When I was in fourth grade, I decided to join the school orchestra. I found it exceedingly difficult at first. No matter how hard I tried, I never could seem to place my fingers correctly on the fingerboard. Every sound I made mimicked a screeching cat. But I decided not to give up. I practiced every day after school and on the weekends. By the time I was in ninth grade, I had made it into my high school’s top orchestra.

Is that a lovely story? Yes, absolutely. Is it hearty enough for a college essay? No. While it tells a good narrative of growth and progress, it remains on the surface of the writer’s life. It comes across as a convenient way to brag about your strengths instead of exploring them in a genuine way. In this example, the story also focuses on events that happened way too far in the past.

A song that changed your life

This approach is by far the most common cliche in college essays about music. We’ve all been there: a favorite song that transports you to a moment in your life whenever you hear it. It makes sense that you’d want to write about yours.

But there’s a problem with this approach. Too often, it reads as trite or unoriginal, and the end result usually doesn’t say much about the writer. And when it does, the message an admissions officer gets doesn’t typically give them any more reason to admit you. No one can even imagine our life without music. For centuries it was an integral part of our everyday life, our traditions and culture. Listening to the charming sounds of nature, man could not help trying to reproduce it in order to enjoy music at any time. That was the reason for the first primitive musical instruments to appear. Since that time music and mankind were never torn apart. With the development of the society the instruments and the whole music changed. The mankind and music were always at the same stage of development. Starting with the mysterious melodies of the ancient cults and ending with the energetic military marches. Music follows humanity step by step, working its magic on it, showing its power. The ability of music to influence human consciousness was known from the earliest stages of development of the society.

Relaxing and calming at the beginning, it can become energetic and aggressive just in a moment, causing great changes in your mood. “Without even thinking about it, we use music to create desired moods- to make us happy, to enjoy movement and dance, to energize, to bring back powerful memories, to help us relax and focus. Talking about my life it is impossible not to mention music. It is a huge part of my everyday routine. My day starts and ends with it. Early in the morning it is quite vital for me to listen to a portion of a good energetic music in order to get up and have a charge for a long day. But it is not enough of course. Like a real melomaniac, I always take my player with me. I have noticed the great growth of my productivity if I do something with music in background. The type of chosen music depends on the type of the job I have to do. If there is some kind of a physical activity I need some fast and energetic music. However, when some sort of mental activity is demanded, I need some calm, not very loud music playing somewhere in the background. This is by no means a panacea for everyone who wants to raise their productivity , but I cannot imagine me working without music

Having come home late at evening, it is just necessary for me to listen to another portion of music in order to relax and forget about all the stresses of the outside world. I even go to bed with the headphones in my ears, listening to my special “good night” song.

Taking into account the fact that I am a great admirer of rock music, it is not difficult to guess that all my friends are great admirers of it to. I am more than sure that common tastes in music are the good basis for friendly relations. This is not only the question of having something to discuss or to listen to together. If a person has the same preferences in music that means that he has something in common with your inner world and with your soul. Of course, there is that type of music that you will never listen with your friends. It is that kind of music which affects the deepest parts of your soul and you can only listen to it while keeping to yourself. At that moments no one is allowed to trouble you.

Music also has a great impact on the way we communicate within our company. The excessive tension or some miscommunication in relations can be easily dispersed by means of music. The sounds of the familiar song cool heads and return friendly atmosphere.

There is one more aspect of music which is worth mentioning. It is its lyrics. Being not less ancient part of our culture than music, the word has even more influence on peoples hearts and minds. The combination of such powerful remedies gives a marvelous results. This combination of sounds and words affects all your senses, penetrating deep inside your soul. Looking through the lyrics of my favorite songs, I can say that the text is of the same importance as music in the song. While listening to it for the first time you pay special attention to lyrics, especially if it resonates with your mood. The song runs in your head and you repeat it over and over, enjoining the harmony of the words and your soul.

The most common topic for all songs is, of course, relations of any kind. It is the basis of human life and music, as an integral part of it, cannot stand off. Love and hatred, faith and betrayal, and all others shades of human feelings are praised in thousands of songs. The mans attempts to find his reason to live should also be mentioned. The great number of songs is devoted to that problem, making people think or helping them to find an answer. One of my favorite songs “ The Show Must Go On ” by Queen (Queen 1990) is also one of the best compositions touching the problem of self-determination. While listening to it you cannot but feel the great suffering of a man who realizes the duality of his inner world and necessity of playing the annoying part. The Freddie Mercurys heart cry makes the great effect on the listener, making you think about your own place in the world, the way you live and spend your lifetime and reconsider your values and priorities.

