A Note on “Work From Home” Jobs, Telecommuting, and Remote Work

Let’s take a moment to clear up the difference between work-from-home jobs, telecommuting jobs, and remote work.

  • Work-from-home jobs are exactly how they sound — jobs working at home. This term speaks to the assumption that jobs are either done in a traditional office or from your living room, but — for many people — working out of their house is a perfect remote solution.
  • Telecommuting jobs typically allow people to work from their home (or elsewhere) for companies or organizations that are still in their immediate area. A job where someone works in an office three days a week, but spends two days working from home is a classic example of telecommuting.
  • Remote work is a catch-all term that applies to work that can be done from anywhere in the world. Since working from home jobs and telecommuting jobs are subsets of remote work, we prefer to use remote work to describe any job that doesn’t involve being tied to a specific office or workplace. If you’re working from home, that’s remote work; if you’re working from a coworking space, a coffee shop, or the beach, that’s also remote work, too.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the number of people doing some or all of their work remotely was on the rise even before 2020, so there’s no time like the present to get in on the unique benefits and advantages an online remote job has to offer .

  • Indeed.com.
  • We Work Remotely.
  • Zip Recruiter.
  • Jobspresso.
  • Working Nomads.
  • JustRemote.

(Editor's note: Robin Madell has been a contributing writer at FlexJobs and Remote.co.)

Launched in 2007, FlexJobs was created specifically to help professionals find remote and flexible jobs. The site's founder, Sara Sutton, explains she was inspired to start FlexJobs because she had been looking for a remote opportunity with a flexible schedule while pregnant and was discouraged by how many bogus job sites there were in this niche.

FlexJobs' staff researches what they identify as the best job listings for professional positions in more than 50 career fields worldwide. Opportunities are part-time , full-time, on a flexible schedule and on an alternative schedule. Positions range from entry-level to executive-level. FlexJobs provides client support for members and a money-back guarantee. Pricing starts at $2.95 for a 14-day trial.

Remote.co , a FlexJobs partner also founded by Sutton, describes itself as a site for "all things remote work." It offers sections for employers to post remote jobs and for job seekers to find those opportunities. The site also includes a remote work blog and common work-from-home questions answered by 146 remote companies and virtual teams.

One of the major job search sites for traditional work,  Indeed also has a special section for remote jobs. The site currently lists more than 47,000 remote jobs that are searchable by job type, keywords or company. Indeed also lets users browse companies by industry, search for salaries and upload resumes so that employers can find them.

We Work Remotely

According to the We Work Remotely site, its community has over 4.5 million visitors. The site lists remote jobs in categories including programming, design, customer support, and sales and marketing . It also designates between full-time and contract positions. We Work Remotely also offers a number of resources for remote job seekers including a Remote Leader Playbook, remote work trends and the top 100 remote companies.

ZipRecruiter

While ZipRecruiter is a larger job board that publishes opportunities about traditional jobs as well, it contains a section specifically for remote positions.

Some of the most popular types of remote jobs listed on the site are administrative, part-time and contract work. The site also has contract-to-hire and part-time jobs. Some of the most popular remote job titles found on the site are teacher, graphic designer and bookkeeper.

A free site that's targeted solely toward remote jobs, Jobspresso has over 1,000 openings listed, featuring tech roles in software development, design, user experience, and development and operations, as well as writing, editing and product management.

Jobspresso curates, reviews and adds to its listings daily. According to the Jobspresso website, "100% of our jobs are hand-picked, manually reviewed and expertly curated."

Working Nomads

Working Nomads distinguishes itself from other sites by offering a remote job board that spans positions worldwide. It targets job seekers who want to “work remotely from your home or places around the world.” It offers fully remote positions and partly remote jobs where you might need to spend some time on site for training or team-building purposes.

Listing remote jobs in software development, customer support, marketing, design and other industries, the Remote OK site states that its job board reaches more than 2.6 million remote workers.

Job seekers can search by salary and benefits as well as job title and location. The site also includes an opportunity for remote workers and nomads to sign up to receive global health insurance.

This is a free, standard job board with a category search and a community option to receive newsletters and webinars via email on topics relevant to remote job searchers and workers. It allows you to search for jobs by skill and location or by company.

Though the Remotive site places an emphasis on remote tech opportunities, it posts other types of remote jobs as well. Job hunters can use a “Remotive Accelerator” to unlock over 34,000 additional opportunities.

