Hot Topics 22 Blog Version Id1 Lc H Jz Zx36 E8xsy Bl S Tzps GSL3 BT4zf L

For a few years now, we’ve shared on this blog the hottest edtech trends of the year based on the topics resonating with educators who submit proposals to present at the annual ISTE conference . The topics that presenters submit can tell us a lot about what educators are interested in — and experimenting with — in their schools and classrooms.

Often the topics don’t change much from year to year, but that hasn’t been the case the past two years.

Last year, after many months of remote learning under their belts, educators were eager to share their best practices about online learning, as well as how to build equity and boost social emotional learning, which were three of the hottest topics going into 2021.

While those topics made the list again this year, there were some surprises at the top of the list. Here are the eight hottest topics for 2022, starting with No 8.

8. Augmented, mixed and virtual reality

The ISTE community has been excited about this topic for years now, but it’s been elevated recently as tools for immersive learning become more affordable, accessible and easier for both teachers and students to use.

“Education has just started to tap into what it can bring,” says Camilla Gagliolo, a longtime educator and ISTE’s senior director of event content. “Personally, I’m really excited about the growth in AR/VR and in immersive learning.”

Augmented reality involves superimposing a computer-generated image on your view of the real world. Think Pokemon Go.

Virtual reality is a 3D, computer-generated environment that you can immerse yourself in. Using an Oculus or a similar headset, you can transport yourself to a another place or time and interact within it, whether it’s visiting the Great Pyramid of Giza or exploring the functions of the human body.

Some of the newer trends involve being able to interact with historical events that have been recreated in a virtual environment. So, you can show up at an event and actually be part of it — well, sort of.

The pandemic has caused a lot of educators to focus on how to better engage students in content online, and AR/VR is a sure-fire way to do that.

In addition to having students experience learning through AR/VR, many educators are helping students create their own experiences.

Look for sessions on how to do this and much more with AR/VR in your classroom when the ISTELive 22 program goes live in February.

7. Social-emotional learning

As soon as COVID-19 closed school buildings in 2020, it was immediately clear that educators would need to do far more than teach their students. Every single student was struggling with something in addition to trying to adapt to a new way of learning, and educators were on the front lines of helping students feel safe, secure, emotionally stable and ready to learn.

But many of their needs — like food, internet and medical care — were shared by the whole family, so educators realized they couldn’t help students in isolation. They had to work with families as a whole.

In a way, roles were reversed — or at least blurred: Educators helped families meet their basic needs by assisting them with finding resources like meals, child care and other services, while parents took over a lot of the teaching tasks.

What evolved was a whole-village approach to education, where, for the first time on a grand scale, teachers and schools were working in concert with students and families.

“When the parent community took over the teaching, the teachers had to help the parents help the children,” Gagliolo said. “There is a new role for parents, and I think this is going to change how we work with parents going forward.”

Many individual educators and school systems as a whole developed innovative ways of working with parents and are eager to share what they’ve learned at ISTELive 22 .

6. Equity and inclusion

Never has equity and inclusion seemed more urgent than in the past two years. The pandemic brought inequities — whether they were due to socio-economic status, special needs or the family circumstances of the student — into sharp focus.

The most immediate need was devices and bandwidth. Schools, government, the business sector and local communities combined forces to deliver devices and connectivity to nearly every household in the country, but that's not enough.

“ It took a pandemic to give every kid a device,” Gagliolo says. “Now the challenge is to get meaningful learning with these devices.”

Educators have been doing just that — experimenting with ways to make learning more engaging, student-centered and inclusive with technology tools.

“Even Zoom has become a tool of access,” Gagliolo says. “The pandemic actually brought to the forefront what tech can do to bridge equity and meet the need for tools, platforms and access.”

Although the learning curve was high, many educators discovered strategies and ideas for making learning more accessible to a range of learners using various tools. And they are eager to share what worked at ISTELive 22.

5. Online tools and apps

This topic has been a favorite of presenters and ISTE conference participants for years because it appeals to the tech geek in all of us. But this time around, there’s an emphasis on highlighting tools that — just like students and educators themselves — have made a big leap in what they are capable of because of the pandemic.

“There’s been so much improvement in tools and apps,” Gagliolo said. “They were forced to be much more stable. They can handle more interaction and have developed features for connecting students with teachers.”

A lot of what the newest versions of tools are offering allow students to learn — and share their learning — in a variety of ways, whether it’s being able to quickly upload a video, make a comment via a sound recording, or create and quickly upload an artifact.

