How to Ace your Business Management Internal Assessment (HL)

Business Management Internal Assessment (IA) is a significant component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level (HL) program. It requires students to conduct research, analyze data, and apply business management concepts to a real-world business situation. The IA contributes 20% towards the final grade and is an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills and understanding of business management. However, with proper planning and preparation, students can ace their Business Management IA.

Section I: Pre-Research Proposal Material

1. Title page Include: ● Your Research Question ● Intended Audience (i.e. To Company X) ● The IB Number (Something in the format “QWE123” ● Session (i.e. May 2019) ● Proposal word count and IA word count. (Note that the Executive Summary is not counted in the 2000 words allowed for the IA.)

2. Acknowledgements

3.Contents Page Include information about (and page numbers for): ● Your proposal ● All parts of your IA ● Your Appendices

Section II: The Research Proposal Layout

Research Proposal (A total of 500 words) The research proposal section is written in the future tense. Include: ● Your RQ (Research Question) ● Rationale ○ How this RQ relates to current company priorities or challenges. ○ Discuss WHY the company should have interest in your topic! For instance, the company is currently planning an expansion for a second outlet and your IA provides a qualitative and quantitative analysis that will help them evaluate their decision.

● Theoretical Framework ○ Academic content (i.e. textbook chapters), reference to chosen business tools listed. Provide an explanation of how each will help you answer the RQ. ○ The tools with good scope for evaluation include Steeple, Ansoff, BCG matrix, product life cycle, ratio analysis, investment appraisal, break even analysis.

● Methodology ○ State the sources of primary and secondary data collation, including the names of people you will interview (and why), focus group format, or questionnaire content. It is good to  Include more than one source of primary data. If you can’t do two interviews, you’ll likely want to do something like a survey or an observation.

● Anticipated Difficulties. ○ Explain some possible problems you will likely face, the reasons for these difficulties and how you plan to deal with them. ○ Try to go beyond the obvious ones, such as bias and access to information. ○ Tell us why some of the information you need could be hard to get or unreliable.

● Action Plan. ○ Include dates and also a section where you show modifications you’ve made, as you completed your work. ○ This shows that you actually used your action plan during your IA. Also, at least one of these modifications should show that you actually learned something (or realized something related to business) and that’s why you made the change. ○ This again shows that you were growing as a result of your work which starts to build the case for Criterion I (Reflective Thinking).

● Include the word count for the entire proposal.

Section III: The IA Layout

The Internal Assessment (Maximum 2000 words) 1.Executive Summary (Abstract) (Maximum 200 words- not included in word count) ● Introduce the company and its current situation ● State your RQ ● State the tools you used in your study ● Elaborate on your primary and secondary research ● Explain key research findings ● Explain limitations of your research

2.Introduction (approx. 200 words) ● Introduce the company and explain its main business activities ● Explain their current strategic objectives ● Explain the business problem your RQ is based on Explain which sections of the IB business course you will use for your RQ

3.Methodology (approx. 200 words) Details of the primary and secondary data you will be using to investigate your RQ. For example, why a stratified sampling or face to face interview was conducted. You should explain how these will help you to answer your RQ ● Rationale for using the selected sources of data. ● Business tools you will be using to answer your RQ ● Explain how valid your research methodology will be, ● Explain the changes made to your IA methodology throughout your research.

4.Main Results and Findings (approx. 300 words) Include: ● Graphs, statistics, or relevant information. ● A research summary to state the key facts you found from your primary and secondary sources

5. Analysis and discussion (approx. 900 words) For each tool (3 or 4 of them) include: ● A clear justification of the use of the theory (how it will help answer the RQ), ● Make sure you are using a proper structure and that as much of your information as possible is coming through the tools (rather than in paragraph form). ● The analysis (i.e. the SWOT, etc), and then ● The mini-conclusion (linking the findings of the tool to the RQ). ● QE recommends at least one financial tool, but this should come after your qualitative tools. In general we like to see qualitative tools (such as SWOT and PEST) come before the quantitative ones (like ratio analysis and decision trees), because the qualitative tools set the scene and provide context for the financials.

6.Conclusions (200 words) You should not include any new data ● Pull your mini-conclusions together (synthesize them), make some interesting insights based on them (i.e. pros and cons, short-term vs long-term effects, possible stakeholder conflicts). ● This is where you really get to shine. Take time with your conclusion, so you can really emphasize everything you’ve discovered and how it all fits together to answer your RQ. ● Mention some limitations to your research. There needs to be at least one, probably two. Show you have really reflected on your work. You could discuss other information that would be very valuable to have, but which you couldn’t access. You could discuss possible inaccuracies in your work and the reasons for those. This is similar to how you write your EE reflections.

