Discipline: English , Grammar

This undertaking quantitatively assessed the grammar proficiency of Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba college students to identify weaknesses and eventually improve instruction and the quality of learning of students.

Using the descriptive method of research, the researcher assessed the college students’ grammar proficiency by using a teacher-made questionnaire to identify the specific areas of grammar difficulties. A 50-item multiple choice test, which evaluated knowledge of the 10 areas of grammar, was specifically used. Grammar areas were based on 30 common grammatical errors of second language users resulting from the study done by Andrea Lungsford and Robert Corner of the University of California in San Diego. Demographic profile of students, as well as their perceptions on the importance of grammar to the use of correct English, was considered. Using proportional stratified random sampling, this study tested 359 students enrolled in the 2nd semester of AY 2005-2006 across all departments and in all year levels. The study likewise included a total enumeration of all the nine full-time and part-time college faculty of English.

In general, Letran Calamba college students received fair ratings in parts of speech, possessive nouns, and verb mood and tense. Areas of plural nouns, pronoun usage, adjective and adverb usage, and pronoun-antecedent agreement needed improvement. The students failed in the areas of sentence structure, subject- verb agreement, and sentence construction. Respondents perceived grammar as extremely important to the correct use of English. No significant relationship was established between the overall perceived importance of the study of grammar to the correct use of English and student’s overall grammar proficiency. There was also no significant difference between the faculty and students’ perception regarding the importance of grammar to the correct use of English. Moreover, grammar was found to be extremely important in writing and speaking as perceived both by faculty and students.

Research findings showed that grammar was relatively important in the development of identified English competencies among Letran Calamba college students. Hence, the school should consider making all freshmen students enroll in English 101 or Remedial English.

The Philippines is recognized globally as one of the largest English-speaking nations. The majority of its population has at least some degree of fluency in the language. Filipinos are exposed to the heavy usage of English, not just in school but also in their everyday lives. Exposing elementary pupils to different language learning sources (home, friends, school, and media) can help them acquire the language more easily. Thus, the second-language acquisition is a holistic process, which means acquiring the second language is not confined within the four walls of the classroom. This paper describes the extent of language learning exposure and the level of grammatical proficiency of Grade 6 pupils of a Catholic school in Bacolod City. Similarly, it explores the difference in the pupils' extent of language learning exposure and level of grammatical proficiency. Also, it determines the relationship between language learning exposure and grammatical proficiency.

Factors Affecting the English Proficiency of the Elementary Pupils at Central Philippine University

Profile image of Rezei Tadako

This study correlated the probable factors affecting English proficiency and the English proficiency of Grades V and VI pupils of Central Philippine University (CPU). It further examined the similarities and differences of the respondents according to the factors listed, and their association to the English proficiency of the pupils. Chi-square, Cramer’s V, and Gamma analyses were used to analyze data collected from 174 Grades V and VI pupils from the CPU Elementary Department who were subjected to a self-administered one shot-survey. The findings showed that female pupils are more proficient than male pupils, as shown in the results of the English proficiency test administered by the researchers. Reading frequency also bears on the English proficiency of the pupils. Other factors such as age, sex, income of parents, educational attainment of parents, study hours, perception, extent of television viewing, text messaging, extent of use of online social networks and computer games, and reading frequency.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are (re)shaping, (re)configuring, and (re)defining the landscape of teaching and learning across the globe. Anchored on TPACK (Koehler & Mishra, 2009) and Connectivism (Siemens, 2004), this study explored the pedagogical viability of integrating MOOCs into an English language classroom using the flex model of Horn and Staker’s (2014) Blended Learning Framework. Research participants were 39 senior students in a private university in Manila, Philippines, who were enrolled in a Business Communication class during the first semester of the academic year 2015 – 2016. Using Coursera (www.coursera.org) as the MOOC platform, the student participants took University of California Irvine’s MOOC on High-Impact Business Writing in conjunction with the face-to-face classes for a duration of five weeks. Research data from students’ reflections, survey, and focus group discussions reveal that MOOCs are viewed by students as an innovative, dynamic, and practical way of facilitating learning and enriching subject matter knowledge in today’s digital era. MOOCs are also seen by the students not only as a significant ‘add-on’ to the curriculum but also as a platform in promoting learner autonomy despite some technological limitations and attitudinal issues. Implications for teachers and researchers are provided in the light of these findings.

