Photos from the kickoff of Apple’s 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference

Today Apple kicked off its biggest and most exciting Worldwide Developers Conference yet, launching the weeklong event with a groundbreaking keynote at Apple Park attended by developers, students, and media, and watched by millions of people around the world via livestream and on demand.

Over the course of a presentation packed with trailblazing innovations and cutting-edge features, Apple unveiled Apple Vision Pro, a revolutionary spatial computer that seamlessly blends digital content with the physical world. Three Macs also debuted: The new MacBook Air is the world’s best 15-inch laptop, while Mac Studio with M2 Max and M2 Ultra, and Mac Pro with M2 Ultra are the most powerful Macs ever made. Additionally, new features coming to iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, watchOS 10, tvOS 17, and AirPods enable developers to go even further with their apps, and empower users to get even more out of their devices.

Photos of the day’s events are displayed below, along with highlights of all of the innovations featured in the keynote address.

Apple Vision Pro is a revolutionary spatial computer years ahead and unlike anything created before, scaling beyond the boundaries of a traditional display with a fully three-dimensional interface controlled by the most natural and intuitive inputs possible — a user’s eyes, hands, and voice. Featuring visionOS, the world’s first spatial operating system, Vision Pro lets users interact with digital content in a way that feels like it is physically present in their space.

With iOS 17 , updates to Phone, FaceTime, Messages, and more give users new ways to express themselves, share content or contact information, and view information at a glance with a feature called StandBy. iOS 17 also introduces Journal, an app that gives users a way to reflect and practice gratitude, and focus on their wellbeing.

With an expansive 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, the extraordinary performance of M2, and up to 18 hours of battery life, the 15-inch MacBook Air packs outstanding power and portability into a thin and light, fanless design. The world’s thinnest and best 15-inch laptop, the new MacBook Air is up to 12x faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Air, and up to twice as fast as the best-selling 15-inch PC laptop with a Core i7 processor — so users can work, play, or create just about anything, anywhere.

The new Mac Studio empowers pros to build the studio of their dreams — with groundbreaking performance and extensive connectivity in a compact form that lives right on their desk. With M2 Max and the new M2 Ultra , Mac Studio provides a big boost in performance versus the previous generation and a massive leap for users coming from older Macs.

Mac Pro , now featuring M2 Ultra, combines the unprecedented performance of Apple’s most powerful chip with the versatility of PCIe expansion. The new Mac Pro completes the Mac transition to Apple silicon and, together with the rest of Apple’s pro systems, gives users the most powerful and capable lineup of pro products Apple has ever offered.

watchOS 10 brings a reimagined interface to Apple Watch, giving users a fresh approach to quickly viewing information with redesigned apps, a Smart Stack to show relevant widgets right when they’re needed, and delightful new watch faces. Additionally, new features have been added to help cyclists and hikers track their activity, while the Mindfulness app allows users to discreetly and conveniently log their momentary emotions and daily moods.

iPadOS 17 brings iPad users more ways than ever to personalize the Lock Screen and interact with widgets, and express themselves like never before through Messages and FaceTime. The Health app also comes to iPad with interactive charts, and HealthKit enables developers to create innovative experiences designed for the iPad display.

macOS Sonoma brings a rich set of features that elevate the experience of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, including Widgets users can place anywhere. Gaming on Mac gets even better with the introduction of Game Mode, which delivers an optimized gaming experience.

For the first time ever, Apple TV 4K users can enjoy FaceTime on their TV with tvOS 17 for even more engaging conversations with family and friends. Center Stage keeps everyone in the room perfectly framed on the screen, even as they move around, while Split View lets users enjoy watching shows or movies with their loved ones during a SharePlay session while also seeing everyone on the FaceTime call.

With software updates arriving this fall, AirPods Pro (2nd generation) will unlock new capabilities to make it easier to use across environments and interactions with three powerful new features: Adaptive Audio, Personalized Volume, and Conversation Awareness. The entire lineup also gains new and improved features that make calls and Automatic Switching even more seamless.

How to watch Apple’s WWDC 2023 keynote live

Karen Haslam

Apple’s yearly Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) is a hugely important event, second in significance only to the company’s iPhone launch each fall. WWDC is important because, at the opening keynote presentation, we get to hear what Apple has in store for its various operating systems, and therefore for the devices that run them. If you own an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or Apple TV, WWDC will be relevant to you, and we strongly recommend that you watch the keynote.

Fortunately you don’t need an invite. The keynote will be available online for everyone to watch live, or to stream later. We have embedded the livestream below, so you can watch it here once the event starts. There are other options too, and we outline these below.

If you’re interested in watching the keynote, here’s everything you need to know. You can read more about WWDC 2023 , including the products we expect to launch, in a separate article.

When is the WWDC 2023 keynote?

