Bachelor & Master Theses

We welcome Bachelor and Master students to write their thesis at the Institute for Marketing and Customer Insight. We generally offer students a choice from a variety of topics for bachelor’s or master’s theses.

Students can find the topics in the list below. If we do not have a suitable topic advertised, a proactive application is possible. Please familiarize yourself with the research areas of our professors and PhD students and address your proposal (see questions below) to the person who best fits your research project. Supervision of topics from outside this list is possible only to a limited extent.

Before you begin, please make sure that you fulfill the following requirements:

  • Make sure you know and comply with the rules and regulations of the Dean’s Advisory Office concerning your specific program.
  • Be ready to start working on your thesis (more than 50% share of work time per week) within the next three months.
  • Be willing and actively plan to complete your thesis within nine months after you’ve started your work.

If you fulfill the above requirements, we invite you to continue with the application process.

What strategic and operational impacts, challenges, and opportunities do the legal adjustments (GDPR, DSG) have on the tracking and monitoring of Swiss and/or EU digital marketing teams?

What strategies can digital marketing teams apply to continue collecting relevant digital user data?

Based on which aspects can the level of marketing agility of marketing teams be identified?

What opportunities and challenges do agile marketing teams face?

How “agile” are Swiss marketing teams?

The market for small donations for NPOs is extremely competitive and hardly growing. However, there is still significant potential in the area of patronage and major donation marketing. In particular, the opportunities offered by digitalization and the individualization of donation marketing have not yet been sufficiently exploited. How can major donors and projects be connected efficiently, trustworthily and on a personal level?

Most exhibition companies use a very conventional pricing structure (usually based on m2). What more innovative options are there – and which trade fair companies are pursuing such approaches (e.g. price differentiation by location, benefit-oriented pricing, success-oriented pricing, etc.)? How could new pricing models be implemented?

Sign-up process:

  • Fill out the form below: This form requires you to write a first draft of your outline. To ensure a successful outcome, we ask you to take enough time to do this and follow our guidelines.
  • Confirmation e-mail: As soon as you submit your details you will receive a confirmation email.
  • Feedback on the Evaluation: You will receive feedback on your outline, including the decision on whether or not we will supervise your thesis. Please bear in mind that we cannot accept all applications since we have limited capacity.
  • Appointment: hould you receive positive feedback: meeting & completion of your outline. As a general rule, “feedback” takes the form of an invitation to a personal appointment with your future supervisor. After this meeting, you will revise and resubmit your outline draft along with your filled-out and signed sign-up sheet (see Dean’s Advisory Office web pages) via email to your supervisor. We will print out your registration form, physically sign it and return it to you so that you can submit it to the Dean’s Advisory Office. On request, this can also be done by email.

As a student at HSG, you have the opportunity to write your bachelor’s- or master’s thesis at CCTT. For this, you will be assigned a contact who guides you through the process of creating an academically relevant thesis. Further, you will have the opportunity to regularly align with Prof. Dr. Winfried Ruigrok, who will serve as the official thesis supervisor.

Teams are modes of organizations. In the future you might wish to work for a Team rather than for a Firm. Teams can have capabilities that individuals cannot possess. Our assumption is that there are synergies among individuals in Teams. At CCTT we are pursuing two research approaches. First, we try to achieve a deeper and grounded understanding of Teams and their Performance. Then we bridge theory and practice to build a normative approach to form and manage teams.

  • At CCTT we define Top Teams as top management teams (TMT), top venture teams (TVT), boards, military teams, sports teams, science and art teams and teams from other areas such as medical teams or movie production teams. Within this broad definition the common characteristic is that the teams we research are top teams.
  • The top of Top Teams has a dual meaning. First from a taxonomical perspective, we look at the hierarchy and at responsibility levels. The apex and the key tasks of the organization, from a strategic value creation perspective, are considered to be the mandate of top teams. The second perspective is high, or top, performance. That is, teams achieving and exceeding the objectives of the high-responsibility task for which they were constituted.
  • A thesis in Top Teams will combine an empirical and a theoretical perspective, on the one hand by discussing the relevant literature, and on the other hand by collecting new data or by interpreting existing data in a novel manner.
  • Actual supervision will take place by a FIM assistant, who is in direct touch with the professor in charge for your thesis at FIM. Students typically have three meetings with a FIM assistant: (1) to discuss and finalise the topic; (2) to discuss the table of content, research model, and methodological approach; and (3) to provide further feedback approximately halfway through the process. For more details about the supervision please contact us.
  • As a rule, the thesis will be written in English. At FIM the working language is English, since most FIM staff originate from outside the German-speaking area.
  • The thesis should have the potential for derivate works, which might be completed and co-authored with the thesis supervisor. Derivate works might include academic papers, practitioner papers or case studies.

Below you can find a list of possible thesis topics within the applicable subject areas:

Top teams: effectiveness & performance expand_less.

  • Synergy/ dis-synergy identification, modelling, quantification
  • Case studies/ anthropological surveys of top teams, performing at the top
  • Specific team synergies derived from team diversity and diverse KSAs (i.e. knowledge, skills, and abilities)
  • Top entrepreneurial teams: value creation associated to specific teamness variables

TOP TEAMS: TEAM PROCESSES & TEAM SPIRIT expand_less

  • Team conflicts
  • Team spirit
  • Emergent states (ex. psychological safety, team trust …)

TOP TEAMS: TEAM CONTEXT & LEADERSHIP expand_less

  • External context
  • Intra-organizational context
  • Intra-team context
  • Highly contextual, rich description/ performance analysis of top teams in a specific industry or domain
  • Roles of the leader/ CEO/ Entrepreneur in affecting Teamness/ Team performance/ Other variable

NORMATIVE MODELS OF TOP TEAMS expand_less

  • A promising and relevant topic will always be one that turns empirical findings and theoretical insights into normative recommendations and models for top teams aiming at high performance

The KMU-HSG and the CFB-HSG invite applications for Bachelor's and Master's thesis topics that either correspond to the research interests of the institute or are brought to us by practice partners.

Teaching and research at the University of St.Gallen emphasises practical relevance. The KMU-HSG is also part of this tradition: Along our «Schwungrad», questions from the areas of executive education and consulting are addressed as part of research projects. At the same time, results and proposed solutions from SME research flow back into teaching and work with practice partners.

In this way, we also see ourselves as mediators between students and companies in dealing with business management issues in SMEs. Here you can see an overview of the current topics on offer:

In addition, please find below an overview of supervisors at our institute. In case of requests for thesis supervision, please contact directly the respective person and thereby take into consideration the instructions and requirements described in the overview.