Things to Know Before Applying

  • Full-time applying – Applying for jobs on these remote job websites can be a full-time job. Trust me; I’ve been there. You’ll have to find a true balance on how to best spend your time because, remember, you’re not getting paid to sit around and apply! It can be frustrating at times, but once the ball gets rolling and you find a groove, you’ll be golden.
  • Stretch, but don’t jump – If you want to stretch your experience a bit and are confident you can still deliver – I’ll encourage you to do so! Go for it. BUT –  don’t jump all in. Don’t apply for jobs that are far beyond your realm; you’ll hurt your rating, and it’s hard to come back. Also, again, you don’t want to waste time applying for jobs you’re never going to get!
  • Ratings – Speaking of ratings, many of these job sites have a review system in place where you review the employer, and they review you. DON’T apply and not deliver, don’t overstep your experience, don’t flake. Again, it’s tough to come back from negative reviews!
  • If it’s too good to be true – WALK AWAY.
  • Never do work for free – even tests should be paid, or at the least, don’t take more than 20 minutes of your time.
  • Never do work off the platform or communicate off the platform (at least not until you’ve built up a trust)
  • NEVER pay them for equipment, training, resources or anything to start a job.
  • If it smells fishy, if you feel something in your gut, or if they are giving you the runaround if you’ve put A LOT of time in already and they still haven’t started a contract or anything – Just cut the ties now.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of These Remote Jobs

  • More than one – You’ll likely want to be on more than one, or even two, of these platforms to spread yourself over and have the chance at more jobs. Find your favorites and apply often!
  • Don’t blindly apply – When I put out jobs, I can always tell when someone didn’t thoroughly read my job posting. Make sure to answer every question the employer poses in your pitch!
  • Get set up – I’ve been working online for around eight years; trust me when I say, you need a decent setup. Here’s my small and travel-friendly home office set up. Feel free to copy it. It’s fantastic, takes up no space, can travel, and is cheap! I was on the verge of getting carpal tunnel, don’t be like me, get your set up now.
  • Working off the platform – It’s a no-no to work off the platforms such as Upwork or Fivver, but after a month or two, or after everyone feels comfortable, this can be done so that there are no more platform fees being taken out. Remember, it’s against the rules to work off the platform (you can get kicked off!), but after a month, if you happen to have each other’s emails and all of a sudden start getting paid via Paypal or something and end the contract on the platform… I mean…
  • GO TRAVEL! – Hey, these sites are for working remotely, so if you only need a laptop and a wifi connection, why not take off and go travel? You’re not a tree. These all make for great digital nomad job options. Not to mention, if you’re starting out low, you could live in a place with a cheaper cost of living , making life a bit easier while you get the ball rolling. This is exactly what I did when I started working online. Check out these countries that offer Digital Nomad Visas .

Working from home is more than just a popular employee perk. Whether you’re pressed for time to run errands or share childcare responsibilities with your spouse, remote work has provided some serious flexibility for employees in the modern era.

Unfortunately, with many businesses issuing return-to-office mandates , devoid of any research to back it up, these kinds of roles have been dwindling across the business landscape. But that doesn’t mean they’re impossible to find.

In this guide, we’ll cover a wide range of roles from businesses like Google, Amazon, and many others, so you can finally enjoy the flexible work arrangements that became so widespread during the pandemic.

While Google has been one of the businesses in recent memory that are trying to get the majority of employees back in the office at least some of the time, the company does offer a smattering of positions, approximately 60 as of writing, that will allow you to work from home.

Speaking of powerhouses in their industry, Shopify is one of the best ecommerce website builders you can get your hands on, offering robust tools that can help you build an online store . Like Square, the company also dabbles in POS, offering functionality for restaurants and retail shops.

Shopify is big on remote work, with all the current open positions offering remote work. The company doesn’t even list where the offices are based, as they want employees to feel free to apply to any position.

“Work should be built around mission, not headquarters.” – Harley Finkelstein, president of Shopify

While it’s certainly not considered one of the big tech firms, HubSpot is a powerhouse in the CRM industry, offering handy solutions for businesses looking to manage customer relationships. In fact, we found it to be the best CRM for marketing in our in-depth research, but that won’t help you find a remote job.

What will help you is the fact that HubSpot is firmly committed to providing workers with flexible accommodations, offering in-office, hybrid, and remote roles depending on your particular needs. The company even developed a hybrid work report in 2023 to study the importance of the movement for employees and businesses alike.

All this results in a lot of possible roles to choose from, with the HubSpot career page showing nearly 100 open remote work roles available at the company. Here are a few of them to get you started:

  • Account Executive – Mid Market, DACH (Germany)

Square has become a well-known name in the point-of-sale (POS) and ecommerce website builder markets, providing an easy-to-use and affordable means of accepting payments in-person and online. We’ve ever found it to be the best POS system for small businesses , thanks to its free plan that charges nothing but transaction fees.

Square isn’t necessarily a big company, with fewer than 4,000 employees worldwide. Still, the company has continued to support its flexible workforce, offering more than 100 remote roles through offices in Australia, Japan, Ireland, the US, and the UK. That’s nearly half the amount of total open roles, which sits at just over 250 for Square in May 2024.

