Introduction, the arrival.

The journey to the beach culminates in the first glimpse of the expansive ocean, a sight that invariably evokes a sense of awe. The salty air, the sound of waves crashing against the shore, and the sight of the horizon where the sky meets the sea, all contribute to a heightened sense of anticipation.

The Experience

Once settled, the day unfolds in a series of sensory experiences. The feel of warm sand underfoot, the taste of salt on the lips, and the enveloping heat of the sun form a medley of sensations. The beach is a theatre of life, with people engaging in various activities, from building sandcastles and playing beach volleyball to surfing and sunbathing.

Exploring the Depths

For the adventurous, the ocean beckons. Swimming in the sea or exploring its depths through snorkeling or scuba diving offers a glimpse into an underwater world teeming with life and color. It’s a humbling experience that underscores the vastness and complexity of nature.

500 Words Essay on A Day at the Beach

The beach, a place where the land meets the sea, is a unique space of transition and transformation. Its dynamic nature, constant ebb and flow, and the juxtaposition of permanence and transience, make it an intriguing subject of contemplation. A day at the beach is not just about sandcastles and sunbathing; it’s a profound experience that engages all the senses and invites introspection.

The Interplay of Elements

Throughout the day, the beach reveals the interplay of the elements. The sun, the sand, the sea, and the sky, each plays its part in this grand spectacle. The sun’s journey across the sky paints the canvas of the day, from the soft pastel hues of dawn to the fiery drama of sunset. The sand, shaped and reshaped by the waves and the wind, is a testament to the impermanence of things. The sea, with its rhythmic dance of the tides, is a symbol of life’s ebb and flow. The sky, with its ever-changing patterns of clouds, mirrors the fleeting nature of our thoughts and emotions.

The Human Connection

The beach is also a social space, a meeting point for people from all walks of life. It’s a place where children’s laughter mingles with the murmurs of lovers, where the solitude of a lone walker intersects with the camaraderie of a group of friends. The beach is a melting pot of stories, each wave bringing a new tale to the shore. It’s a place where boundaries blur, and we reconnect with our shared humanity.

Reflection and Departure

In conclusion, a day at the beach is more than a leisurely escape; it’s a journey of discovery and introspection. It’s a stage where nature’s drama unfolds, a canvas where our stories intersect, and a mirror that reflects our shared humanity. It’s a place that invites us to slow down, to observe, to feel, to connect, and to contemplate. A day at the beach is a celebration of life in all its beautiful complexity.

Beach and my soul, essay on beach cleaning.

Beach is one of my favourite places to visit. I feel so refreshed after visiting a beach. It makes my body and mind active, and I think it is the best place on this planet where we can enjoy ourselves with our friends and family members. I love playing with the sand and building sandcastles with my friends. We made a huge sandcastle on our last visit to the beach and named it ‘The Castle of Wonders’. My friend and I announced ourselves as the two kings of that castle and placed two flags above it. The red flag I put represented me as the king of the castle, and the blue one represented my friend. We also clicked a picture standing before our majestic sandcastle, and I consider it one of the greatest moments of my life.

The unpredictability of waves always amazes me. The way they hit the shores is magical. I love playing with waves; my friends and I run away from the waves to avoid getting our legs washed by them. English Summary

A Day at the Beach Essay

A beach is an area of sand or small stones around the sea. I spent a day at Marina Beach in Chennai when I went there with my family on vacations. It was one of the best days of my life. I always wanted to visit the beach because it is a lot of fun.

The beach was surrounded by dense trees and it was very clean. My mother sat on the sand under a tree and took out a book to read. My sister and I went to play with the water in the sea. We splashed water on each other and enjoyed the sea waves when they made us go up and down. After some time, we came back. Then I and my sister made a sandcastle. I also collected shells on the beach and we decorated the castle with them.

The beach became more splendid when the sky turned red. After six o’clock, we went to the changing room and took bath and changed our clothes because the guards did not allow us to be on the beach after sunset. We came back to our hotel and we all talked about our day. We all were so happy because the day was well spent.

Introduction

Description of a beach.

Summer is the perfect time for individuals to visit and enjoy the marvelous scenes along the coast. In addition, the feelings and experiences felt on the beach during the summer are always fantastic. Several sceneries and experiences are seen and felt at the beach during summer. These include; the plantation along the beach and inside the sea, the animals, the waters, and the people found on the beach.

The beach appears to be alive and joyful with the presence of the natural vegetation. There are evergreen plantations both along and inside the beach. Images of buoyant seaweeds can be seen along the shore. Palms trees are seen to stand tall along the beach, dancing to the tune of the breeze emanating from the waters of the sea.

The sea grapes and the sea oats are also observed gathered in clusters in the sea next to the shore. Their colored flowers are splendid and brighten at the shining of the summer sun. The sweet scent of the flower grapes sends a signal to the world about the hope brought by nature.

The atmosphere is fully intensified by the aroma produced by the buoyant sea flowers. In addition, from afar, images of leafless trees are also observed. The perfect combination of the vegetation along the beach and inside the sea displays the beauty of nature to the highest peak.

It mesmerizes the eyes to gaze at the beautiful creatures that hover all over the beach and on the deep-sea waters. There are sights of beautiful birds that fly all over the dry shoreland and over the seawaters. Their colored feathers brightened the sea with a marvelous appearance at their illumination by the sun’s rays.

There are varieties of birds that are in the vicinity. For instance, there are pelicans and seagulls. Pelicans are seen hovering over the sand, singing sweet melodies that make the atmosphere at the beach vibrant. The seagulls are also observed to be flying over the seawater in small groups. Some of the birds are gathered in groups spreading the wings that cloaked a soft shadow on the gentle water ripples.

Next to the shore, there are sea turtles that seem to enjoy the summer heat from the sun. Their eggs are also seen to be exposed on the sand by the children that play on the shoreline. Bees are seen flying from one flower to another over the sea grapes. The humming of the bees as they gather nectar from the sea flowers attracts insect-eating birds.

Large crowds are observed all over the seashore. These people come to enjoy themselves on the beach at this period of the year. In the sea, people of all ages and sexes are seen swimming and playing with the cool seawater. The scorching heat from the summer sun is felt on the forehead of all individuals.

This makes the people chill themselves in the cool waters of the sea. The children are seen playing beach ball on the shoreline. Some children are also seen pelt each other with sand on the shoreline. Besides, young boys are observed climbing tall palm trees to gather fruits.

What is more, several activities take place along and inside the shoreline. Vendors are seen carrying ice creams and soft drinks all over the shoreline. Views of homes, hotels, and other buildings that run along the peak of the beach are also seen. On the sand where children play, pieces of shells are scattered.

In most cases, children collect the shells for fun. In the shades built along the shoreline, people are seen reading books, journals, and magazines. Some are seen idling on the sand, while few adults are observed playing football.

However, there is a disgusting scene of plastic bags, cigarette butts, food wrappers, and beer bottles along the beach. These items seem to pollute the entire shoreline and the seawater.

Anglers are also observed far into the sea casting large nets into the waters to have a bulk catch of their prey. Some of the anglers are also observed perching on the edge of the shore carrying sticks in their hands. Their faces displayed the anticipation that they had for their prey.

The deep waters of the sea produce a marvelous view for anyone who gazes at the sea. The water is seen to be slowly running low on the shore. Small waves are also observed crashing on the shoreline. The surface of the sea is seen to appear blue in color.

