An interview essay is designed to give the reader a general impression of the interview subject and to present their thoughts on a select group of topics. There are several formats that fit into the category, but a good interview essay of whatever type can make the reader feel as though they were asking the questions.

Interviewing for an Essay

Step 1 Determine the purpose of your essay.

  • If your essay is to be a factual piece, you'll want to interview someone who has expertise in the subject matter you'll be addressing. If your paper is about a science topic, you'll want to interview a scientist in that field. If your paper is about a period of history, you'll want to interview either a historian or someone who's lived through that period of history.
  • If you plan to make your essay an opinion piece, you'll likely want to interview someone who has a strong opinion about the topic covered in your essay. Ideally, you want someone who can express opinions articulately, and who also has credentials in the area you plan to write about.
  • If your piece will have a narrow perspective, you'll need to interview only one or two people. If your piece will present a general consensus, you'll need to interview more people, probably with varying expertise and credentials.

Step 2 Research your interview subject(s) and draw up questions.

  • When available, read works about and works written by your subject, both in print and online. At the same time, research the topic associated with your subject. The more you know about both, the more intelligent questions you can ask.
  • Look for previous interviews your subject has given, as well. These will give you an idea of what questions the person has been asked before, so you can decide on appropriate subjects for your own questions, including questions that no one else has asked.
  • Questions that require "yes" or "no" answers are good for gathering specific factual information; open-ended "how," "why," and "tell me about" questions are great for gathering additional background material not found in your research.
  • Draw up a list of the questions you are prepared to ask. Have more questions ready than you will likely use, so that you can make adjustments as the interview takes place. (For instance, your subject may begin focusing on what you thought was a side topic, but turns out to be the key part of your interview.) Step 3 Arrange the interview(s).

  • Choose a quiet place with few distractions for your interview site. A library, restaurant, or campus location if you're doing this for a college writing class would be suitable.
  • You may want to get the interviewee's consent to use their comments in your essay in writing, as well as permission to record those comments during the interview.   • Using a recording device (with permission) is almost always advisable, as it permits you to save your note-taking for jotting down your insights on contexts, themes, how your subject approaches the questions, his/her comfort level, and so on.
  • Be patient and respectful as you ask your questions and wait for responses. Give the interviewee time to reflect, and you will likely be rewarded with more insightful answers. A few deeper responses are usually better than many superficial ones.
  • Immediately after the interview, write down your thoughts and impressions about the interview and interviewee. They may help you shape the essay.
  • Always end the interview by thanking the person.

Writing the Essay

Step 1 Decide what format your interview essay will have.

  • Narrative format. This form allows paraphrasing of some information the interviewee says, along with direct quotes for the material you most want to emphasize. This is the most likely format for a class assignment, and offers the most opportunity to add context and analysis.
  • Conversational format. This is a looser format than the formal writing style required for most essays. You can address the reader directly and use both first and second person. This format can be suitable for anything from class assignments to magazine articles.
  • Question-and-answer format. This form presents your questions to the interviewee, followed by the interviewee's responses. (That is, the text looks something like this: (Your Name): How long have you been in the circus? (Interviewee's Name): About 35 years.) These are always direct quotes, although you may insert explanatory material in parentheses and substitutions, such as a person's name in place of a personal pronoun, in brackets. This format is best suited for essays with only a single interviewee or a closely related group, such as spouses or the core cast of a TV show.
  • Informative format. This format usually interweaves the interview with research you've done on the subject, incorporating some of that research in the text to provide background and give it a little more color.

  • Read over your interview notes and listen to any audio / video recordings you have. Utilizing both whenever available will allow you to thoroughly consider both the highlights of the interview and the most significant themes to emerge from it.   • One possible outline could be an introduction that starts with an anecdote about the interviewee and then presents your thesis statement, several key points that support the main focus, and a conclusion that summarizes the information presented. Traditional school essays often utilize a five paragraph format (introduction, three supporting paragraphs, conclusion), and this can often work with interview essays as well.

Step 3 Develop a thesis statement.

  • If, however, the purpose of your essay is to use your interviewee's comments to support a position or examine a larger theme, your thesis will probably be a statement of that position or theme, with the interview / interviewee placed within that context. Preparing for an interview requires more effort than just Googling a list of common interview questions (though, yes, you should 100% be ready for those). In today’s job market, recruiters are flooded with resumes and applications within hours of a post going live, so if you manage to land a meeting, it’s worth putting in the time to ensure you ace it.

Every company has a different process for interviewing potential candidates—and to some degree, that process is unpredictable. For instance, even if you find a ton of sample interview questions for that specific organization, there’s no guarantee you’ll be asked the exact same ones.

The goal of interview prep is to learn and practice as much as possible so you can feel confident and ready for anything (even questions you don’t have an answer to, which we’ll discuss how to handle later on).

1. Research the company

This is first on the list for a reason: It is the single most important step of the interview prep process. You want to research everything about the company from as many sources as you can—including their company profile on The Muse , if they have one! Talk to people in your network to find current and previous employees, read current news stories, and spend time on their website.

“I always tell people to read the company website, including their mission, careers page, and case studies. Then, Google the company to see if they've been in the news recently. If you can ask about those things in an interview, that’s so impressive to the company,” says Erin McGoff, founder of AdviceWithErin .

By looking at multiple sources, you’ll get a broader picture of the organization (along with any negative press), and be ready to talk about why you’d like to work there and what you can do for them.

2. Read the job description carefully

Most organizations use the job description to explain exactly what they're looking for in an applicant—so before your interview, make sure you know said job description almost by heart.

Internalize its key details and try to incorporate them into your answers. “This not only shows that you're well prepared but also that you're a good cultural fit for the company,” says Christian Lovell, of Careers by Chris .

3. Try out the company’s product or service

If the company you’re interviewing with sells a product that you can feasibly check out ahead of time, try it before the interview. For a publisher, purchase a few of their magazines or books and give them a read. If you’re interviewing for a job in retail, engage with some of the goods they sell.

Whatever role you’re applying for, it’s likely that part of your job will be creating value for the people who use that product. So, experiencing it for yourself is a smart move. Plus, it’ll help show the hiring manager that you’re truly interested in the position.

4. Learn about the interviewers

If you can figure out who you’ll be speaking to before the interview, you can do some research on them as well. And if your point of contact doesn’t mention names, it’s totally reasonable to ask for them. Learn about their trajectory at the company and prepare specific questions for them.

During the interview itself, you can ask for details about their role, discuss current events in their field, or bring up a common interest. Just make sure the info you’re referencing is in an easily accessible, public spot, like their company bio or LinkedIn profile, so it doesn’t come off as creepy.

5. Find out the interview type and prepare accordingly

I know how to articulate it and sell it.”

