Hotel sustainability: Challenges and solutions

Hotel sustainability

‘Net-zero hotels’ are something no one had heard of ten years ago, but now an increasing number are redirecting their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and achieve this gold standard in hospitality sustainability. While this is an encouraging step - you might call it a breath of fresh air - the wider environmental challenges facing the hotel sector remain stark.

According to the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance’s Global Hotel Decarbonisation Report , the sector must reduce its emissions by two-thirds by 2030 and 90% per room by 2050 if it’s to contribute to the goals set out in the Paris Climate Agreement. These ambitious numbers indicate that while there are some eco-friendly outliers, there’s still plenty of work to do.

Sustainability challenges facing hotels

Despite the dramatic increase in consumers seeking sustainable travel options , it’s still proving difficult for eco-minded guests to find truly green accommodation. The most recent UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai (2023) ended with a clear consensus that more must be done to limit global warming to 1.5oC by 2050, so why is the hospitality industry seeming to drag its feet?

Multiple internal and external barriers prevent sustainability adoption

A study of small hotel operators in Ghana found several internal and external barriers that are preventing hoteliers from making sustainability changes. While the study focuses on hotels in this developing region of West Africa, the results shed light on the broader issues and complex challenges that hoteliers face.

The main factors that prevent hotels from adopting and implementing sustainability measures are:

Internal barriers

  • Financial constraints: high operational costs, seasonal fluctuations, the cost of training, maintenance costs
  • Hotel staff: Negative attitudes, negligence, wasteful practices, frequent turn-over and unreliability among hotel staff members.
  • Understanding: A lack of education and awareness about the benefits of sustainability practices, attractiveness to customers, marketing, and strategic management principles.

External barriers

  • Seasonality: Seasonal fluctuations in occupancy rates, and particularly the low rates of patronage off season, make it difficult to invest in eco-friendly improvements.
  • Decision-making power: Interference in managerial decision-making by hotel owners who may be uninformed or unconcerned.
  • Regulatory: Compliance with environmental regulations can also be burdensome, with the requirement to obtain permits for renewable energy installations adding cost and complexity to sustainability initiatives.
  • Suppliers: Exploitative actions by suppliers who are profit-oriented and don’t care about sustainability, such as outrageous prices.

Improving an existing hotel has limitations

Another significant sustainability challenge facing the hotel sector is that achieving net zero requires hotels to take a holistic view of their emissions. Many only consider the harm caused by their day-to-day operations, but much of a hotel’s harmful emissions are embodied within the building itself. In fact, 30-70% of a hotel’s carbon footprint consists of emissions produced in the hotel’s construction, ongoing maintenance, refurbishment, and eventual demolition.

This reality leaves hotel operators with a key decision - should they demolish and rebuild the hotel with sustainability at its heart or improve what already exists? Building new, ultra-green hotels is expensive. Therefore, in terms of sustainability, many hotels have little choice but to make improvements to an existing property and retroactively renovate to improve its energy efficiency. Retrofitting can lead to significant improvements, but there are limits to what can be achieved within the existing infrastructure and with a limited budget.

Climate change risks are not seen as critical

Despite the forecasts, external pressure, and growing customer demand for sustainable practices, many hotel operators don’t see the potential risk of not complying with the sustainability agenda as critical.

According to a recent survey by Deloitte , only 39% of hotel operators believe non-compliance with sustainability issues represents a risk to their business over the next three years. This fact suggests that governments and regulators must do more to compel the industry to take action.

Why sustainability represents an opportunity for hotels

Despite the challenges of adopting sustainability measures, it also represents a tremendous opportunity for hotels. There’s no doubt that the future of the hospitality industry is green. A survey by Booking.com found that 83% of global respondents believe more sustainable travel is vital, with 49% believing there aren’t enough sustainable travel options and 53% saying they get annoyed when a hotel prevents them from being sustainable, for example, by not providing food waste or plastic recycling facilities.

The most environmentally conscious consumers - Millennials and Gen Zs - are quickly becoming the dominant market force in the travel industry. So acting now, despite the challenges, and getting ahead of the curve can bring significant future rewards.

Sustainable solutions for hotels

These are the practical sustainability solutions that hotels can implement to minimize their environmental impact and guide their journey towards net zero.

Energy efficiency

Energy accounts for just 3 to 6% of a hotel’s budget but produces roughly 60% of its carbon footprint . For that reason, making energy efficiency improvements is a good place to start.

Heating and cooling, hot water, ventilation, and lighting are the biggest energy consumers in hotels. To improve the efficiency of these systems, hotels are moving beyond LED lighting and occupancy sensors and switching to automated energy management systems. They include real-time monitoring and dashboarding solutions that track energy usage, identify areas where energy can be saved, and provide real-time reporting to optimize usage.

As well as sustainability advantages, energy management systems lead to lower consumption costs. Hotels can also switch to smaller, more efficient heating and cooling systems that reduce wear and tear, use less space, and create more comfortable guest environments.

Renewable energy sources

Hotels should also think about where their energy is coming from. Onsite solar and wind are popular power-generating options. However, many brands are thinking outside the box and entering into large-scale agreements with renewable energy providers that use everything from biofuel to hydrogen fuel cell technology.

One hotel in Japan even uses plastic and food waste to power a hydrogen fuel cell generator that produces enough energy to meet its requirements while reducing its CO2 emissions by 200,000 kW annually.

Water usage

This issue is one of the most difficult and most urgent for the hospitality industry. Many countries with the highest predicted levels of water stress for the coming years are also forecast to see the greatest tourism growth, putting hotels at the forefront of the critical battle for sustainable water management.

Luckily, hotels can take many practical steps to reduce their water usage, most of which are relatively inexpensive and easy to implement.

Four easy, cost-effective measures that hotels can take to reduce water usage:

  • Install water meters and submeters: Determine the areas of the hotel with the highest water usage and target your conservation efforts effectively.
  • Use water-saving tools: Install low-flow taps, toilets, and showerheads for quick and simple fix.
  • Simple staff training: Instruct housekeeping and restaurant staff to use minimal amounts of cleaning products and water in their daily operations.
  • Guest awareness: Encourage guests to reuse towels and store towels in places where they stay fresh to reduce the amounts of water used for laundry.

You can also make more impactful changes. For example, installing a greywater system enables wastewater from sinks and baths to be treated and reused for toilet flushing. One hotel chain in India has installed rainwater harvesting ponds throughout its grounds that collect rain that falls during the monsoon months for use throughout the year.

Waste management

The management of waste represents a significant sustainability opportunity for hotel chains. Many hotels do not have a waste management plan in place. The result is an industry that produces 290,000 tonnes of waste annually , including billions of pieces of single-use plastic.

There are many simple steps hotels can take to reduce their waste:

Providing clearly labeled bins for different waste items allows hotel guests to recycle and dispose of items properly.

Minimizing single-use plastics is another vital step, with refillable water stations and compostable packing providing a sustainable alternative.

Partner with local charities and food banks to reduce food waste and positively impact the local community.

Sustainable sourcing

There’s also a lot of unnecessary supply chain complexity in the hospitality industry, with goods and ingredients sourced internationally when sustainable alternatives exist nearby. For example, sourcing fresh, organic food from local producers reduces the harmful chemicals and emissions in the food supply. Other simple steps include buying eco-friendly cleaning supplies and purchasing sustainable furniture that’s made locally.

Several excellent solutions exist in this area, including Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM), Circular Supply Chains, and Sustainable Value Chains.

Embrace your sustainability journey and tell your story

Sustainability matters in the hospitality industry. It influences guest’s choices and impacts how they feel about your brand, so be sure to tell them about the steps you are taking. Whether it’s a video on your website or social media posts, keeping people updated and promoting your green practices will increase your sustainability performance and turn employees and customers into advocates for your brand.

Introduction

Looking for a pdf of this content.

Hotel guests, investors, owners, employees, and brands worldwide are displaying a growing interest in responsible environmental practices, sustainable tourism, social welfare, corporate governance and transparency. The growing customer and employee expectations are driving the hotel industry to prioritize decarbonization initiatives, sound environmental stewardship and responsible social policies and practices.

On the environmental front, many large public hotel companies have already committed to meeting targets set by the Paris Climate Agreement1 to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Without broadscale change, it is estimated that average global temperatures will reach 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels in the next twelve years or so, significantly increasing the likelihood of severe, large-scale climate-related storms, heat waves and droughts.

