The future continuous tense is formed by using the auxiliary verb "will" followed by "be" and the present participle of the main verb, "-ing". The structure of a future continuous sentence is as follows: Subject + will + be + present participle (-ing) form of the main verb For example, "I will be studying" or "She will be working". This tense is used to describe an action that will be in progress at a specific time in the future, and it is often used to talk about plans, arrangements, or predictions. It's important to note that the future continuous tense is different from the future simple tense , which is formed by using "will" followed by the base form of the verb. The simple future tense is used to describe a future event or action that is not in progress, such as "I will study later" or "She will work tomorrow". To make a negative sentence in the future continuous tense, we add "not" after "will". For example, "I will not be studying" or "She will not be working". To make a question in the future continuous tense, we invert the subject and "will" and add the present participle of the main verb. For example, "Will you be studying?" or "Will she be working?"

Normally, the future continuous is used to discuss plans that will take place some time in the future.

If that’s still a little too  vague (unclear) for you, let’s get right into discussing this important tense!

What Is the English Future Continuous Tense?

English future continuous vs. future simple: what’s the difference, how to form the english future continuous tense, how to use the english future continuous tense, describe interrupted actions in the future, talk about two future actions happening at the same time, reassure someone, how to make the english future continuous negative, how to form questions in the future continuous tense, and one more thing....

The future continuous tense, also known as the future progressive tense, is an English tense that’s used to talk about continuous actions that will occur in the future. It’s typically formed as follows: will + be + “-ing” form of the verb.

For example, if somebody asked you what you’ll be doing tomorrow afternoon, you could reply:

I will be studying English future tenses! I’ ll be studying English future tenses!

Both are essentially the same sentence, except the second one uses the “I’ll” (I + will) contraction .

Notice how the sentence refers to both the future and ongoing action. Also, notice how there’s an assumption that the action will be completed, even though we never said it will be.

To understand the difference between the English future simple and future continuous, we’re going to look at a couple of sentences.

First, let’s take a look at an example in the future simple tense:

I will eat at 5 pm.

Here, we expect something to happen in the near future. Notice that there’s also an implied ending to the tense. We also know when the action will begin—at five o’clock!

Now, let’s use the future continuous version of the same sentence:

I will be eating at 5 pm. I’ ll be eating at 5 pm.

This time, we don’t know when the action will begin. We only know that it will begin in the future and that it will still be happening at five o’clock.

Put simply, the English future tense typically expresses the speaker’s personal predictions, while the English future continuous tense typically has a stronger grounding in fact.

As you can see, the correct use of future tenses in English generally depends on the circumstances of the individual talking just as much as the language itself. In order to figure out the best use of these tenses, you need to familiarize yourself with English future tenses in a native context.

For example, you can get a language exchange partner to practice your general conversational skills. You can also experience English tenses through English media by watching TV shows and movies , listening to music and watching videos on a language learning platform like FluentU .

To form the English future continuous tense, follow this simple pattern:

(Subject) + will + be + ( -ing form of the root verb)

For example:

I  will be eating.

The good news about this formula is that you don’t need to conjugate the to be verb . Also, in this case, will is used as an auxiliary verb.

Sometimes, you’ll also see the word  “shall” used in place of “will,” as in “I shall be eating.” However, this sounds like an older form of English and sounds a bit  old-fashioned (not modern). It could even sound a bit strange.

You could also use “going to” , as in “I’m going to be eating.” However, like “shall,” “going to” isn’t as common as “will.”

Therefore, from here on out, we’re going to form the English future continuous using  “will.”

One of the most common uses of the future continuous tense is to describe a situation where a longer action (ongoing) will be interrupted by another shorter action (in the future).

I will be cooking when the TV show starts. I’ ll be cooking when the TV show starts.

I will be sleeping when your plane lands at the airport. I’ ll be sleeping when your plane lands at the airport.

Notice what these sentences have in common?

As you can see, when using the future continuous to describe interrupted actions, the word  when is commonly used.

When two actions are happening at the same time, they can also be referred to as “parallel actions”—and the future continuous tense often makes use of this as well.

