Making a cleaner and nicer world starts locally. Once you are able to keep your own home neat and tidy, you can take the extra effort to work on beautifying your town with friends and neighbors. An organized clean-up effort and some good follow-up work can make a nicer world for everyone to live in. Help clean up your home and neighborhood, and keep it that way.

Things You Should Know

  • Contribute to the neighborhood's cleanliness by keeping your own home looking its best. Add plants, mow the lawn, maintain the sidewalks, and clear your storm drains.
  • Help out around your neighborhood by picking up litter, picking up after your pets, and reporting graffiti. You might even start a community garden!
  • Talk to your neighbors about organizing a clean-up effort to get more people involved. [1] X Trustworthy Source State of New York Official website for the State of New York Go to source

Keeping Your Home Clean

Step 1 Add plants.

  • Aside from looking good, plants take in carbon dioxide from the air and expel oxygen, making for a more breathable atmosphere.
  • Be sure to trim branches from bushes and trees if they begin to obstruct public walkways and paths.

Step 2 Mow your lawn.

  • Good lawn work will also involve pulling out weeds and take care of ugly brown patches. Don’t ignore those parts of lawn care.

Step 3 Maintain your sidewalks.

  • Many municipalities, especially cities, will fine property owners who do not keep their sidewalks clean and clear. A little bit of effort on your part will not only help your neighborhood clean, but prevent you from having to pay a fine.

Step 4 Keep your storm drains clear.

  • When putting your trash and recycling out, make sure that the lids are on tightly and that they won't get knocked over.
  • Don't blow or rake leaves and lawn clippings into the street.
  • Avoid using salt or sand on your driveway. When the snow thaws, the sand and salt will slow into the storm drain and pollute the waterways.
  • Avoid using fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides on your lawns. When it rains, these can flow into the storm drain too.

Helping Out Around Your Neighborhood

Step 1 Pick up litter.

  • Consider having a clean-up day where you and your friends go around your block and pick up trash.
  • Pay attention to lawns, bushes, and gutters. This is where most trash tends to collect.

Step 2 Pick up after your pets.

  • Be sure to take care of the plants. Work as a community to take care of the garden; don't rely on just one or two people to keep it flourishing.
  • Herb and vegetable gardens are a great way to give back to your community. This way, you can help your neighbors put food on their tables.

Step 4 Adopt a highway

  • Every state, county, and town government can have a particular set of rules for adoption and what it means. Make sure you check the process for applying and maintaining your highway.
  • Some cities also allow you to adopt bus stops as well.

Step 5 Report graffiti.

  • If you see graffiti on a local business, or other private property, talk to the property owner about cleaning it up. You may even be able to do it yourself. [9] X Research source
  • If you see someone doing graffiti, do not confront them about it. Tell the property owner or a local authority.

Step 1 Talk to your neighbors about a clean-up effort.

  • At this first stage, consider the roles some people will play in organizing, advertising, gathering supplies, and doing any of the things necessary to get the effort put together.
  • Don’t be afraid to talk to pre-existing community groups. Service organizations like the Shiners or Boy and Girl Scouts will probably be interested in helping to keep the neighborhood looking nice. Anti-crime organizations like Neighborhood Watch will probably be willing to deal with the aftermath of crimes like graffiti.

Step 2 Talk to your local government.

  • There is strength in numbers. Have several people contact your local government. You can also try putting together a poll.

Step 3 Plan your event.

  • You don’t want to think too big, like cleaning up the entire town. Instead, focus on picking up trash in a contained area like an alley, weed removal and landscaping for an abandoned field, or painting over graffiti. You’ll want something you and your team can accomplish in a day or a few hours, to make sure you get the task done.
  • Consider your location. Make sure that you will have a place for trash, and for people to park or arrive at the site easily. Be careful not to tie up traffic or cause trouble for other people in the area.
  • Gather your supplies. Make sure you have the right materials necessary to do the clean-up properly. If you are cleaning up a location, for example, make sure you have rakes, brooms, and shovels, as well as trash bags to hold what you pick up. Consider if you need heavy equipment, and make sure someone there is trained and licensed to use it. In all cases, you should have a first-aid kit handy.
  • If you are potentially going to deal with hazardous chemicals, you definitely need a plan for gathering those items and depositing them in the proper location. Make sure you are familiar with your town or city’s collection center, and are properly equipped for dealing with those items.

Step 4 Publicize what you are doing.

  • If you do post flyers, remember to take them down after the clean-up. You don’t want them staying there until they fall off and become litter.

Step 5 Perform the clean-up.

  • If there are young children or teens, make sure that they work in groups and have a trusted adult chaperoning them.

Step 6 Wrap up your event.