CBRE Econometric Advisors’ analyses of CO2 emissions highlight the urgency for hospitality and leisure establishments to lower their carbon footprint relative to other real estate asset classes. (Figure 1). The combination of an above-average carbon footprint and investors’ and guests' increased preference for environmentally sound hotels should accelerate the pace of improvement over the next few years.

This report provides a status update on ESG adoption in the hotel industry in the U.S., Asia Pacific, EU and the UK. It highlights examples of ESG-related initiatives and strategies pursued by hotel owners, operators and brands and identifies potential challenges and roadblocks to further implementation.

1 The Paris Climate Agreement is an international treaty that aims to respond to the threat of climate change by ensuring average mean temperatures this century do not increase by more than 2.0°C and to further pursue steps to limit any increase in average mean temperatures to under 1.5°C.

The global ESG landscape

Hotel companies’ climate-related initiatives typically focus on four key areas: energy efficiency, carbon emissions, water conservation and waste reduction. While creating consistency in reporting on water, waste, energy and carbon emissions measurement metrics can be challenging, many hospitality brands have started utilizing Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) and other standards such as European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) and International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) to set an internal framework for reporting standards. These reporting standards are helping hotel industry stakeholders understand and benchmark performance in relation to ESG targets.

Numerous third-party organizations are working with the hotel industry to develop research and tools that help hotels understand the climate impact of their operations. These include Greenview, an international consultancy that recently published a Net Zero Methodology guide to assist owners and operators with creating and implementing sustainability programs at the brand and property level to work toward a goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

To track performance, The Cornell Hotel School, Greenview, and several others have developed the Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index. The Index allows hotel companies to benchmark their progress in different sustainability areas against their peers. The following data show energy efficiency, carbon emissions and water usage in 25 countries among hotels participating in the Cornell Hotel Sustainability Index.

ESG rules and regulations vary across different markets, with some countries more advanced than others in terms of introducing legislation to mitigate climate change, such as mandating that new construction and remodels meet strict regulatory requirements. While there are government programs and tax credits that can offset costs, in general expectations for financial payback will need to be extended from today’s typical 7 to 10 years.

Common ESG themes across all regions globally include:

  • An increase in the number of benchmarking companies focused on measuring, quantifying and tracking carbon, waste, electricity and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) levels at the property and organizational level.
  • Robust commitments to science-based reduction targets and timelines.
  • An increased focus on ESG effectiveness as an investment criterion.
  • More initiatives to raise the number of diverse leaders in C-suite and board positions.
  • Employee and guest bases that are increasingly focused on working for and patronizing hotel companies they believe are good environmental stewards and committed to the wellbeing of their associates, communities, and guests.
  • Greater use of green financing options to improve the ROI on environmentally sound investments.
  • A drive to implement waste reduction (single use plastics) and energy efficiency, which are seen as low hanging fruit for most hoteliers.
  • Closer collaboration within the hospitality industry to reduce carbon emissions and meet sustainability targets involving organizations such as the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (SHA), the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, and the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA). CBRE expects to see more independent hotel owners partner with these organizations to leverage energy-efficient technologies, minimize food waste, and remodel assets to improve their environmental performance. 3
  • A growing emphasis on social goals. Organizations such as End Child Prostitution and Trafficking (ECPAT) are working with the hotel industry globally to advance causes such as ending human trafficking within the hospitality sector.
  • Incorporating green building standards, systems and certifications to facilitate the implementation of sustainability initiatives globally.

3 This list is not intended to be exhaustive but presents some of the larger organizations supporting ESG initiatives in the hospitality industry.

Here is a snapshot of the green building standard landscape across major global regions.

The EU is a global leader in tackling climate change and has introduced ambitious emissions-reduction targets.

Presented by the European Commission on December 11, 2019, The European Green Deal set the goal of making Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Under the initiative, EU member states have committed to reducing carbon emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels, and reaching climate neutrality by 2050. The European Commission has also created the EU Taxonomy, a regulatory body to assist in meeting climate and energy targets by 2030. These targets include an action plan for sustainable finance based on two new regulations dealing with taxonomy and financial disclosure regulations. 4

The UK aims to reduce GHG emissions by 68% by 2030, 78% by 2035, and 100% by 2050. Achieving these objectives will require commercial real estate companies, including those owning hotels, to develop strategies to achieve a 94% reduction in CO2 emissions between 2022 and 2050 to ensure compliance with the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit the increase in average global temperatures to 1.5 °C.

4 Taxonomy Regulation establishes criteria for determining whether an economic activity is environmentally sustainable and includes additional product-level reporting requirements for products that promote environmental characteristics, which will help protect investors and lenders from greenwashing. Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) imposes transparency and disclosure requirements on firms and products. 5 UK Climate Change and Real Estate Key Facts, by M. Gibson – April 2022

CBRE expects mandatory disclosure requirements and high energy prices to incentivize swift action from hotel industry stakeholders in 2023, with failure to act leading to immediate and tangible impacts in the form of reduced energy efficiency, which could result in added pressure on profit margins. Moreover, failing to act in line with these disclosure requirements could result in financial penalties and greater capital investment within the later phase of the asset’s life cycle. Improving access to data and conformity in benchmarking will provide greater insight into how sustainability affects value, allowing better-informed decisions on the issue.

While hotel operators in the EU and UK are focusing heavily on improving their social and governance performance, hotel owner-operators are striving to optimize the balance between all three elements of ESG when assessing their rate of return on any investments.

Fundamentally, the short-to-mid-term ESG actions of owners, operators, or brands will directly impact their brand and company’s reputation. By acting now, stakeholders can avoid falling behind their competitors and minimize reputational risk.

Although hotels in the EU and UK continue to grapple with high energy prices and rising operating expenses, properties with better energy efficiency are more resilient to the impacts of energy rate increases, which can mitigate budgetary uncertainties. Individuals investing in hotels are increasingly assessing the impact of sustainability initiatives on both net income and yield.

Hotel investors in the EU and UK are increasingly cognizant of the fact that improving energy efficiency can reduce costs and limit exposure to fluctuations in energy prices and are therefore keen to invest in these areas. Investors generally are willing to pay more when ESG risks are well managed.

In addition to minimizing brand and company reputation risk, more investors in these markets are assessing physical and transitional climate-related risks. Steps include identifying the most at-risk buildings and preparing them for retrofitting and adaptation. Resources for investors include the Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor (CRREM), an initiative that provides the industry with appropriate science-based carbon reduction pathways at the building, portfolio, and company level and financial risk assessment tools to manage carbon mitigation strategies cost-effectively.

6 Acute physical perils such as flooding, wildfires, hurricanes could cause damage to hotel assets and business interruption. Chronic physical perils such as drought, water stress and extreme temperatures created by longer-term shifts in weather patterns often result in increased operational costs for hotel owners or could even remove the ability to operate at all.

Asia Pacific

Climate-related legislation and initiatives in Asia Pacific are being driven by developed countries, with Singapore and Australia among the leaders.

In November 2022, Singapore announced it would raise its carbon tax for GHG emissions to S$25 (US$19) per tonne in 2024 and 2025 and S$45 (US$33) per tonne in 2026 and beyond. The country also plans to establish a framework for International Carbon Credits (ICCs), tradable certificates representing reducing or removing emissions from the atmosphere generated from projects or programs outside Singapore. Currently, Singapore’s S$5 (US$4) per tonne carbon tax rate applies to facilities that directly emit at least 25,000 tCO2e of GHG emissions per year, which includes many hotels. While the drastic nine-fold increase in tax levels may appear material, CBRE estimates the impact on hotels’ net operating income to be around 1%.

In Australia, the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) provides sustainability measurement tools for real estate assets, including hotels. NABERS includes ratings for energy, water, waste, and indoor environmental performance to help hotel owners benchmark and understand their property’s performance relative to comparable hotels. Green Mark, a Singapore-based rating and certification system, and Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM) Plus, a Hong Kong-based rating system, provide similar comprehensive frameworks for the environmental performance of both new and existing real estate, including hotels.

