Like most careers, salaries vary considerably depending upon factors such as degree held, years of experience, geographic location, and area of employment. Starting salaries range from $48,000 to $75,367. At the doctorate level, salaries range from about $92,000 to $111,000.

A Salary and Compensation Survey by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society reported the following average yearly salaries for doctorate-level engineering psychologists in different fields:

Engineering psychology focuses on the relationship between humans and products or machines that we use every day. Specifically, these psychologists focus on how we interact with, perceive, and are influenced by various devices and products. Engineering psychologists can also help in the design and production of new products to make them more functional and enjoyable. Just like every other psychologist, engineering psychologists aim to make life better for humans.

Demand for engineering psychologists is growing fast because of today’s boom in technology use. Humans are surrounded by technology and products at nearly every second of the day, which can have an impact on various aspects of the human experience. Engineering psychologists use research to understand how humans are impacted by technology and to make products safer and more efficient to use. The psychologists may conduct their research using pilot tests on panels, creating focus groups, and distributing surveys. One aspect of the research process that is particularly important to engineering psychologists is demographics. Demographics give the psychologists information about the types of products that certain people are using and why usage may be different from group to group. It also helps psychologists to understand which groups like a certain product based on look or functionality.

There are currently 70 American universities that offer Human Factors and Ergonomics Study (HFES) accredited graduate programs in engineering psychology. Jobs can be found with either a master’s or PhD, but individuals with PhDs generally make higher salaries and have greater control over their decisions and products. Salaries are highest in private industry, reaching above $100,000 with a doctoral degree. Master’s-level salaries typically fall around $90,000. The School of Psychology of the Georgia Institute of Technology offers programs of study leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy, with five areas of specialization: Cognition and Brain Science , Adult Development and Aging , Engineering Psychology , Industrial/Organizational Psychology , and Quantitative Psychology . All five programs of study provide intensive exposure to the theoretical and methodological foundations of psychology with strong emphasis on quantitative skills. Each student is expected to show individual initiative in both research activities and academic study, supported by close faculty-student contact.

The School of Psychology also participates in an interdisciplinary PhD degree program in Quantitative BioSciences and an interdisciplinary MS degree program in Human Computer Interactio n (*please note that we do not offer a terminal Master’s degree in Psychology ).

Our graduates have positions in academia, industry, the military, and government. In a survey of our 2007-2011 graduates, we found that 45% took a faculty position, 14% took a research position, 7% were working in a postdoctoral position, and 32% worked in industry. Our current student-to-faculty ratio is 4-to-1, and we strongly believe in the apprenticeship model of mentoring. In an anonymous survey conducted in 2012, our alumns state that they appreciate 'the opportunity for interdisciplinary studies and research', consider their time here 'extremely valuable', that Tech 'prepared [them] extremely well for [their] career' and that 'the quality of education [they] received was due to the dedication of the very accomplished faculty'. We, of course, agree.

Online Degrees and Programs in Engineering Psychology

Engineering psychology applies the knowledge of human behavior to software and websites, and to electronics and other types of equipment. It is a discipline that requires its professionals to apply their knowledge of human behavior to complex systems. Engineering psychologists make interactions between humans and machines easier and less frustrating.

The American Psychological Association , the accrediting body for psychology programs, explains that engineering psychologists combine technology and psychology to improve the interactions with systems and equipment that people use on a regular basis.

There are a limited number of online engineering psychology degrees. Students who want to work in engineering psychology sometimes search for programs listed by other degree names, including human factors engineering.

Although there are not many online degree or graduate certificate programs in engineering psychology, students need to make sure that the program and the educational institution that they enroll in are accredited. Failing to check for accreditation may lead to students not being able to work in the field, or having difficulties finding career employment.

Engineering psychology degrees are available at the undergraduate level and the graduate level. Students should be aware of the requirements for licensure or certification in the state where they intend to practice.

Bachelor’s Degree

Regent University offers an online BA/BS in Engineering Psychology program. The interdisciplinary program is jointly offered by the School of Engineering and the Department of Psychology.

Students complete 15 courses in the engineering psychology major. Each course must be at least three credits.

Some areas of application include the internet, environmental design, and product design.

Master's Degree

Master's degree programs in engineering psychology prepare students to enter the workforce as engineering psychologists or to continue their studies and earn a doctorate degree while offering a flexible learning format from the comfort of their own homes.

Currently, there are no online master’s programs in engineering psychology, but there are plenty of online psychology master’s programs to choose from. This may be an ideal route to go down and then consider a graduate certificate in engineering psychology.

Graduate Certificate

Earning a graduate certificate in engineering psychology is likely to give students an advantage over their peers. An online graduate certificate provides additional skills and knowledge for students who want an engineering psychology career.

The Human Factors Graduate Certificate online program at Grand Canyon University provides students with the opportunity to expand their core knowledge of the profession. Some components of the program include perception, cognition, and industrial design.

