Teaching Kids Healthy Habits

Show your young students an 8 minute video about tooth-healthy snacks for school. This is an edited segment of the 1st grade presentation by our hygienist, Dianne Powers, that focuses on snacks. Many thanks to Karen Robinson and the students in her Londonderry High School TV Production and Radio Broadcasting class!

Healthy Snacks  (8 min)

Oral health is an important part of overall health, and so Children’s Dental Network offers teachers in participating schools the opportunity to have a dental hygienist deliver an oral health presentation to their students. These presentations are available for students in kindergarten through grade 5, and may be offered at various times during the school year. February is National Children's Dental Health Month. That is a wonderful time for teachers to utilize our oral health videos listed below. Thank you to the Salem High School technology department for making these videos possible.

Oral Health Practices for K & Grade 1  (16 min)

Oral Health Practices for Grades 2 & 3  (20 min)

Oral Health Practices for Grades 4 & 5  (20 min)

Our hygienists collaborate with school nurses, secretaries and principals to notify teachers when dates and times are available for their school.

Topics that we cover include the following:

PreK and Kindergarten  Introduction to good dental care: visiting the dentist, brushing technique, flossing and fluoride

Grade 1 Choosing healthy snacks for teeth, proper brushing habits, flossing, fluoride and a unique movie about sealants

Grade 2 and Grade 3 Focused on prevention: review of toothbrushing and flossing techniques, introduction to ADA-approved dental products, importance of daily fluoride exposure, appropriate snacks to maintain good oral and overall health and lastly, a hands-on brushing activity. An interactive true or false game to review optimal dental health; a true test to see how much they have absorbed from previous years!

Grade 4 and Grade 5 A modern Power Point to introduce how oral health is part of overall health. We include information on the effects of sugary beverages and their acid content on teeth and gums. Basic home care is reviewed and students are encouraged to put their best efforts into the responsibility of personal hygiene and healthy habits. Gingivitis is discussed, how cavities develop and how ADA approved products containing fluoride can help keep teeth stronger. A Ted-Ed video wraps up sharing a basic history on what causes cavities and how they have been treated through the years.

A double-sided handout is available for each grade. You can download handouts here.

  • curie.health
  • Good oral hygiene plays a major role on the overall health of the child.
  • Poor oral hygiene leads to a higher risk of dental infections, cavities which might in turn lead to difficulty in eating food and chewing certain types of foods and ultimately indigestion.
  • This is in addition to a possible issue with the speech, lower self-esteem of the child, misalignment of the permanent teeth etc. to name a few.
  • A childs tooth is less mineralised compared to that of an adult and is hence more susceptible to dental cavitation.
  • This combined with the ill effects of a sugary diet and poor oral habits can significantly increase the risk of dental caries in the permanent teeth.
  • Habits such as thumb sucking, mouth breathing or tongue thrusting can further increase the risk of having misaligned permanent teeth.
  • Here are some dental facts and advice based on the age of the child
  • (0-6) years
  • (6-16) years
  • (17-21) years
  • Refer previous blog to read more on this.
  • https//curiedothealth.wordpress.com/2020/03/17/or al-health-and-hygiene-practices-for-babies/
  • All permanent teeth excluding the wisdom teeth will be erupted by this time.
  • Children should be encouraged to brush twice daily using a fluoridated tooth paste, using circular movements of the brush.
  • Flossing between teeth should be made a habit.
  • Newly erupted permanent teeth commonly have very deep pits and fissures and hence filling these with a Sealant by the dentist might be essential to avoid dental caries at a later stage.
  • If your child is having misaligned teeth, the best age to consult a dentist would be around 7 years. Around this age, many issues involving the jaws or jaw orientation can be corrected without surgery. Functional Appliance is the name given to these correctional devices.
  • The 4 (Upper 2 Lower 2) wisdom tooth usually erupts between 7-21 years
  • Wisdom teeth rarely cause too much discomfort when it has enough space to erupt.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth result from a lack of space in the jaw to erupt and hence leads to extreme discomfort and pain depending on the severity.
  • Visit a dentist if you experience extreme pain. Your dentist would suggest an X-Ray to determine the position of your tooth in the jaw and depending on the space available and the chances of it erupting, a minor surgical extraction of the wisdom tooth might be suggested.
  • Failure to remove an impacted wisdom tooth may lead to tumours such as Ameloblastoma later in life.
  • Consult your dentist by booking your appointment on curie.health -https//curie.health/

Preventive Services Program (PSP) Information

PSP is dedicated to improving healthy mouths for all Missouri Children through education and preventive services. The goal of PSP is to screen Missouri Children’s oral health and provide a public health intervention called fluoride varnish.

Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic disease of childhood. Untreated tooth decay can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning. Children who have poor oral health often miss more school and receive lower grades than children who have good oral health. Oral Health is an important part of general health.

The good news is that tooth decay is preventable. Fluoride varnish can prevent about one-third (33%) of cavities in the primary (baby) teeth.

Stellar school presentations

The local school wants you to talk about oral health to students

by Tami Farmer , RDH, CDA

February is National Children's Dental Health Month. This is the month schools across the country focus on raising awareness about the importance of good oral health. This is the month hygienists are either excited about or dreading the inevitable call from a local school requesting a presentation for their students. Presentations do not have to be dreaded though. With a little planning, school presentations can be fun, easy, and something to look forward to each year.

