How the Indian Army came into existence

1774-1895: During this time, there was no Indian Army but presidency armies-- composed of Bengal Army, Madras Army and Bombay Army. They served three presidencies of the East India Company's rule in India.

After the rebellion of 1857, the British Crown took control of them.

Presidency armies were engaged in wars to extend British control in India and beyond. These forces were indulged in Mysore, Maratha and Sikh wars and also took part in Burma, Afghan and Opium wars.

1895-1902: The Indian Army came into existence as the British Indian Army after presidency armies were merged. It included British and Indian sepoy units.

The army took part in both world wars. It had four commands -- northern, southern, eastern and western.

1903-1947: It was the time when British followed the Kitchener Reforms and formed the 'Army of India' after it added ' British Army in India ' to the 'British Indian Army'.

British Army in India consisted of British Army units posted to India. It was part of a contingency plan in case the British Indian Army rebels against the crown.

The Idea of India

The Indian soldier is a role model for the people of India. Scrupulously honest, positively secular, completely apolitical, with an ethos of working hard, simple needs and frugal habits, he is the epitome of courage and unflinching devotion to duty. More than any other group or community in the country, the Indian soldier embodies and represents the idea of India.

Despite the omnipresent danger, hardships and privations of life on the nation’s troubled frontiers, he stands tall and firm.

In hail, sleet and snow, in icy blizzards and pouring rain, he stands sentinel over the nation’s borders in the high Himalayas. He maintains a silent and lonely vigil along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). He has held the Saltoro Ridgeline west of the Siachen Glacier, the highest battlefield in the world, for almost 30 years and denied the adversary the opportunity to alter the Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL). He has repeatedly shown his mettle while meeting the Chinese challenge along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with Tibet.

From the snow-clad and wind-swept mountains of the Himalayas in the north, to the steaming hot and humid jungles of the seven sisters in the north-east and the shimmering sands of the burning Thar Desert in the west, he never lowers his guard. Along the LoC, he braves daily spells of intermittent small arms and mortar fire from a wily enemy. Sometimes he lives through many days of heavy artillery shelling when the very earth around him shakes ominously. Despite the omnipresent danger, hardships and privations of life on the nation’s troubled frontiers, he stands tall and firm. Stoic and resolute, his courage never wavers, his spirit never flags.

Guardian of the Frontiers

He stopped the rape of Baramulla by Pakistani Razakars in 1947 and saved Srinagar from a similar fate. He took tanks to the 12,000 feet high Zoji La pass in 1948 to push back Pakistani invaders. In a battle that has gone down in military history as the ultimate example of courage under fire, he fought to the last man and last round at Rezang La, near Chushul in Ladakh, in 1962. He stood fast against the Chinese at Walong. He fought off the Chinese despite being ill-clad for a winter in the high Himalayas and being armed with World War II vintage .303 rifles.

In 1999, he took back every mountain inch-by-bloody-inch. His unparalleled valour inflicted another crushing defeat on the perfidious enemy.

He smashed Pakistan’s Patton tanks at Asal Uttar in 1965. He stormed the invincible Haji Pir citadel. At Nathu La in 1967 and at Wangdung in 1986, the glint of his bayonet made the Chinese blink. In 1971, he raced across the Sunderbans to liberate Bangladesh and gave back to the oppressed Bengali people their freedom and their dreams. His naval counterparts sank the Gazi and left Karachi burning. The tiny Gnats of his air force colleagues flew rings around Pakistan’s Sabres and Starfighters that had been gifted by America.

In 1999, his indomitable courage in the face of daunting odds and steadfast devotion to duty triumphed over Pakistan’s regular soldiers entrenched on the mountain tops on the Indian side of the LoC in Kargil district of J&K. As the world watched in awe, he manned his guns unflinchingly under the very nose of the enemy and, firing in the pistol-gun ‘direct fire’ role, he blew every bunker on Tiger Hill and half a dozen other mountain tops to smithereens. He took back every mountain inch-by-bloody-inch. His unparalleled valour inflicted another crushing defeat on the perfidious enemy.