There are currently no online doctorate degree programs available in engineering psychology . Students who wish to continue their education in this specific specialization will have to do so on-campus at a university of their choice.

The engineering psychology program curriculum is likely to vary among the different degree levels, and among different colleges and universities.

Bachelor’s: Bachelor's degree programs usually require four years of full-time study. The program usually requires the completion of around 120 credit hours. Courses include Fundamentals of Human Factors Engineering and Human Factors in Product Design and Development.

Master’s : There are not many master's degree programs that are engineering psychology programs. Some sample courses include Human Factors Engineering and Psychometric Theory.

Graduate Certificate: Some topics covered in a graduate certificate in an engineering psychology program include perception, cognition, and industrial design. The curriculum includes courses such as Graduate Engineering Psychology and Graduate Cognition.

Doctorate : Doctorate degree programs in engineering psychology may take several years to complete. Students often have to complete an internship, field experience, and comprehensive exams.

Online engineering psychology programs usually require that students complete an internship or a field project. The programs at some schools require that students complete one internship or project, while other colleges or universities require that students complete two or more semesters with an internship, field experience, or project.

The program or department adviser works with students to determine the best internship or project placement. The internship placement is likely to be based on things like the students’ interests, goals, or availability of placements. Companies put a lot of thought into how users interact with a product. In designing products, they think about the physiological aspects of this interaction, such as minimizing physical strain. However, they also factor in psychological considerations. That’s where engineering psychology comes in.

What Is Engineering Psychology?

Engineering psychology is a field of psychology that uses insight into people’s mental processes to design better products, systems, workspaces, and environments. Its emphasis is on maximizing human capacity and safety during human-machine or human-environment interactions while minimizing inefficiency and error.

Engineering psychology is a close relative to human factors engineering, also known as ergonomics. All three terms are often used interchangeably, but some view engineering psychology as a subset of human factors engineering. In this regard, engineering psychology looks at human factors “ above the neck ,” whereas human factors engineering can also cover ergonomics related to how people use their bodies in other ways. Thus, engineering psychology focuses on areas of psychology such as perception, memory, learning, and cognition. It is all about making sure behavioral and cognitive principles are properly incorporated into product design.

Note that engineering psychology doesn’t only apply to human interactions with technology or machinery. The American Psychological Association (APA) suggests breaking the field down into three types of relationships:

  • between people and environments
  • between people and machines, and
  • between people and tasks.

Examples of engineering psychology challenges include designing productive workstations, minimizing the risk of injury in the use of complex machinery, or describing a work project in a way that people can understand and will help them succeed.

Ironically, though engineering psychology is now known for its contributions to improving human safety, it was partly born out of experimental psychology during World War I as a way of helping U.S. soldiers hit their targets. A psychologist by the name of Raymond Dodge found he could predict the best gun-pointers by testing individuals on more basic functions like eye movement. Early engineering psychology wasn’t just for weapons, however. Researchers also looked at how to counteract the effects of decreased oxygen supply on pilots at high altitudes.

Why Is Engineering Psychology Important?

Engineering psychology can help humans be more efficient and productive, enhance the human experience with technology, and—perhaps most importantly—save lives. It is relevant in nearly every industry, from aviation to healthcare.

Few people notice good design. However, bad design can be deadly. Take roads, for instance. Painting a white line across a road gives drivers the sensation of driving fast, prompting them to slow down. According to Dennis Coon and John O. Mitterer , painting such lines near intersections lowers accident rates. Similarly, lining up burners on a stovetop with the knobs directly below them reduces the chance of accidentally using the wrong burner.

What Does an Engineering Psychologist Do?

Engineering psychologists help make machines and systems safer and more efficient by designing them for human use. While a robot can be programmed to act in a certain way, human beings are more complicated. Engineering psychologists recognize that systems, products, and environments should be designed around how humans process information and interact with their environment.

Engineering psychologist job functions become more apparent when applied to industries. For instance, aerospace and aviation are huge areas where engineering psychology is needed. Psychologists help design cockpits and instruments so pilots can quickly find the correct controls in an emergency. Even the shape of the instrument—a landing lever shaped like a wing—can help save lives.

According to the APA , engineering psychology is a rapidly growing field with an abundance of opportunities for those who wish to work in the field. Industries are realizing the benefits of applying psychological theories to the design of products, processes, and environments that humans are involved with.

How Do I Become an Engineering Psychologist?

Engineering psychologists usually opt to get their doctorate because it can qualify them for academic and some government jobs and opens the door to the highest-paid and greatest range of jobs in all fields. Available degrees include a Ph.D. in engineering psychology, a Ph.D. in human factors psychology, or a Ph.D. in psychology with an emphasis in engineering psychology. The route to a Ph.D. involves specific stops in undergrad and graduate school.

