It first began in Chicago as a protest campaign to support an 8-hour workday for workers.
In more than 80 counties of the world that also includes India, we celebrate it as a holiday.
In addition, it has its origin in the labour union movement in the United States of America in the 19th Century. At that time, industrialists used to exploit the labour class and made them work up to 15 hours a day.

To sum it up, we celebrate Labour Day all around the world to recognize the efforts of millions of labours and helpers. They make our work easy and work tirelessly to contribute a little to society. So, on this day we thank all the workers around the world for their efforts and hard work.

What Is Labor Day? A History of the Workers’ Holiday.

President Grover Cleveland made it a national holiday in 1894, during a crisis over federal efforts to end a strike by railroad workers.

In the late 1800s, many Americans toiled 12 hours a day, seven days a week, often in physically demanding, low-paying jobs. Children worked too, on farms and in factories and mines. Conditions were often harsh and unsafe.

It was in this context that American workers held the first Labor Day parade, marching from New York’s City Hall to a giant picnic at an uptown park on Sept. 5, 1882.

“Working Men on Parade,” read The New York Times’s headline . The article, which appeared on the last page, reported that 10,000 people marched “in an orderly and pleasant manner,” far fewer than the organizers had predicted would attend. The workers included cigarmakers, dressmakers, printers, shoemakers, bricklayers and other tradespeople.

Because it wasn’t yet an official holiday, many of the attendees risked their jobs by participating in the one-day strike. On their signs, they called for “Less Work and More Pay,” an eight-hour workday and a prohibition on the use of convict labor. They were met with cheers.

The American labor movement was among the strongest in the world at the time, and in the years that followed, municipalities and states adopted legislation to recognize Labor Day. New York did so in 1887, and The Times reported that that year’s parade was larger than ever, even amid political tension over the role of socialist groups. Parks, shops and bars in the city were full.

“The barrooms were never more resplendent,” The Times wrote . “Liquidly, the first legal celebration of Labor Day may go down to history as an unqualified success.”

But it took several more years for the federal government to make it a national holiday — when it served a greater political purpose. In the summer of 1894, the Pullman strike severely disrupted rail traffic in the Midwest, and the federal government used an injunction and federal troops to break the strike.

It had started when the Pullman Palace Car Company lowered wages without lowering rents in the company town, also called Pullman. (It’s now part of Chicago.)

When angry workers complained, the owner, George Pullman, had them fired. They decided to strike, and other workers for the American Railway Union, led by the firebrand activist Eugene V. Debs, joined the action. They refused to handle Pullman cars, bringing freight and passenger traffic to a halt around Chicago. Tens of thousands of workers walked off the job, wildcat strikes broke out, and angry crowds were met with live fire from the authorities.

During the crisis, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill into law on June 28, 1894, declaring Labor Day a national holiday. Some historians say he was afraid of losing the support of working-class voters.

“There were many political advantages at that moment to provide recognition for Labor Day,” said Joshua B. Freeman , a distinguished professor of history at Queens College and the City University of New York Graduate Center.

But it wasn’t the only workingman’s holiday on the table. Starting in 1884, the labor movement had called for strikes and protests on May 1 to push for an eight-hour workday. That would-be holiday was called May Day, and it’s now celebrated around the world , though it’s not officially recognized in the United States.

You might blame the Haymarket affair. On May 4, 1886, a bomb went off at a demonstration in Chicago’s Haymarket Square in support of an eight-hour workday and against police killings of protesters. The authorities opened fire in response, and seven officers and four protesters were killed.

The episode made headlines around the world, and the police response in Chicago was fierce. “The Anarchists Cowed,” read the headline on a front-page Times article on May 8, with a subtitle, “Forced to Seek Hiding Places — The Disorderly Element Thoroughly Frightened.” Eight anarchists were convicted, and four were hanged. Critics argued the trial was conducted poorly, and seven years later, Gov. John P. Altgeld pardoned the three who were still alive.

In the years that followed, May Day became an occasion for protesting the arrests of socialists, anarchists and unionists. As it became associated with the radical left — and as Labor Day was recognized by more and more states — the latter came to be the dominant holiday in the United States.

