How to Talk about your Daily Routine in English

daily routine speech

Talking about your daily routine in English.

This is a very common task that you might be asked to talk about in the IELTS speaking test. It could also happen in an interview for school or college — or sometimes a job interview.

But it is a very common topic that could take place in an English conversation. You may not have a conversation about your entire daily schedule, but you might have to talk about a small part of your day and what you do.

For many English students, this seems to present something of a problem. Someone asks them what they do every day and they are stumped.

Why should this be so?

After all, you are talking about yourself and the things you do every day. It should be easy.

In this guide, I will show you what you need to say, the order in which to say it and what English grammar and vocabulary you will need.

Are you ready?

Let’s get into it.

Table of Contents

A Simple Guide on English Grammar

I know you all hate to study English grammar, but we do need to look at some rules when talking about your daily schedule.

Don’t worry these are very simple.

The Only Verb Tense You Will Ever Need

daily routine speech

When talking about your daily routine you will only need to use one verb tense. And that is…

SIMPLE PRESENT

This is the most basic and easiest of English verb tenses and it is the only one you will need when talking about the things you do every day.

I am sure you know how to use it but let’s just recap.

You just take the subject — in the case of your daily schedule that would be ‘I’ — and then the verb in its basic form.

For example:

You might need to use other subjects when talking about your parents, your friends, your teachers or colleagues. In which case, be careful when using the subjects he, she and it.

She listens

That is pretty much all you need in terms of verb tenses. You might need to express negatives, in which case you would say:

He doesn’t eat

She doesn’t listen

I don’t talk

I don’t stay

It’s pretty simple — hence, simple present!

Watch Out For Adverbs

daily routine speech

You will also need to use adverbs to express time. Such as:

These are the most common ones, but you could also use other adverbs:

So for example, you might say:

I always go to school at 7am

I never get up early at the weekend

My dad sometimes drives me to school

I usually meet my friends at the weekend

I do my homework before dinner

I do my maths homework first, then my English homework

I generally get home around six pm

Now You Try!

Using all the adverbs above, make sentences of your own about your daily schedule. Talk about things you do every day.

Try to use all the adverbs above. Make different sentences for each adverb.

This is great practice for talking about your daily schedule.

Put Everything In Order

daily routine speech

It is best to think about what you do every day in a logical sequence. Don’t jump from one part of the day to the next as it is confusing to the listener — and for you.

You can divide the days into sections — then you only have to talk about that one section.

The sections could be:

If you really wanted to be more detailed, you could split the mornings into three sections:

Morning at home

Morning going to school/work

Morning at work

And you could do the same with the afternoons too:

Afternoon at school/work

Afternoon coming home

But when you arrive back home, maybe we can refer to that as the evening.

Now let’s look at each of these time segments throughout the day in more detail. The kind of things we can say about the things we do in each part.

Morning Routine

daily routine speech

Think about what you do every morning when you wake up. Many of us have the same routine before leaving the house to go to school or work.

Brush teeth

Wash face/shower

Get dressed

Eat breakfast

Drink tea/coffee

Say good morning to family/wife/roommates

Read the news/catch up with the news

Leave the house

Let me show you an example of someone talking about their morning routine.

I usually wake up around six-thirty. My alarm goes off and I turn it off and sleep for another ten minutes. Then the alarm goes off a second time and I have to get up. I go to the bathroom and brush my teeth and wash my face. I don’t shower in the morning as I usually take a shower in the evening before I go to bed. Then I go back to my bedroom and get dressed. I leave my school uniform hanging in front of my wardrobe so I can put my clothes on easily every day. After that, I go to the kitchen and have breakfast. My mum usually makes breakfast — just something simple like an egg and some bread. I don’t like to drink coffee so I have some orange juice. I chat with my mum and dad during breakfast. But my dad doesn’t talk too much. He likes to catch up on the news on his phone. But he always says ‘nothing but bad news’ so I don’t know why he reads it. It gets to just after seven am and I have to leave to go to school. I say goodbye to my mum and dad, give my mum a kiss and I leave the house. My school is very near where I live so I usually walk to school. If it’s raining, my dad takes me to school but he always complains about it! I get to school around 7:30 and meet up with my friends in the usual place. We talk about things we like — music, some TV shows and other stuff. Then we go to the first class.

Go through all the text above and highlight all the verbs and adverbs of time.

Make a note of how the verbs and adverbs are used with other words:

Usually wake up

Around six-thirty

Go to the bathroom

Brush my teeth

Wash my face

Make a note of all these phrases and write them in your vocabulary notebook.

Then make sentences of your own.

When you have done all the above exercises, you need to talk about your morning routine.

You could write out a script and practice speaking out loud.

Or you could just use whatever phrases and vocabulary you know and just talk freely about your morning routine.

You can practice in front of a mirror. But also try to talk about your morning routine in front of your class and teacher.

On The Way To School/Work Routine

daily routine speech

Now you need to think about your journey every day to school or work.

  • How do you get there?
  • What do you do on the way there?
  • Do you meet anyone on the way and talk to them?

These are some useful phrases you might need:

Walk to the bus stop/school/ the subway station/work

Take the bus to school/work

Take the subway to school/work

Wait for the bus/subway

Meet my friend at the bus stop/subway station/on the wa y

Buy some snacks at the shop

Talk to my friend

Now let’s look at an example of someone talking about their morning routine as they make their way to work.

I walk to the subway station — it usually takes about fifteen minutes. On the way there, I buy some snacks. I find I get a little hungry around ten-thirty or so and want to eat something. I get to the subway and it is usually crowded with people. I go to the end of the platform and wait for the train there as there are usually fewer people. I get on the train and if I am lucky I can get a seat, but usually, it is standing room only. Rush hour is always very busy. It takes me thirty minutes to get to work by subway so I try to read something on the way. I like to read novels, but I also like to read books about how to work more effectively. I think reading on the subway is a good use of my time. I get to my stop and I get out of the station. My office is only about five minutes from the subway station. On the way, I sometimes bump into people I know or work with and we have a chat on the way to the office.

