each person in the class, there is the option to assess the final submission and record the grade and/comments. Assignments are ideal for tracking and evaluating student progress.
• Quiz assignmen t: A quiz assignment ask a series of questions in Google Forms. You can assign points to each question and set the correct answer to automatically grade responses. Create this type of post to construct a test that assesses students’ knowledge of a topic.
• Question: Question is a post that asks either a short answer or multiple choice. You can assign points or leave it ungraded. A response does not automatically grade itself. This means, if your intention is to score the answer, the mark must be manually assigned. This option is best used for a quick review to gauge students’ understanding of a concept or to conduct a poll.
• Material: Material is a post that includes general information about the class or topic of study. This might include a course syllabus, reference sheet, or welcome message. The students read or view the file, web page, or video. Points cannot be assigned, nor can student activity be tracked.

Assignment or Material – Which is the Correct Choice?

To understand whether to pick Assignment or Material ask yourself this question… Do I need to track or grade the task? If yes, then you need to create an Assignment . However, if you only need to share information, then select Material .

Do I need to track or grade the task? If yes, CREATE AN ASSIGNMENT.

An illustration of what is happening in Google Classroom will make the distinction between an Assignment or Material clearer. Refer to the image below. It shows the Grades tab in Google Classroom. The Grades tab is an electronic grading book that organizes Assignments into a table that allows teachers to:

• automatically calculate class average on an assignment
• open a student’s submitted assignment
• record student grade
• identify students whose assignments have not been turned in

IMPORTANT: Material does not show up on the Grades tab.

Assignment Versus Material Features

If you are still uncertain about whether to select Assignment or Material when creating a post consider the features you have available for each choice:

TechnoEarth is a TechnoKids technology project that uses Google Apps to design an interactive infographic. If you were teaching using these instructional materials as a curriculum unit below are some of the resources. Each is labelled as either an Assignment or Material. Use this example to make connections to your own curriculum units:

• Acid Rain Fact Sheet : Material – This is a resource that summarizes facts about acid rain. It is an information sheet in PDF format that can be attached to a Material post. It may assist students with research.
• Research Outline : Assignment – This is a resource that is a template for organizing facts about an environmental topic. Every student needs their own copy. For this reason, it should be attached to an Assignment post.
• Assignment Worksheets 1-18 : Assignment – These are worksheets with instructions on how to complete the task of building an infographic. Some worksheets include questions that students must answer, which means every student needs their own copy. Alternatively, some worksheets require students to submit work for grading. For these reasons, TechnoKids worksheets should be attached to Assignment posts.
• Coral Bleaching Infographic: Assignment – This is an example of a completed infographic – it does convey information. However, this file accompanies a worksheet with questions about the content. Since it is an additional resource that is required to complete a task, it is attached to an Assignment post.
• TechnoEarth Skill Summary: Material – This is a resource that summarizes technology skills. It can provide students with a thorough understanding of what they will learn throughout the curriculum unit. It can be attached to a Material post to provide students with additional information.

How to Create a Quiz Assignment in Google Classroom

Google Classroom is an incredible platform from Google that you can use to deliver courses and teach students, online. The platform lets you share files, create assignments, and communicate with your students, virtually.

The good news is that the platform is completely free to use. So, in this post, I will be showing you how to create a quiz assignment for your students in Google Classroom.

How to Create a Quiz Assignment

1. Open Google Classroom on your account dashboard, click on the ‘ Classwork ‘ tab, and then click ‘ Create ‘ to create a new classroom quiz.

2. From the drop-down menu after clicking the ‘ Create ‘ option, select ‘ Quiz Assignment ‘. Upon clicking that, Google automatically creates a google form to go with the quiz, which by default is titled “ Blank Quiz “.

Other Quiz Setup Options

There’s an option to include a title for your quiz as well as an option to put in instructions or messages for your students.

