Dyson V10 Troubleshooting: Fix Common Problems

  • 18 Aug 2023
  • Abdur Rehman

The Dyson V10 is a highly efficient cordless vacuum cleaner designed to help you keep your home spotless. However, occasional malfunctions can occur. You should read some troubleshooting tips to address common issues with your machine:

DYSON V10 TROUBLESHOOTING

Dyson V10 Not Working

Few troubleshooting steps to help you get v 10 back to working condition:

Dyson V10 Not Working

  • Ensure the vacuum is “ Switched On ” and the battery is fully charged.
  • Check if the bin is full: A full bin can hinder airflow and affect the vacuum’s performance.
  • Clean the filters: Over time, dirt and dust can accumulate and clog the filters, reducing airflow. Regular cleaning helps maintain optimal performance.
  • Inspect for blockages: Check both the vacuum cleaner head and hose for any obstructions that may be hindering suction power.

Dyson V10 Not Working After Cleaning Filter:

If your vacuum is still not working properly even after cleaning the filters, it is possible that the filters themselves may be the issue. You can attempt to clean the filters once more.

After cleaning the filter, the vacuum still has not started working then replace your dyson v10 filter with a new one .

Dyson V10 Blockage Light

This vacuum cleaner is designed to keep your cleaning sessions uninterrupted by promptly alerting you if a blockage occurs. The blockage light may illuminate if the bin is full or a blockage in the hose or wand or a blockage in the cleaner head.

Dyson V10 Blockage Light

To resolve blockage issues and resume your cleaning routine, follow these steps:

  • Empty the bin
  • Thoroughly inspect the hose and wand for any potential blockages.
  • Clean the cleaner head to ensure it is free from any obstructions.

In the rare event that the blockage light persists even after you have cleared any blockages, it may be necessary to reach out to Dyson’s dedicated customer service team for further assistance.

Dyson V10 Pulsing

If your machine is pulsing, it could be due to a low battery or dirty filters. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the pulsing issue:

Dyson V10 Pulsing

  • Charge the battery fully.
  • Clean the filters.

If your filter is not in good condition, then replace it with genuine and you should buy dyson genuine filters from dyson filters parts page

Pulsing After Cleaning Filter:

If the vacuum is still pulsing after cleaning the filters, consider the following troubleshooting tips:

  • Allow the filters to completely dry before reinserting them into the vacuum cleaner.
  • Inspect the filters for any signs of damage. Damaged filters may require replacement.
  • Reset the vacuum cleaner by removing the wand and attachments, then press and hold the power button for 10 seconds.

 Dyson V10 Warning Lights

The warning lights that can come on if there is a problem with the vacuum cleaner. These lights include:

  • Blockage light: This light comes on if the vacuum cleaner is blocked.
  • Filter light: This light comes on if the filters are dirty.
  • Battery light: This light comes on to indicate the battery level.

In the event that any of these warning lights appear, please consult the user manual for troubleshooting instructions. If you are unable to resolve the issue, we recommend reaching out to Dyson customer service for further assistance.

Dyson V10 Filter Light Always On:

The filter light should automatically turn off when the filters are clean. However, if the light remains on, it indicates that the filters require cleaning or replacement.

To effectively clean the filters, follow these simple steps:

  • Remove the filters.
  • Rinse the filters thoroughly under warm water.
  • Allow the filters to air dry.
  • Once dry, reinsert the filters back into the vacuum cleaner.

After following these filter cleaning steps, if the light remains on then replace your dyson v10 filter.

To empty the Dyson V10 Animal, follow these steps: 1. Make sure that the appliance is disconnected from the charger before emptying the transparent container. Be careful not to pull the 'ON' trigger. 2. Remove the wand by pressing the red wand release button and pulling it away from the container. 3. To release the dirt, hold the appliance with the container in a downward position and firmly push the red container release button. 4. The container will slide down, cleaning the shroud as it goes. The container base will then open. 5. Empty the container as soon as the dirt reaches the level of the MAX mark. Do not overfill. 6. To minimize dust/allergen contact when emptying, tightly wrap the transparent container in a plastic bag and empty it. Remove the transparent container carefully from the bag. Seal the bag tightly and dispose of it as usual. 7. If necessary, you can clean the transparent container by following the instructions in the 'Emptying the transparent container' section. 8. To reattach the transparent container, insert the spine onto the container runner and close the container by pushing the container base upwards until it clicks into place.

How To Fix It

Dyson V10 not working After Cleaning the Filter? 5 easy things to check.