The keynote kicks off WWDC at 10 a.m. PDT on June 5, 2023. The event will probably last about one to two hours. Here’s what that translates to around the world:

  • U.S.: 10 am (PDT); 11 am (MDT), noon (CDT), 1 pm (EDT)
  • Canada: 10 am (PDT); 11 am (MDT), noon (CDT), 1 pm EDT, 2 pm (ADT)
  • U.K.: 6 pm (BST)
  • Europe: 7 pm (CEST)
  • India: 10.30 pm (IST)
  • Singapore and China: June 6 at 1 am (CST)
  • Japan: June 6 at 2 am (JST)
  • Australia: June 6 at 1 am (AWST); 2.30 am (ACST); 3 am (AEST)
  • New Zealand: June 6 at 5 am (NZST)

How to watch the WWDC 2023 keynote

Apple will livestream the keynote presentation so anyone can watch, and we’ll embed the YouTube video above once it goes live. But there are other ways to watch the WWDC keynote depending on your device:

  • Watch on Apple’s YouTube channel .
  • Watch on Apple’s own website .
  • Watch via the TV app on an Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

In the past, Apple has also streamed the event live on Twitter. It doesn’t seem to be repeating this experiment, instead directing followers to apple.com, but there may well be tweets posted during the event.

When we get closer to the date of WWDC 2023 Apple’s special events page will have all the info you need, including the option to add it to your calendar.

How to watch the WWDC 2023 keynote on a Mac

  • On Apple’s website, either on the Apple Events page , or on apple.com .
  • On Apple’s YouTube channel .
  • In the TV app.

After the keynote’s initial airing, it will be available in Apple’s TV and Podcasts apps.

How to watch the WWDC 2023 keynote on iPhone or iPad

  • On the Apple website, either on the Apple Events page , or on apple.com
  • On Apple’s YouTube channel, either through Safari or via the YouTube app.

How to watch the WWDC 2023 keynote on Apple TV

You can watch the keynote via the TV app, which means you’ll need an Apple TV that supports the App Store and has the TV app.

Previously Apple hosted the WWDC keynote inside a dedicated Events app on the Apple TV but that app has since been made redundant. Instead, the keynote will appear as an option within the TV app.

How to watch the WWDC 2023 keynote on a PC

PC owners will need Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 to watch on Apple’s site. Or they can watch using YouTube as above.

How to watch the WWDC keynote on anything else…

Apple says other platforms may be able to access the stream using recent versions of Chrome or Firefox (MSE, H.264, and AAC required).

To watch, visit the Apple Events page .

How to watch the WWDC 2023 keynote at an Apple Store

In the past (pre-pandemic) local stores participated in broadcast events which the public was encouraged to sign up for on Apple’s website . Search for your local store to see if an event is happening.

Can I join WWDC 2023 sessions?

WWDC isn’t just the keynote. There are also in-depth sessions where developers can learn more about the various platforms and network with Apple staff and other members of the community. In the past, these sessions would have taken place in person; in the more recent past, Apple has allowed registered developers to access the WWDC sessions online. Keep an eye on Apple’s WWDC developer page for the latest details of the sessions running and how to access them. Developers are also encouraged to download the Apple Developer app for more information.

This year, as in 2022, there will be an in-person component to the event, and select invitees will be at Apple Park to watch the keynote ‘live’ (although the presentation will probably be a pre-recorded video). This means the lucky attendees will also get to attend the sessions in the flesh, along with a tour of the campus and other new perks . Tickets to this event were made available via a lottery, and this closed some time ago. If you haven’t heard by now, you’re not invited.

How to register as a developer

To register as a developer and gain access to the online components of WWDC (and qualify for the ticket lottery next year), head over to the Apple Developer Program registration page and click Start Your Enrollment at the bottom of the page. We run through the process here: How to join Apple’s beta program .

Registering as an Apple developer will give you access to support materials, and enable you to register Macs and iOS devices with Apple so you can use them to run testing software. You can sign in with your own Apple ID (recommended if you’re a single developer), or you can create an Apple ID just for the developer account (recommended if you’re developing for a company).

Apple charges $99 per year to be in the Developer Program. You may be able to have the fee waived if you meet the qualifications . Apple also provides of list of what tools and resources a membership provide.

Apple event: Watch the iPhone 15 reveal here

Beyond the smartphone, there could be new airpods and smartwatches..

Today's the day: Apple’s iPhone 15 event is upon us, and you can watch the stream right here and marvel at the spate of announcements beamed live from Cupertino. The keynote, subtitled “Wonderlust”, begins promptly at 1PM ET, or 10AM in the sunny environs of Apple’s California’s campus. As always, we’ll also have in-depth coverage on each of the announcements as they happen.

So what’s the company planning on unveiling? It’s a September keynote, typically referred to as the fall iPhone event, so the iPhone 15 will almost certainly take center stage. You can expect the typical offerings, with a standard iPhone 15, an iPhone 15 Plus, a high-end iPhone 15 Pro and the even higher-end iPhone 15 Pro Max (which might get rebranded to iPhone 15 Ultra.)

As for specs, leaks indicate that the iPhone 15 will kick off the USB-C era, finally eschewing the proprietary Lightning port. This move comes after European regulations forced Apple to adopt a more universal port standard. Since the company must comply to satisfy EU standards, the rest of the world will likely also reap the benefits of going with USB-C. Screen size should remain static and the top-tier models will likely still boast the company’s ProMotion, its rebranding of a 120Hz variable refresh rate display. All four models are rumored to get the Dynamic Island feature that launched with the high-end iPhone 14 options.

