Nursing and Midwifery

Doctorate by research.

  • Qualification Doctor of Philosophy - Nursing and Midwifery

The Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) Code indicates a registered program offered to international students studying in Australia on student visas.

The Curtin campuses or teaching locations where units of this course are offered.

As a doctoral research degree candidate, you will uncover new knowledge either by the discovery of new facts, the formulation of theories or the innovative reinterpretation of known data and established ideas. Your research will use an in-depth understanding of theories and concepts to develop practical solutions for real-world problems.

A higher degree by research differs from other postgraduate degrees in that at least two-thirds of the study program must involve research. Although some coursework units may be required, the main part of your work will be in the form of a thesis written under the guidance of a supervisor and associate supervisor(s). Your thesis must, in the opinion of the examiners, be a substantial original contribution to the knowledge or understanding of any field through the discovery of new facts, the formulation of theories or the innovative reinterpretation of known data and established ideas. It must also demonstrate your capacity to conceive, design and complete independent research.

Throughout your studies, our faculties will provide you with access to equipment and resources to support your research, and financial assistance to attend appropriate local and international conferences.

Doctor of Nursing

Are you an experienced professional with an ambition to be at the forefront of your field? The University of Notre Dame Australia is dedicated to building a strong and innovative research culture. The Doctor of Nursing offers an applied three-year program to suitably qualified individuals, leading to a thesis of approximately 80,000 words. Your thesis should bridge the theory-practice gap and practically contribute to industry-based or professional knowledge. Make the most of your career today.

Why study this program?

The Professional Doctorate is a research degree designed to meet the needs of professionals who aspire to achieve academic excellence and lead the development of knowledge within their profession. The program seeks to examine crucial professional topics and integrate professional experience with scholarly inquiry.

In particular, it aims to generate a research-based approach, providing answers to questions relevant to the professions or industry and encouraging a systematic way of collecting, analysing and interpreting data. For this reason, we recommend you seek the support of a relevant professional body, employer or industry group in defining your research area.

Program summary

The Professional Doctorate comprises coursework and a substantial research component leading to the submission of a thesis. The coursework component includes four compulsory research training courses to be completed as a prerequisite to your individual research project.

  • RSCH7000 Quantitative Research Methods
  • RSCH7001 Qualitative Research Methods
  • RSCH7002 Scholarly Reading and Writing
  • RSCH7003 Developing a Research Proposal
  • RSCH7027 Supervised Research - Nursing

The coursework will provide opportunities for you to formulate substantial elements of your planned research (e.g. topic refinement, identification and justification of the preferred research method(s), preparation of a draft proposal), and to develop personal competencies in critical analysis and scholarly writing relevant to your profession.

The completion of the coursework is facilitated by a course delivery schedule which takes into consideration that you may also be in employment during your candidature.

Full details of the program are contained in the Program Requirements .

More information regarding courses can be found at the course descriptions pages  Fremantle Sydney .

Supervision

As a doctoral candidate, you are required to have a minimum of two supervisors who will provide support and academic guidance throughout your degree. Your academic supervisors will be complemented by a professional mentor, who has expertise in the industry or profession relevant to your research area.

Your supervisors and professional mentors will assist you with the preparation of your research proposal, continuing to mentor and direct you throughout the research phase and through the process of examination.

Mode of study and assessment

You may undertake the program either in a full-time or part-time capacity. The standard time for completion (not including periods of approved leave of absence) will normally be three years for a full-time student and six years for a part-time student.

The assessment of the coursework component consists of written assignments while the research component is assessed by examination of the thesis by three external reviewers.

Entry requirements

The Pro Vice Chancellor-Research, on the advice of the Dean of the School, determines admission to the Doctor of Nursing Award.

Applicants to the doctoral program are expected to satisfy the following criteria:

  • Possession of a research Masters degree by thesis or dissertation appropriate to the professional field of the applicant; or
  • Possession of a Masters degree by coursework appropriate to the professional field of the applicant completed at a superior standard; or
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree with Honours (typically 1st Class or Class 2A Honours level or equivalent); or
  • Possession of a Master of Philosophy; or
  • In exceptional circumstances, an equivalent academic or professional background that is considered by the Dean of the School to be an appropriate preparation for independent study and research work at doctoral level.

An applicant may be required to satisfy the Dean of the School of the ability to understand and communicate in both written and spoken English at a level adequate for the purpose of pursuing the program of study. In addition to the academic criteria listed above, applicants are normally expected to satisfy the following:

  • have a minimum of 3 years of relevant professional practice;
  • have the support of an industry or professional mentor.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Doctor of Nursing graduates will be able to:

  • Apply expert, specialised cognitive and technical skills in the design and execution of a substantial research project that makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge, professional practice and/or creative practice
  • Synthesise, evaluate, and critically analyse a substantial and complex body of knowledge and/or practice at the frontier of a field/s of research
  • Communicate research findings clearly and fluently, to both peers and the community

Frequently asked questions

Nursing and midwifery are both extremely rewarding professions with varied career outcomes. Some midwives are also nurses and some nurses are also midwives. But they are different professions and require different sets of skills, training and experience.

