Common app personal essay.

The essay demonstrates your ability to write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want the readers of your application to know about you apart from courses, grades, and test scores? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay of no more than 650 words, using the prompt to inspire and structure your response. Remember: 650 words is your limit, not your goal. Use the full range if you need it, but don‘t feel obligated to do so.

Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?

Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you‘ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

How to Write a Supplemental Essay for College Applications

Discover tips for tackling writing supplements, and read a sample essay from a current student.

A supplemental essay gives you an opportunity to tell the admissions committee about something you weren't able to cover in your main essay.

Prospective students are usually aware that they must write an essay as part of the college application process . But they may not know that some schools will ask for additional writing samples such as a supplemental essay.

Avoid These College Application Mistakes

Courtney Rubin and Cole Claybourn July 26, 2023

molloy college supplemental essays

These writing supplements are usually shorter than the main college essay , but they're no less important, experts say.

"Every word counts in getting your story across," says Deborah Davis, president and founder of Davis Education & Career Consultants LLC, based in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Some colleges ask for just one supplemental essay while others may require several.

For example, Wake Forest University in North Carolina had six additional questions for prospective students to respond to on its 2020 undergraduate admissions application. However, a couple of the questions asked applicants to write lists – for instance, a personal top 10 list – rather than a full paragraph or two.

Supplemental essay prompts come in all shapes and sizes. In some cases, schools let applicants choose from several options. For instance, the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill 's fall 2019-20 application included four prompts – such as "What do you hope will change about the place where you live?" – from which prospective students had to select two.

Davis says two of the most common prompts she's seen are "What do you want to major in?" and "Tell us about a favorite activity."

While word counts for supplemental essays vary, they tend to be limited.

Wake Forest has a 150-word limit for each of its supplements, says Tamara Blocker, the university's senior associate dean of admissions. UNC caps applicants' short answer responses at 250 words each, according to the school's website.

In contrast, The Common Application , a platform that allows students to apply to multiple colleges at once, has a suggested 650-word limit for the main essay and 250 words for others.

These types of written responses are more like vignettes or snapshots, rather than full-blown essays, says Stephen Farmer, vice provost for enrollment and undergraduate admissions at UNC.

"I think – I hope, anyway – that students feel the opportunity maybe in the shorter responses to worry less about form and just be a little more open with us," he says.

To help prospective students familiarize themselves with supplemental essays, U.S. News obtained an example from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. Ryan Sheehan from Wallingford, Pennsylvania, wrote the short piece and is a computer science major in the class of 2021.

As part of his application, Sheehan responded to the following prompt: "There is a Quaker saying: 'Let your life speak.' Describe the environment in which you were raised – your family, home, neighborhood, or community – and how it influenced the person you are today."

"As the son of two journalists, I have grown up under a lifelong inquisition: How is your room such a mess? Can you please stop chasing the cat? Will you come down from the tree already? Granted, those are all from this past year, but the point still stands. Like any good journalists, my parents have also always had a propensity for uncovering the truth. On the third night that I had my license, I decided to go to the library to study. Before 15 minutes had passed, I noticed the librarian peering at me through the shelves before quickly averting her eyes and whispering, "He's here," into her phone. Even so, regardless of how many spies they've hired over the years, I have always looked up to my parents immensely. However, I have found my inherited inquisitiveness to be a trait most useful in a place far from the realm of reporting: the robotics lab. After four years of spending almost more time in the lab than at home, I have learned that nothing is more important than asking the right questions. As a programmer, I need to be able to communicate with my builders. Come press time, if I don't interview them properly, our robot will invariably end up as a hunk of unresponsive aluminum. To make a machine, the team must work as one. So although I may be writing source code instead of a breaking story, I am glad I had such nosy parents after all."

Karen Richardson, former dean of undergraduate admissions and enrollment management at Tufts who is now dean of admission at Princeton University in New Jersey, explained why she liked this response: "This is a great essay because, in just 250 words, it shows rather than tells the reader who Ryan is and the things that matter to him. It gives us a sense of his family life and academic interests, and it even shows us he has a sense of humor. As an admissions committee, we learned a lot about Ryan in just one paragraph."

