Usain Bolt (born August 21, 1986, Trelawny parish, Jamaica) is a Jamaican sprinter who won gold medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter races in an unprecedented three straight Olympic Games ( 2008 , 2012 , and 2016 ). He is widely considered the greatest sprinter of all time.
Bolt is the son of grocers in Sherwood Content, the town in Jamaica’s rural Trelawny parish where he grew up. He excelled as a cricket fast bowler in his preteen years. He developed a deep affection for the European football (soccer) teams Real Madrid and Manchester United , but his school coaches steered him toward track and field .
Bolt first marked himself as a track prodigy at the 2002 world junior championships. In that meet, racing before a crowd of 36,000 in Jamaica’s National Stadium in Kingston, Bolt—just 15 years old at the time—won gold in the 200 meters , becoming the youngest-ever male world junior champion in any event.
At age 16 Bolt cut the junior (age 19 and under) 200-meter world record to 20.13 sec, and at 17 he ran the event in 19.93 sec, becoming the first teenager to break 20 seconds in the race. However, hampered by a hamstring injury, he failed to advance beyond the 200-meter heats at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and placed last in the 2005 world track-and-field championships final.
At 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 meters), Bolt defied the conventional wisdom that very tall sprinters are disadvantaged as fast starters. In 2007 he appeared newly dedicated to his training and earned a silver medal in the 200 meters at the world championships.
He also persuaded his coach to let him try the 100 meters , and he ran 10.03 sec in his first professional race at the distance. On May 3, 2008, he lowered his best time to 9.76 sec, then the world’s second fastest mark. Four weeks later in New York City , Bolt broke the world record, running 9.72 sec to defeat world champion Tyson Gay.
At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , Bolt became the first man since American Carl Lewis in 1984 to win the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4 × 100-meter relay in a single Olympics and the first ever to set world records (9.69 sec, 19.30 sec, and 37.10 sec, respectively) in all three events. (However, a failed drug test by one of his 4 × 100 teammates led to Bolt’s having his gold medal in that event stripped.) His 0.66-sec winning margin in the 200-meter race was the largest in Olympic history, and his 0.20-sec edge over the second-place finisher in the 100 meters, despite beginning his victory celebration about 80 meters into the race, was the largest since Lewis won by the same margin.
At the 2009 world championships, Bolt shattered his 100-meter record, winning the event final in 9.58 sec. Four days later he broke his own 200-meter record by the same 0.11-sec margin to win a second gold medal at the world championships.
Bolt was the heavy favorite in the sprint events heading into the 2011 world championships, but a false start disqualified him from the 100-meter final. Despite failing to medal in his signature race, Bolt recovered to capture golds in the 200 meters and the 4 × 100-meter relay, helping to set a new world record in the latter event.
At the 2012 Olympics in London , Bolt defended his titles in the 100-meter and 200-meter events (setting an Olympic record in the former) to become the first person to win both races in consecutive Olympiads.
In 2013 he won three gold medals at the world championships (100 meters, 200 meters, and 4 × 100-meter relay).
At the 2015 world championships Bolt again won gold medals in his three signature events (100 meters, 200 meters, and 4 × 100-meter relay), and his fourth career 200-meter gold extended his record for most wins in that race at the world championships.
Bolt cemented his role as the best sprinter in history at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games , where he captured golds in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 4 × 100-meter relay events, becoming the first person to win golds in the two individual sprints in three straight Olympics.
He retired from athletics after the 2017 world championships, where he won a bronze medal in the 100-meter sprint and finished in eighth place as a member of the 4 × 100-meter relay team after injuring a hamstring during the final.
Bolt published a memoir, My Story: 9:58: The World’s Fastest Man (written with Shaun Custis), in 2010. It was expanded and reissued as The Fastest Man Alive: The True Story of Usain Bolt in 2012.

Essay Preview: Usain Bolt
Imagine yourself entering a stadium in a country that you are not formal with and to have 4.7 billion people watching in attendance or on tv… just to watch you do what you do best in less than ten seconds. Imagine yourself being asked every single day by random individuals for a foot race just to tell there friends and companions that they had the chance to race the fastest man on the planet. Yes people I am talking about the fastest man on the planet Usain Bolt. With his times through out his track career he can also be referred as the fastest man to ever live. As a track sprinter myself his track times and speed is just ridiculous when he was just 15 he would have blew me out the water with his speed and to mention I went to state for track it just shows at such a young age he was destined to do great. first we will take a journey on how usain bolt became the fastest man on the planet and how he found his passion for track and field then take you to the path of his great career in track and field and finally talk to you about where he is now in his career and what other barriers he will take down.
