9 Best Places to Find Data Entry Jobs

Our readers always come first.

The content on DollarSprout includes links to our advertising partners. When you read our content and click on one of our partners’ links, and then decide to complete an offer — whether it’s downloading an app, opening an account, or some other action — we may earn a commission from that advertiser, at no extra cost to you.

Our ultimate goal is to educate and inform, not lure you into signing up for certain offers. Compensation from our partners may impact what products we cover and where they appear on the site, but does not have any impact on the objectivity of our reviews or advice.

Remote data entry jobs give you the flexibility to work wherever you want. Here's where to find them.

Our mission at DollarSprout is to help readers improve their financial lives, and we regularly partner with companies that share that same vision. If a purchase or signup is made through one of our Partners’ links, we may receive compensation for the referral. Learn more here .

One of the best things about working data entry jobs from home is the flexibility to work wherever you want.

You can work during the week or look for weekend work only, which makes them great home-based jobs for moms, students, or anyone looking to earn extra money.

There are plenty of online data input jobs that allow you to work remotely, earning a decent living regardless of your location. You just need to know where to find them.

What Are Data Entry Jobs?

Data entry typically refers to taking hard-copy information, like sales receipts, addresses, or survey responses, and inputting it into a computer program. It could also include scanning documents, transcribing audio files, or coding insurance forms.

You don’t need a specialized degree or training to work as a data entry clerk, but you typically need a high school diploma and to be a good typist. If you work in the U.S. or with U.S.-based clients, you’ll need to be able to read English.

Membership organizations, law firms, medical practices, or sales organizations are among the types of companies that hire data entry clerks.

Most well-known for its photocopy machines and other print products, Xerox offers a number of work-from-home opportunities, including data entry. You might be able to find a full- or part-time position earning up to $30,000 per year.

It’s not always hiring, so it’s a good idea to upload your resume into its applicant database. When a position becomes available, you’ll be notified via email so you can apply.

What Skills Are Required for Data Entry Jobs?

Though every data entry job is different, there are some basic skills you should have if you want to succeed in this field.

Computer skills

Because you’ll be working from home, all your work will be done using a computer. You don’t have to have expert-level skills, but you do need some basic computer knowledge.

Helpful computer skills include:

  • Typing. Since the majority of data entry involves typing, this is the most important skill you’ll need. The faster you can type, the faster you can get your work done and the more money you can make typing from home. The average typing speed is 40 words per minute, so anything above that is a good start for a data entry clerk. You can test your typing speed online to see where you fall.
  • Spreadsheets. Many companies organize their data in spreadsheets, so knowing how to use a spreadsheet is key to succeeding in data entry. There are two programs you should be familiar with: Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. Both have a lot of features. However, they’re fairly similar. If you learn one, your skills should transfer to the other.
  • Word documents. There’s a good chance you’ll be using Microsoft Word at some point. Knowing how to use the basic features of the program, such as formatting a document or inserting links, will give you an edge over other job-seekers.
  • PowerPoint. Although you’re less likely to use PowerPoint compared to Word or Excel, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with it.
  • All Google products . Due to their collaborative and cloud-based nature, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways for people to work online. Be sure you have a professional Google account and a good working knowledge of basic Google applications.

If you find that you’re lacking in some of the skills, don’t worry. You can find online courses and tutorials to help, and many of the programs come with in-platform assistance and troubleshooting.

Organizational skills

Staying organized is essential to your success as a data entry clerk. This is especially true when you’re working with a lot of data at once and need to keep things straight.

Some common organization skills you need might be:

  • Keeping files and folders straight. As a remote data entry clerk, you’ll be downloading and uploading lots of files and folders. Create a system for naming and filing everything on your computer. This will keep you from misplacing a file or sending a client the wrong data.
  • Attention to detail. If you’re not detail-oriented, data entry will be difficult. You might be dealing with long strings of data that can start to look alike. Data entry can also be extremely repetitive, and it can be easy to start overlooking small details. Paying attention to detail will keep you from making costly mistakes.
  • Tracking deadlines. Many data entry projects are time-sensitive or need to be completed by a specific date. If you have multiple clients or projects, it’s important that you use a calendar or other system for managing deadlines. Google’s calendar feature is a free option you can use for tracking important dates, tasks, and assignments.

If you have trouble staying organized, you can use a task management system like Asana or an app like Evernote to track different clients, projects, and deadlines.