Is your Dyson V10 not working after cleaning the filter? The Dyson V10’s filter is meant to be thoroughly cleaned at least once a month. You will find yourself needing to clean it more frequently if you use it often or capture lots of fine dust. But what happens if you put the filter back after cleaning and your Dyson vacuum no longer works ?

If your Dyson V10 is not working after cleaning the filter, check that the filter unit is attached correctly. It’s also possible that the filter is still wet after cleaning because it hasn’t been given enough time to dry thoroughly, or that the motor head has failed after sucking in water from that wet filter. There could also be a blockage elsewhere, or the filter could be worn out.

In the following sections, we’ll explore each of those possible reasons why your Dyson V10 isn’t working, even after cleaning the filter. We’ll also walk you through the solutions for each of those issues so you can get your Dyson V10 up and running again.

Possible Reasons For A Dyson V10 Not Working After Cleaning the Filter:

Table of Contents

If your Dyson V10 is not working after cleaning the filter, take a look at the following list, and see which explanation might fit your particular issue.

Related: Dyson Vacuum Troubleshooting Guide

1. Incorrectly Installed Filter

After cleaning the filter on your Dyson V10, you need to reattach it to the vacuum by twisting the cap clockwise until it clicks. Important: the vacuum will not work if it senses that the filter unit is not installed correctly.

Sometimes, the problem might not be a mistake on your part . Besides incorrectly twisting the unit into place, it’s also possible that debris has gotten stuck and is preventing the filter unit from fitting into place as it should. Without a total seal between the filter unit and the rest of the vacuum, the V10 will not work when you pull the trigger.

Another tell-tale sign that the filter unit isn’t installed correctly is a flashing blue light on the side of the unit when you pull the trigger . That is one of several warning lights designed to notify you when the vacuum is facing an issue that requires troubleshooting.

How to fix it:

To troubleshoot and fix this issue, first remove the filter unit from the vacuum. Inspect the sections where the filter unit comes into contact with the vacuum and ensure that there isn’t any debris that will prevent the filter from locking into place.

Next, push the filter unit into place and twist it clockwise until you hear a click. You might find that you have to apply a bit of force because of the rubber gasket (used to form a very tight seal without any air gaps) between the filter and the vacuum unit.

Connect with an Appliance Repair Tech

Click here to use the chatbox to speak with one of our technicians. No in-home service calls. No appointments.

For additional guidance, you can refer to the sticker that’s on the back of the filter unit, which provides you with instructions on attaching it to the V10 correctly.

2. Filter Is Still Wet

Like most people, you’ve probably followed Dyson’s instructions to wash the filter under a cold water tap. Unfortunately, many people do not give the filter enough time to dry out thoroughly afterward . Instead, they mistakenly reattach the filter unit onto the vacuum while it’s still damp.

A wet filter will not allow any air to travel through it , halting all airflow throughout the entire vacuum. When that happens, the Dyson V10 will not allow itself to work as a way of protecting itself against further damage.

If your Dyson V10’s filter is still wet, you must remove it immediately and let it dry overnight . Trying to force the vacuum to work with a wet filter could be very damaging to the appliance and its motor, as you’ll see in the next section.

If the filter is wet, the moisture could find its way into other parts and attachments on the vacuum . That can be very destructive to some of the inner parts. So, if that happens, be sure to take the rest of your vacuum apart and dry out any parts or components that might have become wet.

Dyson recommends that you wash the filter thoroughly and then give it 24 hours to dry out entirely. That can be a very long time if you’re planning on using the vacuum to do more cleaning on the same day. So, be sure to plan ahead.

When drying the filter, you do not have to use a hairdryer, heat gun, or any other heat source to do so . It’s also not a good idea to dry it under direct, scorching sunlight, as that could cause more wear and tear to the filter as well.

Instead, the most effective way to dry the vacuum filter thoroughly is to put it in a place where there’s some airflow (a portable fan works well). Then, leave the filter to air dry for the next 24 hours , and you’ll be able to use your vacuum like normal again.

3. The Motor head Has Failed

Another possibility why your Dyson V10 not working is that the motor head on your Dyson V10 has failed completely. If this happens after you’ve just cleaned the filter , then it’s likely that the filter was still wet when you reattached it to the vacuum.

Cutaway of Dyson V10 vacuum

The water from the wet filter would have been sucked in by the motor and damaged it to the point that it can no longer function correctly . That happens when the water finds its way into the electrical parts of the motor, causing a short circuit that damages the motor and makes it completely unusable.

If the motor head on your Dyson V10 has suffered from water damage, then the only solution here is to replace the motor entirely . The best way to do that is to contact Dyson’s customer support to see if they can do that for you. If not, they should be able to tell you what your options are for getting it fixed.