However, some portions are also seen to have the spectrum that results from the sun’s refracted rays. Deep inside the sea, there are high waves that lift boats up and down mightily. The shimmering waves of the sea that are clear and blue mirror the rays of the hot sun. The refreshing breeze that emanates from the seawater is enjoyable.

In conclusion, the beach has a perfect view and activities that are delightful to experience during the summer. It is a place that everyone would love to be at all times.

Sample narrative essay - A day at the beach

essay a day at beach

It was a sunny day at the beach. The sand was hot under our feet. My little brother Xoli started crying. “Pick him up, Busi,” my mother said.

I picked him up. He was so heavy. And his nose was dirty. I didn’t want that snot on my summer top! I put him down and he started crying again. “Pick him up!” my mother shouted. I picked him up again, wishing I didn’t have a baby brother who was always such a pain.

Finally we got to a good spot and spread out the towels. My mother got out her magazine and started reading. I tried to play on my cellphone but the sun was too bright. So I lay down and closed my eyes.

Suddenly I realised it was quiet – too quiet. I sat up and looked for Xoli. He was nowhere around. Then I saw him. He was digging in the sand close to the water and a big wave was coming. “Xoli!” I shouted. But he didn’t hear me.

I started running as fast as I could. My mother had heard me and she came after me too. But we were too late. The huge wave swept him off his feet. I rushed into the water and managed to grab hold of his arm before he could be sucked out to sea. I picked him up. He was spluttering and crying. When I saw he was all right I nearly started crying too. “Why did you go so far?” I started shouting.

But my mother took him from me gently. “He is just a baby, Busi. We should have been watching him.” The two of us sat with Xoli and built a sandcastle. I found shells to decorate the castle and Xoli clapped his hands. My mother went to buy us ice creams.

As I step on the granular surface of the mildly sun-drenched beach, I feel the refreshing gush of ocean air, caressing my nostrils. The water is glistening in pearly evanescence, its serenity humbly interrupted by a thunderous squeaking of the children, valiantly rushing towards the water, only to huddle even faster back, to the safety of terra firma. The circular, luminous ball in the sky is not acknowledging the arrival of noon yet, and the lack of people, sunbathing on the beach feels more than good. As I am walking, I can feel the little grains of sand protruding through my fingers, giving my sore feet a pleasant, tickling sensation. Ever since I was little, I loved walking barefoot, especially on grassy and sandy surfaces. Grass always possessed an earthly cloud-like essence in its gentle plasticity, while sand, coarse and rough at times, felt almost like an always welcome massage. On finally having found a secluded little patch of terrain, adjusted for solitary basking in the auriferous landscape of aquamarine and honey, I seat myself on my hippie-inspired towel, and continue to observe the vastness before me. My introverted meditation is again interrupted by the shrill sounds of children, squeaking in delight. One little girl is particularly loud, yet not in an annoying way, rather in a way that makes one go green with jealousy at seeing someone enjoy something so simple such as running through the shallow part of the ocean, making sure to make as big of a splash as possible. She appears to be four, maybe five years old, with a wetted hair, sticking to her gently tanned face. Her hair is shimmering in the sun, tied with two cherry-colored little bows. On her nose, traces of suntan lotion are still visible, white, urging the skin to soak them up. It was gently and very carefully smeared on by who I assume is her mother, the lady who is lying on a hammock merely a meter away, keeping her little treasure under her hawk gaze constantly. Behind the girl in the little crimson bathing suit, two white dots appear on the horizon; hopeful fishing boats and its crewmen, out for the day. I imagine their sun burnt faces, how their fingers must have soaked up the smell of the ocean, of the fish they take out, like the butcher who, no matter how often and thorough he washes his hands, the faint scent of meat perpetually remains underneath the fingernails, revealing the secret of his profession. The boats swing rhythmically, like a cradle, lulling a baby to sleep. The water is tranquil and sempiternal. Above it, the cerulean image of the sky lies prostrate as far as the eye could see, with little dabs of puffy whiteness smeared over the clear blueness. The sun is beginning to pierce the blue serenity above and below, but nobody seems to mind. More and more people are starting to gather at the beach, forming a miniature ant society, scattered throughout the cinnamon surface greeting the water. They do not mind the smell of decomposing water life forms, which float carelessly along the glass façade of water. It is the smell of saltwater, floating on a breeze and they welcome it for one, heavenly afternoon. When the time comes, they will return to their concrete jungle of car mufflers, busy streets, trash and smog. But now, the moment consumes us all, we are one with nature that spreads its marine perpetuity in front of us and embraces us as her children. She caresses us with her dripping fingers, clings to our bodies in grains of arenaceous particles, brushes past our faces in buoyant wafts of Neptunian air, and lulls our minds in the clement glow of aubade warmth. All of a sudden, I hear music, which is utterly out of tune with the tranquility that this magical place offers. One of the café places on the beach has started playing some modern music, the one that appeals to younger people. For me, it completely disrupts the meditative qualities of the beach. I close my eyes, and endeavor to deafen the sounds of the music, giving emphasis to the squawking of the seagulls and the playful squealing of little children. I open my eyes, and the light is bewildering, yet enchanting at the same time. The people are all black dots on the auburn covering of the beach, like rare black pearls found in only some shells. This reminds me of the uniqueness that we all possess within ourselves, yet which is so easy to forget. The people are scattering around, looking for a place to settle down for the day, and put down their towels in rainbow colors. In a blink of an eye, the beach becomes an anthill of activity, the voices growing louder and louder, as faces grow by the numbers, finally transforming into one big human face that decided to inhabit the beach for the day. This is not the beach I enjoy anymore. The serenity of the place is gone; its meditative abilities have been stripped down to a commercialized noise of reckless polluters. I close my eyes and try to go back to the flapping of the seagulls’ wings and their talking to Mother Nature. The waves of music coming from the cafes and human clamor overwhelm me, and I cannot hear the gentle swaying of the ocean waves anymore. I bury my hands in the sand. It is warm and comforting to know of a constant in life. We will all dissolve, become granular, become one with the universe around us. We will all be given immortality, if only we know to appreciate it. With my eyes still closed, I smile enigmatically at the vast watery panorama in front of me, the soothing sounds of waves crashing against the rocks far away tickle my eardrums. I take the sand in my palm and let it slip through my fingers in waterfalls of sand, joining the granular plethora around me. I smile, because I hear nothing but the water anymore.

Descriptive Essay - At the Beach

Authors Avatar

Gabriel Farrugia

Everyone has a place where they go to escape all the pressures and worries of life.  There is always that one spot that can soothe all your problems and troubles in times of stress.  For me, the beach is the ultimate cure to all of my problems.  While I am there, all of my obligations are suddenly erased.

As I stroll along I can feel the soft smooth sand beneath my feet. I am taken in by the soothing atmosphere that surrounds me.  I let myself absorb the intense rays of the sun on a scorching summer day.  I am calmed by the sounds of the ocean; the regular pounding of the waves restrain all of my worries. As I sit in my chair I can see all the sights of summer; children building sand castles along the ocean’s edge, to my right I observe an elderly couple enjoying a good book.  I am soon at the point where my skin can no longer take the harsh rays of the blistering summer sun. I run as fast as my feet can carry me toward what my body sees as heaven, an endless pool of crystal blue water. I dive into the crashing waves head first. Floating peacefully among the waves, I am unaware of the approaching waves that are soon to break over me. A monstrous wave has just overtaken me; its force knocks me to the sandy bottom of the ocean.  I am refreshed and awakened as I am carried back to shore. Exhausted, I return to my peaceful spot on the beach.  I quickly find myself once again baking under the warmth of the summer sun.