In recent decades, Labor Day has been dominated more by barbecues , sales and last-chance beach days than strident labor protests. The labor movement has weakened, and in New York, there are scheduling conflicts, such as out-of-town vacations and the large West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn, which generally includes a sizable labor contingent .

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of a picture caption with this article misstated the year that Labor Day was made a national holiday. It was 1894, not 1984.

May Day or Labour Day is known by many names such as ‘Kamgar din’ or ‘Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas’ in Hindi, ‘Uzhaopalar Naal’ in Tamil and ‘Kamgar Diwas’ in Marathi.

We commemorate this day every year to recognise accomplishments and to inspire employees.

On the international level, it is observed as a working-class holiday.

India's first Labor Day was observed in the province of Madras (now Chennai) in 1923.

The first group to arrange May Day festivities in India was the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan.

It started as a protest movement in Chicago in favour of an 8-hour workweek for employees.

We observe it as a holiday in more than 80 countries around the world, including India.

It also has roots in the 19th-century labour union movement in the United States of America. Industrialists at the time used to abuse the labour class by forcing them to work up to 15 hours every day.

It helps to spread knowledge among the labourers regarding their rights.

It also makes the citizens aware of the labour’s hard work so that they don’t abuse them by forcing them to work more than 8 hours.

Good morning everyone, my name is Riya and I am a student at Auxilium Convent. Today, I stand before you to pay tribute to a group of people who often go unnoticed, but who play a critical role in the functioning of our society - the workers.

Labour Day is a day to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of the working class, and to remember the sacrifices made by those who fought for better working conditions and fair wages. It is a day to celebrate the backbone of our society, the unsung heroes who work hard every day to make our world a better place.

We often take for granted the services and products that are provided to us by workers. From the roads we drive on, to the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, all of these things are made possible by the hard work of workers. They are the ones who work long hours, face challenging conditions and put their health and safety on the line, all for the benefit of our communities.

But Labour Day is about more than just celebrating workers. It is about recognising their inherent dignity and worth, and ensuring that they are treated with respect and fairness. It is about ensuring that workers have safe working conditions, fair wages, and the right to form unions to protect their interests. Let us commit ourselves to making the world a better place for all workers.

Good morning everyone, and a warm welcome to our celebration of Labor Day at Auxilium Convent School. My name is Indrita, and it is my honor to stand before you today, as a proud student of this great institution, to deliver a speech on this important occasion.

Labour Day is a day to recognise and celebrate the contributions of all workers, regardless of their profession or industry. It is a day to reflect on the importance of work, and to pay tribute to the men and women who make our society and economy function, every day.

In today's society, it is all too common for individuals to overlook the crucial role that each and every worker plays in the very fabric of our communities. It is easy to take for granted the seemingly small, yet critical contributions of workers in every sector of our society. However, the reality is that every worker, regardless of their profession, is crucial to the successful operation of our society.

Farmers, for example, are the backbone of our food production system. They work tirelessly to grow the crops that feed our families and sustain our communities. These hardworking individuals often labour in gruelling conditions, facing weather extremes and working long hours to provide us with the sustenance we need to survive. Without them, we would not have the fresh, wholesome food that we so often take for granted.

Similarly, teachers are integral to the development and education of our children. They shape the minds of the next generation, imparting wisdom and knowledge that will stay with our children for a lifetime. They provide a safe and nurturing environment for our children to learn, grow and develop, both academically and emotionally. Teachers play a crucial role in ensuring the future of our society, by equipping our children with the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in life.

But this is not just about acknowledging the importance of work. It is also about recognising the human dignity of all workers, and ensuring that they are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. Whether they work in an office or a factory, in the public sector or the private sector, every worker has the right to safe working conditions, fair pay, and equal opportunities.

Unfortunately, not all workers in our society enjoy these basic rights and protections. From exploitation and abuse, to long hours and low pay, to inadequate health and safety regulations, there are still many challenges that workers face, even in our modern world. And it is up to us, as responsible citizens and members of society, to fight for the rights and dignity of all workers, and to ensure that they are treated fairly and justly.

