How to Share Audio on Zoom

Break the monotony of boring meetings

Author avatar

When you’re sharing your screen with others in a Zoom meeting , your computer’s audio is muted by default. Zoom allows you to use screen sharing to share audio with other people. This is useful if you want to watch a YouTube video with others or if you wish to play music during a break in the meeting.

If you’ve never done this before, this tutorial will show you how to share audio on Zoom. We’ll also cover how to show YouTube videos with audio to other Zoom meeting participants, and how to share music from Spotify with your audience.

How to Use Screen Sharing to Share Computer Sound on Zoom for Windows or Mac

To share computer audio on a Zoom call, you’ll need to open the app and start a new meeting. You don’t need any other participants to begin sharing your computer’s sound in Zoom. This can easily be set up before anyone else joins using Zoom’s screen sharing feature. The steps to use this feature are similar on Zoom for Windows and Mac.

Once you’ve started a new Zoom meeting, click the green Share Screen button in the meeting toolbar, located in the lower half of the window. As the name suggests, this is used for screen sharing on Zoom, but you need to enable another option each time you want to share your computer’s sound.

You can now click the checkbox next to the Share sound button in the bottom-left corner of the window. This will ensure that audio from your computer will be included when you share your screen. Select the app you want to share audio from and when you’re ready to begin sharing, click the blue Share button in the bottom-right corner of this window.

How to Adjust the Sound Quality of Audio Shared Using Screen Sharing

Zoom allows you to share computer sound in mono and stereo quality. Since the Zoom app optimizes its settings to preserve bandwidth, the default for audio shared using the screen sharing feature is mono. If you don’t like that, you can share higher-quality audio with the participants in your Zoom meeting.

To achieve this, start a Zoom meeting and click the Share Screen button. This will open the screen share window, where you can select the tiny down-arrow next to the Share sound button. You’ll see a drop-down menu with two options. To share higher quality sound from your computer, select Stereo (High-fidelity) . Click the checkbox next to the Share sound button to enable sharing computer sound on Zoom.

How to Share Audio From a YouTube Video on Zoom

When you’re using Zoom to teach or for a presentation, you might want to consider watching YouTube videos with your audience. You can easily do this by combining screen sharing with Zoom’s share audio feature.

To do this, first, you should open the YouTube video on your computer. If you’ve opened the video in a browser, then ensure that the active tab has the video you want to show using screen sharing. If it’s open in a background tab, you’ll have to make an extra click, when you’re screen sharing, to open the video. You can avoid this by keeping the video in the foreground right at the beginning.

Then open Zoom, start a new meeting and press the Share Screen button. When you see the screen share window, select the YouTube video from the list of tiles and check the Share sound option.

Finally, you can click the Share button to begin watching the YouTube video with your Zoom audience through screen sharing. The video will begin once you hit the play button on YouTube.

How to Share Audio From Spotify on Zoom Via Screen Sharing

A relaxing instrumental song can act as a nice filler when you’re waiting for some participants to join the meeting, or when you’re taking a short break during a long Zoom meeting. You can use the screen sharing feature to share audio on Zoom via Spotify as well.

To accomplish this, open Spotify on your computer and find the song you want to play. You can then start a meeting on Zoom, hit the Share Screen button, and select Spotify from the list of tiles. You should remember to check the Share audio button in the bottom-left corner and then click the Share button in the bottom-right corner to begin screen sharing.

Lastly, you can click the play button in Spotify on your computer to share the song via Zoom.

How To Share Audio on Zoom for iPhone and iPad

You can use the Zoom screen sharing feature to share audio from your iPhone or iPad too. This is quite easy to enable because the moment you start sharing your screen, device audio from your Apple device is automatically shared with those who are in the Zoom meeting.

On Android too, the Zoom screen sharing feature allows you to share audio from your device with other participants in the meeting. The only difference is that audio sharing is turned off by default on Zoom for Android. If you want to share your phone’s audio with others in the Zoom meeting, then open Zoom on Android and start a new meeting.