Figure 7: Major Asia Pacific hotel groups’ climate targets and net-zero goals

Source: Science Based Target Initiatives, March 2023

The incoming generation of hotel owners and developers in Asia Pacific is increasingly focused on incorporating ESG practices. Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) are also active in the ESG sphere by placing business based on environmental certifications obtained, such as GSTC and ISO14001. Among operators, the removal of single-use plastics is one of the top agenda items.

Larger hotel companies in Asia Pacific have pledged to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions, with a few starting to set out scope 3 emissions targets as they look to achieve net zero emissions. Reducing scope 3 emissions will rely on identifying ways to decrease carbon in the supply chain.

Cybersecurity best practices are key to achieving governance objectives and educating operators and employees. In addition, data and privacy protections are paramount for hotel operators who feel that current operating models are vulnerable.

Social initiatives in Asia Pacific impact three key categories of people – communities, employees, and partners. The hotel industry’s social objectives typically comprise wellness, DE&I, income inequality, and employee compensation. Priorities include promoting women to hospitality c-suite positions and providing greater employee benefits, including paid parental leave.

Corporate social responsibility and sustainability are built upon governance within hotel companies in Asia Pacific. Governance affects how resources are utilized and ensures companies comply with laws and regulations. Transparency in ESG reporting on overall waste and emissions is key, with failure to do so properly potentially resulting in penalties from ESG regulators.

While green financing and sustainability bonds are enticing for Asia Pacific developers adopting environmental strategies, minimum project costs of around US$100 million are typically needed to pursue such approaches.

While the SEC’s draft regulations could place new requirements on public companies, including hotel owner-operators, external stakeholders have been a more immediate catalyst for advancing carbon reduction programs. Recently, however, the U.S. government’s Federal Supplier Climate Risks and Resilience Rule requires federal contractors to disclose greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks and set science-based emission reduction targets. This ruling could have a trickle-down effect on other industries, including hotels and companies working with the same suppliers.

In terms of regulatory incentives and support, the US Department of Energy has created the Better Buildings Challenge, which is a voluntary leadership initiative to encourage, educate and support small hotel owners and operators to take the initiative in reducing energy consumption and water waste.

Investors that want more information about sustainability and climate impact guidance, regulations, and incentives for commercial real estate in the U.S. often look to local-level governing bodies, such as state, city, and in some cases, county officials.

Compliance with the ever-increasing state and local government building performance standards (BPS) will ensure that high-energy-intensity buildings progressively become more energy efficient and, therefore, less carbon-emitting over time. Some jurisdictions have hefty penalties for non-compliance.

Figure 8: Major North American hotel groups’ climate targets and net-zero goals

With DE&I becoming a significant focus for U.S. companies, hotel industry stakeholders are prioritizing guest and employee well-being and fair labor practices, specifically hiring, to ensure diversity among staff, executives, and suppliers.

On the social front, the Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign and corresponding Hospitality toolkit seeks to raise awareness about human trafficking and provide resources on recognizing and reporting human trafficking incidents, particularly at hotel properties. Hotel companies and organizations are continuing to commit to fighting human trafficking, with the American Hotel and Lodging Association’s (AH&LA) No Room for Trafficking program reiterating the industry’s collective promise to take anti-trafficking measures to prevent and combat human trafficking. Third-party organizations and NGOs such as ECPAT US provide news, resources, and guidance on preventing child trafficking in the travel industry.

Company ethics and transparent reporting on environmental and social issues have become a pillar of corporate governance. Many large hotel companies in the U.S. have board committees that oversee the direction and implementation of ESG goals.

Companies are increasingly using their own proprietary systems for implementing and monitoring ESG initiatives. Examples include Hersha’s EarthView, Hyatt’s EcoTrack, Hilton’s LightStay, Wyndham’s Green Toolbox, and IHG Green Engage.

The global hotel industry’s commitment to sustainability and ESG issues will continue to grow, driven by new regulatory regimes that require companies to move down the path to net zero.

While many hotel brands, owners and operators have pledged to improve ESG performance and reach net zero targets, slower economic growth in the EU, UK and Asia Pacific as well as an anticipated recession in the U.S. could slow near-term progress.

Other challenges such as persistent inflation and high interest rates and increased geopolitical uncertainty could prompt capital-constrained hotel companies to delay ESG initiatives and draw out their implementation timeline.

Hotel industry stakeholders would be well served to familiarize themselves with the ESG legislation, initiatives and trends discussed in this report, and draw on the right resources and expertise to formulate and execute ESG strategies.

Sustainability in the Hospitality Industry: Challenges and Opportunities

A screenshot, showing the five webinar panelists smiling during the online event.

Industry and academic experts convened online to make the business case for sustainability initiatives.

The hospitality industry has been shifting its focus and taking a robust approach when it comes to sustainability. From better managing energy and water consumption to eliminating single-use plastics and food waste, the industry is working toward championing responsible business and tourism. In an effort to accurately measure their impact and provide transparency to investors, customers, and employees, companies have begun scrutinizing their sustainability practices, moving from symbolic initiatives to those that actually combat climate change. With the help of technology companies are uncovering their true environmental impact, and quantifying less-tangible indirect emissions that are adversely affecting the planet.

On June 10th, the Cornell Nolan School of Hotel Administration’s (SHA) Center for Hospitality Research (CHR) hosted a virtual keynote webinar to explore the challenges and opportunities of sustainability in the hospitality industry. The keynote was moderated by SHA Assistant Professor Aaron Adalja . He was joined by Patrick Flynn , global head of sustainability at Salesforce ; Geraldine Guichardo ’10 , global head of research for the hotels & hospitality group, as well as director of Americas hotels research at JLL ; Denise Naguib , vice president of sustainability and supplier diversity for global operations at Marriott International ; and Jake Shirmer MBA ’12 senior manager and sustainability specialist at Deloitte .

Here are the top takeaways from the discussion:

Emissions scopes and opportunities.

Owing, in part, to scoping complexity and varying industry standards, Jake Shirmer explained the difficulties that companies have when attempting to understand their full and true environmental impact. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, he said, are measured in terms of scope. Scope 1 is defined as direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by a company, think diesel burned in facilities or vehicles. Scope 2 is the electricity or steam purchased to keep the lights on in an operation. And lastly, Scope 3 includes essentially everything else, for example, upstream emissions from suppliers and downstream emissions from a company’s consumers.

Reducing Scope 3 value chain emissions, the largest complexity, is about influencing vendors, suppliers, employees, and customers to change their sustainability practices. One way that companies are reducing Scope 3 emissions, for example, is adding climate breach and remediation fees to procurement contracts, binding suppliers and vendors into setting carbon neutral goals or paying the fees, and initiating a form of collective accountability that ensures sustainability is of utmost importance in business to business transactions. If vendors and suppliers don’t buy in to their customers’ sustainability initiatives, they could lose that business.

Greenhouse gas accounting, actionable insights, and standardization

After understanding and defining emissions scopes, companies can begin to quantify their impact. Patrick Flynn explained that there is a lack of skilled individuals who can standardize and fill in the gaps in the data and asked leaders to consider how many people in their organization conduct financial accounting compared to greenhouse gas accounting, suggesting that companies need to prioritize the latter as much as they do the former.

Salesforce has found ways to turn emissions data into actionable insights with their Sustainability Cloud, which Flynn described as “a comprehensive single source of truth for your full Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions picture, coupled with the data analytics and visualization you need to take…action.”

Meanwhile, other industry tools are tackling standardization. Denise Naguib shared how, in 2012, the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, the World Travel & Tourism Council, and 23 global hospitality companies co-created the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) and the Hotel Water Measurement Initiative (HWMI), consistent methodologies to help hotels measure guests’ carbon footprint and water consumption.

Getting stakeholder buy-in

Conceptualizing and communicating the value of sustainability initiatives to guests, hotel owners, brand operators, and other stakeholders can be a challenge, but their collective buy-in is crucial to any initiative’s success.

Hotels have a unique ownership and management structure, which, according to Geraldine Guichardo, means that stakeholder goals are not always aligned. Oftentimes, in order to align stakeholders, sustainability leaders must appeal to their wallets. Business leaders who have a tendency to focus on the bottom line might be surprised to learn, as Naguib elaborated, that there are real revenue implications and cost reductions associated with environmental practices. For example, a hotel owner may want to introduce a sustainability initiative that may not be in line with the brand standards of the management company operating the property. If the owner can demonstrate cost-savings to the brand, she might get the green light on her initiative.

