School versus Homeschooling

Some people believe that teaching children at home is best for a child's development while others think that it is important for children to go to school. Discuss the advantages of both methods and give your own opinion. Many people are in debate about whether children should be home-schooled or traditionally-schooled, and which of the two methods would be better for the child's development. While studying privately means the child will be getting a more focused and tailored education, traditional schools provide children with social and physical advantages that home-schooling does not. In this essay, I will discuss the benefits of both preferences and explain why I believe that children should be made to go into school rather than being restricted to text-book education. Parents who choose to get private tutors for their children tend to believe that they will be getting a better education and will be smarter than publicly educated children. This is because the one to one ratio means that the child is getting all of the teacher's attention, in comparison with public school where the teacher has to divide his/her attention between twenty or thirty different children. For instance, if a tutor see's that their pupil is struggling with algebra, it would be much easier to identify and address it. Whereas, in public schools the teacher might not know unless it is raised by the student or parent. Even then, it would be difficult to find the time and energy to help the individual student. In this aspect home-schooling might be more advantageous than public schooling. Nevertheless, the other components of child education and development should still be explored. Being taught with other children has numerous advantages that are often overlooked by supporters of home-schooling. One very obvious benefit is social interaction and its importance in dealing with strangers, learning social etiquette, building relationships and much more. Children who are given the opportunity to interact with other children and adults, will be far more socially advanced than those who are secluded to their homes. Furthermore, children who are publicly educated are able to explore and develop more interests than their privately tutored peers. For example, most school goers will play team games with their class at some point during their school years; through this they might find a new interest or hobby, they will be able to learn new skills, interact and experience competition but most importantly enjoy themselves. Through these interactions they also create relationships that extend beyond the school grounds. These are opportunities that can rarely be described for homeschooled children. The social components and fully experiencing childhood is fundamental to healthy development and must not be overlooked when choosing from the two options. In my opinion, the social advantages gained from public school surpass the academic advantages of home-schooling. This is because while the child will learn better if his/her classes are tailored to his or her need, they may never encounter the social experiences from which they can extract skills or enjoy the atmosphere of being with similar aged children. The aim of school is to prepare children for adult life and equip them with the skills they may need at that time, irregardless of whether they progress into academic disciplines or not. Education gaps can be corrected by parents at home or after school tutoring where necessary, meanwhile there is no substitute for the social benefits of school. In conclusion, parents choose which style of teaching best fits their expectations for their children. While some go with home tutoring, others go with traditional schooling; they both come with varying advantages. This essay discussed the main advantage of traditional schooling versus homeschooling in relation to the child’s development. It highlighted the academic benefits of private learning, as well as the social and personal gains of public school education, and explained why I think that traditional methods of schooling are far more advantageous than homeschooling.

Some people believe that teaching children at home is best for a child's development while others think that it is important for children to go to school. Discuss the advantages of both methods and give your own opinion. This topic is a point of contention amongst parents and teachers in today's ever changing world I think there are many advantages for home schooling one of the most important being a more flexible approach to training a child. A parent is easily able to adjust the difficulty of lessons to cater to the child's learning capacity and level. Home schooling could also involving self-training methods and many success stories in the world today are based on this especially in the world of tech and computer. A good example being silicon valley company founders such as Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs amongst others. The advantage being that sometimes the school curriculum is not quick enough to meet the speed at which areas in tech are moving with. Inspite of the strong points made by parents and tutors as to the importance of home schooling, as with most things, there is a myriad of reasons supporting a child's development from teaching in school. Principal of this being the fact that home schooling is an artificial representation of the real world and hinders children from developing useful skills required to deal with life when they grow. The reality is life does not wait for any one and if kids are made to believe that classes and therefore life will be tailored to their capacities only, then there would struggle to adapt to the real world when they become adults. An example of this can be seen when the children of celebrities who were home-schooled as kids but who struggle as adults and keep away from the outside world. I am of the opinion that schooling for kids is a delicate issue and should be handled with balance. I believe that it would be helpful for kids to attend school during term time, while during vacation period home schooling should come into effect to catch up with any gaps the child has versus school curriculum or advance their learning further. When deemed together, the success stories of home-schooling and the merits of going to school means it serves a better purpose combining the two.