The love theme is also one of the especially beloved by lyrics authors. Everyone on this planet has its own favorite love song and I am not an exception. The great song “ Not Strong Enough ” by Apocalyptica (Warren 2010) tells us about the pangs of the love-crossed man who cannot be with his darling. The most dramatic moments of the lyrics are wonderfully emphasized by music, the most powerful beats comes with the most bitter worlds, projecting the singers and the authors mood on you, making you feel the same. That great interplay of words and music makes you shiver. Especially strong effect is achieved if the song correlates with your mood or life experience. In that case the song becomes a some kind of an anchor, which evokes certain memories and feelings connected with a certain life period. No matter where you are and what your feel, from the first beats of the song you will remember the first time you have listened to it and your emotions at that moment.

The love theme is a part of a bigger theme of gender relations, which is also quite popular in music. According to the generally accepted tradition there is some stereotypical pattern of behavior for both genders which is praised in the songs. Historically, man always strives for womens love, trying to overcome all the obstacles on his way. He fights the injustice, erases the boundaries of social or race segregation just to reunite with his beloved one. Music is a reflection of the mans thoughts that is why all this issues are blended in it, The artists want to share their feelings and experience with us, to warn and protect from the mistakes they made, to show that all the prejudices are only in our heads and we have to overcome it.

Summing it up, we should say that music is not just part of our lives, it is something bigger, and that determines our mood and emotions. It helps us to forget everything and enjoy one of the greatest gifts of nature – the sound.

Importance of music in my life

Music is one of the most important and powerful things in my life. My life without melodies and harmonies would be totally empty. Listening to and playing different tunes helps me to de-stress, relax and it can also help to motivate me in trying times. I love listening to music while on my way to school, as I feel it helps me to prepare for the day that waits. I think it is like the memoirs to my life as it has been there throughout everything with me. When I was younger, I didn’t have the great love for musical as I do now. I mainly listened to whatever was playing in the background or what my parents were listening to. I didn’t have much of a care for musical compositions. There was sometimes a little bit of pop music thrown in to the mix here and there, but that’s really all I liked back then. Whether I was in the car, the house, or anywhere else there was sure to be some Beatles, Buddy Holly, or the Dubliners constantly playing somewhere in the background. At the time I didn’t care for that genre of music much, but now as I’m older, I enjoy it as it allows me to reminisce on memories from times of my childhood. Once I hit my teenage years music became my life and gradually started to inhibit my soul. I believe music has the ability to convey all sorts of emotion. Whether the emotion is joy and happiness or sadness and despair through rhythms, harmonies and the lyrics music shows it. The song “A little bit longer” by Nick Jonas is such an emotional and inspiring song that when I hear it, I always come close to tears, especially when I watch it being played live. The effect that music can have on our emotions is tremendous, as it can bring people to floods of tears or bursts of laughter. The musical images that music and song are able to create are amazing. Music has the ability to transport me back in time just like a time machine. It lets me revisit lost and forgotten moments in life. Songs can paint a picture, for example in classical and country music where a story is being told. The music in classical music tells a story without lyrics which is an immensely powerful thing. I feel that this applies to the saying “music imitates life and life imitates music”. Recently song writing has wandered its way into my life. I believe there is no better way to express myself than through song. After a bad day, it’s nice to be able to sit down and write about it. It can make all your problems just disappear and float away. Listening to other musical artists that I like gives me inspiration. My guitar teacher also points me in the right direction and gives me guidance as I need it. I love to just sit with my guitar and make up random lyrics about past experiences or what I’m going through at the moment. I started learning how to play the guitar last year and within the past few months I have fallen completely and utterly in love with it. Once I start playing, I find it extremely hard to put the guitar down again. It’s very addictive and can also be distracting sometimes. It distracts me from my homework since my guitar sits right next to my desk. Playing guitar is one of the only things in my life in which I don’t feel pressurized to do well in. I think this is because I have a great teacher and she doesn’t push me to the music exams. This past summer my grandma taught me how to play the piano. I had always heard stories about how my great grandfather, her father, was brilliant at the piano. He would sit at the piano for hours on end playing different well known songs as making up his own little tunes. He had taught my grandma how to play and I felt it was about time that I learnt. So when I was staying with my grandma and grandpa during the summer, I asked her to teach me. She was delighted to and now it’s something nice that we can both do together and bond over. I believe music effects people in many different ways. To me music is more than just something to listen to or play, it’s something to feel. Music is extremely important in my life. I think it brings me closer to my friends and family. I also feel that it helps me to get through things. For example, I remember doing the twenty six kilometre gaisce hike and the whole way along the hike we sang songs. Music is an immensely powerful thing and has a huge place in my life right next to my heart.