Naguib also explained that matching service offerings to the needs of customers, who are increasingly interested in sustainable products and services, can reduce environmental impact and drive revenue, a practice that is critical for companies wanting to capture this demand and increase their market share. For example, organic or plant-based options at food and beverage outlets are popular, known to drive revenue, and reduce emissions associated with meat consumption and non-organic food. Similarly, replacing single-use plastic water bottles with reusable ones can encourage sustainable behavior among guests and, for the hotel, shift spending to more sustainable products.

Going green—from niche to mainstream

Today, companies that fail to take sustainability initiatives seriously risk going out of business as a result of rising conscious consumerism. Guichardo reminded viewers that Generation Z has $183 billion of buying power in the United States alone, and they are concerned about businesses’ efforts to combat climate change. Corporate behavior is shifting too as institutional capital increasingly favors sustainable business practices, and governments offer incentives and tax benefits for going green.

Naguib challenged companies to reframe sustainability initiatives so that they’re not always predicated on guests’ willingness to pay more. “It’s about [companies’] willingness to be competitive,” she said, and sometimes, that means sustainability initiatives will be at parity with cost. The outcome though is a better product or service that is also better for the environment. Instead of branding sustainability initiatives as the “expensive avenue,” Naguib suggested focusing on ways to “effectively compete…to drive the best value holistically” to truly make an impact.

Sustainability in the Hospitality Industry: A Comprehensive Guide

AdminTHDM

The hospitality industry is no stranger to change and adaptation, but in recent years, a fundamental shift has taken place. Sustainability has emerged as a cornerstone of modern hotel management, transforming the way hotels operate, from energy consumption to waste reduction. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the world of sustainable hospitality, exploring what sustainability means in this context, why it is important, and the challenges hotels face in implementing eco-friendly practices.

What is sustainability and why is it important in the hospitality industry?

Sustainability , in the context of the hospitality industry, refers to the practice of conducting hotel operations in an environmentally responsible and resource-efficient manner. It also encompasses promoting social responsibility by supporting local communities and adhering to ethical business practices. Sustainability in hospitality aims to minimise the industry’s negative impact on the environment while maximising its positive impact on the local economy and society.

The importance of sustainability in the hospitality industry cannot be overstated. As our world grapples with climate change and resource depletion, the industry’s ecological footprint has come under scrutiny. The rapid expansion of hotels and resorts, coupled with the resource-intensive nature of the industry, has led to environmental degradation, such as water wastage, energy consumption, and waste generation. Sustainable hospitality practices offer a way to mitigate these impacts, providing a responsible and ethical approach to tourism.

What are the sustainable practices in the hospitality industry?

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is a fundamental aspect of sustainable practices in the hospitality industry. Hotels and resorts consume substantial amounts of energy to power lighting, heating, cooling, and various amenities. Implementing energy-efficient measures involves the use of advanced technologies and equipment designed to reduce energy consumption. This includes the installation of LED lighting, energy-efficient appliances, and HVAC systems that optimise temperature control. Furthermore, integrating renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines allows properties to generate clean electricity on-site, significantly decreasing their reliance on non-renewable energy.

Water Conservation

Water is a precious resource, and hospitality establishments are increasingly focused on conserving it. Implementing water-efficient fixtures, such as low-flow toilets and faucets, in guest rooms and common areas minimises water usage. Recycling and reusing water through greywater systems capture and treat wastewater from sinks and showers, making it suitable for non-potable uses like irrigation. Encouraging guests to participate in water conservation is another crucial step, often achieved through linen and towel reuse programs, which reduce the frequency of laundry, saving both water and energy.

Waste Management

Waste management strategies in the hospitality industry focus on minimising the environmental impact of waste. Comprehensive recycling and composting programs are integral to this effort, diverting a substantial amount of waste away from landfills. Reducing single-use plastics, such as straws and bottles, is another common practice. Additionally, hotels may implement innovative waste reduction strategies during construction and operation phases. For instance, designing with minimal waste in mind can lead to efficient use of building materials, thereby reducing waste production.

Sustainable Sourcing and Procurement

Sourcing and procurement practices have a direct impact on sustainability. Hotels and resorts prioritise sourcing local and sustainable food products, strengthening connections with the local agricultural community. The goal is to offer guests fresh, authentic, and environmentally responsible dining experiences. Supporting fair trade products ensures that items are produced under ethical and humane conditions, aligning with responsible business practices. Using eco-friendly cleaning products and amenities reduces the environmental impact of cleaning processes, reinforcing an eco-conscious approach.

Building Design and Construction

The design and construction phase of hotels is a critical opportunity for sustainable practices. Using sustainable building materials, such as recycled or reclaimed materials, minimises the environmental footprint. Designing buildings for energy efficiency and water conservation includes features like green roofs and low-impact landscaping, reducing energy consumption and water usage. Certifying new constructions or renovations with eco-friendly standards like LEED demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and helps hotels and resorts maintain responsible operations from the outset.

By adopting these practices, hotels and resorts not only reduce their environmental impact but also align with the values of a growing segment of eco-conscious travellers, setting the stage for a more sustainable and responsible future in the hospitality industry.

What are the benefits of sustainable hospitality practices?

  • Cost Savings: Sustainable practices, such as energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems, lead to significant reductions in energy and water consumption. This translates to lower utility bills and operational costs, contributing to improved financial performance.
  • Enhanced Reputation: Hotels and resorts that prioritize sustainability cultivate a positive image in the eyes of guests and the public. They appeal to eco-conscious travelers who actively seek responsible accommodations. This enhanced reputation can lead to increased bookings and revenue.
  • Compliance: Sustainable practices often align with local, national, and international environmental regulations and standards. By adhering to these guidelines, hotels can avoid fines and penalties while ensuring that their operations are within the legal framework.
  • Resource Conservation: Sustainability initiatives actively contribute to the conservation of valuable resources. Water-efficient fixtures, for instance, reduce water consumption, helping to protect this finite resource. Similarly, energy-efficient technologies reduce reliance on fossil fuels, preserving them for future generations.
  • Reduced Environmental Impact: Lower energy consumption and waste production translate to a reduced carbon footprint. Sustainable hotels emit fewer greenhouse gases and send less waste to landfills, promoting a healthier environment and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
  • Market Competitiveness: In an increasingly competitive hospitality industry, sustainability sets hotels and resorts apart. Eco-conscious travelers actively seek out accommodations that align with their values, making sustainability a powerful marketing tool to attract a specific demographic.
  • Guest Satisfaction: Eco-conscious travelers are more likely to choose hotels that prioritize sustainability. They appreciate responsible practices and are more inclined to return to or recommend such establishments. Satisfied guests contribute to repeat business and positive reviews.
  • Employee Engagement: Sustainability initiatives within a hotel can boost staff morale and engagement. Employees appreciate working for a socially responsible and environmentally conscious employer, which can lead to higher job satisfaction and retention rates.
  • Community Integration: Sustainable hotels often prioritize local sourcing and support local communities. This fosters positive relationships and contributes to the economic wellbeing of the areas in which they operate. Involvement in community initiatives can further strengthen these bonds.
  • Resilience: Sustainable practices prepare hotels for future environmental challenges and market shifts. By reducing dependence on nonrenewable resources and aligning with the values of eco-conscious travelers, hotels become better equipped to adapt to changing market dynamics and environmental conditions.

What do sustainability, hotels and green initiatives all have in common? Green initiatives are practices that hotels put into action in order to be more sustainable. The ultimate goal of sustainability is to minimize your hotel’s impact on the region by reducing the unnecessary use of energy, supporting the use of alternative energy, and reducing greenhouse gases in an effort to change the course of global warming.

While no hotel can change the course of global warming on their own, every little bit helps. For this reason, sustainability should be more than just a trend but a way of operating for hotels in today’s market. Some of the 10 best sustainability trends and initiatives for hotels are relating to the following areas:

- Energy conservation - Amenities - Waste reduction and efficiency - Promoting sustainable means of transportation - Choosing cleaning products wisely with minimum impact on the environment - Careful selection of local food products at the hotel restaurant - Encouraging guests to make sustainable decisions - Promoting ecotourism - Water conservation - Operational changes

For a more detailed look at sustainability, why not download our free Green Hotel of the Future guide ? In the meantime, this article we will look at these different areas mentioned above, why sustainability is important in hotels, as well as the most common sustainability practices for hotels.

