Valued as a $28 billion industry in 2021, the second-hand clothing industry, or thrifting industry, has been exploding (2020 Fashion Resale Market and Trend Report, 2020). This has been aided by a myriad of technological advancements, social movements, and economic factors. The goal of this thesis is to uncover consumer behaviors leading to this growth across behavioral, emotional, perceptual, and belief factors. Additionally, this thesis aims to provide strategic implications for marketing professionals, create recommendations for brands to successfully enter this industry and target consumers. In this study, a Qualtrics survey was distributed to students at Arizona State University. The results were analyzed through Microsoft Excel. The results showed that in order to be successful in this industry, brands should: emphasize sustainability in marketing, increase brand awareness, highlight feelings of pride in products, uniqueness, and affordability, mitigate feelings of poverty, low quality, and lack of variety, understand the perceptual differences in shopping versus thrifting, and take advantage of branded fashion.

Second Hand Clothing: A Step towards Frugality and Sustainable Future
This paper portrays the approach of how we can diminish fabric and environmental waste by selling pre-owned clothes. Pre-owned clothes, referred to reusing any cloth that has been worn by someone else before. The goal is to bring down the stats of fabric waste and make extra money out of it. Our sustainable fashion website provides a medium where people can buy, sell and donate pre-owned clothes. Instead of throwing clothes in the garbage, they can donate. This way, we can help poor people find their comfort. If we look into figures, globally we produce 13 to 17 million tons of fabric waste each year which is leading us to an environmental crisis. The study says 95% of that waste can be recycled or reused. We will build a platform that can become a savior of that fabric waste.

The textile industry plays an important role in Romania’s economy and its products are a necessity in people's lives, not only in the form of apparel but also in the automotive industry, construction, computers, agriculture etc., due to the expansion of their fields of use. Numerous studies have shown that this industry is, after oil, the second most polluting industry in the world. In addition to the multitude of chemicals used in the production process and a large amount of water and energy consumed, the textile industry generates considerable waste. This paper aims to identify the main sources of textile waste in Romania and it proposes the alternative of customized clothes using textile waste in order to rethink, reuse or recycle waste in the production stage. This strategy can be successfully integrated into the vertical value chain by strengthening the creation department, and clothing design and by involving the marketing and sales divisions. In the clothing industry, the...

Introduction: The consumption patterns of consumers have changed. The consumers are more detached from their clothing and are disconnected from environmental and social impact. Unfortunately conventional modes of production, using and disposing off apparel have significant adverse impact on environment as well as on people and communities. Growing amount of textile waste has become a serious concern. The purpose of the study is to find the behavior of the consumers towards the amount of textile waste generated. Studying consumers buying behavior and the way they discard apparel and other products could be very useful in dealing with this challenge.

Textiles, the fastest growing sector in household waste, have created an exponential rise in the export of second hand clothes (SHC) to overseas markets such as Kenya and Tanzania. Despite the few advantages for the destination markets (eg, enterprise opportunities), this has exasperated a difficult situation for domestic production. Increased cheap imports from Asia have also led to decline in SHC markets, resulting in increased land filling and the associated environmental impacts. Our research proposes remanufacturing fashion from the unwanted SHC, embellishing using local (destination market) craft/design. From literature review conducted, reuse and remanufacture of clothing causes the least impact on energy use and appears to be the most environmentally and socially friendly approach to sustainability efforts. Remanufacture of clothing is currently practiced at niche market levels, for it to have a broader impact; it needs to gain entry into the mass-market retail arena. In the...