The iPhone 15 should get most of the attention here, but this is an Apple event, so expect the unexpected. New Apple Watch editions typically accompany iPhone releases, so look out for Apple Watch Series 9 and a refresh of the Apple Watch Ultra. Rumors suggest that the forthcoming smartwatches will feature a brand-new processor, the first major CPU upgrade since 2020.

AirPods are likely to get an unexciting refresh, with a switch from Lightning to USB-C being the standout feature. Software suites should also get some attention, including iOS 17, watchOS 10 and, potentially, iPadOS 17. It’s likely that macOS Sonoma will get more details and a concrete release date.

Finally, the uber-expensive and uber-cool Apple Vision Pro is set to launch early next year, so the keynote could show off some new features or software in development for the mixed-reality headset. Keep this page open and ready to go for the stream, and enjoy our updates from Deputy Editor Cherlynn Low, who's writing live from the Steve Jobs Theater, below.

While the iPhone 15 was undoubtedly the focus of Apple’s September 12th event, we also saw new AirPods Pro (second-generation) earbuds with a USB-C case plus two new updates to its watch line with the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 with new processors inside.

The iPhone 15 lineup’s most significant addition is a new USB-C port, while each model also comes with the Dynamic Island . The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max added an Action Button that replaces the mute toggle to go with new titanium bodies, ultra-thin bezels, and a higher starting price.

Apple also announced the new iOS 17 software update will be released on Monday, September 18th, and macOS Sonoma is coming on September 26th. New “FineWoven” accessories replaced the old leather cases, and its Emergency SOS via satellite feature can now cover car problems, too, thanks to a new partnership with AAA.

iOS 17.3 is out, adding Stolen Device Protection for your iPhone

The iPhone 15 Pro in hand.

iOS 17.3 is out, and it comes with a new security feature that’s supposed to prevent thieves from taking your iPhone and quickly taking over access to anything stored in iCloud as well as other important accounts like your bank or email. Instead of relying on your lock screen passcode for security (as thieves have learned to trick people into entering it in front of them before they take off with the phone), Stolen Device Protection requires you to scan your fingerprint or use Face ID when performing certain actions, such as viewing saved passwords or applying for a new Apple Card.

The feature also introduces a waiting period when performing more sensitive actions, such as changing your Apple ID password or your iPhone passcode. In the iOS 17.3 update note, Apple says, “Security Delay requires Face ID or Touch ID, an hour wait, and then an additional successful biometric authentication” before you can complete the process, ensuring the person who’s performing this action is actually you. Your iPhone will only require this extra layer of authentication when you’re away from “familiar locations such as home or work,” according to Apple.

Having already applied their screwdrivers and other tools to the iPhone 15 Pro , the folks at iFixit have now turned to the base iPhone 15 model , even looking at its internals under a microscope.

They also point out that these models lack the Pro version’s A17 chipset with an integrated USB controller that enables higher USB-C transfer speeds but still ding the phones for Apple’s software locks that hamper repairability outside of authorized shops with access to the company’s pairing tools.

Apple releases macOS Sonoma, with iOS-like widgets and Game Mode

A screenshot of the macOS Sonoma lock screen.

Apple injects a little more iOS into the Mac today as it releases macOS Sonoma , aka macOS 14.0. Sonoma brings with it features like persistent desktop widgets, a new iOS-style lock screen, and a game mode that promises better gaming on your Mac. The file clocks in at 7.7GB for us, so you’ll want to make sure you have a little space to get it in.

In a refreshing change, the Sonoma update is out just over a week after Apple dropped iOS 17 . The new version of the iPhone operating system hit, as always, very soon after its iPhone 15 event earlier this month , but the company usually takes about a month longer to get its next macOS version out the door. That can make for a sometimes frustrating dissonance given Apple’s ecosystem interplay, for those of us who tend to update our devices as soon as we can. (I need the ability to send The Verge ’s Alex Cranz annoying custom stickers in iMessage from my Mac, y’all.)

Resident Evil Village’s iPhone port will launch a day before Halloween

A screenshot of the tall lady from the iOS version of Village.

Capcom announced at Tokyo Game Show 2023 that Resident Evil Village for the iPhone 15 Pro phones and M1-and-up iPads will debut on October 30th. The game will cost $39.99 — $10 more than the macOS version — with the Winters’ Expansion DLC pack also available for another $19.99. The Resident Evil 4 remake for iPhones, iPads, and Macs is listed on Capcom’s site as “available 2023.”

Capcom says preorders for both games will hit the Apple App Store “soon.” The company adds that if you order Village and Winters’ Expansion during a launch window that the company will announce later, you’ll get an extra costume for Rosemary Winters in the Shadows of Rose DLC.

You asked, and we answered your burning iPhone 15 questions

Ever since our reviews for the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro went up on Tuesday morning, you’ve had a ton of questions to ask about the phones — in comments , on The Vergecast , on Threads, an Instagram App , and in a live Q&A .