Free creation tools like Adobe Spark as well as myriad video-creation tools have taken a big leap in terms of ease of use and accessibility.

4. Distance, online, blended learning

This was hands-down the hottest topic of 2021 as educators around the globe were still learning how to best transition their teaching to online formats. The biggest hurdle at first was how to use the tools. The learning curve was high as educators had to figure out everything from creating breakout groups in Zoom and Teams to establishing rules about cameras and appropriate backgrounds.

This year the topic is less about how to use the technology and more about how to best engage students.

And the stakes are high. Disengaged students can simply turn off their cameras when they are bored. But with the threat of learning loss looming, no educator wants any student to miss out on access to learning. So they’ve been coming up with lots of ways to stimulate collaboration and build community — online and in person.

“There are a lot of new strategies and new tools developed over the past two years that engage students at a high level,” Gagliolo says.

Although it’s not exactly new, she points to FlipGrid, as a tool that’s being used in diverse ways. It allows students to record comments, facilitates a connection between home and school, and lets students demonstrate their storytelling chops.

And speaking of tools, learning management systems, once the bane of educators’ existence, have enjoyed a resurgence. Educators in general have become more comfortable with these tools and are seeing the potential for communicating with students and parents in a much more streamlined way.

3. Computer science and computational thinking

Computer science and computational thinking have long been a favorite topic of teachers who love technology and see it as a gateway for their students to enter STEM careers. So it’s no surprise that it made it to the No. 3 spot on the list.

What is more surprising is the evolution of computer science (CS) and computational thinking (CT) as something strictly reserved for math and science class to a discipline that has infiltrated all subjects, from literature and art to music and dance.

“You think of CS and CT as being for math and science, but we’re seeing educators incorporating it into language learning and storytelling quite a bit,” Gagliolo says. “It’s taking different shapes and forms and not just in the traditional areas.”

Tools like Scratch, Snap, Tynker and KODU allow students to use programming to create stories. They develop their characters, or sprites, and build out their environments. “They can create their world and their scenario,” Gagliolo says.

2. Instructional design and delivery

Of all the topics on the list, this one is perhaps the most exciting because it illustrates a sophistication in how educators are thinking about educational technology, Gagliolo says. The focus is on educational strategies and instruction with technology for higher-order thinking — not tools and gadgets.

“The pedagogy and learning strategies are rising to the top more than the technology topics,” Gagliolo said. “It shows that awareness that learning comes first and tech tools are there to support.”

Instructional design and delivery covers an array of topics from designing content in online formats that is accessible to all learners to ensuring that the content is culturally relevant. It covers ways to encourage community and interaction among students and teachers as well as an awareness of research on how students learn and how online delivery differs from face to face.

This information is not just from educators who have the instructional designer title. Remote learning  made educators of all subject areas and grade bands realize that they, too, were assuming the role of instructional designers.

1. Project-based learning

Also known as problem- and challenge-based learning, PBL is a model where students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects.

While this model isn’t new to ISTE presenters, what’s astonishing is that it landed on the top, Gagliano said. What it shows is that as educators become more comfortable with various tools, they are focusing more on pedagogy and how to guide students to use tools to practice their personal passions and achieve their goals.

“It’s a level of maturity that ISTE has advocated for for a long time,” she said. "It’s more about the learning strategy than the tool.”

Many of the conference proposals related to PBL are for poster sessions, which means these are from educators eager to show a project their students have taken on. What that shows is that PBL has moved from the theoretical to the practical. These are projects that have been tested in classrooms around the world.

Many of them, Gagliolo says, are related to design thinking. Students are coming up with problems and solutions, prototyping and iterating.

5 Essential Tech Talks to Have With Students

To set the stage for successful student use of technology, start the year by discussing expectations around how tech like AI should and shouldn’t be used in your classroom.

In many K–12 classrooms, the combination of one-to-one devices and internet connectivity allows teachers to provide students with “access to knowledge, communities, and opportunities that they would never have been able to reach before,” associate professor Sarah Schneider Kavanagh and science teacher Tess Bernhard note.

That access—via tools like email and video conferencing, web browsers, and apps that can unleash students’ creativity—can become overwhelming, like turbulent white water rapids, or, if managed wisely, feel more like a tranquilly flowing stream. What determines the flow is the guidelines and guardrails you set up, explains educational consultant Jamie Knowles.

