Doctoral programs.

The goal of the GSE PhD in Education is to prepare the next generation of leading education researchers. The cornerstone of the doctoral experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Education is the research apprenticeship that all students undertake, typically under the guidance of their academic advisor, but often with other Stanford faculty as well.

In this apprenticeship model, doctoral students are provided with a multi-year funding package that consists of opportunities each quarter to serve as teaching and research assistants for faculty members' courses and research projects. By this means, and in combination with the courses they take as part of their program, students are prepared over an approximately five-year period to excel as university teachers and education researchers.

The doctoral degree in Education at the GSE includes doctoral program requirements as well as a specialization, as listed below, overseen by a faculty committee from one of the GSE's three academic areas.

Doctoral Degrees

A doctoral degree requires the satisfactory completion of an approved program of advanced study and original research of high quality..

Please note that the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Science (ScD) degrees are awarded interchangeably by all departments in the School of Engineering and the School of Science, except in the fields of biology, cognitive science, neuroscience, medical engineering, and medical physics. This means that, excepting the departments outlined above, the coursework and expectations to earn a Doctor of Philosophy and for a Doctor of Science degree from these schools are generally the same. Doctoral students may choose which degree they wish to complete.

Applicants interested in graduate education should apply to the department or graduate program conducting research in the area of interest. Some departments require a doctoral candidate to take a “minor” program outside of the student’s principal field of study; if you wish to apply to one of these departments, please consider additional fields you may like to pursue.

Below is a list of programs and departments that offer doctoral-level degrees.

Ph.d. requirements.

  • Academics & Research
  • Programs & Requirements

Brown University awards more than 200 doctor of philosophy degrees annually.

The Brown Ph.D. is primarily a research degree. Teaching is an important part of many doctoral programs, and many departments require candidates for the Ph.D. to have teaching experience.

Brown University offers substantial financial support to doctoral students. All incoming doctoral students are guaranteed five years of support, which includes a stipend, full tuition remission, health-services fee, and a health-insurance subsidy. Doctoral students in the Humanities and Social Sciences are guaranteed six years of support. All promises of student support are subject to students making satisfactory academic progress, as determined by their programs of study. Please see related links for additional details regarding the University's commitment to doctoral education.

Ph.D. Funding

Funding guarantee, four general requirements for the doctor of philosophy.

The candidate must be formally admitted to his or her degree program.

The normal residency requirement is the equivalent of three Academic Years of full-time study beyond the bachelor's degree. Students who enter a PhD program at Brown already holding a master’s degree in a related field have a residency requirement equivalent to two Academic Years of full-time study upon entering the PhD program at Brown. Use of a previously earned master’s degree to reduce PhD residency requirements is contingent upon approval of the program Director of Graduate Study. Graduate work done at other institutions and not used in fulfillment of the requirements for any doctoral degree elsewhere may, on the approval of the program Director of Graduate Study, be counted in fulfillment of up to, but not exceeding, one year of the residency requirement. A student who desires credit for work done elsewhere should file a timely application with the program Director of Graduate Study; transfer credit forms are available through the  Office of the Registrar .

A student is advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D. when he or she has completed satisfactorily all the requirements, departmental and general, requisite to beginning work on the dissertation. Candidacy is determined by the department or program of study and certified by the Registrar. Most departments require a preliminary examination before advancing any student to candidacy. Most departments also require a final examination or defense. The examination is conducted by professors in the department and by such other members of the faculty as may be appointed.

The candidate must present a dissertation on a topic related to his or her area of specialization that presents the results of original research and gives evidence of excellent scholarship. The dissertation must be approved by the professor or committee under whose direction it is written and by the Graduate Council. All requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed within five years after advancement to candidacy.

Faculty Member Leaves Brown

If a faculty member working with a doctoral student leaves Brown for any reason before that student has completed his or her degree requirements, it may not always be possible for that faculty member to continue working with the student as an advisor. In such cases, departments will work with students to help them locate a new advisor.

