Exploring thesis writing experiences of the master's level students from Nepali universities

Profile image of Ashok Raj Khati

2020, Scholars' Journal

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the thesis writing practices of master's level students in Nepali universities. To discuss the central issue and support the main argument of the paper, I relate some thesis writing anecdotes and experiences of master's level students from the Nepali universities. The central argument of the paper is that thesis writing as a requirement to receive a degree at any cost is based on the traditional model which considers the process of writing as a highly mental and cognitive activity. As this model seems to be incapable of capturing the context in which the writing takes place, the socio-cultural theoretical orientation offering a more culturally sensitive view of academic writing practices has been increasingly gaining recognizable space in Nepali academia.

This paper has been prepared with an objective to provide the official guidelines to the MBS students to write the thesis and prepare the project work assignment, and teachers to guide their students in writing the thesis and preparing the project work assignment. So, this paper has included formats of thesis and project work assignment prescribed by Office of the Dean, Faculty of Management, Tribhuvan University and necessary procedures of the submission of thesis and project work assignment. WRITING IS THE IMPORTANT aspect in the syllabus of all the programs in Faculty of Management (FOM). In bachelor program, Bachelor in Business Studies (BBS), students have to write a field report in their third year on the elective course in sectoral area, in all the semester programs like Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor in Information Management (BIM), Bachelor in Hotel Management (BHM) and Bachelor in Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM), the students have to write project work or term paper. The business students at master level need more orientation and more depth in their writing process so that they feel comfortable in reading as well as independent writing during their graduation from FOM. 1. Need and Objective of Thesis/Project Work The need of thesis writing or project work writing in Master of Business Studies (MBS) level in FOM is to develop the student's skill on doing independent research work in their specialization field and to enable them to present their work on a standard format of writing. The exercise that the students go through during the research process and writing process becomes practical training for them that shall be highly beneficial to them in gaining practical knowledge. Therefore, realizing the importance of writing in the master level, thesis writing, or project work writing has been made compulsory in MBS program. 2. Objective of the Paper The objective of this paper is to highlight the procedures of Thesis/Project Work Writing in MBS level of FOM and the practices being adopted in the faculty. The paper also aims to raise some practical issues based on the experience of students, guide teachers, expert teachers and the administration; both campuses and dean office. 3. Procedures of Thesis / Project Work Writing The thesis or project work writing is compulsory in master level of FOM in the respective specialization courses. MBS students who have passed all the courses of the first year program are eligible to write the thesis under the supervision of a faculty member of the campus or central department. The students who have not completed the first year, that is, failed in one or more courses are not allowed to write thesis. However, the students are allowed to write project work in such case. It has been observed that the students who

English Review: Journal of English Education

This is a report of a study designed to examine the process of thesis—a final (research-based) paper for undergrads prior to academic completion—writing of English Department students who graduated in Academic Year 2007/2008. Using a descriptive method, this case study aimed to describe the stages, to identify the problems, and to explore the techniques of solving problems used by respondents in the thesis writing by involving six students who had engaged in writing and research project course. The data concerning writing stages, problems, and coping with strategies were collected by using questionnaires, interviews, and documentation (thesis). The results showed that all participants went through the thesis writing stages determined by Faculty of Adab of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati, Bandung, namely: 1) Starting process; 2) Researching; 3) Reporting; and 4) Doing consultation. These also showed that all respondents encountered: 1) Procedural problems, which were likely to be the major problems shared by all respondents; 2) Academic problems; and 3) Non-academic problems. However, whatever problems they dealt with, each of them had his/ her own strategies to cope with. The procedural and academic problems were coped with by reading, doing consultation, and peer-collaboration. Meanwhile, non-academic problems were solved by having a rest and managing time.

The present study aims at investigating the challenges that non-native English-Speaking students face when writing a thesis. In order to explore this issue, a quantitative research method was used, by means of a survey questionnaire, which addresses MA students of English in three universities in Algeria. Consequently, in order to find out the challenges they face when writing a thesis, a questionnaire was designed and administrated as the main instrument of the study. The total number of participants was 120 second-year MA students. The data was analysed statistically using the SPSS programme. The findings show that second-year MA students face challenges in writing a thesis, such as citing references and following the academic guidelines while the discussion section of a thesis is considered the most difficult part to write during this process.