Most people may think track is the only sport Usain bolt did but they are very wrong. Usain was born in Jamaica and in Jamaica the main sports were soccer and cricket. Usain started playing both soccer and cricket he still plays those sports till this day but with friends and usually when the coach is unaware of it because he doesn’t want Usain to get hurt. At a young age Usain was actually a standout cricket player and dreamed about playing professionally cricket when he was younger. Track and field was never in his mind until his cricket coach noticed a talent of his and that was his speed. His cricket coach introduced cricket to him and the rest is history. At first young Usain was very hesitant on doing track just because he would have to move to Kingston Jamacia with his coach in order to train. He didn’t want to leave his parents but his parents knew the true talent Usain had to they convinced him to go. After him moving and starting the training it didn’t take Usain very long to get noticed. At the age of 14 Usain started getting noticed by many people from his blazing speed and him making it to big track meets. Its hard to believe that his first medal at any meet came in the 80 hurdles in Class Three at Western Champs held on the campus of his Alma Mater William Knibb Memorial High in Martha Brae. By his towering height over everybody usain at young age did many events such a the high jump aswell. By the year 2001 Usain sent signals that he would be a world beater in early 2002 when he cruised to a hand timed 20.3 seconds to win the 200m at Western Champs finals at Catherine Hall. In the following year 2002 he announced that he would be running in the IAAF World Junior T&F Championships in Kingston in front of the biggest crowd ever to watch these meets. Usain himself said he was more nervous to run in the junior Olympics more than any other race because of his young age of 15 and he would have to run with guys that were 18 and up. He begged his parents not to run because he was scared but his parents would not let that happen because they believed in Usain. So Usain agreed and ran he won the host nation’s only individual gold medal, winning the 200m in 20.61 seconds. He left that meet with three medals including two silver medals in the relays, anchoring the 4x100m team and was part of the 4x400m team as well. He was the youngest athlete to win a gold in the junior Olympics. After the junior Olympics he received the International Association of Athletics Foundation’s Rising Star Award that year and soon was given the nickname "Lightning Bolt." Usain could never do the stuff he did at a younger age without his great support from his family they always kept by his side and only wanted good for him. After he opened everyone’s eyes with his blazing speed people wanted to see more of him. So he started his professional career in track and field. Now that we have learned about his younger track career Usain bolt was ready for the Olympics and the big leagues.
Usain Bolt was an upcoming star in the track and field world but there is one thing that many people don’t know about him. Usually when you ask about him they will say he only has been in only two Olympics the Beijing and London Olympics. But they are very wrong. Usain Bolt but at the age 18 he entered the 2004 Athens Olympics but lost in the first round of the 200 meter dash due to a hamstring injury. He was so disappointed in his performance in that Olympic that it stuck with him for the next long four years. He trained harder than ever before to bring back the era of the lighting bolt. August 22 2008 is when Usain Bolt’s life changed forever this is the day when he became the fastest man ever with a time of 9.69 seconds . Even though he made the final heat of the 100 meter dash no one was expecting what would happen next. With blistering speed blew away all of his competitors in the dust. He was so far ahead that he had time to celebrate during the race he put out his arms to show the world who is the fastest person while he was running and one of his shoes was untied aswell. After the world seen history broken with a new time the world could not wait for the next race that he competed in. his next race would be the 200 meter dash everyone was excited to see Usain Bolt run once again everyone waited with anticipation but was not ready for whats to come. Usain Bolt for the second time in the same day broke another world record in the 100 and 200 meter dash the world was shocked and could not believe what they witnessed not even the previous 200 meter world record hold Micheal Johnson. Usain Bolt left the 2008 Beijing Olympics with 3 gold medals from the 100 meter dash , the 200 meter dash and the 4x100. After the 2008 Olympics Usain Bolt was a household name. everyone one knew Usain Bolt “the fastest man ever”. It was all glorious for Usain Bolt but he did not know what was coming. Through out the years after the 2008 Olympics. Usain started to get a rival that could really compete with him or even beat him. His name was Yohan Blake a Jamaican teammate of Usains. Just like Usain, Yohan Blake was blowing out people the water in races but they never got a chance to race eachother. After years of anticipation the two would finally meet in a big track meet in England the last track meet before the 2012 London Olympics. Entering the England track meet Yohan Blake had the fastest 100 time of the year so everybody could not wait till they finally meet. When they lined up next to eachother the crowd was going crazy with excitement. It was finally time to run everyone was waiting the shot of the umpire to begin the race while they were just mear seconds to run Usain Bolt false started and got disqualified from the much anticipated race. After Usain got DQ’d Yohan Blake took over and won the race with flying colors and broke his own time from the year which made him seem even faster. Usain was heart broken because he wanted to run so bad it really took a toll on him. So he had to wait for the 2012 London Olympics. After a couple months since the false start the 2012 London Olympics had finally come. Usain came with a vengeance but this is one of the first times the world thought Usain Bolt will lose. After a couple heats of the 100 meter dash the two had made it to the finals of the 100 meter dash. They both lined up on the line the crowd was dead silent with there heart beats rumbling until the gun went off and the two were flying out the blocks it was a very close race but at the end Usain Bolt came out victorious with a time of 9.63 that time was even faster than the pervious Olympics. Usain left the Olympics again with three gold medals with medals in the 100, 200 and 4x100. He proved the world wrong and showed he is still the fastest in the world.