Here are some of the work-from-home jobs that are currently looking for applicants:

Businesswoman with headphones smiling during video conference. Multiracial male and female ... [+] professionals are attending online meeting. They are discussing business strategy.

Here are five things in tech that happened this week and how they affect your business. Did you miss them?

1 – 23 work-from-home tech products that will level up your office.

PCWorld presented a lengthy list of “work-at-home essentials” they recommend that will enhance your productivity and home office environment. Among them include: The Logitech C920e webcam for virtual meetings. Its crisp resolution and autofocus capability are just a couple of notable specs. The adjustable laptop stand by Lamicall is noted for support when positioned in front of a screen throughout the day. The Hiearcool USB-C with several connections including a microSD and USB-A port for just $25 bucks. Logitech’s MK540 wireless keyboard and mouse combo is listed for its affordability and performance. For the entire list, visit the link. (Source: PCWorld )

Why this is important for your business:

We’re all working remotely nowadays and I found this list really useful – I even bought a few products from it!

2 – DailyPay to offer earned wage access to small businesses nationwide.

Payment platform DailyPay is expanding its services to small businesses with 400 or fewer employees, the company announced in a press release. Services like DailyPay that offer employees “Earned Wage Access” – giving them flexibility in when they receive payment – is a growing method as shown in recent studies. (Source: PRNewswire )

I’ve been writing and talking about earned wage access for a while but one of the limitations was that platforms like DailyPay were only available for larger enterprises. But no more. Offering an earned waged access solution is a great benefit to provide to your employees, particularly when as many as 60 percent of them are living paycheck-to-paycheck. It could make the difference between hiring or losing that next good worker.

3 – Ransom payments surge by 500% to an average of $2m.

Funds that are lost to ransom attacks is soaring, James Coker of Infosecurity reports. Payments have increased 500 percent as compared to 2023 (Source: Infosecurity Magazine ; PRNewswire )

Coker cites cybersecurity company Sophos and their State of Ransomware 2024 report that shows 63 percent (nearly two-thirds) were ransom demands of $1M or more and 30 percent exceeded $5 million. In correlation to the ransomware stats, cybersecurity firm SonicWall released a report of the “Top 5 most widespread network attacks” that are used against small businesses. The most used affecting 43 percent of SMBs is what’s known as Log4j. Discovered in 2021, this vulnerability has been “one of the most widely deployed” (globally) where hackers have used malicious scripts exposing passwords and other sensitive information on Windows and Linux systems.

4 – Amazon introduces an AI Assistant.

Amazon’s AI assistant – Amazon Q – is offering business owners and developers access to its capabilities of harnessing data, software development, and applications to boost productivity. As detailed on the AWS blog , there are three specialized assistants: Amazon Q Business, Amazon Q Developer, and Amazon Q in QuickSight. A breakdown of each assistant is presented in a video on the AWS blog. (Source: ZDNet )

With Amazon Q Business, apps can be created based on the insights of employees who are looking to streamline tasks or find more efficient ways of organizing/retrieving data. The assistant will build the app specified to the input given by the user. Developers can use the Amazon Q Developer to request “real time code suggestions” and speed up the process of working with Java.

5 – Microsoft Teams added many new features in April 2024, like multi-turn chats with Copilot.

Microsoft Teams has been newly-updated with features like Microsoft Planner – a task management app that organizes task management and project scheduling; multi-turn chats – users can ask follow-up questions after Microsoft Copilot has produced a chat summary; town halls can also be created for multiple team members with real-time captions available in six different languages; and it will be easier to retrieve and attach files during chat sessions. (Source: Neowin )

I strongly suggest hiring a Microsoft consultant to review all the features of Teams to your group. Why? Because I’m pretty sure you’re using a very small percentage of everything available to your company…and you’re paying for it!

How-To Geek

How to get microsoft office for free.

Don't want to pay for a subscription or buy the standalone version?

Quick Links

Use office online in a browser; it's free, sign up for a free one-month trial, get office free as a student or teacher, try the mobile apps on phones and small ipads, join someone's microsoft 365 home plan, free microsoft office alternatives, key takeaways.

There are a few ways to get Microsoft Office for free: You can use Office for free in your browser, you can sign up for a one-month free trial, or you may get access through your educational institution if you’re a student or teacher.

Microsoft Office normally starts at $70 per year, but there are quite a few ways to get it for free. We'll show you all the ways you can get Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office applications without paying a cent.

Whether you're using a Windows PC, Mac, or Chromebook, you can use Microsoft Office for free in a web browser. The web-based versions of Office are simplified and won't work offline, but they still offer a powerful editing experience. You can open and create Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents right in your browser.

To access these free web apps, just head to Office.com and sign in with a free Microsoft account. Click an application icon—like Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—to open the web version of that application.

You can also drag and drop a file from your computer onto the Office.com page. It will be uploaded to your Microsoft account's free OneDrive storage, and you can open it in the associated application.