In the mornings, we listen to the birds chirping and the leaves of plants and trees rustling, and even this is like music to our ears. Music is everywhere, and all you have to do is open up your ears to hear it.

Those who know how to create music using instruments and their own bodies are called musicians. There are different kinds of instruments – percussion, string, brass, woodwind and piano/keyboard. Percussion instruments include drums, bongos, the triangle, tambourine, tabla, dholak, etc. and they are the ones responsible for giving the main beat to a song. String instruments include the harp, guitar, cello, violin, etc. and they give rhythm to the music.

Brass instruments refer to those that you have to play with your mouth, such as the trombone, trumpet, the French horn, etc. In these instruments, you blow air into the instruments to create vibrations. Woodwind instruments follow a similar concept using air/wind, except that these instruments are made of wood and the sound profile is higher pitched than brass, for example, the flute. The piano/keyboard consists of a set of keys that have a range of pitches.

When musicians put one or more of these sounds together in harmony, it creates what we know as music. However, that’s not all to it; music can be even one of those instruments, such as the strumming of a guitar, a melodious tune on the piano, a catchy beat on the bongos, etc. When you add another voice to an instrument, it is called singing and is a vital part of the music. When people who play different instruments come together to play them together, it is called a band.

There are many different genres of music, too, such as rock, pop, classical, blues, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, etc. All of these genres of music are characterized by how the instruments work together. For example, rock music is often louder and has more pronounced percussion and string instruments, while jazz is a genre where the saxophone is very prevalent. In today’s world, we see a lot of combinations of genres such as pop-rock, classical rock, etc. One of the newest genres of music is electronic dance music (EDM) which consists of loud percussive beats and is very popular to young people.

They say that music is a universal language, meaning that you don’t necessarily need to understand the words in a song to enjoy the music. In this way, music connects people all over the world with its universal language. I love listening to music especially because of this reason. Music has the power to unite people, make us feel at peace, make us feel understood; it is something to dance to, bond over, and even listen to when alone. Music is not just sound, it is its own language and it communicates so much; it is a beautiful thing.

I was upset my friend was getting married. Then I toppled her wedding cake

“Where does the cake go?” I asked a bow-tied bartender, my voice tight and panicked. I was in my best cocktail dress and heels, trying to keep my grip on a box roughly the size, and weight, of a bear cub.

I’d been late getting ready, late picking up the cake, and now I was late to my friend Stephanie’s wedding . I’d missed the ceremony completely and it was already cocktail hour. I just wanted to get the cake through the crowd and onto the dessert table before the bride noticed.

The bartender pointed me toward the reception tent on the other side of the winery. As I shuffled forward, I grumbled to myself: Why did I have to volunteer to transport the cake? Why, I wondered, was I going to this wedding at all?

Stephanie was my next-door neighbor. Her getting married meant she and her 4-year-old daughter were moving, which meant both my toddler and I were losing our best, and closest, friends. Of course, I knew I was supposed to be happy for Stephanie, who’d finally found true love. And on the outside, I was. I smiled, I celebrated, and I put on heels. But on the inside, I was drooping like a day-old bouquet.

When I eventually placed the box on the dessert table, I sighed with relief. I even gave a wink and two thumbs up to a waiter, who was putting out the last of the silverware. Finally, my task was complete. Maybe now I could find a glass of wine and try to enjoy myself.

But my joy turned to horror when I opened the box and found the cake, a two-tier confection with white buttercream frosting, decorated with greenery, was almost completely horizontal: smushed up against the side of its cardboard box.

I stood, frozen, staring at the cake. Frosting was everywhere, sections of yellow cake popping out. I had the scary thought that somehow, subconsciously, I might have done this on purpose.

It all started when Stephanie began dating her husband-to-be.

She and I sat on my front patio, sharing a bottle of wine and a cheese plate my husband had prepared for us. Our toddlers were taking turns going down a plastic slide.

“There’s just something about him,” my friend said. “I can see myself with him. I think he’s the one.”