Table of contents

Why is sustainability important in hotels?

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, hotels are accountable for one percent of global emissions . This number will continue to rise as hotel demand increases, which is why implementing sustainability initiatives in hotels is so important to mitigate this negative impact.

Beyond the importance of hotels reducing their impact on the environment, sustainability measures also pose an important strategy for attracting new clients. Accordingly to a sustainability report by Booking.com, 68% of clients are interested in searching out eco-friendly hotels, and 87% of travelers worldwide state that they want to travel sustainably.

Furthermore, sustainability in the hotel sector is important to create a connection with the local population, while at the same time protecting the surrounding natural environment and biodiversity. Giving this local touch to a hotel experience helps distinguish a hotel from other hotels, providing high-quality experiences and contributing to creating an individual identity for a hotel.

Why is sustainability important in hotels?

What are the most common sustainability practices for hotels?

There are so many opportunities to improve energy, water, and waste efficiency in hotels but making choices around these elements aren’t the only common practices. Other common practices for hotels include making operational changes by using utility benchmarking and temperature adjustments, as well as other technical updates like high-efficiency water fixtures or LED lighting. Let’s take a look one by one at the most common sustainability practices for hotels.

Operational Changes

Hotels using a property management system have implemented changes using the reporting tools available from popular PMSs to benchmark utility use and provide setpoints for temperature adjustments. When the temperature is controlled and managed by the hotel it’s a lot easier to manage usage. Other technical improvements that can be implemented on an operational level are the use of LED lighting, as well as implementing high-efficiency water fixtures to control the use of water.

Waste reduction

Hotels produce an excessive amount of waste. In fact, UK hotels produce 289,700 metric tons of waste each year . Because of this, some of the most common sustainability measures are related to waste management.

Many hotels have implemented recycling in common areas, reusable food service materials and have made newspapers available in common areas rather than delivering to each individual room. Hotels have also implemented the use of reusable water bottles by having filtered water stations and giving guests a reusable water bottle instead of using plastic bottles.

Energy conservation

Energy conservation is one of the most important areas of sustainability because it has been found that reducing energy consumption can have the same effect on revenue management as increasing average daily room rate.

Some of the most common energy efficiency practices are energy tracking, having digital thermostats in the guest rooms, and the use of LED light bulbs . Another popular way of contributing to energy conservation is to install a one-switch system for lights so that lights don’t get left on accidentally, as well as the installation of solar panels to power water heating.

Another popular method is empowering guests to use sustainable means of transportation to get to the hotel by giving discounts or by having electric chargers for cars at the guests’ disposal.

Water conservation

Water use for hotels is responsible for about 24 percent of total utility expenses. Bathroom fixtures, laundry, landscaping, and kitchens are the areas where the most water is used. Reducing water use not only helps reduce costs, but is also a fundamental sustainable practice.

The most common water conservation practices that hotels have implemented are regular water tracking and low-flow toilets, as well as putting in efficient faucets and showerheads. It is important to note that high-efficiency bathroom fixtures use at least 20 percent less water , representing an important method of saving for hotels.

Another common practice is encouraging travelers to take sustainability into their own hands through both energy and water conservation. For example, hotels can have guests forgo daily towel and bed linen changes, which helps to reduce the energy and water necessary for laundry.

Amenities and cleaning products

Choosing amenities and cleaning products that are more friendly to the environment is important to reduce a hotel’s impact. Hotels have chosen to put soap and shampoo dispensers that are refillable instead of miniature amenities, which create excessive waste. While this method is more popular among mid-range hotels, high-range hotels have experimented with creating custom-formulated amenities in recyclable or compostable packages.

In terms of cleaning products, many hotels are choosing to shift away from abrasive cleaning products , towards organic or natural cleaners that are less harmful to both housekeeping and to the environment. This also helps move away from the use of products derived from petrochemicals.

Hotel restaurant

Hotel restaurants are taking sustainable initiatives to their restaurants, choosing to promote the use of local, organic food in their breakfast and meal choices. As well as promoting the careful and curated choice of ingredients at the hotel’s restaurant. There is without a doubt a shift towards sustainably-sourced ingredients that also help contribute to the local economy of where the hotel is located.

Sustainability should be treated with a holistic approach across all sectors – from housekeeping to operations and the hotel restaurant. Guests should also be encouraged to be involved in the process so that they can take an active role and be encouraged to make sustainable choices within the hotel and within the local environment, choosing local tour operators, and investing in locally-produced goods.

There are more than 10 common sustainability practices in hotels which can be implemented hotel-wide and help contribute to reducing the carbon emissions from the hospitality sector. Understanding and embracing these initiatives will not only help hotels save money by being more energy-efficient and create less waste, but also help differentiate your hotel from the competition. As we move towards more conscious consumers, hotels must be able to adapt to this type of consumer, offering them the chance to travel more sustainably.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. why have 12 criteria been selected.

The 12 criteria have been selected following an intense process of industry review and based on their significance as actions which represent a base level of sustainability activity that all hotels should be undertaking. They represent both back of house and guest facing activities, both of which are critical to making real sustainability progress, and include both environmental and social aspects. During the review process it became clear that reducing the number of criteria would compromise the robustness of the initiative, by eliminating some key and fundamental actions, but a phased approach has been suggested to allow time for the full set to be implemented. Furthermore, any more would dilute the focus and overwhelm those trying to put them into practice.

2. Why are some mandatory from the outset?

It is recognised that the 12 criteria although basic in nature, will still take time and effort to implement particularly in hotels which are starting out on their sustainability journey. For this reason, 8 of the criteria should be in place within the first year of implementation, and the remaining 4 by year three. There is flexibility in terms of which criteria hotels may choose to prioritise for year 1.

Now more than ever, travelers are holding themselves to higher standards of social responsibility as they plan their trips and set forth on their journeys. And while hotels use an abundance of resources, there are many standout properties that are implementing new solutions and utilizing new technologies to make a more positive environmental and social impact. Below, we've called out 11 sustainable hotels from around the world to take notes from.

Shinta Mani Wild The Cambodian Royal Tent

Shinta Mani Wild, Cambodia

Eco focus: Rainforest protection

When architect and designer Bill Bensley acquired nearly a thousand acres of rainforest on the border of three national parks in Cambodia , swathes of ancient hardwoods were saved from logging and mining. The decadent forest hideaway he  created in 2018 works in tandem with the Wildlife Alliance, which has anti-poaching rangers patrolling for traps who dismantle about 32 feet of poachers’ snares daily. Amid all this, Bensley’s joyful side shows: Shinta Mani Wild's guests can arrive by a 1,300-foot zipline over the Tmor Rung river canopy, should they fancy it. Butlers service 15 waterside tents filled with quirky objets d’art. Days are spent cruising the river on a pontoon, being magicked to jungly dreamscapes for picnics, splashing about in the freshwater swimming pool or fly fishing.

Hotel address: Prey Praseth Village, Ou Bak Rothed Commune, Kampong Seila District Preah Sihanouk Province, Cambodia Price: Tents from about $2345 all-inclusive

Asilia's Usangu Camp Ruaha National Park Tanzania

Asilia Usangu Expedition Camp, Tanzania

Eco focus: Water conservation

Now part of the Ruaha National Park , this wetland area has long been a source of hunting trophies, but it also feeds into river systems throughout Tanzania. As a result of the expansion of large rice farms nearby, vast interconnected rivers have started to dry up, affecting people and wildlife. The new Asilia Camp—with four simple tents, showers and camp-style fireside food—is at the heart of a project intended not only to protect this key resource and bring jobs, healthcare, and education to the community through tourism, but also to encourage guests to play a key role in citizen-science projects. Activities include setting camera traps, helping scientists collar lions and wild dogs, and taking plaster casts of animal footprints. With 2,300 square miles of protected wilderness, there’s a great variety of landscapes to enjoy: on game drives, walks, and boat safaris.