So, on this Labor Day, let us remember the importance of work, and the contributions of all workers to our society. Let us celebrate the human dignity of every worker, and recognize their essential role in our world. And let us redouble our efforts to fight for the rights and protections of all workers, and to create a more just and equal society for all.

A very good morning to everyone present here. On this auspicious day today, I am going to speak on Labour Day which is also known as the International Workers Day which is celebrated on the first day of May each year.

It is a matter of great honour for me to have been chosen to deliver the speech in front of my esteemed teachers and my loving friends and classmates. I humbly request your attention and beg your pardon for any mistakes that will be made if at all. Please feel free to correct me wherever I am wrong. I am open to suggestions.

Before I speak on this topic of labour day, it would be unjust for me if I do not explain to you all about the history behind this day. For millions of workers around the world, 1 st May is their day. In the late 19th century, American labour unions were fed up as they were doing over work in dangerous conditions and with little pay.

As a result of this in the year 1884, the Federation of organized trade and Labour unions made in Chicago and kept certain demands one of which was an 8-hour workday.

Eventually on 1st of May 1886, more than 300000 American workers went on strike. 3 days later they organized in a Marketplace to protest and while protesting a riot broke out between the workers and the police men.

That it so blatantly oppressed the people that it could clearly be observed in the way the police reacted that day throwing live bombs at the protesting ground in broad daylight.

Several people died in this bomb blast. Since the entire incident took place in Haymarket square, it is remembered today as the Haymarket Massacre. Since that day, 1 st of May is known as the international workers day or the international labour day.

Many countries however have different labour days of their own with different history behind the day. In India the labour day celebrated on 1st of May and it is usually a public holiday.

All-important institutions including schools, colleges and government offices are closed on that day in order to commemorate the contribution of the workers in our society.

Liberty is usually celebrated in order to acknowledge the importance of the lower grade working class syllabus of our society who do not have a white-collar job. These are usually the people who are looked down upon by the society and are frowned upon by everyone everywhere.

This is not fair. First of all, the problem is in the formation of human society and human psychology plays a very important role here. The social communities formed by human beings extremely class based and hierarchical.

In this scenario of extreme stereotyping, it is very obvious that the workers and laborers I looked as people belonging to lower strata of the society.

However, is it really so? Do these people deserve to be frowned upon? The answer is an absolute no. These people who are mostly the working class are extremely essential workforce in the development of a progressive society. No matter how big plans we sketch up in our minds and on pen and paper it is these workers who turn our thoughts into reality.

Let me explain this thing to you with the help of a rather humorous incident. In the year 1962, the president of United States John F Kennedy, once visited the NASA space Research Centre. While his tour of the entire premises of the place, he came across a janitor, with a Broom in his hand walking past him. He asked him what was he doing over there.

And the janitor promptly replied that he was helping put a man on the moon. This might seem to be just a very insignificant incident but it reveals a lot about the importance of workers specially the working-class laborer’s in our daily lives.

The most people the janitor was just a person cleaning the place, however if you look it from a broader perspective we will find that he was also responsible, no matter how small his role was, for putting Neil Armstrong on the moon. There’s a great Life lesson that we can learn from this incident.

No matter how big or small a person’s role of job is, he is always a crucial part of the entire system. Without him the system can fail.

The situation is similar to a deck of cards when arranged on top of another to form a castle. No matter how a card is placed or where it is placed it shatters even by a little movement of any card destroying the entire structure.

Labor Day is set to celebrate the hard work and achievements of the working class. It is celebrated on different dates in different countries. However, in most countries, the date of May 1 is fixed for this day, on which International Workers’ Day is celebrated.

Origin of Labor Day

In the earlier days the condition of the workers was very bad. He had to work hard and work for 15 hours a day. They had to suffer injuries and other terrible problems at their workplace. Despite their hard work, they were paid low wages. Due to the increasing number of health problems of these people due to long working hours and lack of good sources, labor unions raised their voice against this system to fix this problem.