How to customize the iPhone 15 Pro’s Action Button

Hand holding an iPhone will illustrations in back.

If you pick up an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, you’ll notice one thing missing: the mute switch. It’s been a fixture on iPhones since the very beginning, but the 15 Pro models have swapped it out for a new button that’s dubbed the Action Button .

Like the Action Button on the Apple Watch Ultra series, you can customize it to do almost anything you want. It can open up a specific mode on your camera, turn on your flashlight, and, if you’re crafty, even order your favorite seasonal beverage from your neighborhood Starbucks.

The iPhone 15 will now tell you how many charge cycles are on its battery

The iPhone 15 Pro (blue titanium) and 15 Pro Max (white titanium) standing next to one another.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Pro have several features that aren’t on past iPhones, and now we can add new battery information and control features to the list. As pointed out in this post by @Tech_Reve , a new section in the iOS 17 “About” screen shows how many charge cycles your battery has been through as well as its manufacturing date and when it was first used ( via MacRumors ).

Those on older phones still have third-party options like CoconutBattery for the Mac to get more information about the battery, but it would be nice to just, you know, have it already there. iOS Shortcuts are also an option for accessing this information, though Verge editor Dan Seifert says the one he’s been using for years no longer works after updating his phone to iOS 17.

Resident Evil Village on the iPhone 15 Pro actually looks pretty good

A photo of Resident Evil Village mirrored from an iPhone 15 Pro on an external monitor.

In a recent interview with IGN , an Apple executive claimed that the iPhone 15 Pro was “ going to be the best game console .” I was skeptical; although Apple boasted about the capabilities of its new GPU in its A17 Pro chip and said high-fidelity games like Resident Evil Village , the Resident Evil 4 remake, and Death Stranding would all be coming to the iPhone 15 Pro, I didn’t believe they would run very well in practice.

But after actually seeing footage of Resident Evil Village in action on an iPhone 15 Pro, I’m coming around to the idea that Apple’s vision isn’t as far out as I thought.

The smaller iPhone 16 Pro might get Apple’s new ‘tetraprism’ zoom lens

Apple iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max in white titanium.

Next year’s Pro iPhones are both “expected” to have the “tetraprism” zoom lens Apple is using for the 5x telephoto camera in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to a new post from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo . That tetraprism optical system, which is intended to replicate a 120mm lens of a full-frame camera, is exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max , so if it comes to the smaller iPhone Pro next year (which I’m guessing will be called the iPhone 16 Pro), both the Pro and Pro Max might be on closer footing.

Here’s how the tetraprism system works, as described by Apple’s Misha Scepanovic during Tuesday’s “Wonderlust” event :

Apple’s bigger iCloud Plus plans are now available

Illustration of the Apple logo on a yellow and teal background.

Apple’s new iCloud Plus plans offer more storage at a higher price — and they’re available to purchase now. Starting today, you can sign up for the 6TB plan at $29.99 / month or the 12TB plan for $59.99 / month.

Apple first revealed the new storage options during its iPhone 15 event last week , which it will offer alongside the existing 50GB plan for $0.99 / month, the 200GB plan for $2.99 / month, and the 2TB plan for $9.99 / month. While 6TB and 12TB may seem like a lot of storage space, the new plans could come in handy for professional photographers or hobbyists who want to take full advantage of the iPhone 15’s upgraded 48MP main camera or store hefty ProRes files.

Apple’s widget-heavy watchOS 10 is available to download

Widget showing three complications in watchOS 10

Along with iOS 17 , Apple has just released watchOS 10 , the newest version of its smartwatch operating system that fundamentally changes the way you interact with the Apple Watch by reincorporating widgets. This update, available on the Apple Watch Series 4 and up, comes just a few days ahead of the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra, both of which Apple will release on Friday along with the four new iPhone 15 models .

The new widgets include the Smart Stack that Apple added to iOS 14, which is a sort of customizable widget bundle that uses machine learning to surface the widgets it predicts you’ll want to see and use. Swiping up from the bottom brings up those widgets, and that has a big cascading effect on the OS. Control Center, where you go to toggle certain system settings like Wi-Fi, has been bumped over to the side button, which bumps the app switcher to a double-press on the digital crown.

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are now available

A hand holding up an iPhone 15 Pro model

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, Apple’s next major updates for the iPhone and iPad, are now available to download.

With iOS 17 , some of the biggest new features come to phone calls. Apple’s new Contact Posters let you pick a photo (or Memoji) and font that fill up the screen when you give someone a call. Live Voicemail will show you a real-time transcript as someone is leaving you a message. The end call button is also in a slightly new spot . Messages gets some improvements, too, including a new way to access iMessage apps, and thanks to iOS 17’s upgraded autocorrect, hopefully your texts will have fewer typos.

The 128GB iPhone 13, Pro 14, and 15 Pro are limited to 1080p / 30fps ProRes on their own, but with the iPhone 15 Pro you can record at 4K / 60fps if it’s connected to an external drive, as reported by MacRumors . I’m glad a workaround is available for people that might want to be able to record the higher-fidelity footage.