7. Recommendations (approx. 200 words) Include: ● 3 recommendations for improvement(such as changes or improvement to the company’s proposed action) ● One more question for future research. This will improve the reliability of your study and provide scope for future studies to address limitations of your IA.

Choosing the business

Choosing the question, type of research, research proposal & action plan, main results and findings, analysis and evaluation, presentation, pay attention to the assessment criteria.

IB Business IA Tips

Internal Assessment is compulsory for both SL and HL students enabling you to demonstrate the application of skills and knowledge, and to pursue personal interests in business management. The IA requirements for SL and HL students are different. The SL IA is a written commentary and the HL IA is a research project .

To produce IA, you need to choose, know, and analyze the business.

IAs are marked by school teachers and externally moderated by the IB. Examiners moderate IAs using the best-fit model and spend around 10-15 minutes on marking one IA, usually reading it only once. Different assessment criteria are provided for SL and HL students.

The total number of marks for IA is 25 marks, for both SL and HL, and IAs contribute 25% to the final grade. Therefore, without a good IA, it barely possible to score a 6 or 7 in DP Business Management.

SL students should spend around 15 hours while HL students should spend around 30 hours on their IAs. SL students need around 20-25 marks to get a 7, and around 10-12 marks to get a 4, while HL students need around 18-25 marks to get a 7, and around 10-12 marks to get a 4.

IB Business IA Tips: Standard Level (SL)

It is a written commentary on a real business issue/problem faced by a real organization in the past . It is based on 3-5 supporting documents which are secondary sources . These must be printed out and attached to the commentary at the end.

  • Is Tesla’s decision to increase productive capacity by building a new manufacturing plant in Shanghai a sound financial decision?
  • Is including a product line for male customers a profitable decision for Prada?

Supporting documents

Business tools, techniques, theories, use, analysis and evaluation of data.

  • identifying the issue or problem
  • balanced analysis of strengths and weaknesses
  • the final conclusion

SL IA Criteria:

  • Criterion A:

3-5 supporting documents must be relevant to the tile, sufficient to answer the question and provide a range of ideas from different stakeholders.

  • Criterion B:

See above about business tools.

  • Criterion C:

Focus on analysing supporting documents . What is written in other sources should only complement your commentary – IA SL is not a literature review.

  • Criterion D:

Conclusions should include recommendations.

  • Criterion E:

Evaluation should include limitations.

  • Criterion F:

Structure of ideas rather than structure of the document itself – ‘Is your language clear?’, ‘Can the examiner easily understand your ideas?’

  • Criterion G:

No elements should be missing! Follow the structure:

IB Business IA Tips: Higher Level (HL)

It is a research project addressing an issue faced by an organization or a decision to be made in the future . It is mainly based on primary research gathered from the organization investigated. Business tools, theories and concepts should be used to analyse and evaluate, leading to recommendations that will help address the research question. This report must be of practical use to management. HL IA must start with a 500-words Research Proposal & Action Plan that serves planning purposes.

  • Should Tasty Bites Bakery purchase a new delivery truck to cater for customers in the city center?
  • Should Shiny Jewelry stop outsourcing production of gold ornaments in order to increase its profit margins?

Main results & findings

Pay attention to assessment criteria, hl ia criteria:.

Research proposal needs to be appropriate, detailed, clear and focused. No elements should be missing!

Explain reasons for selecting primary sources and primary markets research methods used. Research proposal should say what will be done in the IA.

More than 1 primary research method is required to score 3 marks, ideally have 3 different methods :

(1) Interview

(3) Observation or Focus Group

Company information such as Final Accounts are considered secondary data. The primary sources selected and data collected must be appropriate, varied and sufficient . Interview transcript should be in Appendix.

Use tools, techniques and theories in the main body only to analyse primary data collected. You must show that you understand each tool , e.g. explain selection of forces and weights in Force Field Analysis.

Main Results and Findings should be separated from Analysis and Discussion. In Analysis and Discussion part, explain the business issue/problem, analyse the decision to be made, evaluate arguments for and against this decision, and make judgements.

Conclusions must be consistent with the analysis and evaluation part, and supported by evidence .

Recommendations should be related to the main body and consistent with conclusions. Areas of further study must be in Recommendations , not in Conclusions. Further study must be relevant to the existing investigation.

  • Criterion H:

For the IB Business Management Internal Assessment , you will apply business management tools, techniques and theories to a real business issue or problem and write a research paper that refers to a single business organization, but considers industry wide issues that impact the organization.

Getting Started

Sample letter to local business initial business interview ia template: business management sample research questions, research proposal, the research proposal follows the title page and is a separate document from the written report and should not exceed 500 words. it consists of the following components., research question  , how this research question relates to current company priorities or challenges..

This is not why you are interested in this topic, but rather why the company has an interest in this question. For example, the company is currently focused on improving the quality of their products and your IA (and you show us this using a source) is related to increasing quality. This shows that your work is actually valuable. 