Agitated trade unions were formed which briefly fought for their rights. After this the number of 8 hours of work was fixed for laborers and working class people. It is also known as the Eight Hour Movement. According to this a person should work for only eight hours. He should get eight hours for entertainment and eight hours for rest. Labor Day has its origin in this movement.

Although the history and origin of Labor Day is different in different countries, the main reason behind it is the same and it is the unfair treatment of the working class. It was quite unfortunate that a section of people who contributed immensely towards the country’s infrastructural development was treated poorly. There were many movements against it in different parts of the world and this day came into existence.

The labor class is actually a class that needs to be involved in various laborious tasks. A special day is definitely necessary to appreciate their contribution towards the society and to know their identity.

Labor Day was first celebrated in India on 1 May 1923. The festival was organized by the Bharatiya Shramik Kisan Party of Hindustan in Madras. On this day Com Singarvelier held two meetings at different places in the state. One of these was held at Trollikalan Beach and the other was arranged on the beach near the Madras High Court. He passed a resolution saying that the government should declare a national holiday on this day.

During the late 19th century, United States trade unions suggested a special day to mark the contribution of the working class to society.

The increasing exploitation of the labor class in the United States led to the joining of the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labour. Together they led the first parade which marked a significant movement against industrialists who were exploiting workers by paying them low wages and forcing them to work long hours. For the first time the parade was held in New York City. Workers from various organizations participated to join the cause. Their demands were eventually heard.

In 1887, Labor Day was first celebrated as a public holiday in Oregon. By 1894, 30 states in the United States celebrated Labor Day. This day is celebrated to honor the American labor movement.

Alternatively it is said that it was Peter J McGuire of the Federation of Labor who first suggested that a special day should be dedicated to workers. He proposed this in May 1882 after observing the annual Labor Festival in Toronto, Ontario Canada.

Like Canada, Labor Day in the United States is celebrated every year on the first Monday of September.

International Labour Day- May 1

International Labour Day also known as May Day is being observed the world over. The working classes in many countries have found new ways of expressing their anguish and joys. May Day commonly sees organized street demonstrations by hundreds of thousands of working people and their labour unions throughout the world.

Though May Day is celebrated in various countries on may dates and in many contexts, the most popular May Day celebration is International Workers’ Day, and is called Labour Day. It was especially significant in the Soviet Union and other Communist countries when the May Day parade of armoured tanks, rockets, and military personnel saluting the nations’ leaders, has been much – publicized feature.

It is the commemoration of the social and economic achievements of the labour movement. The date May 1 st is used because in 1884 the Federation of Organized Trades and Labour Union demanded an eight – hour workday in the United States, to come in effect as of May 1 1886. This resulted in the general strike and the U.S. Haymarket Riot of 1886, and eventually the official sanction of the eight – hour workday was accepted.

Though the International Worker’s Day is an international holiday in many countries around the world, the English- speaking countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom are not celebrating it as others do.

History of Labour Day

In the lat nineteenth century, the working class was in constant struggle to gain the 8 – hour work day. Working conditions were server and it was quite common to work 10 to 16 hour a day in unsafe conditions. As early as the 1860’s working people agitated to shorten the workday without a cut in pay, but it wasn’t until the late 1880’s that organized labor was able to garner enough strength to declare the 8 hour workday. This proclamation was without consent of employers, yet demanded by many of the working class.

At this time, socialism was a new and attractive idea to working people , many of whom were drawn to its ideology of working class control over the production and distribution of all goods and services. Workers had seen first- hand that Capitalism benefitted only their bosses, trading workers’ lives, for profit. Thousands of men, women and children were dying needlessly every year in the workplace, with life expectancy as low as their early twenties in some industries, and little hope but death of rising out of their destitution.

At its national convention in Chicago, held in 1884, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labour Unions (FOTLU – which later became the American Federation of Labor ) , proclaimed that “eight hours shall constitute a legal day’s labor from and after May 1, 1886.” The following year, the FOTLU, backed by many Knights of Labour locals, reiterated their proclamation stating that it would be supported by strikes and demonstrations. A first, most radicals and anarchists regarded this demand as too reformist, failing to strike “at the root of the evil.” A year before the Haymarket Massacre, Samuel fielded pointed out in the anarchist newspaper, The Alarm, that “ whether a man works eight hours a day or ten hours a day, he is still a salve.”

