How to Write an Editor Cover Letter:

A complete guide that highlights the steps you need to take to build a professional editor cover letter.

Address your letter.

Address your letter directly to the hiring manager or senior recruiter..

Address your letter to the publisher, editorial director, hiring manager, or whomever the person is that put out the job posting. Don't use "To whom it may concern." This is not professional. Find out the name of the addressee and use either Mr. or Ms. before the person's name. For example, "Mr. Granger" or "Ms. Enslin."

Start with a brief introduction.

Focus on key attributes that make you the ideal fit..

In no more than three sentences , tell the person why you are writing and what position you are applying for. Use one sentence to state clearly that you feel you are the best fit for the position.

Showcase your qualifications and experience.

Highlight any editor related qualifications..

Write a few sentences on your qualifications and where you studied. Mention how many years you've worked as an editor and where (to keep it short, only mention the most recent or prestigious company). Now, match any requirements mentioned in the job ad with core skills and competencies from your resume, such as excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills; familiarity with design software; and in-depth knowledge of SEO.

Discuss your experience in more depth.

In a few sentences , talk about things you've accomplished, big projects you've coordinated and completed, important tasks and responsibilities you were given, other departments you've worked with, etc. You could include things like receiving an award for best headlines, launching a new publication, etc. Also, briefly discuss what your experience has taught you about your role as editor.

Close your letter.

Celebrate the organization..

Mention two or three things you know about the company you're applying to and why being an editor there appeals to you. State how you will add value to the organization and how you would improve upon or maintain the standards of the company's products.

End with a call to action.

Say that you've attached your resume and portfolio for their consideration and invite the reader to contact you via email or phone call. Thank the reader for their time. Add "sincerely" or an acceptable synonym and sign off with your full name.

The best way to start an Editor cover letter is by directly addressing the hiring manager, if their name is known. Then, introduce yourself and briefly mention your current role or most relevant experience. Make sure to express your interest in the position and the company, and highlight why you are a good fit. For example: "Dear [Hiring Manager's Name], As a seasoned editor with over [number] years of experience in [specific field], I was thrilled to see your job posting for an Editor at [Company's Name]. My expertise in [specific skills or experiences] makes me a strong candidate for this role." This approach shows professionalism and enthusiasm right from the start.

Editors should end a cover letter by summarizing their qualifications, expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity, and inviting further discussion. A strong closing statement might be, "With my extensive editing experience and passion for storytelling, I am confident I can bring valuable contributions to your team. I look forward to the possibility of discussing my qualifications further." Following this, a professional sign-off such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards" should be used, followed by their full name. It's also important to include contact information either after the sign-off or at the top of the letter. This ending is effective as it reiterates the editor's suitability for the role, shows eagerness to be part of the team, and opens the door for further communication, all of which can leave a positive, lasting impression.

An Editor's cover letter should ideally be about one page long. This length is enough to succinctly present your qualifications, experience, and interest in the position without overwhelming the reader. It's important to remember that a cover letter is a professional introduction, not a comprehensive career history. As an editor, you should use this opportunity to demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively and concisely, showcasing your editing skills. Too long of a cover letter may lose the reader's interest, while too short may not provide enough information about your suitability for the role.

Writing a cover letter with no experience as an editor can seem daunting, but it's important to remember that everyone starts somewhere. Here's how you can approach it: 1. Start with a strong introduction: Begin your cover letter by introducing yourself and expressing your interest in the position. Make sure to mention the job title and the company's name. 2. Highlight relevant skills: Even if you don't have direct editing experience, you likely have skills that are relevant to the position. For example, strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are all important for an editor. If you have experience in writing, proofreading, or other related fields, be sure to mention this. 3. Showcase your education: If you have a degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field, this can be a strong selling point. Highlight any relevant coursework or projects that demonstrate your editing and writing skills. 4. Discuss your passion for the industry: Show your enthusiasm for the field of editing. This could be through discussing books, articles, or other forms of media that have inspired you, or by talking about your own personal writing or editing projects. 5. Provide examples: Use specific examples to demonstrate your skills and abilities. For instance, if you've written a thesis or dissertation, you can discuss how you edited and revised your own work. If you've worked in a role where you had to review or create written content, talk about this experience. 6. Show willingness to learn: As you're applying for an entry-level position, employers will be looking for candidates who are eager to learn and grow. Express your willingness to learn and adapt in your cover letter. 7. Close professionally: Thank the hiring manager for considering your application and express your interest in the opportunity to discuss your qualifications further. Remember, your cover letter should be concise, professional, and tailored to the specific job you're applying for. Proofread it carefully to ensure it's free of errors.

Dear Adonia Rudden,

I am writing to express my interest in the Online Editor position at Adobe, as advertised. With a solid background in video editing and content creation, honed over five years at Avid Technology, I am eager to bring my expertise and passion for storytelling to the Adobe Creative Cloud team.

At Avid Technology, I was deeply involved in the post-production process, utilizing Avid Media Composer to its full potential. My role required a keen eye for detail, a strong sense of narrative, and the technical acumen to solve complex editing challenges. I collaborated closely with directors and producers to shape the final product, ensuring that each project was not only visually compelling but also on-brand and on-message.