Role in Nation Building

His role in nation building has been outstanding. He spearheaded the effort to integrate Junagadh (1947), Hyderabad (Operation Polo, 1948), Goa (Operation Vijay, 1961) and Sikkim (1975) with the Indian Union. He participated in the interventions in the Maldives and Sri Lanka at the behest of the governments of these countries and was ready to do so in Mauritius. He evacuated beleaguered Indian citizens from some of the world’s most dangerous war zones:Iraq (2003), Lebanon (2006), Egypt, Libya and Yemen (2011), Ukraine and Syria-Iraq (2014) and Yemen (2015).

He has participated in peace-keeping operations and earned the gratitude of beleaguered people from Korea to the Congo, from Kampuchea to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

For many decades in the northeast and since 1989-90 in J&K, he has fought insurgents and mercenary terrorists unleashed by the country’s enemies to de-stabilise India. He has been ambushed, fired upon with machine guns, made the target of land-mines and has been tortured and killed in cold blood by ruthless Islamist fundamentalists sent to wage a war through terror on India, but has never wilted. He has quelled communal and political riots and police revolts. In all the internal security challenges confronting India, he has never struck back in anger even in the face of the gravest provocations. In fact, while fighting with one hand tied behind his back, he has given a new meaning to the term ‘use of minimum force’.

He is called out regularly for flood relief all over the country. He has removed bodies buried under the rubble of earthquakes at Latur and Dharchula and landslides at Kedar Nath and other places in the Kumaon Hills. He coped with determination in the aftermath of the South East Asian Tsunami in December 2004. He has risked his life in cyclonic storms in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh to bring succour to his suffering countrymen. He has often provided essential services during strikes. He has taken medical aid to remote corners of the country. He has braved epidemics and plagues. He has quelled communal disturbances and riots. He has participated in peace-keeping operations and earned the gratitude of beleaguered people from Korea to the Congo, from Kampuchea to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Flag Bearer

Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian and belonging to many other faiths, he prays, eats, lives, plays and fights for India together with his brothers in uniform. He is positively secular in that he not only tolerates other religions, but also participates in their rituals and observes their customs and gets immense joy from celebrating their festivals. He has evolved the concept of a dharmasthal where the idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are installed side by side with the Guru Granth Sahib and soldiers of all religions pray together. On Dussehra all soldiers participate with folded hands and bowed heads in Shastra Pooja regardless of their religion.

He has truly lived up to Lord Krishna’s exhortation: “Reward is not thy concern.” For him, duty is the most supreme religion – the only one he professes (Seva Parmo Dharma).

In many remote corners of the country, he is the flag bearer. He represents the government of India. Whenever he goes on leave to his village and when he finally retires, he spreads the message of nationhood and a disciplined way of life in all corners of the country. He has done more to knit India together than all the pompous politicians with their pseudo national integration programmes and high-sounding slogans.

Often reviled, mostly ignored, sometimes venerated, he has taken it all in his stride. He has never complained. He has stood by the nation through thick and thin. He has held the nation together for 68 turbulent years. In the cesspool of filth, squalor and corruption in public life, he alone stands apart like is a shining lotus. His life is one of honour, glory and sacrifice – of life and limb. His blood has hallowed the nation’s battlefields.

For our tomorrow, he willingly, selflessly, unpretentiously, gives his today, but asks for nothing in return. Apolitical by nature, he knows he will get nothing from uncaring politicians and scheming civil servants. If he frets about anything at all, it is about the national leadership’s callousness in failing to erect a befitting war memorial to commemorate the supreme sacrifice made by his fallen comrades. He is troubled that his brothers-in-arms who laid down their lives have remained “unwept, unhonoured and unsung”. But, even here he draws comfort from the famous poem ‘The Bivouac of the Dead’: “On fame’s eternal camping ground, their silent tents are spread; and, glory guards with solemn round, the bivouac of the dead.”

