Graduate Degree Program in Ecology

College of business, resources page, department resources, faculty resources, student resources, travel and accounting resources, support resources, academic resources, graduate committee.

The purpose of a degree committee is to make available to the student a broad range of knowledge and expertise. The committee provides general advising to the student and assists in planning the major elements of the academic program. The committee also evaluates student progress throughout the graduate program. The committee may provide assessments at various stages and it administers the PhD preliminary and MS/PhD final examinations. The committee is not responsible for reminding students of published deadlines, nor for monitoring procedural details. The student needs to work with GDPE and their advisor and monitor Graduate School deadlines.

Students should begin discussing the formation of their graduate committee as early as possible. Formal selection of the graduate committee must occur before the student registers for their fourth regular semester, or the student will be prevented from registering by the Graduate School.

Along with the GDPE and advisor guidance, the following are specifically required of GDPE graduate Committees:

  • The primary advisor must be a member of the GDPE advising faculty and have advising privileges in a CSU academic department. Criteria for advising eligibility may vary among departments.
  • Co-advisors must also be GDPE faculty members.
  • All members of the committee must maintain a current appointment with CSU in order to serve as a voting member of the committee. Scientists without an appointment at CSU may contribute to a committee but are not allowed to be voting members.
  • The GDPE Director serves as an ex officio member of all graduate committees.
  • Graduate committees for MS students in GDPE consist of at least three members, two of whom must be on the GDPE faculty. Graduate committees of PhD students will have at least one additional GDPE faculty member, making a total of four faculty members on a PhD committee.
  • The outside committee person may or may not be a member of the GDPE faculty but must be from outside the department of the major advisor. The outside committee member represents the Graduate School, ensuring that CSU’s expectations are met and that the student’s needs are being met by GDPE. For these reasons, the outside member may not hold an affiliate or temporary appointment only. If the primary advisor holds a joint appointment in two departments, the outside member must represent a third department.
  • The student, major advisor, and other committee members collaborate to develop a program of study (logistically, this entails agreeing upon coursework and submitting a GS6 form) and together are responsible for monitoring the progress toward completion. Each graduate committee is also responsible for determining whether satisfactory progress is being made toward completion of the degree according to CSU and GDPE requirements.
  • GDPE students often would like scientists without a CSU appointment to be on their committees. Students should work with their advisor to gain affiliate status for the scientist in their advising department. Once the scientist has affiliate status in an advising department, they may apply for GDPE faculty affiliate status ( http://www.ecology.colostate.edu/faculty-affiliation.aspx ), which will allow them to serve on committees. Such applications must be approved by the GDPE Executive Committee, which meets approximately monthly during the academic year.

If you have questions about committee composition, contact the GDPE Assistant Director or the advisor.

Vanderbilt has begun work to establish a transformative college dedicated to computer science, AI, data science and related fields, university leaders announced today. In addition to meeting the growing demand for degrees in technological fields and advancing research in rapidly evolving, computing-related disciplines, the new, interdisciplinary college will collaborate with all of Vanderbilt’s schools and colleges to advance breakthrough discoveries and strengthen computing education through a “computing for all” approach.

The College of Connected Computing will be led by a new dean, who will report to Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs C. Cybele Raver and to School of Engineering Dean Krishnendu “Krish” Roy. The search for the college’s dean is scheduled to begin in late August, and recruiting of faculty will begin in the coming months. It will be the first new college at Vanderbilt since the university and the Blair School of Music merged in 1981.

“Of all the factors shaping society, few are more influential than the rapid emergence of advanced computing, AI and data science,” Chancellor Daniel Diermeier said. “To continue to carry out our mission, prepare all our students for their careers and advance research across the university, Vanderbilt must contribute even more to the study, understanding and innovative application of these fast-changing disciplines. Our aim is to make Vanderbilt a global leader in these fields, ensuring our continued academic excellence and capacity for world-changing innovation.”

“Our new college will enable us to build upon our strong programs and catapult Vanderbilt to the forefront of breakthrough discovery and innovation—in key areas of computer science and also in a wide range of other disciplines that capitalize on advanced computational methods. In launching this new college, we will provide students with highest-caliber educational opportunities at the intersection of these pathbreaking fields,” Raver said. “The creation of this college represents a tremendous win and will be transformative for our entire university community.”