Walk to the subway station

Usually takes fifteen minutes

Buy some snacks

Get to the subway station

When you have done all the above exercises, you need to talk about your routine as you make your way to school or work.

Or you could just use whatever phrases and vocabulary you know and just talk freely about your routine as you go to school or work.

You can practice in front of a mirror. But also try to talk about your routine in front of your class and teacher.

Morning at Work/School Routine

daily routine speech

So now you are at work or school. The day of studying or working begins.

  • What do you do in the morning?
  • What is the first thing you do at school or at work?
  • Do you do the same thing every morning at work/school? Or is there some variety?

Let’s look at some phrases you might need to use:

The first class begins at…

Check emails first thing…

Go to registration class at…

Get some coffee…

Think of any other phrases you might need to use in this part of the day.

We can now look at an example of a person talking about their morning routine at university.

If it’s a Monday, I have to be at college by nine am. I have a lecture every Monday morning. But the rest of the week, I don’t have classes until 9:30 or sometimes 10:00. So I can lie in for a bit on those days. I usually go to the student canteen first and meet my two friends there. We might have time for a cup of coffee but if not we go straight to the lecture. It lasts for an hour and then we go to the canteen and drink something and chat. Some days are busier than others. So on some days, I have many classes to go to. For example, this semester, Wednesday is the busiest day of the week. I have classes all through the morning with no breaks. I don’t stop until midday. I feel exhausted and I am ready for lunch and a rest. But other days are not so busy. Friday is a really relaxed day. I have my first class at 10:00 and that finishes at 10:50. Then I don’t have any other classes in the morning. I go to the canteen — students spend a lot of time in the canteen! — and then I go to the library and try to work on any assignments or essays I have to do.

Have to be at college

Have a lecture

Don’t have classes

Might have time for a cup of coffee

When you have done all the above exercises, you need to talk about your morning routine at school or work.

Or you could just use whatever phrases and vocabulary you know and just talk freely about your morning routine at school or work.

Noon Routine

daily routine speech

Most people have lunch at noon. I imagine you also have lunch. But do you do this every lunchtime? Or maybe, if it is a nice day, you like to go outside and walk around for some exercise?

Some people like to do some shopping or run some errands at lunchtime as it is the only time they have to do these things.

These might be the kind of phrases or sentence structure you might need:

Eat lunch at

Go to the usual place

Eat with colleagues

Go to the bank

Pay some bills

Now let’s look at someone talking about their routine and the things they do at noon.

In my school, we always have lunch at the same time — 11:45. The last class ends for the morning and all the students rush to the canteen for lunch. It’s always crowded and a bit crazy as all the students try to get their lunch at the same time. I sit at the same table as my friends. We are in the same class together. None of us likes the school lunch. It never tastes nice and we often have the same meals every week — pork on Monday, chicken on Tuesday, fish on Friday — so boring! After lunch, if it’s a nice day we stay outside and sit on one of the benches and chat about everything. The boys like to play football but all of us girls like to talk about things together. If it’s raining, we go back to our class and sit there and talk. Sometimes we might have a lot of school work to do and we go to the library to get it done. But that is not very common! Most of the time we prefer to relax.

Note: Read through the above extract two or three times. Read it out loud. What does the speaker tell us that they actually do every lunchtime?

To be honest, it is not a lot. They finish their last class for the morning, they eat lunch and then they sit around talking with their friends.

And this is the problem that many English students have. They might simplify all of the above and just say:

I finish my morning classes, then I have lunch, then I talk to my friends.

This is not good enough! Look at all the details the speaker provides above. That is what you need to think about when talking about your daily life and routine.

Always have lunch at the same time

All the students rush to the canteen

It never tastes nice

The boys like to play football

When you have done all the above exercises, you need to talk about your noon-time routine.

Or you could just use whatever phrases and vocabulary you know and just talk freely about your noon-time routine.

You can practice in front of a mirror. But also try to talk about your noon-time routine in front of your class and teacher.

Afternoon at Work/School Routine

daily routine speech

Afternoons at work or school could be almost the same as the mornings. But if your schedule has any differences then, of course, you should talk about that.

For those of you that have a near-identical schedule to the morning, it may be a little difficult to talk about. You can’t just say something simple like — same as the morning. You have to try to find something different in it.

These phrases might be useful:

Last class ends at…

I finish work at…

Feel a little tired in the afternoon…

Have a snack around three pm…

I stare at the clock…

Let’s look at something that a school student might say about their afternoon schedule:

The first class in the afternoon begins at 1:30pm. By this time, most of the students feel kind of tired. And we know that we still have until 4:00pm before we can go home. I am glad that I usually have PE class in the morning — I have more energy then and I look forward to it. So in the afternoon, I just sit in the class. I stare at the clock and wait for the day to end. It gets to 4:00 and the last bell rings. All the students let out a groan of relief. We all grab our bags and leave the classroom.

The first class in the afternoon begins

Most of the students feel kind of tired

I stare at the clock and wait for the day to end

It gets to 4:00 and the last bell rings

When you have done all the above exercises, you need to talk about your afternoon routine.

Or you could just use whatever phrases and vocabulary you know and just talk freely about your afternoon routine.

You can practice in front of a mirror. But also try to talk about your afternoon routine in front of your class and teacher.

On The Way Home Routine

daily routine speech

Some people have extra classes after school that they have to attend. Some people leave work and go out with friends. Some might go to the gym to work out.

  • What do you do after school or work?
  • Do you have any social engagements or evening classes?
  • Or do you just go straight home?
  • And if so, how is the journey home? Just as crowded in the mornings or a little less so?

We should look at an extract of someone talking about their going home routine.

I leave school around 4:00pm and then I have to run to the bus stop and catch a bus for my evening class. I hate the evening class so much but my mum told me I have to do it. So I study all day and then I have to go to another school and study English for two hours. I don’t finish until 7:00pm. By then, I feel totally exhausted. I get to the subway and go home. Because it is after rush hour there are much fewer people on the subway train, so I can easily get a seat. I sleep all the way home because I feel so tired.