7. Be ready to tell the interviewer about yourself

For every interview, you’ll want to have an answer to the most asked question ever: “ Tell me about yourself .” Your response to this should be tailored to the specific job and company you’re interviewing for, and you should know it by heart.

Interviewers almost always ask this question or a similar one—like “ Walk me through your resume ”—to start off the conversation, so you want to make sure you’re getting started on the right foot.

This is one spot where people tend to ramble, and you want to avoid that at all costs. “Treat interviews like conversations,” says Lovell. “You don’t want to give a one sentence answer and stare at them, but you also don’t want to share your whole life story.”

DeMase recommends using her W.A.T. method—which stands for “What you do, your achievements, and tie it into the role”—to answer the "Tell me about yourself" question. “It boils down to a quick elevator pitch,” she says. “It’s not a whole walkthrough of your resume, and it’s not a walkthrough of your last job.”

8. Know why you’re interested in this position

Hiring managers are looking for people who are passionate about—or at least seem interested in—the role. You will almost certainly be asked “Why are you interested in working here,” or “Why are you interested in this role,” and similar to the above tip, you should have a go-to pitch.

Get specific. What about the role calls to you? And the company? What aspects of the work feel exciting to you? Being able to communicate this succinctly and with a positive attitude will go a long way.

9. Do some salary research

During the first interview, which is typically a phone screen with a recruiter or someone else in HR, you may be asked about your salary expectations . Most experts will advise against giving a hard number, the reason being that you’ll often lowball yourself and providing a specific figure can compromise your negotiating power.

Instead, you could ask about the position's salary range during the interview and then decide if it works for you. But to make an informed decision—that aligns with the market rate for this kind of job—do a bit of salary research ahead of time.

10. Prepare your stories

Most interviewers will ask at least a few behavioral questions , which are questions about how you’ve acted or would act in certain scenarios. It's unlikely to anticipate every possible situation, so prepare a few stories from your past work experiences that could be adapted as needed.

DeMase has another method for answering behavioral questions, known as the “CARE” method —which stands for Context, Action, Result, and Evolution.

“This is the most clutch part of the interview, so you have to be ready with your examples,” she says. “That way, when they ask about a time when your client was difficult, a time you disagreed with your boss, or a time you made a mistake, you have those answers ready and you can tell the story in a way that shows what you learned.”

11. Familiarize yourself with the STAR method

Another helpful acronym is the popular STAR method of answering questions—which stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Whenever you’re answering interview questions with a story, you want to make sure that the narrative is well-structured and the takeaway is clear. Your goal is to give the interviewer all the context needed to understand what happened while still answering the question clearly and concisely.

An example of the STAR method in practice is:

  • Situation: Briefly lay out the scenario using just enough detail to make the interviewer understand the stakes and everything else in your answer;
  • Task: Talk about what was your role in the situation;
  • Action: Discuss what you did and why;
  • Result : Tell your interviewer about the outcome and what you learned.

It’s worth noting that for some questions you might want to tweak this structure slightly. For example, if you’re talking about a time you demonstrated leadership skills , consider defining what leadership means to you before jumping into the situation. But the STAR method will ensure your stories always have a beginning, middle, and end.

13. Or try the PAR method

If the STAR method feels a bit too repetitive in your interviews, Christian Lovell encourages job candidates to try the PAR method—Problem, Action, Result.

“You want things to be as simple and streamlined as possible because everyone has nerves when they're going into an interview,” says Lovell. “Even I still get a little bit nervous!”

The PAR Method breaks down into the following:

  • Problem: What was the problem?
  • Action: What did you do?
  • Result: What was the result?

This is an easy-to-remember structure that succinctly, but completely, answers the interviewer’s question.

14. Jot down any important numbers and details you find

While you’re doing your interview prep, write down some revenue figures, engagement numbers, budget or team sizes, percentages of time saved, or anything else you can use to communicate your impact in previous roles.

Throwing in some hard numbers when discussing responsibilities and accomplishments can show to a hiring manager that you’re good at what you do. Even writing them down on a post-it can serve as a quick reference during the interview.

15. Brush up on your interview skills

How you respond to interview questions is important, but it’s not everything. Hiring managers are also consciously—or subconsciously—picking up on how well you use other skills, such as active listening, small talk, and empathy.

“Recruiters are also looking to see if you're a good fit for the team, and if you are someone that they would want to work with,” says Lovell. “So I tell people to let their personality shine a little bit in their interviews.”

16. Practice—but don’t memorize—your answers

Yes, there are many common interview questions to prepare for, but if you memorize them verbatim, your responses may come out sounding robotic. Instead, jot down a few notes or bullet points and keep them on hand for the interview itself. That way, you’ll ensure to cover the bases without reading from a script.

Also, practice looking in the mirror and answering them out loud. This prep work will help you clarify your thoughts and make you much more comfortable during the interview.

17. Think about body language

While we may think we’re relatively aware of our bodies, it’s a good idea to brush up on what certain body language conveys before an interview. Your posture and stance can communicate a lot—and you want to make sure it’s all positive. (For example, sitting with arms and legs crossed sends a message that you are closed-off or feel defensive.)

Think your movements through ahead of time so you’re not distracted (or distracting) during the interview. If on video, consider how to show active engagement in that format—putting the Zoom window near the camera to avoid looking away from the interviewer, for example, or making non-verbal gestures to indicate that you’re listening without cutting off their microphone.

18. Try some mock interviews

If you have the time, do a few mock interviews with a friend, loved one, or even a career coach. Mock interviews are the best way to practice your tone, body language, and general preparation, plus you’ll become much better at answering, “What would you bring to the position?” This will also allow you to iron out the small details, like where you want to put your hands or how you want to sit.

19. Write down questions you’ll ask them

Most recruiters will wrap up with the interview asking if you have questions for them, and you should absolutely have at least a few prepared. “I recommend three to five questions—ideally five, in case they answer some of your questions during the interview,” says McGoff.

You can start with this list of interview questions to ask , but you should also plan some additional questions. “Make them really specific to the role and company,” McGoff adds. “If they had a merger recently, ask how that’s affected the culture. You could ask them what workflow systems they use or how they measure performance. Act like it’s your first day on the job, and think about what questions you would have.”

Also, be sure to ask questions you actually want the answers to. “A big mistake is trying to ask questions that you think the interviewer wants to hear. How can you use that final parting moment as a way to make yourself stand out? Rather than asking a question aimed at trying to seem like the smartest person on earth, I'd recommend showing that you're a curious person who genuinely wants to learn more about a certain area of the company," says Natalie Marie, of Corporate Natalie .

20. Plan for what you’ll do if you’re caught off-guard

You can’t prepare for everything, but you can prepare to handle the unexpected—like an interview question you don’t know how to answer . Most experts say to keep your cool and not be afraid to take a moment to think.