Assessing students’ needs is an integral part of English for specific purposes (ESP) syllabus design. Due to the significance of writing in the English for business specific purposes, there has been increasing interest in ESP studies to assess students’ writing needs. This study aimed at exploring writing needs of Bachelor of Business Studies students of Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu, Nepal. Ninety two Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) first year students and 10 English teachers of TU took part in this study. Questionnaires served as the main tools for conducting needs analysis (NA). The findings revealed that both the groups of participants (students and teachers) perceived all seven sub-skills of writing as ‘important’. There is consistency between students’ perceptions of importance of subskills of writing and teachers’ perception of importance of the sub-skills. Regarding the perceived competence, teacher participants found their students’ abilities to be “not very good”...

This research aimed to seek the light on how the advisors made a use of feedback during supervisory panel and find out how different ways and types of feedback impacted on student-writers’ thesis outcomes. Qualitative study was applied by involving three tenured lecturers at College of Islamic Studies, in Java as the research subjects. Two data collection techniques were applied, such as interview and documentation, to trace evidence on what types of feedback used, how students noticed, and how they impacted on subsequent drafts. This study revealed that indirect feedback using error codes and commentary was the most frequent form used during the advisory session. However, the mere use of feedback could only serve a short-term impact on the development of writing, and even it seemed only to spoon-feed them which could create burdens in writing. It was quite evident that engaging them in such self-regulated and interdependence group works, through problem-solving discussion and peer ...

Kirne Power Plant is a planned expansion of Khimti I Hydro Power Plant in Nepal. During the monsoon period there is a lot of excess water, and the the plan is to utilize this water in an extra power plant during the monsoon. The same tunnel as for Khimti I is to be used for the whole volume flow. A new external pressure shaft is planned for the water down to the new power house of Kirne. The hydrology is studied in this thesis, and a flow of 11 m3/s can be utilized in Kirne through 80% of the monsoon, through the rest of the period, the flow is lower, on the average. The flow limit is found based on the head loss and surges in the water way. The sediment basin will have to be doubled in size to handle the doubling of the volume flow. The placing of the basin can be on the opposite riverbank of the existing settling basin. Another possibility is to build the planned power plant Khimti II upstream Khimti I, and handle the sediments there. Excavation of a volume of 170 m3 is necessary at the top of the surge shaft, to give room for the upsurges. The down-surges are reduced by prolonging the opening time of the turbines and valves. The new pressure shaft will be a 1800 meter long external shaft of steel, with an optimal pipe diameter of 2,16 meter. The shaft will be external due to difficult conditions in the rock, and experiences of the building of Khimti I. It will be shown that the best solution for Kirne is to install one Pelton turbine wiht five nozzles, or two Pelton turbines with three nozzles each, in the power plant. Two Pelton turbines will give a better production than one, but at the same time the costs of the power house, and the turbines will increase. The size of the turbine will be 64 MW for one turbine, and 32 MW each, if two smaller turbines are chosen. The production will be about 240 GWh depending of the flow through the year, which can be up to 30% less than the average. The income of Kirne will be about 13-14 MUSD, depending on the final choices. In order to finish this thesis, a lot of assumptions are made. The power evacuation and agreements with locals and national governments are not investigated. This is done to narrow the scope of the thesis, but at these points, the largest risks of the project are placed.

How much does an essay cost?

Starting your search for an agency, you need to carefully study the services of each option. There are a lot of specialists in this area, so prices vary in a wide range. But you need to remember that the quality of work directly depends on the cost. Decide immediately what is more important to you - financial savings or the result.

Companies always indicate how much 1000 characters of text costs, so that the client understands what price to expect and whether it is worth continuing to cooperate.

At Essayswriting, it all depends on the timeline you put in it. Professional authors can write an essay in 3 hours, if there is a certain volume, but it must be borne in mind that with such a service the price will be the highest. The cheapest estimate is the work that needs to be done in 14 days. Then 275 words will cost you $ 10, while 3 hours will cost you $ 50. Please, take into consideration that VAT tax is totally included in the mentioned prices. The tax will be charged only from EU customers.

When choosing an agency, try to pay more attention to the level of professionalism, and then evaluate the high cost of work.