You also have the option to attach files (anything relating to your quiz) from Google Drive, YouTube, or link to your quiz. So, when your students take the quiz, they’ll be able to see the attached file as a resource to help them during the quiz.

On the right side of your screen, you will see the option to select class, an option to select specific students for the quiz (by default, it is set to ‘ All Student ‘), another option to input the total number of point for the quiz, and another option to set a due date and time.

3. After adding the quiz title, instructions, and other settings, click on the default Google form ( Blank Quiz ) created, and it will take you to Google forms where you can then set your quiz questions.

4. Next, give your ‘blank quiz’ a proper title, and then you can begin setting questions.

5. Select a question type. By default, Google Classroom makes questions ‘ Multiple Choice ‘ questions but you can click to change it to other options like Dropdown, Checkbox, and Short answer questions.

6. To add another question, click the plus (+) icon to the right side of the screen.

Other Things to Note

If you want Google classroom to automatically mark the answers, click on the ‘ Answer Key ‘ option, and then provide the right answer. Also, if you would like to make a question compulsory for students to answer before a submission is possible, toggle-on the ‘ Required ‘ option at the bottom- right corner of the Google form page.

7. Once you’re done with your quiz set up on the Google form, close the page and go back to the quiz assignment page.

Get the Students Busy

You can either give your students access to the quiz assignment immediately by clicking on ‘ Assign ‘ at the top-right corner of the screen or schedule the quiz assignment for a later date. After assigning quiz assignments to students, Google classroom lets you see the number of students/participants that have turned it in. Super seamless and intuitive.

Google Assignments vs. Google Classroom: What’s the difference?

Google Assignments (previously known as Google Course Kit) is a free toolkit by Google to help instructors to easily manage assignments. Whereas the all too familiar Google classroom is a platform to create and manage classes online in a simple way. Although they share a lot of features, there are certain differences between Google Assignments and Google Classroom.

What is the difference between Google Assignments and Google Classroom?

Google Classroom has all the features of Google Assignments but you can’t integrate it  with another LMS. Google Assignments handles Assignment submissions and marking where Google Classroom is a Learning Management System (LMS).

But if you are asking yourself this question, it is probably because you need a little help understanding the need of having Google Assignments. After all, why would you use Google Assignments if all the features are already in Google Classroom?

In this article, we will tell you what’s the purpose of Google Assignments and Google Classroom. We will also tell you how to take advantage of both. But first, let us get you quickly through what is an LMS.

What is an LMS?

A learning management system, or LMS, is a software to manage courses and assignments. It features file sharing, announcements, grading tools, and all the tools a teacher or educational organization needs to run a course online.

Learning Management Systems solve the problems for online course management. While the industry leading LMS products like Moodle and Canvas are robust and feature rich, Google Assignments and Google Classroom solve specific problems only.

Google Assignments vs. Google Classroom

To understand the difference between Google Assignments and Google Classroom we must understand exactly what they are. They both have different approaches to solve online learning management problems.

• Google Assignments can be used on its own or as a toolkit usable in any other LMS for managing assignments and grading them.
• Google Classroom focuses on running full classes online including managing assignments, interacting with students and managing classwork.

If you read the feature list (stated below) of both Google Assignments and Google Classroom, you will see a lot of them are the same. Google Classroom seems to have all the features of Google Assignment. Then how come they are different?

The key differences can be sorted like this:

There are only subtle differences between the products and looking at the features below will help you decide which one will suit your needs.

Google Assignments Features

Here’s a quick intro by Google for Education.