Bachelor’s Degree

A few dozen U.S. universities run undergraduate degrees in engineering psychology or related areas. Degree titles include human factors psychology, aviation human factors, industrial and systems engineering, and design and environmental analysis.

You may be able to find human factors engineering jobs with just a bachelor’s degree if you have a specific degree in that area. However, you don’t necessarily need to find a school that specializes in engineering psychology during undergrad if you’re planning on progressing to a master’s. A bachelor’s degree in psychology or a bachelor’s in engineering with a concentration in psychology can suffice as a starting point,

A four-year psychology degree should include introductory courses like developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, and abnormal psychology in the course list. Undergraduates will also likely get their first look at how to conduct research in preparation for a final thesis or project.

Master’s Degree

If you didn’t major in engineering psychology in undergrad, you can specialize in a master’s program. You can find a list of both master’s and doctoral programs offered by industrial engineering or psychology departments in the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) directory . Plus, although the APA doesn’t currently accredit engineering psychology programs, it does maintain a list of programs .

Degree titles you might come across include human systems engineering, safety and ergonomics, human factors in information design, human-computer interaction, applied experimental psychology, and aviation human factors. You might even just get a master’s in psychology with a concentration in human factors or engineering psychology.

Most master’s programs in engineering psychology take two years of full-time study to complete, with a typical program covering some basic ground in general psychology, research methods, and statistics. You might then move on to more specialized coursework in systems integration, cognitive research, human-computer interaction, and UI design. Programs typically require a dissertation to graduate, with a practicum sometimes required as well.

Doctoral Degree

The HFES accredits and lists Ph.D. programs in human factors and engineering psychology in its directory . Because a terminal degree is the time to specialize, a number of schools offer doctorates specifically in engineering psychology.

If you’ve already got a master’s in engineering psychology, a Ph.D. in the field might take around four years to complete. If your master’s is in a more general area, you may have to spend a year or two taking care of master’s-level coursework (see above) before starting your dissertation. You’ll probably take additional research methods and statistics classes and perhaps a research writing class to prepare you to conduct original research on a topic, disseminate the findings, and defend the results.

Online Programs in Engineering Psychology

If you’re looking for online programs specifically, your options may be more limited. However, plenty of colleges offer psychology and industrial engineering degrees online. Usually these programs are hybrid, meaning that certain components such as labs or internships cannot be completed online. Make sure you understand the program requirements before applying.

Licensure and Certification

While psychologists generally need licensure to practice with patients in clinical settings, engineering psychology is an applied psychology field. To conduct research or help design products, you likely don’t need licensure. That comes with a huge caveat: Most states still require anyone using the title of psychologist to be licensed, though some make exceptions for certain industrial-organizational psychologists. To know for sure, check with your state psychology board .

What is the psycheng specialization.

PsychEng is the Collaborative Graduate Specialization in Psychology, Psychiatry and Engineering. This specialization is currently between the Department of Psychology (PSY) in the Faculty of Arts & Science (FAS), the Department of Psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and several Departments in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering (FASE), with participation by additional FASE departments and institutes.

Psychology is a science that focuses on the mind and behavior of people and animals to understand individuals and groups across all levels of analyses, from the cellular to the cultural. Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that focuses on mental health, including diagnosing, preventing and treating mental conditions. Engineering involves the creative application of science to the design of systems, processes, structures and technologies. The Psychology, Psychiatry and Engineering Collaborative Specialization will draw students interested in contributing to the growing interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of psychology, psychiatry and engineering.

How does the research work?

The PsychEng Collaborative Specialization serves graduate students who are interested in the intersection of psychology, psychiatry and engineering by providing access to learning experiences that otherwise do not exist at the University of Toronto. Students will gain improved capacity to pursue, understand, discuss, and apply engineering to research in psychology and psychiatry, and to apply psychology and psychiatry to research in engineering. Psychology and psychiatry students may discover practical engineering applications to which to apply their work, while engineering students can utilize psychological and psychiatric principles towards solving real-world problems. This specialization allows students to obtain a unique combination of competencies not otherwise available through a formal program, by completing related courses and immersion in a like-minded cross-disciplinary community, and by pursuing independent PsychEng-related research through projects that fit in areas including, but not limited to:

Applicants must be accepted into one of the participating graduate degree programs (i.e., M.A.Sc./Ph.D. in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering or M.A./Ph.D. in the Department of Psychology or M.Sc./PhD in Institute of Medical Science) before being accepted into the Collaborative Specialization.

In addition to satisfying the home degree admission requirements, applicants will provide a statement of purpose in which they describe their background or experience relating to engineering, psychology, psychiatry and their intersection, and why they are interested in pursuing graduate studies in PsychEng.