Here are five additional tips from admissions officers to help prospective college students craft strong supplemental essays.

Answer the Question

This may seem obvious, but applicants should carefully read a supplemental essay prompt and make sure they understand what it is asking before answering it, Richardson says.

Prospective students may want to reuse an essay they wrote for another college, but that doesn't always work because supplemental questions tend to be more tailored to an individual institution, she says.

Start With an Outline

Applicants may have their own writing process, but Davis encourages those she works with to create outlines. She says prospective students should brainstorm the personal qualities, skills or experiences they would like to convey in their supplemental essays.

Don't Repeat Yourself

Supplemental essays are a chance for applicants to give more information to an admissions committee to further show why they are a good fit for a school, Davis says. So prospective students should make sure they aren't repeating something that's already been covered in their main essay.

Narrow Your Focus

Probably the biggest mistake applicants make in supplemental essays is choosing a topic that's too big, Farmer says. For example, he says prospective students may attempt to settle a complex political issue in just one paragraph.

"I think it's better to do something small and do it well than to do something big and skate over the surface," he says.

Maintain Your Voice

It's a good idea for applicants to ask another person for editing help, but too much input can be detrimental to an essay, experts say. If lots of people – teachers, parents, peers – read and weigh in on an essay, they can weaken how clearly a student's voice comes through in the writing.

"It's great to read something that sounds like it was written by an 18-year-old and not by a machine," Farmer says, "or by someone who's trying to be prematurely middle-aged."

Best Ways to Prepare for 5 Different Supplemental Essays

Supplemental essays are an important part of your college applications. Here are the different types of writing themes and the best ways to prepare for each.

These are additional materials that many colleges and universities require so they can get to know an applicant even better. Here’s a look at five common types of supplemental writing prompts, plus tips to help you master each task and write outstanding college essays.

Questions to ask before writing

Before drafting any supplemental essays, write out a simple paragraph or bullet points responding to this question: When they’re done reading this essay, what will readers know about me that they can’t find out from the rest of my application? You should also be able to answer the following questions about your respective essay:

  • What is the prompt really asking ?
  • What appeals to you about the school or program? (Consider experiences you want to have as well as ways you’d like to extend current experiences into the future.)
  • What do you want admission officers to learn about you from reading it?
  • Why are you compatible with this school/program?
  • What examples/illustrations can you share to demonstrate your compatibility?

Types of supplemental essays

You may encounter several types of supplemental essays when applying to colleges. Each one should be approached with different writing techniques and questions you should ask yourself. Here are just a few examples.

1. Activity essays

As with any other essay, you should start your activities essay by making sure you understand the prompt. The key question “What do I want readers to know about me that they can’t find out from the rest of my application?” is particularly relevant here. They already know you participate in this activity after reading your résumé. But they don’t know how you’ve benefitted from this experience, why it’s important to you, how you’ve contributed, or how it has influenced you. Answer some or all these questions as you’re brainstorming story ideas :

  • What does my experience demonstrate about me?
  • What have I learned from this activity?

  • How have I grown since I started it?

  • What has this experience meant to me?

These answers will help you formulate a response to your cornerstone question . Once you know what you want readers to learn, it’s time to choose a story (or stories) to illustrate that characteristic (or characteristics).

Always remember: The emphasis should be on characteristics (e.g., I’m confident ; I know how to relax under stressful circumstances ; I’m a strong team member ), not accomplishments (e.g ., I led our team to victory ; I got the highest score ; I was the youngest player to finish the tournament ).

2. Community essays

With community-based supplements, you’ll want to start by listing all the different communities you’re a part of. Examples include:

  • School groups
  • Religious groups
  • Sports teams
  • Volunteer sites
  • Ethnic community

Community can mean many things, so try to get as specific as possible. After that, you have some questions to ask yourself:

  • Which of these communities feels most important and meaningful ? Usually, this will be a smaller group—your Temple youth group, local cousins who get together every Sunday night, or fellow volunteers at the senior center.
  • How has this community shaped you? How have you grown or changed because of that community? For example, if you’ve become more of a leader because you’re the oldest of your cousins, readers should know you’re a strong leader, trustworthy, and independent.