Additional Requirements

Individual departments and programs may have additional requirements regarding the number of courses to be taken, proficiency in foreign languages, special examinations, and theses. The department should be consulted for specific information.

PhD Admissions

The PhD program in Psychology trains students for careers in research and teaching. In addition to a wide range of courses, the PhD program is characterized by close collaboration between students and their faculty advisors.

General Information

The Department of Psychology holistically reviews each candidate's complete application to assess the promise of a career in teaching and research. Consideration is based on various factors, including courses taken, grade point average, letters of recommendation, and the statement of purpose. Additionally, the Department of Psychology places considerable emphasis on research training, and admitted students have often been involved in independent research as undergraduate students or post-baccalaureate settings. Although there are no course requirements for admission, all applicants should have sufficient foundational knowledge and research experience to engage in graduate-level coursework and research.

We accept students with undergraduate degrees and those with both undergraduate and master's degrees. An undergraduate psychology major is not required; the Department welcomes applicants from other academic backgrounds.

Our application portal will open for the AY25-26 admissions cycle on September 15, 2024.

How to Apply

Once an applicant submits the recommenders' information, the recommenders will receive an automated email with instructions for submitting the letter. Late letters should be sent directly to psych-admissions [at] stanford.edu (psych-admissions[at]stanford[dot]edu) . Staff will add them to the application file if the review process is still underway. Still, the faculty reviewers are not obligated to re-review files for materials submitted after the deadline.

Generally, students will hear from us by the end of January.

The status of submitted applications can be viewed anytime by logging in to the   application portal .

The deadline to apply for the '25-26 PhD cohort this year is  November 30, 2024 . Applicants who are admitted to the program will matriculate in Autumn 2025.

Our next admissions cycle will open in September 2025 and have a November 30, 2025 deadline.

  • Required for non-native English speakers: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores, submitted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) electronically to Stanford.

Application Fee

The fee to apply for graduate study at Stanford is $125. Fee waivers are available for some applicants. Please visit Graduate Admissions for information on applying for an  Application Fee Waiver .

Application Review & Status Check

The Department of Psychology welcomes graduate applications from individuals with a broad range of life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds who would contribute to our community of scholars. The review of applications is holistic and individualized, considering each applicant’s academic record and accomplishments, letters of recommendation, and admissions essays to understand how an applicant’s life experiences have shaped their past and potential contributions to their field.

To check the status or activity of your application, please log into your  application account . You can also send reminders to recommenders who have not yet submitted their letter of recommendation.

Due to limited bandwidth, the Department of Psychology staff will not answer any phone or email queries about application status, including requests to confirm the receipt of official transcripts.

Our faculty will interview prospective students before making final admission decisions. Candidates who progress to the interview round will be informed in January. Interviews are generally conducted in February.

The Department of Psychology recognizes that the Supreme Court issued a ruling in June 2023 about the consideration of certain types of demographic information as part of an admission review. All applications submitted during upcoming application cycles will be reviewed in conformance with that decision.

Accounting & Management

Curriculum & coursework.

Our programs are full-time degree programs which officially begin in August. Students are expected to complete their program in five years. Typically, the first two years are spent on coursework, at the end of which students take a field exam, and then another three years on dissertation research and writing.

Students in the Accounting and Management program must complete a minimum of 13 semester-long doctoral courses in the areas of business management theory, economic theory, quantitative research methods, academic field seminars, and two MBA elective curriculum courses. In addition to HBS courses, students may take courses at other Harvard Schools and MIT.

Research & Dissertation

Students in accounting and management begin research in their first year typically by working with a faculty member. By their third and fourth years, most students are launched on a solid research and publication stream. In Accounting and Management, the dissertation may take the form of three publishable papers or one longer dissertation.

Recent questions students have explored include: the ways in which managers use retail-level marketing actions to influence the timing of consumer purchases in relation to their firms’ fiscal calendars and financial performance as well as those of their competitors; the role of accounting information in strategic human resource decisions; the evolution, consequences and institutional determinants of unregulated financial reporting practices; the effects of adopting rolling forecasts on forecast quality.