Join now!

As the daylight falls to the darkness of night I can feel the change in temperature on my skin. A chilly mist can be felt in the wind blowing off the calm sea. Now that I am relaxed, I allow myself to close my eyes and drift off for a peaceful nap. I am soon awoken but the sounds of birds chirping and flying in random directions. I open my eyes; the setting sun hangs in the sky like a red-orange balloon off in the distance.

This is a preview of the whole essay

I find myself alone on the beach.  The surf has ceased to crash on the shores, the calm waves gently roll onto the sand.  The sky is transformed into a colourful horizon; filled with endless streams of purple and blue. On my walk back along the sand I am reminded of those obligations that have evaded me on my peaceful journey. Monday brings school and work; however, I am not the least upset. I do not see Monday as the start of a long week of tough work; I see it as a countdown. Six more days until I can once more drift off to the place where all the pressures and worries of life seem to just disappear.

Descriptive Essay about the Beach

A descriptive essay about the beach is one of the write ups you may be required to come up with in your English learning courses. It’s about giving a vivid depiction of your encounters at the seashore. In our previous post about how to write a descriptive essay, we explained the need for students to paint the picture of the object in the readers mind. The main objective is to make the audience feel as if they were involved in the experience. Read on essays based on different types parenting style samples.

This kind of writing will inspire you to explore your linguistic prowess as well as imagination. The success is achieved if your audience resonates with your words. To make this possible, you need to have ‘thoughts that glow’ as well as ‘words that flow’.

If you’re required to write a descriptive essay about the beach, there are things you should put to consideration. This post is all about helping you get a grade A in such an assignment.

Tips on Writing the Best Descriptive Essay

  • Have experience about the beach. It’s critical that you get conversant with what you are writing about. If you haven’t visited the seashore, try reading widely about the experience. Or, grab a documentary movie.
  • Keep your statements clear and concise. Vague information may not only be confusing but also boring.
  • Describe every aspect of the beach. Write about the weather, water, soil, sound, smell, sky, horizon, sun, flora and fauna. You can also talk about the people at the beach. Don’t forget your feelings.
  • Have a logical organization. You can choose to pick a theme for every paragraph. Or, you can keep a chronological flow. Also, be sure to have an introduction and conclusion paragraph.
  • Remember to review your work after writing.

Free Descriptive Essay Samples About the Beach

Last summer, I had the chance to visit my aunt at her coastal home. The octogenarian , I have to admit, lives in one of the world’s most serene places. The beach is a fantastic phenomenon and the fun that comes along with it is overwhelming. Two weeks into the visit, my cousins took me to the seashore, and I just couldn’t get enough of it. I fell in love with the splashing waters and cool breeze. I hated that evening would come and we’d have to leave the blissful sensation of the beach. I nonetheless promised myself to make the most out of the short time we would spend there.

We set out early in the morning with our cameras and light shorts. A light breeze blew and it took my soul with it. I felt like I was in a whole new world. The wind brought fresh air to my nostrils and I just couldn’t help but pump as much as I could. It not only filled my lungs with rejuvenating oxygen, but also my mind with a hope of having the best day of my life. My ears weren’t left behind either. It’s like the fresh air was singing melodious blues as we walked. I was sure experiencing something I’d never experienced before.

We arrived on our scooter right on time for the rising sun. Never in my life had I seen such a majestic view. We’d left home early on right before the sun would mark its territories. And, apparently, our cameras were getting the best work they’d had for years. Towards the east, the sky was literally burning. The first rays were already throwing their warmth across the sky. They were doing just like cheerleaders would do during an NFA match. Or, better still, like the escort guards from the Secret Service do before the Head of State arrives.

The rays did their job pretty fine. They were yellow and glittered like the flames of an enormous camping bonfire! While the sky was showing its beauty, the sea was glittering and reflecting back. It was as if they were partners colluding to welcome a big guest. The yellow glare made our photography interesting and every shot was worth it.

The sun finally hit the surface. The ground acknowledged its presence and started glittering. The tiny sand particles shed silver lights all over the beach. The sweet rays caressed my skin and I now understood why everyone at the seashore liked to expose theirs. It was a gentle warmth, I have to say!

My excitement was rejuvenated. But I couldn’t possibly beat the birds. They shouted with a wild joy. They jumped up and down. I saw several of them chase after sea creatures. It was marvelous watching the birds dive into the water and suddenly shoot up into the sky like rockets. No sooner had we joined them into the diving than people started coming out of their homes. The shore was flocked now. Some came for entertainment while others were looking for fishing grounds. It was a beehive of activities I tell you.

When evening came, it was yet another scenery in the sky as the sun dived into horizons of the sea. People started going back to their homes and the birds gradually became silent. The evening breeze blew, bringing another refreshing smell of the salty water to my nostrils. Waves of water splashed onto the coral reefs as the tides took new positions. The fishermen set out their nets as if their day was just beginning. Suddenly, my aunt was calling. She knew we were having too much fun, and that we’d possibly get late.

Sample 2: A Day at the Beach

We arrive at the seashore at day break. Bright yellow rays of the sun greet us. Their golden mien reflects on the surface of the water. The sun – the main guest – hasn’t arrived yet, but the beach is well lit already. The blue cloudless sky is overly yellow towards the east, which alerts that the sun will be ruling the day beginning soon. A breeze blows by, filled with a refreshing smell of the salty sea water. It gets me reminiscing about my childhood. I get nostalgic of molding magnificence with the sea sand. But today is another day altogether. I’m far older, with a wife, a son, and a daughter. Today is their day. I am just a companion.

The sun is now in full control of the seashore and its effects can be felt by everyone. It’s warm, and the air is filled with moisture from the sea. The ground is mildly warm, and the fine sand particles are glittering like scattered pieces of silver. I can’t help but keep getting strands of my hair off my sight as the wind blows them wildly. My wife’s case is more serious. But she looks gorgeous at the beach and seeing her playing with my kids makes me feel how quick I’ve grown and transformed. I look back at my childhood with a reassuring gaze as I watch my two bundles of joy run alongside their mother in the warm sand at the shore.

The birds stop singing now. Their entertainment about the new day is gone and they are focused on food search. It’s fun to watch them jump into the water, capture crabs and fishes, before darting into the air at electric speeds, like shooting stars.

My son is dying to swim. I know this side of the ocean isn’t crocodile- or shark-infested, but I still want to be sure. I remember that as young boys, we were so fond of swimming until when one day we saw a scary scaly rock moving on the water. It looked like a submarine that kept emerging and submerging. One boy yelled after he recognized it was a baby crocodile. I just feared reptiles and he saved us from what would be an end of an era for us. After confirming that it is safe to swim, I allow my kids to swim on one of the shallow waters around us.

I notice I am not the only one who cares about my children. A few yards away, a kingfisher is already teaching her chicks how to get food. They descend from the palm tree at the edge of the sea. The baby kingfisher can’t swim but her mum is doing all she can to offer the help. I also take a snap of a school of dolphins. They are far from the beach but with the help of my binoculars, my wife and I enjoy the glamor of seeing them jump up and take dives as they chase a boat.

It’s evening now. My family is happy that they have had as much fun as they’d hoped for. We’ve already eaten roasted fish from the lake for lunch. The beach, flocked with swimmers and sunbathers a few moments ago, is now getting less busy. Fishermen are starting their night shifts. The sun is already diving into the horizon of the water, leaving behind a huge yellow light. Birds start to sing again. It’s time for me to drive my family back home.