Theoretical Framework

Course sections (i.e. chapters), with specific tools listed and an explanation of how each will help you answer the rq., methodology, the sources of primary and secondary information you will pursue, citing specific names of people you will interview (and why), as well as specific information you will focus on finding., include more than one source of primary data. if you can't do two interviews, you'll likely want to do something like a survey or an observation., anticipated difficulties, explain some possible problems you will likely face, the reasons for these difficulties and how you plan to deal with them., try to go beyond the obvious ones, such as bias and access to information., tell why some of the information you need could be hard to get or unreliable., action plan, include dates and also a section where you show modifications you've made, as you completed your work., this shows that you actually used your action plan during your ia. also, at least one of these modifications should show that you actually learned something (or realized something related to business) and that's why you made the change., this again shows that you were growing as a result of your work --which starts to build the case for criterion i (reflective thinking)., sample research proposal, written report, the written report is the second part of your ia. it follows the research proposal and must use the required format below. title page includes research question, intended audience, ib number, session,  proposal word count, ia word count.   research proposal (with word count)   acknowledgements should recognize any individual and/or organization that made the report possible. customary, but not required.   contents page include information about (and page numbers for): your proposal, all parts of your ia, your appendices.   executive summary from this point onward everything should be written in the past tense. for example, "first the owner was contacted to discuss possible areas of concern..." also, include page numbers. give a very quick (i.e. 1 or 2 sentence) background of the type of company and its situation, give the research question, state the tools used, explain major primary and secondary sources used, explain your major findings, mention a limitation of the findings.   introduction state the company name and explain what the company does (make sure this is really clear), explain one of their current strategic priorities, explain what you are going to research (your rq), explain the sections of the course which are involved, the word count for this section. methodology employed more detail about your procedure --what kinds of primary and secondary sources you used to explore your rq. explain some of the sources of information you used (i.e. 'an interview with x and y and a survey of z'). make it clear you had more than one source of primary data. (very briefly) the benefit of using these sources. the business techniques and tools you used, and (very briefly) the purpose of your business tools. explain how valid and reliable your data collection was. for example, how there may have been room for bias or a limited scope to your research. explain how valid your methods of gathering data were. mention any changes made to your ia approach as the work progressed. there should be several. main results and findings include: a graph of some kind is recommended, a summary of your research, perhaps as a list of a few of the key facts uncovered and their primary or secondary sources. analysis and discussion this is where you j.a.m. for each tool (3 or 4 of them) include: a clear justification of the use of the theory (how it will help answer the rq), make sure you are using the jam structure and that as much of your information as possible is coming through the tools (rather than in paragraph form). the analysis (i.e. swot, etc.), and then the mini-conclusion (linking the findings of the tool to the rq). use at least one financial tool, but this should come after your qualitative tools. in general, qualitative tools (such as swot and pest) come before the quantitative ones (like ratio analysis and decision trees), because the qualitative tools set the scene and provide context for the financials.   conclusion and recommendations pull your mini-conclusions together (synthesize them), make some interesting insights based on them (i.e. pros and cons, short-term vs long-term effects, possible stakeholder conflicts). emphasize everything you've discovered and how it all fits together to answer your rq. include: at least 3 recommendations, at least one additional type of research (or another question to research in the future) which would help ensure the reliability of your findings. to get full marks for your recommendations section (2/2) you need to do this. (a student needs to have identified "areas for further study" for full marks here). make sure everything you write here is supported by your conclusion. the recommendations also don't include any new information.   references and bibliography - at least 2 books (one of these can be the textbook), - at least 2 interviews. if you can only do one interview, then you'll      definitely need another source of primary research --a survey, observation data, focus group data, etc.), - at least 4 internet sources, - at least one source which shows your willingness to go beyond the minimum requirements (i.e. a trade journal, an advanced academic paper, an interview with a competitor).   appendices includes only relevant information that supports or emphasizes what is discussed in the report: transcripts from your interviews, additional analysis you did which didn’t fit in the body of your ia, questionnaire results, details of the calculations you did for your financial tool, any other interesting data which you would like to refer to in the body of your work., business tools/data collection, checklist/rubric, hl ia rubric, ia student checklist, ia examples, hl ia sample a       ( 24 /25 marks) hl ia sample b       ( 21 /25 marks) hl ia sample c       ( 19 /25 marks) hl ia sample d       ( 16 /25 marks).

MARKING THE IA HL

The HL business management research project is assessed against nine criteria that are related to the assessment objectives for the business management course. Criterion A refers to the research proposal, while criteria B-I are used to assess the written report.

Criterion I: Reflective thinking

The analysis section of the IB Business Management Internal Assessment is the single most important section of the IA to get right. What you do here will largely determine the marks you are awarded across THREE interrelated sections of the IA: Criterion B, C and E.