I will be fishing while you look for a place to stay. I’ ll be fishing while you look for a place to stay.

He will be swimming while she is sailing. He’ ll be swimming while she’s sailing.

When the future continuous tense is used this way, the sentences often use the word  while.

If you’re looking to reassure (comfort) somebody regarding a future action that you’ll be taking, you’ll probably be using the future continuous as well.

For example, let’s say you offered to give somebody a  lift (a ride) in your car. If you’d like to reassure them that you’re able to give them a ride, you can say something like:

I’ ll be going there anyway!

Forming the negative in the future continuous is very simple.

All you have to do is add  not before the verb “to be” and the -ing verb. If you’re using contractions, remember that the contracted form of “will not” is won’t.

He will not be coming home too late. He won’t be coming home too late.

They will not be studying any Shakespeare this week. They won’t be studying any Shakespeare this week.

Using the future continuous tense is an excellent way to ask a polite question or even request a favor.

Remember our formula? See if you can notice a slight change below:

Will + subject + verb + to be + -ing verb

Let’s look at some example sentences:

Will you be playing football tonight?

Will we be staying in a hotel or a hostel this weekend?

Will she be arriving on time?

As you can see, if you’re asking a “yes or no” question, simply swap the subject for the auxiliary verb.

If you’re asking a wh- question , just tack on the wh- word at the beginning of the sentence.

Where will you be playing football tonight?

I hope you enjoyed this post on the English future continuous tense. While the future continuous may sometimes be overlooked, it’s a very important grammatical point for talking about the future with accuracy and confidence.

Best of luck!

Future Continuous Tense

The future continuous tense, also known as the future progressive tense, is a way of talking about things that will be happening continuously in the future. It’s called the future progressive because it shows that an action will be ongoing or in progress in the future. It’s formed by adding “will be” to the present participle of the main verb. In this article, we will explore the structure, rules, and usage, and provide examples of future continuous tense to help you better understand it. So, let’s get started!

What is Future Continuous Tense?

The Future Continuous Tense is a way of talking about actions or events that will be happening at some point in the future. It is formed by using the future tense of the verb “to be” (will be) with the present participle (the -ing form) of the main verb. This tense allows us to describe ongoing or continuous activities that are expected to take place later on. In simpler terms, it allows us to describe what will be going on in the future.

For example, “I will be studying for my exams tomorrow” here will be studying” represents the Future Continuous Tense, indicating the ongoing nature of the action (studying) at a future point. This tense is particularly useful when discussing future plans, events, or situations that are expected to have a duration or continuity. It enables us to convey the idea that something will be happening continuously or progressively at a later point in time.

Positive Form:

In positive sentences of future continuous tense, we use the future tense of the verb “to be” (will be) followed by the present participle (base form + -ing) of the main verb. This structure conveys that an action will be in progress at a particular time in the future.

  • I will be studying for the exam tomorrow.
  • Sarah will be cooking dinner tonight.
  • She will be working on her project all day.
  • They will be traveling to Paris next week.
  • The team will be practicing for the match.

Negative Form:

To create the negative form of the Future Continuous Tense, the word “not” is placed between the auxiliary verb “will” and the base form of the main verb. This indicates that the action will not be happening at a specific time in the future. It’s an effective way to express negation regarding ongoing activities at a later time.

  • I will not be attending the party tonight.
  • I will not be eating junk food anymore.
  • She will not   be working overtime tomorrow.
  • They will not be visiting us this weekend.
  • The workers will not be striking next month.

Interrogative Form:

In interrogative sentences, the auxiliary verb “will” is placed before the subject, and then “be” is positioned before the present participle of the main verb. This structure enables the speaker to inquire about ongoing actions in the future, seeking information or clarification.

  • Will she be joining us for lunch?
  • Will we be going on vacation this year?
  • Will you be using my laptop tomorrow?
  • Will she be finishing her assignment soon?
  • What will you be doing tomorrow evening?

Structure of Future Continuous Tense

Positive sentences:.

  • I will be studying  tonight.
  • The team will be practicing.
  • It will be raining tomorrow.

Negative Sentences:

  • We will not be eating dinner.
  • It will not   be raining tomorrow.
  • She won’t be attending the meeting.