Nursing offers diverse opportunities in many areas including clinical, management, research and education.

Midwifery focuses on the health and wellbeing of women before, during and after childbirth. It’s a broad and varied role, like nursing, that has many career prospects depending on your interests.

A Registered Nurse (RN) undertakes a three-year University Bachelor of Nursing degree in comparison to an enrolled nurse who completes a Diploma of Nursing via the Vocational Education Training sector which is 2 years duration.

Both an RN and EN provide direct patient care. The scope of practice for an RN is more extensive than an EN and an RN is responsible and accountable for all care delivered that is delegated to an Enrolled Nurse.

Preregistration means the period during which a Bachelor of Nursing student is undertaking a course of study leading to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia

Our flexible study options facilitate part time options, and some topics are offered either face to face or online. On campus attendance is not mandatory, with the exception of clinical intensives and placements.

Yes you need to be on campus for practicals (intensives) which are 4 days in the Laboratory prior to undertaking placement.

Health is a growing industry overall in Australia. According to the National Skills Commission (2022), midwives will experience a 21.6% increase in jobs growth, while nursing is set to experience a 13.9% jobs boost.

The 2022 ATAR for Midwifery was 96.65 and the 2022 ATAR for Nursing was 70.40.

Yes. You will complete a range of field placements at public and private hospitals across metropolitan and rural areas. Throughout the degree you will experience clinical placements in many areas of midwifery practice such as antenatal, birthing, postnatal, gynaecology, community midwifery, and neonatal special care. These will take place across metropolitan, regional and rural hospitals and health services in South Australia.

Yes. Midwifery students are required to follow women throughout their antenatal, birth, and postnatal journey. Pre-registration students will have a minimum of 15 CoCE experiences throughout the degree, whereas post-registration (registered nurse) students will have a minimum of 10 CoCE experiences.

No, you will not need to be on call for placements. Placements blocks range between 1 – 6 weeks and are scheduled at different times throughout the year. You will be rostered across all shifts over a 7-day week roster.

Yes, you will be required to be on call to successfully complete your CoCE.  You will need to be available when the women are giving birth, which could be at any time, day or night. It is a requirement that you are available to be on call for the labour and birth for these women, equivalent to at least five times a year for each year of your degree.

Yes. Placements for nursing may occur at any time of the year and will include shift work (including night shift and public holidays) across a seven-day week roster. It’s recommended that you do not book holidays or make travel arrangements until your placement has been confirmed on InPlace. Placements occur in a full-time block format attended over several weeks. Placement topics in the Bachelor of Nursing program range from 2 to 8 weeks in length.

Placements will be undertaken across a range of locations, where care is provided to patients / consumers / clients / residents across the life span. This includes aged care, rural and remote and acute care locations such as hospitals.

If you are studying full-time (18 units per semester), you would normally need to spend about two-and-a-half to three days on campus to attend compulsory classes such as laboratories, tutorials, and workshops.

No, Undergraduate nursing and midwifery students do not get paid for placement.

No, nursing is not run within the normal university semester. Students are expected to be available all year round.

A driver's licence is essential as public transport is not always available for shift work, CoCE appointments and rural placements.

Our University

Since opening in 1975, Griffith has grown from one campus and 451 students to become a comprehensive, multi-campus institution, with 50,000 students and more than 200,000 graduates.

Griffith was created to be a different kind of university—one that challenges convention, adapts and innovates, creates bold new trends and pioneers solutions ahead of their time. Today, we are known for our high-impact research, outstanding student experience, commitment to social justice and our welcoming environment, and rank among the top 2 per cent of universities worldwide.

For over 40 years, we have been deeply connected to the Asia-Pacific, socially conscious and environmentally aware. We introduced Australia’s first degrees in a range of important areas, including modern Asian studies and environmental science, and we are a recognised leader in online education, having offered award-winning online programs for nearly 20 years.

We also understand that education isn’t static—on the contrary, we know that new forms of teaching and learning will be needed in future to help people build the skills necessary to thrive in uncertain times. That’s why our high-quality degrees are specifically designed to prepare students for the future, developed in consultation with industry, based on cutting-edge research, and taught by some of Australia’s most highly awarded teachers.

We’ve never lost sight of our progressive beginnings, and everything we do—from education to research and community engagement—is designed to not only meet but improve the new world our students, graduates and communities will encounter, and create a more just and equitable future for everyone.

She is 36, has a PhD and is heading to the Olympics to compete in breakdancing

By jane rocca, save articles for later.

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them any time.

In a hip new move to bring younger audiences to the games, the International Olympics Committee has introduced breaking to Paris 2024. For Rachael Gunn, a breakdancer and academic with a PhD in cultural studies, it is her chance to represent Australia next month.