Once you know what you want readers to learn about you, choose a story (or stories) that illustrate that. It could start like this:

Last summer, I took all my cousins to the beach alone. Our parents trusted me to make sure everyone swam safely and didn’t get too much sun. That was the first time I was entirely responsible for that group. How has being a part of my community of cousins brought me to this point? Because my aunts and uncles have trusted me with their children since I was young, and because of that, I’ve learned responsibility and independence, which I apply in many different situations.

3. Creative essays

When responding to open, creative questions, start with an open and creative mindset. Free writing is your most valuable tool here. Start by writing freely in response to the prompt, but don’t try to craft an essay just yet. Instead, wander and explore. See where the prompt takes you. You can do this type of free writing in response to one or more prompts if the school offers various options. Free write for several 10- to 15-minute sessions over the course of several days; it’ll help you let your story flow more freely. Remember, this type of essay requires time and a relaxed frame of mind, so don’t save it for the last minute.

4. Common Application COVID-19 question

Community disruptions such as COVID-19 and natural disasters can have deep and long-lasting impacts on many students. If you need it, the COVID-19 Common App question is yours to describe those impacts. Colleges care about the effects it’s had on your health and well-being, safety, family circumstances, plans for the future, and education, including access to reliable technology and quiet study spaces.

This prompt is optional, should be answered in 250 words or fewer, and appears in the Additional Information section of the Common App. Despite it being optional, some schools strongly encourage students to answer this prompt. If you complete this essay, only share information that’s new and can’t be found elsewhere on your application. Start by answering these three questions:

  • What did you do during the pandemic?
  • What were you unable to do?
  • How do you feel about it?

Note: This is purely an informational question; reflection isn’t really necessary in the way it might be in other essays. This is a question that deserves an honest answer, but there’s no right or wrong response.

5. The “Why This College?” essay

Many schools will ask you to explain why you want to attend their school. In addition to this core question, you should be asking two other key questions to answer this type of prompt:

  • What attracts you to the school as well as your potential program/major?
  • How does what you know about the program mesh with what you want the reader to know about you?

If you’re attracted to your program of interest because of their larger generalized courses paired with smaller group learning opportunities, you could emphasize your ability to work well independently and in a group. On the other hand, if you’re excited to explore areas you’re not familiar with, you might talk about your never-ending curiosity. As with all essays, focus on content before structure and polish, and make sure you understand the purpose of the essay.

Whether you're interested in managerial positions in corporate settings or specialized roles in governmental agencies, the career possibilities are as varied as the topics you'll explore in your courses. Beyond the financial aspects, this degree cultivates essential skills that are highly sought after in the modern workforce — creativity, critical thinking, and complex problem-solving abilities. Moreover, the program encourages a multicultural perspective, providing you with a distinct advantage in our increasingly globalized society.

Pathways Our Program Offers

At Molloy, we understand that one size doesn't fit all. That's why our Department of Sociology & Anthropology offers a variety of minors to complement your major. Interested in the corporate world? Pair your Sociology major with the Business and Diversity & Inclusion Studies minor. Intrigued by criminal behavior? How about a combination of Criminology and Sociology?

The possibilities are endless, and they're all designed to set you on a specific career trajectory that aligns with your interests. Each of these minors offers a unique lens through which to view and understand the complexities of society, and they're all designed to be seamlessly integrated with your main field of study. Let’s take a look at the minors our Sociology program offers:

Diversity & Inclusion Studies delves into the complexities of societal structures, focusing on issues like race, gender, and social class. At Molloy, this 15-credit minor is interdisciplinary and designed to deepen your understanding of diversity, inclusion, power, and privilege. It's a perfect complement to any major that involves working with diverse populations, and it's open to students from all disciplines.

Applied Sociological Research is all about using data and methodology to understand social phenomena. Molloy's minor in this field equips you for future research careers, providing you with the tools to conduct meaningful studies. This minor is particularly beneficial if you're looking to delve into research roles post-graduation.