I congratulated her, poured more wine, and assured her that her new boyfriend seemed like a great catch. I was genuinely happy for her.

As the months passed, when we’d chat over our garden wall or meet for toddler playdates, Stephanie would mention marriage more and more. I was excited, asking when she thought he was going to propose. I always told her how fun married life could be and was looking forward to watching her be a bride. But eventually, she started mentioning the new home she and her bigger family would need. He wanted more space than her two-bedroom townhome and she wanted a place where they could start fresh together. “Neither his place nor my place — our place,” she told me.

I hated the idea.

Ever since I’d moved into the neighborhood two years before, Stephanie and I had been fast friends. I could always depend on her if I needed a last-minute babysitter and she could always count on me to bring over pizza and dessert on days she had to work late. Whenever one of us unexpectedly ran out of baby wipes, the other was always ready to pass a package over the garden wall.

It meant so much to have a mom friend next door, especially when I felt unsure of my skills as a parent. Stephanie had a teenager as well, so as the more experienced parent, she’d give me valuable advice and introduce me to the best local toddler activities and classes. When I complained about a hard parenting day, she commiserated. It always made me feel better. She was one of the first people I told after I found out I was pregnant with my second, and there were many days when she came over to hold my newborn so I could shower or take a nap.

One day, Stephanie texted me a picture of an engagement ring. “He proposed! I can’t believe it,” she wrote.

I couldn’t believe it either, or maybe I didn’t want to.

After that, things moved fast. Wedding plans were made, a date was set, and soon, Stephanie started packing. Her fiancé had found them a beautiful home in the next city over.

I started dreading the wedding. Stephanie’s friendship had meant so much to me. Without her next door, I didn’t know what I’d do.

On the day of Stephanie’s wedding, I woke up feeling off. I was distracted, thinking about a close friend who had moved out of state in middle school and another friend who had transferred out of our college. People say they’ll keep in touch, but it’s always hard.

I stomped around all morning as I got ready, got the kids dressed and finally picked up the cake. It wasn’t until later that day, when I opened the cake box and found the frosting covering the inside of the box, that I finally snapped out of my mood.

My friend’s wedding cake was splattered like a pie in a “Looney Tunes” cartoon. And it was all my fault.

Had I tilted it too much while walking through the venue? Did the air conditioning not reach my car’s hatchback, causing the cake to simply melt onto itself? I wasn’t sure.

I stood there, frustrated, sad and on the verge of tears. I’d missed my friend’s wedding ceremony, missed her finally saying “I do,” and now I was ruining the reception, delivering a mess of a cake. Stephanie had been there for me, supported and encouraged me often over the last two years, and I’d let her down on her big day. I wanted to step away from the table, get to my car and drive away as fast as I could. But I knew I had to, somehow, try to fix this.

The guests were still at cocktail hour, which meant Stephanie was busy taking photos on the other side of the venue. But I knew I was quickly running out of time.

I gently pulled the cake up and out of the box, letting the top half rest on my forearm as I kept the two layers somewhat together. When a waiter walked by, I shouted, “Get me a knife!” like a surgeon in a medical drama. He handed me a myriad of utensils and I got to work, trying to push the cake right-side up and level the frosting. Another woman, who I later learned was the caterer, offered a pitcher of water. “A wet knife will work better,” she said. She dipped a knife in the water and covered a patch of exposed cake with ease. “Don’t worry, I’ve seen a lot worse,” she said before getting back to preparing the buffet food.

I was grateful for help from this apparent frosting whisperer, but from the smell of rosemary chicken she was now uncovering, I knew I was running out of time.

Now on my own, and with seconds to finish, I tried my best to smooth the final sections. I even stole greenery from the table centerpieces to cover the hopeless sections. In the end, I had frosting on my hands, on my dress and in my hair, and the cake still leaned slightly to one side — but I thought it looked OK. Almost normal.

When the first wedding guests started arriving at the reception tent, I took that as my cue to head to cocktail hour and find my husband and kids. Together, we walked to our table.

As we mixed in with the other guests, chatted with some of Stephanie’s other friends and eventually found our table, I kind of felt like that cake. I’d been a droopy mess before, but now I felt pieced together and ready for a party.

Sure, I was losing a great neighbor, but at the same time, there was so much to be thankful for, so much to celebrate. Of course I wanted to be there. I wanted to stand tall and celebrate my friend.