The beach is the place I go to whenever I need to relax and forget about all the hustles of life and just enjoy myself. As usual, my last visit to there was a memorable one. Already in my beach attire, a draught blew across the sea sweeping away with it my spirit. The sun split its way through the scattered cumulus clouds as if it was shying away from giving some light. As I took in a breath of fresh air, my nose was tingled by the smell of the salty sea. A mine field of corals made up the beach sand, with an abundance of multicolored sea shells. A bed of blankets was however formed by the sand at the same time. Like my previous visit, this visit was promising to be one filled with immense joy and relaxation.

My heart somehow pounded like a drum-set of an orchestra from the way the beach sand flowed onto my feet and tickled my toes. The feeling was delicate especially given that the sand grains were so fine it was almost impossible to see them through the human eye. The sea waves soothed me through a dulcet lullaby thus drawing me closer to them as I reminisced my childhood. It was like they were giving me an invitation with wide open arms. However, my feet would not oblige at this time because they were penetrated by the frigid waves. So, I just sat down with my head raised to the sky as I watched the sun stretch out and make its way across the sky.

The warm sun rays gradually glowed as minutes passed by, reaching down to me and giving me a shining streak of light as if to tell me, “Hey, hold my hand!” I received an immediate boost of excitement as the blazing light pierced through my cold skin. Tracing its way up the sky, the sun distributed its light to everything it could lay its sight on. Birds flying across the sky trying to claim it for themselves were singing sweet melodies with high spirits into my ears. From the sun rays, the sky turned into an illuminated shimmering blue color from a dark misty indigo one. The scattered rainless clouds that were initially blocking sun rays melted away into thin air and gave way for the water to heat up.

I slowly made my way to the edge of the beach once again and immersed my toe into the now swiftly heating up water. I hastily withdrew it as it felt like it was melting away into the sea in spite of having been numb before. The pungent smell that came from decayed algae filled the air and my acidic stomach responded by turning to its side. I could hear the sounds of fish that were possibly calling for attention from under the sea. I could at the same time tell that the fish were afraid of the sea creatures that were hungrily preying on smaller water creatures for lunch. This was a survival tactic, I could tell.

As the evening was drawing, people poured onto the beach to enjoy the serenity and perfect weather. Children ran up and down as laughter filled up every corner of the beach and people even played beach football and volleyball. The day was finally coming to an end and one by one, people started leaving slowly after what had been a day full of excitement. It was unfortunate that as much as I had wanted to continue staying on the beach and continue undergoing this memorable experience, my turn to go home finally came. I left with a heart filled with happiness and peace and a tired body and promised myself that I would go back there as many times as I would be able to.

Essay about the Beach

Diamond beach is what most people would call “a little paradise or a piece of heaven on earth.” The spectacular, flawless white beach stretches with no limit for the eye as it goes across the ocean so amazingly. Just by gazing at the endless sands, as the sun’s rays rest on the waters freshly emerging from their resting place, anyone would be astounded by the beauty of nature. The clouds timidly exposed as the sky beams blue making it obvious that this would be a beautiful day. It is not hard to hear the ocean whisper its promises for the day due to the serenity of diamond, as the graceful sounds of songbirds light up the morning mood. The reigning feeling is that of a soothing calmness that makes life difficult for an iota of gloom. Nature seems to be passing across the message that a great day filled with happiness and devoid of mishaps should be expected.

The smell of fresh air taking you away from all the hustles and bustles of a polluted environment in an ordinary day is nothing you would want to miss. In a world where air pollution has become so rampant, I believe allowing everyone to experience the fresh breeze would be a great lesson for conserving our ecosystem. The freshness and tranquility of the atmosphere at Diamond beach defines a habitable ecosystem that every living thing deserves to experience. Being at this beach makes you appreciate that this world is truly a beautiful place. You forget all your worries as your mind sinks into the serenity making you want to live forever. It is one place that reminds us to appreciate life and conserves the beauty of nature. It directly talks to us to acknowledge that life does not have to be first-paced all the time. It makes the importance of taking time off to real and unwind become so real and necessary.

Diamond beach is a rare and precious place to be. I know millions of beaches exist globally, but none is like the diamond beach. The light kisses from the coastal breeze, the smell freshness, the purity of the sand, and the crimson beauty of water is out of this world. Regardless of whichever angle you may view the beach from, you will not miss noticing the splendor of this natural feature. Every step in the beach leaves fine-grained sand shifting as if paving the way for the next step you take. With every motion forward, you feel like you are walking on freshly fallen snow. The only difference is that the crystalline white blanket bequeathed by the winter normally is cold but on the beach, it is warm thanks to the sun rays.

During the day, you cannot fail to notice a change in the cute sand particles as they form a golden reflection from the sun. It appears as if the sun rays are trapped inside the unmelting sand crystals forming the beautiful yellow golden color. Interestingly, upon picking the sand gravels, they rest on your palm like diamond crystals illuminating a white color between your fingers. Despite the midday heat, being at the beach at this time is an opportunity to witness its brightness entirely. The fact that it is conserved as a private beach adds to its numerous advantages and lessens congestion giving everyone a chance to connect with nature undisturbed. It is almost impossible not to notice the ocean at this point of the day. It waves curl up and down, rolling in white tipped shapes, spreading like fine silky laces over the beach. The way they softly crash on the beach or violently splash their waters overboard is simply stunning. The gentle sound that emanates from their contact with the beach makes the feeling even more fulfilling.

If the ocean were a person, I would describe it in many ways. It would be at one point introverted, calm, still, graceful but at another point extroverted, throwing waves aggressively, outgoing and interactive. The behavior of the ocean cannot be described as noisy despite all the commotion that appears to be going on. Only slight wave sounds that a keen soul would hear. I think the ocean has many secrets it would share with people if it could talk. For me, its silent sounds take me back to a time of reflecting and appreciating life. They give new meaning to life. With every turn of the wave that comes and goes, I remember we are all passing by in this world, and the best thing to do is appreciate what we have, before the next wave takes over. For a moment, I am lost in thoughts when a palm leaf drops on my silky dress and brings me back to reality.

It is almost impossible to go on discussing diamond without describing the splendid physical environment that surrounds the beach. The physical environment of the beach is superb. The first thing that I notice as I focus my attention on the beach is the relaxation mood. People from all age groups can be seen on beach seats with colorful costumes and fluffy towels. I guess they are just from enjoying a swim. On that note, I should not forget to state that lovers of swimming will enjoy being in Diamond. The water temperature is never hot or cold but perfect for a swim. Small adorable children in white costumes appear like angels creating sand castles as others run across to float kites on the cool breeze. The teens are frolicking with beach balls having a time of their lives as the young adults cuddle, hold hands, and share special moments while taking a walk along the shoreline.

A few meters away a particular group of people can be seen excluded for religious reasons. As I draw my focus to that group, I realize that they are having an outdoor yoga class. What a great place to connect with your internal senses and spirituality. Diamond is definitely the place to be for yoga especially during morning or evening hours. There is little interruption and the silence is just what you need. Upon inquiring from one of the yoga instructors, I am told that the classes have been going on for a while in the same spot. According to the instructor, people have found peace in their lives since they started visiting Diamond beach for yoga. If you love yoga, you have found a recreation and a spiritual connection site.