Anthropology is the comprehensive study of human societies, both past and present. If you're intrigued by human origins or global communities, Molloy's Anthropology minor is your gateway to a deeper understanding. This minor helps you navigate our interconnected world and sharpens your critical thinking and communication skills. It's designed to give you the confidence to work either individually or as part of a team.

Sociology, the study of human behavior within society, is also available as a minor at Molloy. This minor is a natural extension of the major, offering additional depth in understanding social structures and behaviors. Students from other majors are welcome to declare Sociology as a minor, making it a versatile choice for those interested in a multi-disciplinary approach to their education.

Planning to Take a Pre-Med Route?

If medical school is on your radar, a Sociology degree from Molloy University can be a game-changer. You might be surprised to learn that a significant percentage — 30%, to be exact — of Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) questions focus on social sciences. It's a clear indicator of how vital understanding societal factors is in the medical field.

Courses tailored for pre-med students, such as "Introduction to Sociology" and "Sociology of Health and Illness," provide insights that can give you a competitive edge when tackling the MCAT.

But the relevance goes beyond test prep. Understanding the social and cultural dimensions of health can make you a more empathetic and effective healthcare provider. For instance, knowing the societal barriers to nutritious food access can inform your approach to patient counseling on nutrition.

Key benefits of Sociology for pre-med students

  • Enhanced MCAT Preparedness.
  • Deeper understanding of socio-cultural health factors.
  • Development of empathy and communication skills.

So, if you're planning to walk the halls of a medical school someday, consider how a Sociology degree can enrich your journey, both academically and professionally.

Professor Anthony Cantiello came to Molloy in 2007 after several years of teaching experience. His love for teaching sociology is apparent since he is currently teaching at three other Long Island colleges:  Farmingdale State College, St. Joseph's College and Suffolk Community College. He comes from a working class family and is the only one in his family who has attended college. He earned both his Bachelor's degree in sociology, and his Master's degree in sociology from the City College of New York, while working full-time as a New York City taxi driver. He continued for his doctorate in sociology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, however, while registered for his last three courses, he was forced to withdraw from the program for personal reasons. For practical reasons, he then became a police officer and remained in that occupation for twenty-three years.  He continued to "think sociologically" however and realized his education had assisted him in numerous types of situation. As a result, his main goal became assisting students in understanding the relevance of sociology in their everyday lives. In 2009, he was finally able to complete his doctorate. Cantiello's main areas of interests are Crime and Deviance, Social Problems, Work and Family. While he has taught Introductory Sociology, Criminology, and Sociology of the Family at Molloy, he teaches online courses at St. Joseph's College and has created new upper level courses at Farmingdale State, such as America-Dream and Reality and The Sociology of Environmental Disasters.

Most college applicants fail to put adequate time into a supplemental college essay. The Common Application's personal essay allows a student to write a single essay for multiple colleges. The supplemental college essay, however, needs to be different for every application. Thus, it's tempting to dash off a generic and vague piece that can be used at multiple schools, resulting in a  weak essay .

Don't make this mistake. Your "Why This College" essay must be specific, demonstrating a high level of interest in and commitment to this particular school. To better understand how to ace this supplemental essay prompt, let's analyze a sample essay written for Oberlin College .

The essay prompt reads:

"Given your interests, values, and goals, explain why Oberlin College will help you grow (as a student and a person) during your undergraduate years."

