Introduction

This feature enables individual extensions to the assignment submission date for individual students or teams (in team assignments).

Requirements

Moodle 2.3 required

Community bonding period

  • Refine the project proposal with community feedback
  • Define the mockups

Note about quizzes: On reviewing the quiz module feature - it is not really applicable to the assignment. The quiz is an online activity with realtime feedback while the assignment is an offline activity with intermittent feedback. So while it makes sense to be automatically transitioning the state of a quiz based on its due date, I do not feel that this makes sense for the assignment.

For the assignment we have some new settings. Firstly there is now an optional final date field which, if set, is the absolute final date for submissions or submission edits and no further changes will be allowed after this date. This is to ensure that the marking process can proceed and all versions of assignment submissions are final. There is also a new function available to markers, which is to grant individual due date extensions to students. This is governed by a new capability (mod/assign:grantextension). This allows you to set an extension date that must be after the due date and before or on the final date (if the final date is set).

Some scenarios:

1. "Require students click submit button" is enabled, Due date is 1/6/2012, Final date is 1/7/2012.

Up to the due date students can edit their assignment. When they are satisfied, they can click submit after which they cannot make any further changes. Before the due date the teacher can revert the assignment to draft and allow the student to make further changes and resubmit. After the due date, the student cannot make any more changes or submit the assignment (the assignment status stays as draft and a red flag on the grading table indicates this assignment is overdue - the marker can decide whether or not they should penalise the student for not submitting by the due date). If it is still before the final date, the marker can grant the student an extension which will allow only this student to edit and submit their assignment. The fact that an extension was granted is indicated on the grading page and in the grading table. If a submission is graded before the final date, a warning is shown on the grading page to indicate that some students may still be able to edit their assignments.

2. "Require students click submit button" is disabled, Due date is 1/6/2012, Final date is 1/7/2012.

Up to the due date students can edit their submission. After the due date they can no longer edit their submission. A teacher can grant them an extension - up until the final date which will allow them to make further changes. The extension is indicated on the grading table and the grading page. If a submission is graded before the final date, a warning is shown on the grading page to indicate that some students may still be able to edit their assignments.

3. "Require students click submit button" is disabled, Due date is 1/6/2012 No final date is set

Up to the due date students can edit their assignment. After the due date a teacher can grant an individual extension up to any specified date. The extension is indicated on the grading table and the grading page.

Instructors can now provide detailed feedback on assignment submissions without downloading them by using the Annotate PDF tool. This feature allows instructors to leave digital comments on students' work.

  • An Instructor of record , Other editing teacher , or Non-editing teacher role in a Bryn Mawr Moodle course

Enable annotate PDF for an assignment

  • Click the  Edit mode  toggle   button   in your course (if it isn't already on).
  • Click +Add an activity or resource in the course section where you wish for your assignment to appear.
  • From the list of activities, select Assignment.
  • Check the File Submissions  box (required).

  • Adjust the remaining settings as needed, then click   Save and Display  or  Save and return to course.

Mark with annotate PDF

  • Open the assignment in your Moodle course page for which Annotate PDF has been enabled.
  • On the Assignment  page, click Grade .

PDF submission appears to the left, and submission information appears to the right with the feedback box to the bottom.

  • Attach any files you want to add to your comments through the Feedback files  menu.

  • Click Save Changes to save as you go or Save and Show Next when you are finished with a submission and are ready to proceed to the next one.
  • To download a copy of any student's annotated submission, return to the Assignment  page and find the Annotate PDF  column. Pick the PDF you want to download and click its title. The PDF will download to your computer.

Ensure students submit good PDF's

The Annotate PDF feature only works with PDF files. If students submit files in other formats, Moodle will try to turn them into PDF's, but these conversions are unreliable. For best results, have your students save their assignments as PDF's before submission. You can also force students to submit assignments as PDF's as part of the assignment settings.

Note:  Some   students may not know how to save, export, or print files as PDF's. Add a link to Save a File as a PDF to your Moodle course page or assignment instructions to help.

If your students need to submit handwritten work, make them aware of the following:

  • On-campus students can scan documents as PDF's using the Canon multifunction copiers.
  • Free smartphone scanning apps allow students to create multi-page PDF documents using the phone’s camera. See  Office Lens: Scan papers or documents with your smartphone  for more information.

Creating an assignment

The Turnitin class end date will automatically be set to one month after the course end date in Moodle.

A Moodle Direct Version 2 offers the Turnitin Plagiarism Plugin, and can be integrated within the existing Moodle assignment module. When creating one of these activities, additional settings appear for the Turnitin plugin, which can be customized to provide an accurate similarity score.

  • Select the relevant course from your Moodle homepage.
  • Click the  Turn editing on  button to the right of your course homepage.

  • Select the  Add  button.
  • Enter your assignment's general information. Your assignment name must be entered, as well as the submission type.

  • Select Turnitin plagiarism plugin settings .

Customizing the Turnitin Plagiarism Plugin

  • The option to Display Similarity Reports to Student provides instructors with the ability to control whether students are allowed to view Similarity Reports within each created assignment.
  • Opt to allow or disallow any file type. By selecting Yes , submissions will be checked for similarity where possible, submissions will be available for download and online grading tools will be available where possible.
  • Opt to either store student papers in the standard repository or no repository. By storing papers in the standard repository, this will allow these papers to be checked against in this future. By selecting No repository , submitted papers will not be saved in the Turnitin repository. However, this means that if two students submit the same paper to the same assignment, Turnitin will not find any match.

If you do not select Yes for at least one of the Check against... options, then an Similarity Report will not be generated.

If resubmissions are allowed within Moodle, each resubmission will be treated as a unique submission by the student in the Turnitin database. While self-matching is automatically excluded within the same assignment, if a match is found in another assignment, it will match against all of the resubmissions of the student.

  • Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are allowed until due date) : Similarity Reports for the initial submission by each student user to this assignment will be generated immediately. Students may resubmit as often as the student wishes until the assignment due date. Similarity Reports for the fourth or subsequent submission will require a 24-hour delay before the Similarity Report begins processing. Only the latest submission is available to the instructor or student. Previous versions are removed. Student submissions will compare against one another within the assignment on the due date and time, which may result in a change in the Similarity Report similarity index and results at the due date and time. This option is typically used when students are self-reviewing and revising their submissions and able to view the Similarity Report. No resubmissions after the due date and time of the assignment.
  • Generate reports on due date (resubmissions are allowed until due date)  : Similarity Reports will not be generated for any submission until the due date and time of the assignment. Students may resubmit as many times as needed until the due date and time without receiving reports. Resubmissions may not be made after the due date and time of the assignment.

After three resubmissions, Similarity Report generation is subject to a 24-hour delay.

  • Bibliography - Text appearing in the bibliography, works cited, and references sections can be excluded.
  • Quoted Material - Text appearing in the quotes of student papers can be excluded.

This setting can be overridden in individual Similarity Reports.

If you could tag the Moodle versions that the zip file is intended for and then I can give it a quick test. For the source control URL, I would recommend that you rename the Github repository to follow the Moodle naming convention of moodle-{plugintype}_{pluginname} so for this plugin that would be moodle-report_assignment_files.