Home Schooling Is Becoming Popular As More Parents Are Choosing To Educate Their Children In This Way

Sample essay

Over the last few years there has been an increase in the number of parents who choose to educate their children at home. Home schooling is becoming more popular because it is convenient and cheap. However, in my opinion, it is not as beneficial as regular schooling because it provides children hardly any opportunities to interact with their peers or the world outside.

Parents are increasingly choosing home schooling for their children because it allows them to study at a time and pace convenient to them. This is quite beneficial for very young children as they do not have to get up early in the morning and rush to school. Learning from the comforts of home is also suitable for students who learn at a slow pace. Another advantage of home schooling is that it is cheaper. If parents are educated, they can teach their children themselves and thus save a lot of money on school fee. Parents also have the option of tweaking the curriculum to suit the specific requirements of their child. For example, they can add an extra language to the curriculum or remove another subject that they think is not useful for their children.

Even so, in my opinion, regular schooling is more beneficial for the overall development of children. In a school, children get to learn from experts. Another advantage is the opportunities for social interactions provided by a school. A school is a microcosm of the world outside and in a school children learn a lot of invaluable life skills like the ability to interact with friends, peers and teachers. They learn to share, make friends, cooperate and compete with their classmates. Home-schooling does not provide any of these advantages. While it may be more convenient and cheaper it does not help to mold children into confident adults who know how to successfully conduct themselves in the world outside and solve problems.

In conclusion, home-schooling is becoming more popular because it is more convenient, flexible and less expensive. However, in my opinion, it is not as beneficial as regular schooling because it does not provide enough opportunities for social interactions.

Homeschooling

Paragraph A Homeschooling is a method of education where children do not attend a traditional school. Instead, usually parents take over the responsibility for the education of their children, either doing it all themselves or by using a company that specialises in providing homeschooling curricula and materials. Homeschooled children can excel in standardised testing and universities and colleges have no qualms about accepting them. Supporters also claim that because they have been trained early on to be independent learners, homeschooled individuals grow up to become reliable, resourceful individuals.

Paragraph B Homeschooling offers various benefits. Almost all homeschooling families say that homeschooling has played an essential role in bringing their family closer, as the time that parents spend teaching their children, and the time the children spend learning together, can foster a loving relationship in the family. Homeschooled children do not have to worry about bullying, peer pressure and spiteful competition, so their self-esteem does not have to suffer needlessly, and many parents with children who have been the target of bullying have resorted to homeschooling to protect their children from the harmful effects of harassment. Another key advantage of homeschooling is that parents and children no longer have to work their lives around homework and school hours. They usually accomplish in a few hours each day what typically takes a week or more to complete in a classroom setting. Because they spend more time in hands-on learning, homeschooled children can do away with homework, which is what usually keeps public schooled children up late at night. Additionally, families can schedule offseason vacations, go on field trips or visit museums, zoos and parks during the week as part of their learning experience. A more controversial benefit of homeschooling is that parents have frequently much more say in what is taught to their children, so that they can avoid subjects which they disapprove of.

Paragraph C Homeschooling is, however, sharply criticised in some quarters. A common criticism is that homeschooled children may not have as many opportunities to interact with other children in comparison to children who attend regular schools. Forming bonds and socialising with children his or her own age is important for a child’s developmental health and development of social skills. If homeschooled, children may be deprived of the chance to form friendships and may suffer socially. The lack of socialisation may affect them in later stages of life.

Paragraph D Parents choosing to homeschool their children may also be faced with the common problem of time. Parents need to set aside time to make it work. The task of homeschooling a child is certainly not easy, whether for working parents, single parents or stay-at-home parents. They have to take time to organise and prepare lessons, teach, give tests, and plan field trips. Also, in comparison to public schools, where education is free, homeschooling can also be costly, as purchasing the newest curriculum and teaching tools can be very expensive. Parents may choose to use a pre-prepared paid homeschooling program, but, in spite of the possible added benefits of such programs, they may increase the cost of the child’s education. There are also other costs to keep in mind, like project materials, stationery, books, computer software, and field trips.