I leave school around 4:00pm

I have to run to the bus stop

I have to go to another school and study English for two hours

I get to the subway and go home

When you have done all the above exercises, you need to talk about your going home routine.

Or you could just use whatever phrases and vocabulary you know and just talk freely about your going home routine.

You can practice in front of a mirror. But also try to talk about your going home routine in front of your class and teacher.

Evening Routine

daily routine speech

So now the day has ended and you have some time to yourself. You finish work and you can just relax and do all the things you like to do.

Unless you’re a student — in which case you may have tons of homework to do and articles to read.

What do you like to do in the evening?

Even if you are just sitting on the sofa and watching TV, you can talk about what shows you like to watch. Do you watch them alone or with your family or loved ones?

For this part, I think it might be a good idea to look at two different perspectives. One from a student who has homework to do. And one from a working person who just goes home and relaxes.

I get home and I change out of my uniform and into some comfortable clothes. The first thing I do after that is to get a drink of something. My mum usually keeps some of the things I like to drink in the fridge. Then I take out all my school books and the homework I have to do for that evening. I usually have about two hours of homework to do most evenings. It seems like a lot but I am used to it now. I put it all in order. I like to do the most difficult homework first, or the homework that I really hate to do. Then I end up with the homework I really like to do last. I like English so I always put that last. I might do a little bit of the homework and then my mum will call me for dinner. My dad doesn’t get home until much later. So me and my mum eat dinner together. She lets me watch some TV while we are eating dinner but then I have to get back into my room and finish the homework. I finish my homework and then I just feel really tired. By then I just want to sleep. But I take a shower and have a hot drink of something. I get into bed around 10:30 and read for a little while. Then my eyes start feeling heavy and I turn the bedside lamp off and go to sleep.

I change out of my uniform

The first thing I do after that is to get a drink

Then I take out all my school books

I like to do the most difficult homework first

Now let’s look at the next extract.

By the time I get home, it is about 7:00pm. I feel shattered. My wife gets home before I do. I change out of my suit and put on some comfortable clothes. Then we make dinner. We always try to share these kinds of things to do in the house. We eat dinner on the sofa, watching the TV. It’s not a good habit but we don’t care. It is time to relax. We usually stay up too late. We should really go to bed early so we are refreshed for the next day but we never do. I think most nights we go to bed around midnight. My wife likes to watch police drama shows. I don’t mind them so we end up watching those. But sometimes there might be a new movie and we will watch that.

By the time I get home, it is about 7:00pm

My wife gets home before I do

Then we make dinner

We eat dinner on the sofa

When you have done all the above exercises, you need to talk about your evening routine.

Or you could just use whatever phrases and vocabulary you know and just talk freely about your evening routine.

You can practice in front of a mirror. But also try to talk about your evening routine in front of your class and teacher.

Night-time Routine

daily routine speech

At night, most people get ready for bed. It might seem boring to talk about, but if you are talking about this in the IELTS test, you need to express as much as you can in English.

  • So what is your routine at night?
  • Do you shower at night?
  • Do you wash your hair and brush your teeth?

Maybe you read a little in bed before falling asleep.

Let’s look at one person’s night-time routine.

I try to go to bed around ten pm, so at that time I turn off the TV and the lights in the living room. I check the front door to make sure it is locked and secure and then I make some hot tea to take to bed. I brush my teeth in the bathroom. I don’t take a shower because I prefer to shower first thing in the morning. I take my tea to the bedroom and get into bed. I drink my tea and read a book for about twenty minutes. But soon I start to feel tired and then I have to put the book to the side, turn off the light and then I go to sleep.

I try to go to bed around ten pm

I turn off the TV and the lights in the living room

I check the front door

I drink my tea and read a book for about twenty minutes

When you have done all the above exercises, you need to talk about your night-time routine.

Or you could just use whatever phrases and vocabulary you know and just talk freely about your night-time routine.

You can practice in front of a mirror. But also try to talk about your night-time routine in front of your class and teacher.

Talking about your daily routine should not be too difficult as long as you think logically. Remember to talk about the sequence of events in order.

And make use of the right verb tense — simple present — and adverbs of time.

If you go over all the extracts that I wrote above, these should help you to speak about your mornings, afternoons and evenings.

Write down all the things you do — no matter how trivial you think they may be — and make a script out of them. Then practice by talking into a mirror out loud.

This will definitely help you.

I would love to hear about your progress — so please let me know in the comments below!

It is amazing how even the simplest things in life provide such rich vocabulary to second language learners. As you say, it only involves using the present simple. But the present simple is not as simple as it seems, so practicing it with lots of questions and negatives is essential for acquisition. I even love tag questions for practice.

Thanks Leona. Yes, tag questions are great for ESL/EFL students to practice too.

Speech on My Daily Routine

Everyone has a daily routine, right? Yours might be different from mine. Let’s take a peek at what I do from morning till night. It’s all simple stuff, nothing fancy, but it keeps me happy and healthy.

1-minute Speech on My Daily Routine

Hello everyone, today I am going to share with you my daily routine. I believe in the magic of ordinary days and how simple moments can bring joy and fulfillment in our life.

Let’s start with the morning. As the sun rises, I wake up and start my day with a smile. I believe that a smile can brighten up not just my day, but also the days of those around me. After freshening up, I go for a run. This is my way of thanking my body for keeping me healthy and strong.

Then comes breakfast, the most important meal of the day. I make sure it’s healthy and filling. I also make time to read a little. Books are my window to the world. They help me learn new things and keep my imagination alive.

Next, my work takes center stage. I focus on my tasks and give my best effort. After work, I often help out with house chores. This is my way of showing love and appreciation for my family. It’s not the big things, but these small acts that make a house a home.

In the evening, I take some time for myself. I might listen to music, draw, or simply watch the sunset. These moments of solitude help me relax and reflect on my day.