  • Once you are finished, consider some way to thank everyone who took part. A small pizza or ice cream party, or even just hanging out a bar (if you’re all of age) afterward can be a fun way to celebrate your success.
  • Think about your next event. Chances are your neighborhood will always have something else that you can do to help. Think about what worked or didn’t work about this clean-up effort, and find ways to improve for next time.

Community Q&A

Community Answer

  • If you are looking for a good time to get people’s attention for a cleaner neighborhood, Earth Day (April 22) can be a good choice. Set it as the first meeting of your Block Watch, or use it as a day to suggest a group clean-up effort. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Mostly, the environmental cleanliness is emphasized during prevention of pollution and health education in the society. Cleanliness of religion varies with the specific religion and its beliefs. The importance of cleanliness is realized in both spiritual and physical aspects. The society s place double standard on cleanliness such that, whatever is clean is admired and fought for.

Types of Cleanliness:

There are two major types of cleanliness i.e., physical cleanliness and spiritual cleanliness. Physical cleanliness has several subtypes according to the object being cleaned. Physical cleanliness involves elimination of dirt and impurities from the body, clothes, food, houses and the outside environment. Body cleaning is done through full body bath with soap and water, handwashing practice and keeping away from dirt. Cleaning clothes is a laundry process whereby manual washing by hands can be done or machine washing. Cleaning the environment is through collection of dirt in the environment and disposing them appropriately, while observing the purity of all the three aspects of the environment i.e., air, water and land. When handling food, cleanliness should be observed through hand washing and using of clean cooking and eating utensils so as to prevent ingestion of dirt. The houses and household items should also be kept clean especially the living space, the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms because we interact with the house environment more often.

Spiritual cleanliness is basically focused on the removal of moral contamination and being pure in the faith and beliefs of the religion. In Christians, cleanliness means the forgiveness of sin and living according to the Bible doctrines. Christians also have cleanliness of conditions considered impure for example menstruation and childbirth. Christians lay strong emphasis on hygiene in humans. In Islam, cleanliness means the cleanliness of hearts of individuals and the good manners of members of the society. Muslims believe that purification of hearts of individuals from feelings of negativity and bad vices like jealousy enables the society to stay peaceful at all times. Muslims also believe that cleanliness from conditions that are considered ritually impure is important. Hindus believe that cleanliness is a divine quality that should be practiced by individuals. Bhagavad Gita describes cleanliness with relation to the Hindu society virtues and qualities that individuals must acquire in order to be given grace by God. Hindus also perform cleanliness through visiting the seven rivers to bathe and purify their minds.

Cleanliness is a vital component of human life both physically and spiritually. Spiritual cleanliness is important in being on the right with your God and following the beliefs and rituals of your religion. On the other hand, physical cleanliness is important in the wellbeing and existence of humanity.

Cleanliness is necessary for health and wellness of individuals and the society. Health and cleanliness relate to each other and influence each other. In order to be of good health, one should practice hygiene. Hygiene is basically the practice of maintaining good health and preventing diseases through cleanliness. Cleanliness of the body, food and environment contribute to the wellbeing of an individual health wise. Cleanliness prevents disease because dirt usually harbors infective pathogens that cause disease to human beings when they get exposed to them. Hygienic practices are highly advocated for by health professionals because it is better to prevent a disease than to wait and seek treatment for it. Hygienic practices prolong the lives of individuals because they will be free of illnesses.

Safety is enabled through cleanliness of the environment. The environment that we interact with often needs to be clean so that accidents can be prevented. For example, in the workplace, daily cleaning will ensure that there are no water spills on the floor that could cause a fall. Clearing bushes around homes provide safety from harmful insects and animals like snakes. Cleaning not only involves the act of clearing bushes and washing floors, but also the organization of the environment. Through organization, harmful objects can be put away so that accidents can be prevented in the environment.

Brand protection can be achieved through cleanliness. In environmental cleanliness, buildings and the surrounding environment are cleaned and organized. As a marketing strategy, cleanliness is an advantage for the brand because it will portray the brand as organized and conducive for human interaction. In this competitive world, cleanliness is a priority consideration for brands. In the food industry, cleanliness is what people look at before they can engage because health well-being is important for individuals.

Cleanliness also enables the extension of a lifespan of an object. With tools and instruments, cleanliness is emphasized because dirt causes reduction of the lifespan like in metallic objects, rust causes destruction of the tools and instruments. In buildings, cleanliness also preserves the integrity and enables longer durability.

Cleanliness is a moral virtue that is admired. When a person is clean, social relations and interactions become easier because society views dirty people as a nuisance and they are inapproachable. Cleanliness is attractive and admirable in the society.

