Bromcom Student Support

Bromcom logo

This is the student support page for Bromcom. As well as the help and advice here, you will also receive support from staff at school.

Bromcom is the school's MIS (management information system) and is the central piece of software in the day to day running of the school. The ‘ Student Portal ’ is the name of the student view of our published data on both desktop and the app.

Using the Student Portal, you will have easy access to your data anytime and anywhere. A dedicated smartphone app provides the added convenience of allowing access on iPhones and Android .

Some of the things you will be able to access from the start:

  • Your timetable
  • Your homework
  • Your behaviour record
  • Your exam timetable and results

We have not enabled all the features in Bromcom yet, so there may be features mentioned in help guides that you find online that are not visible in your Bromcom. We will publish help guides for all new features and visible data when we enable them.

To get set up on Student Portal, every student must follow the first set of instructions below called 'How do I Sign in for the First Time?'

Q. How do I Sign in for the First Time?

A. Your Bromcom account is linked to your SMRT email. We are using 'Single Sign On' for Bromcom, so after you have carried out the steps below you won't need to enter your details each time.

You will need your phone for this  and be able to receive school emails on that phone. The following instructions contain guidance for setting up the Outlook app in order to receive school emails. If you have an email app already set up to get school emails you don't need to install Outlook.

Instructions

Follow the video or refer to the instructions under the video to complete the process.

Click to watch the Student Portal set up video

  • Download the Student Portal app  from the links below or search in your app store for the Bromcom Student app.

Click for MCAS on the Apple Store

See the sections below for specific help.

You may find the extra space and presentation of homework in the web view preferable to the app.

You don't submit work using Bromcom . Complete and hand in the work as you normally do, whether that's in class or on another platform (Teams, Moodle etc).

If you need to remove a piece of homework from your list ahead of its due date - because you've finished it - then you can 'hide' the homework. Your hidden homework is available to view using the 'Show hidden homework' selector (web view).

Sharples School

  • Home Learning

There is general agreement that Home Learning can clearly be beneficial, but the tasks set need to be manageable and not overwhelming. Sharples School prides itself on knowing its pupils, understanding their concerns and putting their well-being at the centre of everything we do. This approach has informed our approach to Home Learning.

All Home Learning is compulsory and will be shared with students via the Bromcom Student Portal.

Parents/Carers can access details of home learning through the Bromcom My Child At School (MCAS) portal.

The Purpose of Home Learning

  • To develop good learning habits
  • To demonstrate whether the student has understood the work done in class
  • To give the student an extended opportunity to practice work done in class
  • To consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding developed at school
  • To extend school learning e.g. additional reading, research, flipped learning, self quizzing, use of Internet and other resources outside the classroom
  • To manage curriculum tasks and demands such as GCSE assignments and project work.
  • To involve parents and carers in learning and student progression

How long should my child spend on Home Learning?

All Home Learning must have a clear purpose, to develop knowledge. It is essential that both pupils and parents can easily work out what is expected from any particular piece of Home Learning.

Home Learning tasks should not take a pupil longer than 30 minutes to complete for Key Stage 3 and 1 hour for Key Stage 4.

Parents who are concerned that their child is spending more than this amount of time on Home Learning, should feel confident that they can tell their child that they have done enough.

Home Learning should be set at a level which pupils can complete on their own; without the need to ask a parent for help or support. The school does, however, encourage all parents to participate in their child’s home learning and we do encourage pupils to share their learning with their parents.

What does Home Learning look like at Sharples?

KS3 (Year 7,8,9)

English, maths, science, geography, religious studies, history, MFL

The majority of home learning will be based on retrieval practice e.g. quizzes to consolidate key knowledge learned. Each subject will set one home learning task per week. Feedback will be given to students during marking which will be self-marked in class, automatically marked for online quizzes or peer marked in class.

These home learning tasks are very important for;

  • students, to ensure that key knowledge has been committed to their long term memory
  • teachers, to assess misconceptions and knowledge gaps in order to revisit these

Practical Subjects; Art, Performing Arts, Technology, P.E, Computing

Some retrieval practice will also be set in the practical subjects. However there will also be home learning that involves the practice of techniques e.g. in sketchbooks in art, learning lines in Performing Arts. the organising, weighing and measuring of ingredients in Food and Nutrition.

Feedback for Home Learning that involves the practice of techniques will be in the format of what went well (strengths) /even better if (areas for development) which can be both written and verbal. For retrieval practice, feedback will be given to students during marking which will be self-marked in class, automatically marked for online quizzes or peer marked in class.

KS4 (Year 10,11)

All students at KS4 will receive AT LEAST one piece of home learning per subject per week.  In many subjects these will be online, self marking retrieval questions, testing key knowledge learned with immediate feedback to students.

This will allow students to continually revisit key terms and knowledge to ensure that they are knowing and remembering more.

Teachers will use feedback from these quizzes to inform their planning of future teaching and learning.

All students are expected to take part in Additional Learning Sessions (ALS) when these are offered. These take place after school until 4.00pm.

These will begin in Year 10 and increase in number throughout KS4.  This is part of the Sharples Advantage offered by our school.

The Sharples Advantage

The Sharples Advantage highlights all the extra opportunities and enrichment that Sharples School offers its students to further develop the whole student during their time with us.

Advantage Home Learning Opportunities

These are provided by all subjects on our website.  These include reading lists of recommended books and website links.

SAFE, HAPPY, SUCCESSFUL

Homework is an important element of study and creating independence and resilience.  It also enables each individual to further enhance their understanding of the subject.  Tasks will vary depending of the subject and Key Stage, but may include reading, writing, research, revision and project work.

All pupils are given a homework planner at the beginning of the school year and are expected to record their homework clearly in the planner.  This is also used to help the pupils with their own organisation and to facilitate communication between the school and home.

In addition, we have the ‘Student Portal’ through our MIS system, Bromcom.  This enables staff to set homework and provide resources to support the completion of the tasks.  Guidance on how to use the ‘Student Portal’, whether it be through the app or via a desktop, can be found below.

The ‘My Child At School’ app supports this process, enabling parents / carers to view what homework has been set and whether it has been completed, amongst a number of other important functions.

Student Portal Guidance

How can I use the ‘Student Portal’ to support my homework?

  • It compiles all homework and quizzes set digitally by teachers into one place. Homework and quizzes can be submitted and feedback reviewed from here.
  • Like  a digital homework diary, it keeps students organised and aware of any homework and quizzes set.
  • Due dates , submitted homework and late homework are presented to the student.
  • Scores and marks are recorded digitally
  • The  student can view historical homework and submissions.
  • Students  can reinforce their learning by taking self-marking quizzes set by teachers as a learning resource.
  • Various  question types are supported for a varied and flexible learning experience.
  • Analyse  quizzes and homework in the MIS, ensuring homework policies are met.