Communication skills

Since you won’t be working in a traditional office environment where it’s easy to chat with your coworkers whenever you need to, it’s important to stay on top of online communication.

Some of the ways you’ll communicate with your coworkers and supervisors include:

  • Email. Most communication for online work happens over email. You’ll need a system to monitor your inbox and respond to emails in a timely manner.  A good rule of thumb is to make sure you reply within 24 hours, but some emails may be more time-sensitive. Make it easy to keep up with your emails by installing a mail app on your smartphone and setting up new message alerts.
  • Online chat communications. Some companies have their own online chat system or use a system like Slack. If your employer uses this type of system, make sure you learn to use it properly and check your messages as needed. Get clear guidance from employers or clients on when they need you to be available online.
  • Video conferencing. Your client or employer may hold team meetings or trainings via Zoom or another video conferencing platform. You’ll need to know how to navigate those platforms, as well as have reliable internet to access them.

Being able to communicate clearly and professionally, as well as understanding email etiquette, is also important in an online environment.

How to Avoid Scams

There are lots of people searching for good remote data entry jobs, and scammers know it. Unfortunately, that means there are lots of work-from-home scams posing as legitimate opportunities. Keep an eye out for scams by following these tips.

  • Avoid anything that’s too good to be true. If you stumble across a data entry job that promises to pay thousands per month for minimal work, it’s likely a scam. You can make some money, especially if you have experience in a specialized field like medical coding, but keep your expectations reasonable. Be wary of anything that seems too good to be true.
  • Don’t pay to get a job. Another scam involves asking you to pay money upfront before you can start making money. If a potential employer asks for any kind of payment, walk away. No legitimate job will ever ask you to pay a fee or pay for training before you start.
  • Be wary of training programs. Plenty of legitimate employers require you to undergo some training before beginning work as a data entry clerk. Be wary of employers that want you to work for free or extremely low wages as a training period. You may find that after your “training” period, you don’t get the high-paying work they promise. Get a contract or other guarantee before you begin any kind of work.

In addition to these tips, listen to your instincts. If something sounds off about a job or makes you uncomfortable, or if you’re asked for too much personal information before you’re hired, walk away. There are plenty of legitimate options available.

Alternatives to Data Input Jobs

Data entry is a great way to make extra cash from home in your spare time, but it’s not the only remote work available. There are other ways you can turn your free time into extra cash by working online.

Virtual Assistant

Another great work-from-home job is to be a virtual assistant. A virtual assistant is a bit like a secretary or personal assistant. The only difference is, you’ll work entirely online.

Virtual assistants perform a wide variety of tasks, such as making phone calls, sending emails, running social media accounts, and more. Many virtual assistants also do data entry work from home, but the possibilities are nearly limitless.

As a virtual assistant, you have a little less freedom in choosing when and how you work. You’ll be working directly for an entrepreneur or company to complete whatever tasks they need completed.

Bookkeeping

If you’re good at balancing your checkbook, managing your budget, or just enjoy working with finances, bookkeeping is a good alternative to data entry.

Whether you work remotely or in an office, you’ll perform tasks like invoicing clients, recording receipts, issuing payments, or processing payroll. You can do this job either manually or using bookkeeping software.

You might even use a Google or Excel spreadsheet, and with these, you can create an automatic formula that does the calculations for you, eliminating any possible errors you might make in your math. This helps make you more accurate and efficient and saves time, allowing you take on more clients. Bookkeepers.com offers a free class to those who may be interested.

Transcribing

Another way to make money with your typing skills is by working as a transcriptionist. In this position, you’ll listen to audio files and transcribe them to text. You might have to do some light editing, eliminating words like “um” and sighs or sniffles, but other than that, you just type what you hear.

Transcribers can choose jobs the jobs they complete, so they have the freedom to decide when and how much they want to work. Transcription jobs pay at least $5 per hour of audio, with some offering up to $25 per audio hour. To get started, you’ll need to apply and complete a transcription test. Otherwise, no special qualifications are needed.

If you’re new to transcribing, you can join Scribie as a freelancer. This will help you hone your skills and build a portfolio of clients in case you want to start your own data entry business.

Can You Really Make Money from Data Entry?

According to the  Bureau of Labor Statistics , data entry clerks make an average hourly wage of just over $16 an hour—well above minimum wage. Not all entry-level data entry jobs pay this well, so you’ll want to make sure you choose the best-paying jobs for your schedule and skills.