In conclusion, cleanliness in the lives of individuals is unavoidable. Everything surrounding the life of an individual is viable for cleanliness in order to maintain functionality and development. Spiritual cleanliness is mostly focused on purity of self before God and humanity in all religions although the methods of purification are different for each religion. Physical cleanliness is beneficial with regard to human interaction and with the environment in terms of health, safety and lifespan.

How do you help keep your neighborhood clean?

essay on how to keep our town clean

By The Learning Network

Students in U.S. high schools can get free digital access to The New York Times until Sept. 1, 2021.

A recent Times article profiled Taylor Mali, a Brooklyn man, and his quest to remove every plastic bag from every tree in the city. Two years ago, he began yanking down derelict plastic bags with the aid of a yellow metal painter’s pole.

The article describes Mr. Mali’s ongoing duty:

In his spare time, he continues his mission: ridding urban trees of garbage. Though New York City has outlawed some plastic shopping bags, he still has plenty of work to do; he noted that some types are still exempt, and “there’s no ban on Mylar balloons.” On a recent Sunday afternoon, as he prepared to do combat with a foe fluttering high in a London plane tree on Hicks Street, he offered a quote from the philosopher Edmund Burke: “Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little.”

What do you think of the Edmund Burke quote? Have you taken part in any neighborhood cleanups, either organized by a large group or on your own? How important is an individual’s role in keeping their town clean from garbage? Do you volunteer in another way to help improve your community?

Tell us in the comments, then read the related article to learn more about Mr. Mali’s quixotic task.

People can be helped to keep a place clean. These tips makes it easier for people to do the right thing and encourage them to be positively involved.

The tips focus on the interaction between the person using the public place and features of the place itself.

Tip 1: Maintain a proper cleaning routine – ‘clean equals clean’

Clean environments lead to less littering and more binning. People in areas that are kept clean are less likely to litter.

Tip 2: Make it easy

No matter what the system, it needs to be accessible, convenient and user friendly. Accessibility encourages the proper use of bins.

Tip 3: Develop a sense of responsibility

People can behave differently depending on the type of place and situation. Encourage personal responsibility by making it clear what your expectations are. Is there a carry in and carry out policy? Are there recycling or composting bins? Provide clear and polite messages, well designed and positioned bins and directions on how to use them properly.

Tip 4: Use sanctions and rewards

It’s important to respond to people’s actions, be they positive or negative. Both sanctions and rewards play a central role in developing and shaping disposal behaviour.

Tip 5: Reduce confusion & create predictability

Ensure all strategies and programs reinforce the same expectations in all situations. People in different situations need to know what is expected of them to be environmentally responsible.

Tip 6: Aim to include everyone

Involvement creates a sense of ownership which impacts positively on disposal behaviour. Tailor initiatives to promote participation from as many people as possible, including traders, staff and volunteers.

Tip 7: Integrate prevention strategies

Strategies need to be linked to all stakeholders across the system. Integrating all strategies (including infrastructure) enables different stakeholders to work together to form an effective unit.

Tip 8: Demonstrate commitment – ‘walk the talk’

Public place management plays an instrumental role in influencing disposal behaviour. Leadership needs to be sustained, promote a long-term vision and model the actions you are asking others to do.

These tips help keep community spaces clean. You can do a more comprehensive assessment of factors influencing disposal behaviour in individual locations using our Clean Communities Assessment Tool . Using the CCAT, you can dramatically improve the likelihood that your prevention program will succeed, as well as do a ‘before, during and after’ test of how effectively your litter prevention program is working.

How to Keep Your Neighborhood Clean

Living in a city can be both exciting and hectic. It’s full of life, but it can also be dirty, dull, or just plain dangerous. The best way to avoid the negatives is by maintaining your neighborhood with these ten easy tips!

1. Drop Litter in a Trash Can, Not on the Ground

2. bring reusable bags to the grocery store, 3. clean up after your pet, 4. don’t spill while eating outdoors, 5. don’t throw cigarette butts on the ground, 6. don’t drive carelessly on your block, 7. use recycled products when you can, 8. don’t pollute the water, 9. keep the streets clean, 10. keep your block safe and secure.

The easiest way to keep your neighborhood clean is by disposing of any litter you might have before going somewhere else. If you drop some food waste or a bottle on the sidewalk, pick it up and throw it away immediately!

Make sure you throw it into a trashcan with a lid. That way, animals won’t get at it and make a mess themselves.

This one is pretty simple: don’t forget your reusable bags when going shopping! Using plastic bags creates more waste that will end up on the street or in the water, either breaking down into small pieces or floating around until an animal eats them (which can kill them or make them sick).