Diamond beach stands out in the Caribbean Island of modern beach houses giving the inhabitants a panoramic ocean view. The mastermind behind the exterior was Chad while Davis studio aided with the interior and Enzo the landscaping to give an elegant piece of artwork. The prowess and architectural expertise is incredible as everyone who walks to the beach never fails to notice the splendor. Attractive colors that allow calm and light are a perfect complement to the beach which is bright during the day. The Hi-tech beach houses which have been designed in the latest architectural designs are similar, all having balconies facing the sandy beach. From the balcony, you enjoy seeing the spectacular ocean view as lounges of water cover up the entire place. Those living or visiting Diamond enjoy beautiful weather which cannot be described as sunny or humid. It is just perfect.

Serving the visitors, tourists, and locals in the beach is the Diamond hotel. It’s shaped like a diamond and is an exquisite place to be if you plan to spend a few days on the beach and do not live nearby. They offer great room services and maintain a high level of hygiene and cleanliness with excellent customer care services. The rooms are ample and spacious with perfect temperatures and an excellent view of the beach. You get to enjoy free internet connection, music system, and laptops for use while you enjoy visiting the beach. The rates are cost-friendly as the hotel packages cater for people from all age groups. If you have toddlers, you should not worry as there are special cots and nurses to attend to children. If you have special needs, the staircase and special rooms have been modified to meet them. The reception, ambiance, and hospitality of the hotel will make you stay longer. Recreational activities are available with a fully-serviced gym for fitness, spa, massage, and beauty parlor to make you gorgeous as you go out. Besides the remarkable fitness and beauty services, there are spectacular mouthwatering and finger-licking delicacies to choose from. The food is freshly served upon placing an order while alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are also in plenty. In general thus, visiting Diamond beach is a memorable and magnificent experience. Getting a chance to interact with the lovely, friendly Caribbean people and share in their rich dance culture could even make you want to change your nationality.

Beach day etiquette: What to do and public behaviors to avoid

Summer's here and that means beach season is officially underway.

With only a few all-too-brief months to get your fill of fun-in-the-sun , chances are good that you've got at least one trip to the shore planned, whether it's seaside, on a lake or anywhere else where water meets the sand.

And guess what? So does everyone else.

You're far from the only one who's got beach plans this summer and that almost certainly means packed parking lots, blanket-to-blanket crowds and sharing the sunshine with a whole lotta other people.

Which means there are a few beach etiquette rules to keep in mind.

Because while you may enjoy listening to your summer songs playlist at top volume, feeding the seagulls your leftover pretzels or setting up a small empire of tents in the sand , your fellow beach-goers may not feel quite the same way.

“Anytime we have a communal experience such as going to the beach, it's really important that we are mindful of how our conduct affects the enjoyment of a common resource with others," says Thomas Farley , aka Mister Manners, etiquette expert and frequent TODAY contributor.

That said, it's also important for beach-goers to remember that they're in a public space.

“We're not on a private beach. This is not a beach just for us and there are going to be some behaviors that we have to accept and acknowledge are part of the equation,” Farley explains.

To help determine what is and what isn't proper beach protocol, TODAY.com asked Farley and Diane Gottsman , etiquette expert and founder of The Protocol School of Texas, to weigh in on the dos and don'ts of beach etiquette.

Don't own the beach

Lifeguard

Got a big crowd? Lots of chairs and tents? No problem. Just keep it contained and be mindful if someone else has already set up shop nearby.

“If space allows, it's especially important that you not crowd anyone else and that you give everyone ample space when you decide how you're going to position your own blanket,” says Farley.

More than that, if you're setting up an encampment of sorts, don't do it directly in front of someone else.

“While a tent is great for avoiding sun exposure, setting up large tents and blocking the view of others is not polite,” says Gottsman. “Be respectful of your neighbor and you might want to ask if your extra-large, jumbo tent is blocking their view of the beach.”

Do secure your site

Beach umbrella and chair on sand at beach

After you've settled on the perfect spot, there are few things to do while inhabiting your temporary slice of heaven, starting with securing your beach necessities.

“The umbrella has to be secured very, very deep into the sand so that it's not going to blow away and become a projectile,” says Farley. “Heaven forbid, you're down at the water taking a swim and your umbrella decides it's going to take a swim next.”

Pack up and put away your food as well. This ensures that snacks don't blow away while unattended, plus stowing food will keep seagulls and other local creatures at bay.

And if you're thinking of feeding the beach birds your leftovers, don't.

“You may love the seagulls and other beach creatures, but please don’t feed them,” says Gottsman. “Not only is it scary to be overcome by a flock of birds, but it also encourages them to search for human food rather than using their hunting skills and their natural ability to forage and hunt for their food.”

Don't be the beach DJ

woman relaxing with friends on tropical beach

Most everyone loves listening to music on the beach, but here's the catch: Not everyone wants to listen to your music.

So, sure, bring your bluetooth speaker and enjoy some tunes, but keep it within reason.

“Library-like silence is simply not going to happen on a public beach and that’s not a realistic expectation,” Farley says.

However, according to Farley, unless someone has appointed you and your crew as official beach DJs, turn the music down.

“It should radiate, more or less, for your own blanket area and not for others,” he says.

Gottsman agrees.

“Even if the lyrics are not offensive, the loud volume makes it offensive to others around you,” she says.

Don't create a sand, sunscreen or scent storm

Woman applying sunscreen at beach

If you've ever been blinded by a cloud of sand when your beach neighbor shakes out their blanket or towel while packing up, this one's for you.

“We're at the mercy of Mother Nature when we're at the beach in so many ways,” explains Farley. “There's winds, there's waves and it's vital that we not just shake out a blanket without first thinking, ‘Which way is the sand going to go?’”

The same goes for walking through the sand. As you're passing by other patrons, try to keep your sand spray to a minimum so that you aren't kicking up a mess on someone else's belongings.

Spray sunscreen is also easily carried along the wind and into the eyes and mouths of any neighbors who might, unfortunately, be downstream.

“Sand, scent and sunscreen are all meant to stay close to your own area,” says Gottsman. “Avoid smoke and heavy perfumes on the beach. Anything offensive to the nose, eyes and ears is off limits.”

Don't let your kids or pets go unattended

Girl sitting by the seashore at the beach

Many beaches don't allow pets of any kind, but if yours does, be a good neighbor and keep your dog or other animal in check.

And, if you're enjoying the day with your family, it goes without saying, keep an eye on the kids, too.

“You are responsible for watching your own kids and pets,” says Gottman. “Even if you are with friends or other family members, they should not feel obligated to watch your kids or pets if they are wandering off or getting too close to the ocean. They are on vacation and want to enjoy a relaxing visit to the beach.”

The TL;DR: Watch your flock and make sure your flock is watching their manners.

Don't disrupt other beach-goers with games

woman playing with her dog on the beach

Whether your beach game of choice is football, baseball, volleyball, paddleball or frisbee, keep it contained or go somewhere less populated to avoid bothering unsuspecting beach-goers.

“Beach activities are all part of the fun,” says Farley. “But make sure that your fun doesn't become someone else's injury.”

That means paying attention and ensuring that your ball or anything else isn't hitting other people or constantly landing on their blanket, as well as checking out what's around you before boogie-boarding to avoid colliding with someone else in the water.

That said, it's a beach and sometimes things happen. And when they do, Farley suggests smiling and simply moving on.

Don't leave holes in the sand

Boy Digging at Beach

When enjoying a day on the beach, it's par for the course to build a towering castle (don't forget the moat) and, naturally, dig a few holes. When you do, fill them in when you leave, lest an unsuspecting patron step or fall in and get hurt.

“If you dig a hole for a fire or are simply making sand castles and digging trenches, leave the area the same or better than you found it. Avoid leaving large holes in the sand that someone could step into and lose their footing,” says Gottsman.