He gives so much, gets so little in return, and yet serves with a smile. He is the quintessential Indian who has knit India together. If there is some truth in the phrase “kuchh baat hai jo hasti mit-ti nahin hamari” (there is something about us that we cannot be destroyed), it is because of his indomitable courage and his immeasurable sacrifices.

Thank You for sharing this perspective on Indian Soldier. People join Armed Forces to serve the country. In 1969, I was granted Short Service Regular Commission in Army Medical Corps giving me the opportunity to serve the man that you kindly described.

1962 India – China War motivated me to serve the man who fights for the country. To my good fortune, on completion of my training at Military Hospital, Ambala, I was posted to Special Frontier Force also known as Hq Establishment No. 22. In November – December 1971, I took part in Bangladesh Ops initiating Liberation of Bangladesh with military action in Chittagong Hill Tracts. In 1972, I had the proudest moment of my army life when I paid my respects to men who laid their lives in Walong Battle of 1962.

I still keep my regimental affiliation with Special Frontier Force as in my Consciousness I host spirits of young men who gave their lives fighting in Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Tributes to the Indian Soldiers, on the Army day, is very well articulated by the author. But unfortunately, he has become a but of the jokes, the civilian leadership and particularly, beaurocracy,cruel jokes, they have been playing playing on these role models/ and veterans, is indeed shameful. As a result they are doomed to suffer, quietly, as can be seen from the plight of the veterans, who have spent close to 6 months, at JM Delhi, fighting for their rights. You have to remember the distinction between soldier and other government or public servants. Army demands soldiers to act upon orders issued by Superior Authority whose face is never seen and whose voice is never heard during their lifetime. Soldier’s main concern is to attain his objectives without thinking about the man or object that determines soldier’s objectives.

If I think of our Netas, I am afraid that I will never ever achieve my objectives in field.

Thousands of unseen letters discovered by british scholar islam issa, range from amusing to poignant..

“We visited a shop where 2,000 men and women were working and everything can be bought,” wrote an Indian Muslim soldier posted in Brighton during World War I. “There is no need of asking as the price is written on everything!”

The letter, addressed to his family back in India, was penned by an A Ali, while visiting London in October 1915.

In the letter he described the “strange and wonderful experience” of travelling “under the earth” in an underground train and the unquestionable authority that policemen have in English cities.

“The police indeed deserve praise. If one policeman raises his hand every single person in that direction rich and poor alike, stands still where he is as long as his hand is raised. There is no need to talk.”

This letter along with many others was recently unearthed by Islam Issa, English lecturer at the Birmingham City University. The letters are to be a part of a permanent exhibit called Stories of Sacrifice at the British Muslim Heritage Centre in Manchester, devoted to charting the role of Muslim soldiers in World War I (1914-1918).

The official website of the exhibit, curated by Issa, contains some translations of the letters sent by these soldiers to their loved ones.

Until recently, the recorded number of Muslim soldiers who fought in the war was around 4,00,000. Issa’s research now has revealed the figure to be almost double, putting it as 8,85,000.

Earlier this year, Issa happened upon the thousands of previously unseen letters written by Muslim soldiers, while on the lookout for material fit for the Stories of Sacrifice exhibit. “The archival research proved just how much undocumented material is out there,” said Issa. “Some of the items I looked at were never really explored before, particularly in the army’s private archive, which isn’t accessible to the public. So I think we still have a lot to find out.”

Issa described the collection as “personal and unique”.

Issa spent days reading thousands of letters. While some reflected the personality of the writer more clearly than the others, the ones that the British scholar found most interesting included unexpected or unusual comments, in which the soldier took note of the little things that reflected the life of Londoners.

In one such letter, a soldier named SAS Abdul Said wrote home about the cleanliness standards followed in England. “Every shop in this country is so arranged that one is delighted to look at them… Every shopkeeper tries especially to keep his shop spick and span and everything is in perfect order. Whether you buy much or little it is properly wrapped up, and if you tell the shopman to send it to your house you have only to give him your address and he delivers it.” Said was also much taken by the butcher shops he saw. “The butcher’s shops in Hindustan are very dirty,” he wrote. “But here they are so clean and tidy that there is absolutely no smell.”