Instead, bring your own bags (or better yet, a cart) to the store and use them over and over again.

If you have a pet, make sure to clean up after it when you walk through the neighborhood! Most people aren’t keen on stepping in dog droppings or cat litter because they can spread germs like salmonella.

Not only that, but animals will dig around in the waste if they smell something good to eat. There are many products available for this problem — just ask at your local store!

Even if you’re having fun with friends while eating outside, don’t make a mess! Don’t leave any trash on your table or nearby — take it with you and throw it away at home.

For trash like napkins and food scraps, make sure to either pick them up and dispose of them properly (or ask someone nearby to do so) or put them in the provided wastebaskets.

Remember how we talked about animals getting sick from eating litter? Well, a common culprit is cigarette butts. They’re small, and they burn out quickly, but don’t throw them onto the street or sidewalk!

Even if you don’t smoke, there might be someone around who does — and they might have dropped their cigarette without noticing.

Driving your car on the street is fine, but don’t do it carelessly! Don’t speed or drive erratically — you’ll just make a mess on the road, and people probably won’t be happy about it.

If somebody sees you acting recklessly while driving, ask them to call the police to hold bad drivers accountable for their actions.

Try to use recycled products while maintaining your neighborhood clean as much as possible! Biodegradable products are made from organic materials (like plants) and can decompose in soil naturally when done correctly.

If you’re building a house, make sure to use products like bricks and wood that can disappear without harming the environment. Plastic should only be used when necessary (i.e., recycling, transportation) because it never fully decomposes — not even photodegradable plastic !

There are many ways to hurt animals and plants in your neighborhood by polluting the water. Oil leaks and other chemicals can ruin aquatic animals’ habitats and threaten their lives since they’ll either get stuck in it or absorb the toxins.

Ensure you wash away any excess oil from your vehicle at a car wash so that it doesn’t contaminate the earth!

street

If you want to keep your neighborhood clean, ensure that the street is swept regularly. If it isn’t, debris will start piling up along the sidewalk and in gutters — especially during spring or autumn!

You may have heard of litterbugs, but there are also leaf bugs that could ruin parts of your town if they’re not taken care of. So contact the municipality street sweeping service and ask them to sweep your street at least once a month!

Last but not least, keeping your block safe and secure is an important part of keeping our town clean. You can do this by reporting any suspicious activity or unattended garbage to the police (i.e., kids smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol).

Also, make sure that there’s no graffiti on public property such as walls, sidewalks, and bus stops — it only takes a few minutes to paint over it with water and soap! If you notice that somebody else has already done so, thank them for helping out!

It’s not hard to take care of our environment and keep our neighborhoods clean — we just have to be mindful of the things that we do. By following these ten tips, you’ll be able to explore your community while helping to make it a better place!

Paragraph on Environment Cleanliness in 100 Words

Keeping our environment clean is very important. We need to pick up litter and throw it in the trash can. It’s like cleaning our room, but bigger. When we keep our surroundings clean, we breathe in fresh air and the place looks nice. We can plant more trees and flowers. They not only make our world beautiful but also give us clean air. We should not waste water because it is very precious. Remember, animals and birds also live in our environment. If we keep it clean, they will be happy too. Being clean and tidy is good for everyone and everything.

Paragraph on Environment Cleanliness in 200 Words

Cleanliness is important for our environment. Just like we keep our houses clean, we should also keep our surroundings tidy. When we throw garbage anywhere, it makes the place dirty and can harm animals, plants, and humans. It can also make the air, water, and soil unclean. This is not good for our health. Let’s imagine if we keep throwing waste, soon our beautiful parks, rivers, and streets will look like a big dustbin! We don’t want that, right? So, we need to take some steps. Firstly, always throw garbage in the dustbin. Secondly, recycle things like paper, plastic, and glass. Lastly, plant more trees because they help to clean the air. If we do all this, our environment will be clean and healthy. We will also feel happy to live in such a beautiful place. Remember, a clean environment is everyone’s responsibility. So, let’s start cleaning today! It’s not difficult. You can start from your home and school. Encourage your friends also to keep their surroundings clean. Together, we can make a big difference. By keeping our environment clean, we are also taking care of our Earth.

