Student visa – study abroad over 90 days.

Students participating in study and study abroad programs D type Visa (more than 90 days) CLICK HERE FOR CURRENT VISA FEES

ALL APPOINTMENTS ARE IN PERSON AND MUST BE SCHEDULED no later than 7 days prior and not earlier than 6 months of the scheduled date of departure.

• 1.  Long term visa application form (National Long term D Visa)  for stays over 90 days – ( PLEASE FILL ELECTRONICALLY THEN PRINT IT )
• 2. One recent passport size photo (professionally taken, full front, white background).
• 3. Passport (valid at least 90 days beyond the intended stay in Italy) Original and photocopy of the main page .
• 4.  Photocopy  of student’s ID and  driver’s license  (or state ID).
• 5. Enrollment Letter in Italian filled out from the University in Italy  (not simply filled out by the American Institution but on their own letterhead) addressed to the Visa Office of the Italian Consulate in Boston, confirming the enrollment of the student,  program dates ,  duration , weekly hours of attendance (minimum 20 hours a week) and specifying the address of the student’s accommodation.
• 6. Enrollment Letter from the  University in United States , addressed to the Visa Office of the Italian Consulate in Boston, specifying that the student is officially enrolled with said University and confirming his/her enrollment in the University Study Abroad Program in Italy. The letter should also indicate the address of the University in Italy,  program dates and duration.
• 7. Students who have been granted a scholarship/financial aid are required to provide a letter from the University stating the amount and the date of disbursement.
• 8.  Proof of international health coverage for the entire duration of the program (Also including evacuation and repatriation). Insurances that offer only reimbursements will NOT be accepted. Alternatively an affidavit of insurance  can be submitted.
• 9. Applicant must provide the  last month of a personal US bank statement . Availability of funds must be at least 30$ per day for the entire duration of the program. Only in case of insufficient funds the household’s  last month  statement can be provided ( please see n.12 ).
• 10.  Money Order (type D Study) duly filled out and made to: Consulate General of Italy in Boston.
• 11.  Round trip flight from the U.S to the Italy and departure from Schengen area;
• 12. Affidavit of Support . In case of applicant’s insufficient funds, one or both parents must submit an affidavit of support along with their personal bank statement. The Affidavit must notarized by a Notary Public;
• 13. Optional: If you would like the passport/visa returned by mail you will need to provide a USPS pre-paid and preaddressed priority envelope with tracking . A written waiver   filled out and signed must also be provided. Please provide a copy of the envelope showing the tracking number. 

APPLICATIONS FOR MINORS  must be signed and presented by both parents; if one of the parents cannot be present he/she must fill out a  consent letter  which will need to be  notarized (or signed in front of the Visa Officer after identification) . An original copy of the birth certificate of the minor must also be presented. A declaration of responsibility must be filled out by a representative of the hosting School/University, the representative’s id is also needed. IMPORTANT:  Parents must also sign a declaration for the custody of the minor assigning such custody to the school representative while on school grounds and to another adult if sleeping off campus (can be the hosting family while not in school. Such declaration must be notarized. (or signed in front of the Visa Officer after identification) and a copy of both parents valid id (passports) must also be submitted.

A letter signed by the adult/s accepting the custody of the minor while in Italy must also be submitted (with copy of his/her id).

Visa Office has full authority to evaluate and request additional documentation, if deemed necessary, in addition to what particular visa.

How Much Does It Cost To Study In Italy?

Tuition fees to study in Italy will differ depending on the university and the course that you choose, so it’s essential to check with institutions individually to find out about costs.

Some undergraduate courses at public institutions are free , while others cost up to €5,000 (£4,358) per year , with the average working out at around €1,500 (£1,307) . Annual fees at private universities typically range from €3,000 (£2,615) to €35,000 (£30,504).

Students from the EU or European Economic Area ( EEA ) generally have to pay less for courses than Italian citizens at public universities.

Still, the costs may be higher for other international students, such as those from the UK.

How Much Bank Balance Do I Need For An Italian Student Visa?

Offer Letter/ Acceptance Letter provided by the accredited university.