BA/BS in Engineering Psychology

Engineering Psychology is an interdisciplinary program offered jointly by the School of Engineering and the Department of Psychology. Engineering Psychology (and Human Factors Engineering, within the School of Engineering) applies knowledge of human behavior to the design of web sites, software, electronics and other equipment. Areas of application include the internet, computer systems, biomedical engineering, environmental design, and product design. Students in the School of Engineering or School of Arts and Sciences will receive the Bachelor of Science degree from their respective college.

Program Requirements and Policies

  • The major requires 15 courses of at least 3 semester-hour credits.
  • Students scoring 4 or 5 on the Psychology AP exam, 6 or 7 on the International Baccalaureate (Higher Level) exam, or A or B on the GCE A-level exam earn credit for PSY 1. In other words, the student earns 3 semester-hour credits and does not need to take PSY 1 for the major. Students may substitute Child Study and Human Development 1 for PSY 1 for prerequisite purposes, but they must take an additional psychology course in order to reach the 11 courses required for the major.
  • No course can be used to fulfill multiple requirements.

Engineering psychology focuses on exploring and understanding the relationship between humans and machines. It’s the science of human behavior and our interactions with the technologies that go into the design and operation of machines, equipment, and more.

An Innovative Engineering Psychology Program

The advanced certificate in engineering psychology will expand your core knowledge of engineering psychology by exploring course work in cognition, perception, ergonomics, industrial design, and more. The advanced certificate provides you with formal recognition of your knowledge in engineering psychology and establishes a credential for seeking a career in the human factors or ergonomics fields. Students enrolled in the MS degree in experimental psychology may be awarded the advanced certificate by taking the certificate's required courses as part of their master's program.

What is a Graduate Certificate?

A graduate certificate, also called an advanced certificate, is a selection of up to five graduate-level courses in a particular area of study. It can serve as a stand-alone credential that provides expertise in a specific topic that enhances your professional knowledge base, or it can serve as the entry point to a master's degree. Some students complete an advanced certificate and apply those credit hours later toward a master's degree.

This program is available on-campus only.

Part-time study is 1‑8 semester credit hours. RIT will not issue a student visa for advanced certificates.

Application Details

To be considered for admission to the Engineering Psychology Adv. Cert. program, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Complete an online graduate application . 
  • Submit copies of official transcript(s) (in English) of all previously completed undergraduate and graduate course work, including any transfer credit earned.
  • Hold a baccalaureate degree (or US equivalent) from an accredited university or college.
  • A recommended minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent).
  • Submit a current resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Submit a personal statement of educational objectives .
  • Letters of recommendation are optional.
  • Entrance exam requirements: None
  • Writing samples are optional.
  • Submit English language test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE Academic), if required. Details are below.

International applicants whose native language is not English must submit one of the following official English language test scores. Some international applicants may be considered for an English test requirement waiver .

International students below the minimum requirement may be considered for conditional admission. Each program requires balanced sub-scores when determining an applicant’s need for additional English language courses.

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Undergraduate degree options.

As an undergraduate in either our BS in Environmental Engineering or BS in Civil Engineering programs, you will complete approximately two years of math and science and two years of engineering coursework. Students from both programs will work together in four hands-on project courses, one each fall. Taking advantage of free elective courses can also allow you to pursue an additional major or a minor from a variety of areas of study. Recent graduates have completed additional majors in Engineering and Public Policy, Psychology, and Technical Writing and minors in Architecture, Computer Science, and Business.

Some of our students also choose an additonal major or minor with our I ntegrative  De sign,  A rts and  Te chnology Network (IDeATe). This unique program connects diverse strengths across Carnegie Mellon University to advance education, research, and creative practice in domains that merge technology and arts expertise.

Minor: Environmental and Sustainability Studies

The minor in Environmental and Sustainability Studies  offers an interdisciplinary approach to environmental and sustainability issues beyond a traditional engineering major degree program.

Six courses are required with offerings from a wide range of disciplines, including architecture, business, engineering and public policy, english, history, and philosophy.

Minor: Global Engineering

The  Global Engineering minor  prepares you to join an international community. Courses are designed to increase global awareness and international experiences.

Requirements include coursework in international management, ethics, modern language, as well as a study or work abroad experience.

The  I ntegrative  De sign,  A rts and  Te chnology Network (IDeATe) connects diverse strengths across Carnegie Mellon University to advance education, research, and creative practice in domains that merge technology and arts expertise. IDeATe concentrations and minors  provide the opportunity for you to choose from creative industry themes such as intelligent environments, physical computing, and media design. Courses are focused on hands-on collaborative learning and are structured to combine students from many different disciplines.

IDeATe supports eight interrelated undergraduate concentration areas, all of which can also be taken as minors. The themes of these areas integrate knowledge in technology and arts: Game Design, Animation and Special Effects, Media Design, Sound Design, Learning Media, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Intelligent Environments, and Physical Computing.