In the end, everyone seemed to enjoy the cake, even though it was a little off. When I took a break from dancing to get a slice, it was already gone.

I saw Stephanie outside the next morning. She was on her way to the airport, ready for her honeymoon. When I apologized for the cake, she just laughed and said it wasn’t a big deal. Still, I found myself apologizing again and again. I knew I was sorry about more than just the cake. “When you get back, let me know how I can help you finish packing,” I said, giving her a big hug.

In the past six months since Stephanie moved, I have to admit, we’ve only seen each other a handful of times. Maybe she and I will figure out how to keep in touch better than I have with other friends who have moved. Maybe we won’t. But I’m so lucky I had Stephanie for a next-door neighbor when I did. Now, we might not be as physically close, but I hope we’re friends for a long time.

And while Stephanie said the cake wasn’t a big deal, I still feel bad. Every so often, I wonder about my first thought when I first opened the box, if I really did wreck it on purpose. But the more I think about it, the more I’m sure it was an accident. Things happen: Cakes fall, we run late, friends move. We just have to try to do our best and, when we’re down, hope someone will help build us back up and smooth the edges.

A Dog’s-Eye View

A new furry family member encourages writer Sal Vaglica to hit the trails, providing a fresh, four-legged perspective of the great outdoors.

When the conversation at home turned to getting our then nine-year-old daughter, Keira, a puppy, I wasn’t exactly enthusiastic. At the time, I was commuting four hours a day from Miller Place on Long Island to my office in Lower Manhattan, getting home well after dinner, and didn’t feel like forfeiting what little energy I had left to replacing puppy potty pads. But, I reasoned, having a dog would mean routine walks, and maybe that would be the linchpin to getting our whole family outside more often.

As my wife, Erica, and I looked into the attributes we wanted in a dog, like size, demeanor, and, maybe most important of all, low shedability, a labradoodle checked all the boxes. We brought Chloe home and, not long after, my commute went from four hours to four minutes, as I started working remotely. With more time for walks together, it wasn’t long before Chloe could handle a few miles around town, even on days when deadlines loomed (walking the dog, as any writer will tell you, is a highly effective form of procrastination). My daily walks with Chloe became family ones on weekends, which evolved into off-road hikes.

For all of her kvetching, Keira would usually ask for one of our smartphones to snap photos of the landscapes: a lighthouse here, white caps on the Atlantic Ocean there, or a delicate cairn. As time passed, spending hours out exploring even became part of our Chloe-free vacations, be it on wooded trails in the Adirondacks or along the rugged Maine coast.

Slowly, an appreciation of landscapes that didn’t look like home, spaces that instantly made you feel tiny, became important to Keira. I saw it on her face as we gazed across the craggy peaks of Grand Teton National Park and while we took in the awe-inspiring scale of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. On the flight back, Keira thanked us for that trip, but I knew much of the credit belonged with the fluffy dog back home, eagerly awaiting our next walk together.

Q&A: John Legend on his ambitious children’s album, ‘My Favorite Dream,’ and new single, ‘L-O-V-E’

NEW YORK (AP) — Twenty years on from the release of his debut album, the career making “Get Lifted,” John Legend is entering uncharted territory.

On Aug. 30, the R&B-pop singer will release his first-ever children’s album titled “My Favorite Dream,” via Republic Records: Kids & Family. Produced by the chamber pop polymath Sufjan Stevens, the record is lush, and centers on universal themes like love, safety, family and dreams across nine original tracks, two covers, a solo piano track and three bonus covers of Fisher-Price songs.

Legend, who is a father of four with wife Chrissy Teigen — Luna is 8 , Miles is 6 , Esti and Wren are both toddlers — made it a point to write songs that worked for adults, too. Some will even resonate with those who might not have children. These are soulful, capital-J John Legend songs with poignant messaging.

“I wanted the parents to like it,” he told The Associated Press over the phone. “I wanted the same standard of like quality and musicianship that I would want on any of my records.”

The album needed to stand on its own.

“To be able to craft a children’s album with as much depth and artistry, while finding the unique balance of making it bright and warm for little ones, is a true skill,” said Republic Records: Kids & Family senior vice president Bree Bowles. “There is an authenticity to the work which makes you feel part of his world and family.”

This interview, in which Legend discusses “My Favorite Dream,” its lead single “L-O-V-E,” and the role his family played in the creative process, has been edited for clarity and brevity.

AP: Why children’s music, and why now?