Clearly defined policies, routines, and expectations can “help students use class time most efficiently” while helping you get the most out of teaching with technology, Knowles says. Having conversations to lay out your policies can also provide space to co-create norms alongside students, which can increase their engagement . Enlist their voices where possible and students are much more likely to take “ownership over the way the class is run and its daily culture.”

Here are some suggestions for how to have these conversations with students at the start of the year.

The AI Playbook

AI is one of several big challenges educators face. Many teachers are learning about this evolving technology alongside their students without a lot of definitive resources , professional development , or training . An informal poll of 1,935 educators conducted by high school teacher Chanea Bond on X (formerly Twitter) revealed that 79 percent felt they didn’t know enough about AI to “teach students how to use it responsibly in a classroom setting as a professional responsibility.” But that’s exactly what a lot of teachers are being asked to do.

Whether you allow or prohibit the use of AI, students should know what to expect. “Students need to understand the rationale for these kinds of decisions as part of their own emerging AI literacy ,” science teacher Jen Stauffer and middle school history teacher Jonathan Gold write. AI adds another layer to conversations around integrity and “what good work looks like inside the classroom,” Gold told me in a recent interview. It’s helpful to add AI to topics you already go over, like documenting your sources or resource research .

Gold doesn’t spend much time talking about student use of AI initially: “AI tools are a second semester tool,” he tells students, focusing at first on norms of trust, reliability, and the classroom’s intellectual culture. These need to precede the introduction of AI, he says: “You don’t get in the car on the first day of Driver’s Ed.” Gold tells students AI is something they will eventually experiment with and advises them not to use the tools just yet. When you’re ready to introduce AI, a simple “ red light, yellow light, green light ” system can help guide student usage.

Bond uses a different approach in her English classes—“AI generated or enhanced writing is not permitted,” she says, and she takes time to explain why . Bond’s policy, the starting point for her class discussion, is one that other teachers can use: “In this class, your job is to grow into a better reader and writer. In order to do your job, you must read and write a lot. My job is to provide feedback to help you grow in your abilities. In order to do my job, I need to read YOUR writing. I need to know YOUR voice.”

Phones or No Phones?

The earlier you set up cell phone expectations , the better, writes Liz Kolb, a clinical professor of education technologies and teacher education at the University of Michigan. Especially in schools without access to one-to-one devices, smartphones remain a tool that teachers can use to benefit learning—but they need clear policies to avoid the ever-present possibility that the devices will be distracting.

In classrooms where students can use their phones for independent work or research , educator Sarah Said suggests communicating the “boundary for when phones can and can’t be out.” A stoplight management approach “allows teachers some flexibility to use cell phones when the situation warrants,” Kolb explains: Posting a red button on the door tells students that devices will not be used that day. Have a conversation to engage students in thinking critically about the cell phone’s role in the classroom: “Ask your students to help you develop social norms for what is and is not appropriate cell phone use during green and yellow button times,” she says. “Should they be allowed to go on their social media networks during class? Why or why not? Talk to them about what to do with their devices in different social scenarios in the classroom.”

In some districts, students may have had a rude awakening if their school or district established a policy banning cell phones . Staff development teacher Christopher Klein advises “treating students with empathy and providing respectful, humane solutions ” as you navigate this transition together. At Luxemburg-Casco Middle School, teachers began the year with a review of the school’s “ away for the day ” policy, which has students keep their phones in their lockers from the first bell of the day to the last. In other schools, cell phones and smartwatches are to be turned off and kept in Yondr pouches, students’ backpacks, or hanging phone caddies during class; once again, this needs to be consistently communicated to students.

Klein suggests elevating these discussions of classroom norms with reflection: “Each September I show my students a video like this one to spark thinking about their relationships with their cell phones, survey students about their technology use, and provide self-help strategies for when students recognize the need to limit the amount of time they are spending on their phones.”

Guiding Students to a Richer Understanding of Tech

Children “have many opportunities to interact with new technologies” but rarely get to create with them , writes Mitchel Resnick, a computer scientist and LEGO Papert Professor of Learning Research at the MIT Media Lab. That’s because computers are viewed by people of all ages as “information machines,” whereas Resnick argues they should be seen as more like paintbrushes.