Another option is to go directly to your local appliance repair specialist. They would be able to source the replacement motor and fix it for you as well.

Once the motor head has been replaced with a new one that functions correctly, you’ll be able to continue using your Dyson V10 vacuum like you usually do.

4. The Filter Has Worn Out

The filters on Dyson V10 vacuums are designed to last only two years, with regular use. They will last longer if you rarely use your vacuum, or they’ll wear out quicker if you use it more than the average user . That’s especially true if you use it to capture lots of very fine dust, which saturates the filters much quicker.

When these Dyson vacuum filters catch large pieces of dust and debris, they’re easy to clean. If you wash these filters regularly under a cold tap, most of the dust and debris will be removed without any problems.

However, the same filters also have very tiny pores that capture fine dust. That fine dust is not so easy to remove even after repeated washing.

2 Pack V10 Filter Replacement for Dyson Vacuum

That means that over time and especially after regular washing, the filter will become worn out as part of its regular wear and tear. The filter will become saturated with dust, reducing the amount of airflow that can easily pass through the filter.

A vacuum with a clogged filter will not only perform poorly, but also it will put extra stress on the motor and cause premature failure.

If your Dyson V10 has been using the same filter for two years or more, then it’s time to purchase a replacement. It’s always best to buy replacement filters directly from Dyson instead of third-party sellers . That way, you can rest assured that the filter is compatible with your Dyson V10 and that it is highly reliable.

5. There Are Blockages Elsewhere

Even though you’ve cleaned the Dyson V10’s filter, it’s possible that you may have overlooked a blockage elsewhere in the vacuum . When this happens, the vacuum will pulsate whenever you pull the trigger.

Dyson V10 not working: blockage

The Dyson V10 is designed sometimes to pulsate when you pull the trigger as a way to notify you that there’s a problem . It does that in order to prevent the motor from running continuously in a way that might damage itself.

If the vacuum is pulsating, then there might be a blockage in the brush bar, the wand, or the inlet . These sections should also be cleaned thoroughly whenever you clean the vacuum’s filter.

To fix this problem:

  • Remove all of the Dyson V10’s parts and attachments after you’ve cleaned the filter.
  • Inspect the brush bar, the wand, and the inlet (where the wand meets the vacuum) for any blockages.
  • Clean them out and ensure that air can flow through each part without any obstructions.
  • Doing so will ensure that air can flow from the bottom of the vacuum (at the brushbar) all the way to the top (at the filter) without any obstructions.

My dyson 7jammed after opening to empty dirt bin. I can not push the top mechanism back in place.

My cordless dyson vacuum cleaner V10 is not charging at all. The blue light comes on at first then it shuts off completely , therefore not charging at all. Filter is cleaned . I have not used it frequently because it is used in the motor home and when in use it’s about 1/2 hr at a time. I expected the battery would have lasted longer with minimum use. What can I do? I have tried to reset the battery by unplugging the charger and reconnecting to the vacuum ,then holding the start button for 20 seconds with no success.

I can not open up the canister to remove the debris. While I have cleaned the canister it will no longer allow me to clean the canister at all.

I washed the filter in my V11, I let it dry, the motor did work without the filter attached, but now after it dried I installed the filter and it does not work. Could some water gotten into the motor? Is there a reset button or fuse somewhere that could be tripped? How hard is itplace the motorhead, I am quite handy and have fixed an older V7 brush bar replacement.

What does it mean when the filter light on the unit remains on (isn’t flashing)?

You must still be in guarantee. I needed new filter within 2 years. I’d ring Dyson as very helpful in or out of guarantee. Told me to take off collecting bin and gently tap metal drum to remove more dust.

I have the same issue with my Dyson v10. I have watched the videos and have cleaned it accordingly. The filter was rinsed clean and dried for 48 hrs. It indicates with the light that there is a blockage and it pulsates. It is only a year old if that. What should I do?

I would ring Dyson. You still must be in guarantee but even if not they are extremely helpful and tell you to do other things to solve the problem like gently tapping the metal cylinder to remove any dust build up. I needed a new filter within two years.

I can’t find a blockage anywhere and it’s still pulsating. Please advise.

Did you take apart filter? Search video on Youtube “How To Clean Dyson Vacuum?”

Buy a new dyson

Hi there I have this same problem, I even put on a new filter unit. Did you get this resolved? Thanks.

I washed the filter and let it sit for 24 hours. When I went to use it, there were bubbles coming out of the sides of the filter! I did NOT use any soap when I washed it. I washed it again, let it sit for 24 hours and the same thing happened! This is the Dyson 10. It’s a year old.