Once the meeting has begun, tap the green Share button located in the middle of the bottom toolbar. Scroll down a little bit and tap Screen . This will begin screen sharing on Zoom on your Android phone. By default, Zoom takes you to your home screen and shows a floating toolbar that has an option labeled Share Audio: Off . Tap this option once to change it to Share Audio: On .

How to screen share a powerpoint presentation in zoom.

Giving a presentation over Zoom? No biggie. You can easily present your slideshow by using the screen share feature. Here's how.

Quick Links

Grant access to share screens in zoom, screen share a powerpoint presentation in zoom.

No matter where you work, meetings all have one thing in common: PowerPoint presentations. If you use Zoom, you can easily present your slideshow to the participants by sharing your screen . Here's how it's done.

If you're the host of the Zoom meeting , you'll be able to share your screen without issue. However, if you're joining a meeting that you aren't the host of, you may need to request permission from the host to be able to share your screen.

As a general rule, we recommend that hosts disable the screen-share feature for participants by default for security reasons . If you aren't the host of the meeting, be sure to reach out to the host in advance to request permission to share your screen during the Zoom call. Hosts can always enable the feature during the call, but it's always good to be a step ahead.

If you're the host of the meeting and someone is requesting permission to share their screen during the meeting, click the up arrow next to "Share Screen" at the bottom of the window.

In the menu that appears, click "Advanced Sharing Options."

The "Advanced Sharing Options" window will appear. In the "Who Can Share" section, click the bubble next to "All Participants."

All participants in the meeting can now share their screen.

To screen share your PowerPoint presentation, go ahead and open the PowerPoint presentation that you would like to present. However, before you put the presentation in Slide Show view, you'll want to share your screen. At the bottom of the Zoom meeting window, click "Share Screen."

If you're using a single monitor, you will immediately start sharing your screen. If you're using dual monitors , you'll need to click the screen that your presentation will be shared on. In our case, that will be "Screen 2."

To begin sharing that screen, click "Share" at the bottom-right corner of the screen select window.

You're now sharing your screen. Now, in Microsoft PowerPoint, select the "Slide Show View" icon in the bottom-right corner of the application.

From here, deliver your presentation as though you were standing in front of a live audience.

If you are giving a big presentation through Zoom, you're not going to just jump straight into it. You may need to speak to the audience a bit before sharing your screen. If so, here are a few tips on how to look better on your Zoom call .

Introduction:

Zoom has become an essential tool for remote communication, work, and education. One of its useful features is the ability to share audio during a meeting or a presentation. Sharing audio might seem complicated at first, but with these five simple steps, you can easily share audio with your fellow attendees.

Step 1: Join or Start a Zoom Meeting

To get started, you need to join or host a Zoom meeting. To do this, simply open the Zoom app on your computer or mobile device, sign in, and either click “Join” to enter the meeting ID and password or click “Schedule” or “Host” to create a new meeting.

Step 2: Set Up Your Audio Preferences

Before sharing audio, it’s crucial to ensure that your microphone and speakers are set up correctly. Go to the Zoom settings (the gear icon) and select the “Audio” tab. Choose the correct microphone and speaker devices from the dropdown menus and test them using the “Test Speaker” and “Test Mic” buttons.

That’s it. Now you’re sharing your screen for Zoom meeting participants with the audio from your computer playing. Everyone on the Zoom call will be able to hear your video.

This process simultaneously shares your screen and computer audio along with the audio from your mic. You can also choose to mute yourself while screen sharing. The computer audio will continue playing, but the Zoom meeting participants won’t be able to hear you if you speak.

Now you know how to screen share on the Zoom app with audio from your PC or iOS desktop or laptop. But what happens if you connect to a Zoom meeting from your phone? Screen sharing with audio from your iPhone or Android Zoom app is actually even easier.

Give your Zoom meeting a little something extra:  Use one of Biteable’s  Zoom backgrounds  for a little extra something-something during your next Zoom meeting. We recommend:

You’ll need the  Zoom app  to share your screen with audio from your phone. Get this if you don’t already have it, then start or join your Zoom meeting.

If you haven’t shared a screen in Zoom from your phone before, keep in mind you won’t be able to select a desktop or window to share. Zoom just shares whatever is on your screen, so you may need to do a little prep work to make sure there’s nothing sensitive open.