The transition from Avid Media Composer to Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects excites me. I have always admired Adobe's commitment to innovation and its comprehensive suite of editing tools. I am particularly impressed with the seamless integration across Creative Cloud applications, which I believe will allow for an even more creative and efficient workflow. My experience has equipped me with a deep understanding of editing software mechanics, and I am confident that I can rapidly adapt to the Adobe ecosystem.

I am excited about the opportunity to join Adobe, where I can contribute to the creation of cutting-edge content. Your team's dedication to pushing the boundaries of digital media aligns perfectly with my professional aspirations. I am looking forward to the possibility of discussing how my background, skills, and enthusiasm for video editing can be a match for the innovative projects at Adobe.

Thank you for considering my application. I am looking forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to your team and help achieve Adobe's creative and strategic goals.

Warm regards,

Letters to the Editor: gold fever, taxes, and 1c coins

Bendigo gold. PHOTO: ODT FILES

Gold fever a disease, it needs a proper cure

Help, call a doctor. It looks like Minister Shane Jones has a case of gold fever — once common in these parts but now, thankfully, rarely seen.

The symptoms are extreme excitement and greed causing obsessive thoughts that are not based on reality and the course of the malady results in an increase in wealth for only a tiny minority of cases, the majority ending up worse off. It is of huge concern that the "patient", whilst in the grip of this illness, is being given powers to allow Santana Minerals to go ahead with a gold mine at Bendigo.

Minister Jones has said that mines are good and contribute to the tech revolution that will enable us to decarbonise into the future. If that were so, I would find it hard to argue with him but he is just plain wrong. Researchers from Oxford University and the Colorado School of Mines say "there is enough gold in circulation already to handle global demand tied to technological and trading applications." They also add that "with the energy transition demanding more mined materials like copper and lithium, gold mining stands out as particularly unnecessary."

Recycled gold has 5% of the carbon footprint of mined gold. At a time when we face such uncertainty about the rate of climate change, mined gold has surely become fool’s gold.

So I hope the doctor can give poor Minister Jones a sedative so he can have a long sleep, rid himself of his fevered dreams and wake up to the calm of the 21st century where the knowledge and technology exists to enable us to live in harmony with our planet, if only our leaders could grasp that fact.

[Abridged — length. Ed]

Taxing matters

I find it so strange that a member of Parliament who represented a party (as minister of finance) that held a strong majority in Parliament over the last six years should during his final speech on his retirement state that "New Zealand’s tax system is unfair and unbalanced".

In general, I would think the majority of New Zealanders, particularly those that have favoured his political beliefs would certainly agree with him. Even I do and I certainly do not support the Labour Party.

However I agree we should have some form of a capital gains tax introduced in New Zealand. The question is just what has he (as minister of finance), and his party while they were in power and had the opportunity to do so, done to address this problem. The answer is very little if anything.

I see that Mr Robertson also referred to his modernising the Reserve Bank. I am sure we know just how well the Reserve Bank can be relied on. The country is now in recession and inflation is still not under control. I only hope Mr Robertson displays and acts on his beliefs while he has the opportunity to correct the Otago University’s woes.

Opinions worth little

I would like to comment on the opinion piece by Metiria Stanton Turei ( ODT  22.3.24). In it she fully supports the actions of the Hurricanes women’s rugby team’s politically-inspired haka and the disgusting actions of a schoolboy confronting David Seymour during a school visit by the minister.

An employer pays the Hurricanes women’s rugby team to play rugby, not make political statements which could alienate part of the supporter base. If I pushed my political views on to the clients I deal with, I wouldn’t have a job.

The behaviour of the schoolboy shows that there are more Māori activists in the pipeline ready to keep the racial division pot boiling.

Her statement in the article that "opinions may abound, but they are worth very little" sums up my view on the tripe she promotes.

Not everyone is seen in a 20:20 fashion

Your correspondent Linda March ( ODT  25.3.24) must have struck the hospital's eye department on one of its "better" days.

My spouse had a recent appointment at the outpatient clinic of the same establishment.

As always, she went early in the hope that she might fluke the rare occurrence of a quiet afternoon with everything on time. On checking in, that had been confirmed by the receptionist. Her arrival had been ahead of the appointed time, and to her surprise she had been taken promptly, the initial sight-check, eye pressure test and photograph having been dealt with expediently

There followed, a long wait of more than two and a-quarter hours while other patients came and went; then she had been summoned a second time and put through the same mandatory checks etc, until the person taking the photographs had pointed out that she had "already been done", more than two hours ago. At which point, she had promptly exited the premises in order to catch the next bus home.

The specialist she had been supposed to see, has contacted us and apologised: it seems that a sticker had been carelessly placed covering a check mark which showed that she had already been processed.

The problem had obviously been not with the specialist staff, but at the "clip-board" level.

Bring back the 1c

The first New Zealand coin with King Charles’ visage should be out soon, a 10c coin. This would be a good time to turn the 10c coin to 1c and shift the rest.