Paragraph on Environment Cleanliness in 250 Words

Cleanliness of our environment is a key aspect to maintain a healthy and happy life. To put it simply, environment cleanliness means keeping our surroundings, like our homes, schools, and cities, neat and tidy. It’s not just about picking up litter, but also about reducing the waste we create. When we don’t clean our surroundings, it can lead to health problems like allergies, infections, and diseases. Not only does a clean environment promote good health, but it also makes our surroundings look better and more inviting. To keep our environment clean, we should practice habits like throwing trash in bins, recycling, and not littering in public places. We can also plant trees, which help improve air quality and create a green, beautiful environment. Schools can organize clean-up drives where students can participate in picking up the trash around their school and community. This can teach them the importance of cleanliness from an early age. It’s also important for governments to implement policies that encourage environment cleanliness. They can do this by providing enough trash bins in public spaces, encouraging recycling, and educating people about the importance of cleanliness. At the end of the day, environment cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility. If each of us makes a small effort, we can make a big difference. Let’s all work together to keep our environment clean, healthy, and beautiful for everyone.

That’s it! I hope the paragraphs have helped you.

Avoid Using These Toilet Papers If You Want To Keep Your Septic Tank Healthy

O riginally penned as "Medicated Paper for the Water-Closet," the first patented toilet paper became commonplace in the late 1800s, and modern society has relied on this invention ever since (via Cottonelle ). Even hundreds of years later, you'd be hard-pressed to find a household without spare rolls of toilet paper, as even the most frugal individuals consider it a necessity. Seeing as it's a centuries-old product with no signs of going out of style, it's unsurprising that companies have found many ways to capitalize on toilet paper over the years. Throughout the 1900s, new toilet paper trends like multi-ply, colored, perfumed, and softer sheets were advertised to the public. However, with the introduction of many of these toilet paper innovations also came unprecedented septic system issues.

Homes that aren't on a city sewer are outfitted with septic pipelines, tanks, and drain fields, which break down solids in wastewater, removing them from your home. This system relies on a bacterial ecosystem, which thrives in the main tank by breaking down organic waste and "flushable" toilet products. This system is ingenious when households are careful about their flushing habits. Unfortunately, many of the re-formulated toilet papers aren't as safe for your septic system as you've been led to believe.

Soft Toilet Paper Is Plush To The Touch But More Likely To Cause Clogs

When perusing the aisles at your local superstore or grocery store, the softest toilet papers always have the most luxurious appeal. Sold under names like "Comfort Plus," "Extra Soft," "Extra Plush," "Ultra Soft," and "Ultra Plush," these toilet paper options often advertise that they are designed for comfort and are more absorbent than their standard counterparts. Many popular toilet paper companies like Charmin, Angel Soft, and even generic brands sell these two-ply rolls with multiple layers of plush paper.

As appealing as these extravagant options may seem, they aren't doing your septic system any favors. Soft toilet paper varieties are made from fresh wood pulp from hardwood and softwood trees, like most traditional toilet paper types. However, the wood pulp is also treated with mineral oils and paraffin, and double or triple-layered to make a thick and chemically-infused roll that prioritizes temporary comfort. The thickness and additional chemical properties of the paper mean you're flushing more products down your pipelines.

As you already know, bacteria is responsible for breaking down the remaining cellulose fibers that don't disintegrate in the water. Therefore, when you flush extra soft toilet paper, you're creating waste faster than it can be broken down. Many of the people that rely on soft or plush toilet paper do so because they have sensitive skin. You can always invest in a bidet to do the majority of the cleaning, so you only have to use a minimal amount of this luxurious toilet paper.

Strong Toilet Paper Is Reliable But Complex To Dissolve

Soft toilet paper's closest relative is "Ultra-Strong," which has a similar downfall to the aforementioned plush varieties. A top toilet paper company literally advertises this type as being "4 times stronger when wet." Although this may have an industrial appeal, it doesn't have promising connotations for your home septic system.

The idea behind extra strong toilet paper is that it takes fewer sheets to clean yourself since they are two-ply thick and woven in a complex quilted texture. This makes them harder to unravel and more resilient to moisture, making them more absorbent. In reality, these toilet papers are only septic-safe when used as intended, which is minimal. If your household members are unrolling multiple sheets during each bathroom break throughout the day, this extra thick toilet paper will slowly back up your septic system. This paper is also best utilized concertedly with a bidet, so minimal tissues are used and flushed.

3-Ply Toilet Paper Triples The Amount Of Paper You Flush

Since regularly using 2-ply toilet paper can lead to septic issues, it's no surprise that 3-ply toilet paper comes with many of the same risks. A step above plush and strong toilet papers, 3-ply toilet paper rolls are three times the size of a standard roll. They often boast of having both strength and comfort and are designed with quilted weaving that makes them especially durable and soft. This type of paper isn't as popular as 1- or 2-ply types, and depending on where you live and whether there's any demand, it may be difficult to come across.

Although many people love to splurge on superior toilet paper brands, there is a limit to what people are willing to spend. Since 3-ply packs are uncommon and contain more materials, smaller packages sell for higher prices. In addition to a high price point, these products are known to cause septic clogs if they aren't used with some consideration and moderation. In other words, if you have younger children or household members who use liberal amounts of toilet paper, you're setting yourself up for a backed-up system.