“Take a moment to think and embrace silence. It’s OK to think and even repeat the question out loud,” McGoff says. “You can take a sip of water, or say ‘that’s a great question, let me think about that for a second.’ If you’ve blanked on the answer, you can even ask to come back to it. If they’re professional, they should be totally fine with that.”

21. Prepare for technical interviews or skill tests

If you’re getting ready for a technical interview or you’ve been told there will be a skill test, start preparing as early as possible. Working through a prep book or sample questions will not only provide good practice but also put you in the right problem-solving mindset.

Once you’ve prepped for the content of your interview, it’s time to make sure you walk in looking put together and feeling confident.

22. Figure out what to wear

Unless you’re prepping for a phone interview, you’ll need to take your physical appearance into account. “It’s really important to plan what your outfit is going to be, and you want to make sure it’s professional and clean,” McGoff says.

If you aren’t sure what to wear, you can check out a company’s social media or their Muse profile to see how employees typically dress. Generally, it's recommended to present yourself a bit more professionally than on a typical workday. For example, for a casual environment, business casual is appropriate for an interview.

23. Look appropriate and professional

When it comes to appearance, the smallest details can make the biggest difference. Ensure your outfit is cleaned, ironed or steamed, and tailored if needed. Polish shoes, check for loose hems, and make sure your fingernails look neat.

Do a little pampering, because looking your best helps you feel your best—and that may mean needing a haircut, shave, or even a new interview outfit. Remember: Confidence in yourself is key to landing a job.

24. Print out copies of your resume

For in-person interviews, bring at least enough copies of your resume for everyone you’re meeting with, plus one. (It never hurts to have a few extra copies, just in case.) However, if you have a phone or video interview it can still be useful to print out a hard copy of your resume so you can refer back to it.

25. Prepare a reference list

It’s always smart to prepare a reference list before your interview, whether asked for it or not. For each reference, include a name, title, organization, division or department, telephone number, and email address, as well as a sentence briefly explaining the relationship (e.g., “Carlton was my team leader for two years, during which we collaborated on four major product launches”).

For an in-person interview, print out a hard copy, and for any later-round interview, make sure you’re ready to send off the file as soon as asked for it.

26. Test any needed tech

For Zoom and phone interviews, make sure that all the needed hardware, software, and network connections are working as expected. If you can use headphones with a microphone, do so, and ensure they’re connected before the interview begins.

“A bad WiFi connection or a distracting background can really hurt your chances, so test that ahead of time,” says McGoff.

27. Pack your bag in advance

Whatever purse, backpack, or briefcase you carry should be large enough to hold your everyday essentials, plus interview musts, such as extra resumes and a notepad. We recommend packing a small emergency kit for unexpected situations (think: Band-Aids, a stain stick, an umbrella, and breath mints).

Here’s a general checklist of what to bring to an interview so you’re super prepared. And clean out that bag! If you have to dig past candy wrappers, phone chargers, and old receipts to get that resume, you’re going to look a little disorganized.

28. Plan how you’re getting there

Whether driving or taking public transportation, look up your route ahead of time (including parking if necessary). Buy any needed tickets, add money to your metro card, fill up your gas tank—take care of anything that could slow you down on the way to the interview.

Know how long it should take you to get there and add plenty of extra time for potential traffic or transit delays. And above all, make sure to confirm the location with your point of contact, in case there are multiple offices in the same city.

29. Prepare your environment

For remote interviews, ensure your environment is quiet and free of distractions. Lay out anything you'll need to reference during the interview in front of you, along with a notepad, working pen, and beverage.

“You want a good location that is quiet with a strong WiFi connection and good lighting,” says McGoff. For video interviews, you’ll also need to pay attention to what’s going on behind you, so choose a plain or non-distracting background to sit in front of and make sure your shot is free of clutter and well lit ahead of time.

30. Fill in an interview cheat sheet

Remember study guides in school? An interview cheat sheet is sort of the same. It's a way to compile all the details you want to remember, jot down notes about what you want to say and ask, and check off all the essentials for the meeting. Print one out for every interview, read it over the morning of, and you’ll be good to go!

31. Get a good night’s sleep

Don’t underestimate the power of a good night of sleep—and likewise, don’t underestimate how much a bad night’s sleep can impact you. Sleep plays a key role in memory retention and attention span, so you want to clock at least seven to eight hours the night before a big interview. Start winding down for bed earlier than usual, and pack everything so you’re ready to go in the morning.

32. Calm your nerves and/or get psyched

Immediately before the interview (or as close to the moment as possible), get yourself in the right headspace. Expect to be nervous and plan ahead of time to use whatever tools you need. These methods are different for everyone, so think through what will be most beneficial and effective for you.

Perhaps you need to do some breathing exercises or give yourself a pep talk in your car. Whatever helps you get prepared to go into the interview confident, calm, positive, and ready to ace it.

“I tell people to put on their favorite song,” says DeMase. “Play it through your headphones and crank up the volume—this will help you get into the mindset. You want a song that makes you feel good and confident, that will hype you up before the interview. You can read your notes before going in, but you don’t want to be stuck in your head.”

  • Arrive early to set up any equipment and settle in. Test your recorder.

The project had a rocky start as the client team was initially resistant to change. However, Alex was able to build strong relationships and credibility over time. One of the most effective ways to prepare for a job interview is practicing your answers to common interview questions. There are many factors to consider when getting ready for an interview , but the words you use and how you structure your answers are important.

In this article, we explore why job interview practice is important and how to prepare for some of the most common interview questions.

Why Interview Practice Is Important

Before we get into details about some of the most common interview questions, here are some quick reasons why practicing for a job interview can be helpful:

  • Practicing your answers will help you feel more comfortable talking about yourself. Not all of us are naturally gifted when speaking at length about our career accomplishments. As you practice, you will start to sound - and feel - more comfortable. This is one of the few times in life when you’re expected to brag, and practicing your answers ahead of time can make it feel less awkward.
  • You will already have an idea of the main points to cover. It’s smart to go into an interview with a list of your best talking points ready to go. Having that list memorized will help you present yourself in the best possible way. One note of caution: don’t force your main points into an answer if they don’t address the question directly. You’ll likely have a few minutes at the end of the interview to summarize, so you can save your best selling points for that time, if needed.
  • Practicing out loud helps you decide which words to use. If you’re going back-and-forth about how to describe something, practice it by saying the words out loud. After hearing the words spoken, rather than reading them on a notepad or a computer screen, you may decide to go in a different direction. Using words that are a natural part of your everyday language will help you sound more confident.

Preparing for Common Interview Questions

In the section below, we’ve included some practice interview questions that are likely to come up in any industry.

“Tell me about yourself.”