Apple’s USB-C shift could bring back the MagSafe Duo and Battery Pack

A picture of the USB-C port on the bottom of an iPhone 15

Mark Gurman writes in the subscriber edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg from this morning that he expects Apple to finish its transition to USB-C by 2025. Gurman says that, in addition to other products, he expects the company will release USB-C versions of the now-discontinued MagSafe Battery Pack and the MagSafe Duo “eventually. But don’t hold your breath.”

By comparison, Apple took either a little over a month or about two years to totally move over to Lightning, depending on how you look at it.

Apple continues to use our own mortality as marketing

A screenshot showing an iPhone with a happy birthday message

In recent years, Apple’s presentations have started to feature a new type of messaging: without an Apple Watch, you might be mauled by a bear , drown inside a sinking car, get stuck in a trash compactor, or even succumb to hypothermia after falling through an icy lake.

These disasters have always been averted by the presence of an Apple Watch. But this year, Apple’s messaging has started to change again: it’s not just the Apple Watch that can save you from possible death — but the iPhone, too.

If you’ve been dying for 4K wired video output on the iPhone, the iPhone 15 , just like other USB-C phones, has you covered (via 9to5Mac , @aaronp613 ).

Apple already has solutions for older iPhones among the few Lightning products the company still sells , but the most they offer is crummy 1080p video output. Terrible!

Now, through the magic of USB-C, the iPhone 15 supports pushing Dolby Vision and HDR10 video in 4K at 60Hz to your TV, if you insist .

A screenshot of the Apple support page detailing iPhone USB-C video output support.

Lightning was great, actually

Two Lightning connectors.

The world is rightfully celebrating the iPhone’s switch from Lightning to USB-C this week. People love to hate on Lightning — and they have good reasons to. Many of the world’s most popular devices now use USB-C ports, including Apple’s own iPads, meaning iPhone owners have been stuck toting around an extra cable just for their phone and its accessories.

But if you’ve been living in the Lightning world for the past decade like I have, things have been great anyway. I’m not ashamed to say it: I’m sad that Lightning is finally going away.

Apple executives spoke with IGN’s Taylor Lyles ( a Verge alum! ) this week about the iPhone 15 Pro’s gaming capabilities . Apple is predictably on-message, with one exec claiming the phone is going to be “the best game console.”

But the company does seem to be more interested in gaming than it has been in the past. In addition to marketing the iPhone 15 Pro as a great place to play games, it’s working on some cool stuff for Mac gaming, too .

I’m skeptical that the iPhone 15 Pro will actually be “the best game console,” but I’m all for Apple doing more to encourage developers make great games for its platforms.

Apple is now charging more for most Apple Watch battery swaps

Three Apple Watch Ultra 2s.

Apple has increased the price of most Apple Watch battery replacements, as reported by 9to5Mac . The swaps used to cost $79, but now, for Apple Watch Series 4 devices and newer, you’ll have to cough up $99. You can see the prices for yourself on the company’s Apple Watch Service and Repair website by sifting through different versions and models.

It’s unfortunate that some of the battery replacement fees are going up, but I’m also not surprised to see it. Apple bumped up the prices of battery replacements in some iPhones, iPads, and Macs by $20 to $50 earlier this year .

Preorders for the iPhone 15 just opened this morning, and delivery estimates for some models, including the iPhone 15 Pro Max, are getting pushed back well into October. You can still pick up the models in-store on September 22nd at some locations, however.

Preorders for the new iPhone 15 are now live — here’s where to get yours

A lineup of all colors of the iPhone 15.

Apple officially announced the new iPhone 15 at its Wonderlust event earlier this week, which is now up for preorder and expected to ship on September 22nd. Much like last year, there’s a baseline iPhone 15 , a larger iPhone 15 Plus, and a pair of Pro models known as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max . But while the expected processor bump to a new A17 Pro chip is here for the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max (the standard 15 and 15 Plus get last year’s A16 Bionic), what’s vastly different this time around is the presence of a USB-C charging / data port and the inclusion of Dynamic Island on all new models.

While we still have to see how all these new iPhones shape up in our upcoming reviews, early adopters now have a chance to put in their preorders. Below is a breakdown of the various iPhone 15 models and links to Apple’s pricing and configuration details as well as other retailers taking preorders.

That means that if you have a Backbone One controller for Android , it’ll work with any iPhone 15 devices, which have USB-C ports.

According to Backbone :

For new customers, all Backbone USB-C products now feature universal compatibility with all USB-C phones, including both Android and iPhone 15 devices. For existing customers, your Backbone USB-C product will automatically receive an update via the Backbone app that enables patent-pending universal compatibility. To update, connect your Backbone controller and launch the  Backbone App  on Android.

The Backbone One is a great controller, so I’m happy to see that the ones made for Android will work with iPhones, too.

Here’s why Apple put a Thread radio in the iPhone 15 Pro

Apple added Thread, a smart home networking protocol, to its iPhone 15 Pro line.

Following Apple’s iPhone 15 announcement and the news that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will come with a Thread radio , I did some more digging into how Apple might deploy this wireless connectivity protocol in its ecosystem.