LEGEND: I’m in the thick of parenting, and we have some small kids — two kids under 2 right now, and then our older kids as well. And, you know, music is such an important part of our lives. And music is such an important part of the way we interact with each other.

It all started when I was just playing a version of one of the songs that is on a Fisher-Price play mat: The song called “Maybe,” that a lot of parents of toddlers know very well. I was learning how to play it on the piano so I could sing it to Esti, one of our babies, and Chrissy recorded me learning the song and singing it to Esti on the piano. She posted it to her Instagram. And all my fans were like, “John, you got to do more children’s songs. You got to cover all the Fisher-Price songs.” And so, a lot of people were asking me to record some children’s music. And I kind of took it as a challenge, not to just cover some songs kids already knew and loved, but to try to create something new. So, I wrote nine new original songs and made a whole album of it. And it was fun, just thinking about all the messages that we tell our kids and the things I want to sing to them.

AP: Does it require a different skillset, writing family music?

LEGEND: Well, it’s interesting because I’ve been writing for Broadway lately, too, and I feel like in some ways it kind of tapped into a similar skill set. It took me out of my own self, a little bit, and allowed me to approach the music a little differently than I would for a normal John Legend album. But also, the difference between this and Broadway — and the thing that makes it more like a regular John Legend album — is that I really thought about my own life, my own communication with my kids, the messages that I like to give them, and then I put that in song.

AP: Sufjan Stevens produced the album, and it is heard throughout — there are many songs on here that directly recall his signature whimsy, a kind of baroque songwriting style.

LEGEND: He’s singing a lot of backup, and he’s such a genius. I have been a fan of his for like 20 years. When I was writing these songs, my first thought of who I wanted to produce this was Sufjan, because I love how dreamy he can make music, and how whimsical, and how much character he has to everything that he makes. And I just felt like it would be the perfect energy for a children’s album: To blend my songwriting with his production and arranging and playing. You just hear his influence all over the album and I love it.

I was so happy he said yes because you never know if someone’s gonna want to make a children’s album with you, and we had never worked together. We had never even met before we started working on this.

AP: The first single, “L-O-V-E,” features your wife and two of your children, Luna and Miles. How did that come to be?

LEGEND: I’m so excited to have them on the track. We had them come down to the studio and sing it with us, and that’s very cool.

Chrissy is on “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” the cover I did of that for the Christmas project and Luna is talking on that track. This is the first time that Luna and Miles have sung on anything. I love this song because it really sums up, like, who I am, my philosophy on life, and what we try to teach our kids about just being a light in the world and letting love guide you and inform the way you treat other people and the way you think about the world. Really, it informs my politics, my philanthropy, my music, everything I do — I think about how to spread love and to look at the world with love and empathy and seeing each other’s humanity. And that’s really what this song is all about.

AP: How did your kids inspire the album?

LEGEND: My kids do a music class. My toddlers, they do a music class with other toddlers. They play little shakers and teachers come and sing with them and play guitar. I wanted the first half of the album to feel kind of like that music class, more upbeat, a big singalong. And then the second half should be sleepy time. So that’s kind of the layout of the album. The first half is more fun and upbeat and like the music class the kids do. And then the second half is more like what you would play if you were trying to get them to calm down for the night.

AP: The album is mostly originals, except for two covers: Bob Marley & the Wailers’ “Three Little Birds” and “You Are My Sunshine,” excluding the bonus tracks. Why those songs?

LEGEND: I was just thinking a lot about different covers... and I wanted to make sure that whatever I covered, I could do a version that was different than other people’s versions. And these were two that I really settled on.

Of course, I’ve known Bob Marley’s music for a long time, and I thought that song went with the spirit of the first half of the album. A lot of those songs are kind of encouraging the kids to find the bright side in life, when you feel sad to connect with what makes you happy, with the people you love and all those things. “Three Little Birds” captures that energy in the right way.

And then “You Are My Sunshine” is, in some ways, a sad song because it’s about how you really value someone, but also how much you miss them when they’re not there. And I think that we feel that with our family a lot. I think most families feel that: How much you care about them and love them, and also how much you miss them when they’re not around.

AP: What do you hope listeners get out of this project?

LEGEND: I want them to feel the love that I put into it, and I want them to be able to translate that love to their own families and loved ones. I think the messages of the album are ones that we like to share with our kids, and I have a feeling that a lot of parents are going to want to share them with their kids too, and that’ll make me happy if they’re able to do that.