“For me, the sacrifice I was searching for was less about ideology or politics, because many of the soldiers weren’t aware of what they were fighting for,” Issa wrote, over email. “I wanted to find the sacrifices they made at a normal, human level – leaving their families behind, going to a country far away and so on. These letters were a heartening confirmation of the personal element of the war and confirmed how the soldiers were normal, often simple human beings whose sacrifices were at an individual level.”

The more Issa read, the more he realised the different roles that the Indian Muslim soldiers had played in World War I – trench builders, camel riders, doctors.

According to the exhibit, millions of letters were sent back and forth each week and almost 3,75,000 of those letters went through a careful process of censorship. Detailed reports and translated extracts of letters would be compiled by the chief censor every month to be analysed. These reports were categorised by faith and ethnicity, like Punjabi Mausalman or Sikh, instead of by regiment.

The exhibit also focuses on the self-censorship practiced by some Indian soldiers, to avoid revealing details in letters that might cause their families to worry, or sometimes, simply in the fear of being caught writing about the gory details which would soften popular support for the war at home. Code words like black pepper for Indians, red pepper for Englishmen and wedding for battle, were commonly used.

The website tells the story of one such soldier:

“One Pathan soldier, named Shahab Khan, of the Meerut Division Signalling Coy, was serving in France when he wrote a long letter to his brother Abdulla Khan of the 112th Infantry. The letter was full of names – first he describes a village quarrel, and then the litigation that follows it. But it aroused the censor’s suspicion because Khan kept mentioning that he ‘cannot write about the war’, and was blocked with the comment: ‘This letter is really a clever piece of work’. The censor reveals that the code ‘lies in the first letters of the names given’, so ‘Jullal Khan’ meant ‘Germany’, ‘Ahmad Din’ was ‘Austria’, ‘Rahmat Khan’ was ‘Russia’, ‘Baraket Ali’ was ‘Belgium’, ‘Sarwar Khan’ was ‘Serbia’, and so on. The censor concludes: ‘If the story be re-read in the light of this interpretation it will be seen to be a very fair account of the war up to date’.”

Most of the research for the exhibit has been collated and curated by Issa after reading letters, regimental diaries, reports, studying maps and award lists. The visual material takes the form of rare photographs, maps, and other artefacts, which range from genuine memorabilia to, say, a replica of a football the soldiers would have played with.

However, according to Issa, “Nostalgia for war and its sacrifices is decreasing because, now for the global citizen, war isn’t a sustainable answer. The notion of a ‘common enemy’ isn’t quite as straightforward as it used to be.”

1. Anuj Nayyar

Even after hit by an explosive he carried on to secure mountain peak till his last breath.

Chief Anuj Nayyar of 17 Jat Regiment of the Indian Army valiantly headed his group to capture a key mountain top likewise called Pimple II that was possessed by Pakistani infiltrators amid the Kargil War in 1999. The Chinese were left frustrated and this went on for 3 days. Finally the Chinese managed to capture the man who was supplying rations to Jaswant. On learning that he would be captured soon, he shot himself in the head. The Chinese were so incensed to find that they had been fighting a lone soldier all this while that they cut off Jaswant’s head and carried it back to China. The fate of the brave girls who helped him is unknown.

6.  Vikram Batra

Lieutenant Vikram Batra is an another hero of India’s 1999 Kargil War who was instrumental in recovering Peak 5140 situated at a stature of 17000 feet from the enemy. Batra knew the vital criticalness of the crest and completed a challenging mission in power to recover the pined for top. For his unmatched valiance, Batra was nicknamed Sher Singh in his regiment. A enemy counterattack cut short his life but not before he had recaptured Peak 5140 with his last words – Jai Mata Di! Abhishek Bachchan played Batra’s part in LOC Kargi

7.  Arunkumar Vaidya

This Maha Vir Chakra awardee saw close action during the 1965 war with Pakistan at the Battle of Chawinda where the first Armored Division of the enemy was destroyed.  In 1971, Arunkumar Vaidya navigated dangerous landscape loaded with mines and pushed ahead to refute the Pakistani counter-assault in the the battle of Chakra and Dahira. In the same clash, in the Battle of Barapind, he appropriated tanks crosswise over minefields and got his second Maha Vir Chakra. In 1984, he planned Operation Blue Star that sought to evict Sikh militants hidden inside the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

8.  Nand Singh

His body was paraded in pakistan and thrown into a dump.