Raver noted the ways that Vanderbilt is forging a bold and distinct strategic path to address burgeoning research and educational opportunities, including increasing demand for expertise in computing-related fields. Moreover, she said, the global interest in AI “aligns perfectly” with Vanderbilt’s leading work in that field. She said a dedicated college will enable Vanderbilt to keep making groundbreaking discoveries at the intersections of computing and other disciplines and will more effectively leverage advanced computing to address some of society’s most pressing challenges.

“The establishment of this interdisciplinary, ‘cross-cutting’ college is a watershed moment—not only for the School of Engineering, but also for the entire university,” Roy said. “The future of education, research and thinking in all disciplines is now inherently tied to, and will be greatly influenced by, the knowledge and power of computing. The idea of ‘computing for all’ is fundamental to the future of learning.”

Many of the specific details about the college—including its departments, degree programs and research infrastructure—will be informed by the recommendations of a task force on connected computing composed of faculty from across the university. In addition, Vice Provost for Research and Innovation Padma Raghavan will launch a Computing Catalyst working group that will engage faculty and staff leaders in computing from across campus and solicit their input on strategically expanding the university’s computing resources. “The decision to establish this new college is rooted in conversations with faculty,” Raver said. “We are continuing that faculty engagement with this working group, and we’re fortunate to have the advice of some of the best minds in these fields as we embark on this exciting journey.”

USF Health College of Nursing Launches New Hospice and Palliative Care Graduate Certificate Program for Nurses

  • March 25, 2024

Current News

In response to the increasing need for skilled professionals in end-of-life care, USF Health College of Nursing has launched a graduate certificate program in Hospice and Palliative Care. This program will equip registered nurses with the education, training, and clinical hours required to take the Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN®) exam.

The USF Health College of Nursing Hospice and Palliative Care Certificate is an online training program consisting of six courses taken over three semesters. Upon completion of the program, students will demonstrate proficiency in pain management, symptom assessment, interdisciplinary teamwork, and effective communication with patients and families in hospice and palliative care settings.

USF nurse treats elderly patient

“End-of-life care is a critical part of our practice as nurses,” said Usha Menon, PhD, RN, FAAN, FSBM, senior associate vice president of USF Health and dean of the College of Nursing. “We are dedicated to teaching nursing students how to provide compassionate and comprehensive care. This program enables us to equip both registered nurses and advanced practice nurses, with the skills to address an urgent growing healthcare need."

Florida has a growing population of older adults, leading to an increase in chronic illnesses that require nurses with specialized training to meet their unique needs.

“We are pleased to announce that applications will be accepted until August 1, 2024,” said associate professor and program director, Janet Roman, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, CHFN, ACHPN. “Patients have better outcomes when cared for by certified nurses, which is paramount.”

Certified hospice and palliative care nurses have increased competence and confidence in practice with sharpened skills and knowledge as well as personal pride in accomplishment. For more information on this certificate, click here.

Lindner's full-time and part-time MBA programs are uniquely designed to fit each student's specific needs and consists of 48 credit hours: 10 credit hours of foundation classes, 26 credit hours of core classes, and 12 credit hours of electives.

For recent graduates and those with relevant work experience, the 10 credit hours of foundation classes can be waived. The 12 credit hours of electives can be used to customize your MBA to fit your specific needs by earning one of our 20+ graduate certificates.

Enrich your MBA experience by participating in one of our immersive  study abroad  experiences, which are required for full-time cohort students, by visiting with your personal career coach, or by getting involved in one of the country's most dynamic business communities.

What MBA formats are available?

The UC Lindner College of Business MBA is available as a full-time, working professionals part-time, and a 100 percent online program . The full-time Lindner MBA is an accelerated one-year program. The part-time program can be completed in as few as 24 months.

Am I able to do a graduate certificate program in the MBA?

Students in the MBA program can use their electives to pursue a graduate certificate program. Students need to apply to their desired graduate certificate program after their admission and confirmation to the MBA program. Students will need to follow established deadlines for their certificate programs. For more information on graduate certificates, visit the graduate certificates home page .

Do I need work experience for the MBA program?

We recommend two years of work experience by the time you enter the MBA program. This may include co-op or internship experience.