The smart home is the obvious answer and the one Apple halfheartedly offered ( Thread is a main protocol for Matter ). But adding the low-power, low-bandwidth, mesh-based Thread protocol could also signal the company is moving away from relying solely on Bluetooth for connecting to peripherals like the Apple Watch. Here’s a look at some of the ways that new wireless connectivity could be put to use.

Rumors of Lightning’s death are just slightly exaggerated

Apple’s Lightning connector

This week, Apple confirmed longstanding rumors that it was finally abandoning the Lightning connector for USB-C with the debut of its iPhone 15 and 15 Pro phones. The connector’s  decade-long run  might be over, but that doesn’t mean you need to toss out all your Lightning cables — not yet, anyway.

There are still a number of products in Apple’s vast catalog that haven’t made the switch, and it’s a safe bet that many of them are due for USB-C refreshes in the near future. Here’s a list of everything still using Lightning that we could find new on the company’s online store.

Apple Event live stream: How to watch all the big announcements today

Here's how to watch the Apple Event live stream and see the Apple Watch 6 and other big products unveiled

wwdc tim cook

The Apple Event kicks off today in what figures to be the first in a series of fall product launches today. And when when Tim Cook takes center stage at the Time Flies event, you can expect to see several new products unveiled.

Most industry watchers believe that Apple will show off the new Apple Watch 6 , along with a cheaper Apple Watch SE . You can also expect a new iPad Air 4 with a full-screen design and a faster new iPad 8 .  We would not expect the i Phone 12 to debut at this event; it will likely launch later.

  • Apple Watch 6 : Release date, price, features and rumors
  • Apple Watch SE just leaked — meet the new cheap Apple Watch
  • Updating live : Apple Event live blog: All the big news as it happens

The company sent out invitations last week and posted an announcement on its events page promising a Sept. 15 live stream at 1 p.m. EDT/10 a.m. PDT. The event is being billed as “Time Flies,” which would seem to point to the Apple Watch being the focus. Bloomberg has also reported that the Sept. 15 is all about the Apple Watch 6 and a new iPad Air model.

If you don’t want to miss a moment of Apple’s big moment, here’s how you can live stream the Apple Event. We’ve also got a closer look at all the fall products Apple is working on that might be part of its fall product launches.

How to live stream the Apple Event

The Time Flies event gets underway at 1 p.m. EDT/10 a.m. PDT today (Sept. 15). There’s no way to attend in person — like Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference keynote in June, this is a pre-taped presentation that the company is live streaming.

You’ll be able to watch from the Apple Events website through a web browser. Anyone with an Apple TV can also watch on the big screen via the Apple Events app. You can also watch the Apple Event via YouTube , where Apple already has a placeholder.

So now that you know how to watch the Sept. 15 Apple event, here’s what you’re likely to see.

Apple Watch Series 6

The Apple Watch Series 6 is expected to replace the Apple Watch Series 5 and introduce a host of new capabilities including blood oxygen (or SpO2) monitoring. We already know that Apple Watch sleep tracking is happening, too, as it's a centerpiece of the watchOS 7 update.

where to watch apple presentation

Those new features, particularly sleep tracking, will require a performance boost, and Apple could address that with improved battery life. That could either be handled with a more power efficient chip or the use of a more efficient Micro LED display on the Apple Watch 6.

In addition to the Apple Watch 6, Apple will apparently release a lower-cost version, reportedly called the Apple Watch SE . Expect this smartwatch to draw on features from the Apple Watch 4 and 5, as Apple looks to stave off competition from other wearable makers who produce less expensive devices. This likely means the end of the Apple Watch 3 in Apple's lineup.

We could see the final release of watchOS 7 following up this summer's beta testing for the new smartwatch software. If Apple follow its past pattern, it would release the OS a few days before the new watches ship.

New iPad Air 4

Apple already released a new iPad Pro earlier this year, which leaves other parts of its tablet lineup seeking attention. A likely candidate for an update is the iPad Air, with at least one rumor monger claiming the iPad Air 4 could debut this fall.

Several features that Apple introduced with the iPad Pro could find their way into this new iPad, such as USB-C connectivity, Magic Keyboard support and a newer A12Z Bionic processor. The new iPad Air could also look a lot like the iPad Pro, too. (And at least one report suggests a potentially higher price for the new tablet.)

A last-minute Apple Event leak from Evan Blass says the new iPad Air will feature Apple's newest A14 chip, which we expected to debut on the iPhone12. We don't put a lot of weight behind this rumor, but it's possible.

As with watchOS, there's a new version of iPadOS in the works. It's possible Apple could announce a launch date for iPadOS 14 timed with the release of any new iPads. Of course, since iPadOS is so closely intertwined with iOS 14 , Apple's phone software could be ready to launch, too — unless that release is timed for whenever the iPhone 12 appears.

Apple Silicon MacBook

At WWDC, Apple unveiled plans to make its own laptop chips. The first Apple Silicon MacBooks are expected to arrive this year, A rumor earlier this week claimed that a 14-inch MacBook Pro with an Apple-built processor would debut at the Sept. 15 event, but the claim seems dubious. Earlier rumors had pointed to a lower-cost laptop like the MacBook being the first Apple Silicon release.