Paragraph E There is also the issue of the different relationships between parents and their children and teachers and their students. Public and private schools provide for many children a safe haven, in which they are both regarded and respected independently and individually. Family love is intense, and children need it to survive and thrive. It is also deeply contingent on the existence and nature of the family ties. The unconditional love children receive at home is actually anything but unconditional: it is conditioned on the fact that they are their parents’ children. School, either public or private, ideally provides a welcome respite. Children are regarded and respected at school not because they are their parents’ children, but because they are students. They are valued for traits and for status that are independent of their status as the parents’ genetic or adoptive offspring. The ideal teacher cares about a child as an individual, a learner and an actively curious person. The teacher does not care about the child because the child is his or hers, and the child is regarded with respect equal to all the children in the class. In these ways, the school classroom, ideally, and the relations within it, is a model of some core aspects of citizenship.

Paragraph F A final criticism of homeschooling is that there is a public health risk. Children who attend public schools are required to have immunisations in order to begin classes. It is hard in many countries to ensure that mandatory immunisation is verified. Thus, deregulated homeschooling means that homeschooled children are basically exempted from immunisation requirements. The children are more susceptible to the diseases against which immunisation gives some protection, and others around them, particularly the elderly, are also consequently in danger.

Paragraph G Even given these potential harms, there remain good reasons to permit homeschooling in plenty of circumstances. Parents often justifiably wish to shield their children from public schools that too often ill serve children who are at risk of bullying, or who are hurt by the culture of middle and high schools. Some children also have special abilities or needs, or simply idiosyncratic learning styles or habits, and many of these children can best or even only be educated by those who know them best.

Some people say that children should be encouraged with a competitive feeling right from a tender age, and others say that children must be taught cooperation rather than competitiveness in primary school and high school. In your opinion, what should be the right approach?

Sample Answer 1 :

Young people are the hope and strength of every society who will one day run the nation with their intelligence and skills. Therefore, some people firmly believe that inculcating the feeling of competitiveness will pave the way for a better future. However, others are inclined towards imbibing in them the values of cooperation. Garnering the thoughts of C.S Lewis, “Education without values, as useful as it is, rather makes a man a more clever devil,” I too believe in the power of cooperation. Here I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both values.

Competitive values cannot be ignored in children, for they instil the zeal to excel in school as well as for their university degrees. It is the desire to surpass others that drives a child for the best academic performance. The competitive nature of school where students are awarded for their best among the rest of their performance accelerates their hard work in the right direction. Winning in any activity not just fosters a sense of decision making but also leads to fulfilment and self-achievement.

Moreover, competitive values infuse self-independence and self-confidence in pupils, which brings them laurels in academics, sports, cultural activities, and professionally. This stands true when children grow to become a vital part of a country’s growth. The qualities of governing, balancing work, and pushing the envelope harder to reach goals enable them to contribute to nation-building.

While competitive values provide children with the zest to become the best in their profession, it is needless to say that without the values of cooperation, their skills will not stand effective. Man is a social animal and the inherent need to stay connected with other people is what gives him a purpose in life. This is where cooperation offers children the art of teamwork, tolerance, patience and co-existence. Competitiveness without cooperation will eventually result in rivalry amongst peers that proves good for nobody.

In recent years, this has been evident from sports, where teamwork is considered to be the most vital element. Even the President of a nation needs his/her cabinet ministry for support at every level. While a place where none gets along with each other is doomed for failure, no matter the skills and knowledge. To conclude, after gauging both competitive and cooperative values, I strongly feel that both values carry their advantages and must be taught in conjunction to garner the benefits for children.

It is always a bonus when one activity has the capability to offer double benefits, and this viewpoint stands true for children’s leisure time that delivers educational benefits as well. This concept of amalgamating education with recreation is drawing the interest of not just parents but also academicians, who believe that the absence of learning while playing makes the whole experience pointless.