Twenty-two years ago, Norah Jones blasted into superstardom at age 23 with the release of her instant-smash debut, “Come Away With Me.” An easygoing blend of jazz, folk, pop and country, the LP sold 4 million copies in its first 12 months and spun off an adult-contemporary radio staple in the ballad “Don’t Know Why”; in early 2003, Jones’ music won Grammy Awards for album, record and song of the year while she was named best new artist.

Since then, Jones has used her talent and her curiosity — not to mention the resources she enjoys as one of the last success stories of the CD era — to pursue all kinds of projects, including collaborations with Willie Nelson , Danger Mouse and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong ; a scrappy country trio called Puss N Boots; a podcast in which she jams with friends like Dave Grohl and Mavis Staples ; even a foray into acting with her role in Wong Kar-wai’s 2007 film “My Blueberry Nights.”

Yet her latest offering is her most interesting in years: “Visions,” a funky, gently psychedelic garage-soul record that puts her sultry vocals amid fuzzy guitars, off-kilter drums and crinkly vintage keyboards. Jones, now 44, made the album, due Friday, with producer Leon Michels, known for his work as a member of the late Sharon Jones ’ band, the Dap-Kings.

“In the beginning it was pretty ratty-sounding,” Michels said of the recording process. “I was thinking to myself, OK, cool, eventually we’ll call in players and do really clean versions, which we tried a couple of times.” He laughed. “Every time, Norah was like, ‘This is not better.’ So a lot of the songs that made the record are just our demos.”

Jones, who grew up in Texas — her father was the famous sitar player Ravi Shankar , who died in 2012 — lives in New York with her husband, musician Pete Remm, and their 9-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter. She spoke about “Visions” at her manager’s office in Los Angeles the day after the Super Bowl (which turns out to be a good time to shoot a music video on the Santa Monica Pier). “I’m not really into sports,” she said, “but me and my friend just hung out in my hotel room and watched the halftime show. It was fun.”

I’m not sure you’d be a natural Super Bowl halftime act. Probably not.

But what’s the closest you’ve gotten to that kind of high-pressure performance? Maybe the Grammys? I used to get offered the national anthem a lot early on. I never did do it. And then at a certain point, I was like, I should have done it. That would have been an experience.

Why did you say no? At the time there was a lot going on in the world — it was the early 2000s — and I didn’t feel super-patriotic. But I wasn’t trying to make a political statement by not doing it.

Your song “ My Dear Country ,” about George W. Bush’s reelection, gets at that ambivalence. I’m not a black-and-white person. That song is expressing a complex feeling of loving something but questioning it. This country is so beautiful in so many ways. But I think at the time I was really becoming aware of things in a way that I never had before.

There’s a line in which you sing, “Who knows, maybe he’s not deranged.” These days your audience would assume you’re talking about Donald Trump. When I did the song during the last election, that line — it played. But I think it always feels appropriate because we’re always like, what the f— is going on? I almost don’t want to sing it anymore because it’s too sad to feel that way.

This new album slightly reframes your singing and songwriting. It’s rawer than I’d grown accustomed to thinking about your music. A lot of people have an image of me being kind of smooth. But I’ve always made records this way — “Don’t Know Why” was one take with a live band. I just have a smooth voice. I’m not saying I haven’t loosened up a little. That’s probably true. But I’ve never polished things. If anything, I’ve tried to rough it up because I know I sound smooth, and I always wanted to be more like Ray Charles. I think it’s just that Leon and I had such so much fun playing together. I remember kind of sweating and breathing hard when we were done with each song, like back in high school. It’s that raw feeling of: Oh, my God — music!

Leon produced your Christmas album from 2021, which was your first holiday record. I’m surprised some record exec didn’t push you to make one much earlier. That would assume that I just do everything commercially.

Had you actively said no to a Christmas album? I don’t remember that happening. But I never wanted to do something cheesy. Whether you think my early records were cheesy or not, I wasn’t trying to get into that — I was trying to lean away from that as much as possible.

You like Christmas music? I love Christmas music. I remember listening to Christmas music in April during the pandemic. It snowed in New York that first month. We made pancakes and put on Christmas records, and we thought we were doing real good. When I look back, I realize how bad it was. We did an extra year of Zoom school just to be safe — worst decision I’ve ever made.

What was on your mind when you were writing the songs on “Visions”? They talk about home and solitude but also about yearning for freedom. I’m not sure. I don’t really know until things are out that I was feeling a certain way. I was just mom-ing around, you know? Same juggle as always: working, hanging with the kids, figuring out after-school activities.