Criterion A: Research proposal - 3 marks

This criterion focuses on the topic, the research question and the methodology. It assesses the explanation of the focus of the research (this includes the topic and the research question), how the research will be undertaken, and how the focus is maintained throughout the essay.

Please note: Criterion A should be used to assess the research proposal only.

This criterion assesses the extent to which the student presents a research proposal that gives an effective direction for the project, with all the required elements.

The work does not reach a standard outlined by the descriptors.

The research proposal is presented but is generally inappropriate, or two or more elements are missing.

The research proposal is generally appropriate but some elements lack clarity, detail and focus, or one element is missing.

The research proposal with all the required elements is appropriate, detailed, clear and focused.

Criterion B: Sources and data - 3 marks

This criterion assesses the extent to which the student selects primary sources and collects data which address an issue or a decision to be made by an organisation or a range of organisations in appropriate depth and breadth.

This criterion also assesses the extent to which the student evaluates his or her arguments and makes judgments that are well substantiated.

Glass industry is one of the largest and most important industries of the country. This industry is divided to several different groups which differ from each other in terms of production process and raw-material combinations. One of these groups is bottles and jars industry and Hamadan Glass Company is placed in this group. This research is a case study of this company and investigates its position in Iran's glass industry. In this paper, the process of formulating strategic planning is presented for this company and the way the proposed strategies are provided and organized is explained by applying strategic planning paradigms and evaluating internal and external environments. In this regard, SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis and QSPM (Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix) were used for producing strategies and their evaluation. At last, the proposed strategies were presented in the order of priority. Introduction Strategic management can be defined as the art and science of formulating, executing and evaluating function decisions which enable organizations to reach their long-term objectives [1]. In fact, strategic management is a process through which organizations can recognize themselves and their surrounding environments and plan, implement and monitor their strategies. Purpose – The majority of research pertaining to internal marketing (IM) is conceptual and still remains so even at present. The lack of widely accepted definitions of the IM concept and a relevant valid measure has lead to increased attempts by academia to investigate the relative concepts and measures. The purpose of this paper is to examine a synthesis of IM and investigates its effect on business performance in a retail context. Design/methodology/approach – The context of this paper is within supermarket chains in Greece with nation wide coverage. A survey is designed and implemented using the branch managers. Findings – SEM analysis indicates five dimensions of the IM construct: formal interaction, reward systems, feedback, internal procedures and policies and internal customer orientation (ICO). Retailers seem to adopt in an embryonic stage a concept of IM. IM indeed has a positive effect on business performance. Research limitations/implications – Single key informant, single context of the paper are considerations when examining research limitations. Practical implications – The embryonic stage of adopting and implementing IM within supermarket chains illustrates a certain manner of managing the internal customer; centralisation of procedures and tactics. Even if the concept of IM is partially exploited, the respective organisational behaviours clearly have a positive impact on both financial and non-financial aspects of retail performance, thus revealing their importance. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the rare empirical investigation of the IM notion in the firm and provides evidence on both its synthesis and its impact on business performance. The authors synthesize the concepts of internal market and ICOs providing a new approach to IM. Construct and research propositions have been axiomatic and in an only conceptual context until recently. Overview: Business Management HL IA

This is an overview of my Business Management HL IA, alongside tips to score well. I received 24/25 from my teacher, and received a moderated mark of 20/25, both 7!

I chose a public limited insurance company (Company X) as my firm. It was dealing with cash flow concerns. My question was: “Should Company X improve their cash flow by strengthening its co-insurance system?”

For Business Management HL IAs, a key component is access to primary data. Therefore, it is best to choose a firm that you have easy access to, in case you need to request company data and interviews. In contrast, Business Management SL IAs primarily use secondary data—which is generally available online—to evaluate firms with an online presence.

Research Proposal

As the first part of the IA isn’t included in the overall word count, the research proposal mainly acts as the planning document for your actual IA. In my proposal, I included:

  • Rationale – explaining a brief overview of the firm and why I chose to analyse it
  • Key Areas of Syllabus – Finance & Accounts and Operations Management
  • Tools – SWOT Analysis, FFA, Profit & Loss Account
  • Sources of Data – Primary, Secondary
  • Anticipated Difficulties + Potential Solutions
  • Action Plan – detailing the action, the date, and a modification column to show changes or additional notes
  • Gantt Chart – visualizing my action plan

Executive Summary (200 words)

Outline the problem that the firm is facing and introduce the primary aim of the investigation by contextualizing the research question. I summarized the findings from the investigation. This includes the use of primary and secondary resources, the key areas of improvement for the firm, the brief overview of the solutions, and the benefits that the firm may reap by implementing these resources. 