Despite the misgivings of many of the anarchists, an estimated quarter million workers of the Trades and labor Assembly, the Socialistic Labor party and local Knights of Labor in the Chicago area became directly involved in the crusade to implement the eight hour work day. As more and more of the workforce mobilized against the employers, these radicals conceded to fight for the 8 hour day, realizing that “ the tide of opinion and determination of most wage- workers was set in this direction.” With the involvement of the anarchists, there seemed to be an infusion of greater issues than the 8 hour day. There grew a sense of a greater social revolution beyond more immediate gains of shortened hours, but a drastic change in the economic structure of capitalism.

In a proclamation printed just before May 1, 1886, one publisher appealed to working people with this plea:

Working men to arms.

War to the Palace, peace to the Cottage, and Death to LUXURIOS IDLENESS.

The wage system is the only cause of the world’s misery. It is supported by the rich classes, and to destroy it, they must be either made to work or DIE.

Not surprisingly the entire city was prepared for mass bloodshed, reminiscent of the railroad strike a decade earlier when police and soldiers gunned down hundreds of striking workers. On May 1,1886, more than three lakh workers in thirteen thousands businesses across the United states walked off their jobs in the first May Day celebration in history.

The name of many – Albert Parsons, Johann Most, August Spies and Louis Lingg- became household words in Chicago and throughout the country. parades, bands and tens of thousands of demonstrators in the streets exemplified the workers’ strength and unity, yet didn’t become violent as the newspapers and authorities predicated.

More and more workers continued to walk off their jobs until the numbers swelled to nearly one lakh, yet peace prevailed. It was not until two days later, May 3, 1886, that violence broke out at the McCormick Reaper Works between police and strikers.

For six months, armed Pinkerton agents and the police harassed and beat locked-out steelworkers as they picketed. Most of these workers belonged to the “anarchist- dominated” Metal Workers’ Union. During a speech near the McCormick plant , some two hundred demonstrators joined the steelworkers on the picket line, beatings with police clubs escalated into rock throwing by the strikers and the police responded with gunfire. At least two strikers were killed and an unknown number were wounded.

Full of range, a public meeting was called by some of the anarchists for the following day in Haymarket Square to discuss the police brutality. Due to bad weather and short notice, only about 3000 of the tens of thousands of people showed up from the day before. This affair included families with children and the mayor of Chicago himself. Later, the mayor would testify that the crowd remained calm, and orderly and that speaker August Spies made “no suggestion…. For immediate use of force or violence toward any person…”

As the speech wound down, two detectives rushed to the main body of police, reporting that a speaker was using inflammatory language, inciting the police to march on the speakers’ wagon. As the police began to disperse the already thinning crows, a bomb was thrown into the police ranks. No one knows who threw the bomb, but speculations varied form blaming any one of the anarchists, to an agent provocateur working for the police.

Enraged, the police fired into the crowd. The exact number of civilians killed or wounded was never determined, but an estimated seven or eight civilians died, and up to forty were wounded. One officer died immediately and another seven died in the following weeks. Later evidence indicated that only one of the police deaths could be attributed to the bomb and that all the other police fatalities had or could have had been due to their own indiscriminate gun fire. Aside from the bomb thrower, who was never identified, it was the police, not the anarchists, who perpetrated the violence.

Eight anarchists- Albert Parsons, August Spies, Samuel Fielden, Oscar Neebe, Michael Schwab, George Engel, Adolph Fischer and Louis Lingg- were arrested and convicted of murder, though only three were even present at Haymarket and those three were in full view of all when the bombing occurred. The jury in their trial was comprised of business leaders in a gross mockery of justice similar to the Sacco- Vanzetti case thirty years later, or the trials of AIM and Black Panther members in the seventies. The entire world watched as these eight organizers were convicted , not for their actions, of which all were innocent, but for their political and social beliefs. On November 11, 1887, after many failed appeals, Parsons, Spies, Engel and Fisher were hung to death, Louis Lingg, in his final protest of the state’s claim of authority and punishment , took his own life ht night before with an explosive device in his mouth.