Finally, before I go to bed, I take a moment to think about my day. I am grateful for every little thing that happened. Then, with a peaceful mind, I drift off to sleep.

In summary, my daily routine is a blend of work, leisure, learning, and reflection. It helps me appreciate the simple moments in life and keeps me grounded. I hope my routine inspires you to find joy in your everyday life as well.

2-minute Speech on My Daily Routine

Good day, everyone!

Let’s talk about my daily routine. It’s a simple pattern, like the steps in a dance, that helps me live my life with purpose and joy.

The sun is my alarm clock. As it peeps over the horizon, I wake up. I start with a big stretch, followed by a quick drink of water. This helps wake up my body and mind. After that, I put on my exercise gear and head out for a run. The cool morning air, the chirping birds, and the quiet streets give me a sense of peace. This is also my time to think about the day ahead and make a plan.

Once I return, I freshen up and have breakfast. It’s usually something healthy like oatmeal and fruit. While eating, I read a book or listen to a podcast. It’s a great way to learn new things and start the day on a positive note.

Then, it’s time for work. I sit at my desk and sort out my tasks. I make a list of things I need to do and tackle them one by one. I also take short breaks to relax my mind and keep my focus sharp. I like to step outside and breathe in some fresh air or have a quick chat with my friends.

Lunchtime is next. I enjoy a meal that gives me energy for the rest of the day. Sometimes, I cook something special. Other times, it’s a simple sandwich. After lunch, I get back to work until the late afternoon.

Once work is done, I take some time to relax. I might watch a movie or play a game. I also love to draw, so sometimes I’ll spend time on that. This is my time to unwind and do things that make me happy.

As the evening comes, I prepare dinner. I enjoy cooking and find it a great way to relax. After dinner, I spend time with my family or friends. We might watch a movie together or just sit and talk. These moments are precious and help me feel connected.

Before I go to bed, I take a few minutes to reflect on my day. I think about what went well and what I could do better. It’s a good way to learn and grow. Then, I read a little bit of my favorite book until my eyes get heavy and it’s time to sleep.

That’s my daily routine. It’s simple, but it helps me stay healthy, happy, and focused. It shows how small, everyday actions can add up to a meaningful life.

Remember, your routine may look different, and that’s okay. The important thing is to find a routine that works for you. It should bring you joy, help you achieve your goals, and add a rhythm to your day. So, start thinking about your routine and make each day count!

If you’re an English as an additional language learner, being able to talk about your daily routine in English is essential to get other people to know you better. While there may be many routine activities that we all do such as brushing our teeth, going to school/work, and watching tv, other daily activities can tell a lot about our personalities. Imagine you get to know someone who likes watching comedies at home on weekends, and someone who likes going to nightclubs on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s not difficult to see that while the former is more laid-back, the latter is more of a party animal. Daily routine activities can reflect much about our personalities. Daily routine activities in English

An example of a text about daily routine activities.

During the week, I always wake up at 7.30 a.m. The first thing I do is turn off the alarm on my cell phone. After that, I quickly check my social media and my email inbox. Then, I get up, have breakfast, brush my teeth, get dressed, and comb my hair. I start work at 8 a.m. I can wake up at 7.30 a.m. because I work and study from home. When I’m ready to start work, I turn on my laptop. I teach English classes and study all day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. I only stop working and studying to have lunch at about 2 p.m. In the evenings, after finishing everything I have to do, I go running in a park near my house. It’s my time to relax! I love listening to music or podcasts when I’m running. When I come back home, I usually watch some tv shows, have dinner, take a shower, brush my teeth, get into my pajamas, and finally go to bed. I set the alarm for 7.30 a.m. The next day, I start everything again.

On the weekends, however, I don’t work or study. I usually wake up late, talk to my family and my friends, watch tv shows, play video games, and read books. Sometimes, I eat out. I love Japanese food, so I choose a new Japanese restaurant to try the food there. I also love going to the theater, museums, the mall, or to the movies, too. Sometimes, I go out with my friends in the evening. There’s nothing to worry about because I don’t have a specific time to go to bed on Fridays and Saturdays!

10 Paragraphs: My Daily Routine

Writing a paragraph about your daily routine provides an opportunity to reflect on the activities and tasks that shape your day. It allows you to convey a sense of structure, rhythm, and personal habits that contribute to your everyday life. Whether you want to document your routine for personal reflection or share it with others, writing about your daily routine can offer insights into your lifestyle, priorities, and goals. In this introduction, we will explore the essential elements to consider when writing a paragraph on your daily routine, emphasizing the importance of organization, detail, and self-expression.

Table of Contents

Tips On Writing A Paragraph On My Daily Routine

Start with a Clear Introduction: Begin your paragraph by introducing your daily routine. Provide a concise overview of your typical day, mentioning key activities or events that occur regularly. This introduction sets the context for the rest of the paragraph and gives readers an understanding of what to expect.

Include Relevant Details: When describing your daily routine, include specific details that make your paragraph more engaging and informative. Describe the time you wake up, your morning rituals, work or school-related activities, leisure time, and evening routines. Including specific details helps paint a clear picture of your daily life.

Organize Chronologically: To maintain a logical flow, organize your paragraph chronologically. Start with the beginning of your day and progress through the activities in the order they typically occur. This chronological structure helps readers follow your routine more easily and understand the sequence of events.

Highlight Significance or Impact: As you describe your daily activities, consider highlighting any particular tasks or events that hold significance or have an impact on your day. For example, you may mention activities that bring you joy, help you achieve personal or professional goals, or contribute to your overall well-being. This adds depth and personalization to your paragraph.

Conclude with a Summary or Reflection: Wrap up your paragraph by summarizing your daily routine or offering a brief reflection. This conclusion adds a sense of closure and allows readers to gain a deeper understanding of your daily life.

