Section – A : Reading Skills (20 Marks)

Question 1. Read the following text.

1. We sit in the last row, bumped about but free of stares. The bus rolls out of the dull crossroads of the city, and we are soon in open countryside with fields of sunflowers as far as the eye can see, their heads all facing us. Where there is no water, the land reverts to desert. While still on level ground, we see in the distance the tall range of the Mount Bogda, abrupt like a shining prism laid horizontally on the desert surface. It is over 5,000 metres high, and the peak is under permanent snow, in powerful contrast to the flat desert all around. Heaven Lake lies part of the way up this range, about 2,000 metres above sea level, at the foot of one of the highest snow-peaks.

2. As the bus climbs, the sky, brilliant before, grows overcast. I have brought nothing warm to wear. It is all down at the hotel in Urumqi. Rain begins to fall. The man behind me is eating overpoweringly smelly goat’s cheese. The bus window leaks inhospitably, but reveals a beautiful view. We have passed quickly from desert through arable land to pasture and the ground is now green with grass, the slopes dark with pine. A few cattle drink at a clear stream flowing past moss-covered stones; it is a constable landscape. The stream changes into a white torrent, and as we climb higher, I wish more and more that I had brought with me something warmer than just the pair of shorts that have served me so well in the desert. The stream (which, we are told, rises in Heaven Lake) disappears, and we continue our slow ascent. About noon, we arrive at Heaven Lake, and look for a place to stay at the foot, which is the resort area. We get a room in a small cottage, and I am happy to note that there are thick quilts on the beds.

3. Standing outside the cottage, we survey our surroundings. Heaven Lake is long, sardine-shaped and fed by snow melt from a stream at its head. The lake is intense blue, surrounded on all sides by green mountain walls, dotted with distant steep. At the head of the lake, beyond the delta of the inflowing stream, is a massive snow-capped peak which dominates the vista; it is part of a series of peaks that culminate, a little out of view, in Mount Bogda itself.

4. For those who live in the resort, there is a small hall by the shore. We eat here sometimes, and sometimes buy food from the vendors outside, who sell kabab and naan until the last buses leave. The kababs, cooked on skewers over charcoal braziers, are particularly good, highly spiced and well done. Horse’s milk is available too from the local Kazakh herdsmen, but I decline this. I am so affected by the cold that Mr. Cao, the relaxed young man who runs the mess, lends me a spare pair of trousers, several sizes too large but more than comfortable.

Question 2. Read the following text. [10] 1. Man suffers from a distorted complex. He always considers animals as inferior beings only fit for exploitation. Man has been using domestic and wild animals for his selfish ends. Many animal lovers joined together to form the ‘Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’.

2. The society has been working for the well-being and welfare of animals for many years. Its main aim is to change the attitude and thinking of people towards animals. It is quite sad that animals continue to be ill-treated, tortured and killed according to the whims of the people. About 15% of the people entertain the belief that animals are man’s slaves. They use, misuse and torture them accordingly. About 50% of the people exploit animals for selfish ends.

3. Horses and oxen are used for transport, carrying loads and in agricultural activities. Dogs, cats and many birds are domesticated for fun, entertainment and convenience. Wild animals like elephants, tigers, lions and deer are victims of poaching and killing. Animals are forced to do acrobatic feats in circus shows. Unfortunately, about 35% of people don’t think about the animals at all. They are totaLly indifferent to them.

4. The Government and the animal lovers must work together to bring a change in the attitude of the people. Animals should not be killed and poached for fun, furs or financial gains. They should be treated with kindness, care and sympathy. Cruelty towards animals must be legally punished.

Hero of Indian History – Shivaji

Indian history abounds with the heroic deeds of heroes, like Shivaji and Rana Pratap. Shivaji is one such hero. He lived and died for the glory of the country. Shivaji was born in 1627 in the hill fort of Shivner in Maharashtra. His father was a Jagirdar. His mother Jijabai was a religious lady. She told him the stories of great heroes from the Mahabharat and the Ramayana. She made him ‘Shivaji the Great’. Guru Ramdas also influenced his life. In his boyhood, he learnt horse riding, swimming and the use of various arms and weapons. At the early age of seventeen, he collected a small army of loyal Marathas and trained them in guerilla war-fare. With their help he began to conquer one fort after another.

First of all, he won the fort of Toran. There he got much wealth and weapons. Then he built a strong fort of his own at Durg. Shivaji started attacking the Mughal territories. The Sultan of Bijapur sent a large army against him under Afzal Khan but he killed Afzal Khan tactfully with his claws of steel. Aurangzeb also sent Shaista Khan against him with a large army but he also lost the battle. Shivaji was always a sore in the eyes of Aurangzeb. In the later years, Shivaji became an independent king.