Google Assignments extends the functionality of just sharing files with features like:

• When a student submits a file for the assignment the teacher automatically gets access. Then the student cannot edit the file while it is being evaluated.
• The teacher then evaluates the assignment with a grade and returns it to the student.
• The student then gains access again and can see their mark and the teacher’s comments.
• Google assignment includes an easy grading system where the teacher puts the mark directly in the student assignment.
• Teachers can also use rubrics or marking sheets to measure the assignment more precisely.
• The teacher can point out grammatical errors and little mistakes, mark them and add their comments as well.
• Google Assignments also includes a comment bank to add frequently used comments for easy reuse. As the teacher types, the quick comments will come up as search results.
• Google Assignments handles all the file synchronization with your Google Classroom or LMS automatically. You just add an assignment with just one tap.
• You can schedule the assignment for a later date or post the assignment instantly.
• Google Assignments is compatible with most LMS. So, you don’t have to use Google Classroom but you can still get the Google Assignments features.

Google Classroom Features:

Google Classroom is a Learning Management System with most of the core Industry Standard LMS products.  It still has catching up to do with products like Moodle and Canvas but is getting there.

Have a quick look through the features.

The features of Google Classroom you can use are:

• The ability to create multiple classes with one for each subject you are teaching.
• Easily share the class code to students for them to join the class.
• All the features of Google Assignments previously discussed are already included in Google Classroom.
• Participants in the same class can easily connect with a Google Meet link which is a unique link for each class.
• Stream acts as the social hub for the teachers and the students. The teacher can make announcements in the Stream.

In most cases, they are stored in cloud storage like Google Drive.

Choosing the right one for you

If you are using your own LMS then obviously Google Assignments means you can not only use its features but link to Google Drive as well.  If you don’t have a LMS then Google Classroom is worth looking at in comparison to the other Industry LMS products like Moodle and Canvas.

Google Forms is typically used to create surveys, sign-ups, feedback forms, and more. It also can be used to create quizzes that you can easily incorporate into Google Classroom. There's a variety of question types you can use to make your own quizzes, and they feature an array of customizable settings .

Creating a quiz

To create a quiz, you'll first need to create a basic form. We go over this in greater detail in our lesson on creating simple forms , but we'll cover some of the basics below.

Navigate to the Google Forms homepage , then click the Blank icon.

Before writing questions and answers for your quiz, you'll need to make some changes to the form's settings. Click the Settings  icon in the top-right corner.

Click the Quizzes tab and toggle the Make this a quiz switch. Turning this on will make several quiz options available that allow you to choose how your students will interact with your quiz.

Click the buttons in the interactive below to learn more about the various quiz settings.

Release Grade Immediately

With this option, students will immediately receive their grade upon completion of the quiz. You may want to use this option if your quiz is entirely multiple choice.

Release Grade Later

This option allows you to manually review each quiz before releasing grades to students. This can be helpful for quizzes that feature questions involving a lot of typed responses.

Missed Questions

This allows students to view the questions they missed after completing the quiz.

Correct Answers

This allows students to view the correct answers to questions after receiving their grades.

Point Values

Students will be able to see the total points for the quiz and how many points they earned for each question.

Once you've chosen your desired settings, click Save . You can then name your quiz and start writing your questions. For more information on creating form questions, review our lesson on creating simple forms .

Selecting correct answers for your questions

For each question on your quiz, you'll need to define the correct answers. To do this, click Answer Key .

This screen will appear differently depending on the question type you've chosen. Let's take a look at how to choose correct answers for several popular types of questions:

• Paragraph questions don't offer the ability to add correct answers. Because they're longer and require more analysis, you'll need to read each individually and grade them on your own.

After choosing the correct answers, select how many points you'd like the question to be worth using the points field.

You also have the option of using answer feedback . This gives students feedback on certain questions, depending on whether they chose the correct answer. Click  Add answer feedback and type the messages you'd like to appear for correct or incorrect answers.

Each question has a Required toggle switch. If you want students to answer the question, toggle on Required. A red asterisk will appear next to the quiz question to let them know that it is mandatory. If you want students to have the choice of answering the question, toggle off Required.

Once you're satisfied with the question, you can preview it and give it a try to make sure everything's correct. To do this, simply click the Preview icon in the top-right corner.