In your application materials, ensure your resume clearly lists the dates of any professional (ex: full-time role, internships, co-ops), volunteer, non-profit or any other leadership experiences. There is no formatting requirement, however, please review your resume for any grammar mistakes. It should be no longer than two pages.

Are international students able to be considered for the MBA program?

Yes, international applicants are able to be considered for the full-time MBA cohort program. However, students seeking a visa are not eligible to apply for the working professionals part-time MBA or the 100% online version.

Is the MBA program STEM designated?

The MBA is not a STEM designated program.

When do classes begin?

Classes begin each fall, spring and summer semester. The University of Cincinnati  academic calendar  lists upcoming semester start dates.

Full-Time MBA Program

The University of Cincinnati’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program sets graduates up for success with an optional internship, specializations, career services.  Students can complete this program in as little as one year or 16 months with an internship.

We limit our full-time MBA class sizes so we can give each of our students the personalized attention they deserve. Students engage with the Cincinnati business community, working to find solutions to real-world problems for some of the world's leading companies. In fact, some of those companies, such as Procter & Gamble, Kroger, and Macy’s, are within three miles of campus.

Our students and world-renowned faculty play an integral part in creating in-depth classroom experiences. The UC MBA full-time curriculum consists of 36 to 48 semester hours.

With more than 20 optional specializations to choose from, there are classes for every career interest. These specializations include data analytics, entrepreneurship and health care administration.

At UC, we provide students with life-changing learning opportunities. That’s why full-time MBA students have the chance to study abroad in Chile for hands-on learning about business. Not only will you receive academic credit towards your degree, but you’ll improve your resume and increase your global business knowledge.

Earning an MBA is one of the most beneficial master’s degrees for job-seekers today. One benefit is improved career stability and mobility. Many management roles prefer candidates with an MBA over candidates who only have an undergraduate degree. Additionally, anyone looking to switch career fields can benefit from this program. Our graduates have worked everywhere from Fortune 500 companies to startups.

Graduates of our program earn an average starting salary of $106,000 and our Career Services team ensures that you aren’t alone when looking for employment post-graduation. We even provide students with personal career coaches for additional guidance during and after the program.

Part-Time MBA Program

The University of Cincinnati’s part-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) program provides a flexible option for students looking to advance their careers with a graduate degree. The Carl H. Lindner College of Business offers the expertise and hands-on experience you need to open doors and set your success in motion. This program consists of 36 to 48 semester hours and classes can be taken both in the evenings and on weekends.

As one of the top business schools in the U.S., our program develops leaders by bridging theoretical knowledge and practical, hands-on, real-life experience. In fact, many of today's most prosperous companies, like Unilever, SAP, and JC Penney, are run by C-level executives who are also Lindner graduates.

We keep our classes small to ensure a personalized education that feels fully immersive. Courses consist of a mix of core MBA classes, as well as foundational business classes. These MBA-specific courses include Marketing for Managers, Accounting for Managerial Decisions, and Decision Modeling.

In addition to our proven curriculum, we also offer study abroad opportunities for graduate students. Locations include Italy, Paris and Bordeaux, and Chile. Each offer their own concentrations such as Luxury Marketing, Managing Risk in a Complex Market, and International Management Consulting.

Our flexible program allows students to earn their degree without putting their lives on hold. MBA graduates from Lindner College of Business have been hired at Morgan Stanley, Goodyear, and Toyota, just to name a few.

It’s possible to complete this program in as few as two years. Classes in our part-time program are available in various formats and students have up to five years to finish. Part-time students take evening classes (6:00-9:50 p.m.), weekend blast classes and even have the opportunity to take some courses online.

Lindner boasts the number one ranked online public MBA program in the state of Ohio. Our online MBA offers the most flexibility of our program options, providing even the busiest professionals with the opportunity to earn an advanced degree.

MBA Joint Degrees

Students seeking joint degrees must apply and be admitted to each program separately. In order to satisfy the MBA degree requirements with only core MBA courses, students must either be admitted to the two programs simultaneously or must have applied (and been admitted) to the MBA program prior to completing the requirements of the other complementary graduate degree program.

Students can combine a non-business graduate degree with an MBA degree obtained either through our full-time day program or our part-time evening program and must specify which MBA program they are applying to.

In 1990, the College of Business and College-Conservatory of Music established a joint program leading to two degrees: Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Arts in Arts Administration (MAA). Students admitted to the joint program may earn both degrees in two years, only one quarter longer than is required to earn the MAA by itself.