If you're one of those people who prefers the finer things in life, you can still use triple-strength paper. Just keep in mind that you won't need as many sheets and should limit how many you pull when doing your business. As mentioned previously, the less risky route is investing in a lower-ply paper that is more easily disintegrated by water.

Scented Toilet Papers Smell Nice Until They Disrupt Your Septic Ecosystem

Since toilet paper is used for unpleasant tasks, it's unsurprising that brands have tried to find ways to make this product more appealing to the masses. One of these approaches is to coat the papers in floral-scented essential oils, such as lilac and lavender. The fresh odor leaves your toilet and lower regions smelling far unlike your recent activities, but it comes at a cost. By using this type of paper, many people suffer from skin afflictions since the fragrant chemicals irritate sensitive skin around private body parts. None of these scented oils are overly dangerous on their own, as they include ingredients and compounds like alcohols, esters, and aldehydes, but they can cause dermatitis, rashes, and skin abrasions on sensitive skin.

If these chemicals are harmful to our skin, you don't want to imagine what they're doing to your septic tank. Remember, that any additional chemicals can harm the bacterial ecosystem that breaks down waste and toilet paper in your home sewage. Flushing alcohol, bleach, and aldehyde-coated paper products kills bacteria and increases your risk of a backed-up septic tank later down the road.

Instead of using scented toilet paper to freshen up after using the bathroom, you can rely on other methods. Once again, you may want to consider a bidet, which will freshen up your extremities using fresh, clean water. If you're worried about any smells you leave behind, you can use essential oils , potpourri, wax melts, candles, and other room fresheners (that don't spray directly into your toilet) to help mask any residual odors.

Dyed Toilet Paper Is Fun And Colorful But Adds Unnecessary Chemicals

Colorfully-dyed toilet paper is the equally harmful sibling to scented toilet paper. Instead of chemical-infused fragrants, it has chemical infused-dyes. Whether completely colored in a solid shade or emblazed with a printed novelty image, these paper sheets are decorated with additional chemicals that aren't good for your body or septic system. This is likely why colored toilet paper has gone out of style for the most part, and it's difficult to track down among the many bleach-white options.

You might wonder why toilet paper is white in the first place. Usually, such vibrant shades of white indicate that companies are bleaching their products for aesthetic purposes, but this sterile color is actually toilet paper's natural shade. Toilet paper is created from wood pulp, which is then treated with hydrogen peroxide and chlorine. This bleaching process removes lignin, a natural material in wood pulp, to soften paper for human use. Cellulose fibers also turn white throughout this process, giving toilet paper its soft bleached composition for complication-free wiping and flushing.

As mentioned previously, the fewer chemicals used to treat toilet paper, the less harmful it is to the bacteria in your septic system. Changing the toilet paper to any other color requires dyes and inks. Instead of using colorful toilet paper to elevate your bathroom's interior design, consider adding exciting hues through decorations that don't touch your nether regions.

Flushable Wipes Help You Feel Clean But Have Hidden Additives

When shopping for toilet paper, you'll often find flushable wipes in the same aisle or in close proximity. Despite what their name might imply, these moisturizing paper wipes aren't as easygoing as they might seem. These moist toilet tissues are toilet paper products with aloe, vitamin E, Polysorbate 20, Disodium phosphate, and other additives that make them refreshing and appealing to consumers. They may advertise being flushable, but it's important that you take a look at their base qualities that contradict this claim if you're on a septic system.

For starters, sodium benzoate is added to these wipes to prevent the growth and reproduction of bacteria on your own body. While this may succeed in keeping you physically healthy and clean, common sense dictates that you shouldn't flush this down your septic system where healthy bacterial ecosystems are vital. Flushable wipes also contain Polysorbate 20 and Disodium phosphate, which are chemicals that help retain the wipes' composition inside their packaging. These additive agents keep the wipes moisturized and in one piece, so they don't break apart while you're using them. Although this may be useful from a functional standpoint, you should think about what this means after they've been flushed.

They're built to eventually break down in your septic system, but they do so much slower than traditional toilet paper due to these additives. On a final note, these wipes are used alongside normal toilet paper, meaning you're putting twice as many paper products in your toilet. This creates more work for your septic tank, both quantity- and complexity-wise.

If you stand by your use of moisturizing toilet paper and don't want to omit this product from your daily life, luckily, there are septic-safe alternatives out there. Consider a toilet paper spray, such as the product featured on the TV show "Shark Tank." Pristine toilet paper spray is sprayed directly onto standard toilet paper, giving you a moisturized experience that is far less foreboding than flushable wipes.