By the same token, I feel every child’s activity must have some educational value as a takeaway. This is further supported by the examples of the internet game Pokemon, which aims at imparting analytical and strategic learning.

Recreational activities are the gateway to the responsive and refreshed mind of children, and taking advantage of this to infuse learning can prove to be highly beneficial. Band 7+: Many people think homeschooling is better than traditional schooling for children's academic and social development. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

The past few years have seen a considerable increase in the number of families choosing homeschooling for their children instead of traditional schooling. While many people believe that traditional schooling plays a more pivotal role in children’s academic and social development than homeschooling, I strongly believe that homeschooling is a better choice than traditional one.

Firstly, a large number of parents choose homeschooling because of more attention from teachers. This stems from the fact that homeschooling allows for one-on-one instruction which is more and more beneficial to children than large classroom settings. To elaborate further, in a homeschool environment, the child can learn at their own pace and focus on areas in which they are struggling, without feeling embarrassed in front of their classmates. This eventually leads to improvement in academic outcomes. For instance, recent research by the Center on Education Policy found that children taking part in homeschooling showed significant improvement in academic outcomes than those in traditional schooling.

Secondly, homeschooling leads to a safer environment. In other words, homeschooling safeguards a child from external extremities like physical violence, sexual assault, drugs, and alcohol. For example, if there are multiple students in one traditional classroom, teachers will not be able to easily identify and correct any bullying or inappropriate behaviors. With the rising number of such cases in traditional schools, many parents have started to opt for homeschooling to protect their children from the external world.

Critics argue that traditionally schooled students have the advantage of getting social interaction, gaining more confidence in public speaking, and greater motivation. However, this argument overlooks the diverse social opportunities readily available to homeschooled children. Many homeschooling families participate in co-ops, clubs, community activities, and online learning communities, providing rich environments for socialization and peer interaction. Therefore, I am still inclined to assert that homeschooling yields more advantages than traditional schooling.

In conclusion, from my standpoint, I strongly contend that the benefits of homeschooling in children’s academic and social development far outweigh those of traditional schooling. As a result, I think it is no wonder that homeschooling is becoming an increasingly popular choice for parents worldwide.

IELTS Reading Passage – Homeschooling

Homeschooling

Paragraph A

Homeschooling is a method of education where children do not attend a traditional school. Instead, usually parents take over the responsibility for the education of their children, either doing it all themselves or by using a company that specialises in providing homeschooling curricula and materials. Homeschooled children can excel in standardised testing and universities and colleges have no qualms about accepting them. Supporters also claim that because they have been trained early on to be independent learners, homeschooled individuals grow up to become reliable, resourceful individuals.

Paragraph B

Homeschooling offers various benefits. Almost all homeschooling families say that homeschooling has played an essential role in bringing their family closer, as the time that parents spend teaching their children, and the time the children spend learning together, can foster a loving relationship in the family. Homeschooled children do not have to worry about bullying, peer pressure and spiteful competition, so their self-esteem does not have to suffer needlessly, and many parents with children who have been the target of bullying have resorted to homeschooling to protect their children from the harmful effects of harassment. Another key advantage of homeschooling is that parents and children no longer have to work their lives around homework and school hours. They usually accomplish in a few hours each day what typically takes a week or more to complete in a classroom setting. Because they spend more time in hands-on learning, homeschooled children can do away with homework, which is what usually keeps public schooled children up late at night. Additionally, families can schedule offseason vacations, go on field trips or visit museums, zoos and parks during the week as part of their learning experience. A more controversial benefit of homeschooling is that parents have frequently much more say in what is taught to their children, so that they can avoid subjects which they disapprove of.

Paragraph C

Homeschooling is, however, sharply criticised in some quarters. A common criticism is that homeschooled children may not have as many opportunities to interact with other children in comparison to children who attend regular schools. Forming bonds and socialising with children his or her own age is important for a child’s developmental health and development of social skills. If homeschooled, children may be deprived of the chance to form friendships and may suffer socially. The lack of socialisation may affect them in later stages of life.