Discuss with students how they can use technology to engage with curricular content on a deeper level and to show what they know . Let them know that using technology creatively to demonstrate their understanding is not only accepted, but embraced. This gives kids license to explore active uses of technology and motivation to think outside the box. In Amy Szczepanski’s ninth- and 10th-grade science classes, students choose their own final —from the topic to how they will demonstrate their knowledge. One student used the popular sandbox video game Minecraft to make a model of DNA, a callback to an earlier assignment where he had used the game to build a model of a cell and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Similarly, occasionally allowing students to craft podcasts or video essays analyzing a concept or topic has a lot of overlap with the process of writing an essay , says Tanner Higgin, a senior researcher at WestEd. Such assignments provide a chance to discuss not just the creative possibilities of technology but also what makes a piece of writing effective or powerful.

Tending to Your Tech

When the bell rings, many older students get up and walk out of the classroom almost without thinking, Hedreich Nichols, a district educational technology integration specialist, told me: “That’s where we lose so many devices and things get broken.” This can often lead to computers becoming “beyond use six months into the school year.”

project topics in technical education

Explaining your expectations can prevent a lot of problems, Nichols says. “You have to tell kids how to hold their laptop if they’re walking with it,” she explains. “Tell kids how to make sure it’s cleaned and wiped down each day, or if you do it once every three days. You build routines around what to do and not do.” Curriculum Principal David LaMaster loops families into that conversation. Each Sunday, he sends a nudge via school social media accounts and the learning management system to remind middle-grade students to bring their devices—fully charged—to school: “Parents and students frequently tell me how much they appreciate the reminders,” he writes.

Students can be very hard on devices, and to mitigate wear and tear, Nichols suggests dedicating the first and last couple minutes of class to having students check their devices over . “Just as no one would require a science teacher to start and end lab instruction without proper setup, breakdown, and cleanup as a part of the instructional block, similar protocols are vital for teachers who now essentially provide daily instruction in computer labs,” Nichols says.

Digital Citizenship 101

While Digital Citizenship Week is celebrated in October, the first few weeks of school are a great time to set some ground rules around smart online behavior and digital decorum , notes teacher and edtech consultant Rachelle Dené Poth. It’s particularly important as technologies like AI gain traction, she says—students should be careful not to enter personally identifiable information or simply accept an output from generative AI as objective fact.

Poth suggests that teachers at least emphasize that students should think before they post on social media, explain what is and isn’t appropriate to share in online spaces and why, and model how to properly cite and use information that they access through the internet. Broader conversations should show students “the impact of one’s digital actions,” she says, including how to keep themselves safe online, protect their privacy and respect the privacy of others, think critically about and analyze information they encounter , and engage respectfully with both people they know and those they don’t.

Poth has students “create PSAs to share information about one of the elements of digital citizenship they selected” to display in the hallways. Pam Fierst, an eighth-grade ELA teacher, discusses the potential issues and dangers of cell phones with students. What these exercises have in common is that they guide students to discuss responsible and irresponsible practices when using the internet and their devices. They are also a great way to remind students of general guidelines that they sometimes forget or ignore, like the fact that playing games on school-assigned devices is prohibited without permission, or that harassing or cyberbullying a peer has consequences.

The right topic will allow you to showcase the knowledge and skills you’ve developed throughout your studies while addressing a real-world problem. To start, brainstorm ideas that are relevant to your field and spark your interest. This personal connection can be key to maintaining motivation throughout the project.

Consider exploring innovative capstone project ideas, especially those that tackle urgent ecological issues and encourage sustainable practices.

Next, narrowing down your ideas by reviewing the existing literature is essential. This step will help you identify gaps in current research or practice, allowing you to contribute something new and valuable to your field. A topic that is too broad can become overwhelming, so aim for a specific issue that is manageable within the scope of your project.

Finally, seek feedback from your advisor or peers to refine your topic choice. Their insights can help you avoid potential pitfalls and ensure that your topic is both challenging and achievable. By carefully selecting a well-defined, relevant, and interesting topic, you’ll set yourself up for a successful capstone project that truly reflects your academic achievements.