Comprehensive CV outlining your academic achievements and relevant experiences.

Some institutions may require proof of language proficiency in Italian or English, depending on the language of instruction.

Two Coloured Photographs (3.3 cm Height and 3.5 cm Width) of the applicant with white background (80% face visibility).

Highest Degree or Diploma duly signed and stamped by the institution and certified by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (Apostils certificate).

Declaration of the Value form of the applicant if required by the university in Italy.

Passport Original + 2 Photostate.

Documents declaring/indicating that students possess sufficient means of subsistence (funds) like 12 Lakhs for those who are going for masters and 16 -18 Lakhs for those who are going for Bachelors. Make sure that funds should be a minimum of 1 month old.

Sponsor's Certificate (An affidavit of the Sponsor's Letter on 100 INR Stamp paper and duly notarised it).

6 months old bank account statement with 3 assessment year ITR of the applicant's sponsor duly signed and stamped by an authorised person of the bank. 

Show evidence of arranged accommodation in Italy, such as a rental contract or a letter from a host declaring that you will be staying with them.

Obtain a criminal record certificate from your home country or the country you have resided in for the past few years.

Prearranged accommodation for 1 Month. Proof of accommodation has to be presented even if the institution arranges it.

Confirmed Airplane ticket booking.

Travel Medical Insurance of a minimum of 30,000 Euros for at least one month.

Students enrolling in full Italian University Programs

You need to contact the school office of the Italian Consulate ( [email protected] ) to accomplish with all the requirements regulated by the M.I.U.R. (Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research) to enrol in a full Italian University program. Appointments for a visa can be requested only upon confirmation of the admission to the entrance exam at an Italian University.

Applicants should always appear in person. All documents must be printed out and presented in original plus a photocopy where required. Applicants must provide:

• Duly completed application form [ click here ];
• Valid passport or travel document with at least two blank pages, valid at least 3 months (original plus one photocopy). The passport will be kept and returned with the visa, if approved;
• Valid UK Residence Permit (original plus one photocopy);
• Passport-style photo, full front and white background and not older than 6 months;
• Cover letter;
• Duly completed and signed “Form A” downloaded from the following website:  https://www.studiare-in-italia.it/studentistranieri/
• Declaration of value (if applicable), issued by the School Office of the Italian Consulate/Embassy having jurisdiction over the University/ School that issued the certificate;
• if travelling by plane, train or bus the ticket must be printed directly from the airline/train line/bus operator, showing passenger’s name, dates, from/to;
• if travelling by car, ferry tickets or Eurotunnel tickets are required, alongside with car registration (original plus photocopy) car insurance (original plus photocopy) and driving licence If renting a car, the same documentation is required plus the car rental documents;
• if travelling to multiple Schengen countries, travel tickets between each country is mandatory;
• if using third parties services, such as travel agencies, note that they will be accepted only if based in the UK or in one of the Schengen countries. Travel tickets must always be issued from the airline/trainline/bus operator themselves and any other paper will not be taken into account. This applies to letter a), b), c);
• Proof of accommodation: rental agreement or at least 15/30 days of hotel reservation. In case the applicant is staying with friends/family, a letter of invitation is required [for a template  click here ] along with the host’s ID (valid permit of stay for non-European Union citizens) where the signature of the holder appears;
• Travel insurance, which must be issued in UK or in one of the Schengen countries, including every Schengen country and covering at the least the first 2 weeks of period of staying in Italy. Health insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 for emergency hospital and repatriation expenses. If your current insurance company does not provide such coverage, you are requested to find an international insurance. A special insurance policy for student with INA ASSITALIA is available through Universities upon arrival in Italy. If the insurance cover is not specified in the acceptance letter from the Italian university, a declaration in a form of “affidavit” (self-declaration) is required;
• Proof of financial means of support in Italy of no less than 500 euros per month. The availability can be proven through: personal last 3 months’ bank statement OR parents last 3 months’ UK bank statements alongside with original and 1 copy of birth certificate. Please, note:
• certificates issued by a foreign authority other than the UK, MUST be translated in English or Italian and legalised by the Italian Consular Office of the issuing Country OR by the Consular Authority in the UK of the issuing Country;
• certificates issued by one of the Schengen countries will be accepted only if multilingual, otherwise please refer to second note.