Paragraph D

Parents choosing to homeschool their children may also be faced with the common problem of time. Parents need to set aside time to make it work. The task of homeschooling a child is certainly not easy, whether for working parents, single parents or stay-at-home parents. They have to take time to organise and prepare lessons, teach, give tests, and plan field trips. Also, in comparison to public schools, where education is free, homeschooling can also be costly, as purchasing the newest curriculum and teaching tools can be very expensive. Parents may choose to use a pre-prepared paid homeschooling program, but, in spite of the possible added benefits of such programs, they may increase the cost of the child’s education. There are also other costs to keep in mind, like project materials, stationery, books, computer software, and field trips.

Paragraph E

There is also the issue of the different relationships between parents and their children and teachers and their students. Public and private schools provide for many children a safe haven, in which they are both regarded and respected independently and individually. Family love is intense, and children need it to survive and thrive. It is also deeply contingent on the existence and nature of the family ties. The unconditional love children receive at home is actually anything but unconditional: it is conditioned on the fact that they are their parents’ children. School, either public or private, ideally provides a welcome respite. Children are regarded and respected at school not because they are their parents* children, but because they are students. They are valued for traits and for status that are independent of their status as the parents genetic or adoptive offspring. The ideal teacher cares about a child as an individual, a learner and an actively curious person. The teacher does not care about the child because the child is his or hers, and the child is regarded with respect equal to all the children in the class. In these ways, the school classroom, ideally, and the relations within it, is a model of some core aspects of citizenship.

Paragraph F

A final criticism of homeschooling is that there is a public health risk. Children who attend public schools are required to have immunisations in order to begin classes. It is hard in many countries to ensure that mandatory immunisation is verified. Thus, deregulated homeschooling means that homeschooled children are basically exempted from immunisation requirements. The children are more susceptible to the diseases against which immunisation gives some protection, and others around them, particularly the elderly, are also consequently in danger.

Paragraph G

Even given these potential harms, there remain good reasons to permit homeschooling in plenty of circumstances. Parents often justifiably wish to shield their children from public schools that too often ill serve children who are at risk of bullying, or who are hurt by the culture of middle and high schools. Some children also have special abilities or needs, or simply idiosyncratic learning styles or habits, and many of these children can best or even only be educated by those who know them best.

Homeschooling refers to the practice of education at home or any other place outside the school premises. Over the years, the popularity of homeschooling has increased quite a bit. It is much more convenient for both students as well as parents. It saves time, is efficient, and de-stresses children, unlike normal schools that distress children. But just like everything else, along with the pros, homeschooling too has some cons.

A lot of people believe that education in homeschooling is confined to home boundaries only. These students are not able to develop social skills and find it hard to socialise with others. Homeschooling is a concept that has been becoming quite popular over the years. Some of the benefits of homeschooling include convenience for both, children as well as parents. It provides tailor-fit learning education to children as every child has his/her own learning pace.

Homeschooling de-stresses children, unlike schools that distress them. But just like any other thing, homeschooling too has some drawbacks. One of the drawbacks that most concern parents is that their child would not be able to have social interaction. Children need to have social interaction in the early stages of childhood to develop their minds. Hence, it’s up to each child and parent whether to take up homeschooling or not.

Essay on Home Schooling in 250 words

One of the aspects that has been gaining quite a lot of attention and popularity is homeschooling. Over the years, it has been gaining quite a reputation of becoming an alternative to traditional schooling. Homeschooling is a good way to deliver tailor-fit education to children as every child has his/her own pace of learning.

So for children who are unable to cope with the pace of school education, homeschooling is a great option for them. Homeschooling is extremely convenient for both, children as well as parents. It saves time and money as well. The children who are homeschooled have to deal with less stress as traditional schooling gives them a lot of stress. By tracking the progress of their child on their own, parents get to understand their child better and hence make necessary adjustments for them.

But just like any other thing, homeschooling too has some drawbacks. One of the major drawbacks is that children who are homeschooled lack social skills. Having social international for children in their early stages of childhood is essential for developing their minds. Children who are homeschooled may even become introverts. Parents might find it stressful for them in the long run to have to homeschool their child if they do it on their own.