Gunn, 36, who goes by the street name B-Girl Raygun, is leaning into the unique opportunity to put her skills to the test. She’s putting her own stamp on the sport and hopes to encourage other women to follow in her spinning footsteps.

How did you get into breaking?

I initially started as most girls do, doing jazz and tap dancing. I even tried hip-hop for a while, but none of them quite did it for me. It wasn’t until after I finished high school and met my boyfriend [Samuel Free, now her husband] at university in Sydney in 2008. He introduced me to the subculture and I became really curious about it.

What was it like getting into the scene?

The scene is dominated by guys, and no matter how many training sessions I went to in those days, it was always filled with men. I think that’s changing, but it’s still male-dominated. Sam tried to teach me some moves, and I initially found it really difficult because I had a background in dance choreography, where the whole class learns the same routine. This was completely different. I was overwhelmed and would go to the bathrooms and cry, feeling freaked out trying to do what Sam taught me in front of other guys. I got the foundational moves eventually – things like a six-step, a baby freeze and a CC – but it took years. At first, I didn’t have the physical strength to do a stab freeze. What I discovered, though, is that those who didn’t fit into mainstream culture in Australia and wanted to dance found their way to breaking.

When did theory and practice cross paths for you?

It was at a competition in Melbourne in 2011. I had just signed up to do my PhD, but also wanted to train more as a breaker. Through my PhD, I became interested in how my embodied experience of breaking helped me understand and challenge some deeper assumptions about gender stereotypes.

Does age matter in breaking?

I can’t help but think about my age in this competition, but I also try not to think about it too much. I am constantly reminded of it, but I’m also aware that people who are older than me are doing amazing things. For example, a 39-year-old won a world final in 2023. Judges aren’t looking at how many head spins you can do in a minute. It’s not about raw speed; there are many things you have to consider when competing. Your maturity in understanding the roots of breaking can be a real advantage. It’s about observing what’s come before and leaning into those historical roots without plagiarising.

When did you first learn breaking would become an Olympic sport?

The rumours began to swirl in 2016/17. The sport was a huge success when included in the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in 2018. The Australian Federation was only set up in 2019, but it didn’t automatically mean someone from Oceania would get to compete. I was training harder than ever and thinking, “It’s now or never. Go for it.”

How do you handle nerves on competition day?

I like to stay focused. If I’m having a conversation with someone, I quickly realise when I am getting too distracted and leave. I like to go through my combos in my head. It’s loosely structured, so you have to come prepared with a combination of moves and small routines. They key is the way you string them together – that is the freestyle part. You have to listen to the music the DJ is playing all day to get in the zone and make sure you have that confidence in yourself that no matter what happens you’ve got this.

What does your diet consist of on competition day?

I try to eat first thing in the morning because I know that’s the only full meal I’ll eat all day. For me, it’s eggs, toast, mushrooms and salad. Carbohydrates are important for breaking because of that explosive energy you need, so I’ll be snacking on carbs and a protein bar.

Do the students you lecture at Macquarie University know that you’re Paris bound?

Yes. I have done lectures on breaking and spoken about the Olympics and some students have come up and asked for an autograph. Others have told me they’ll be watching and cheering me on, which is really special.

Which b-girls who inspire you?

When I started learning breaking, I was obsessed with B-Girl Ayumi from Japan. I did a workshop with her in 2013, and she has always been encouraging and supportive. She is still breaking and will be in the Olympic Qualifier series – she could make the competition at the age of 40. She made a name for herself when there weren’t a lot of women who would compete with guys. There’s also B-Girl AT from Finland, who is very cool.

What has your PhD research taught you about breaking?

A huge part of my journey as a competitor and academic is learning the history of breaking, of the culture here in Australia and globally. I spent a lot of time looking at old footage of the iconic scene in Flashdance in the 1980s that inspired a lot of people to start breaking around the world. Other movies like Beat Street and Wild Style were also key. I also loved watching video clips of the Rock Steady Crew and their only female breaker, Baby Love, who was iconic in inspiring the b-girl movement – the baby step is named after her. The Rock Steady Crew even judged a competition on Countdown in the 1980s when they visited Australia.

I did my undergraduate degree in contemporary music and cultural studies and after my honours year I didn’t know what to do. I worked as a receptionist for a while, but decided I loved studying and went back to do my PhD. Dance and music are big parts of my life and looking at the intersection of those appealed. There was some research on Australia’s hip-hop culture in late ’90s early 2000s, but I saw a gap I could address.

Your husband is your coach. How does that work out?

It makes total sense – he’s the one who got me into breaking, and we sometimes enter competitions together. Nobody knows me better. He’s got my back and knows how much this means to me.

What do you usually wear when you perform?

I wear baggy jeans and a baggy T-shirt. I like the heaviness they bring. Maybe it’s my background in hip-hop, but having weight closer to the ground works for me, gets me in the right headspace. I love baggy clothes even when I am not competing. Sorry, Mum.