Sample Supplemental Essay

I visited 18 colleges over the past year, yet Oberlin is the one place that most spoke to my interests. Early in my college search I learned that I prefer a liberal arts college to a larger university. The collaboration between the faculty and undergraduate students, the sense of community, and the flexible, interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum are all important to me. Also, my high school experience was greatly enriched by the diversity of the student body, and I am impressed by Oberlin’s rich history and its current efforts connected to inclusiveness and equality. To say the least, I’d be proud to say I attended the first coeducational college in the country.
I plan to major in Environmental Studies at Oberlin. After my campus tour , I took some extra time to visit the Adam Joseph Lewis Center. It’s an amazing space and the students I chatted with spoke highly of their professors. I became truly interested in issues of sustainability during my volunteer work in the Hudson River Valley, and everything I’ve learned about Oberlin makes it seem the ideal place for me to continue exploring and building upon those interests. I am also impressed by Oberlin’s Creativity and Leadership Project. I’ve been a bit of an entrepreneur ever since second grade when I made a dollar producing and performing The Runaway Bunny for my extended family. I’m drawn to a program that supports the move from classroom learning to creative hands-on, real-world applications.
Finally, as the rest of my application clearly demonstrates, music is an important part of my life. I’ve been playing the trumpet since fourth grade, and I hope to continue performing and developing my skills throughout college. What better place than Oberlin to do so? With more performances than days in the year and a large group of talented musicians in the Conservatory of Music, Oberlin is an ideal place for exploring my love of both music and the environment.

Understanding the Essay Prompt

To understand the strength of the essay, we must first look at the prompt: the admissions officers at Oberlin want you to "explain why Oberlin College will help you grow." This sounds straightforward, but be careful. You're not being asked to explain how college, in general, will help you grow, nor are you being asked how attending a small liberal arts school will help you grow. The admissions offers want to hear how  Oberlin , in particular, will help you grow, so the essay needs to include specific information about Oberlin College.

A strong "Why This College" essay will make a case for why the school in question is a good fit for the student. The case should be made by connecting facts about the school—unique opportunities, educational values, campus culture, et cetera—with the student's goals, values, and interests.

From the Admissions Desk

"We want to see [in the "Why This School" essay] that students understand the unique educational model at High Point University. We know that students have access to more information than ever before and that most colleges focus on the classroom experience. We want students who desire 25% of their time to be experiential ... who want to grow as people of character with strong values and to fully immerse themselves in our life skills education."

–Kerr Ramsay Vice President for Undergraduate Admissions, High Point University

A good way to see if you've responded to the prompt well is to swap out the name of the college you're applying to with the name of any other college. If the essay still makes sense once you do a global replace of the school name, you haven't written a good supplemental essay.

A Critique of the Supplemental Essay

The sample essay certainly succeeds on this front. If we were to substitute "Kenyon College" for "Oberlin College" in the essay, the essay would not make sense. The details in the essay are unique to Oberlin. Demonstrated interest can play a meaningful role in the admissions process, and this applicant has clearly demonstrated that she knows Oberlin well and her interest in the school is sincere.

Let's look at some of the essay's strengths:

  • The first paragraph makes several important points. First of all, we learn that the applicant has visited Oberlin. This may not seem like a big deal, but you'd be surprised how many students apply to a large number of colleges based on nothing but the schools' reputations. Also, the student notes that she wants to go to a  liberal arts college , not a larger  university . This information isn't really specific to Oberlin, but it does show that she has thought about the options available to her. The final point in this first paragraph gets more specific—the applicant is familiar with Oberlin and knows the school's socially progressive history.
  • The second paragraph is really the heart of this essay—the applicant wants to major in Environmental Studies, and she is clearly impressed with the program at Oberlin. She has visited the Environmental Studies building, and she knows of some of the unique opportunities offered at Oberlin. She has even talked with Oberlin students. This paragraph can't help but make a favorable impression on the admissions folks—the applicant is drawn to Oberlin, and she clearly knows exactly  why  she likes Oberlin.
  • The final paragraph adds another important dimension to the application. Not only does the student find the Environmental Studies program attractive, but her love of music makes Oberlin an even better match. Oberlin has a top-rated music conservatory, so the applicant's dual love of music and Environmental Studies makes Oberlin a natural match for her.

Admissions officers can't help but feel that Oberlin is a great match for this applicant. She knows the school well, and her interests and goals line up perfectly with Oberlin's strengths. This short essay will certainly be a positive piece of her application.

