PhD position in Mathematics of Spatial Networks - published June 2024
The aim of this fully funded PhD position is to develop the mathematical theory of spatial networks, and to explain why these networks exhibit specific emergent properties on a macro scale. Unlike conventional graphs, spatial networks exist within an embedding space, allowing us to consider well-defined scaling limits and to “zoom out,” viewing them as continua. Leveraging on the expertise of the network group in Utrecht, you will establish a framework for these limits and apply them to partial differential equations that arise. As such you will attempt to bridge the local topological constraints of networks with their global behaviour.
Keywords: graphs, analysis, probability, partial differential equations
Apply before July 8. More information at: https://www.uu.nl/en/organisation/working-at-utrecht-university/jobs/phd-position-in-mathematics-of-spatial-networks

PhD positions on Rigorous Algorithms for AI in Automation at TU Delft - published March 2024.
Do you want to make an impact in algorithms that formally guarantee reliability of AI in deployment?
When deploying AI, the real world is often different from simulations. To make AI more rigorous, we are looking for two PhD researchers to work on novel methods for verifying when AI adaptation is necessary, and for resolving violations in a human-interpretable way. You will conduct theoretical and empirical research at the intersection of logic, optimization, and machine learning for control, monitoring, and interpretability. Both PhD projects are inspired by real-world deployment of AI, with one leaning towards advancing theory and the other to be done in close collaboration with domain experts from the Netherlands Railways (NS), leading to significant scientific as well as practical impact.
You will be part of the Algorithmics Group in the Department of Software Technology of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. You will work in a dynamic and diverse environment of other PhD and postdoc researchers excited about making theoretical and algorithmic contributions in the field of intelligent decision making. You will be supervised by Dr. Anna Lukina (https://annalukina.com/) and Prof.Dr. Matthijs Spaan (https://www.st.ewi.tudelft.nl/mtjspaan/) or Prof.Dr. Mathijs de Weerdt (http://www.alg.ewi.tudelft.nl/weerdt/), depending on the project.
To be the successful candidate, you should:
- · have a Master’s degree in mathematics or computer science,
- · have firm foundations in mathematics/logic/formal methods as well as algorithm design, optimization, and implementation,
- · experience in visualization/illustration/design is a plus,
- · have strong programming skills,
- · be proficient in written and spoken English.
Are you interested in this vacancy? Please apply before March 29, 2024: https://www.tudelft.nl/over-tu-delft/werken-bij-tu-delft/vacatures/details?jobId=16571&jobTitle=PhD%20Position%20Rigorous%20Algorithms%20for%20AI%20in%20Automation%20

4-years PhD position in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network “InSilicoHealth" - Training the virtual twin professionals to support healthy ageing
Job Information
Offer description.
A 4-years PhD position is available in the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (MSCA-DN) InSilicoHealth - Training the virtual twin professionals to support healthy ageing, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme.
The research project will be done at Politecnico di Torino (POLITO), Italy, at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, for 3 year and 3 months, and at FAU, Germany, for 6 months. During the period at POLITO, a 3-months visit at the French company TwinSight is planned. The candidate will be enrolled in the PhD programme of POLITO in conjunction with UNITO “Bioengineering and Medical-Surgical Sciences”.
The doctoral candidate will conduct original research in the field of the development of digital twins of the human spine. In particular, he/she will work on the construction of finite element (FE) models starting from clinical images (Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance images) of cadaver specimens. Experimental data will be available to both develop and validate the FE models. The possibility to develop approaches to enable the development of subject-specific models incorporating subject-specific material properties obtained from clinical images for the vertebral bone and above all for the intervertebral disc will be deeply investigated. The 6 months spent in FAU will be particularly focused on the implementation of constitutive models for modelling the intervertebral disc soft tissues, while during the 3 months at TwinSight the candidate will be able to follow the process of integrating an in silico methodology within an industry setting.
InSilicoHealth programme
InSilicoHealth is an innovative Doctoral Network (DN) with the ambition to train a new generation of outstanding Doctoral Candidates (DC) that will become effective translators of the rapidly evolving digital technology to tackle existing and future challenges related with healthy ageing in Europe. The research focus of this DN lies in three key domains: the brain, heart, and musculoskeletal (MSK) systems. In the realm of digital technology, InSilicoHealth specifically focuses on virtual human twin (VHT) technology to enhance our understanding of the age-related adaptive changes of the complex human body through predictive multi-scale simulations. The research methodology employs knowledge-driven models enhanced by advanced data-driven inference techniques to optimize the health potential of older individuals.
Where to apply
Requirements.
The applicant should have completed a Master program in Biomedical/civil/mechanical Engineering.
Specific desirable compenetences are:
- Finite element modelling
- Visco-hyperleastic constitutive models implementation
- Fortran/Phyton/Matlab knowledge
- Confidence in dealing with clinical images
- Models validation through experimental data
- You have completed a master’s degree in Biomedical/Mechanical/Structural/Civil Engineering or possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate.