Do you carve out time from your home life to write songs? I’ve never been good at that. I’m more likely to pick up a melody that’s bouncing around my brain and record it real quick so I don’t forget it. Of course, there’s no time when your mind can be quiet because there’s always somebody asking a question. So it really happens in the bathtub when the door’s locked. A lot of my voice memos have the bath running in the background.

You’re pro-bath. There’s a really beautiful Sylvia Plath [line] about how a hot bath can fix just about everything. I’m on board with that notion.

Do you drink? I like some wine with dinner. I drank a lot in my 20s, and I’m definitely happy to not drink as much as I used to. Boy, we closed down the bars in New York City back in the day. I hope my kids don’t drink that much. But I don’t think that generation is gonna be into it.

Doesn’t seem so. They don’t even want to have sex. I think it’s the phones.

You smoke weed? I’ve always wanted to be a stoner, but it just doesn’t take. I keep thinking I’m going to eventually, and I’ve had periods where I was stoned for like a week.

If you were stoned for a week, I think it did take. But I never continued it. If I had the most perfectly curated thing, which you can get now, then maybe? But with kids you don’t want a bunch of gummies laying around.

The Grammys just happened. When Billie Eilish swept the show in 2020, I wonder if you felt like you could relate. Little bit. She was a lot younger than I was, but what I related to was how embarrassed she felt. Some of these young women go up there and they’re very confident — they’re like, “I deserve this.” And I love that. But that’s not how I responded to it.

There’s a “60 Minutes” profile from a few years after your big Grammys night where you say you’d gotten your fill of fame. You still feel like that? Honestly, I sometimes wish I’d enjoyed it a little more. I get a little nostalgic for that stuff. But I don’t have any regrets. And the fact that I can live a kind of normal life and still put out albums and go out on tour all summer — that’s pretty cool.

What did you think of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” on this year’s Grammys? I was stoked to see her — made me want to cry.

Lots of people had that reaction. Have you thought about why? I think people were moved for many reasons. One of my best friends started crying because we have a friend who killed herself in college, and she used to sing that song all the time. You have to remember that you can’t just analyze the collective consciousness. Everybody has their own attachments to music that are personal to them. That’s why I never want to tell people what my music is about.

Because you want to allow room for their own lives in your songs? It’s also none of their damn business [ Laughs ].

Joni Mitchell performed at the Grammys too. I love her. I think for older musicians it’s important to play music. My dad played till he was 92, and then he died. I think if he’d tried to not play or stopped playing, he would’ve probably faded earlier. Check out Willie: I sat in with him a few months ago [at New York’s Forest Hills Stadium]. I was a big fan of his sister Bobbie [who died in 2022], and they’ve been using another keyboard player who was on another gig that night. So [harmonica player] Mickey [Raphael] asked if I wanted to come play in the keyboard seat all night, and it was the funnest thing in the world because Willie’s just having fun.

That’s how Joni has seemed in these comeback shows she’s been doing. Maybe that’s the only reason she’s doing it. Maybe it was the way to get her rehabbed from her aneurysm. Maybe in that place, you might be ready to let go, but if somebody gives you a goal to work towards, you’re like, well, I can try to do that. And then it becomes your whole new life.

Are you a reader of musical biographies? Not really. I did just buy Barbra Streisand’s book. I thought it would be interesting.

You ever meet her? I met her once. I said the dumbest thing — I think I’d had a martini. It was after the Oscars [in 2013]. She’d performed and I’d performed, and I said, “You sounded beautiful.” She said, “Really? Thank you. I was really nervous.” And then I said, “Oh, that nervous thing where your voice gets shaky? I didn’t hear that at all.” She was so sweet, but to myself I was like, What am I saying? Shut up, Jones! This is Barbra .

"My Way," an iconic song originally released by American singing legend Frank Sinatra, was a song rearranged for Sinatra based on the French song "Comme d’habitude," which was originally performed by French singer Claude Francois in 1967.

Although the music is the same, the lyrics for the two songs are different. Francois' song focuses on the loss of love in a relationship, whereas Sinatra's "My Way" follows a man looking back on his life with little regret.

Who is Yseult?

Yseult first earned fame in France for being the runner-up in the tenth season of "Nouvelle Star," the French version of "American Idol," in 2014.

Since then, she has released four studio albums and remains popular in her home country.