The concern for quality education has since been acknowledged as a tradition, a basic tenet subscribed to by the educational sector and the school system at all levels. The concept of quality is seen as a pursuit for academic excellence, a byword, a commitment that school colleges and universities uphold through a set of tools to assure quality and standards. It is quality that focuses on the students, and the teaching learning process that requires a high degree of resolve and flexibility. As it is, there is a continuing demand for quality in education that is equated with academic competence, a performance that can be at par with other graduates across countries because it offers the best opportunities for individual transformation and career growth. In the face of technological changes dramatically affecting school operations, education is now assessed in the light of students’ expectations of how well they can grow professionally and survives competition in the process. They have been critical of the kind of college degree that can pass the standards of quality learning adequate preparation and the sought after timeliness. It is in the perspective of continuous quality improvement that institutions, particularly the graduate schools have encouraged performance oriented investigations primarily aimed at identifying determinants of academic performance and acquiring knowledge of new and preferred teaching strategies that will bring out the best in the learners. While conditions and conventions within the environment are changing, researches have been conducted to pinpoint the factors that either impinge on the quality of educational outputs or contribute a high level of academic performance. There is therefore a felt need to anticipate implications of such to the institutions. At present there is a realignment of new educational requirements in support of the ambitious long-term goals of the Millennium Development that would bring about a renewed focus on academic excellence in all disciplines. With the emergence of knowledge societies there is an urgent call to include the school system and its components in particular, the faculty and students in the national priorities to achieve a competitive advantage. There have been innovations adapted in the area of instruction to prepare students for knowledge societies that will require learners to assess, adapt, and apply knowledge and in particular to access. For this reason, the benefits of computer assisted instruction have been studied. Moreover, others have focused on home factors, parental involvement, teaching styles, language proficiency and their implications on the level of academic performance. Along with these realities is the urgent call for educational institutions to do a rethinking of education that will provide the kind of instruction that offers valuable contributions in terms of educational experiences for improved academic performance.

To cite this study: Nicolas-Victorino, Anastacia (2011). "Factors affecting the national achievement test of selected second year high school students in Santa Maria, Bulacan." Unpublished Master's thesis, Open University of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Manila, Philippines. "This study determined the relationship of family and environment to the academic performance of second year students of high school in Santa Maria, Bulacan. The researcher wanted to know the factors that may affect the National Achievement Test performance of the respondents in terms of: technology, extra-curricular activities, media study habits, and motivational practices of the family. It is an attempt to find out if there are a significant relationship between the factors and the NAT performance of the respondents. The undertaking utilized triangulation approach, employing both quantitative and qualitative probes. Trough survey, the study dealt with the relationship of family and environment to the academic performance of second year students of Santa Maria public high schools in the National Achievement Test. It involves selected students of Catmon National High School, Parada High School, Santa Maria Agro-Industrial High School, and Pulong Buhangin High School. Technology, media, and study habits are said to have a direct causal relationship to the performance of the students in the National Achievement Test. It means that the more a value of the independent variable increase, the more it is likely to cause favorable results. On the other hand, there is an inverse causal relationship between the existing motivational practices of the students’ family. Based on the summary of findings, there has been a pattern on the preferences and the attitudes of the students of the four high schools in Santa Maria, Bulacan. Most of the students of these four public high schools are a picture of a typical medium-sized family from the lower to middle-lower income levels of the economic hierarchy. The participants schools did not perform well in the 2010-2011 National Achievement Test (NAT) for second year. Most of them are placed in the bottom half of the rankings. ""