Introduction

More detailed overview of Company X (the products they sell, the industry it operates in, and their competitors), followed by their strategic and tactical objectives. As my research question included the term “co-insurance”, which may be unfamiliar, I also explained the definition of the term and its application within the context of the investigation. 

Main Issue in my IA: Company X’s recent implementation of the co-insurance system created several cash flow problems rising from systemic complications. The main focus of the research was to analyse the complications that Company X is facing as the lead insurer in terms of financial and operational aspects.

Methodology

I included a short paragraph outlining the data collection process, which entails:

  • Primary Research – Interviews with Firm Employees (inquiring about qualitative reports and expert evaluations), Focus Group Research, Surveys
  • Secondary Research – Evaluating competitor’s positions through articles, regional business context, evaluating the firm’s financial reports, etc.
  • Briefly reiterating the key areas of syllabus covered (Finance & Accounts/Operations Management)

Main results and findings

Primary research : Summarizing the interview findings, referring to interview transcripts that I inserted in the appendix.

Secondary research : Summarizing findings through research towards main competitors, as well as evaluation of the firm’s financial reports.

Analysis and Discussion

  • SWOT Analysis – Analyses the strengths and weaknesses (internal factors) of the firm’s current standing, as well as the potential opportunities and threats (external factors) that the firm may face.
  • Force Field Analysis – Created a diagram to evaluate the driving forces (forces for change) and restraining forces (forces against change) in the context of implementing the solution proposed in the research question.
  • Profit & Loss Account (for 2017 and 2018 data) – Evaluating the financial standing of the firm to remark on the firm’s suitability in implementing the changes, commenting on the changes in the firm’s financial profits.

TIP : There are various other tools you can use to assist your analysis, including Fishbone (Ishikawa) Diagram, Decision Trees, etc. In my IA, I used a mix of qualitative and quantitative tools to analyse my chosen firm on both an operational and financial standpoint.

Here, I reiterated the focus of the research as well as the methodology used (primary/secondary resources, tools). I also summarized the overall findings from the research I conducted, as well as the final recommendation for the firm in response to the initial research question. For instance, I concluded that “Company X is encouraged to implement the change in the co-insurance system to deal with the cash flow disruption they are experiencing.”

Here, I wrote down the solutions obtained from the analysis of the firm’s situation. For instance, I suggested that:

  • Company X should improve the terms set in their co-insurance contracts, as they have stable financial standing. 
  • Company X should implement the concept of kaizen (a Japanese process of efficiency gains that promotes small and continuous improvements).
  • Constructing a detailed cash flow forecast would enable Company X to identify the sources of inflow/outflow that may need to be further scrutinised for improvement.
  • Company X should implement further quality assurance to increase competitive advantage.

TIP : To strengthen your propositions, justify the solutions by referring back to your analysis and mentioning the potential gains your firm will reap by implementing such a change.

IA Research Questions for first exams 2024

The most important part of the IA in Business Management is of course the research question.  It is important to first consult the IB guide for this course, but here are some of my own tips on how to settle on a good question. If you are a student, you’ll want to ask your teacher for the sections of the subject guide on the IA, and the annual subject report, if they have not already done so.  The subject published every year is a fantastic resource in which the IB team gives specific guidance on strengths and weaknesses that they tended to see in the last exam session’s IAs.  

Most of my students go through multiple rounds of consultation with me before they settle on a question that is viable.  If your question is problematic in any way, a student will likely end up wasting a lot of time and effort pursuing a path that is fruitless or must be significantly altered.  It is therefore much better to spend more time than you want nailing down a good question rather than having to fix it later.  

Should I do a forward-looking or backward-looking question? 

The question can be forward-looking or backward-looking, as long as you remember for backward-looking questions that there is a three-year limit on sources and that the question needs to be evaluative and not simply report and/or analyze what happened.  A student may not use source material that is dated more than three years before their IA submission.  I personally often advise my students that writing a forward-looking IA question is usually easier, giving the question a binary either/or choice for the firm.  However, it is quite possible to do a backward-looking question, and many students evaluate something like how successfully a firm has been able to implement a choice, or to what extent it was the right decision.

Examples of good questions 

Should Nintendo stop making Rated M games and focus on kid-friendly games?

Should Alphabet acquire a smart TV manufacturer?

Should Walmart try to expand the variety of products offered under the Great Value brand?

Will third-party delivery apps be a greater source of revenue for The Bagel than catering to large events?

Should Celtic Crossing consider expanding to a second location in the metro area?

Are Taco Bell’s experimental product campaigns a valid marketing strategy for future expansion in China?

All of these questions narrow the firm’s options down to a clear set of options that can be addressed adequately within the word limit.

"Should" questions 

For most students, I often find that “should” questions end up being the easiest for the students to narrow down their focus into a scenario in which they can apply course tools, techniques, and theories.  It tends to lead to a simple binary choice of “yes or no,” or “Option A or Option B.”