Many interviews start with some variation of an open-ended statement like “Tell me about yourself.” Make sure to spend some time preparing this opening statement, as it will set the tone for the rest of your answers.

Your goal for this statement is to summarize your career, not to tell your life story. Don’t go into too much detail, as you’ll have opportunities for that later in the interview. Plainly state how the experience and skills you’ve gained in the past have prepared you to succeed in this position in the future.

Also, be careful not to stray too far from the requirements of the position to which you’re applying. You may have a varied background in a lot of industries, and those are all certainly a part of your career story, but try to stay on track by focusing on the connections between your previous work and what the employer is seeking for the position.

Finally, avoid bringing up personal information. There may be appropriate times to talk about your family or your interests outside of work, but those will likely come much later.

“What are your strengths and weaknesses?”

When interviewing, you will likely be asked to identify your strengths and weaknesses . Describing your strengths is an opportunity to return to the main points you want to hit on about why you’re a strong fit for the position. Talk about your natural abilities, the skills you’ve developed, and the wisdom you’ve gained from previous experience. These can all be considered strengths.

Discussing your strengths is also an excellent opportunity to use examples. It’s one thing to claim that you are a strong salesman, but it’s another to bring up specific sales numbers and describe how you improved upon the work that was done at your organization before you arrived.

When discussing your weaknesses, be honest. Don’t fall into the trap of using clichés like “I work too hard.” After stating your weaknesses, describe what you’re doing to improve. Maybe you’re starting to use new tools to help you stay organized, or maybe you’re reading books to help you develop your skills as a manager. Be prepared to talk about how you’re trying to get better.

Behavior-Based Questions

Most interviewers will also ask behavior-based questions . Answers to these kinds of questions can be helpful to a hiring manager because past behaviors can be good indicators for future performance.

Here are some examples of behavior-based questions often asked in job interviews:

  • Describe a time when you were faced with a stressful situation at work. How did you overcome the situation?
  • What’s an example of a goal that you set, and what did you do to accomplish it?
  • Provide an example of a time when you had a problem with a co-worker or supervisor. How did you resolve the situation?

In many cases, interviewers are expecting candidates to use their answers to describe their soft skills like teamwork, communication, conflict management, leadership and more. These are qualities that are difficult to express in a resume, but an interview is a perfect time to try.

When preparing your answers, one popular method for how to structure them is the STAR method . The acronym STAR stands for situation, task, action, result. Remembering these four words when answering a behavior-based question can help you ensure that you’re answering it as completely as possible.

One of the most common -- and valuable -- pieces of advice offered to academics on the job market is to thoroughly research the department and institution before going to a campus interview. But college websites are often complex and difficult to navigate, containing much more information than an interviewee could or should consume in the minimal time before an interview. What information should job candidates be looking for as they prepare for campus interviews? Where should they look to find it?

An obvious starting point is to learn what you can about the department chair and other search committee members. Knowing a bit about each of the faculty members you interview with will make it easier to forge connections and avoid unintentionally saying the wrong things. Don’t stop at checking faculty pages housed within the department website: you should also do a web search for your interviewers (just as they will likely search the web for you). Browse any personal webpages faculty may have independent of the institution. If their CVs or syllabi are available online, read them. Note their research interests, teaching approaches, texts and assignments used in their courses, and the types of departmental and college service they are involved in. Remember that what you are getting here are not only snapshots of your interviewers, but also of the department and institution they work for.

Another useful thing to pay attention to as you research your prospective employer is the department website, particularly the curricular, pedagogical and ideological language used -- and not used -- on the department homepage and within course and program descriptions. Such language can offer clues on how to talk about research and teaching during your interview. In my own discipline of English, for example, terms such as “remedial writing” or “basic writing” are commonly used by some academics and ardently avoided by others. If possible, you’ll want to have some sense of your interviewers’ views on key issues in your field before you go in for an interview -- as well as how you’ll respond if asked to discuss a topic in your field that can be divisive or controversial.

You should also review available information on courses you can expect to teach if you get the job. Read the course descriptions, note and familiarize yourself with any required course texts, and, if available, download and examine syllabi or assignments. You can also do a web search for specific courses in addition to looking at what’s available on the department website; you may find course syllabi posted elsewhere on the web, and some courses have publicly viewable class blogs or websites. Such pages offer a glimpse of the type of work instructors assign and the skill level of students in the courses you may teach.

In addition to researching the search committee and department, it’s worth trying to get a sense of the bigger picture of the institution as a whole, especially if your campus visit will include an interview with an administrator. Pay attention to what is featured on the institution’s home page: these are usually the high-profile, most current initiatives and activities occurring on campus, ones that the institution’s faculty and administrators are likely to be particularly proud of and invested in. Try to read up on at least one campus initiative or activity outside of your own discipline that you can envision yourself becoming involved in as a new faculty member.

For teaching-oriented positions, especially, it’s also important to take some time to learn about the individuals you will work most closely with on a daily basis if you are hired: the students. Start by reading the institution’s pages on students and student demographics: What languages do students speak? What racial and ethnic backgrounds do students come from? How many international students are on campus? What types of academic and economic backgrounds are students coming from? What degrees and career paths are they pursuing?

These are not mere statistics, but questions that should inform the way you talk about teaching during your interview. You can also get some sense of what student life is like by browsing pages that list student clubs and activities such as sports, student government and Greek life. Learning about what students are interested in, academically and otherwise, can prove surprisingly useful while talking about teaching during an interview.

For any interview, but especially one for a community college position, it is also worth learning a bit about the larger community in which the campus is situated. Especially if you’ve never been there before, do some research to help you gain some demographic and historical knowledge about the county or city where the campus is located. Candidates who are clueless about the community and culture that surround the campus are more likely to say the wrong thing in an interview or even in a casual conversation over lunch or drinks. Faculty members who are devoted to and proud of the larger community in which they live and work may find it quite off-putting if a candidate makes stereotypical or clichéd comments about the area.

Finally, in any situation where you can explore the campus physically as well as virtually, take the opportunity to do so. If you live close enough to visit the school prior to your interview, do it, even if it means a two-hour drive or train ride. Spend some time on campus -- talk to students, chat with faculty, visit the library -- and familiarize yourself with the area surrounding the school. Do as much as you can to get a feel for the academic and local cultures of which you may soon be a part, and you will find that you can more successfully give the impression that you will fit in there.

Communication is one of the most important tools of in the normal running of business.

Scholars define communication as any act that include an individual delivering or receiving information as regard to personal needs, wishes, awareness or comprehension. Furthermore, communication could perhaps be intentional or unintentional, may utilize conservative or eccentric signals or may take linguistic or non-linguistic forms.

It is observed that communication is a form of dialogue but not a monologue meaning that it is concerned about twofold listening.