Baby Wipes Are Gentle On Skin Not Septic Systems

Baby wipes are closely related to flushable wipes, with a few material differences that make them even less flushable. These pre-moistened products aren't made with dissolvable paper; they usually contain fabrics and plastics, with added detergents and chemicals that make them a septic system nightmare. Many people mistakenly believe that baby wipes can be flushed alongside toilet paper because they're used for a similar purpose. However, with their cotton, rayon, polyester, and plastic composition, these wipes wouldn't be flushable even in their base form. None of these products break apart in water, causing them to quickly clog plumbing lines. If they do somehow make it through the pipes and into your septic system, the moisturizing and antibacterial chemicals will prove fatal to the septic tank bacteria.

Whether you use baby wipes for your own needs or to take care of a young child, you should always throw them in the garbage and not down your toilet. If you're looking for an eco-friendly alternative to disposable wipes, there are plenty of reusable cloth options sold online and in local stores. Combining reusable cloths with antibacterial creams and warm water provides the same advantages as using baby wipes without the waste.

Facial Tissues Are Soft And Lightweight Until Wet

Tissues are even more lightweight than toilet paper, and their feathery feel creates the natural assumption that they're safe to flush down your toilet. This belief is incorrect. Tissues are made for standard trash disposal, not septic tanks. They are often manufactured with biodegradable cellulose fibers, similar to toilet paper. Although they are made from similar wood fibers and wood pulp, tissues have additives that make them resilient for other purposes, like blowing your nose and cleaning up small spills.

These additives do not break down when they come in contact with water, making them unsuitable for toilet disposal. Instead, they are highly absorbent, causing them to retain large amounts of moisture and clog bathroom facilities. In fact, top tissue brands, such as Kleenex, warn the public that their facial tissues are not designed or tested for flushing. They should always be tossed into the garbage rather than your toilet.

New Demands to Measure Emissions Raise Cautious Hopes in Pennsylvania Among Environmental Sleuths Who Monitor Fracking Sites

In 2007, a geoscientist at Penn State named Terry Engelder calculated that Pennsylvania could be sitting on more than 50 trillion cubic feet of accessible natural gas deposits. Engelder later revised his calculation upward, to 489 trillion cubic feet , enough to meet U.S. natural gas demand for 18 years. These massive numbers set off the fracking boom in Pennsylvania, leading to drilling across the state. Since the rush began, there have been 13,000 unconventional wells drilled in Pennsylvania.

Now, a new “astounding” calculation has caught the attention of the gas industry: A study from researchers at the National Energy Technology Laboratory shows the wastewater produced by Pennsylvania’s unconventional wells could contain enough lithium to meet 38 to 40 percent of current domestic consumption. Lithium is a critical mineral that’s an “essential component” of many clean energy technologies, including batteries for electric vehicles.

The study used chemical and production compliance data from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to estimate that approximately 1,160 metric tons of lithium per year could be extracted from this produced water , which is a combination of fluids used for fracking and water from natural formations underground that returns to the surface during the drilling process. The lithium in Pennsylvania’s produced water likely comes from ancient volcanoes that were erupting at the time the natural gas deposits were being formed. This volcanic ash contained lithium that eventually seeped into the water underground.

Please take a look at the new openings in our newsroom.

“The researcher community in the U.S. is really working hard to find the materials and methods that will enable us to meet our climate goals and decarbonize the economy,” said Justin Mackey, the study’s lead investigator. “Sometimes you might be surprised where that material actually comes from.”

The Marcellus Shale Coalition , an industry trade group dedicated to the Marcellus Shale formation, the natural gas deposit beneath Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and New York, reacted to the news with enthusiasm. “This scientific analysis by one of the leading energy laboratories in the world shows once again how abundant Pennsylvania natural gas can enhance America’s energy, environmental and national security,” the coalition said in a statement.

The United States currently relies on imports from Argentina, Chile and China to fully meet its lithium needs, and the demand for lithium is expected to rise dramatically as the clean energy transition accelerates.

Mackey, a research geochemist at the National Energy Technology Laboratory, said he had focused on lithium because it is a strategic material for the American economy and defense industries and because it has insecure supply chains. “We’re reliant on foreign entities like China and Chile and Australia to source these raw materials, but they’re critical to our economies,” he said. “And more importantly, they’re critical to decarbonizing the U.S. automotive fleet.”

He said the researchers were “shocked” that the highest concentrations of lithium found in the Marcellus “are comparable to lithium brine, to water that is actually being mined for lithium.”