Interrogative Sentences (yes/no questions):

  • Will it be raining next week?
  • Will they be arriving on time?
  • Will you be joining us for dinner?

Interrogative Sentences (wh-questions):

Wh-word:  (who, what, where, when, why, how)

  • Where will she be studying?
  • How long will you be waiting?
  • When will he be sleeping tonight?

Negative Interrogative Sentences:

  • Will she not be studying tomorrow?
  • Won’t you be joining us for dinner?
  • Will the children not   be playing outside?

The Future Continuous Tense takes us forward in time, allowing us to envision actions that will be in progress at a specific point in the future. It is like a window into what will be happening at a particular moment in the future. Imagine a line stretching ahead, representing the future. It starts before the moment we are talking about and stretches into that specific future moment. The actions are in progress, showing a sense of continuity. It’s like looking ahead and seeing activities unfolding, all while maintaining the ongoing nature of those actions.

Here are some basic words and expressions that are often associated with the future continuous tense:

  • At (a specific time)
  • Next week/month/year
  • In the future
  • By this time tomorrow
  • Throughout the day/night
  • For a while
  • While (doing something else)
  • At 3:00 PM next Friday
  • By this time next month
  • Next summer
  • At midnight tomorrow
  • In the coming years

These time expressions help provide context to the ongoing actions projected into the future, indicating specific moments or periods when they will be happening.

9 Future Simple and Future Continuous

Future Simple and Future Continuous

Annapurna Madhuri

Introduction:

The future continuous or the future progressive tense represents an action taking place at some time in future and i s used to discuss an event that will happen in the future for a specific amount of time.  It is also used to tell about a planned future event.

However, future continuous tense is less common in use.  Most times simple future and future continuous forms are used interchangably.

The verb in the future continuous tense is made of two parts:

  • The future tense form of verb ‘to be’ – will be
  • ‘ing’ affixed to the base verb.

Sentences in the future continuous form have a specified structure:

The affirmative sentence structure.

Subject + future tense form of verb ‘to be’ + base verb+ing

Example: She (subject)+ will (future tense form of ‘to be’)+ go (base-verb)+ing

She will be going to school, by this time next week., negative sentence structure:.

Subject+ future tense form of verb ‘to be’ + not + base verb + ‘ing’

Example: She will not be going to school by this time next week.

Interrogative structure:.

Future tense form of verb ‘to be’ + subject + base verb + ing + Question tag

Example: Will she be going to school by this time next week?

Learning objectives.

At the end of this lesson, all learners will be able to:

  • Use the ‘ing’ form of verbs to describe actions as they would be happening at some time in the future.
  • Use future continuous forms appropriately.
  • Apply rules to make a sentence in future continuous tense.
  • Use future continuous tense in interrogative and negative sentences.
  • Differentiate between the simple future and future continuous form of verbs.

' src=

Thanks Rebecca, I got 90 out of 100

I like the information! Thank, Rebeca!

' src=

Thanks Rebecca. Tomorrow I will be learning english at morning.

' src=

What’s the difference between “We won’t be taking the train” and “We’re not goig to take the train”? In the second situation I used the future simple to express, but in pratice, during a conversation for example, I don’t see difference.

' src=

My opinion is that the first sentence is used to talk about what will be happening in the future .The next one indicates how you will travel or what you will take for your travelling.

' src=

The future continuous tense is generally used to represent an event or action that is happening at a certain point in time in the future. The tense is also called the future progressive tense, as it denotes an action or event that is progressing or continuing at a particular time in the future.

Have a look at how different dictionaries define the future continuous tense in order to have a much better idea of what it is.

The future continuous tense, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is defined as a tense that is used to “refer to temporary actions and events that will be in progress at a particular time in the future.” According to the Collins Dictionary, the future continuous tense is used “to suggest that something is about to happen or will happen at some time that is not clear or precise.”

To have a more detailed idea of the future continuous tense, take a look at the formula and structure of the tense.

The formula of the future continuous tense is as follows:

Now, analyse the structure of the future continuous tense to see how the sentence structure changes when used as a positive, negative, interrogative and negative interrogative sentence.