Business communication is commonly utilized to pass information within and without the organization (Krizan 21).

Messages can be conveyed through several channels such as the internet, print, data lines, TV, outdoors and verbal.

Communication can take the form of upward, downward or horizontal way depending on the seniority of the speaker and the recipient.

Messages such as bad news, good news and routine request messages are frequently conveyed from one office to another through upward, downward and horizontal communication.

Business Communication

There are instances when an individual would need to deliver bad news.

To deliver such news, the sender should be equipped with some strategies since the recipient would most likely be upset. In this regard, it is advisable that the speaker employs inductive approach in dealing with the emotional state of the receiver (Clow 35).

The business administrator may perhaps be called upon to draft a message that instructs the supplier to forfeit supply of merchandise, denying credit to potential customers or conveying constructive criticism to employees. In this scenario, an administrator is required to adopt some steps in writing the message.

The first step would be to introduce the topic with an idea that seems neutral. This would set the stage for explanation of an idea, which should be presented in succinct and reasonable style. The language used should be positive.

This would involve providing a counterproposal or silver liming testimonial that seems positive. Finally, the writer can close the message by encouraging and chivalrous quotes that diverts the attention of the reader from bad news.

In this case, bad news is articulated using paper documents or face-to-face means. However, electronic channels can also be employed in circulating bad news.

Bad News

Good news messages are those that convey positive information to the respondent. In other words, the message carries information that would be of pleasure to the recipient. It broadcasts good news to the receiver (Rankin 78). This type of message is easy to write as opposed to bad news message.

In designing good news message, some factors are to be considered, which would make the message formal and effective. First, it should have friendly, understandable and comprehensive tone. Besides this, the appearance of the message should be suitable.

The message should have three components that make it complete and more reliable. The statement of the main idea should be clear because the main purpose of the message is to express an idea.

Secondly, the message should have needed details that back the main idea. It should not leave out any substantial idea. On the other hand, the message should not have irrelevant information.

Finally, the writer should conclude the message pleasantly.

Good News

Routine request messages are those types of messages that are utilized for various purposes. They are used in requesting for action, modification and passage of information.

In the main body of the message, the writer should include an explanation regarding the request. The writer should utilize this opportunity to show the reader that the message is beneficial to him or her.

The message can actually be broken to small sub-topics in order to allow the reader understand the request. Details should be provided in case the request is complex.

Finally, the request message should conclude with a positive and courteous quote that encourages the reader to reply.

Routine Request Messages

An interview refers to an investigative meeting that happens between an applicant or applicants and the employer; thus, representing both the supply and demand of an organization.

Regardless of whether an individual is applying for a scholarship or a job, it is necessary to conduct an interview in order to determine whether he/she qualifies for the applied position (Lee & Thill 2).

Both the interviewee and the interviewer need to prepare properly before an interview.

Interviews are very important to the interviewees; therefore, they should spend time in preparation before attending them.

In addition, job interviews are very important to employers because they help them in choosing the best candidate that suits the organization’s position (McKay 2).

Interviewers carry out interviews for many reasons including getting the interviewee’s impression relating to his/her image obtained in the application documents and those that he/she did not write.

Therefore, the interviewee should conduct research regarding the company that he/she has an interview.

This information should include what the company deals with and its success.

Aspects such as corporate culture and how the communities view the corporate culture, their market position, the role played by the position being interviewed and relevant information concerning a normal day in the company are fundamental (Boyer 48).

Secondly, the interviewee should ensure that he/she re-reads the job advertisements severally in order to clearly understand the job requirements and think out the main reasons to prove whether he/she can meet such requirements.

The interviewer should not exaggerate things during an interview because it will appear as if he/she is overqualified. Similarly, the interviewer should not lie during an interview because the information will appear to be paranoid.

Finally, the interviewee should revise and memorize all information concerning his or her CV so that incase the interviewer asks questions in line with the CV, the interviewee is capable of answering them deeply thus giving relevant details and explanations.

In addition this, the interviewee should list down all his/her strengths, accomplishments, experiences, hobbies, and weakness among others so that he/she can easily recall them during an interview (Adams Media 18).

How to Prepare for an Interview

To any company, a job interview is very relevant because it helps the company in obtaining the best candidate suiting the available company’s position.

In preparation for a job interview, it is important that an individual conduct more research regarding the organization that she/he has an interview.

Secondly, an interviewee should ensure that she severally reads the requirements of the applied job in order to get answers on how he/she meets such requirements.

Thirdly, an interviewee should investigate on the total time that the interview will take.

Fourthly, revising common interview questions is vital.

Finally, the interviewee should memorize his/her CV in according to answer questions in line with it.

However, it is important for every individual to consider well preparation before an interview.

If you think most hiring decisions are based on your experience and qualifications, then you better keep reading. Your resume gets you in the door, but how you interview determines whether you’re offered the job.

This article will teach you proven job interview tips to help you pass a job interview and get the job you want. Here’s what we’re going to cover:

  • Part I: Job Interview Preparation Tips – everything to do before your interview
  • Part II: Interviewing Tips – the best strategies to use during your interview to stand out
  • Part III: Tips for After Your Interview – how to make sure you get the job offer after your interview is over

These are the best interview tips that I know, from close to 5 years working as a Recruiter .

After you finish this article, you’ll know how to stand out from other job seekers and pass a job interview a majority of the time.

Part I: Job Interview Preparation

Each step below will prepare you for the actual interview. None of this is very time consuming but it will set you apart from everyone else applying for the job, making it easy for the company to decide who to hire (you!)

Here are the basic interview preparation steps to remember. I’ve put the estimated time next to each one.

1. Research the company (10 minutes)

Interviewers can tell when you’ve  done your research , and they love seeing it. And if you haven’t… it looks really bad, especially at the start of the interview when they ask things like:

  • Why did you apply for this position?
  • What do you know about us?
  • Why do you want this particular job?

So the start of the interview is your chance to make a great first impression. Walking in with zero knowledge of their business is one of the fastest ways to shoot yourself in the foot and NOT get hired .

It could even lead to them ending the interview early. That’s one of the biggest  signs your interview went badly , and you definitely want to avoid that (for example if you were told it would be a one-hour interview, and you finish in 25 minutes).

So be ready to show them that you what they do, how they make money, who their typical customer or client is, etc. You’re not expected to be an expert on their business, but know the basics. 

You can do this company research on the company’s website, on their social media pages, and by searching Google. I also recommend finding one or two recent news stories to see what the company has done recently. To learn the latest on a company, try typing the company’s name plus the word “news” into your search bar.

2. Think of two reasons you’re interested in the company (10 minutes)

Use the company research you’ve done to come up with a business-related reason you’re excited about them. It could be a new business model, new clients, new partnership, etc.