The remaining organizers, Fielden, Neebe and Schwab, were pardoned six ye4ars later by Governor Altgeld, who publicity lambasted the judge on a travesty of justice. Immediately after Haymarket Massacre, big business and government conducted what some say was the very first “Red Scare” in this country. spun by mainstream media, anarchism became synonymous with bomb throwing and socialism became un – American. The common image of an anarchist became a bearded, eastern European immigrant with bomb in one hand and a dagger in the other.

Today we see tens of thousands of activists embracing the ideals of the Haymarket Martyrs and those who established May Day as an International Workers’ Day. Ironically, May Day is an official holiday in 66 countries and unofficially celebrated in many more, but rarely is it recognized in the country where it began.

Words stronger than any I could write are engraved on the Haymarket Monument:

THE DAY WILL COME WHEN OUR SILENCE WILL BE MORE POWERFUL THAN THE VOICES YOU ARE THROTTLING TODAY.

Truly, history has a lot to teach us about the roots of our radicalism. When we remember that people were shot so we could have the 8-hour day; if we acknowledge that homes with families in them were burned to the ground so we could have Saturday as part of the weekend; when we recall 8-year old victims of industrial accidents who marched in the streets protesting working conditions and child labor only to be beaten down by the police an company thugs, we understand that our current condition cannot be taken for granted – people fought for the right and dignities we enjoy today. And there is still a lot more to fight for. The scarifies of so many people cannot be forgotten or we’ll end up fighting for those same gains all over again. This is why we celebrate May Day.

V.V. Giri National Labour Institute

In India V.V.GIRI National Labour Institute is a premier national institution involved with research, training, education, publication and consultancy on labour related issues. The Institute, established in 1974, is an autonomous body of the Ministry of Labour, Government of India. The Institute was renamed in 1995 in honour of the late President of India, Shri V.V. Giri who was a staunch supporter of labour movement.

The Institute is dedicated through its core activities:

To address the issues of transformation of the world of work in a global economy
To project labour issues as a core concern of policy making
To empower the social actors with capacities to meet the challenge of change
To highlight the role of labour in shaping of modern India
To preserve and disseminate information on labour matters

India and the ILO

India is a fonder member of the International Labour Organization, which came into existence in 1919. At present the ILO has 175 Members. A Unique feature of the ILO is its tripartite character. The membership of the ILO ensures the growth of tripartite system in the Member countries. At every level in the Organization, Governments are associated with the two other social partners, namely the workers and employers. All the three groups are represented on almost all the deliberative organs of the ILO and share responsibility in conducting its work. The three organs of the ILO are.

International Labour Conferences : – General Assembly of the ILO- Meets every year in the month of June.
Governing Body: – Executive Council of the ILO. Meets three times in a year in the months of March, June and November.
International Labour Office : – A permanent secretariat.

The work of the Conference and the Governing Body is supplemented by Regional Conferences, Regional Advisory Committees, Industrial and Analogous Committees, Committee of Experts, Panels of Consultants, Special Conference and meetings , etc.

The approach of India with regard to International Labour Standards has always been positive. The ILO instruments have Provided guidelines and useful framework for the evolution of legislative and administrative measures for the protection and advancement of the interest of labour. To that extent the influence of ILO Conventions as a standard for reference for Labour legislation and practices in India, rather than as a legally binding norm, has been significant.

ILO Area Office, New Delhi

An ILO Branch Office was set up in New Delhi in 1929. The work of the Branch Office consisted of collecting and disseminating information and maintaining links with the government of India and the Organizations of Employers and Workers and Generally publicize the work of ILO among the India audience. With planned programme of decentralization, the Branch Office became an Area Office of ILO in 1970. The Area Office at New Delhi has been changing in its jurisdiction over the years. It now coordinates technical assistance activities in diverse focus as such as rural Labour , women workers, employment generation, occupational safety and health, population control family welfare, etc. in India and Bhutan.