A Final Word About Supplemental Essays

The content of your supplemental essay is extremely important, and poor decisions on this front can lead to a weak supplemental essay . But content isn't everything. You also need to focus on the presentation of your ideas. Make sure your essay is entirely free of any grammatical errors, and be sure to avoid common stylistic problems . The admissions officers need to conclude that you are sincerely interested in attending their school and that you are an excellent writer.

More Than 80 Colleges With No Supplemental Essays 2023-24

By Brandie Erickson • October 30, 2023 • BS/MD Admissions Consulting College Application College Search Press

The college application process is daunting and time-consuming for many high school students. Most students will apply to anywhere from 5 -15 colleges, with some applying to even more than 20 schools if they apply to high-ranking schools like Ivy Leagues or competitive programs like direct medical programs.

While applications like the Common Application or Scoir aim to streamline the application process by allowing students to write one universal personal statement that gets sent to all schools, they likely still need to write school-specific supplemental essays. These essays can range from “why do you want to attend this school?” to “tell us about a challenge.” Most students commit to months of effort to complete all their supplemental essays.

molloy college supplemental essays

Luckily, not all schools require these additional essays, which could help students bulk up their college list without adding much more effort. Here are a few benefits of applying to schools with no supplemental essays.

  • Reduced Stress – Applying to schools that don’t require supplemental essays means students have less pressure on them. Instead of spending hours each week on essays, they focus on a few of their top schools that do require supplemental essays or concentrate on keeping their grades up.
  • Broader Range of Schools – Despite not requiring supplemental essays, some schools on the list are high-ranking universities. By not having to write additional essays, students can also apply to a wider range of schools, whether it is a research institution like Case Western Reserve University or a liberal arts college like Grinnell University. Therefore, when students are making their final decisions on where they want to apply to college, they will have more time to decide what type of school will fit their career goals and learning abilities best.
  • Helps Level The Admissions Playing Field – For students who don’t think their talents are in writing but have solid grades and standardized test scores, applying to more schools that don’t require supplemental essays might be advantageous. Because they aren’t sending additional essays to their school, they will be primarily judged based on their personal statement, grades, extracurricular activities and standardized test scores, among other factors. Students who don’t have the resources or guidance to craft compelling supplemental essays should take advantage of those universities.

Over 80 Schools With No Supplemental Essays In 2023-24

The following schools have no required supplemental essays to apply to their college. However, they might have additional essays for specific programs. For example, if a student is interested in New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Honors Program and Accelerated BS/MD program , they would be required to write two additional essays to be considered.

Some of these schools will also have optional essays that students can write. Drexel University has the following optional prompt: “Drexel is committed to preparing each new generation of students to become productive, professional and civic-minded members of the community while continuing to focus on how we can contribute to solving some of society’s greatest challenges.  What do you view as a challenge facing society that you would like to contribute to solving? How would a Drexel education aid you in taking the first step toward a solution? (250 words or less).” While it can give students who write these optional prompts a competitive edge because it can help demonstrate interest in the school, it isn’t required.

When adding these schools to your list, make sure to review the requirements before you apply. You can see the full list in our Forbes article here .

How to Write the Occidental College Essays 2023-2024

Occidental College is a private liberal arts college in Los Angeles, California. With over 40 majors and minors, Occidental (Oxy) highlights research as a major component of an undergraduate’s career, and offers extensive experiential learning opportunities in the greater L.A. area.

Oxy is pretty selective and it’s consistently ranked in the top 40 liberal arts college in the country. Hoping to become an Oxy tiger? Writing strong supplemental essays can certainly give you a boost. Here’s our advice for this year’s supplements.

Read these Occidental College essay examples to inspire your writing.

Oxy Supplemental Essay Prompts

Essay questions.

Prompt 1: Why are you applying to Occidental? Why do you think Occidental is the right place for you to pursue your interests? (150 – 200 words)

Prompt 2: Please answer one of the following questions (200 – 300 words):

Option A: Oxy’s central mission emphasizes the value of community amidst diversity. What do you value in a community and how do you see your perspectives and life experiences enhancing it?