Actual example: I recently had a phone interview with a tech company that was built as a review/info website. They recently started handling transactions instead of sending the buyers out to other websites to complete the transaction. I read this in the news and mentioned it as an exciting development and a really good business move. The interviewer was extremely impressed that I had read the news, and understood the implications.  Total time spent researching: less than 3 minutes.

Along with one business reason, try to come up with a secondary reason too. Maybe community involvement. Or company culture . Almost every company has a blurb about their culture on the website. Read it and mention what you read as a secondary reason for being interested.

You’ll seem extremely well-prepared and well-rounded for having two very different reasons.

3. Think of an explanation for why you’re job searching (5 minutes)

Companies will often choose someone less talented if they also seem less risky or if their motivations make more sense. I’ve seen it first-hand.

Don’t lose out on a job to somebody with less skill than you. Prepare some legitimate reasons why you want to make a move ( without talking negatively about your current employer ). Here are some examples:

  • You’ve accomplished ____ in your current role and you’re ready for a new challenge
  • Your company’s direction has shifted and you feel it’s time to join a new organization
  • You’re interested in a different type of product/service
  • You’re looking for a larger or smaller organization

You can get more specific based on your situation. These are general ideas. If you do a good job with this you can beat out applicants that have more experience than yourself, because they’re not using these strategies most likely.

4. Prepare to talk about specific accomplishments

Most people go into their interview and make general statements and talk in very general terms. To set yourself apart, you want to prepare specific examples and talk about DETAILS. Facts, numbers and real accomplishments.

Hint: this is true on  your resume  also. You’ll get far more interviews if you cram your resume with facts, figures and statistics instead of general statements like “responsible for handling customer requests”.

So when the hiring manager asks what you accomplished in your last job, or what you do each day, you should be ready to impress! This is not the time to hesitate or be unsure. Prepare ahead of time for this.

If you’re looking for your first job without any work experience, then think about accomplishments in your academic career – classes you’ve taken, projects you’ve completed, etc. That’s your most relevant experience!

5. Get familiar with your resume (5 minutes)

This is one of the more important interview preparation tips, and one of the easiest. Glance over your resume if you haven’t in a while. Be ready to explain past job changes in a positive light. If you left a job because your manager was horrible, say that you went to an organization that had more supportive management. It’s all about how you phrase it. We’ll look at more examples of how to deliver this in Part II coming up.

Also think of a couple of challenges and accomplishments in your last 1-2 positions. Interviewers love specific examples of accomplishments.

That’s it, you’re done with Part I. At this point you’ve already done more than 80% of job applicants, and you have good answers prepared for some of the most common interview questions . Let’s move on…

Part II: Job Interview Tips

So, you’ve mentally prepared yourself with the interviewing tips from Part I. Now let’s talk about how to pass a job interview after it begins.

1. Prepare to describe your work history BRIEFLY

Most interviewers will ask you to give a quick walkthrough of your background at the start of the interview. That’s why I mentioned reviewing your resume beforehand. This pre-interview step is commonly overlooked but it’s one of my favorite job interview tips and is so easy to do!

If you’ve prepared a good, brief narrative of your career, you can impress them right off the bat. What got you interested in this field? What have you accomplished recently?

But it has to be concise. Nobody wants to hire somebody that rambles on or sounds scattered, and that’s the biggest mistake people make with this relatively open-ended question.

Spend most of your time on the recent portion of your career. Go through the beginning rather quickly. 2-3 minutes total should be your target.

2. Explain why you’re interested in interviewing with them

After walking them through your resume, you’ll probably be asked why you’re looking to make a job change, and/or why you’re interested in their company in particular. This is where the research you’ve done pays off. You should already have two specific reasons for wanting to interview with their company.

When explaining your reason for job searching in general, I mentioned one example of how to turn a negative into a positive in Part I. Here are 2 more examples:

If your current company has no room for upward growth, say that you’re looking for a job with more room for upward growth. If you don’t like your coworkers, say you’re hoping to find a team that’s more collaborative. See the difference? You’re saying the same thing without sounding negative.

Whatever you say you’re looking for, be prepared for them to ask why you can’t get that in your current company. Just answer by saying that you don’t think there’s an opportunity to get this, and that you considered this before starting to look externally. Simple and easy. That should end the line of questioning.

3. Answering technical questions- don’t freak out

After the basic questions, you’ll get into the meat of the interview. The content and questions here will vary based on the job, but here’s what you need to know about how to pass the job interview:

A good interviewer will test your limits. Especially if it’s a position involving some type of technical knowledge (math, science, engineering, etc). The only way they can find your limits is if they ask something you don’t know. So stay calm when you get this. Here’s what to do:

Try to work your way through the question as much as you can. Your thought process is often more important than answering correctly, so tell them what you’re thinking. Ask questions to clarify if needed.

Seeming genuine, thoughtful and honest can go a long way. It’s more important than answering any one question correctly.

Preparing yourself for how you’ll handle a question you’re not sure of or didn’t expect is an important piece of how to pass an interview. You can prepare for questions all day, but you still might hear something you weren’t ready for.

4. Ask your own questions at the end

You should ask a lot of questions after the interviewer has finished their own questions. How are you going to decide if you want the job if you don’t find out any info? The best job candidates are evaluating a company, not just trying to get a job in the first company that wants them. Once a company realizes this, they’ll treat you like a top-notch candidate and try to sway you to join them.

If you aren’t sure what to ask, here’s a mega-list of the best questions to ask .

And here are  5 great questions to ask recruiters  in particular (this is for  phone interviews  or first conversations with any recruiter ).

Use these lists to come up with questions to ask each person you’ll be meeting. If you interview with 4 people, you should ask questions to all of them. It’s okay to repeat a question, but don’t tell the last person, “so-and-so already answered all my questions.” I’ve done this in the past and wasn’t offered the job. Lesson learned.

Some of the best questions are opinion-based questions because you can ask the exact same question to as many people as you want. Example: “What’s your favorite part about working here? What is the biggest challenge/difficulty you face here?”

5. Always act like you want the job

You have one goal in any interview: Convince them that you’re the best candidate for the job and get invited to the next round.

So you should be selling yourself in the interview, not deciding if the job is desirable.

Then you can go digest the info and make a decision once you get home . If you start using this approach you’ll have a big advantage throughout the entire interview because you’ll have one single thing to focus on. Other applicants will be juggling everything at once.

6. Don’t ask for feedback on the spot

I’ve seen people recommend that you ask for feedback or concerns at the end of the interview. Something like this: “Based on what we’ve discussed, is there any reason you wouldn’t consider me for this job?” Horrible advice. Never ask this. Ever. Or anything like it.