"Can" questions 

This is similar to a “should” question in the sense that the answer is clearly going to be yes or no.  For example, “Can Exxon successfully increase revenues by adding electric car charging ports to its gas stations?”

"To what extent" questions 

Another option is to go with “to what extent.” For instance, to what extent is a product line, marketing campaign, strategy, or so on impacting the firm in a positive way (profitability, competitive advantage, productivity, etc.).   While the conclusion could be a bit more fuzzy than in a “should” question, it’s still pretty straightforward to conclude if the answer is to a limited, moderate, or great extent.

"How Effective" questions 

As long as this addresses an issue that is ongoing and not solely in the past, this can be a good way of evaluating the merits of a firm’s objectives, strategies, tactics, and so on.  For example, “How effective is Gold's Gym's use of social media promotional techniques?”  

What makes a bad question? 

There are many things that can lead to a bad research question, but here are a few things I commonly see in students’ first iteration of their questions: 

Considers too many aspects of the business functions

Is about the industry, not the firm

Requires info that you don’t have access to [for this reason, I highly recommend that students do a publicly traded company so that they can get access to financial info]

Has already been answered

Is very likely to be answered/irrelevant long before you submit your draft

Has an obvious answer

Examples of  unusable q uestions I have seen before 

"Should Nike cut back on advertisement/ marketing money and focus it on new tech products?"

This could work, but so often the student doesn't have a really good idea of what "tech products" they envision Nike getting into.  Nike is a company that mostly sells sporting goods and apparel.  What kind of tech products would they do?  Upon questioning, the student was unable to come up with concrete examples other than NFTs, and they were unable to explain Nike's potential creation of NFTs further.  Students need to have a clearer idea of what they're proposing.

"How did the transgender bathroom policy impact Target's profits?"

I doubt you’re going to be able to prove whether or not it had any impact on their profits; teasing out the cause and effect there is likely to be way too difficult, and you will not have firm data to point to in order to justify a conclusion. This essay will thus be highly speculative.  Also, the way the student has phrased this question, it’s entirely in the past and they're running the danger of writing a report on facts and ahve no true evaluation.  If the student wants to investigate whether this will have an ongoing or future impact on the business, then this should be rephrased.  

"What impact will the recent move of Wilson Sporting Goods' headquarters have on the mobility of jobs within the workforce of the company?"

This is a mouthful.  I’m not entirely sure what the student means by mobility of jobs within the workforce of the company, and the student clearly didn’t either when we chatted.

"How can Wendy's revamp the public's outlook on the service and attitude of the staff?"

Firstly, I generally advise against questions beginning with “how.”  Too often, there are far too many possibilities to explore, so a “how” question is too broad to be covered well within the word count limit. Secondly, the student is assuming that Wendy’s has a problem with the public perception of service and staff attitudes.  In this case, the student was never able to come up with reliable data showing that these were even problems to begin with. 

"Should Amazon invest in private label brands?"

They already are, so this question is irrelevant.

"Should Sony expand its electronics sales into new markets?"

Sony is a huge company, and I don't know what market they could potentially get into that they're not currently in.  Also, does the student mean geographic markets, new product markets, etc?  The student was never really able to answer these questions for me.

"What new features can Spotify add to better compete with Apple Music?"

Maybe this could work if it were more specific, but the student wasn't really able to clearly lay out what options he had in mind.  Consequently, without narrowing it down to specific features or at least types of features, the question was too broad and wasted a lot of the student's time before he switched.

"How can/should " q uestions 

As stated above, I usually advise students against these questions because they very often end up being too vague and broad.  For example, “How can Sony increase its market share in electronics sales?”  There are far too many ways that the firm could potentially do that, so it’s very hard to imagine that the student could effectively answer the question within the word limit.  If a student has a more specific “how” question though, it could be workable.  For instance, “How can Local Firm X reduce its monthly fixed costs?” may be workable because there are not many options to explore for the specific firm in question.

  • Identifying the Problem

The determination of the topics that need to be explored is the first step in the research process. In the case of fundamental research undertaken by academics, a topic of interest or a new field of inquiry is found.

2. Collection of basic literatures

Following the identification of the problem , the following stage is to gather preliminary data/literature that can aid in developing a basic grasp of the problem; in the case of business difficulties consulting, this can aid in understanding the scenario (Saeed et al., 2021).

3. Problem Statement

Although other writers may not have included this step as an explicit step, I believe it is critical to explicitly express the problem. Clearly defining the problem with a statement can give significant benefits. It can assist in generating a clear knowledge of the issue that needs to be handled, as well as clearly spelling out the objectives that must be met in order to solve the problem.