9 Collaborative Technology Projects Your Students Will Love!

If your classroom is far from a 1:1 environment (more like 1:32), it can be hard to find great technology projects that really work.

project topics in technical education

If your classroom is far from a 1:1 environment (more like 1:32), it can be hard to find great technology projects that really work. Here are some simple tech tools students can use to create awesome projects. Students can work together in cooperative learning groups or independently depending on your access to technology in your school district. Bonus: They’re all free!

inkle

Inkle   is a fun digital storytelling tool for students. Rather than having students use Microsoft Word, change things up by having them create a digital book. Students will love adding images to make their story come to life! Cooperative learning idea: Students can collaborate and create a Choose Your Own Adventure story! Each child adds a paragraph to the story and at least two options for readers to choose from. They insert images by adding the link to an image they like online. This Web 2.0 tool is free and the children’s work can be saved and shared.

story-bird

2. Story Bird

With Story Bird , kids can choose images and invent their very own unique story to go along with the pictures. Students must use their inference skills to depict an image. What is the character feeling? Where does the story take place (setting)? What’s the plot? It’s up to kids to decide after they carefully examine every detail of their image. There is no right or wrong answer.

Cooperative learning idea:  Have students share a computer and agree on an image. Then they go off and depict the image as they see it. The students can then compare and contrast their results.

bubblr

3. Build Your Wild Self

New York Zoos and Aquarium / Wildlife Conservation Society has an interactive game called  Build Your Wild Self!  Students choose different body parts and limbs for their creature. Then, they choose a habitat. When they’re all finished, the site describes each attribute they chose. For example, orb spider eyes: “You have six eyes, but you can’t see very well. You use your keen sense of touch to track down prey.”

Cooperative l earning idea:  Have students work together to build a “wild self” and write a paragraph describing what their animal would eat, their animal’s habitat, exceptional characteristics and talents, as well as their unique adaptations. You could also group students into teams to create a habitat that would be suitable for all of their animals!

4. Blabberize

Blabberize is a free tool that makes photos come to life! Students upload a photo, create a mouth and record whatever they would like their image to say!

Cooperative learning idea: Students can take turns talking. This tool can be used to give a history or science report. Students could describe an animal’s adaptations by making the animal they researched talk!

little-bird-tales

5. Little Bird Tales

Students can create digital books, add or draw photos and insert their very own voice with Little Bird Tales ! You could have each student create a page to create a class book. Click here for an example.

Cooperative learning idea: Older students can work in teams and create a digital book for a presentation. This is a great project for students who don’t enjoy giving oral presentations.

what-if-genie

6. What if? Genie

If students aren’t feeling inspired, have them ask the story genie ! The genie randomly generates a “what if?” question for kids. The “what if?” questions are crazy and imaginative, ones kids would have a blast writing about! Hit the genie square to generate a question.

Cooperative learning idea:  Students can share a computer, generate a “What if?” question, then go off and write! Then they can compare and contrast their results.

free-rice

7. Free Rice

Have students make a difference by practicing their math, chemistry, anatomy, geography, foreign language, vocabulary, grammar, humanities and even for the SAT. “For each answer they get right, 10 grains of rice is donated  through the World Food Programme to help end hunger.”

Cooperative learning idea: Students can go on Free Rice and calculate how much rice they donated as a group and create a graph to show their weekly results. This can be an ongoing project throughout the year. Groups can compare and contrast their results.

A free Animoto account lets students create 30-second videos, which can be challenging!

Cooperative learning idea: Have students explain something in 30 seconds through music and images. Above is an example of a water cycle video.

boggle

How many letters can you chain together to form a word? Point value: 3 or 4 letters = 1 point, 5 = 2 points, 6 = 3 points, 7 = 5 points, 8 or more = 11 points. Goal: Try to form as many words as you can before time runs out! Visit  Teacher Led  for a free letter generator!

Cooperative learning idea: Have students work in teams to create words. Then as a math project, they can create fractions (words created / how many times they rolled the dice) or graphs (compare/contrast the number of words created).

Technical assistance for the Ministry of Education’s WebGIS School Maintenance System

WebGIS Smart School Maintenance Module (SSMM)

Project duration: 2020-2022

Location : Jordan

List of Donor(s): Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)

Brief project overview:

The Ministry of Education officially launched the WebGIS School Maintenance System in March 2022 in partnership with UNESCO and GIZ, following extensive development and piloting. At the request of the MoE, the WebGIS Smart School Maintenance Module (SSMM) was developed for all school maintenance needs to be electronically captured, monitored, analyzed and used to inform evidence-based decision making related to corrective school maintenance and budget planning.     The SSMM complements the MoE’s Geographic Information System (GIS), which was implemented in 2016 with the support of UNESCO and linked to the MoE’s EMIS to optimize planning of school infrastructure and resources at all administrative levels of the Ministry. The SSMM does not only support the MoE school maintenance workflows, but also the prioritization, tracking, reporting, visualization as well as quality assurance of the overall MoE’s school maintenance procedures and regulations. The SSMM was also developed as a mobile-based application for Android and IOS users to ensure the full accessibility of the tool.