Paragraph 1

My day typically begins at 6:00 AM. As soon as I wake up, I like to start my morning with a refreshing glass of water followed by a quick stretching routine. Afterward, I head to the kitchen to prepare a nutritious breakfast, usually consisting of oatmeal and a cup of green tea. This healthy start to my day helps me feel energized and ready to tackle whatever comes my way.

Paragraph 2

Once I finish breakfast, I get ready for the day by taking a shower and getting dressed. Then, I make my way to work, which is a 30-minute commute by car. During the ride, I listen to my favorite podcasts or uplifting music, which helps set a positive tone for the day ahead.

Paragraph 3

My workday typically begins at 9:00 AM. As a project manager, I spend a significant portion of my day attending meetings, collaborating with colleagues, and ensuring that projects are progressing smoothly. I prioritize tasks, delegate responsibilities, and work closely with my team to meet project deadlines and deliver high-quality results.

Paragraph 4

Around noon, I take a break for lunch. I either bring a packed meal from home or grab a quick bite from a nearby café. During this time, I like to step away from my desk and recharge by going for a short walk outside, enjoying some fresh air and allowing myself a moment of relaxation.

Paragraph 5

In the afternoon, I dive back into work, focusing on tasks that require deep concentration. I tackle emails, review project reports, and engage in strategic planning. I find that this focused time allows me to make significant progress and accomplish important milestones.

Paragraph 6

At around 4:30 PM, I wrap up my work for the day and head home. During my commute, I often use this time to unwind by listening to audiobooks or podcasts on subjects I find fascinating, such as personal development or history.

Paragraph 7

Once I’m home, I make it a point to engage in some form of physical activity. Whether it’s going for a run, practicing yoga, or attending a fitness class, exercise helps me relieve stress and stay physically fit. Afterward, I prepare a wholesome dinner, which usually consists of a balanced mix of proteins, vegetables, and whole grains.

Paragraph 8

Evenings are my designated time for relaxation and personal pursuits. I enjoy spending quality time with my family, catching up on my favorite TV shows, or indulging in a good book. This downtime allows me to recharge and disconnect from work-related responsibilities.

Paragraph 9

Before bed, I follow a calming bedtime routine to ensure a restful night’s sleep. This includes dimming the lights, practicing a few minutes of meditation or deep breathing exercises, and reading a book. By winding down in this way, I set the stage for a peaceful and rejuvenating sleep.

Paragraph 10

Finally, as the day comes to a close, I aim to be in bed by 10:30 PM. Prioritizing a consistent sleep schedule is vital to my overall well-being, as it allows me to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to embrace a new day.

Before we go into the main list of phrases, we’re going to talk about how to use in , on , at  and other similar words.

This is a complicated topic, but there are a few things you should remember.

First of all, this video has a great general explanation about when to use these words, which are called prepositions :

The video talks about using these words with transportation, location and time, but in this article we’ll focus mostly on location and time.

There are some exceptions, but here’s how to generally use them.

Use at  with a general location or an idea

The most common uses of this are:

  • at the office
  • at the beach

When I say “work,” for example, I’m using “work” as an idea. I can also say “at the office,” but then I’m talking about the general area of the office. In other words, I might be in the break room, in the bathroom or even outside of the building, but I’m probably not inside my private office. If I’m standing inside my office, I’ll probably say in  instead of at .

The same is true for home , which is an idea, so you say “I am at home.” Meanwhile, house is the physical building that you walk in and out of, so you would say “I am in my house.”

Use in if you’re inside or contained within something bigger

The most common phrases with in  when talking about daily routines are:

  • in my house
  • in the office
  • in a restaurant

For most of these, the person talking is inside a building.

For example, I can say “right now I’m in my house,” because my house is a building and I’m inside of it.

But don’t forget that if I’m just in the general area, I may say at . For example, if I’m standing outside in my garden and talking on my phone with a friend, I may tell my friend that I’m “at” my house, but not “in” my house, since I’m not actually inside of it.

In  can also be used with cities, countries , states and other larger geographic areas. For example, you could say “I work in Los Angeles, in California.”

Use on  if you’re touching something or on the surface

This one is a bit more difficult to explain. Some examples of phrases with  on are:

  • on the second floor
  • on the beach (walking on the sand, but not in the water)
  • on the floor
  • on the roof
  • on the moon
  • on an island (for example, “I’m on   Long Island,” or “I’m on   Hokkaido.” )

You can use on anytime a person or object is touching the top or surface of something.

For example, I could say “My computer is on my desk, and there’s a picture of my family hanging  on the wall.”

In both cases, the object is touching another one, but not inside it.

Use on with specific days

If you’re giving an exact day , use  on.  For example:

We’ll meet on Monday, or maybe on July 15th.

Use  in with longer periods of time like months, years, and parts of the day

For example, you can meet  in July,  in  2023 or in the 21st century.

For parts of the day, the main phrases you’ll hear are in the morning , in the afternoon and in the evening . Note that the word at is usually used with night .

Use  at for exact times and with night

If you’re talking about an exact time , use  at . For example:

We’ll meet at 7:30 p.m.

Let’s meet at noon. (remember that noon  is 12 p.m.).

Use  at with night  in most cases:

I always work better at night than I do in the morning.

Okay, so now that we understand that, let’s start talking about the different parts of the day!

Most people start their days in the morning (unless they work at night or have trouble sleeping), so the morning is often the busiest time of day. That also means that there’s a lot of vocabulary you should know to talk about the things you do in the morning.

Early morning. Some languages have a special name for the period of time between approximately 12 midnight and 6:00 a.m., but English doesn’t. Instead, just say “early morning” or “ really early morning.”

Sunrise. This is when the sun appears in the morning, usually between 5 and 7 a.m. in most places. This is when the day starts. The word rise means “go up,” and we can also use it as a verb and say “the sun rises.”

Dawn. Dawn is another name for the period of time when the sun rises.

Mid-morning. Mid-morning isn’t an official time, but it’s about halfway between when you wake up and when you eat lunch.

Late morning. This refers to any time close to 12:00 (noon) but still before then.