They might also not be able to have any time for themselves. Homeschooling is a choice that requires assessing the situation. It might be suitable for some, while others may not find it fit for them. Hence, the decision to homeschool should be made judiciously.

Over these past few years, the concept of homeschooling has gained quite a lot of attention. Especially in a time like the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become an alternative to traditional schooling for many parents. Parents can hire a tutor for the same or can even teach their children themselves. Homeschooling has a lot of pros for both, parents as well as children.

Pros of Home Schooling

Also for many students, the school environment can become quite stressful making it difficult for them to get comfortable and hence causing them stress. Homeschooling, on the other, de-stresses children. They are safe from even getting bullied and have the comfort of their own home. Parents get a chance to track their child’s progress and hence, get to know them better. Such a thing generates positivity all around.

Cons of Home Schooling

But just like any other thing, homeschooling too has some drawbacks. One of the major drawbacks that concern parents the most is that their children would not be able to have proper social interactions. Social interactions are very important in the early stages of childhood to develop a child’s mind properly.

Failure in that can even lead to a child becoming introverted. Some of the homeschooled children also face problems in mixing with others. For parents, depending on the situation, homeschooling can turn out to be costly as the tutors they hire may charge high fees from them. Parents may also find that they are not able to have time for themselves, which, in the long, can become quite stressful for them.

The decision of homeschooling shouldn’t be just opted for the convenience of it. Parents should take into account every scenario of their current as well as to some extent, their near future situations to make a correct decision. Hence, it would be fitting to say that the decision to homeschool should be made judiciously.

There is one view that suggests that children should be taught at home for their better development, while there is another view that suggests that it is essential for them to attend school. There are benefits attached to both views. Youngsters who go to school often develop better social skills, and they get better prepared for future jobs. On the contrary, children who are taught at home receive better attention.

Children who study in school tend to develop good social skills. A child studying in school interacts with different children. The young one learns to share things and how to work together. Furthermore, apart from the classmates, the child also gets the opportunity to interact with various people, such as teachers, workers, janitors and supporting staff of the school. This means the child learns how to meet and behave with other people, too.

In addition to the above, schools also prepare youngsters for future. School’s rules and regulations, such as dress code and timings, somewhat resemble with the code of conduct of jobs. Hence, the youngsters attending the school know well about the acceptable behavior in offices. Furthermore, they also learn to how to live without parents which will help them in future when they will leave their parents’ house to live in college’ dormitories.

Though there are some advantages in teaching children at home, but the advantages of sending children to school exceeds than teaching children at home. Thus, I am of the view that it is important to send the children to school because they will develop such skills which are necessary to survive in today’s world.

It is always good to include your opinion towards both issues in this opening paragraph.

Those children who are taught at home benefit from getting a proper attention from the teacher. These children easily understand whatever they are taught, hence, their understanding and learning skills develop better than those who attend school. Not only these, home teaching brings a major benefit to children needing individual attention and encouragement. If one child needs extra helps with math, then the private teacher could set schedule for such subjects and time allotted to teach this kid. This will reduce the pressure by a child suffering from math’s difficulties, and therefore would enjoy the lesson at home.

The fourth paragraph is lacks of supporting details. Asking journalistic questions: the 5 W's and H will help you assess most situations, whether you are creating claim, evidence, and/ or explanation as to support your topic sentence in this paragraph.

The first and second sentences beat around the bush. No overall progression is seen in this paragraph.

In conclusion, Though there are some advantages in teaching children at home, but the advantages of sending children to school exceed s than those of teaching children at home. Thus, I am of the view that it is important to I agree that send sending the children to school because they will help them develop such the aforementioned skills which are necessary to survive in today’s world.

You need to use a concluding signal, such as in conclusion, to sum up and any other expressions to show that you are about to end your essay.

Firstly, pupils staying in their comfort zone will give more freedom to express their opinions. In schools, students are restricted to talk while the class is ongoing, and young ones are reluctant to say a word; however, at home, they feel very confident to speak.