(B) Write a brief description of a live cricket match you once saw. Give a brief account of description in about 100 – 120 words. Answer:

An Interesting Cricket Match

Once I got a chance to witness a cricket match on our college ground last year. Our college played a cricket match against the team of another college of our city. The weather was fine. The spectators were sitting all around on the benches and chairs. Both the teams came on the playground on time. Two umpires also came there. The match began at the right time. The captains of both the teams came forward and shook hands. Then there was a toss. Our captain won the toss and decided to bat. The other team took to fielding. Our captain and Ramesh came as the opening batsmen.

Our captain hit several boundaries. After two hours first, our captain was caught behind the wicket. He scored eighty runs. Then Suresh came in to play but he went out very soon. Our whole team was out at two hundred and sixty runs. Then the other team started bating. Suresh and Sohan were our bowlers. They bowled very well. In the first over the players of the other team made ten runs and we became nervous. The opening batsmen scored hundred and twenty runs. But soon, a batsman was declared L.B.W. by the umpire.

After this the captain came out to bat. He was a very good batsman. He batted carefully and hit several boundaries. He was out after adding eighty runs to the score. But after this all the batsmen were soon bowled one by one. The whole team was out at the score of two hundred and forty runs. In this way our college team won the match by twenty runs only. There was a great rejoicing and clapping. Each team gave three cheers to the other.

At 7:30 p.m. we cut the cake and enjoyed the moment. Christmas is synonymous to winter chill, stars, wreaths, Santa Claus, plum cakes, carols and midnight mass at the church. Many of us were dressed in red to mark the celebration. The Carnival included several presentations by live band, light music filling up the ambience, jugglers, a photo studio meant for funny and memorable clicks, magicians, several games as well as food stalls offering scrumptious snacks. It was a very busy road and Sakshi was running late for her college. She was a punctual person but that day her friend made her late. Meanwhile, she got an urgent phone call. Seeing the urgency, she attended the call. She became so busy in her conversation that she became absent-minded and careless for a moment. Her one hand was on steering and in the other hand, she was holding the phone. All of a sudden she got a heavy jerk. There was a crash and her car had hit a pedestrian. The pedestrian was seriously injured. She was terrified. She called her parents but before their arrival, police had reached there. (iii) After reading the poem ‘The Road Not Taken’, can you detail the tone of the entire poem ? Answer:

He does not anticipate being any less conflicted then or any more satisfied with his choice. Question 9. Answer ANY TWO of the following three questions, in about 40 – 50 words. [3 × 2 = 6]

(i) In what way is Iswaran an asset to Mahendra? Answer: The only asset of Mahendra was his cook, Iswaran. He was quite attached to him. He never made any complaint. Besides cooking, he (Iswaran) washed his clothes, cleaned his house. He was well known for his culinary skills. Also, he had unconditional love for Mahendra. He travelled everywhere with him.

(ii) Where and why was grandfather going the next day ? The Adventures of Toto Answer: Grandfather was going to Saharanpur the next day. As he was a retired man, he was going there to collect his pension.

(iii) Parents were in a hurry to reach the fair but the child was delaying them. How ? Answer: The boy got distracted by toys sweets, joy rides which he wanted to buy or enjoy butterflies and dragon flies which he wanted to catch and flowers that he wanted to gather. And, out of pure innocence, he delayed his parents to reach the fair.

Question 10. Answer ANY ONE of the following two questions, in about 100 – 120 words. [6 × 1 = 6]

(A) How did young Bismillah develop his interest in Shehnai ? Answer: ismillah was fascinated watching his uncle Ali Baksh practising the Shehnai when he was only three. He was deeply fascinated by the music of Shehnai. Soon Bismillah started accompanying his uncle, to the Vishnu Temple of Benaras where Baksh was employed to play Shehnai. Bismillah picked up the finer nuances of Shehnai and practiced for hours on the banks of river Ganga. The themes of his music were deeply affected by the sounds of flowing water of the Ganga. At the age of 14, Bismillah accompanied his uncle to Allahabad Music Conference where Ustad Fayaz Khan patted his shoulder which inspired and encouraged him to work harder.

(B) Throw light on the central theme of the poem ‘A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal’. Answer: The central theme of William Wordsworth’s poem “A slumber did my spirit seal” revolves around the profound impact of death and its ability to create emotional detachment. The “slumber” that seals their spirit serves as a metaphor for the speaker’s experience of losing someone, which is explored in the poem. The idea of death as a transformational force that separates the living from the dead and causes a sense of estrangement is prevalent. The speaker’s spirit is cut off from the outside world and unable to feel the same emotions as previously, and memories of the lost person become blurry and distant. The theme focuses on the long-lasting impacts of loss and the speaker’s ongoing absence, illuminating the profound nature of death and its effects on the human spirit.