“I think having more domestic sources of lithium is definitely a positive thing, especially if you don’t have to create a mine to exploit the resource,” Mackey said. Unconventional drilling waste is likely to be produced in large quantities for the foreseeable future, he said, and if remediating this waste safely could also be made economically valuable, that could be beneficial for the environment as well.

essay on how to keep our town clean

But other experts are skeptical about the potential benefits of the study’s findings, questioning the economic feasibility of extracting lithium from wastewater at scale and what kind of impacts this processing could have on the environment and public health.

“There’s a lot of unanswered questions. It’s a little early, I think, to get too excited. It’s certainly something that needs to be looked at,” if only because of America’s reliance on lithium imports, said John Quigley , a fellow at the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy and a former secretary of the Pennsylvania DEP and the state’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The costs of extracting lithium in this way are unknown, Quigley said, and that includes the costs of surmounting potential logistical challenges of processing and transporting wastewater that comes from well pads across hundreds of miles of land.

So far there is one Pennsylvania company, Eureka Resources in Lycoming County, working on lithium extraction from produced water. In 2023, the company announced it had successfully extracted “97 percent pure lithium carbonate” from wastewater and plans to incorporate the process at its three Pennsylvania facilities within the next two years.

Even if the process of extracting lithium proved to be cost-effective, Quigley said, it should not be used as a justification to keep drilling, though it was “inevitable” that the industry would try to use the finding that way. “It’s still not a reason to continue to drill, because it’s a waste product from fossil fuel extraction,” he said. “The economy has to be carbon free by 2050.”

Extracting lithium doesn’t solve the ongoing problem of what to do with the highly toxic wastewater produced by fracking, which contains salts, metals and radioactive elements. “There’s no way to clean this stuff up,” Quigley said. “You might be able to get something beneficial out of it. But you still have really nasty wastewater that you’ve got to get rid of.”

Quigley was reminded of previous claims made about the economic usefulness of the oil and gas industry’s wastewater in Pennsylvania. Spreading wastewater from conventional drilling on roadways to suppress dust was once considered “a beneficial reuse,” but now faces scrutiny for the risks it poses to the environment and human health, including water contamination and harm to aquatic wildlife. “That has proven to be a sham,” Quigley said. “Some beneficial reuses turned out not to be so beneficial.”

“You might be able to get something beneficial out of it. But you still have really nasty wastewater that you’ve got to get rid of.”

Shannon Smith, the executive director of FracTracker , a nonprofit based in Pennsylvania that analyzes the impacts of oil and gas development, wondered how the industry might use this finding to expand their operations in the state.

“I live in Pennsylvania, and we’ve been burned over and over and over by the industry,” Smith said. “Being so deeply embedded in this world, I know that when something sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true.”

“On the one hand, it seems like common sense. If they’re producing this dangerous waste, they should be obligated to at least make use of it how they can,” she said. But she worried if the U.S. became dependent on the Marcellus for 40 percent of its lithium supply, it would perpetuate fracking in Pennsylvania. Real climate solutions need to include a pathway to transition completely away from fossil fuels, she said.

Smith also questioned whether Pennsylvania’s regulators were up to the task of monitoring another extractive industry. “The most common sense interventions are not being taken to protect our health,” she said. “So why on earth would we trust them to manage a new lithium economy?”

Because water production from typical wells in the Marcellus declines by 80 percent within the first two years of operation, the study concluded that extracting the volumes of lithium described in this analysis “would require continuous addition of new Marcellus wells to supplant older, less productive wells.” The study pointed to “underdeveloped” north-central Pennsylvania as a place where some of those new wells could be drilled; this region “has some of the highest lithium concentrations included in our analysis.”

Mackey and one of his co-authors, Barbara Kutchko, said the finding was only a beginning step toward understanding how to help the country meet its lithium needs, and the costs and benefits as well as economic and technological considerations of extracting lithium from produced water still need to be studied in greater depth.

Quigley was cautious about speculating on what this finding could mean for Pennsylvania’s future. “I’ve seen too many stampedes that have ended up causing environmental and public health damage as well as economic losses,” he said. “People need to take a deep breath. It’s an intriguing finding. It needs a lot more work before it’s real.” Quigley said other clean energy technologies that do not rely on lithium are being developed, and while lithium ion batteries are seen as “state of the art” now, that may not be the case forever.

As Pennsylvania looks ahead, he worries that the lessons of the past have not been learned. The history of energy extraction in Pennsylvania is marked by long-term, unintended consequences triggered by the rapid adoption of new technologies, from the lingering aftereffects of coal mining in the 19th and 20th centuries to more recent harm caused by fracking in the 21st.

“A stampede toward lithium at all costs is not a smart move for the country,” he said. “And certainly not for Pennsylvania.”