Advice please!

You should have not let it dry 24 but 48 hrs. Now it is unusable.. Buy another one.

Dyson Troubleshooting (Dyson V8, V10 and V11 etc.)

Robbert Tigchelaar

At Vacuumtester.com I receive daily messages about Dyson vacuum cleaners. It often concerns Dyson problems, where people are curious what the solution is. I have written dozens of guides on solving specific Dyson problems on this website.

On this page I list the most common problems and how you can solve them – in most cases – quickly. A complete Dyson troubleshooting guide!

Various Dyson problems

Dyson vacuum cleaners come in many types and designs. When I look at the problems that I often receive in my inbox, it turns out in many cases to be the cordless Dyson vacuum cleaners. Specifically the following models: Dyson V7, Dyson V8, Dyson V10 and Dyson V11.

The problems can be divided into the following categories:

  • Notifications: a Dyson can provide notifications on the LCD screen or with lights near the battery.
  • Loss of suction power: the Dyson hardly sucks anything anymore
  • Electricity problems: the vacuum cleaner no longer charges or the battery suddenly has a very short life
  • Bad smells: the vacuum cleaner smells
  • Weird noises: suddenly makes a lot of noise
  • Visible issues: Damage or Dyson parts not fitting together properly

Dyson troubleshooting

Of course I would like to help you to solve these problems as soon as possible. As I mentioned in the introduction, I have already written a manual for all Dyson problems on Vacuumtester.com. You can quickly find the problem solution in the overview below. You can also click through to the complete manual (often with video!) for handy step-by-step plans.

Buying Dyson replacement parts

When you have come to the conclusion that you need new Dyson parts, there are a number of factors to consider. It is very important to know which Dyson you have so that you buy parts that actually fit your vacuum cleaner. For example, a filter for the Dyson V8 is different from that of a Dyson V11.

In addition, I recommend that you buy parts from Dyson yourself. I have found that many problems with a Dyson are caused by the use of aftermarket parts. In other words: parts that are not Dyson's own. Check out a complete guide to all the Dyson parts out there here.

Preventing problems with your Dyson vacuum cleaner

It is interesting to think about how you can possibly prevent or postpone problems in the future. For example, I previously did research into the Dyson vacuum battery life , where I already gave tips on how you can use your battery for longer.

Below are some interesting tips that will help you extend the life of your Dyson vacuum cleaner and parts (and thus prevent problems):

  • Clean the Dyson filters regularly
  • Replace the filters of your Dyson vacuum cleaner at least every 12 months
  • Check the vacuum cleaner regularly for blockages
  • Keep the parts clean; For example, regularly remove hair from the brushes
  • Charge the battery at 20% battery life
  • Use the Dyson vacuum as little as possible in turbo mode
  • Only buy and use parts from Dyson itself

Fortunately, the various activities above are not a chore. For example, watch the video below to see how easy it is to clean a Dyson HEPA filter.

Check your warranty period at Dyson

When you have bought a Dyson vacuum cleaner, it is strongly recommended to register it on the Dyson website. This allows you to see exactly when you bought it and what your rights are in terms of warranty. You may experience problems within your warranty period, which means you may be entitled to a replacement battery.

I hope my article has solved your Dyson problem. If not, leave a comment at the bottom of this page so I can help you.

Hiya, I have a Dyson v13 vacuum. It was ok until I tried to clean the air nose.it was still a bit damp when I turned it on. It’s not showing anything when you plug in now and don’t do anything. Do you think I have to take it to a shop to repair? Thank you.

' src=

Can you please check which model you have? The Dyson V13 is not an existing model (it could be the Dyson V12 Slim or the Dyson V15 Detect).

When I plug in to the charger the light on the plug flashes once then nothing. No charge!!! HELP PLEASE

Have you checked the cable yet Paul?

the red on/off switch does not seem to be working…please advise

It’s quite possible that it’s broken. This often happens with trigger buttons. I’ve written an article on how you can replace this Dyson trigger yourself.

Thanks for sharing all your experiences. I have the Dyson V11 Animal. It’s a little over 2 years old and I use it daily to keep our carpets clean with 2 cats. I clean the V11 motor head religiously (cat hair accumulates at both ends of the bar) and recently replaced the exhaust filter(OEM) A blockage does not appear to be the issue. All of a sudden the torque head’s beater bar has started to chatter/vibrate loudly. It happens intermittently, not a constant issue. Sound familiar? I’m wondering if my motor is going out?

Hi Barry, in some cases, there could also be a blockage in the vacuum wand or at the motor’s air inlet. I recommend reading this article on a Dyson air way blockage and following all the steps!