It’s also wise to turn on Do Not Disturb while you’re screen sharing from your phone. That way, notifications won’t pop up during your screen share.

Open the app you want to share

Once you’re finished, you can return to Zoom by tapping the Zoom app icon, then tap the  Stop Share  button in Zoom to stop screen sharing.

Or stop screen sharing by tapping the  red timer icon  at the top of your screen.

Once you stop sharing your screen, the icon at the top of your screen will turn green. You can tap it again to return to the Zoom meeting.

Playing music during a Zoom meeting

Playing music during a Zoom meeting might have limited application, but it’s handy for meetings where you have long periods of silence like Zoom classes or to spice up fun Zoom events like  ice breaker games .

To play music during a Zoom meeting, begin with the same steps you used to share your screen with audio on the Zoom app. Choose to share your main desktop, then open your music player and play your music while sharing your screen with the computer audio enabled.

That’s all for sharing your screen in Zoom with sound. But there’s one more tweak you can make (and help your friends make) to give the best Zoom screen sharing experience possible.

Side-by-side screen sharing on the Zoom app

You won’t notice side-by-side screen sharing when you’re sharing your own screen. But if someone else in your Zoom meeting shares their screen, side-by-side mode can be a better layout for you.

With side-by-side screen sharing in Zoom, you’ll see the person’s screen next to their camera view. That way you can see who’s talking while they present what’s on their screen.

Just pop into the Zoom app settings, go to the Share Screen settings, and check the box to enable side-by-side sharing.

Tips for Sharing Audio on Zoom Successfully

Sharing audio on Zoom can greatly enhance your virtual meetings and presentations. To ensure a successful audio sharing experience, consider the following tips:

  • Test your audio setup beforehand: Before the meeting or presentation, test your audio setup to ensure everything is working correctly. Make sure your speakers or headphones are connected and functioning properly. Check the volume levels and adjust them accordingly.
  • Use a high-quality microphone: If you’re the one sharing the audio, using a high-quality microphone can greatly improve the audio clarity for participants. Consider investing in a dedicated microphone to provide clear, professional-grade audio.
  • Optimize your internet connection: A stable and fast internet connection is essential for smooth audio sharing. Connect to a reliable network and ensure you have sufficient bandwidth to handle the audio streaming. Close any unnecessary applications or browser tabs that might consume bandwidth.
  • Close unnecessary applications: To minimize any potential disruptions or audio interference, close any unnecessary applications or programs on your computer. This helps to allocate more resources to the audio sharing process and reduces the chances of audio lag or glitches.
  • Communicate with participants: Inform participants in advance if you plan to share audio during the meeting. This allows them to adjust their audio settings accordingly and ensures everyone is prepared for audio playback. Consider providing instructions on how to optimize audio settings for the best experience.
  • Check copyright permissions: If you plan on sharing copyrighted audio content, make sure you have the necessary permissions to do so. Avoid sharing copyrighted music or audio tracks without proper authorization to avoid any legal issues.
  • Close notifications and system sounds: To avoid unnecessary interruptions, close any notification sounds or system sounds on your computer. These sounds can be distracting to both you and the meeting participants.
  • Rehearse and prepare: If you’re presenting audio during a meeting, rehearse your audio sharing beforehand. Familiarize yourself with the content and ensure that it plays smoothly. Have a backup plan in case of any technical difficulties.

By following these tips, you can enhance the audio sharing experience on Zoom and ensure that everyone enjoys seamless audio playback during your meetings or presentations. Now, let’s address some common issues that you may encounter and provide troubleshooting suggestions.