A more likely scenario is that Apple holds a separate product event that includes any Apple Silicon announcements. In its preview of tomorrow's Time Flies event, Bloomberg says that the first Apple Silicon-based Macs are expected "by November."

AirPods Studio, AirTags and other possibilities

Given the success of its AirPods wireless earbuds, Apple could be looking to branch out into headphones as well. The AirPods Studio headphones are rumored to be in the works, and these over-the-ear headphones are likely to feature active noise cancellation along with a Transparency feature to let in outside noises when you need to hear the world around you.

where to watch apple presentation

AirTags have been rumored for more than a year now. These are device trackers that will help you find things like keys and other valuable objects that have a tendency to go missing. AirTags are expected to work with the U1 Ultra Wideband sensor found in recent iPhones. (Basically, the iPhone 11 and later, including — we would presume — the new iPhone 12 models.)

The Bloomberg report claiming the Sept. 15 event will focus primarily on the Apple Watch also says that a smaller version of the HomePod speaker will debut there. Apple is also rumored to be working on a revived version of the AirPower wireless charging mat it scrapped more than a year ago.

It’s not just hardware that Apple’s working on. Over the summer, word leaked out that Apple was planning to launch an Apple One bundle that would bring together its news, music, streaming TV and gaming services into one single subscription. Code hinting at the Apple One bundle was recently spotted in the Apple Music app for Android, suggesting a launch is imminent; that launch was supposed to happen with the iPhone 12, though.

What about the iPhone 12?

So when is the iPhone’s time to shine? The new iPhones aren’t expected to ship until October, so it’s expected a launch event would happen closer to that date. Still, a JP Morgan report raises the possibility of the iPhone 12 making a surprise appearance at the Apple Watch event .

If the iPhone 12 doesn’t appear on Sept. 15, it certainly won't be because there's not a lot to say about them. Apple is reportedly planning four models that introduce significant changes to its phone lineup.

iPhone 12 renders

The four models include a 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max along with a smaller 5.4-inch iPhone 12 as the two affordable options in Apple's lineup. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are expected to debut as well, with larger screens than their iPhone 11 Pro counterparts.

All four iPhone 12 models should feature 5G connectivity, making these the first Apple phones capable of delivering the faster wireless speeds. 5G phones have yet to really take off, but it's thought that once the iPhone adds support for the new networking standard, it will become more widely adopted.

Besides the differing screen sizes, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max could both feature OLED panels. Previously, Apple has used an LCD screen in the iPhone 11 model that those phones are expected to replace.

Even more substantive changes are planned for the iPhone 12 Pro models. Apple is widely expected to add a LiDAR sensor to the triple camera array on the back of the new phones, which will help support augmented reality apps. There's also a rumor that the screens on the Pro models could support a faster refresh rate, though not everyone agrees that this feature is likely.

What's also up in the air is just when we'll see the new iPhones. Apple will likely ship the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max in October. It's possible the iPhone 12 Pro models could ship later, as Apple uses a staggered launch to deal with production deals caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.

More Apple events to come?

If the rumors are true, and the iPhone 12 doesn't join the Apple Watch 6 and iPad Air 4 at today's Time Flies event, it's all but certain Apple will be doing this all again in a few weeks. We'd expect at least one additional Apple event, either in late September or early October, to show off the new iPhones.

Apple Silicon-based Macs could also debut at that time (again, if they're not featured in the Sept. 15 event). Or Apple could really fill up our fall calendar with yet another event specifically devoted to its MacBook plans.

Whatever happens, expect to hear a lot coming out of Cupertino over the course of the next month or so.

  • As expected, Apple has invited members of the press/influencers to cities including New York City and London to watch today’s event. Presumably, these people will also get hands-on time with the new hardware once the event concludes.
  • As of 9am ET, the Apple Store still hasn’t gone down. This could signal that the new iPads won’t be available for purchase today. Or, it could be that Apple just doesn’t think the iPad event hype is worthy of halting product sales for an hour.

iPad launch event: How to watch and everything we expect to see

Published on May 7, 2024

Apple iPad Pro M2 2022 logo and apple pencil

  • Apple’s Let Loose event will occur today at 7 am PT / 10 am ET. Those interested can watch it live on multiple platforms.
  • We expect Apple to unveil new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, the Apple Pencil 3/Apple Pencil Pro, and an overhauled Magic Keyboard.
  • While we aren’t expecting any Mac upgrades during this event, the M4 chip could debut as an iPad Pro exclusive.

The day has finally come! Apple’s Let Loose event is in just a few hours, and we’re anticipating some major iPad hardware upgrades for the first time in over a year and a half. Like previous launch events, you can watch it live on multiple platforms.