The amount of money you make also depends on how quickly you work. Most remote data entry jobs are on a contractor or freelance basis, paying per job rather than by the hour.

24 Short Task Sites for Making Money From Home

Author: Holly Reisem Hanna

February 18, 2024 122 Comments

Is your daily schedule unpredictable? You can still make money from home, just use short task sites. Here are 24 gigs you can do anytime. via @theworkathomewoman

If you have a little one at home — you know how difficult it can be to get things done. But just because you have a household filled with chatter and unpredictable schedules doesn’t mean that you can’t work from home. Short tasks, also called micro-jobs or pay-per-task jobs, are the perfect way for busy moms to earn some extra money while still being readily available for their kiddos.

A micro-task job is any job or assignment that can be completed in a short amount of time. The tasks that can be completed vary in nature (writing, editing, taking surveys, transcription, watching a video, online research, etc.), as does the pay. But the reason this is such an excellent opportunity for moms is that the tasks can be done at any time, and the majority of short jobs don’t require phone work , which requires a quiet household.

If you have kiddos running around your house, here are 24 small task sites that allow you to work whenever you have free time, and make extra money on the side.

assignment jobs from home

1. Swagbucks

Swagbucks is a microtask platform where you can earn points called SB, which you can redeem for gift cards from places like Starbucks, Walmart, PayPal and Visa. With Swagbucks, you can earn SB by playing games , answering questions, shopping online, and even surfing the web using their search bar. If you refer your friends — you can earn even more. New users will receive a $10.00 sign-up bonus! The thing I like about Swagbucks is you can redeem your earnings with as little as $3.00 in your account.

  • Swagbucks has a B rating with the Better Business Bureau

2. InboxDollars

With InboxDollars , US residents can earn cash for taking surveys, reading emails, playing games, redeeming coupons, searching the web, and shopping online. Membership is free, and you’ll earn $5.00 for signing up. Your account must reach a $15 threshold before your payment is issued. Payment options include PayPal, American Express or Visa Pre-Paid cards, or gift cards from major retailers. InboxDollars is open to US residents 18 years and older. If you’d like to know more, check out our full review of InboxDollars .

  • InboxDollars has a B rating with the Better Business Bureau

3. Course Hero

Course Hero is a short task platform that hires native English speakers from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia to tutor high school and college students with course-specific questions. Individuals must have a bachelor’s degree. Tutors earn an average of $3.00 per question, earning around $12-$20 per hour. Work as many hours as you’d like; all you need is a reliable internet connection.

  • Course Hero has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau

4. TELUS International

TELUS International , which acquired Lionbridge, hires independent contractors to work on microtasks like translation, transcription, rating ads, annotation, search engine evaluation, and testing. You must first prove your proficiency by taking and passing relevant evaluation tests (which I’ve heard are pretty challenging). Once they have your evaluation scores, you’ll receive invites to work on available projects. With these gigs, you can work whenever, wherever, and as much as you’d like.

  • TELUS International has an A- rating with the Better Business Bureau

Fiverr is a little different in that you don’t search for jobs. Instead, you post tasks you’re willing to complete for $5.00-$10,000. People sell everything from writing services, design services, and voice-over services to making phone calls and videos. Once you make a sale, Fiverr will keep a fee of 20%, and payments will be made via PayPal.

If you’re interested in how people are making a full-time income with Fiverr, check out The Fiverr Mastermind Group. They are six Fiverr power sellers who earn six figures a year each, and they wrote an e-book about their success with the platform: The Fiverr Master Class : The Fiverr Secrets Of Six Power Sellers That Enable You To Work From Home!

  • Fiverr gets an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau

6. Amazon Mechanical Turk

Over at Amazon’s MTurk , you can make money online working on HITS (Human Intelligence Tasks). A few of the tasks that I saw listed were transcribing information from a business card to a form with a payout of $0.02. Another task was transcribing a voicemail from audio to text (audio length of three hours), a payout of $76.19. After completing the task and the requester approves your work, the money goes into your Amazon payments account or onto an Amazon gift card .

Amazon MTurk tends to get mixed reviews. Some people complained of low payouts, and others have said their work wasn’t approved, so they didn’t get paid. We have no way of knowing the quality of their work, and if denial of payment was justified, so read through reviews before deciding to join.