A Johns Hopkins postdoc, Herbert Baxter Adams, brought the seminar method of teaching from Germany, where he earned a PhD in 1876. The idea: That students would learn more by doing than by listening to lectures and taking exams.

That spirit of inquiry , of challenging the way things are done, lives on today in our nine academic divisions, all of which offer full-time graduate programs.

Applicants for admission to the M.M. or D.M.A. degree programs in performance or Graduate Artist Certificate in Music Performance (GAC) must pass an admission audition before a faculty panel. Live auditions are preferred for both music admission and award consideration.

Auditions will occur in one of two ways:

  • Live Audition/Interview  - Will occur on campus in Denton on our specified dates . Applicants invited for a live audition/interview will be notified through Acceptd messaging of their scheduled day/time.
  • Final Video Audition  - Available for applicants who are unable to attend the auditions in person and/or who apply after live auditions are full and closed. Following review of the video audition, our faculty might require an interview or virtual audition if additional information is needed.

Please note, a screening (preliminary video audition) is required for live audition consideration. Information regarding the screening is available within the area listing on the repertoire pages:

- Classical repertoire requirements - Jazz repertoire requirements and additional information

Applicants for admission to the M.M. and D.M.A. degree programs in conducting must submit the College of Music application and preliminary audition video  by the   first Monday in December . Qualified applicants will be invited to campus for a live audition and interview. For information regarding the conducting requirements, please see the degree-specific admission requirements .

*M.A., M.M. Jazz Composition/Arranging, M.M.Ed. and Ph.D. applicants need only complete steps 1 and 2. In lieu of an audition, applicants to these programs will submit a portfolio. Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in an interview.

We encourage you to do this  prior  to submitting the application to UNT.  Applications and video auditions for Spring 2025 admission consideration (if applicable) must be submitted on or before  NOVEMBER 1, 2024.

Funding Resources

As with most universities, there are three broad classes of funding for graduate students at The University of Texas at Austin: Teaching, Research and Fellowships.

The Physics Department has over 100 Teaching Assistant (TA) positions each long semester (fewer in the Summer) for support of incoming and continuing doctoral students. New students typically receive a commitment for five years of funding as a TA (Teaching Assistant), GRA (Graduate Research Assistant), or Fellow, all are contingent upon adequate progress toward completing the degree.

First-year TA positions can be augmented with one of the department's endowed fellowships at the discretion of the Graduate Advisor. Dean’s Strategic Fellowships and Provost’s Graduate Excellence Fellowships are available for some students.

A selection of The Department’s endowed fellowships (available for recruitment purposes) includes:

  • Lawrence C. Biedenharn, Jr. Endowment for Excellence,
  • Cécile DeWitt-Morette and Bryce DeWitt Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Physics,
  • A. Wilson Nolle Endowed Graduate Fellowship,
  • The John A. Wheeler Fellowship in Physics, and
  • The Robert N. Little Graduate Fellowship in Physics

All applicants are considered for a wide range of recruitment fellowships from the Department, the College of Natural Sciences, and The Graduate School—there is no separate application for funding and all doctoral students are funded as described above.

The Department actively encourages all of its students to take advantage of funding opportunities from  sources outside of the University , including those that are  wholly extramural .

phd doctoral program

CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Drug Court program recently announced two graduates of its program led by Cullman County District Judge Chad Floyd and the Cullman County Drug Court staff.

The court offered its congratulations to its newest graduates Christina Ladner and “G.R.”

Floyd said completing the program is a huge accomplishment.

“The fact is that not every individual who enters into the program successfully completes it,” Floyd said. “When we post pictures of a graduate of the program, I want folks to know that this individual has been clean and sober for a period of at least 12 months. They have been drug screened on a random basis.  They have met every requirement of our program with respect to intensive outpatient treatment and self-care at AA or NA.”

Floyd said they have also completed at least 52 hours of service in the community.

“The two individuals who graduated this week were able to make it through their entire term of participation in our program without a single sanction or slip up between them,” Floyd said. “They both did an excellent job and I was proud to have persons of their character in our program.”