Troubleshooting Common Issues with Sharing Audio on Zoom

While sharing audio on Zoom is usually a seamless experience, there may be occasions when you encounter technical issues. Here are some common problems and their potential solutions:

  • Audio not being shared: If the audio is not being shared, double-check that you have enabled the “Share computer sound” option before initiating the screen sharing. If the issue persists, try restarting the Zoom application and ensuring that your audio settings are properly configured.
  • Poor audio quality: If the audio quality is poor or distorted during the sharing process, make sure you have a stable internet connection. Consider using a wired internet connection instead of Wi-Fi, as it provides a more reliable and consistent connection. Additionally, close any bandwidth-intensive applications or processes that may be slowing down your internet speed.
  • No sound during playback: If there is no sound during the audio playback, check your computer’s audio settings to ensure that the correct audio output device is selected. Consider restarting your computer and reopening the Zoom application to resolve any potential software glitches that may be causing the issue.
  • Audio lag or delay: If there is noticeable audio lag or delay during the sharing process, it is likely due to network latency. Close any unnecessary applications or browser tabs that may be using up bandwidth and causing network congestion. If possible, connect to a wired internet connection for a more stable and consistent network experience.
  • Audio playback interruptions: If the audio playback is interrupted or keeps buffering, it could be due to insufficient network bandwidth. Lowering the screen resolution or minimizing other bandwidth-heavy activities can help improve the audio playback performance. If the issue persists, contact your internet service provider to ensure you have sufficient bandwidth for smooth audio sharing.
  • Participants unable to hear audio: If participants in the meeting are unable to hear the shared audio, check that the meeting host has enabled the “Allow participants to share computer sound” option in the meeting settings. Additionally, ensure that participants have their audio settings properly configured and their speakers or headphones connected and functioning correctly.

If these troubleshooting tips do not resolve your audio sharing issues, consider reaching out to Zoom support for further assistance. They have a dedicated team available to help you troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues you may encounter during the audio sharing process.

PowerPoint: How to Add Audio to Powerpoint on Windows 10 and Mac

Last Updated Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 5:00 am

Known Issue (August 14, 2023):

Some Windows 11 users are experiencing issues with PowerPoint exports when they are turned into .mp4 files. Visuals within the exported PowerPoint are appearing as flipped, or upside down. We are working with Microsoft to find a solution.

As a workaround, please convert the file as a .WMV file option and save it in My Media.  The following are directions on how to convert a PowerPoint Presentation with audio to a .WMV file . For more support or to help troubleshoot issues, please reach out to the LTS Help Desk at [email protected]

Microsoft PowerPoint offers features to record audio narration and export it as a video. PowerPoint records audio slide-by-slide rather than in one continuous file, allowing creators to easily re-record a slide if they make a mistake or need to change something later. Exporting as a video and uploading to Kaltura or Canvas for streaming is advantageous since it standardizes file types, doesn't require a download to view, is in a format that can be captioned, and allows viewers to navigate more efficiently.

A recent update has made the process comparable on a Mac, but the specifics vary. Windows 10 instructions follow; Mac users can click the link below to jump to the appropriate instructions.

  • Instructions for Mac users

Windows 10 Instructions:

The following instructions explain how to add audio to your PowerPoint presentation on Windows 10 and export that PowerPoint as an MP4. The text instructions cover the same information as the embedded video below.

NOTE: If you have an older version of PowerPoint, you may need to update it to access the features described below. If you do not have PowerPoint, you can download it and other Microsoft Office products for free by going to office365.uwec.edu. If you have questions about updating or installing PowerPoint, contact the LTS Help Desk at [email protected] or 715-836-5711.

  • Design your PowerPoint TIP: Use images and limit text to better engage viewers/listeners.

Click slideshow tab and record slideshow to record audio narration.

  • Click Record Slide Show NOTE:  Audio may start recording automatically if you have an older version of PowerPoint. It will still work, but this version offers reduced functionality.

Click slideshow tab and either record from current slide or record from the beginning

  • Record narration and avoid reading text on the slide out loud to viewers. Click the blue Replay button to listen to the recorded audio and ensure it was recording.

Advance Narration on PC

  • Press [Escape] or the ‘X’ button located in the top right of the screen when the audio recordings are finished. You will see a speaker icon on slides that have audio.

Click File

  • Select Export  (steps 10-14 are shown in screenshot below).
  • Select Create a Video .
  • Optional: Select Full HD (1080p) for the video quality; it is unlikely a higher quality is needed.
  • Select Use Recorded Timings and Narrations.

Create a video

  • Follow prompt/pop-up window to save the video in a memorable location.