  • Amazon’s MTurk receives a 2.5-star rating on Trustpilot

Last Words About Short Task Jobs

A few last words about micro-task sites.

There are other micro job sites out there, but not all are reputable. If you find another short task site, please do your research to ensure that they are legit and worth your time. Trustpilot, Glassdoor, Indeed, and the BBB are excellent places to search for reviews. Also, look to see when the app or website was last updated. Apps and websites that are sitting on the web stagnant are susceptible to hackers placing viruses, malware, and trojans which can potentially steal your personal information.

Because opportunities will not always be available, you should consider signing up for multiple sites. This way, you have a better chance of consistently having tasks to choose from. But before you register, you’ll want to create an email account just for these opportunities. Many of these sites send a lot of emails, and it will be easier to manage if you have a separate email account just for your short task jobs.

All of these are independent contracting roles, so you’ll need to set aside money for self-employment taxes.

Lastly, short tasks will not make you rich, but they are an easy way to earn a little extra cash without having to get a job. After all, you’re most likely online, so instead of scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, use your time to make some extra money.

I just tried signing up for Spare5, but there is no place to register on their webpage, just a link to log in. I also tried looking up their app, but it does not exist (IOS). Does anyone know if they are no longer accepting people? Or what’s happened? Thank you.

It said it couldn’t find my email address. I don’t know if they need to update the script on their site or what (which looks criminally old BTW) but I’m going to try out OneSpace first. Thanks for the articles, I work full time but going to try to earn some on the side to pay off some bills that came up recently out of the blue and some moving expenses that will be coming up. I have been a VA for over 6 years. Recently Upwork (formerly Odesk) has changed it policy and I found out I can no longer work when I came back from a hiatus. The nice thing about Upwork is that people from all over the world can work here for people all over theworld too. Can you please recommend work sites like this? I found out that many US based work from home do not hire people outside the US and you need a 1099. I love working online and on graveyard shifts. Tips are highly appreciated ( I did look up the other websites mentioned above).

I use Field Agent, the jobs vary in what is asked; the key is to reserve the assignment as quickly as possible and then complete the job. Somethings have been difficult to complete with small children (i.e. beer store audit), however I sometimes just pop them in the shopping cart while I complete the assignment.

Thank you so much for compiling the information! I will definately check out these platforms!

Spare5 is another great option. I’m from Venezuela, and as you well know, is very difficult for me to get dollars, so I started to looking a way to make money just using my computer. Spare 5 is a short task site too, and you can download the app for Iphone on the app store and also work from a computer, in its web app. Tasks are very intuitive and each one has instructions, in case you can’t understand or just don’t know how to do it.

To sign up: open spare5.com, then click on “start tasking”, select “launch webtasks” and fill the blank spaces. I write this because at first I didn’t know where to sign up, just in case anyone could have the same confusion as me.

PD: Sorry for my basic english.

And if you use Task Rabbit — you can make pretty decent money — although you won’t be working online.

How much will I get paid?

You’ll have total control over your finances. Only you decide what bid to put on each order and how many orders you’re able to complete. The more orders you bid on, the more you can receive.

Will I get any bonuses?

Our company also has an additional way to motivate our technical assignment writers. We have special awards and bonuses for the experts who work productively and provide assignments of the best quality. Your bonus also depends on customers’ marks and on-time delivery.

How do I receive my payment?

What bid should I place for the order?

Your bid is only your choice. Our service sets only a minimum limitation that depends on the deadline. Remember that the customer won’t see the same price per page, as we have a service commission. You may update or delete your bid at any moment.

What if my customer doesn’t release money for the order?

With our service, you don’t need to worry about your payment. We reserve money on the customer’s account in advance, and you’ll be 100% paid if you complete the order on time and according to the requirements. Each order is divided into several parts. A customer gets access to the second part only if he or she releases money for the first part. In such a manner, we guarantee that you’ll get paid for parts completed.

Is there a risk of getting a fine?