From … to … . You’ll probably use this phrase to talk about many of your daily activities. If you do something for a period of time, you can use this phrase and mention the start and end time of that activity.

Jennifer works  from 7:00 a.m.  to 11:30 a.m.

At + (specific time). Like we saw in the explanation above, use  at if you’re talking about a specific time (but not a period of time).

Jennifer usually gets to work at 8 a.m.

On + (date or day of the week). Use on for specific days or dates.

I normally work on Tuesdays, but on January 1st I won’t have to work.

Our boss said no one had to work on New Year’s Day because it’s a holiday.

In + (month or year). Use in for longer periods of time like months , years and seasons .

We often start work at 8 a.m, but in winter the office opens at 9.

That “winter time” schedule starts in November this year, but we won’t do that in 2024.

In bed. This is the place where most of us start our day . You can also say “on the bed” if you’re sitting, but usually not if you’re laying down.

In the bedroom. This one is more logical. If you’re talking about a specific room in your house, office or any other building, you can say in, since you’re usually inside those rooms.

In the bathroom. Most people spend time in the bathroom as part of their morning routine. In the next section we’ll look at some of the most common actions people do there.

In the kitchen. This is another example of using  in with rooms.

At work. Many people start working in the morning. When they’re working, you can say they’re  at work .

At school. If you take any kind of class, you will probably spend some of your morning time   at school . In English, you can use the word school  for most educational institutions, including universities . But remember if you say “at   school,” you’re probably talking about the general area. You can also mention a specific area in the building, like in the lunchroom , in the gymnasium or in the principal’s office .

Using transportation. Generally, you’ll use the word in or on with most vehicles and by   with the type of transportation.

  • On + larger vehicles or one-person transportation. You can say:

on the train

on the airplane

on the tram / on the streetcar

on the ferry / on the boat

Note: You should also say on a bike , on a motorcycle or on a horse   because you’re on top of those things—and if you ride a horse to work, you probably have a more exciting job than I do!

  • In + smaller vehicles (or large ones). I’ll admit this is confusing. For all of the large vehicles in the last point, you can also say  in if you want, but it’s less common. So you can say “in the bus” or “on the bus,” but on is more common.  In is more common with smaller vehicles for only a few people. You can say “in a car,” “in a taxi” or even something more modern like “in an Uber.”
  • By + type of transportation. If someone asks you “How do you get to work?” you can respond with by and then the type of transportation. If you walk, you can say “by foot,” but there are many other options:

by public transportation

Mornings are usually a busy time, so there are a lot of common actions you’ll want to talk about then. You can also do most of these actions later in the day, so remember them when we’re talking about other parts of the day.

Wake up. This means to stop sleeping. When you’re sleeping, you’re asleep , and after you wake up, you’re awake .

Get up. This can be similar to wake up , but  get up means that you start to physically move your body. Most people get up when they leave their beds and start their daily routines.

Get ready. When you get ready , you do all of the things that you need to do to start your day. This can include different actions for different people, but now we’ll show you some common morning actions.

Take a shower / Take a bath. This means to clean your body. If you take a bath, it’s in a bathtub . Most people these days don’t take baths , but instead take showers . It’s also common to say “have a shower” / “have a bath” ,   especially in British English . The verb for all these actions is  to bathe .

Brush your teeth. This is when you clean your teeth with a toothbrush   and toothpaste .  Dentists also recommend that you floss  your teeth with  dental floss .

Comb your hair / Brush your hair. This is what you do with your hair (if you have hair). These words can be verbs or nouns. A comb is usually made of plastic and flat, and a brush is larger and usually circular.

Put on makeup. Some people put on makeup in the morning. Makeup  is different colored substances that people put on their faces to enhance or cover different parts of the face.

Get dressed. After finishing your morning routine, you probably put on clothes . That action is also called getting dressed .

Make and eat breakfast. Some people are rushed (they don’t have time) in the morning, but you should try to eat a healthy breakfast. It’s the best way to start your day! Some people also take breakfast with them or stop by a fast food restaurant  or café  to buy breakfast, and then they eat it on the way to work.

Go to work / Go to school. If you live far away, or have to drive or take public transportation, the process of going is also called commuting , and you can say “I have to commute to work.” Some people work from home, and they’re often called telecommuters or remote workers . Some people might also travel while working and are called digital nomads .

Those are the most common English words and phrases you’ll need to talk about your morning routine. Remember that you can use a lot of the vocabulary from this section at other times of day.

Noon is the most common word for 12:00 p.m. You might hear people say midday , but that’s usually a more general time.  Noon is more exact and much more common.

Because  noon is in the middle of work or school days, most people eat lunch around this time.

At noon. Because noon is an exact time (12 p.m.), we say at noon .

Lunch break / Lunch hour.  This is a period when people stop working or studying so that they can eat lunch. It’s usually around noon and about an hour long.

In the lunchroom / In the cafeteria / In the restaurant. These are different places where people often eat lunch. A lunchroom  is usually connected to a school or a company’s office, and it’s generally just for people who work or study there.

Another word for a lunchroom is a cafeteria . Note that a  cafeteria isn’t a place that serves mainly coffee (that’s a coffee shop ) or a small, informal restaurant (that’s a café ).

Eat lunch / Go out to eat. If you go out   or go out to eat , then you leave your office or school to eat somewhere else, usually a restaurant. You can also use the phrase eat out .

The afternoon starts at 12 p.m. (because it’s after noon, 12 p.m.), and it ends around the time it gets dark outside.

I don’t have any additional time vocabulary for the afternoon, so let’s look at place vocabulary.

Happy hour. This is a period of time when some bars or restaurants offer special prices on drinks or food, but it isn’t necessarily one hour. Bars and restaurants have happy hours  to attract customers, so happy hours are usually after most people stop working, but before they eat dinner.

Get off work. This is a phrase that means to stop working. You can also say stop working , but it’s more common to hear something like:

I get off work at 5, so would you like to meet me at 5:20 at the bar for happy hour?

Leave school. This is when you finish your classes and leave the school or campus.