First of all, they just finished interviewing you. Give them time to think. You’re going to go home and decide whether you’re interested, they need time to think too. Don’t put them on the spot like this.

Also, you’re bringing the negatives to their attention. You’re literally asking them if they can think of a reason that’d stop them from hiring you. Even if they do think of something, they won’t tell you for fear of a lawsuit.

I like to say something like this instead: “If you need any more info from me or have any questions later, don’t hesitate to contact me.”

7. Be human

You don’t need to seem perfect in the interview to get hired. Don’t try. Be human.

If you seem fake, or if you try too hard to give “perfect” answers, the hiring manager might not be able to get a real sense of what your strengths and weaknesses are. And if they can’t tell, they won’t hire you.

So, don’t go in with interview answers you read from the top of Google. If you found those in 5 minutes, everyone else did too. Come up with great answers that are unique.

Remember that it’s also okay to occasionally say, “I’m not sure”, or “Sorry, I’m drawing a total blank”. (This is okay once or twice per interview. If you find yourself doing it more, it’s a sign you didn’t prepare enough).

8. Learn the interviewer’s name and use it

I’m horrible at remembering names. I always have been. So if I can do this, you can too…

When you hear someone’s name, repeat it to yourself in your head once or twice IMMEDIATELY after you shake hands. This helps you remember it.

Most of the time, if you forget someone’s name, it’s because you never really “got” it. Immediately after you heard it, you forgot. So this is how to remember.

Then, use it in the conversation within the first 5-10 minutes of the interview. Now you’ll never forget it.

There’s another benefit to this too – using someone’s name helps you build a bond with them and build trust. Studies have shown you seem more  confident , competent and impressive when you say someone’s name when talking to them.

Go talk to the CEO in your company, and I bet they’ll use your name in the conversation. Leaders do this. Successful people do this.

This is a very underrated tip for interview success that anyone can do. It just takes effort.

You will build a stronger bond/rapport with the interviewer if you do this, and they’ll be more likely to remember you favorably and hire you.

9. Be upfront and use clear language

Don’t use vague language and “dodge” their questions. And don’t lie. They’ll usually know. Hiring managers interview a lot of people and have a great sense of this.

If you lie and get caught, there is no way they’re going to hire you.

And if you seem like you’re trying to hide information, they won’t trust you and won’t hire you either.

Hiring managers aren’t just evaluating your skill; they’re evaluating your character. If you’re going to be joining their team, they need to see what type of person you are. And  no hiring manager wants someone who is dishonest on their team.

What do they want? Someone who stands up and takes responsibility when things go wrong, who can learn from past mistakes, who is honest if there’s a problem, and who isn’t afraid to tell the truth.

The interview is where they test this before hiring you. So just remember that while they’re judging your experience and skills, they’re also judging these character traits.

10. Never badmouth

Don’t badmouth former bosses, former employers, coworkers or anyone else.

Here’s what happens when you do: The interviewer will immediately become curious about the other side of the story. They’ll wonder if you were part of the problem (or the whole problem).

They’ll want to know if you’re someone who always looks to blame others. And they might worry that you have a bad attitude and won’t be able to fit into their organization. And they won’t hire you because of this.

So never, ever badmouth anyone from your past in your interview. Also, you never know if the interviewer knows somebody who you’re bad-mouthing! Many industries have pretty tight-knit communities.

11. Make everything about THEM

Here’s a little secret: The interview isn’t really about you .

If you want to start getting a TON of job offers from your interviews, you need to start thinking about what the company wants. Make yourself seem like a solution to their problems.

How can you help them make money, save money, save time, etc.?

How will you make the hiring manager’s life easier if he or she hires you?

Figure out how to show this, start thinking about their needs and answering their questions with this mindset and you will be in the top 10% of job seekers.

The same goes for writing your resume .

If you want to stand out, start thinking of your resume as being about THEM. It’s a document that should be “ tailored ” to the employer’s needs,  showing them how your qualifications and past work will help you step into *their* job and be successful in their organization.

That’s the general idea, and it’s true for resumes, cover letters , and interviews.

Part III: Tips for After Your Interview

Once your interview is done and you’ve left the room, there are still a few things you should do to boost your chance of getting a callback.

These interview tips will help you impress the employer after the interview is over.

Always thank the interviewer

You want to thank your interviewer when you leave the room and send a thank you email the following day. 

Showing appreciation for the employer’s time goes a long way, and it’s one of my favorite interview tips because it requires no talent; just effort.

Act interested but not desperate while waiting for feedback

Sometimes you won’t hear from the employer for many days after your interview.

They might need to meet more candidates, or might need time to finalize their decision.

I’d recommend wrapping up your interview by asking when you can expect to hear feedback. That way, you won’t be too anxious waiting at home.

If that time passes, it’s okay to follow up with the employer to get an update from them. But be patient and never sound needy/desperate. Delays happen.

If they tell you, “sorry, things are taking longer than we expected and we are still making our decision,” the worst thing you can do is act frustrated or upset. This isn’t going to help you get hired!

The best thing you can do is keep applying for jobs while you wait. It’s never smart to wait around for one single employer because so many unexpected things can cost you the job or cause a delay in the process.  (Budgets change, people get promoted inside the company and they no longer need an external candidate, etc.)

So that’s another one of my favorite interview tips – when you finish one interview, try to get more lined up! Don’t stop interviewing for jobs until you’ve signed a job offer.

Is it really this simple for how to pass a job interview? I mean, aren’t all interviews different depending on the company and who you are talkin g to?

Plus if everyone is following these steps to pass their job interviews what else can I do to stand out from other applicants. I’ve been interviewing at so many jobs that seem to have high competition. I make it past the first round but then it seems like a numbers game and I struggle to pass the next couple of interviews to get the job.

Hiring managers use a lot of the same strategies across different industries. That’s why this works so well.

And surprisingly not that many people are preparing as well as they could. Those people might get the job if nobody who is better-prepared shows up, but if somebody follows my method and goes into the same interview process, that other person is going to have the odds stacked heavily against them.

For your last question… If you’re getting through the first job interview but then not being offered the position, or not passing the following rounds, it’s either an issue with your communication, or your job-related skills that they’re testing you on. Are these conversations you’re having getting very technical? Or no? Depending on your answer, it’ll help you know what to brush up on.

I think it’s hard to predict and most candidates aren’t very good at it. It goes both ways, I’ve seen candidates think they did horribly and be wrong. And also the other way around.

Thanks, Biron! I have read tons of blogs and material about job search and job interviews, and I must admit your advice is more digestible and realistic than the average! I am getting some phone interviews from England (I am Italian). I wowed the HR in the last one, believe me. She just seemed in love with me, but I don’t know how HR persons in general can influence my possible supervisor to attend a second interview (that’s the toughest part). I have noticed interview styles are different from time to time. Every company has its policy. Some of them start the first interview with the HR, others with the external recruiter setting up a behavioral interview, and others again with both the HR and the company line manager of your area. Anyway, I learned that it’s always good to attend interviews: it’s some kind of an exercise. I look forward to seeing what the results will be at the end of the “workouts”!