We try to provide comfortable conditions for the fruitful cooperation of both sides — our writers and our clients. Thus, we want certain rules and policies to be followed in order to protect the rights of both. If these regulations are adhered to, fines are not applied, as we are always honest with those who choose our service. Every case is considered and double-checked by our Quality Assurance Department, and after a thorough investigation, they make the final decision if the fine is just in a particular situation.

funwriter

I already have my bachelor’s degree in computer science, but I keep studying. Meanwhile, I have some free time to help other students with their homework. I’ve had many assignment writing jobs, but I would recommend AssignmentShark both to novices and real experts.

mariephysic

Freelance writing is my dream job. I can work as much as I want and pick the orders by myself. No one will make you work with an assignment you’re not interested in. And they always pay on time!

sofie-siaita

Guys, making money has never been easier. I’m not able to get a full-time job because I’m a full-time mom. But extra cash never hurts, right? Besides, I have to do something with my degree in biology.

A strong portfolio also increases your chances of landing graphic design jobs. You need knowledge of online tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, HTML/ CSS, and basic UX/ UI design.

Full-time positions need you to dedicate at least eight hours daily. Freelance websites like Upwork allow designers to bid for jobs. Online jobs from home

Another great side hustle that you can start with an investment is a copywriter. A copywriter collaborates with a graphics designer to create copy for ads and marketing campaigns. Their purpose is to increase product sales through written content.

If you have a medical, technology, or marketing background, you qualify for copywriting positions. Certifications compensate for lacking experience and help you stand out to employers. For copywriting jobs, apply on LinkedIn using keywords like ad copywriter, commercial writer, digital marketing writer, or technical writer.

13. Etsy Store Owner

Creating a seller account on Etsy is free. The platform allows the sale of authentic handmade items, vintage goods, and craft supplies. You can only sell handmade items made by you, so you can’t resell items. You could also partner with a manufacturer to create custom products for you. While many items you can sell on Etsy , printables are the easiest and most profitable listings. There are many entrepreneurs who now earn 6 & 7 figures with their Etsy shops.

Creating unique printables such as budgeting templates, life, and cooking templates is doable on Canva . Etsy charges $0.2 for every listing and makes it available to 40+ million buyers on the site. You can also link your shop to your social media accounts to maximize sales.

14. Product Tester

Some companies send out products for people to use and give their honest opinion about the products. While some compensate you with the product, other companies pay cash for a review. To make money reviewing products, register with sites that offer cash payouts like American Consumer Opinion (ACOP) or Pinecone Research.

The Johnson and Johnson review program sends out free products to people before launching them. You also get to keep the products after submitting your review. Joining numerous programs gets you more products every year and increases your earnings.

Background/Context

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The nexus between gender and climate change presents a complex and pressing issue that demands broadened understanding and attention. Unpacking gender dimensions within climate-related concerns, policies and programmes is important to enhance social, economic, and environmental outcomes. In particular, exploring the gender and climate change nexus is key to reducing gender vulnerability, the differentiated impacts of disasters and climate change on women and men, promoting the empowerment and opportunities of women and men in all their diversities, enhancing their access to environmental decision-making, and ensuring a just transition.

Data plays a critical role in uncovering gender-climate change nexus issues, informing actions, and supporting the monitoring of policy implementation and outcomes. The statistical community at various levels has been advancing statistical guidance and tools in the areas of gender, climate change, and the intertwining between the two. They include, for instance, the Global Set of Climate Change Statistics and Indicators , the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting and Climate change , the Asia-Pacific Disaster-related Statistics Framework , the Asia-Pacific Gender-Environment Indicators , and the Model Questionnaire on Gender and the Environment . Understanding particular circumstances, needs, and priorities of countries is essential for policy-relevant applications of these tools and guidance in addressing national gender-climate change concerns.

Monitoring SDG implementation at the national level is challenging. Data availability, coordination across the entire statistical system, technical capacity, and access to IT infrastructure are key barriers for member States to measure their progress towards achieving the SDGs. The context-specific challenges faced by each country in measuring the SDGs require tailored solutions. Given the cross-cutting nature of the SDGs and the increasing demand for timely, granular, and relevant official statistics, there is a clear need for the coordination of data from different areas to facilitate the production of more comprehensive and granular statistics that span the economy, society, and environment.

In this connection UN Women is seeking to engage a national consultant in the Philippines to support implementation of the project, supervised by the project managers at ESCAP and UN Women. The consultant will support production and use of selected priority indicators and statistics to understand the gender-climate change nexus and inform related policy.

The purpose of the consultancy is to improve the availability, accessibility and use of quality data and official statistics in support of sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific

The consultant will be reporting to Regional Gender Statistics Specialist, UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.