How to watch the iPad launch event

Apple’s Let Loose event starts later today at 7 am PT / 10 am ET. It is expected to last for around 35 minutes only, making it one of the shortest events in Apple’s history. To watch the livestream, you can head to one of the following platforms:

  • YouTube : The official livestream on YouTube is the most accessible way to watch the iPad event, as it is supported on pretty much all relevant operating systems and adapts to poor network conditions.
  • Apple.com : The livestream on Apple’s Events website tends to be a few seconds ahead of YouTube’s, but it may not load smoothly on slower networks.
  • Apple TV app : The Apple TV app’s livestream is similar to that of Apple.com, and it’s available on all Apple devices by default. As an added bonus, those with a Vision Pro can watch the event through this app and even use the SharePlay feature to enjoy it with their friends.

Once the event concludes, you can re-watch it on demand through the same platforms.

What to expect from Apple’s Let Loose event

We expect Apple’s Let Loose event to revolve exclusively around new iPad models and accessories. These could include:

  • iPad Pro (2024) : 2024’s iPad Pro could offer 11.1- and 12.9-inch variants, featuring OLED panels, thinner bezels, M3 or M4 chip, a $700 price hike, a landscape-positioned front camera, and MagSafe support.
  • iPad Air 6 : Meanwhile, the iPad Air 6 could feature 10.9- and 12.9-inch size options, an M2 chip, a landscape front-facing camera, and more.
  • iPad accessories: Apart from the actual iPads, we could see some fresh accessories. These may include the Apple Pencil 3/Apple Pencil Pro, with support for haptic feedback, squeeze detection, and interchangeable tips, along with the overhauled Magic Keyboard.

Make sure to check our coverage during the Let Loose event to stay updated with everything Apple announces.

Watch Apple’s iPhone 13 Launch Event Right Here

The pandemic’s time elasticity vortex may have you constantly wondering what day it is , but there’s at least one certainty in gadget land each fall: Apple will launch a new iPhone . Apple is hosting its annual fall hardware event this morning, and, as usual, the entire tech industry (and anyone who’s been thinking it’s time to buy a new iPhone) will be watching—online—to get a sense of how Apple is both responding to and advancing trends in consumer tech.

We know one thing for sure heading into the media event: There will be a new iPhone in at least two variations. (TBD on whether it will be called “iPhone 13”—maybe Apple will realize that the numeral naming convention is starting to get a bit ridiculous.) An early report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that some of the biggest enhancements to the new iPhone will be camera features, including a higher-quality video format, a bokeh effect for video capture, and “smarter” filters. Unsurprisingly, the new iPhones will also be powered by Apple’s newest custom chip, and they will finally catch up to Samsung’s flagship phones in terms of screen refresh rate. And an investors’ note from Wedbush Securities’ Dan Ives has suggested that the high-end “Pro” model of the new iPhone might have a whopping 1-terabyte storage option.

Other rumor roundups have pointed to a redesigned iPad mini, as well as new AirPods, as part of the fall hardware launch. The invitation to the virtual event included a reference to “California streaming” and contained an image that suggested augmented reality might be a part of the event. (There was even an AR easter egg hidden in the invite.)

Some of the more significant news might be around what’s not immediately available for preorder this week: the Apple Watch . The Apple Watch Series 7 will reportedly be delayed due to production issues, though some reports have also indicated that the hurdles may be cleared in time for today's event. A production delay on a well-established product suggests that the Series 7 watch, whenever it launches, might include a significant design change or the inclusion of new features that go beyond run-of-the-mill activity tracking. But it also shows that Apple is not immune to the manufacturing troubles or supply constraints affecting the rest of the consumer tech industry.

Apple’s fall hardware event is also happening at a time of reckoning for the company. It has weathered the pandemic remarkably well so far, as have many tech companies, with consumers clamoring for the smartphones, tablets, laptops, and web services that enable remote working, learning, exercising, unwinding, and connecting. But Apple’s sheer bigness and influence in our lives has also come into sharper focus this year, with the Epic trial , the company’s presence in China , its controversial decision (and then walk-back ) to scan iCloud photos, and even unrest within its US workforce. An iPhone launch is no longer just an iPhone launch. Then again, for a certain set of consumers who are just wondering if they should get a new iPhone … it’s an iPhone launch.

Apple's presentation will start at 1 pm Eastern, 10 am Pacific, on Tuesday, September 14 . You can stream it in the player above. You can also view the stream on Apple’s website or on the company’s YouTube channel .

You can also watch it in the Apple TV app. Now that Apple has its own streaming service, it also has a dedicated video app on mobile devices, Apple TV boxes, Roku boxes, and in some smart TVs. You can open that app and find the option to stream today's event whether or not you subscribe to the monthly Apple TV+ streaming service.

We'd recommend launching the stream on your television using either your YouTube app or the Apple TV app; virtual events still aren’t quite as exciting as attending in-person ones, but watching it on a larger screen at least makes it feel like an event. Besides, if you watch it on your television, that frees up your laptop for tweeting snarkily into the Apple enthusiast Twitterverse (soon, no doubt, to become the “metaverse”).

Expect Apple's presentation to last anywhere from 60 minutes to two hours. And, of course, once the event ends, come back to WIRED.com. We’ll be rounding up the most significant news and offering our analysis of the event.