Proper planning is the key element for a successful school presentation. Planning involves knowing the group that the presentation is meant for, picking an appropriate presentation topic, using proper presentation methods to convey the message, and following successful presentation techniques.

------------------------------------------------------------

Consider reading

  • Save those receipts
  • Spicing Up Home Care
  • New gaming app inspires kids to brush teeth

A poor presentation presents a barrier to learning. It is imperative to capture the group's attention and make them want to listen and learn. Following are three basic presentation method formats:

  • Lecture. With a lecture format, a topic with many facts can be presented in a short amount of time. This is great for large groups. With this method, however, it can be hard to monitor if the students are grasping the concepts being introduced to them, because there is no active participation from everyone in the group.
  • Lecture-demonstration. This method is good because the information from the lecture is supplemented by demonstrating skills or techniques. Visual learners absorb more with this method. However, it can be difficult to perform a demonstration to a large group so that everyone can see and hear the demonstration. It is imperative to have adequate facilities for a demonstration.
  • Discussion. This presentation method works well with small groups of older children or teens. Discussion allows active participation and interaction among participants. The presenter can start out by asking questions to begin the group interaction. The presenter must have dynamic social skills to keep the discussion from failing.

A successful presentation is informative and successfully communicates an important message to the students. The students must be motivated to adopt successful behaviors that they can use every day, and to make informed decisions. Without motivation, learning is not achieved. Students learn well through active participation and involvement. This can occur during the presentation or after, if limited by group size or venue. Teachers can be provided with handouts, toothbrushes, activity pages, etc. for the students, to reinforce the presentation objective.

When giving a lecture or demonstration, proper audiovisual materials can help hold a group's attention. Many dental catalogues offer a wide variety of patient education materials. Visual aids include printed materials, pictures, charts, posters, flannel boards, bulletin boards, magnetic boards, models, puppets, mobiles, and computer media. If using audiovisual equipment, make sure the equipment is available in advance and that someone will be present that knows how to operate the equipment.

Sample topics for ages 4-6

Good oral health habits should start at an early age. It is important for presentations to have a positive impact on children and give them a good start on having healthy teeth and gums for a lifetime. With the younger age group, small group presentations work best. It is a good idea not to take questions, or to strictly use the discussion presentation method with this age group. The lecture-demonstration method works well with this group, who enjoys activities and playing games. Many of these children may never have been to a dentist, nor had dental topics presented to them.

Topics and objectives:

  • Brushing (Why should you brush? How often should you brush?)
  • Flossing (Why should you floss? How often should you floss?)
  • Dental visits (What happens at a check-up? How often should you see a dentist?)
  • Cavities (What is a cavity? What happens if I get one? How do I keep from getting one?)
  • Healthy snacking (What foods are good and bad for my teeth?)
  • Teeth (How many teeth do I have? When will I lose baby teeth?)

Demonstrations/activities:

  • Look in children's mouths with disposable mouth mirrors and count teeth.
  • Show a video on the selected topic.
  • Read a book on the selected topic.
  • Show dental tools (mirror, explorer).
  • Put on a lab coat, mask, glasses, and gloves. Explain how they protect from germs.
  • Play-Doh makes a Doctor Drill 'n Fill dental play set for young kids. They can make teeth and pretend to fill them. Consider using something like this for an activity.
  • Use a puppet to show proper brushing/flossing techniques.
  • Have three to five kids stand up, side by side, and use large rope as floss to show proper flossing technique.
  • Show pictures of various foods, or bring various foods, and have children tell if they are a good food or bad food for teeth.

Sample topics for ages 7-12

Children in this age group have been introduced to basic dental concepts already. They are curious about more advanced dental concepts. Many have been to the dentist and had dental treatments. They may be curious about the treatments they have received. A lecture or lecture-demonstration presentation will work well with this age. Visual aids are important to capture the attention of this group. Have pictures or models that demonstrate the topic (sealant model, teeth molds, X-rays) for the children to see, touch, and hold.

  • X-rays (Why do I need them? What do they show?)
  • Sealants (Do they keep you from getting cavities? What do they look like?)
  • Getting numb (Do I have to get a shot? How does it feel being numb?)
  • Fillings (What if I have a cavity and need a filling?)
  • Braces (Do I need braces? What is it like to have braces?)
  • Getting new teeth (How many permanent teeth? When do I lose all my baby teeth?)
  • Dental emergencies (What if I'm playing and have a tooth knocked out?)
  • Mouthguards (Do I need one when playing sports?)

Sample topics for teenagers

This group is interested in topics that affect them directly. A lecture with a large group or lecture and/or discussion with a smaller group work well with this age. This group is also thinking about what they want to do when they graduate and curious about various career options available.

  • Tobacco (Is it dangerous to your mouth? Why?)
  • Oral cancer (What are the signs?)
  • Wisdom teeth (What are they? Do they need to be pulled?)
  • Bleaching (Can I bleach my teeth? How?)
  • Oral health products (Which floss, toothbrush, toothpaste should I use?)
  • Careers in dentistry (How long do you have to go to college? What is the average pay?)