PLEASE NOTE

Citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and Travel Documents holders (with the three letters code XXA or XXB appearing in the ICAO) need to provide full names of mother and father and it must result from a birth certificate or Consular declaration.

Exchange and mobility programs

1) Application form duly filled up and signed. For short stay visas up to 90 days please download and fill up Schengen Visa application form [ click here ]. For long stay visas beyond 90 days please download and fill up Long term application form [ click here ];

2) Valid passport or travel document (original plus photocopy), valid at least 3 months beyond the return date of your trip from Italy and at least with two blank pages for

Schengen/Short term visa . Valid passport or travel document (original plus photocopy), valid at least 3 months and with at least with two blank pages for  National/Long term visa . The passport will be kept and returned with the visa, if approved;

3) Valid UK Residence Permit (original plus photocopy), valid at least 3 months beyond the return date of your trip in Italy for

Schengen/Short term visa . Valid UK Residence Permit (original plus photocopy) for  National/Long term visa ;

4) Passport-style photo, full front and white background and not older than 6 months;

5) Cover letter;

6) Original recent letter (not older than 1 month) of acceptance from University in Italy, specifying the type of course, number of weekly hours and dates;

7) Original recent letter (not older than 1 month) from University in UK confirming enrolment and applicant’s mobility program;

8) Round-trip travel ticket reservation for short-term Schengen Visa shorter than 90 days. One way travel tickets reservation for long-term National visa longer than 90 days. Please note:

• if travelling to multiple Schengen countries, travel tickets between each country is mandatory.

9) Proof of accommodation: hotel reservation that covers the entire period of staying for study trips shorter than 90 days; rental agreement or at least 15/30 days of hotel reservation for study programs longer than 90 days. In case the applicant is staying with friends/family, a letter of invitation is required [for a template  click here ] along with the host’s ID (valid permit of stay for non-European Union citizens) where the signature of the holder appears;

10) Travel insurance, which must be issued in UK or in one of the Schengen countries, including every Schengen country covering the entire period of staying in Italy for trips shorter than 90 days or at least the first 2 weeks of period of staying in Italy for trips longer than 90 days. Health insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 for emergency hospital and repatriation expenses. If your current insurance company does not provide such coverage, you are requested to find an international insurance. A special insurance policy for student with INA ASSITALIA is available through Universities upon arrival in Italy. If the insurance cover is not specified in the acceptance letter from the Italian university, a declaration in a form of “affidavit” (self-declaration) is required;

11) Proof of financial means of support in Italy as per  Ministry of Interior Directive 1.3.2000 . The availability can be proven through: personal last 3 months’ UK bank statements OR parents last 3 months’ bank statement alongside with original and 1 copy of birth certificate. Please, note:

• certificates issued by a foreign authority other than the UK, MUST be translated in English or Italian and legalised by the Italian Consular Office of the issuing Country OR by the Consular Authority in the UK of the issuing Country.

Students independently attending a course on Italian Language/Culture

6) Original recent letter (not older than 1 month) of acceptance from the host Institution/School in Italy, specifying the type of course, number of weekly hours and dates;

7) Transcript of previous studies in the applicant’s home country;

Internship program

6) Documentation concerning the internship program: Internship programs are organized by authorized entities (as per Art. 2 paragraph 1 of Decree of Ministry of Labor and Welfare N. 142 dated 03.25.1998) and are implemented according to a specific agreement between the promoting institution and the hosting employer. The visa can be requested by presenting a formal internship project (as per Art. 18 of Law N. 196/97 and Art. 4 of the D.M. N. 142/98) duly stamped by the competent Italian Region;