Searching for a new job can be stressful, and once you land that ever-so-important first interview, the nerves don't go away.

Searching for a new job can be stressful, and once you land that ever-so-important first interview, the nerves don't go away. You want to make a positive impression, and that can weigh on your mind as interview day approaches. If you’re prepping for a big interview, don’t worry! We have you covered with three simple tips to help you prepare for the interview process.

1. Research the company.

The people who will interview you have already reviewed your résumé and basic information – so extend them the same courtesy. Look over the company website and familiarize yourself with its mission statements, values, and policies. You also need to have a strong understanding of the job description to show the hiring manager you understand how this job fits into the company's mission. This will help you connect your gifts and passions with the company’s goals during your interview.

Employers want people who are interested in adding to their company's story and mission. If you haven’t done your homework by researching the organization, you may seem like someone who just wants a job. Companies know who has done their work to prepare for an interview and who has not. Go above and beyond by showing your interviewers why you chose their company. This step in interview preparation goes a long way in showing you care about the role.

2. Prepare in advance.

Don’t wait until the day of the interview to get everything in order. Make sure you have all the supporting documents you need, directions to the interview location, and (of course) a confidence-boosting interview outfit picked out ahead of time. Practice mock interview questions with yourself or a friend. Some of the most common questions that come up in job interviews are:

  • Why do you want this job?
  • What are your biggest strengths/weaknesses?
  • What skills do you have that no other applicants have?
  • How do you handle stressful situations?

Prepping for your interview ahead of time will help you put your best foot forward, showing potential employers you are serious about the job. Have interview answers ready to go and your interview skills honed for the big day. When doing an in person interview it’s also good to arrive at least 10 minutes early, so if you run into traffic or have trouble finding the right place, you won’t be late. If you are doing video interviews or a remote interview be sure that the link works ahead of time so there is no issue when it's go time.

3. Ask good questions.

Most employers end an interview with, "Do you have any questions for us?" This is an employer's chance to see your curiosity and critical thinking at work. Employers use this interview technique to assess you just as much as they use the prepared interview questions. Go to your interview with a list of questions prepared beforehand because it might be hard to come up with them on the spot. Here are some possible questions to get you started:

  • What are some specific examples of projects I’d be working on if I got hired for this role?
  • What would a typical day look like for this position?
  • Can you give me an example of a new hire who was successful in their position?
  • How will you measure the success of this role?
  • How would you describe your company's culture?
  • Is there anything on my résumé that concerns you or would keep you from hiring me?

Your questions are the last impression you’ll leave with potential employers, which is why it’s important to make sure you have good ones.

Final Tips to Prepare for An Interview

The hiring process can look different for each role you apply for. At larger companies the process may start with a phone interview to make sure you are a qualified candidate with relevant skills for the role. For almost every role there is a face to face interview. This could be either online or in person. Regardless of the method be sure you use good body language, make eye contact, and listen carefully to show you are engaged with the interviewer. After the interview, leaving an interviewer a thank you note can be a great way to show your character and show you are grateful for the opportunity.

The job search process can be difficult, so having key strategies in place to prepare for an interview is important. Landing an interview is exciting and sometimes daunting. If you have an interview standing between you and future opportunities, remember that research, preparation, and good questions will help you leave a lasting impact on potential employers. A Successful Job Interview

       Job interviews can be very scary experiences, even for people who have gone through the process many times. To pass the interview, candidates must present themselves well and show that in addition to being the most qualified for a certain position, they are also able to explain why. The interviewers sit across a large desk and take notes on every answer that is given. Performance in the job interview frequently determines if a candidate will get the job. Because the job interview is so important, it must be carefully prepared for, especially in very competitive fields. There are a few basic steps that anyone can take to be prepared for a job interview.

       The first step is to research the company carefully. Before job candidates ever go into a job interview, they should look up any information they can find about the company online. One reason for this is a very practical one: it can help the job candidates make sure that they want to work for a particular company or that they have the necessary skills for the job they are applying for. If the company feels like the right fit, doing research about the company will also give job candidates an advantage in the interview. It is easy for the interviewer to know if a job candidate is informed about the company during the job interview because the interviewer will typically be someone who has experience in the company. Researching the company will also help job candidates prepare a few questions of their own. Questions to research could include what the company sells, who the leaders are, where they do business, if they have been in the news (and why), or how the company stocks are doing. The initial step of doing some research about the company is crucial to being ready for an interview.

       After job candidates have done some research online and decided to move forward with the job application, the next thing they should do is prepare a resume. The resume first needs to fit the job description and show any experience that job candidates have that would make them a good candidate for the job. For example, if a job candidate is applying for a job as a receptionist, it is better to include work experience from an office job than work experience from a job in a restaurant. In addition to work experience, the resume should include any skills that job candidates have that would be useful in the job they are applying for. Sometimes these skills are listed specifically in the job description as required skills. Sometimes they are listed as preferred skills. In either case, listing relevant skills will help potential employers understand who is most qualified for a certain job. Finally, the resume should look very professional. The fonts should be easy to read and the spelling and grammar should not have mistakes. An accurate, carefully written resume will put any job candidate one step closer to being ready for a job interview.

       Finally, job candidates should practice for the interview. Lists of interview questions are widely available online, and by practicing before going into an interview, candidates can feel more confident in the interview. While interview questions cannot be perfectly anticipated, many common mistakes can be avoided by having time to think about the anwer before candidates are put on the spot. For example, some interviewers may ask a job candidate to describe one of his weaknesses. That topic can be especially difficult to talk about if a job candidate has never thought about it before because it will typically be associated with negative feelings. Even if candidates don’t practice the questions that are asked in the interview, having the experience of answering questions intelligently will increase their confidence and help them appear more relaxed in the interview. This final step will help job candidates be ready for an interview.

       While they may seem simple, these steps will help job candidates be ready for their next job interview. Researching the company will give them the background knowledge they need, polishing their resume will give the company hiring committee the background information they need, and practicing for the interview will help candidates show their strengths. Job interviews will still cause some nervousness, but they don’t need to cause job candidates crippling fear. With the right preparation, even if it’s your first interview, you’ll be ready.

  • Label the introduction paragraph, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion paragraph.
  • Circle the hook.
  • What is the general topic of the essay?
  • Underline the thesis.
  • Underline each of the topic sentences.
  • Do each of the topic sentences support the thesis?
  • Does the conclusion paragraph start by restating the thesis?