Like the present continuous tense and the past continuous tense , the future continuous tense consists of two helping verbs – ‘will’ and ‘be’ followed by the past participle form of the main verb. The past participle of the main verb can be formed by adding an ‘ing’ to the end of the verb. The tense can be made negative by adding ‘not’ after ‘will’. When used in the interrogative form, the sentence starts with ‘will’ followed by the subject , ‘be’ and the past participle form of the verb.

Furthermore, always keep in mind that the future continuous tense can be used only with action verbs and never with stative verbs . This is mainly because only action verbs can be done for a particular duration. Also, remember that the action mentioned in the future continuous tense would have started earlier but would not have been completed at that particular point in time.

The future continuous tense can generally be used to,

  • Denote an action that takes place at a specific time in the future.
  • Also used to express an action that will take place over a period of time and does not happen all at once in that time.
  • To compare between the present and the future.
  • To indicate that there is more than one action taking place at the same point in time in the future.

Now, take a look at the following examples to have an in-depth analysis of how the future continuous tense can be used in sentences.

Denoting an action that takes place at a point of time in the future

  • I will be watching the new marvel movie along with my brother at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.
  • Susan will not be sleeping at that time.

Expressing an action that will take place over a period of time and not all at once

  • The judges will be announcing the winners of the competition at 5 p.m on Tuesday.
  • According to the plan, we will be meeting at the park around 11 a.m.

Comparing between the present and the future

  • This time next month, we will be travelling to Canada.
  • He might not be bold enough to make a decision now, but he will definitely be living a good life in the future.

Indicating more than one action taking place at the same time in the future

  • I will be going to school at 8 a.m, so I can drop her off as well.
  • Sheena told me that she cannot make it to the reception tomorrow because she will be travelling to Bangalore.

Future Continuous Tense

The future continuous tense describes an action that will happen at a specific time. This verb form is created using the auxiliary verb ‘will’ followed by ‘be’ and the present participle (verb + ‘ing’).

Here is the basic formula for forming the future continuous tense:

subject + will + be + verb + -ing

For example: “She will be studying for her exams all weekend.”

The future continuous tense can also be used to talk about an action that will be in progress at a specific time in the future and may continue after that time.

For example: “At 8 pm tomorrow, I will be watching a movie with my friends.”

The future continuous tense can also express an assumption or prediction about the future.

For example: “I’m sure they will be waiting for us when we arrive.”

Overall, the future continuous tense is used to talk about actions or events that will happen at a specific time or over time.

How does future continuous tense differ from future simple tense?

The future continuous tense and future simple tense differ in terms of the way they describe future actions.

The future simple tense, also known as the simple future tense, is used to express simple or planned actions that will happen in the future.

It is formed using only the auxiliary verb ‘will’ followed by the base form of the main verb. For example: “He will come to the party tonight.”

On the other hand, the future continuous tense is used to express that an action will progress at a specific point. It refers to an activity or event that will start in the future and still happen later.

It is formed with the auxiliary verb “will” + “be” + verb (present participle “-ing”). For example: “She will be running a marathon tomorrow.”

In summary, the future simple tense describes planned or simple actions or events that will occur at a specific time.

In contrast, the future continuous tense expresses that an action will be ongoing or in progress at a particular point of time in the future.

The 12 Tenses in English Grammar

English grammar has twelve tenses that indicate the time of an action or event. These twelve tenses of English grammar are divided into three categories: past, present, and future, as follows.

The Present Tenses

  • Simple present tense: Used to describe a fact or a permanent condition.
  • Present continuous tense describes an action in progress in the present or immediate future.
  • Present perfect tense: Used to describe an action that occurred in the recent past and has a connection to the present.
  • Present perfect continuous tense: Used to describe an action that started in the past and continued until now.

The Past Tenses

  • Simple past tense:  Used to describe a completed action in the past.
  • Past continuous tense:  Used to describe an action that was in progress at a particular point in the past.
  • Past perfect tense:  Used to describe an event that occurred before another event in the past.
  • Past perfect continuous tense:  Used to describe an ongoing action that continued until another event in the past.