The program enables students to work on MBA and MAA coursework simultaneously. The majority of the MBA coursework will be taken in the evening with part-time MBA students. Two Arts Administration Summer Internships will be completed in the summers after the first and second years of study. The joint program is available only to full-time students.

For additional information about this program, visit the College-Conservatory of Music website .

In 1981, the College of Business and the College of Law of the University of Cincinnati established a joint program leading to the degrees of Master of Business (MBA) and Juris Doctor (JD). Students admitted to these full-time programs may earn both degrees concurrently in approximately four years.

The program is designed for the student to spend the first year in the College of Law and the second year in the College of Business. The joint program is available only to students pursuing degrees on a full-time basis.

For more information, visit the College of Law website .

This program, started in 1999, has been designed for highly qualified students who wish to complement standard medical training with a greater understanding of the economics, finance, marketing and management of the health care system. The program has been created with the recognition that there have been tremendous changes on the business side of the healthcare industry. As a graduate, you will enjoy expanded career options including management positions in major healthcare organizations.

Offered in conjunction with UC's nationally recognized College of Medicine, this program is open to full-time students only, lasts 12 months and allows students to obtain an MBA in time to start residency.

For more information, visit the College of Medicine website .

UC reduces the gender gap in IT

Progress made in efforts to reach younger students, make field more welcoming.

headshot of Kyle Shaner

Corin Manning was only 14 years old when she discovered what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

She and a friend signed up for a summer camp, IndeedWeCode, which teaches coding or computer programming to young Black girls in Cleveland, Ohio. Manning , now a senior at the University of Cincinnati, fell in love with coding and web development that summer and now is on the verge of starting her career in Cleveland with the industrial automation company Rockwell Automation.

Manning's experience is similar to initiatives from UC's School of Information Technology, such as its Early IT Program and Early IT Summer Camp , as it focuses on reducing the gender gap in information technology.

“It's super important to make sure you get to people early,” Manning said. “I can take it all the way back to elementary school. My mom had me in a bunch of different STEM camps since I was young. It was already kind of embedded in me. I knew I wanted to do STEM, I just didn't know what path, and the IndeedWeCode camp solidified it.”

UC makes strides

When Bekah Michael , an associate professor-educator in the School of Information Technology, part of the university’s College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, and the executive staff director for the Ohio Cyber Range Institute , began her studies in IT, she was often the only woman in her classes.

She loved her classmates and never felt discriminated against by her classmates because of her gender, but it was obvious that she was different.

“I noticed that there weren’t very many women,” she said. “It took me a while but [I] realized the field was not diverse at all, which was so crazy because it felt so accepting to me.

“This is such an exceptional field,” she said. “You can make so much money, there was so much flexibility, and women just weren’t getting in. There are many reasons why this was the case, and we continue to study it and work to remove barriers and build a more inclusive community. This is why I came back to UC to study and teach after being in industry for many years.”

Narrowing gender gap

Women studying IT still find themselves underrepresented in their classes, but the gap is narrowing at UC.

  • In fall 2023, there were 679 women in UC’s School of Information Technology (28% of the total student body).
  • In fall 2023, 41% of the school’s graduate students were women (512).
  • The number of first-time first-year women enrolled in the SoIT grew by 161% from fall 2019 to fall 2023.
  • Enrollment of women in the cybersecurity Bachelor of Science Degree program grew by 31% from fall 2022 to fall 2023.
  • The number of women on the school’s IT faculty increased by 60% from fall 2019 to fall 2023.

“It’s an amazing thing for our students that women are represented in our department,” Michael said. “Other underrepresented groups are represented in our department and school. That’s a part of what we need to support our students. Our students need to see all of us at the front of the classroom so they don’t feel alone.

“I talk to people at national conferences all the time about our makeup, and they are just blown away. That is not their experience.”

Building a positive culture

As Jen Fritz , an associate professor-educator in the school sees it, there's nothing about IT that prevents women from entering the field other than the perception that it's a male-dominated industry.

“There’s nothing in this field that a woman can’t do,” Fritz said. “In IT, it’s just as easy for women to be competent in the field as men.

“It’s not the field that’s keeping women out. It’s how comfortable they are in the environment.”