4. Detailed Literature Review

Literature review is an important aspect of academic research since it acts as the heart of the study. It expands research horizons, aids in the development of focus, gives direction, and minimises ambiguity. A literature review entails searching the body of knowledge for relevant literature that will aid in not only identifying but also determining the direction of relationships between variables, as well as in the formulation of hypotheses. It will also be useful in discussions later on in the research (Pereira et al., 2021).

5. Research Hypothesis

A hypothesis is a well-informed estimate; it’s called such since it’s founded on the conceptual framework established in the literature study and theoretical framework . Predictable and testable hypotheses are essential.

6. Methodology

The researcher decides how the research will be carried out at this stage. It is critical that this part provide adequate information to the reader so that he or she may easily reproduce the research in their own situations (Wickert et al., 2021).

Step 7: Collecting data

After deciding on a study approach, the following step is to gather data . Telephonic interviews, individually delivered surveys, postal questionnaires, face-to-face interviews, and observation are all examples of data collection methods.

Step 8: Data Entry and Screening & Cleansing of Data

The first step is to enter the information into any statistical programme that can aid in rapid data analysis . It is critical to review and cleaning of data for any irregularities once it has been submitted; failing to do so will result in inaccurate results.

Step 9: Data Analysis with statistical techniques

The next stage is to conduct proper statistical study based on the study hypothesis after the data has been input and cleaned. To examine the data, a variety of procedures are employed.

Step 10: Interpretation/Presentation of Results

After the data has been processed and the findings have been displayed on the screen, the following step is to analyse the data before presenting it. The interpretation of the results is one of the most important challenges that most studies encounter. The researcher must assess whether the findings are important, whether the hypothesis is correct, and then report the findings in a clear and understandable manner (Johnson et al., 2021).

Step 11: Discussion

The Discussion chapter is the most significant portion of the article and the culmination of the study, but it is often overlooked. The majority of newcomers to research just interpret the findings without discussing them. Reviewing the research findings in light of previous research is part of the discussion. This part entails comparing and contrasting the study findings with those of earlier studies to evaluate if the findings are comparable or conflicting. If they are in conflict, the researcher must determine what is causing the change.

Step 12: Conclusion

A conclusion is the last phase of a research project. It gives a high-level summary of the thesis while highlighting the key areas of debate. This section presents the study findings in a logical order (Nair et al., 2021). When the conclusions agree with the findings of other studies, they might cite references.

The following is the structure of the SL Business Management IA, with what you should include in each section:

While the acknowledgment isn’t included in the word count, it’s an important part of the SL Business Management IA. This part simply shows your gratitude to teachers, students, and anyone else who helped you with your IA. This section is very easy to write and it’s best to keep in short and direct to the point.

The introduction is the section where, according to IB, you set the scene for your SL Business Management Internal Assessment.

Write down the company’s name and explain what it does. Follow this with the research question, and then explain why it’s important to the company you’re currently studying.

Suggested word count: 150

Show how you picked 3 to 5 sources for your SL Business Management IA. Your description should clearly demonstrate that you put enough time and thoughts in the process to bring out a clear range of perspective.

Your methodology has to indicate the part of the course that you’ll use to explore the issue and why such chapters and tools are important. Also, there should be a short but clear explanation of the sources used and why they’re relevant to the research question.

Don’t just mention the reliability of your data. You should also state the weaknesses that your sources have. Also, don’t forget to mention the changes you made if there is any.

Suggested word count: 200

Analysis and Discussion

Use at least 3 or 4 technique to do your analysis and discussion. It’s important to link the tools in the order in which they appear in the analysis to give the readers a clear picture of how the tools are not only related but also useful in answering the research question.

Furthermore, the conclusion in this section should include insights and themes that emerged from your overall analysis and discussion.

Suggested word count: 900

The conclusion of your SL Business Management IA should be as insightful as your analysis. You’re limited to 250 words, and that means you have a very small room to write, so only the most important details should go into this section.

A good conclusion should support your analysis by summarizing your best insights. As with any other type of essay, the conclusion of this assessment shouldn’t introduce new arguments or facts that you haven’t yet addressed in the analysis. More importantly, make sure the conclusion includes a very clear answer to your research question.

Suggested word count: 250

Work Cited 

This section should include all the 3 to 5 sources used. You should cite your work using the MLA format.

You can use additional source for minor information in your work. If you choose to do so, make sure to include those sources in this section as well.

Like Work Cited, this section too doesn’t have word limit. You should include copies of the 3 to 4 supporting documents with their respective labels for easy referencing. Also, you should write down the parts of the supporting document as used in the analysis.

Choosing Sources for Your SL Business Management IA

You will have to choose 3 to 5 secondary sources for the SL Business Management IA. The source you choose for your SL IA in this subject should:

  • Feature different point of views provided they’re relevant to the Business Management issue that you’ve decided to investigate
  • Be recent. The sources you pick should not be more than three years old. If you’re taking your final IB test in May 2022, pick sources written not later than June 2019.