The Future Tenses

  • The simple future tense is used to describe an action that will occur.
  • Future continuous tense: Used to describe an ongoing activity that will happen in the future.
  • The future perfect tense describes an action that will be completed before a specific point.
  • Future perfect continuous tense describes an ongoing action that will continue until a specific point.

Knowing the different tenses is crucial for effective communication in English. One must understand the context and use appropriate tenses for clarity and accuracy.

Lesson Plans for Teaching the Future Continuous Tense

Here are two lesson plans based on the teaching opportunities mentioned earlier:

Lesson Plan 1: Future Continuous Role-Play – An In-depth Exploration

Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to confidently and correctly use the future continuous tense in a conversational context, demonstrating their understanding of its structure, usage, and application in spoken English.

Materials Needed:

  • Role-play scenario cards: These should contain a variety of real-life situations that would require the use of the future continuous tense (e.g., making plans, predicting future events, etc.).
  • Notecards: Students can use these to jot down key points or draft their dialogues.
  • Pens: For writing on the notecards.
  • Whiteboard & Markers: To illustrate examples of the future continuous tense and write down key points during the discussion.
  • Introduction to Future Continuous Tense (10 minutes): Begin the class by introducing the future continuous tense. Discuss its formation (will + be + present participle), its usage (actions that will be ongoing at a specific time in the future), and provide a few examples. Write these examples on the whiteboard for students to reference throughout the lesson.
  • Interactive Demonstration (15 minutes): Use a role-play scenario to demonstrate the use of the future continuous tense in conversation. Engage with a student volunteer and model how to construct sentences using this tense.
  • Pair Work – Role-Play Scenario (20 minutes): Divide the students into pairs and distribute the role-play scenario cards. Each pair receives a unique scenario that they will have to enact using the future continuous tense. Allow them to use notecards to outline their dialogues and encourage them to include different time expressions (e.g., at this time tomorrow, by next week, etc.).
  • Presentation of Role-Plays (30 minutes): Once the pairs have prepared their dialogues, ask each pair to present their role-play to the class. Encourage the audience to listen carefully and note the use of the future continuous tense in each presentation.
  • Review and Discussion (15 minutes): After all the pairs have presented their role-plays, discuss the activity as a class. Highlight the correct usage of the future continuous tense and address any common mistakes or misconceptions. Use the whiteboard to write down these points for clarity.

Assessment: The students’ understanding of the future continuous tense will be evaluated based on their participation in the role-play presentation. Their ability to accurately and creatively use this tense in their dialogues will demonstrate their grasp of the concept. Ensure to provide constructive feedback, highlighting their strengths and improvement areas.

By making the lesson interactive and engaging, students learn the theoretical aspect of the future continuous tense and its practical application in everyday conversation. This approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of the concept, fostering confidence and proficiency in using the future continuous tense.

Lesson Plan 2: Future Continuous Writing Prompts – A Detailed Approach

Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to construct a compelling short story that correctly and creatively uses the future continuous tense. This lesson will also aim to enhance their understanding of story structure, character development, and the importance of grammar in written communication.

  • Writing prompts: These should be designed to encourage the use of the future continuous tense. For example, “Write a story about someone who will be travelling to a foreign land next year.”
  • Paper & Pens: For students to draft their stories.
  • Whiteboards & Markers: To illustrate examples, discuss the structure of a short story, and review the future continuous tense.
  • Review of Future Continuous Tense (10 minutes): Begin the class by revisiting the future continuous tense. Discuss its formation, usage, and provide examples. Write these on the whiteboard for students to reference throughout the lesson.
  • Introduction to Story Structure (15 minutes): Discuss the elements of a captivating short story – setting, characters, plot, conflict, and resolution. Use a well-known short story as an example to illustrate these elements.
  • Writing Prompt Exercise (30 minutes): Distribute the writing prompts and have students begin constructing their short stories. Remind them to incorporate the future continuous tense appropriately and to pay attention to the grammar, sentence structure, and dialogue. Encourage creativity and originality in their narratives.
  • Peer Review Session (20 minutes): Once the students have drafted their stories, divide them into small groups. Each student will read their story aloud to their group, after which the group will provide constructive feedback on the use of future continuous tense, story structure, and grammar.
  • Class Discussion (15 minutes): Conclude the lesson with a class-wide discussion. Talk about the importance of using appropriate grammar and structure in writing. Highlight how the correct use of tenses can enhance the clarity and impact of a narrative. Use this opportunity to address common mistakes and discuss ways to improve.