Hotel address: Ruaha National Park, Iringa Tanzania Price: From about $700 per person per night full board (minimum stay three nights)

Hotel Marcel, Connecticut

Eco focus: Passive house power

Two miles from the Yale University, this long-empty 1970 Brutalist monolith by Bauhaus master Marcel Breuer—same as of the Met Breuer in New York City —has been reborn as a hotel. Connecticut architects Becker and Becker acquired the building from Ikea, ripped out asbestos, and restored the distinctive gappy façade. NYC studio Dutch East Design turned offices and research labs into minimalist grey-and-caramel rooms and lobbies. Now the 165-room Hotel Marcel is under the Tapestry Collection by Hilton. Breuer’s pre-cast concrete design lends itself to centuries-old efficient heating and cooling methods, according to Dieter Cartwright of Dutch East. Solar panels and a clever Power over Ethernet lighting system provide energy, which is also conserved through electronic shade treatments and all-electric kitchens. Hotel Marcel is on track to qualify as the USA’s first net-zero hotel by May 2023, creating a crucial blueprint.

Hotel address: 500 Sargent Dr, New Haven, CT 06511, United States Price: Doubles from about $205

Oasyhotel Tuscany

Oasyhotel, Italy

Eco focus: Not-for-profit rewilding

La caccia—the hunting of red stag, roe deer and wild boar—is as woven into Tuscan culture as truffle-snuffling pigs . But amid the old hunting ground of the Pistoia Apennines, a small miracle has taken root. Oasyhotel is a 16-lodge concept for the WWF-affiliated Dynamo Oasis, a 1,000-hectare parcel of the San Marcello Piteglio nature reserve. Sustainable wood was repurposed to create minimalist retreats with large verandas and views of chestnut, beech, and fir forests. The hotel is part of a wider project that rolls in eco-sound agriculture, breeding programs and scientific research. Wolves, deer and wild boar have returned, woodpeckers sing, and golden eagles swoop. Days are spent exploring peaks, meadows, lakes and rivers, with activities including hiking and biking, wolf-tracking and foraging, lake swimming and kayaking. Yoga, guided meditations, and saunas are laid on by the lakeside. The bounty of the reserve’s farm can be tasted at Le Felci farmhouse restaurant or alfresco Casa Luigi, where guests gather to salute the Tuscany of the future over organic wines.

Hotel address: Via Privata San Vito, 1, 51020 San Marcello Piteglio PT, Italy Price: Lodges from about $310

The Brando, French Polynesia

Eco focus: Renewable cooling

A parallel universe awaits guests whisked by plane from Tahiti to this private island—one of bobbing palms, a forest spa in a suspended bird’s nest, and a jungle-wreathed freshwater lake topped with lotus flowers. The Marlon Brando bequeathed it in his will to now-owner Richard Bailey. Unsurprisingly, The Brando is beloved by A-listers (Margot Robbie, Barack Obama and Ellen DeGeneres once bumped into each other in the gym). Clean-energy solutions abound: the refined 4,000-plus solar panels and a customized battery energy-saving system standout in French Polynesia. The Sea Water Air Conditioning set-up is a pioneering technology that slashes energy use by up to 90 per cent and has been adopted by other properties including InterContinental Bora Bora Resort.

Hotel address: Tetiaroa, Arue 98702, French Polynesia Price: One-bedroom villas from about $2,800 all-inclusive

Nomadic Resorts

Playa Viva, Mexico

Eco focus: Biophilic design

Six new bamboo treehouses have landed at this light-touch eco-lodge in Juluchuca on Mexico’s  Pacific coast, close to major Aztec archaeological sites. Playa Viva offers total immersion through biophilic design, shielding guests from the elements while getting them viscerally close to nature. Enormous care has been taken to fuse the structures with the setting, using prefab bamboo panels and paraboloid roofs that slot into place with minimal disturbance to the ecosystem. “It is a rare privilege to spend time in a space free of whirring or buzzing,” says Louis Thompson, CEO of Nomadic Resorts, who designed the treehouses. “We underestimate the value of not hearing a single man-made sound. As the shelters project towards the sea, all you hear is the ocean—no distracting motorized noises.” The solar-powered rustic resort is totally off-grid, with soft lighting so as not to disturb nesting turtles on the protected beach.

Hotel address: Juluchuca, Zihuatanejo, Playa Icacos, 40834 Gro., Mexico Price: From $205 per person per night all-inclusive

Holmen Lofoten

Holmen Lofoten, Norway

Eco focus: Minimal foodprint

This remote clutch of centuries-old rorbuer cabins, built to shelter migrant fishermen on the Lofoten Islands, has expanded gently to include contemporary eco-friendly suites. But even with 26 guests in residence at full tilt, Lofoten remains close-knit, hyperlocal, wild, and rugged in its Arctic Circle landscape, its spirit, and its menus. Valentine Warner helms the outstanding visiting-chef program and curates the Kitchen On The Edge Of The World long weekends, when general bookings at Holmen are suspended and everything falls sway to the sacred experience of eating that’s attuned to the landscape. Exclusive, immersive experiences are the mainstay and include foraging and fishing.

Hotel address: E10 3180, 8392 Sørvågen, Norway Price: three nights from about £1,480 per person half board

Wilderness Vumbura Plains, Botswana

Eco focus: Community support

Wilderness Safaris is a standard bearer for stylish Botswana adventures, and its rebuilt Vumbura Plains —a contemporary retreat that seems to float on the floodplain—shows its heart. Vumbura exemplifies Wilderness’s partnership with the Okavango Community Trust. Chef Ipeleng Gloria Gasimodimo, whose popular water-lily stew graces the menu, has been with the company for 38 years. Joining her are sisters, aunts, cousins, and childhood friends who work together with a closeness palpable at the Monday boma, or campfire gathering. Locals intrinsically understand this vast microcosm of lagoons, swamps, and floodplains, where crocodiles bask on sandy banks and hippos groove water channels.

Hotel address: 2VCV+5CG, Lechomos, Botswana Price: from about £1,375 per person per night all-inclusive

Hotel Brooklyn Manchester

Hotel Brooklyn, Manchester

Eco focus: Accessibility

It’s hard to miss the vintage yellow New York taxi parked outside this boutique hotel in Manchester . What you may not notice is that the whole place has been designed to be accessible across a spectrum of needs—wide lifts, level public spaces, a lowered reception desk, adjustable clothes rails, and clear color contrast throughout. The hotel group worked with Motionspot, specialists in this type of design (other clients include The Newt in Somerset , while a second Brooklyn has just opened in Leicester). Rather than the dutiful addition of a couple of bedrooms at the back, there are 18 Liberty suites dotted about—nine of them wheelchair accessible, with support rails, slip-resistant tiles, shower seats, and lever taps, and two with overhead hoists tucked into the ceiling. Unsurprisingly, Brooklyn has Blue Badge and Catey awards on its lapel. This is what happens when accessible design is considered from the start, without compromising on style or fun.

Hotel address: 59 Portland St, Manchester M1 3HP Price: Doubles from $190

Misool Resort

Misool Resort, Indonesia

Eco focus: Biodiversity boosting

Balinese-style bungalows made from reclaimed driftwood and local materials overlook the shores of a former shark-finning camp. Being here is about reef exploration, and the experience is meticulously curated for divers. Beneath the bungalows are turtles grazing on seagrass, vibrant schools of clownfish, giant clams, and manta rays; more adventurous guests can snorkel by torchlight after dark. There are many sustainability wins, including hydroponic gardens, natural waste-water treatment, a solar farm, a vegetable co-op run by women, and a recycling project—but what is most impressive is the 248 per cent increase in fish biomass since 2007. This was done by creating the 300,000-acre Misool Marine Reserve, patrolled 24 hours a day by workers, many of whom were once poachers.

Hotel address: Yellu, South Misool, Raja Ampat Regency, West Papua 98483, Indonesia Price: Seven nights from about $3,255 per person full board

Terrestre Hotel Escondido

Terrestre Hotel, Mexico

Eco focus: Solar smarts

This otherworldly brick-and-concrete Tetris is set in the scrub—surf, jungle and mountains softening its monolithic edges. It is pitch-perfect beach modernism for the 21st century from Grupo Habita, the Mexican hotel outfit that has eschewed faceless resorts for something new and sustainable. Terrestre is fully solar powered. Passive cooling and native planting invite birds and butterflies. There are 14 rooms in the main building and guests socialize in a large alfresco restaurant where chefs prepare plantain patties and herby salads. Punta Pájaros, a 40-minute drive from Puerto Escondido, was once the reserve of fishermen and surfers. Now digital entrepreneurs and Californian mini-breakers seek upmarket cultural stays, and Terrestre Hotel is part of the forward-facing new options. ( More on that, here .)