Go out for dinner / Go out for drinks. This is like eating out for lunch, but usually after people finish working. If you go out for drinks or cocktails , you probably go to a bar or restaurant.

Buy a round of drinks. If you go to a bar for happy hour, you may want to be generous and buy a drink for all of your friends. If so, then you’re going to buy them a round of drinks .  You can say something like “I’ll get this round” or “This round is on me ”  if you’re offering to pay.

Go home / Get home. Going home  (or commuting home) is what most people do after work. When you arrive at your house, you can also say  get home . For ways to talk about the types of transportation, check the Morning section.

Study. If you’re doing any kind of work for your education, you can say that you’re studying . You may be writing an essay (a type of formal report or paper), practicing material you have learned or preparing for an exam. You can say I’m studying  for all of those things.

Hang out / Relax.  This is when you spend your free time doing things that interest you or spending time with your friends. It’s usually an informal time and an informal phrase.

Do homework. If you do homework , then you work on assignments that you have from a previous class. Note that homework isn’t countable, so if you have a large amount, you can say “I have a lot of homework .”

Work out / Exercise. These are two phrases that mean the same thing. They both mean doing physical activity to stay fit . You can work out at a gym, in your house or outside. You can also do exercise or just use exercise  as a verb, like:

I try to exercise every afternoon before dinner.

Make dinner. If you like to cook (and have the time), you might make dinner . That means to prepare the food for dinner. Some people aren’t interested in cooking (or they may not have time), so they can also  eat out for dinner, or even order food for delivery , which means that a restaurant brings the food right to their house.

I’ve noticed that not every language has a word like evening . In English, evening  is generally the period of time after the sun goes down (when it becomes dark), but before you go to bed. The pronunciation is sometimes a bit difficult. Note that it has two syllables, not three.

Sunset. Sunset is the time of day when the sun sets  (goes down or disappears). In most places, the sunset is between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., but it can change a lot depending on the location and the season.

Twilight / Dusk. These are two more names for the period of time when the day becomes dark. If you hear someone say the phrase “from dusk till dawn,” they mean during the night, and “from dawn till dusk ”  means during the day.

I don’t have any additional evening place vocabulary for you, so let’s look at some common evening actions.

There’s not always a clear division between afternoon, evening and night, so many people do these actions at different times.

Eat dinner. Dinner   is the last meal (serving of food) of the day. It’s also called supper  in some places, and  dinner can sometimes refer to a formal meal at different times of the day.

Watch TV / Watch a movie. You probably know what this means, but just note that if you go out to watch a movie , you can say “I’m going to the movies” or “I’m going to the movie theater .”  In British English , a movie theater is often called a cinema ,  and a movie  is often called a film .

Go out. This is a general term, but it means to leave your house to do something. You can use it if you’re going out for dinner or for drinks at a bar, or you may use it if you’re going out on a date , which is when you meet with someone who you’re interested in romantically .

Remember that this is the exception, so you normally say at night . You may hear some phrases that use in the night , but  at  is still more common.

Also, note that good night isn’t a greeting   ( a way to say “hello” ). If you say “good night” to someone, it’s like saying “goodbye” . You can also say it right before you go to sleep.

Midnight. This is at 12 a.m., in the middle of the night. It’s the opposite of  noon.

Get ready for bed. This is the reverse of what you do when you get ready in the morning. You may take off or change your clothes and maybe put on pajamas (or whatever you wear when you sleep). It’s also common to wash your face , brush your teeth and maybe take a shower . Some people like to read  or do other relaxing activities before bed.

Get things ready for the next day. If you’re a night owl (a person who’s more active at night) like I am and not an early bird  (someone who prefers mornings), you may want to do a few things at night to prepare for the next day.

You can set your alarm to wake you up   in the morning, set out things for breakfast the next morning or maybe lay out   the clothes that you’ll wear the next day. That way, you won’t have to make decisions when you’re tired in the morning!

Go to bed / Get in bed. This is when you physically move to your bed. It’s the opposite of  get up in the morning.

Go to sleep. This is when you stop being awake and start sleeping.

Sleep tight! This is a common phrase that people say, but it doesn’t actually make much sense. It rhymes with “good night,” so you may hear someone say “good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite!” ( Bedbugs are small insects that live in beds and bite people when they sleep.)

So how can you learn these words? One of the best ways is by using flashcards .

You can create these traditionally with the words you often use to describe your daily routine or create them with an app. A program like FluentU , for example, has authentic videos you can use to watch native speakers using these in action, then add them as flashcards to study with personalized quizzes.

If you remember and use these phrases, you should have no trouble talking about what you do during your daily routine.

Day or night, you can now talk about it.

55+ phrases to talk about your daily routine in English

Some people love routines, but others hate the idea of doing the same things every single day. Can you talk about your daily routine in English ? It’s really important that you can communicate about this using different verb tenses, especially present simple. This article teaches you how to use English phrases and verbs that help you communicate about your  daily routine in English . Plus, we will learn about the concepts of ‘early bird’ and ‘night owl’. Finally, we will review how to form sentences in the present simple tense in English and how to use the adverbs of frequency. Keep reading!

The present simple tense

This is the first tense we learn when we start studying English. The present simple is used to talk about repeated actions (I brush my teeth every morning), scheduled events (The bus leaves the bus station at 6 am, from Monday to Friday), and things that are always true (The Earth orbits the Sun).

In order to form affirmative sentences in the present simple tense, we use the base form of the verbs (except with the verb to be , which we explain down below). The only change is when forming sentences in the third person. We add -s to the verb with sentences with the pronouns he, she, and it. Take a look at these present tense examples :

Affirmative sentences

daily routine in English, simple present tense, adverbs of frequency

When creating negative sentences and questions, we will use the auxiliary verbs do and does . The main verb does not change.

Negative sentences

Forming questions in the present simple tense is easy. Just remember to use an auxiliary verb like do or does with your question.