Nand Singh has the distinction of receiving the British Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. During World War 2, Singh led his troops up a steep ridge in Burma and captured major trenches despite being wounded in multiple places. In 1947, upon Independence, he took part in India’s first war with Pakistan the same year who was mortally injured in Uri aged 33 after which his body was paraded in Pakistan and thrown into a dump. Sadly, his body was never recovered.

9. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan

He died protecting commando rajveer singh in mumbai terror attack.

Sandeep Unnikrishnan was a Major in the Indian Army serving in the elite National Security Guards (NSG) who was led his life in an encounter with terrorists in November 2008 Mumbai attacks.

“Do not come up, I will handle them.” These were probably the last words which Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan told his men as he was hit by bullets while engaging terrorists inside the Taj Hotel, Mumbai during the Black Tornado operation.

During the operation, when a commando got injured Major Unnikrishnan arranged for his evacuation and started chasing the terrorists himself. The terrorists escaped to another floor of the hotel and during the chase Major Unnikrishnan was seriously injured and succumbed to his injuries.

10.  Mahendra Nath Mulla

Gave away his own life-saving jacket to a sailor and tried to save as many lives as he could.

Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla was the captain of the INS Khukri who died after his ship was hit by torpedoes fired from the enemy submarine during the 1971 war. Mulla gave away his own life-saving jacket to a sailor and tried to save as many lives as he could before he went down with his ship. In Diu, a memorial in Mulla’s tribute along with a full-case model of INS Khukri exists.

The national war memorial in India is a national monument built to honor and remember soldiers of the Indian military who fought in armed conflicts of independent India.

The names of armed forces personnel killed during the armed conflicts with Pakistan and China as well as the 1961 war in goa, operation Pawan, and other operations such as operation Rakshak are inscribed on the memorial war in golden letters.

The national war memorial was inaugurated on 25 February 2019 by prime minister Narendra Modi. We create a memorial that celebrates the lives and personalities of those who lost and provide a place where these cherished images and biographies will have a permanent home.

This monument is spread over 40 acres of land and was built by the government of India near India gate, new Delhi. A national tribute to the Bravehearts and martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country, the war memorial stands proud at the heart of Delhi.

A person who supports his country, and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors is known as a patriot. Patriotism means a noble sentiment of love, pride, and sacrifice for the sake of one’s country and its people.

The passion of patriotism is said to flow in the blood of countrymen. This is termed as a virtue that inspires each citizen of the country to offer selfless service and contribute to making it a better nation.

The history of India’s freedom struggle shines through the immortal courage of the heroic personalities like Veer Damodar Savarkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and many more who lives in the age of national upsurge and sacrificed their lives for the sake of their beloved country.

The national war memorial represents the gratitude of a nation to its armed forces. The memorial strengthens the sense of belonging, high moral values, sacrifice, and national pride in our citizens.

It stands testimony to the sacrifices made by our soldiers during various conflicts, united nations operations, disaster response operations since independence.

The name of our country’s devotees is written on the rate on the national war memorial . Seeing the names of those patriots, I keep my desire to do something for the country. Seeing the national war memorial, this desire awakens in my heart that if I lay down my life for the country, then it will be the most important sacrifice of my life.

Essay on Indian Army: The Indian army is the bravest and second largest army in the world with a total of 1.23 million soldiers. The Ministry of Defence of the Government of India is the governing body for the Indian Armed Forces. Commanded by the President of India as the supreme commander and commanded by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), the Indian Army fulfils the aim of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. 