Hotel address: Carretera Salina Cruz- Pinotepa, 71983 Puerto Escondido, Oax., Mexico Price: doubles from about $382

Top 10 Sustainability Presentation Templates with Examples and Samples

Top 10 Sustainability Presentation Templates with Examples and Samples

In 1997, the Danish government announced a competition to design a model renewable energy village to demonstrate that the country's Kyoto climate commitment of reducing carbon emissions by 21% was achievable. Samso, a 4,000-person island in Denmark, applied and won with a plan centered on significant community involvement and a cooperative ownership model.

Samso has received international environmental accolades for its 21 turbines, which provide all local energy demands and offset global warming emissions from fossil fuel use in transportation, farm equipment, and buildings. The island's current goal is to eliminate the use of fossil fuels by 2030. Anyone doubting the viability of green power should consider looking it up.

In this article, you’ll find a free example to help present your hotel project in an engaging and professional manner.

If you’re seeking a more comprehensive, structured, data-driven, customizable, and general presentation that caters to a broader audience, you can refer to our business plan for a hotel project .

Presentation of the Hotel Project

We are excited to introduce our innovative hotel project, located in the heart of the city.

This project is centered around a rooftop urban farm and garden-to-table restaurant . Our aim is to provide guests with a unique dining experience featuring fresh, hyper-local produce, while simultaneously reducing food costs and enhancing sustainability.

To achieve this vision, we will:

  • integrate a sustainable and eco-friendly rooftop farming system
  • cultivate a variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs directly on our rooftop
  • implement organic farming techniques to ensure chemical-free produce
  • create a green space that supports biodiversity and urban sustainability
  • establish efficient systems for harvesting and delivering fresh produce to our restaurant

Our project will also feature culinary workshops for guests to educate them on sustainable cooking practices and the benefits of using fresh, local ingredients.

Additionally, we will form partnerships with local suppliers to complement our rooftop produce and offer a diverse menu to our guests.

We will collaborate with community organizations to promote awareness of sustainable dining and the environmental benefits of urban farming.

Our 3-year financial forecast and charts demonstrate that we will achieve profitability swiftly, with financial margins that allow us to recoup all initial investments within the first year.

The Objectives of the Hotel Project

Environmental objectives.

Our hotel project aims to enhance sustainability by integrating a rooftop urban farm , reducing food miles, and promoting biodiversity.

Here are the objectives:

  • Grow fresh, hyper-local produce without using pesticides or other chemicals
  • Implement sustainable farming practices that support the urban ecosystem
  • Minimize the carbon footprint associated with food transportation

Economic Objectives

We also seek to boost the local economy by reducing food costs and creating job opportunities within the community.

The objectives are as follows:

  • Lower operational costs by sourcing produce directly from our rooftop farm
  • Create direct and indirect jobs in urban farming and hospitality
  • Enhance the profitability of the hotel by offering a unique dining experience

Social Objectives

Our hotel project aims to enrich the guest experience by providing fresh, nutritious meals and promoting awareness of sustainable practices.

Our objectives for this category are as follows:

  • Offer guests access to fresh, healthy meals directly from our garden-to-table restaurant
  • Educate guests on the benefits of urban farming and sustainability
  • Engage the local community through workshops and events focused on urban agriculture

Feasibility Study of the Hotel Project with Rooftop Urban Farm

Costs associated with implementing the hotel project.

The total cost of the hotel project will depend on the scale and sophistication of the rooftop farm and restaurant. The main costs to consider are as follows:

This cost varies depending on the location, size, and design of the rooftop farm. Expenses for structural enhancements, waterproofing, and safety measures can be significant.

The requirements for materials and equipment include hydroponic systems, organic soil, seeds, and gardening tools. These expenses can be substantial.

Staff involved in the project will need initial and ongoing training to acquire skills in urban farming and sustainable practices. Training costs should be anticipated.

Additional expenses to consider include administrative fees, marketing and communication costs, as well as costs related to necessary permits and licenses.

Planning the Hotel Project

Planning is one of the key steps in any hotel project. To ensure the project's success, it is essential that each stage is meticulously planned and executed.

All stages and strategies are outlined in the business plan we created for launching our hotel project .

Resources Required for the Hotel Project

To successfully implement the hotel project, it is crucial to clearly identify the necessary resources for the rooftop farm and ensure they will be available at the right time and place.

The resources required for the effective execution of this hotel project are listed in the table below.

Evaluations of the Hotel Project

Once the hotel project is up and running, it's crucial to conduct regular evaluations to ensure that it aligns with our established goals and delivers the desired outcomes.

Here are three types of evaluations we can implement for our hotel project.

1. Qualitative Evaluation

This evaluation focuses on assessing whether the project has met its qualitative objectives, such as enhancing guest satisfaction through unique dining experiences.

To achieve this, we need to consistently gather feedback from guests about their dining experiences and ensure that the quality of the produce used in our restaurant meets high standards.

2. Quantitative Evaluation

This evaluation involves determining whether the project has achieved its quantitative objectives, such as the volume of produce harvested from the rooftop farm.

Regularly tracking the amount of produce grown and used in the restaurant will help us verify if we are meeting our production targets.

3. Financial Evaluation

This evaluation examines whether the project has achieved its financial objectives, such as reducing food costs and enhancing profitability.

It's essential to regularly review the financial performance of the rooftop farm and restaurant to ensure that the savings on food costs contribute positively to the hotel's overall financial health.

Risks Associated with the Hotel Project

Launching a hotel project with a rooftop urban farm involves several risks that need to be considered beforehand.

Weather conditions can significantly impact the rooftop farm, potentially affecting the supply of fresh produce. To mitigate this risk, implementing weather-resistant farming techniques and structures is crucial.

Pest infestations or plant diseases can compromise the quality and quantity of produce. Adopting preventive measures, such as organic pest control and regular monitoring, is essential to minimize this risk.

Insufficient financial resources can lead to project delays or financial losses if the budget does not cover all associated costs (e.g., rooftop infrastructure, gardening equipment, staff training, etc.).

To mitigate these risks, it's important to develop a clear and realistic business plan for our hotel project . This will help us establish a robust and sustainable long-term strategy.

Communication Strategy for the Hotel Project

To achieve our goal, we need to implement an effective marketing and communication strategy.

We believe these efforts will not only enhance the profitability of the hotel project but also raise guest awareness about health and environmental issues related to urban farming and sustainable dining.

First, rather than simply creating an online presence , we will establish an interactive and educational platform that will include a blog on urban farming practices, infographics on our rooftop cultivation processes, and even live videos showcasing the journey from garden to table.

This site will not only serve as a showcase but will allow true immersion into our approach.

On social media, instead of daily posts, we will focus on an approach based on “educational mini-series” : for example, a weekly program where our chefs and gardeners present their practices, challenges, and sustainable solutions.

These contents will be optimized for engagement by adding quizzes and polls that invite followers to think about the challenges and benefits of urban farming and sustainable dining.

We will opt for strategic partnerships with eco-friendly influencers, urban farming experts, and local chefs to promote the project.

These ambassadors will share their experience and the benefits of our fresh, hyper-local produce through blog articles or recipe videos, highlighting the origin and quality of our ingredients.

Instead of traditional advertisements, we will collaborate with media specialized in ecology and gastronomy, offering native publications that tell our story and the benefits of our project, which will have a more authentic impact. These publications will include testimonials from chefs and sustainability experts to enhance our credibility.

Additionally, we will organize immersive events to bring the urban farming experience to life. Some options include:

  • Rooftop garden tours with educational workshops for guests
  • Cooking classes with our chefs using produce from our garden
  • Sustainability seminars to discuss the impact of urban farming and sustainable dining

Finally, a public relations strategy focused on eco-friendly media and specialized blogs will help spread inspiring content, such as chef interviews or impact studies.

We aim to show how each dining experience contributes to a more respectful model for the planet and people.

With this strategy, we aim not only to promote the hotel project but to spark a movement of awareness and commitment to sustainable living. Our ambition is to ensure a lasting impact and offer guests a unique and meaningful experience through dining that respects nature and human health.

