Applications for the Russian Government “Open Doors” Scholarships program are now open for the academic year 2024-2025. The program aims to recruit talented foreign students who would like to enroll in master’s and PhD programs in Russia. You have until December 10th, 2023 to apply.

The Russian Government Scholarships program provides an excellent opportunity for talented international students. It allows them to get early admission to Russian universities without worrying about tuition fees. This program has two parts: one for master’s students and another for Ph.D. students. Both have thorough selection processes to find the best candidates.

For the master’s track , applicants undergo a comprehensive two-round evaluation. The initial round involves a competition where portfolios are meticulously assessed to gauge academic accomplishments, research experience, and other relevant qualifications. In the second round, participants are presented with an engaging problem-solving challenge, enabling them to showcase their analytical and critical thinking abilities.

Meanwhile, the Ph.D. track has three rounds of evaluation. In the first round, they look at your academic and research background, like in the master’s track. Then, you face challenging problem-solving tasks to demonstrate your research and problem-solving abilities. Finally, you get to choose a research supervisor for your Ph.D., similar to a regular Ph.D. application.

Additionally, scholars will receive the benefit of free early admission to a Russian university without the need to take an entrance exam. However, you are responsible for covering all other expenses, such as travel, food, accommodation, communication services, and medical insurance.

It’s worth noting that university accommodation is usually reasonably priced. University dormitories range from 500 RUB (7 USD) to 5,000 RUB (780 USD) per month.

• The second round is a problem-solving challenge. It will be held from January 10 to January 28, 2024.
• In the third round, exclusive to Ph.D. candidates. It will be held from February 28 to March 18, 2024, in the form of online interviews with potential research supervisors.

Participants are required to complete their online registration using the Olympiad registration system between September 15 and December 10, 2023. During this period, participants should create their portfolios by entering the required information and uploading the requested documents into their accounts. It’s important to note that all supporting documents must be submitted in either English or Russian. If they are in another language, translations must be provided in one of the languages recognized by the Olympiad.

Skoltech Scholarship in Russia for Local and International Students

Application for the Skoltech Scholarship in Russia for National and International Students is now open for the 2024-2025 academic year. The scholarship aims to support international students willing to study a Master’s or PhD degree at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) in Russia.

Skoltech is a private research and academic institute located in Moscow. Founded in 2011 with MIT’s collaboration, Skoltech aims to prepare a new generation of researchers and entrepreneurs, with the goal of solving important technological research problems that Russia and the rest of the world may face in the future.

Currently, Skoltech has 136 professors, 143 postdocs and researchers, 202 engineers and technicians and over 1,000 students. As of the end of 2018, the funding for grants and research and development (R&D) contracts exceeded 1 billion rubles and is expected to reach 1.5 billion by the end of 2019. Skoltech operates 5 joint labs with Russian and international technology leaders – Sberbank, Gazprom Neft, Huawei, Oerlikon, and Topcon.

Skoltech Scholarship in Russia Benefits

All applicants are automatically considered for funding (education is free of charge). Therefore, candidates who have successfully passed the admission process and are enrolled at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology will receive a fully funded scholarship that provides the following benefits:

Skoltech Scholarship in Russia Eligibility

To apply for the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology scholarship , must meet the following criteria:

• Master’s programs applicants must have an appropriate Bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, from a recognized university.
• Doctoral programs applicants must have an appropriate Master’s degree, or its equivalent, from a recognized university.
• Applications are open to domestic and international students.
• Applicants must be in the final year of their undergraduate studies or hold a higher education degree ( Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or specialist degree) with a good average point in one of the areas listed above.
• A minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL iBT, 450 on the TOEFL ITP, or 6 on the IELTS is required. The language certificate should be valid for 2 years after the test date.
• A TOEFL or IELTS score is not required if the applicant received a degree at a university where the medium of instruction is English.
• No exceptions are made for the policy above and only TOEFL and IELTS scores are accepted. Skoltech’s institutional code for the TOEFL iBT is 2909 .
• Applicants who do not have a proof of English proficiency may take the English language proficiency test during the Selection Weekend at Skoltech (Check registration step 3 below).
• Submission of a General GRE score is not required for the Skoltech application. However, a high score may enhance your application. Skoltech’s institutional code for the GRE is 1294 .

Note : Skoltech receives more applications than available places. Therefore, meeting the minimum admission requirement does not necessarily guarantee admission . Submission of a general GRE score is not required for the Skoltech application. However, a high score may enhance your application. Students whose primary education is in the humanities, business, or social sciences must have significant training in a field related to one of Skoltech’s programs.

There is no separate application this university scholarship . All admitted Master and PhD students are automatically considered for funding. Therefore, applicants willing to benefit from the Skoltech Scholarship must follow the steps below to get admitted at Skoltech.

Step 1: Application at Skoltech’s online portal

Familiarize yourself with the list of required documents, upload them into the application system as they become ready, and submit your application by the deadline. Please click on the Apply button below, to access the form.