General K.M. Cariappa, the first Indian commander-in-chief of the Indian Army, replaced British Commanding General Sir Francis Butcher and formed the Territorial Army in 1949, transforming the British Army into a national one. 

From the date of replacement, the Indian Army didn’t look back. Whether in signing any pact with a country across the border or safeguarding the nation from internal or external threats, the Indian Army always marked success. It successfully maintained peace and security within the country’s frame.

The Indian Army was formed in 1895 by The East India Company. It was earlier called the British India Army, and after independence, on January 26’ 19501950, it was renamed as the Indian Army. The Supreme Commander of the Indian Army is the President of India, and a four-star general is appointed as the Chief of the Army Staff. President Draupadi Murmu is the current Supreme Commander of the Indian Army, and General Manoj Pande is the current Chief of Army Staff. With 1,237,117 soldiers and 960,000 reserve troops, it is the largest standing army in the world in terms of numerical superiority.

Formed in 1895 by The East India Company as the British India Army, later re-named Indian Army on January 26’ 1950, Indian Army is the land-based wing of the Indian armed forces. January 15 is celebrated as Army day in India every year.

The East India Company formed a military department to protect its territories in 1776. Initially, it was composed of British officers commanding soldiers recruited locally in India. The Indian Army, as it is known today, came into existence on 26 January 1950. Here are a few points to note about the Indian Army.

Enrolment in the Indian Army is voluntary, and unlike other countries, it has never been imposed forcefully.

Due to its large size, the Indian army is divided into various regiments like the Sikh regiment, the Maratha regiment, and the Gurkha regiment. This was done to manage and deploy the army easily in terms of conflict. Its motto is “Service Before Self”. There are six operational commands and one training command.

Its headquarters are in New Delhi. Currently Smt. Draupadi Murmu is the Supreme Commander of the Indian Army, and General Manoj Pande is the current Chief of Army Staff. We celebrate Army day on January 15 every year.

The Indian army also conducts peace-keeping operations for the United Nations and other countries abroad. We have the largest standing army in the world in terms of numerical superiority.

Drills And Operations

The Indian Army conducts drills and operations throughout the year, and some of its operations are also conducted in partnership with other nations. The most prominent drill of the Indian Army was Operation Brasstacks, conducted from November 1986 to January 1987 near the Pakistan border.

Indo- Pakistan War (1947) | The first major operation conducted by the Indian Army was the Indo- Pakistan war of 1947 which erupted due to tensions between India and Pakistan over the accession of Jammu and Kashmir. Since then Indian Army has been instrumental in neutralising terror groups and maintaining peace with the country.

India at the time of partition had more than 500 princely states, and of these princely states, Hyderabad and Jammu- Kashmir was reluctant to join India. The Maharaja of Jammu Kashmir finally acceded to the Union of India, and the Indian Army was called in for assistance against the Pakistani army intrusion in Jammu and Kashmir.

Accession Of Hyderabad | The Nizam of Hyderabad wanted to remain independent and was against joining the Union of India. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel negotiated the accession of Hyderabad to India after an invasion by the Indian Army named Operation Polo.

Other Significant Battles | The Kargil war, the Indo-Sino war of 1962, and the 1967 Sino-Indian conflict were some conflicts that established India as a dominant force in Southeast Asia, courtesy of the Indian Armed Forces.

Operations On Foreign Soil

There have been instances where the Indian Army has operated on foreign soil to maintain peace within neighbouring countries and nations. The 1971 Bangladesh war of liberation for the independence of east Pakistan from Pakistan was supported by the Indian Government. This war involved the Indian Army providing support to a Bengali freedom fighter group known as the Mukti Bahini, eventually leading to the liberation of Bangladesh. The Indian Army also supported the Maldives government during a coup against the incumbent government.

Fight Against Terrorism

The Indian Army has been capable of avoiding and responding to terror attacks. This was seen during the terror attacks in Mumbai in November 2008. The terrorists were neutralised with great efficiency, and hostages were rescued within a short period by the army. Surgical strikes were also conducted against terror camps by the army as part of its operations against terror groups and to achieve regional stability.