Take a walk through the most ancient Kremlin in Russia

The Novgorod Kremlin, which is also called ‘Detinets’, is located on the left bank of the Volkhov River. The first fortified settlement was set here during the reign of prince Vladimir Yaroslavich, the son of Yaroslav the Wise. During these times, all the state, public and religious life of Novgorod was concentrated here. It was the place where people kept chronicles and copied the texts of books. The Novgorod Kremlin, the most ancient one in Russia, was founded here in the 15th century.

St. Sophia Cathedral (11th century), The Millennium Of Russia Monument, Episcopal Chamber (15th century) and the main exhibition of The State Novgorod Museum-reservation located in a public office building of the 18th century are all situated in the Novgorod Kremlin. The exhibition will tell you about the whole Novgorod history from ancient times to the present day. There are also restoration workshops, a children’s center, a library and a philharmonic inside the Kremlin walls.

Send a letter with the State Novgorod Museum-reservation stamp

While visiting the main building of the Novgorod Kremlin museum, you’ll see a small bureau near the souvenir area. Two more bureaus like that can be found in the Fine Arts Museum and the Museum information centre. This is the Museum Post, the joint project of the State Novgorod Museum-reservation and Russian Post.

The tradition to exchange letters (at that time written on birch bark sheets) dates back to the 11th century so it’s hardly surprising that such a project appeared here. The bureaus are desks and mailboxes at the same time, so you can send your friends a postcard with a view of Novgorod right from the museum.

Find the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin among the figures of The Millennium Of Russia Monument

In 1862, 1000 years after the Varangians were called to Russia, a monument dedicated to this event was launched in Novgorod. To tell the story of Russia’s one thousand years, the sculptor used 129 bronze figures: from state and military leaders to artists and poets.

One of figures portrays Afanasy Ordin-Nashchokin, a politician and reformer who was responsible for Russia’s diplomatic relations in the middle of the 17th century. He is believed to be the father of international and regular mail in Russia. He was also the person who came up with the idea of the first Russian Post official emblem — a post horn and a double-headed eagle.

Cross the Msta River over the first arch bridge in Russia

The steel bridge in Borovichi town that connects two banks of the Msta river was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The project of the bridge was created by Nikolay Belelyubsky, engineer and professor of St. Petersburg State Transport University. This is the first arch bridge in Russia.

In 1995, it was included in the national cultural heritage register. More than 100 bridges across Russia were developed by Belelyubsky, but only this one is named after him.

Cast a virtual bell

When in the Novgorod region, you’ll definitely hear bells ring and learn about the Novgorod Veche Bell. During the siege of the city, tsar Ivan III ordered to remove this bell from the bell tower and send it to Moscow. Legend says that the bell didn’t accept his fate, fell to the ground near the border of the Novgorod region and broke to pieces against the stones.

In the biggest Museum Bell Centre in Russia located in the Valday town, you can see bells from across the world and learn why Novgorod bells are unique. The museum’s collection represents bells from different countries and ages, some of them dating back to the 3rd century BC. You’ll learn about the history of casting and modern bell-making technologies and also play games on a touch table. For example, harness virtual ‘troika’ (three) horses with bells or cast a virtual bell.

Spot the pigeon on the cross of St. Sophia Cathedral

St. Sophia Cathedral was built in Novrogod between 1045 and 1050 by Kievan and Byzantine masters. It was conceived as the main cathedral of the city, and during its first years it was the only stone building in Novgorod. So where does the pigeon on the cross of the cathedral’s biggest dome come from?

Legend says that while tsar Ivan the Terrible and his Oprichniki were cruelly killing peaceful city folk in 1570, a pigeon suddenly sat down to the cross of the city’s main cathedral. It looked down, saw the massacre, and was literally petrified with horror. Since then the pigeon has been considered the defender of the city. People believe that as soon as the pigeon flies away from the cross, Novgorod will come to an end.

The Valday Iver Monastery is situated on the island in the middle of the Valday lake. It is considered to be one of the most important and picturesque orthodox shrines.

The monastery was founded in 1653 by the initiative of Nikon who had just been elected Patriarch. Nikon wanted the monastery to look like the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos, including the architectural style and monk’s clothes. Legend says that Nikon saw the spot for the monastery in a dream.

Check out Fyodor Dostoevsky’s country house

Fyodor Dostoevsky, a famous Russian writer, first visited Staraya Russa town in 1872 during a summer trip with his family. They liked it so much that the next year they rented a house near the Pererytitsa River’s embankment and spent every summer here ever since.

Dostoevsky loved this house, called it ‘his nest’ and considered it the perfect place to work and to be alone. In Staraya Russa he wrote his novels ‘The Adolescent’, ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ and ‘Demons’. Today, this place is a museum where you can explore what Dostoevsky’s house looked like and see his family’s personal belongings, photos and letters.

Learn what Brick Gothic looks like

The Episcopal Chamber of the Novgorod Kremlin is the only non-religious German Gothic building of the 15th century preserved in Russia. You can have a good look at the facets of the gothic cross-domed vaults inside the chamber. This is why this building is also called ‘Faceted Chamber’ or ‘Chamber of Facets’.

The chamber was part of Vladychny Dvor, the place where all important city events took place: court hearings, gatherings of the Council of Lords of the Novgorod Republic, ambassador’s receptions and feasts. The seals of the city’s lords were kept here. The decree of tsar Ivan III on merging the Novgorod Republic with the Moscow State was first announced in 1478 in Episcopal Chamber. This is when the name of the new state, Russia, was first pronounced.

See the murals by Theophanes the Greek

The Byzantine Empire had a huge impact on the development of the Russian culture. Many works of art and architecture in ancient Russia were created by Byzantine artists and masters. Theophanes the Greek was one of them. He was born in Byzantine and created icons and murals in Constantinople and Caffa (modern Feodosia). After that he moved to Novgorod where he was commissioned to paint the walls of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior on Ilyina Street. You can enjoy his unique and expressive style if you look at the murals inside the dome of the church and the Trinity side chapel.

The most recognizable and the only monumental work of Theophanes the Greek that is preserved today is the chest-high portrait of the Savior the Almighty in the dome of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior.

Take a photo with an ancient Novgorod citizen who is learning how to read and write

In 1951, a letter written on birch bark dating back to the 14–15th centuries was found in Veliky Novgorod. Many decades later, in 2019, a sculpture designed by Novgorod artist and sculptor Sergey Gaev appeared on this exact site.

The sculpture portrays an 8–year old boy sitting on a stool and holding a piece of birch bark. At this age children in Novgorod started to learn how to read and write. During archaeological excavations in Novgorod, scientists often found ancient handwriting practice books and children’s drawings on birch bark sheets.

Feel like an ancient viking or prince Rurik’s guest

Novgorod is one of the waypoints of the famous trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks. The route passed through the Volkhov river. In the 9–10th centuries there was a fortified settlement of the Viking Age here.

Some scientists believe that Novgorod is named after this area which was called ‘Stary Gorod’ (‘Old City’) at that time. Some historians and archeologists consider this place to be the residence of Prince Rurik who was asked to rule the city in 862. That’s why this ancient settlement is called ‘Rurikovo Gorodische’ (‘Ruruk’s Old City’).

Find yourself in the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, Staraya Russa town could be called ‘the salt cellar of Russia’. That’s because salt making was the main trade here up to the 19th century. A few years ago, the old craft was brought back to life, and construction of salt works began. Later, an interactive museum was launched based on the results of archaeological findings.

This museum recreates a typical medieval manor of Staraya Russa of the 12th century with living rooms, a bathhouse, workshops, a livestock pen and traditional peasant household items. In this museum, you can also buy salt which is made in the same way as 1000 years ago.

See the place where Suvorov started his Italian campaign

Alexander Suvorov’s manor in the Konchanskoe village, which has now become the museum of the great commander, was originally the place of his exile. Suvovor openly disagreed with the reform of Russian’s army based on the Prussian model, and Emperor Paul the First didn’t appreciate such behaviour. He first fired Suvorov and then sent him away to his family estate.

However, the exile lasted for only two years. The great commander started the military campaign straight from his house in the Konchanskoe. During this legendary expedition, he crossed the Alps and defeated the French army.