Office's web applications have some limitations. These applications aren't quite as full featured as the classic Office desktop applications for Windows and Mac, and you can't access them offline. But they do offer surprisingly powerful Office applications, and they're completely free.

If you just need Microsoft Office for a short period of time, you can sign up for a one-month free trial. To find this offer, head to Microsoft's Try Microsoft 365 for free website, and sign up for the trial.

You will have to provide a credit card to sign up for the trial, and it will automatically renew after the month. However, you can cancel your subscription at any time—even right after signing up—to ensure you won't get billed. You can continue using Office for the rest of your free month after canceling.

After joining the trial, you can download full versions of these Microsoft Office applications for Windows PCs and Macs. You'll also get access to the full versions of the apps on other platforms, including larger iPads.

This trial will give you full access to a Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) Home plan. You'll get Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and 1TB of storage in OneDrive. You can share it with up to five other people. They'll each get access to the apps via their Microsoft account, and will have their own 1TB of storage for a combined 6TB of storage.

Microsoft also offers free 30-day evaluations of Microsoft 365 for Business , which is intended for businesses. You might be able to take advantage of both offers for two months of free Microsoft Office access.

Many educational institutions pay for Office 365 plans, allowing students and teachers to download the software for free.

To find out if your school participates, head to the Office 365 Education website, and enter your school email address. You'll be offered a free download if it's available to you through your school's plan.

Even if a university or college doesn't participate, it may offer Microsoft Office at a reduced cost to students and teachers through its bookstore. Check with your educational institution—or at least look on its website—for more details.

Microsoft's Office apps are free on smartphones, too. On an iPhone or Android phone, you can download the Office mobile apps to open, create, and edit documents for free.

On an iPad or Android tablet, these apps will only let you create and edit documents if you have a "device with a screen size smaller than 10.1 inches." On a larger tablet, you can install these apps to view documents, but you'll need a paid subscription to create and edit them.

In practice, this means Word, Excel, and PowerPoint offer a full experience for free on the iPad Mini and older 9.7-inch iPads. You'll need a paid subscription to get document-editing capabilities an iPad Pro or newer 10.2-inch iPads.

Microsoft 365 Home subscriptions are meant to be shared among multiple people. The $70 per year version offers Office for a single person, while the $100 per year subscription offers Office for up to six people. You'll get the full experience, with Office for Windows PCs, Macs, iPads, and other devices.

Anyone who pays for Microsoft 365 Home (formerly known as Office 365 Home) can share it with up to five other Microsoft accounts. It's very convenient: Sharing is managed through an Office "Sharing" page on Microsoft's account website. The main owner of the account can add five other Microsoft accounts, and each of those accounts will receive an invitation link.

After joining the group, each person can sign in with their own Microsoft account to download the Office apps—just as if they were paying for their own subscriptions. Each account will have a separate 1TB of OneDrive storage.

Microsoft says the subscription is meant for sharing among your "household." So, if you have a family member or even a roommate with this service, that person can add you to their subscription for free.

The Home plan is definitely the best deal if you're going to pay for Microsoft Office. If you can split a $100 per year subscription among six people, that's under $17 every year per person.

By the way, Microsoft partners with some employers to offer a discount on Office subscriptions for their employees. Check Microsoft's Home Use Program website to see if you qualify for a discount.

If you're looking for something else, consider choosing a different office application. There are completely free office suites that sport good compatibility with Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentation files. Here are some of the best:

  • LibreOffice is a free and open-source office application for Windows, Mac, Linux, and other operating systems. It's similar to the desktop versions of Microsoft Office , and it can even work with and create Office documents in common file types like DOCX documents, XLSX spreadsheets, and PPTX presentations. LibreOffice was based on OpenOffice. While OpenOffice is still around, LibreOffice has more developers and is now the more popular project. You can even make LibreOffice look like Microsoft Office .
  • Apple iWork is a free collection of office applications for Mac, iPhone, and iPad users. This is Apple's competitor to Microsoft Office, and it used to be paid software before Apple made it free. Windows PC users can access a web-based version of iWork through the iCloud website, too.
  • Google Docs is a capable collection of web-based office software. It stores your files in Google Drive , Google's online file storage service. Unlike Microsoft's Office web apps, you can even access Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides offline in Google Chrome.

There are many other alternatives, but these are some of the best.

If you just don't want to pay a monthly fee, you can still purchase a boxed copy of Microsoft Office. However, Office Home & Student 2021 costs $150, and you can only install it on one device.

Microsoft is slated to release a standalone version of Office 2024 , but it has not been released yet. Be sure to keep an eye out for it.

You won't get a free upgrade to the next major version of Office, either. If you're going to pay for Office, the subscription is probably the best deal —especially if you can split a paid plan with other people.