Don't leave your trash

Garbage on a beach

The worst of all beach infractions is littering or leaving without carrying out your trash, according to Farley.

Far too often, people will either leave their trash behind or, if the trash receptacle is full, leave their bag on top of or next to it, instead of taking their garbage with them.

“Don't just gently place your barbecue goods and your sandwich leftovers on top of that trash bin because they are most certainly going to wind up blowing down the beach and potentially in the water. And that's the resource that we're all there to appreciate,” he says.

So, if it can't stash your trash properly in appropriate bin, bring your trash home and find somewhere else to toss it.

Do keep your words and actions family-friendly

Beach PDA

Just married? Celebrating your anniversary? Congrats! However, save the gratuitous PDA for a less-public time and place. The same goes for unsavory conversation.

Keep your conversations at least PG-13-rated if others are within earshot.

“Be mindful of the things that you're saying and the things that you're talking about, particularly your language, especially if there are younger children nearby,” says Farley. “In other words: no salty language, no cursing and no deep details about the fling that you had the night before.”

The same goes for changing clothes, which Gottman says to do in private. “The beach is not the place to change from your street clothes to your bathing suit. Even if you think you are alone, there are hotel windows and eyes all around,” she says.

Don't disregard beach chair protocol

Couple relax on white sand beach, palm tree

Whether you're staying at a resort, hotel or any other property that provides beach chairs, follow proper beach-chair etiquette.

"If someone has reserved special chairs for the beach from their hotel, don’t claim them until the rightful renters arrive,” says Gottman.

At the same time, she cautions that guests shouldn't take more than they need.

“Even on a beach vacation, the hotel pool and lounge chairs are a hot commodity. If you plan to spend the day by the pool, get there early and claim your chair, but don’t string out eight chairs when there are only three family members," Gottman says.

Russia blames U.S. for 'barbaric' Ukrainian attack on Crimea, summons ambassador

A person holds a Crimean flag during a rally

Russia summoned the U.S. ambassador and vowed retaliation Monday after blaming Washington for a deadly strike on a strategic port in occupied Crimea, claiming U.S.-supplied missiles were used in the attack.

The strike left at least four people dead and more than 150 injured in one of the biggest attacks on the Russian-annexed peninsula in recent months.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said four U.S.-provided Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) rockets, were intercepted over the city of Sevastopol, but fragments from the fifth rocket led to “numerous casualties among civilians” on the ground.

“All flight missions for the American ATACMS operational-tactical missiles are entered by American specialists based on U.S.’ own satellite reconnaissance data,” the ministry said in a statement. “Therefore, responsibility for the deliberate missile attack on civilians in Sevastopol lies primarily with Washington, which supplied these weapons to Ukraine, as well as the Kyiv regime, from whose territory this attack was launched.”

NBC News could not independently confirm what type of weapons were used in the attack. The U.S. has been providing Ukraine with military aid to defend against Russia’s invasion, which started in February 2022. The Biden administration recently gave Ukraine permission to use American weapons to strike inside Russia , two American officials told NBC News.

The White House and the State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Russian foreign ministry said Monday it summoned U.S. ambassador Lynne Tracy over the attack to reiterate that Washington bears equal responsibility with Kyiv for "this atrocity,” and that there will be retaliation.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and considers it part of Russia, though it remains internationally recognized as Ukrainian territory.

“Such actions will not go unanswered,” the ministry added.

Mikhail Razvozhayev, the city’s Moscow-installed governor, said two children were among the dead and that 151 people were injured, of which more than 80 were hospitalized.

The governor declared Monday a day of mourning in the city and said he has been visiting the injured in the hospitals. Russian President Vladimir Putin called him immediately after the attack and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, Razvozhayev added.

The governor accused Kyiv authorities of striking “on the sly” at a time when many residents were returning from church and the celebrations of the Orthodox holiday of Holy Trinity or were on the beach with their children.

His deputy Alexander Kulagin also told Russian state news agency Tass that many among the injured were at the beach during the attack.

Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said doctors were being sent from the capital to provide all necessary assistance, and Moscow clinics were ready to receive victims. Some patients would be airlifted to Moscow for treatment, Razvozhayev said Monday.

Tass reported Monday that Razvozhayev had also introduced a state of regional emergency in Sevastopol in the aftermath of the attack.

There was no immediate reaction from Kyiv. The country’s ministry of defense, ministry of foreign affairs and military officials did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has called the attack “an act of terrorism” carried out with U.S. weapons that should be condemned by the United Nations. Moscow-appointed head of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, said the incident was “a barbaric, unscrupulous terrorist attack.”

Russian authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the attack.

Also on Sunday, Ukrainian authorities reciprocated with accusations of terrorism against civilians, reporting the latest deadly Russian strike on the border city of Kharkiv.

Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said Russia continued to attack civilian infrastructure in the city with aerial bombs. The strikes on Sunday killed one person and injured 11, Syniehubov said, adding that the latest attack left part of Kharkiv without power, shutting down the metro in the country’s second largest city.

It comes just a day after three people were killed and 41 were injured in another attack on Kharkiv that damaged a five-story residential building, according to Syniehubov.

A Day At The Beach Essay

A day at the beach is a perfect way to relax and enjoy the summer sun. The colors of the sand and sea are so relaxing, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore is just mesmerizing. Spending a day at the beach is definitely a must-do during the summertime!

On a hot, smothering day, my pals and I decided that it was a good day to go to the beach. As we drove into Newport Beach in Rhode Island, the Sun’s bright yellow pellet boiling in the sky, I could see that things were getting chilly. The open-air temperature was dropping steadily and traffic lanes were narrowing down, which meant we were nearing the beach.

As we finally got there, we parked the car and walked to the shore. I could feel the shining Sun beating down on my skin, warming my body up instantly. I could see the long expanse of the shoreline—the waves crashing against the rocks, seagulls flying in the sky, people playing volleyball on the sand, children building sandcastles, couples walking hand in hand. It was a scene of tranquility and peace.

The first thing I did was dip my toes in the water to test the temperature. The water was freezing cold! I quickly took my feet out and decided to go for a walk instead. I walked along the shore, letting the water flow over my feet every now and then. The cold water was refreshing and invigorating. After a while, I sat down on the sand and watched as the waves rolled in, one after the other. It was mesmerizing.

The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, the smell of salt in the air, the feel of sand between my toes—it was all so calming and relaxing. I could feel all my worries and stress melting away. I felt like I could sit there forever and just soak in the peace and serenity of the moment.

Eventually, my friends came to join me and we spent the rest of the day swimming, playing beach games, and just enjoying each other’s company. It was a day well-spent indeed.

Colorful umbrellas, beach balls, and towels dotted the shoreline as people enjoyed a beautiful day at the beach. The sound of laughter and shouting could be heard over the sound of waves crashing against the rocks. Children were playing in the sand, building sandcastles or digging holes. Adults were sunbathing, reading books, or chatting with friends. Couples were walking hand in hand, enjoying the romantic scenery.

The water was a deep blue and the sky was a clear, bright blue. The sun was a huge yellow ball that blazed in the sky, sending its rays down to Earth. The beach was the perfect place to spend a hot, summer day.

We pulled into a parking place and set out for a stroll across the scorching black asphalt, which radiated heat from the sun. I could see across the silver lagoon, which was tinted blue by the sea. The sand burned my feet as soon as I put them on the silt white sand. Waves crashing and unruffled sea breeze blowing By, I could hear sounds of waves colliding and felt the soothing sea wind brush against me.