Assessment: The students’ short stories will serve as the primary assessment tool. Evaluate their stories based on the correct and creative use of the future continuous tense, the coherence of the plot, the development of characters, and the overall grammar and structure. Provide individual feedback emphasizing their strengths and suggesting areas for improvement.

The future continuous tense is more than just another grammar rule to memorize; it’s a powerful tool that can elevate your communication, both in speech and writing.

Chapter 5-8-10: The Future Progressive / Future Continuous Tense

WHEN TO USE IT: The future progressive (also called the future continuous ) tense is used to describe actions ongoing in the future. The future progressive is used to:

refer to continuing action (an action in progress) that will occur (or that we expect to occur) at a specific time in the future;

predict or guess the present as well as future events;

project what someone or something will be doing into the future;

make polite inquiries about someone's plans—without wishing to influence those plans; and

when used with the word "still," the future continuous can be used to refer to events that are happening now and that we expect to continue to be ongoing into some point in the future.

FORM: [will be + present participle] or [am/is/are + going to be + present participle]

Unlike with the future simple, the future continuous can use either of the expressions, immediately above, to discuss situations that are ongoing in the future. In other words, these two forms can generally be used interchangeably without much difficulty. There are nuances of "feeling" that second language learners may not pick up on: the forms related to "am/is/are going" usually suggest some sort of prior planning, whereas the forms related with "will" are more matter-of-fact or "business-like."

Each of the highlighted compound verbs in the following sentences is in the future progressive tense.

The glee club will be performing at the celebration of the town's centenary.

Ian will be working on the computer system for the next two weeks.

The selection committee will be meeting every Wednesday morning.

We will be writing an exam every afternoon next week.

They will be ringing the bells for Hypatia next month.

Don’t send a text message to him right now, he will be sleeping. [predicting the present]

Will you be watching a movie tonight? [polite enquiry]

Future Continuous Tense with 'Will'

In English there are many different ways to talk about the future. What can you remember about the future continuous tense with will? Here are ten sentences to see if you can remember how to form this tense. When you have completed the exercise, see if you can explain for other learners when and why we use this tense. Good luck!

Subject + will + be + base verb + ing

"I will be sleeping at midnight."

For negative sentences use won't (will not) instead of will :

"I won't be sleeping at midnight."

We use this tense to talk about an action that will be happening at a particular moment/time in the future. The action will have already started before that that moment/time, but will not finish at that time.

For example, I start work at 9am and finish at 5pm so if someone asks me, "What will you be doing at 10am on Monday?" I can answer, "I will be working at 10am on Monday" . That action (working) will have started before that time and will finish much later.

For extra practice answer these 5 questions. Write your answers in the comments area.

  • What will you be doing at 9pm tomorrow?
  • What will you be doing on Sunday morning?
  • What will you be doing at this time in 5 years?
  • What will you be doing when you have retired form work?

You can start your answers like this:

  • At 9pm tomorrow, I will be...
  • On Sunday morning,...
  • At this time in 5 years,...
  • When I have retired form work,...

Now complete these sentences using the future continuous tense:

  • 1. This time next year I (live) in London.
  • 2. At 8PM tonight I (eat) dinner with my family.
  • 3. They (run) for about four hours. Marathons are incredibly difficult!
  • 4. Unfortunately, I (work) on my essay so I won’t be able to watch the match.
  • 5. She (study) at the library tonight.
  • 6. (you/wait) at the station when she arrives?
  • 7. I (drink) at the pub while you are taking your exam!
  • 8. (she/visit) her Grandmother again this week?
  • 9. At 3PM I (watch) that movie on channel four.
  • 10. (they/attend) your concert next Friday? It would be lovely to see them.