Hi! I am studying Business and Management HL and I'm actually writing my Research proposal for my IA.

The maximum number of words is 500 and I have seen examples that counting the words of all the parts and the action plan of the proposal have more than 500 words.

Does the action plan count for the word count in the research proposal?

you should have three different word counts:

1. Executive summary a.k.a abstract. The maximum word count is 200

2. Research Proposal/Action Plan. The maximum word count is 500

3. Main Essay. The maximum word is 2000

If u exceed the limit IB will down score. One of the assessment criteria (E-value to management) will give u a maximum of one point if you exceed the word count

Structure of a research proposal

A research proposal describes what you will investigate, why it’s important, and how you will conduct your research.

The format of a research proposal varies between fields, but most proposals will contain at least these elements:

Introduction

Literature review.

  • Research design

Reference list

While the sections may vary, the overall objective is always the same. A research proposal serves as a blueprint and guide for your research plan, helping you get organized and feel confident in the path forward you choose to take.

Academics often have to write research proposals to get funding for their projects. As a student, you might have to write a research proposal as part of a grad school application , or prior to starting your thesis or dissertation .

Research proposal length

Writing a research proposal can be quite challenging, but a good starting point could be to look at some examples. We’ve included a few for you below.

Like your dissertation or thesis, the proposal will usually have a title page that includes:

  • The proposed title of your project
  • Your supervisor’s name
  • Your institution and department

The first part of your proposal is the initial pitch for your project. Make sure it succinctly explains what you want to do and why.

Your introduction should:

  • Introduce your topic
  • Give necessary background and context
  • Outline your  problem statement  and research questions

To guide your introduction , include information about:

  • Who could have an interest in the topic (e.g., scientists, policymakers)
  • How much is already known about the topic
  • What is missing from this current knowledge
  • What new insights your research will contribute
  • Why you believe this research is worth doing

As you get started, it’s important to demonstrate that you’re familiar with the most important research on your topic. A strong literature review  shows your reader that your project has a solid foundation in existing knowledge or theory. It also shows that you’re not simply repeating what other people have already done or said, but rather using existing research as a jumping-off point for your own.

In this section, share exactly how your project will contribute to ongoing conversations in the field by:

  • Comparing and contrasting the main theories, methods, and debates
  • Examining the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches
  • Explaining how will you build on, challenge, or synthesize prior scholarship

Following the literature review, restate your main  objectives . This brings the focus back to your own project. Next, your research design or methodology section will describe your overall approach, and the practical steps you will take to answer your research questions.

To finish your proposal on a strong note, explore the potential implications of your research for your field. Emphasize again what you aim to contribute and why it matters.

For example, your results might have implications for:

  • Improving best practices
  • Informing policymaking decisions
  • Strengthening a theory or model
  • Challenging popular or scientific beliefs
  • Creating a basis for future research

Some institutions or funders require a detailed timeline of the project, asking you to forecast what you will do at each stage and how long it may take. While not always required, be sure to check the requirements of your project.

Make sure to check what type of costs the funding body will agree to cover. For each item, include:

  • Justification : why is this cost necessary to complete the research?
  • Source : how did you calculate the amount?

To determine your budget, think about:

  • Travel costs : do you need to go somewhere to collect your data? How will you get there, and how much time will you need? What will you do there (e.g., interviews, archival research)?
  • Materials : do you need access to any tools or technologies?
  • Help : do you need to hire any research assistants for the project? What will they do, and how much will you pay them?

A research aim is a broad statement indicating the general purpose of your research project. It should appear in your introduction at the end of your problem statement , before your research objectives.

Research objectives are more specific than your research aim. They indicate the specific ways you’ll address the overarching aim.

A PhD, which is short for philosophiae doctor (doctor of philosophy in Latin), is the highest university degree that can be obtained. In a PhD, students spend 3–5 years writing a dissertation , which aims to make a significant, original contribution to current knowledge.

A PhD is intended to prepare students for a career as a researcher, whether that be in academia, the public sector, or the private sector.

A master’s is a 1- or 2-year graduate degree that can prepare you for a variety of careers.

All master’s involve graduate-level coursework. Some are research-intensive and intend to prepare students for further study in a PhD; these usually require their students to write a master’s thesis . Others focus on professional training for a specific career.

Critical thinking refers to the ability to evaluate information and to be aware of biases or assumptions, including your own.

Like information literacy , it involves evaluating arguments, identifying and solving problems in an objective and systematic way, and clearly communicating your ideas.

The best way to remember the difference between a research plan and a research proposal is that they have fundamentally different audiences. A research plan helps you, the researcher, organize your thoughts. On the other hand, a dissertation proposal or research proposal aims to convince others (e.g., a supervisor, a funding body, or a dissertation committee) that your research topic is relevant and worthy of being conducted.