I set my beach items such as my castle, sunscreen, and towel on the sand. After I was all situated I started walking towards the water, which looked like a never-ending abyss. As I walked in further the temperature of the water gradually decreased making it feel therapeutic. Now that I was fully submerged in the water I could feel my body slowly relaxing from head to toe.

All my worries and stressors from school felt like they disappeared into oblivion. laying there for what felt like hours but were only minutes, I realized how blessed I am to have this moment right now. Moments like these are what we live for; moments that make us feel truly alive. Experiencing nature and its beauty is one way to achieve pure bliss. Who knew something as simple as going to the beach could provide me with such serenity and peace? As I slowly walked back to my stuff on the shore, I felt grateful for this moment, this day, and this life.

This is a beautiful piece about enjoying a day at the beach. The author describes the scene in great detail, from the sound of the waves crashing to the feel of the sand on their feet. They also reflect on how moments like these are what we live for – moments that make us feel truly alive. This is a great reminder to take time to appreciate the simple things in life that can bring us joy.

As I glanced around my surroundings, the beach was crowded with individuals. People lay down on various colored beach towels to get a sunbathe towards my right, while others are on an umbrella in order to get some rays. I could see many youngsters decorating their sandcastles with smooth round seashells as I looked down.

The smell of suntan lotion and BBQ’s fill the air as I begin to walk on the sand. The sand is warm and feels good as it rubs against my feet. As I get closer to the water, I could see that the ocean was a deep blue color and there were people walking, running, biking or just simply sitting on the beach enjoying their day.

Nearby, I could hear the sound of waves crashing against rocks and seagulls squawking in the distance. The sound of waves crashing makes me feel calm and relaxed. Sitting down on the beach, I let the sun hit my face as I close my eyes and enjoy the moment.

La Cocina moving from St. Augustine Beach to downtown

When tourists visit a place like St. Augustine, restaurant owner Norberto Jaramillo has found that they rarely want to eat in the hotel restaurant.

That is why he is moving La Cocina International Restaurant from Castillo Real Resort Hotel at 530 A1A Beach Blvd. in St. Augustine Beach to lease the space at the top of the San Sebastian Winery at 157 King St. in historic downtown St. Augustine.

La Cocina International Restaurant closed Sunday. The new restaurant is called La Cocina in the Cellar Upstairs and will have a similar upscale dinner menu.

“Can you name the truck with four-wheel drive, smells like a steak, and seats 35?”

Back in 1998, “The Simpsons” joked about the Canyonero, an SUV so big that they were obviously kidding. At that time, it was preposterous to think anyone would drive something that was “12 yards long, two lanes wide, 65 tons of American Pride.”

In 2024, that joke isn’t far from reality.

And our reality is one where more pedestrians and bicyclists are getting killed on U.S. streets than at any time in the past 45 years – over 1,000 bicyclists and 7,500 pedestrians in 2022 alone.

Vehicle size is a big part of this problem. A recent paper by urban economist Justin Tyndall found that increasing the front-end height of a vehicle by roughly 4 inches (10 centimeters) increases the chance of a pedestrian fatality by 22% . The risk increases by 31% for female pedestrians or those over 65 years, and by 81% for children.

It’s hard to argue with physics, so there is a certain logic in blaming cars for rising traffic deaths. In fact, if a bicyclist is hit by a pickup truck instead of a car, Tyndall suggests that they are 291% more likely to die.

Yet automakers have long asserted that if everyone simply followed the rules of the road, nobody would die. Vehicle size is irrelevant to that assertion.

My discipline, traffic engineering , acts similarly. We underestimate our role in perpetuating bad outcomes, as well as the role that better engineering can play in designing safer communities and streets.

A bicycle, painted white and decorated with flowers, attached to a street pole at an urban intersection.

Millions of road deaths

How bad are the bad outcomes? The U.S. has been tracking car-related road deaths since 1899. As a country, we hit the threshold of 1 million cumulative deaths in 1953, 2 million in 1975 and 3 million in 1998. While the past several years of data have not yet been released, I estimate that the U.S. topped 4 million total road deaths sometime in the spring of 2024.

How many of those are pedestrians and bicyclists? Analysts didn’t do a great job of separating out the pedestrian and cyclist deaths in the early years , but based on later trends, my estimate is that some 930,000 pedestrians and bicyclists have been killed by automobiles in the U.S.

How many of those deaths do we blame on big cars or bad streets? The answer is, very few.

As I show in my new book, “ Killed by a Traffic Engineer: Shattering the Delusion that Science Underlies our Transportation System ,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calls road user error the “ critical reason” behind 94% of crashes, injuries and deaths .

Crash data backs that up.

Police investigate crashes and inevitably look to see which road users, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, are most at fault. It’s easy to do because in almost any crash, road user error appears to be the obvious problem.

This approach helps insurance companies figure out who needs to pay. It also helps automakers and traffic engineers rationalize away all these deaths. Everyone – except the families and friends of these 4 million victims – goes to sleep at night feeling good that bad-behaving road users just need more education or better enforcement.

But road user error only scratches the surface of the problem.

Who creates dangerous streets?

When traffic engineers build an overly wide street that looks more like a freeway , and a speeding driver in a Canyonero crashes, subsequent crash data blames the driver for speeding.

When traffic engineers provide lousy crosswalks separated by long distances , and someone jaywalks and gets hit by that speeding Canyonero driver, one or both of these road users will be blamed in the official crash report.

And when automakers build gargantuan vehicles that can easily go double the speed limit and fill them with distracting touchscreens , crash data will still blame the road users for almost anything bad that happens.

These are the sorts of systemic conditions that lead to many so-called road user errors. Look just below the surface, though, and it becomes clear that many human errors represent the typical, rational behaviors of typical, rational road users given the transportation system and vehicle options we put in front of them.

Look more deeply, and you can start to see how our underlying crash data gives everyone a pass but the road users themselves. Everyone wants a data-driven approach to road safety, but today’s standard view of crash data lets automakers, insurance companies and policymakers who shape vehicle safety standards off the hook for embiggening these ever-larger cars and light-duty trucks.

It also absolves traffic engineers, planners and policymakers of blame for creating a transportation system where for most Americans, the only rational choice for getting around is a car .

Understanding road behavior

Automakers want to sell cars and make money. And if bigger SUVs seem safer to potential customers, while also being much more profitable , it’s easy to see how interactions between road users and car companies – making seemingly rational decisions – have devolved into an SUV arms race.

Even though these same vehicles are less safe for pedestrians, bicyclists and those in opposing vehicles , the current data-driven approach to road safety misses that part of the story.

This can’t all be fixed at once. But by pursuing business as usual, automakers and traffic engineers will continue wasting money on victim-blaming campaigns or billboards placed high over a road telling drivers to pay attention to the road .

A better starting point would be remaking the U.S.’s allegedly data-driven approach to road safety by reinventing our understanding of the crash data that informs it all.

The key is starting to ask why. Why did these road users act as they did? Why didn’t they follow the rules that were laid out for them? Bad road user behavior shouldn’t be excused, but a bit of digging below the surface of crash data unearths a completely different story.

Figuring out which road user is most at fault may be useful for law enforcement and insurance companies, but it doesn’t give transportation engineers, planners, policymakers or automakers much insight into what they can do better. Even worse, it has kept them from realizing that they might be doing anything wrong.

Byron Bay stripped of nudist beach after no alternative found for clothing-optional zone

Naked protesters stand with their backs to the camera on a beach.