Step 2: Online testing

Every candidate must take an online profile test. You will be notified via email about the specific date and time of your test. Please find sample exams here .

Step 3: Selection

The final admissions stage takes place in Moscow. You have to pass the English test on-site, or present a valid TOEFL certificate and pass an in-person interview. Extra written examinations may be required for certain programs during this time (you will be notified in advance).

Russian Scholarships List

Below is a list of Russian scholarships for students who are interested in studying in Russia.

#1 HSE Gold Funding:

HSE University in Moscow, Russia; is supporting international students by funding their education via their Gold funding program. This scholarship is available for both undergraduate and graduate students. It contains trial tests and the scores of those tests are used in determining what percentage of tuition fee waivers will be offered to the students.

The tuition fee waiver starts at 25% and goes up to 70%. Students are also offered a monthly stipend/grant of 1500 RUB. Students can apply to this funding after getting enrolled in a listed program. The classes are taught in English so the students need to prove their English language proficiency if their first language is not English.

#2 State Ph.D. Positions at MIPT, Russia:

Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology is on the lookout for potential Ph.D. students. The Ph.D. degree program is fully funded and is available for the Russian Nationals. The Ph.D. positions are for a number of faculties but some faculties are offering higher funding than others.

The applicants need to be enrolled in a Ph.D. program to get the funding. The applicants will be required to prove their English language proficiency if the program is taught in English and Russian language proficiency if the program is taught in Russian.

#3 Eastern European University Association Scholarship:

Eastern European University Association via its International Scholarship Foundation is aiming at international students. The scholarship money covers the tuition fee and accommodation charges of those eligible students who have been enrolled in an undergraduate program at any university in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine.

The scholarship is available for specified courses and undergraduate programs of recognized universities. Students will have to prove their language proficiency in the intended program.

EEUA is a not for profit organization that seeks to support brilliant students from all across the world so that they can pursue their higher education in Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine.

#4 NRU Scholarship:

National Research University’s Higher School of Economics is offering scholarships to international students who are enrolled in a master’s program.

The scholarship supports up to 70% of the tuition fee and is open for 17 of the master’s programs in NRU HSE. The minimum coverage is 25% of the tuition fee. The winners of the scholarship will also get a monthly allowance of 1500 rubles.

NRU is one of the most innovative and competitive universities in Russia. The sponsorship is offered in programs like business, law, finance, big data, management, economics, etc.

#5 Open Doors Russian Scholarship:

Ministry of Education and science of the Russian Federation along with Global Universities’ Association is giving out Open Doors scholarships to international students. The Scholarships are given on the basis of a competition known as Open Doors Olympiad or Open Doors Academic Competition. The winners get a chance to earn a master’s degree in one of the most prestigious universities in Russia. 

The scholarship winners will get a 100% tuition fee waiver and there are more than 300 awardees. Only international students are invited to apply and the subjects offered are Biology, Computer Science, AI, IR, Business, Management, Linguistics, Physics, Psychology, Chemistry, Technology, Engineering, and Economics.

#6 EMAS Scholarships:

Every month Eurasian Management and Administration School, Russia is offering 50 scholarships to eligible students to study MBA or Executive MBA. The scholarships are available for both online and on-campus modes. The scholarship grant is based on how well the applicant performs in the scholarship test. 

Several subject areas are affiliated with this scholarship such as marketing, finance, healthcare, management (strategic and general management). There is no need to prove English language proficiency even for the programs taught in English. However, a sufficient grip on the language is necessary in order to secure enrollment and scholarship.

#7 Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Russia, Scholarship:

Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, also known as Skoltech is offering Ph.D. and master’s scholarships to international students. The scholarship is available for several fields like Mechanics, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Space systems, Physics, Petroleum Engineering, Life Sciences, etc. Skoltech is affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is one of the leading science and technology institutes in Russia. The scholarship grant for MSc covers the full tuition, offers a basic stipend of 40k to 55k rubles, and also has monthly insurance.

The scholarship grant for Ph.D. offers a tuition fee waiver, gives a stipend of 85k to 105k rubles and medical insurance. The number of awards for MSc positions is 320 and for Ph.D. is 95. The duration for masters is 2 years and for Ph.D. is 4 years.

#8 Siberian Federal University Scholarship in Russia:

Siberian Federal University (SibFU) has opened up Ph.D. positions for a number of its doctoral programs. These programs are taught in English and are fully funded for both local and international students. The Ph.D. programs available are in the areas of Quantum Chemistry, Biophysics, Optics, Urban Design and Planning, Metal Forming, and Multidimensional Complex Analysis.

#9 Finance and Economics Scholarship at ICEF HSE:

International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF) of Higher School of Economics, Moscow is offering undergraduate scholarships to outstanding students. • Admissible Criteria: Applicants must have a completed Master’s degree in political science, communication sciences, science and technology studies, media studies, international relations, European studies, or a related field. Candidates must demonstrate excellent research skills, a cooperative attitude, enthusiasm for communicating academic research, and proficiency in English. Knowledge of Russian and/or Chinese is desirable.