• If travelling by plane, train or bus the ticket must be printed directly from the airline/train line/bus operator, showing passenger’s name, dates, from/to, paid price.
• If travelling by car, ferry tickets or Eurotunnel tickets are required, alongside with car registration (original plus photocopy) car insurance (original plus photocopy) and driving licence If renting a car, the same documentation is required plus the car rental documents;
• If using third parties services, such as travel agencies, note that they will be accepted only if based in the UK or in one of the Schengen countries. Travel tickets must always be issued from the airline/trainline/bus operator themselves and any other paper will not be taken into account. This applies to letter a), b), c);

9) Proof of accommodation: hotel reservation that covers the entire period of staying for trips shorter than 90 days; rental agreement or at least 15/30 days of hotel reservation for training programs longer than 90 days. In case the applicant is staying with friends/family, a letter of invitation is required [for a template  click here ] along with the host’s ID (valid permit of stay for non-European Union citizens) where the signature of the holder appears;

11) Proof of financial means of support in Italy as per  Ministry of Interior Directive 1.3.2000 . The availability can be proven through: personal last 3 months’ UK bank statements OR parents last 3 months’ bank statement alongside with original and 1 copy of birth certificate (if issued outside the UK, it must be duly translated into English and certified either by the Embassy/High Commission/Consulate in London of the country that issued the certificate or translated into Italian and certified by the Italian Consulate in the country of issue). Please, note:

Professional training

1) Application form duly filled up and signed. For short stay visas up to 90 days please download and fill up Schengen Visa application form[ click here ]. For long stay visas beyond 90 days please download and fill up Long term application form [ click here ];

2) Valid passport or travel document (original plus photocopy), valid at least 3 months beyond the return date of your trip from Italy and at least with two blank pages for  Schengen/Short term visa .

Valid passport or travel document (original plus photocopy), valid at least 3 months and with at least with two blank pages for  National/Long term visa . The passport will be kept and returned with the visa, if approved;

3) Valid UK Residence Permit (original plus photocopy), valid at least 3 months beyond the return date of your trip in Italy for  Schengen/Short term visa . Valid UK Residence Permit (original plus photocopy) for  National/Long term visa ;

6) Enrolment letter to a professional training course, mentioning its duration, subject of the training program, credentials etc.). The course must be coherent with previous education organized by training entities authorized to perform professional training programs (as per Art. 142 paragraph 1, letter d, DL 112/1998 and Decree of the Ministry of Labour N. 166 dated 05.25.2001). The course cannot exceed the duration of 24 months and must aim to obtain a professional qualification or recognition of achieved skills. The training entity must declare in the enrolment letter that it has been accredited according to the above mentioned laws to carry out professional training courses;

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT, AT THE TIME OF YOUR APPOINTMENT, YOUR APPLICATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED UNLESS PRESENTED WITH ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTS. IF ALL THE ITEMS LISTED ABOVE ARE NOT PRESENTED, THE APPLICANT WILL HAVE TO RESCHEDULE A NEW APPOINTMENT.

Indian students interested in pursuing their Higher studies in Italy will have to follow the below mentioned mandatory steps:

1 . Apply for admission on the selected Higher Education Institution website within the deadline set by the same. Please note that each Institution has different requirements, deadlines and fees.

2 . Once admitted to the selected course, apply online for Pre-Enrollment on the UNIVERSITALY portal . Pre-Enrolment for academic year 2023/2024 is now open!

3 . Once pre-enrolled, apply for a D-VISA, in case the duration of your course exceeds 90 days, OR apply for a C-VISA in case the duration of your course is less than 90 days.

With effect from 14 th June 2023 and only prior appointment, all students wishing to pursue their higher studies in Italy can submit their visa application at one of the 5 following VFS centers: Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi and Hyderabad. Please be informed that all students will be required to attend a mandatory video interview upon submitting their visa application. In order to avoid any delays in the issuance of the visa, applicants are strongly recommended to submit the complete documentation required by the official study visa checklist, available here: Checklist STUDY VISA Mumbai 2023 .

All students are hereby informed that, according to the Italian law in force, the processing time of long-term visa applications (D type) can take up to 90 days from the day they are received by this Consulate General. Please note that in case the Consulate General requires the student to submit additional documents (through the so called “ advance notice for refusal” ), the overall processing time is likely to exceed 90 days.