Adding sections to your quiz

Depending on the number of questions, you may want to separate your quiz into multiple sections . This will make it so that your questions are broken up across several pages instead of having them all appear on one page.

To do this, simply click the Add section icon in the toolbar on the side.

You can add questions to these sections by following the same instructions listed above. You can also move questions to other sections by dragging and dropping them using the icon shown below.

Adding quizzes to classes

Once you've finished creating your quiz, you'll need to bring it over to your class. Much like how you can attach documents, links, and videos to your assignments, you can attach forms.

When creating an assignment, click the Google Drive icon in the lower-left corner.

Locate and select the quiz you've created, then click Add .

After you've sent the assignment with the quiz attached, your students will be able to complete it. You can access responses the same way you would with any Google Form.

General Information

With Electa Live you can create assignments (homework) and quizzes. Students complete the respective task or quiz and submit their work. Teachers assess the work and accept the assignment.

Assignments can be delivered separately to students or groups of students or can be provided as a part of online courses resources and activities to the course enrolees. For more information about this please refer to Resource Access Permissions Explained .

Assignments vs Quizzes

Assignments are simple or complex tasks (or homework). They consist of a title, description and optionally an attachment. The assignment title is providing basic information about what students need to do. More details about the task are provided in the description area. Optionally, the teacher may attach a file as a part of the task where even more details are provided.

Each assignment has an availability date range - that is - a starting date/time and a deadline until students can work on it.

​An example of a simple assignment can be the following:

Title : Read Chapter Two: The Vanishing Glass from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Description : Complete this task during the weekend. After reading the chapter draw a picture of your favorite part and upload it .

When students complete their task the teacher can give points. Such assignments are called "evaluated" or assessed. For each assignment the teacher specifies what is the maximum number of points students can gain.

Quizzes, similarly to the assignments have a title, description and an availability date range. Quizzes however have a list of questions that has to be answered. Questions can be with one correct answer, multiple correct answers or open questions where students provide a free-form answer.

Each question carries certain number of points. Answers to questions with predefined answers are automatically assessed upon completion. Answers to open questions have to be reviewed by the teacher and assessed manually. Quizzes are always evaluated.

Introduction

Assignments in Classroom are called CourseWork items, which can be found in the Classwork page of any given Classroom course. While there are four Classwork item types, this guide focuses on just the “Assignment” type. If you’d like to learn about how to manage the other Classwork types, read our Manage Classwork guide .

Google Classroom has two ways to integrate with an assignment workflow: Classroom share button and Classroom API . The share button enables users to share content as any stream item through a Classroom popup dialog, whereas the Classroom API enables a beginning-to-end assignment workflow that includes creating assignments, creating and managing student submissions, and grade passback.

Here we will review the key differences between these two developer offerings. More specifically, we will work through the differences in implementation and each phase of the assignment life-cycle: assignment creation, student submissions, and grading/feedback.

Understanding the assignment life cycle

Before moving onto the differences between the share button and CourseWork API, let’s first define what we consider to be the life cycle of an assignment in the context of Classroom. This will help you understand how teachers and students interact with assignments within Classroom.

There are five main steps to keep in mind while integrating with Classroom assignments:

• Assignment is created.
• Assignment is shared with students.
• Student completes the assignment.
• Student submits assignment to teacher.
• Teacher reviews & grades assignments.

Integrating with Classroom assignments allows teachers and students to work between Classroom and third-party applications seamlessly. Instead of managing the details of an assignment or student submissions, users can rely on your application to manage these details for them.

Implementation

The first area of difference between the share button and CourseWork API is implementation . From a developer perspective, the share button is an easier method for sharing content onto Classroom as it only requires including the necessary JavaScript resource and adding a share button tag. In its simplest form, your Classroom share button integration can look like the snippet below:

The CourseWork API, on the other hand, is part of the Google Classroom API REST API, which requires setting up and enabling API keys with Google Cloud console and following best practices for integrating with an API. This is less of a concern if your platform is already leveraging other Classroom API functionality, such as rostering .