The MoE kicked off the Kingdom-wide roll out of the SSMM at the end of March 2022, training all 168 Field Engineers from 42 field directorates in Jordan. In July 2022, the 168 Field Engineers completed the training of SSMM at school-level, training 6,695 trainees from 3,730 schools.

A technical software training and handover was also delivered to six MoE technical staff to be fully sustained and maintained by assigned MoE WebGIS technical team, including the ability to fully administer the SSMM web and mobile applications and database and perform the necessary set of actions to configure, update or extract data from the database, as well as to troubleshoot some basic issues. Technical documentation for the SSMM web and hybrid mobile applications was finalized, translated and handed over to the MoE officials.

An orientation session on the WebGIS School Maintenance Indicators Visualization Module was also held for high-level relevant MoE officials.

This project was successfully completed in September 2022. Currently a phase III of WebGIS implementation is being prepared with the Ministry of Education, complemented by the System Strengthening Partnership Programme .

Objectives:

  • School maintenance needs are electronically captured, monitored, analyzed and used to inform evidence-based maintenance and budget planning within the Buildings & International Projects Department at MoE
  • Relevant MoE staff within central ministry and field directorate levels are equipped to utilize the smart school maintenance module using the enhanced WebGIS tool.

Areas of Intervention:

School Maintenance and Infrastructure Management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Education Management Information System (EMIS), Data, System Strengthening, Evidence-Based Education Planning and Policy.

2016 - Phase I of WebGIS support – The WebGIS tool was developed at the request of the MoE and was introduced to the Educational Planning and Research Department for better school infrastructure mapping and planning. The tool, which uses a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS), was customized as per MoE requirements, and training was provided to build the capacity of the MoE on the usage of the tool.

2018 - Phase II of WebGIS support – UNESCO, in partnership with GIZ, launched the “Technical assistance for the EMIS System and WebGIS tool for the School Maintenance System, Standards and Procedures” in support of the MoE. Under this initiative, further technical support was provided to the GIS Unit to enhance and update the tool to address emerging needs on school mapping and planning, while helping the Ministry establish an evidence-based approach for school maintenance work being handled by the MoE.

2019 - Request made by the MoE’s Buildings and International Projects Department to add enhanced facility management features to the WebGIS tool.- Following extensive technical consultations with the MoE, a hybrid decision-support system, known as the Smart School Maintenance Module (SSMM), including a mobile app, was developed as part of WebGIS and rolled-out Kingdom-wide, to improve the school maintenance process from both the planning and implementation perspective.

  • 2022 - Integration of the school maintenance workflow into WebGIS was completed, following system design, development and piloting. Through a cascade training led by 15 MoE Master Core trainers from the central level, and 168 Field Engineers from all 42 Field Directorates, 6,695 trainees from 3730 schools were trained on the use of the SSMM (including the mobile app)

Supports partnerships between two-year institutions of higher education, other academic institutions, industry and other entities to improve the education of technicians in science and engineering.

With a focus on two-year Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs), the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program supports the education of technicians for the high-technology fields that drive our nation's economy. The program involves partnerships between academic institutions (grades 7-12, IHEs), industry, and economic development agencies to promote improvement in the education of science and engineering technicians. It is strongly recommended that projects be faculty-led and required that courses and programs are credit-bearing, although materials developed may also be used for incumbent worker education. Materials may also be adapted and implemented as credit-bearing courses. The ATE program supports curriculum development; professional development of college faculty and secondary school teachers; career pathway development for both students and incumbent workers; and other activities including applied research projects that advance the knowledge base related to technician education.

The ATE program encourages partnerships with other entities that may impact technician education. For example, with

  • the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Manufacturing Extension Partnerships (MEPs) ( http://www.nist.gov/mep/index.cfm ) as applicable to support technician education programs and the industries they serve; and
  • Manufacturing USA Institutes ( https://manufacturing.gov/ ) addressing workforce development issues.

The ATE program encourages proposals from Minority Serving Institutions  as well as other institutions that support the recruitment, retention, and completion (certificate, degree, program) of the full spectrum of diverse talent that society has to offer, which includes underrepresented and underserved communities, in STEM technician education programs that award associate degrees.