Option b: briefly describe a current event or social movement that is affecting a place that is important to you. describe its significance to you and the future implications for that community. how do you anticipate an oxy education helping you better understand and respond to that event/movement, option c: research is an integral part of an oxy education. completing a senior comprehensive is a requirement of every oxy student and there are a myriad of opportunities for research throughout your four years. imagine you were just awarded one of our research grants for a project of your choice. what are you researching and why, short answer, what is the first song you would play for your roommates on move-in day (150 characters), why are you applying to occidental why do you think occidental is the right place for you to pursue your interests (150-200 words).

This is a fairly standard “ Why This College? ” essay, so it requires you to reflect on your academic goals and then do some research on how Occidental can support those goals. The college website is the best place to start; make sure to look into specific programs, courses, clubs, and other opportunities offered.

Be sure to pick aspects of Oxy that are relatively unique and wouldn’t be found at other schools, and link back to why. If you’re too generic, admissions officers may not feel like you are genuinely interested in Occidental.

Linking your personal interests to what Occidental offers will solidify your points. Do the resources you mention combine two of your academic passions? Is there a program that would be extremely beneficial for your ultimate career goals?

Here’s an example of a hypothetical student and the resources they might mention in their essay:

A student who wants work in sustainable agriculture would be drawn to the Environmental Science concentration and Food Studies minor. The Food Studies minor is an “interdisciplinary, inherently politicized field of scholarship, practice, and art that examines the relationship between food and all aspects of the human experience. This encompasses culture and biology, individuals and society, global pathways and local contexts.”

This student hopes to one day run their own regenerative farm, so they especially look forward to joining FEAST (Food, Energy, And Sustainability Team), a student-run organic garden with chickens, to get hands-on experience. They also plan to take the course Sustainable Oxy: Urban Agriculture and Sustainable Landscape Practicum since food access and security is important to them; having grown up in an urban, low-income environment, they want their future farm to fund urban community gardens to bring fresh, nutritious food to the locals.

Formatting-wise, your essay can begin with a short anecdote related to your academic interests. When did you first realize your academic passion? What are the thoughts or emotions you have as your participate in this activity/interest?

From there, you should explain what your academic goals are and why you have those goals.

Finally, show how Occidental College can uniquely support your academic interests, mentioning specific courses, research opportunities, programs, and extracurriculars.

Please answer one of the following questions (200 – 300 words):

This prompt is essentially asking you one question ─ are you more research oriented or more passionate about social justice? Decide by thinking through your activities list and career direction.

Option A is the classic Diversity Essay , and is a great question to show off your values and beliefs. Before you write, remember that there are two parts to this question: what you value in a community and how you see yourself enhancing that community. With only 300 words, you likely can discuss only one thing you value in a community and one example of how you would enhance it.

The first part of the prompt—what you value in the community—should be something genuine, and something that you could find at Occidental. Saying you value the competitive spirit of a Division I sports team is nice, but Occidental doesn’t have any Division I teams, so you might not seem like such a good fit for the school.

What you value in a community can vary pretty widely:

  • Being able to have your deeply-held religious beliefs respectfully challenged in a safe environment.
  • Multiculturalism and diversity of perspectives, whether political, social, etc.
  • Collaboration and bouncing ideas off of each other
  • Supporting the more vulnerable members of the community
  • Advocating for change as a collective force

Once you’ve chosen what it is you value in a community, think about how you can pursue those at Occidental.

  • Someone who values religion and multi-faith literacy might want to be involved in one of Oxy’s nine religious groups.
  • Those who value multiculturalism might want to live in Pauley Hall, a themed living community that aims to promote diversity and equip its residents to thrive in a globalized world.

After you’ve figured out your answer to those first two questions, you need to turn to thinking about how your perspectives and experiences would enhance the community. Show what role you might play on Oxy’s campus.

Here are some examples of this:

  • Throughout high school, maybe you were an active member of a religious group that frequently hosted multi-faith discussions and events. You felt like these events were safe places for attendees to dissect their deeply-held beliefs, and respectfully present contrasting perspectives. You want to bring this open-mindedness to Oxy, especially when it comes to religious life.
  • Perhaps you grew up in a multicultural home, as your parents are from different countries. This allowed you to experience two very different cultures and meet people from around the world. You want to share the food and customs from those cultures, and promote diversity at Oxy.