Beachgoers on the NSW far north coast who fancy a dip in their birthday suits have been stripped of a place to swim after it was announced a popular nudist beach will soon close.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will shut down the clothing-optional area at Tyagarah Nature Reserve, near Byron Bay, by August 30.

Byron Shire Council approved the area in 1998, but a recent NPWS land survey revealed that the site came under its jurisdiction.

NPWS met representatives from NSW Police, businesses, community groups and naturists in March to discuss alternative locations for a nude beach.

In a statement, it said no viable alternatives were found.

Relief for residents

Long-time resident Gwen Gould said she was celebrating the news, which marked the end of a long campaign.

"We've worked for about eight years on trying to have this closed down," she said.

In 2018, Byron Shire Council rejected plans to abolish the clothing-optional area despite complaints about lewd behaviour and sex pests at the site.

"People say, 'Oh, we're prudes'. We're not prudes," Ms Gould said.

"We just could not tolerate the sexual, inappropriate behaviour that was happening down there so often, which made it totally unsafe for locals to even walk down the road to the beach without being accosted.

"I feel sadness for the people that want to go naked, but they were having their freedom at the expense of ours."

The backs of naked people who are standing in a line on a shore facing towards the ocean.

Sad day for local naturists

Northern Rivers Naturists president Bradley Benham said it was disappointing but not a surprise.

"The stakeholder meeting at the time did feel very much like lip service, especially when they (NPWS) then ghosted us and didn’t reply to emails and things like that," he said.

Mr Benham believed some people would still use the beach without clothes despite the rule change.

"The beach has been operating as a legal clothes-optional beach for 25 years," he said.

"The fact that that's now been found to be a jurisdictional error and that those signs were invalid doesn't change the fact that it has been used as a nude beach for 25 years."

Ms Gould agreed that ongoing compliance was likely to be a challenge.

"Unless we get support from the police to come down and weed out the behaviour over the next 12 months, it's still going to be a problem," she said.

Jacob Riis Beach in New York's Far Rockaway is holding a beach day for all fat people to enjoy.

It’s one way to make a splash.

“Fat Beach Day” events are appearing across the United States, aiming to create spaces for the plus-size community to gather — including one Saturday in Far Rockaway.

“We’re going through something culturally that is impacting us every day on an individual level and a systemic level,” Jordan Underwood, the event organizer told the Guardian . “We’re really trying to open up a space for people to be themselves.”

"Fat Beach Day" events are appearing across the United States, aiming to create spaces for the plus-size community to gather and celebrate.

Underwood, a plus-size model and artist, had a history of being bullied for her weight since middle school. This led her to start a blog at age 12 to document her experiences and begin her journey into “fat activism.”

Underwood organizes events throughout New York City and collaborated with Berriez, a Brooklyn-based vintage store “curated for curves,” to organize Fat Beach Day at Jacob Riis Park.

“I’m so self-conscious at the beach, and I’m never around people that look like me,” Emma Zack, who started Berriez in 2018, told the outlet. “I’m excited we’ve created this space for folks with bigger bodies to have a good time.”

In an age where weight-loss drugs like Ozempic are popular and thinness is celebrated as the ideal beauty standard, events like Fat Beach Day are seen by some as pushback.

Vogue Business reported that for the autumn/winter 2024 season, only 0.8% of models were plus-size, and 3.7% were mid-size, a decline from previous years.

A KFF survey in May found about one in eight adults in the US had used weight-loss drugs like Ozempic or Mounjaro, highlighting the societal trend.

“In the 2000s, there was a strong anti-fat, intense cultural swing that really parallels what we’re going through right now,” Underwood said, highlighting the decade’s insidious fat-phobia, as seen with celebrities like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson being labeled ‘fat’ at a size six.

Similar events are planned across the US. A Fat Friends Pool Party will be held in Chicago July 13, and a Bellies Out Beach Day in Los Angeles in a few weeks.

“Fat bodies and Riis are a match made in heaven,” Kleo Alana told the Guardian from Saturday’s event. “Jordan Underwood and Berriez have brought heaven to Queens.”

A Fat Friends Pool Party will be held in Chicago on July 13, and a Bellies Out Beach Day in Los Angeles in a few weeks.

Recently, New York passed legislation to prohibit weight discrimination . In 2023, Mayor Eric Adams signed a bill banning weight discrimination in hiring and housing.

But hate, especially online, persists.

“It’s a really sh–ty time, not just on the internet but in society, to be fat, and it feels really violent in a lot of ways,” Zack said. “You’d think it wouldn’t be such a thing because New York is so open, and you dress however you want. I always say I never realized how much people hate fat people until I got TikTok.”

What time is the debate tonight? How to watch Trump, Biden in 2024 'CNN Presidential Debate'

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will take the stage Thursday night in Atlanta in the first head-to-head presidential debate of the 2024 election.

The debate airing on CNN will differ from previous debates between the two candidates in a few notable ways, thanks to rules put in place by the network: there will be no live audience, and all microphones will be muted except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak.

Both candidates may spar over their respective ages (Biden is 81, Trump is 78), as well as Trump's recent criminal conviction , their stances on abortion and the Israel-Hamas war .

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , who is running as an independent candidate, did not qualify for the debate and will not join Trump and Biden on stage.

Here's how to watch the "CNN Presidential Debate", the first of the 2024 election cycle between Trump and Biden.

Thou Shalt Not Post the Ten Commandments in the Classroom

A photograph of tablets bearing the ten commandments.

By David French

Opinion Columnist

There is a certain irony in the bravado about the Ten Commandments from Gov. Jeff Landry of Louisiana. On Saturday he told attendees at a Republican fund-raiser, “I can’t wait to be sued.” Clearly, he knows that the Supreme Court previously ruled against mandatory displays of the Ten Commandments in the classroom. In a 1980 case, Stone v. Graham , the Supreme Court struck down a Kentucky law that required the posting of the Ten Commandments, purchased through private donations, in every public school classroom in the state.

A Louisiana law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in every public classroom in the state defies this precedent, so, yes, the state will be sued .

But Landry’s comments didn’t stop with bravado. He also said something else. “If you want to respect the rule of law,” he told the guests, “you’ve got to start from the original lawgiver, which was Moses.” To teach respect for the rule of law, he’s defying the Supreme Court? That’s an interesting message to send to students.

It’s consistent with an emerging Republican approach to constitutional law. Just as many Republicans view their constituency as composed of the “real” Americans, they tend to believe their interpretation of the Constitution represents the “real” Constitution. So we’re seeing a flurry of culture-war-motivated state laws , many of them aimed at the First Amendment, that confront precedent.

The Dobbs decision gave some Republicans hope for radical change, but reversing Roe has not signaled open season on the court’s rulings. Republicans’ challenges to the Voting Rights Act failed , the independent state legislature theory foundered , and efforts to expand the standing doctrine to limit access to the abortion pill faltered. Even so, it’s premature to declare that the Supreme Court is frustrating the MAGA right.

Altering constitutional law is not the only motivation here; a version of Christian mysticism is also in play. There is a real belief that the Ten Commandments have a form of spiritual power over the hearts and minds of students and that posting the displays can change their lives.

I’m an evangelical Christian who believes in God and the divine inspiration of Scripture, but I do not believe that documents radiate powers of personal virtue. I happened to grow up in Kentucky and went to classes before the Ten Commandments were ordered removed, and I can testify that the displays had no impact on our lives. My classmates and I were not better people because of the faded posters on the walls.