Creating & sharing assignments

While both the share button and CourseWork API enable the first two steps of the assignment workflow, creating and sharing the assignment with students, there are some crucial differences you should consider before choosing a solution.

At their core, both solutions enable the ability to post links or files as assignments to Classroom. This serves as a powerful workflow for teachers who would otherwise be forced to engage in a copy and paste workflow between Classroom and the third-party application. While both solutions support the ability to post content as an assignment, you should consider whether your application needs the flexibility of posting this content as other Classwork types, or even an announcement.

Both offerings expose all of the Classroom post types except Quiz Assignments. A summary of all post types and whether they are exposed can be found below.

Functionality such as specifying title and description can also be programmatically specified by your application for both solutions. While the share button integration allows users to set fields such as due date, topic, individualized mode, and number of points within the pop-up dialog, they cannot be set programmatically by a third-party app. The API, on the other hand, exposes all of these fields for both read and write access.

Modifying assignments

Eliminating the need to have users manually sync changing details of their assignments is one of the benefits of integrating with Classroom API. The share button lacks functionality to update or delete assignments programmatically, so any modifications needed would have to be made by the user, through the Classroom UI.

The CourseWork API enables both the ability to modify and delete assignments your application created, as well as the ability to retrieve details of any assignments posted to the user’s courses. It’s important to note, however, that CourseWork items not created by the same developer console cannot be modified by that developer console. This permission model extends to the rest of the assignment life cycle, e.g. managing student submissions and grades, cannot be accessed for these CourseWork items.

Automatically sync assignments

With Pub/Sub push notifications , your application can subscribe to notifications that trigger an event when there are changes in CourseWork items and its associated student submissions. This allows your application to synchronize assignments easily by eliminating the need for continuous checks to see whether content has been updated on Classroom.

Completing & submitting assignments

Each assignment is associated with N student submissions, where N is the number of students the assignment was assigned to. In other words, for each assignment, there is a student submission associated for each student - which can be accessed with a unique ID. These student submissions are automatically created and can be retrieved by your application with the student submissions GET and LIST endpoints.

Both the share button and CourseWork API support adding links or files to a student's submission for an assignment. The share button allows this through a similar workflow as the teacher assignment creation dialog, and the CourseWork API through the studentSubmissions.modifyAttachments endpoint. Because of API permission restrictions detailed earlier, however, this functionality is limited to CourseWork items that your application created. This same restriction does not hold true for the share button — students can add their work to any assignment they select from Classroom.

Ending the student workflow

While the CourseWork permission restriction does not serve a use case for platforms that do not support assignment creation, one benefit is that third-party platforms can prevent students from both submitting to the incorrect assignment and forgetting to turn in their work since only the share button is limited from the ability for students to turn in their assignments.

Reviewing & grading assignments

The last part of the assignment life cycle goes back to the teacher. Once students have successfully turned in their assignment, the teacher can now review the assignment in whatever way makes most sense. In the case of files stored in Drive, they can review directly in the Classroom grader. Third-party applications, however, cannot be accessed in the Classroom grader. The implication of this experience is that teachers must navigate multiple tabs while reviewing and grading assignments.

The share button currently offers no solution for grading and returning assignments. While features such as student submission comments aren’t currently exposed through the API, both grading and returning those grades to students is possible through the studentSubmissions.patch and studentSubmissions.return endpoints. Grades can be specified for CourseWork stream items only (Assignment and Question types). They are only available in numerical form and can be assigned as either a draft or final grade.

Summary of differences

To summarize everything reviewed in the previous sections, the table below shows a side-by-side comparison of the share button and CourseWork API for the four categories discussed above: implementation, creating and sharing assignments, completing and submitting assignments, and reviewing and grading assignments.