When Fritz began her studies in information systems in the 1990s after retiring from the Marine Corps, it wasn't uncommon to see nude women appear on screensavers in computer labs. While that was accepted then, the technology sector has become more welcoming to women in the years since, Fritz said.

Still, there's progress to be made.

Breanna King, a senior from Cincinnati, encountered people who questioned her knowledge and didn't give her credit for her ideas during a work experience. That led her to believe the hostility she faced was a result of her gender.

“The negative experiences that I've had with it have caused me to stray from the ability to have those experiences, to not really share my opinion as much and caused me to second-guess myself a lot,” King said. “It doesn't happen every day. It doesn't happen more often than not. It's just when they do occur, it kind of sticks with you a little bit more than the positive ones sadly.”

While that negative environment sullied her experience, King did find a better culture during a co-op with the Department of Justice (DOJ).

With the DOJ, King felt supported as both a woman and a person with disabilities who uses a wheelchair, cane or leg braces for her mobility issues. She also found a culture of people who wanted to learn and find solutions to the problems they faced.

“It's nice being able to get that experience on the ground,” said King, who has accepted a data analyst job with the DOJ. “I don't think I would have been able to understand that aspect of it outside of a co-op.”

Overcoming negative perceptions

To overcome the perceptions of IT that sometimes make women feel unwelcome, faculty and students at UC have created support systems.

Organizations including Women in CyberSecurity cater to female students. The clubs provide a safe place for students to share their successes and failures, practice technical and nontechnical skills and build their professional networks.

Other programs and organizations including Cyber@UC, Bearcat Coders and IT Proud also provide spaces where students can support each other, and they receive support from faculty, too.

“They're very supportive. You can go to them at any time, even if you're not their student that semester. It feels nice to have them there,” said Manning, who works as a student success coach for the IT program to show fellow students the same support she's received at UC.

Not only do they want to help their fellow students at UC, the organizations also have reached out to younger students as well.

“I've been able to talk to girls who are in high school and even girls who are in middle school who are interested in this field already. When we went to the library, there were two girls there who were in Girl Scouts together. One of my opening questions was, ‘Has anyone heard of steganography?’” King said, referencing the practice of concealing a file, message, image or video within another file, message, image or video. “And two little girls raised their hands, they were no older than maybe fifth or sixth grade, and they were able to tell me all about it. I think the resources have helped that gap a lot.”

Highlighting the opportunities

To reduce the gender gap in technology fields, it's important to show women and girls that opportunities exist, professor Fritz said.

“We can’t just go out and say, ‘IT is for anyone. Let’s see how many women or how many minorities we can get into the field,’” she said. “That doesn’t solve our problem. That doesn’t make it more equitably distributed. What we need is word of mouth and personal experience: ‘My sister did this, now I’m doing it.’ And we’ve seen that.”

To increase that personal experience, UC has created programs such as the Early IT Program and Early IT Summer Camp.

The Early IT Summer Camp is a free program that allows high school students to explore numerous career opportunities available through information technology including in cybersecurity, software development, game development and simulation and data and cloud technologies.

The Early IT Program allows high school students to complete the first year of their bachelor’s degrees at more than 50 high schools. With training from UC, high school teachers are enabled to teach the college courses at their schools.

All students who complete their first year of Early IT classes in high school with a C or above average are automatically admitted to the UC information technology program.

“At UC, IT is becoming a lot more accessible because we have things like Early IT,” Nikki Holden , an instructor-educator in the school, said. “We’re getting more people in IT who wouldn’t have gravitated toward IT 10, 15 years ago.”

Students, including King and Manning, also have taken advantage of the IT Accelerated Program that allows students to complete bachelor’s and master’s degrees simultaneously in five years. Manning is earning a bachelor’s degree in IT and a Master of Business Administration Degree while King is earning a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity and master’s degree in IT.

Through the efforts to reach younger students, UC faculty hope their efforts will make more underrepresented students feel comfortable in IT and that students from all backgrounds will become interested in the field.

“Students need to have someone who looks like them teaching. Regardless of what the class is or the level, they need to have someone they associate with, so having women teaching makes women feel more comfortable in the classroom,” Fritz said. “But when I teach, I don’t look at a person as male or female, minority or anything else. I look at them as students. I try to treat them all equally.”