Remember that this essay is not only about community, but how you interact with a community. Once you’ve figured out what you value in a community, think about how you can bring your experiences to a similar community at Occidental and enhance it.

For any of the options, introduce your essay with a brief anecdote that explains the what and why of your interest. Here is an example for Option C:

The 2008 financial crisis hit my family hard. After both my parents lost their jobs, my family had to make sacrifices to keep a roof over our heads. My meals came to consist of rice and beans and beans and rice, and on Sundays bologna with pasta. My frequent grumbling stomach was the one lifestyle adjustment I had trouble powering through, and so I learned about food insecurity. I would like to research solutions to make healthy food more accessible to all, so others can stay hungry for knowledge rather than protein.

Beyond the introduction is where the responses to each option will differ. Though Options B and C are both “Why X Interest” essays, Option C is about an academic research interest which you would take to Oxy, whereas Option B is asking for what social justice direction you would bring to campus.

Option B is about connecting yourself to the bigger picture after you have described a current event or social movement and why it is important to you. Make sure that you have a deep, genuine connection to the movement you write about ─ passion will make your message more convincing. Explain what change for good your chosen movement could bring about and why others should care about it like you. Conclude the essay by describing the “future implications” of the movement, not only in the place you have chosen, but also for Oxy. How could Oxy’s resources help the movement make a larger impact? Here is part of an example essay by a student with a Uyghur background about the Uyghur human rights movement:

The movement for Uyghur human rights is so crucial to me because the world is so silent. Xinjiang may be far away, but it is close to my heart ─ it is where my grandparents live, where I have fond memories of mutton rice and open fields and Eid. It is an interconnected place, where the Silk Road was once traveled and where humanity’s destiny lies today. If the world does not stand up for human rights, the human mosaic will lose one more piece, and more pieces will fall. The Uyghur human rights movement, and the advocacy work I have done with the Uyghur Human Rights Project, are significant because they are some of the only voices we have to make our voices heard on the world stage.

Oxy can help amplify our voices through its exceptional Kahane United Nations Program, which could allow me to intern at the UNHCR. Coupled with the interdisciplinary Diplomacy and World Affairs major, I would be empowered to influence the world’s decision makers of the need to support justice for the Uyghurs. From Professor Chase’s lectures on human rights and the transnational Muslim world to the campus’s uplifting activist culture, Oxy has unique resources and opportunities which would make the future of the Uyghur human rights movement much brighter.

Answering Option C is straightforward ─ explain what project you would like to take on for your senior “comp” as well as what research opportunities you would take advantage of in one of the departments listed in the prompt. Take your time to look into past senior comps and research opportunities, so you can pitch a plan for how you would utilize specific Oxy resources ─ professors, grants, classes, and access to LA ─ for your own research. For example, the student interested in food insecurity could talk about how they want to create rooftop gardens as their senior comp, in addition to researching ways to increase healthy donations to food banks at the Urban & Environmental Policy Institute.

Short Answer

This question is as simple and straightforward as it seems—what song would you play for your roommates? On the application, this is a one line answer; simply tell your readers what song it is. If you want to give a short explanation, that’s totally fine too, as you have up to 150 characters. Those extra characters would actually be a great opportunity to share more of your personality.

Again, avoid overthinking this answer and forcing something more “intellectual” or classical (unless you actually love classical music, which is totally cool to list!). Be as genuine with your answer as possible, though try to list a song that says something about you, rather than just listing whatever’s currently on the radio.

The song can be something that holds some meaning to you, or simply a song you really enjoy listening to. Either is acceptable!

Here are some good examples:

  • Danzón No.2 by Márquez (my bandmates and I couldn’t stop swaying to the catchy theme during rehearsal)
  • Runaway (U&I) by Galantis (perfect for an impromptu dance party)
  • Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson (super chill song to make moving in less stressful; I also make killer banana pancakes)

Make sure to include both the name of the song and the artist.