Using the verb to be in the present simple

The present simple can also be formed with the verb to be . In this case, we would use the following structure:

The negative is formed by adding not to the sentence. We can also use the contracted form.

To make questions, we bring the main verb to be to the front.

[convertkit form=2182327]

Adverbs of frequency

When talking about your daily routine in English, it is common to use adverbs of frequency. We use them before the verb to express how often we do something. Some examples of adverbs of frequency are: always, usually, normally/generally, often, sometimes, occasionally, hardly ever/rarely, and never.

There are two exceptions when it comes to the position of the adverb of frequency in a sentence. When using the verb to be , the adverb must come after the verb. One example is “Judy is always late to work”. The second exception is related to the position of the adverbs sometimes and occasionally . Unlike the others, they can go in the front, middle, or end position of a sentence.

  • Sometimes , she drives to school.
  • She sometimes drives to school.
  • She drives to school sometimes .

The table below shows the adverbs of frequency list and examples of sentences about daily routine using the adverbs of frequency.

Sometimes, I do exercise too. Most of the time I walk almost 30 minutes and the doctor said that’s enough for me. This little workout keeps me strong for the rest of the day. I come back to home after the walk and get fresh again.

I eat my breakfast then. After eating breakfast, I study Math and Science in the morning time. I think morning is the best time to study.

Rise and shine.

  • Using the Bathroom/ Brushing Teeth

Getting Dressed

Ask questions, more please, getting ready for daycare/nursery school, time for bed.

Start your day slowly. Some mornings are challenging, but that’s okay. The goal is to be gentle and patient when waking your little one. Whether you start by showering them with hugs and kisses or start with a morning song, waking up on a good note is always a great start to a wonderful day.

Morning routine of a child

Using the Bathroom/Brushing Teeth

During this daily routine, work on the following directions or sequencing. (“First, we’re gonna go potty . . . Now, we’re going to wash our hands . . . Then we’re going to brush our teeth.”). A creative and educational way parents can do this is to have labels and signs around the bathroom for direction reminders.

You can start by giving them choices. (“Do you want the blue shirt or the green sweater?  Can show me the blue sweater?”)

Then, you can seize the moment to work on sequencing (“Let’s put our socks on . . . Next, let’s put on our shoes.”)

And of course, try to use descriptive words to further build their language skills. For instance, instead of saying “bring me your socks,” say “bring me your clean socks.”

Here are some examples of actions to teach toddlers while dressing them up:

  • Put on your socks
  • Take your shoes off
  • Pull up your pants

Breakfast Time

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for morning routines!! Making meals is a great way to practice speech. Get your child to speak about the food they are having for breakfast. Also, build their vocabulary by talking about the food taste and texture. (“Cereal is crunchy . . . Cereal can be sweet, etc.”) On top of that, if they are a little older, teach them about food categories. (“Cereals are grains . . . apples are fruits”).

Child eating in the kitchen

You do not want to overwhelm your little tot with too many questions . If you ask a few here and there you can grow their vocabulary. (“What are you eating? Do we use a spoon or fork to eat cereal? Can you show me the spoon? What color is your bowl?”)

Breakfast or dinner time can be a good opportunity for your child to work on the notion of requesting. For instance, if they want more cereal or milk, give them time to speak and say they want more. You can also create scenarios for them to ask for stuff. For example, give them cereal and milk without a spoon and wait for them to notice and ask for it.

As you get ready for the day, encourage your child to talk about different things they will learn or have already learned in school. It doesn’t matter if they choose to talk about the toys they like or the friends they get to play with, keep the conversations going.

Flashcards for toddlers

Bath Time

Have your child name or repeat the items they will be using during bath time . (Soap, water, towel, etc.) Also, you can work on action words while also teaching them about the body parts (“Let’s wash our head . . . we’re going to scrub our arms and legs . . . Let’s wash our tummy, etc.”).

Even more, try to get them to make comparisons and to make contrasts. (“Water is cold vs. water is now hot . . . wet towel vs. dry towel . . .”).

Bedtime routines. Sweet dreams!!!

Reading a bedtime story or making up one can be another way to expand your child’s vocabulary. While reading them a story, ask them to repeat words and describe pictures they see in the storybook.

Remember, when it comes to improving your child’s language, every minute counts. And spending time practicing during your daily routines for kids is one of the many ways you can reinforce their overall communication skills.

Verbal Routines for Increasing Language

verbal routines

We all have routines in our daily life: wake up, brush teeth, breakfast. As adults, we tend to follow routines without giving them a second thought. For our children, we begin to establish routines in early infancy, from feedings to bedtime, to help them gain a sense of predictability. But what about verbal routines?

Verbal routines are words that become predictable because you say them the same way, in the same activity, repeatedly. Common examples of verbal routines are statements such “1,2,3”, “ready, set, go” or favorite songs and nursery rhymes. Introducing verbal routines into your daily routines can be a great way to promote speech and language skills in children. Here are some ways you can incorporate verbal routines into your day:

  • “Rise & Shine!”
  • “Good morning, good morning, it’s time to start the day!”
  • “Brush, brush, brush your teeth, make them nice and clean!”
  • “It’s breakfast time!”
  • “Let’s get in the ‘Car, Car, C-A-R!’”
  • “It’s playtime!
  • “Clean up, clean up everybody, everywhere. Clean up, clean up, everybody do your share.”
  • “It’s dinner time!”
  • Pick a favorite family prayer, and say it before each meal
  • “Splish, splash, it’s time for bath!”
  • Say a favorite bedtime prayer each night
  • “Night, night, sleep tight”

Give an added bonus to your verbal routines by incorporating your child’s name or making your repetitive phrases into little songs or rhymes. As noted in our feature on children’s books with repetitive text , rhythm and rhymes allows words to be easily memorized and lets children anticipate the words that come next.

Next time you use a verbal routine, start it but don’t finish it, leave a pause and look at your child expectantly. Give your child the opportunity to fill in the missing word(s).

How will you incorporate verbal routines into your day? Ready, set, go!