Question 11. Answer ANY ONE of the following two questions, in about 100 – 120 words. [6 × 1 = 6]

(A) Why do you think it was an easy task for the wise guru to evade the execution and gain freedom from the kingdom of fools ? Elucidate in about 100-120 words. Answer: When the king ordered to execute the disciple, he prayed to his Guru to save him. The Guru heard his prayer in his vision and appeared to rescue his disciple. First, he whispered something in this disciple’s ears and then asked the king to execute him first and the disciple followed suit, which puzzled the king. Knowing the secret, the king fell into the trap of his temptation and wanted to be the king in his rebirth. He went into the prison at night and set the guru and disciple free. In their place, he and his minister disguised themselves as the guru and disciple and got executed. Thus, the Guru managed to save his disciple, though it was not easy to handle such a situation.

(B) The little swallow fanned the seamstress boy to make him feel comfortable. This act of the swallow was full of compassion. Give a real life example of such an act done by you for someone. Write in about 100-120 words. Answer: The Happy Prince asked the swallow to take the ruby out of sword where it was hidden and give it to the seamstress, whose son was lying on the bed with fever. The swallow reached him and fanned the boy to give comfort to him. I also experienced such an act of compassion in my life. Once when I was going to my school, I saw an old man lying on the road side. He was badly wounded, blood was flowing from his body. I took him to the hospital but he had no money. So I called my father to come with money. I also called the son of that old man. Thus, I could save the old man’s life. Really, it was an experience of joy of doing good to someone else. It is every individual’s responsibility.

CBSE Sample Papers for Class 9 English: General Instructions

Students preparing to take the CBSE English final exam need to know the general instructions. The CBSE Sample Papers for Class 9 English mention the general instructions that every student needs to follow while practising the sample question paper.

  • The total duration of the CBSE Class 9 English paper would be 3 hours.
  • The maximum mark provided for the CBSE Class 9 English paper is 80. 
  • All the questions asked in the CBSE class 9 English paper are compulsory.
  • The CBSE class 9 English paper is divided into sections: Section A, Section B, and Section C. 
  • Section A consists of a total of 20 marks and objective-type questions asked in this section.
  • A total of 30 marks are distributed in Section B, and short answer-type questions are asked in this section. 
  • Section C of the CBSE class 9 English paper consists of a total of 30 marks and long answer-type questions asked in this section.
  • Students will have no overall choice in the English paper; however, they are provided with the internal choice in some short and long questions. The students have to attempt only one question in such internal choice questions.
  • Marks are indicated along with each question.

I.Sustainable development is an organizing principle for meeting human development goals while simultaneously sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services which the economy and society depend on. Sustainable development can be defined as the practice of maintaining the productivity by replacing resources used with resources of equal or greater value without degrading or endangering natural biotic systems. Sustainability

science is the study of the concepts of sustainable development and environmental science. There is an emphasis on the present generations' responsibility to regenerate, maintain and improve planetary resources for use by future generations.

II.Sustainability goals, such as the current UN-level Sustainable Development Goals, address the global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. Sustainable development can be thought of in terms of three spheres, dimensions, domains or pillars: the environment, the economy and society. The three-sphere framework was initially proposed by the economist Rene Passet in 1979. It has also been worded as economic, environmental and social" or "ecology, economy and equity". This has been expanded by some authors to include a fourth pillar of culture, institutions or governance.

III.The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The SDGs were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by the year 2030. They are included in a UN Resolution called the 2030 Agenda or what is colloquially known as Agenda 2030. The SDGs were developed in the Post-2015 Development Agenda as the future global development framework to succeed the Millennium Development Goals which ended in 2015. The 17 SDGs are: (1) No Poverty, (2) Zero Hunger, (3) Good Health and Well-being, (4) Quality Education, (5) Gender Equality, (6) Clean Water and Sanitation, (7) Affordable and Clean Energy, (8) Decent Work and Economic Growth, (9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, (10) Reducing Inequality, (11) Sustainable Cities and Communities, (12) Responsible Consumption and Production, (13) Climate Action, (14) Life Below Water, (15) Life On Land, (16) Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, (17) Partnerships for the Goals.

IV.Though the goals are broad and interdependent, two years later (6 July 2017) the SDGs were made more actionable" by a UN Resolution adopted by the General Assembly. The resolution identifies specific targets for each goal, along with indicators that are being used to measure progress toward each target. The year by which the target is meant to be achieved is usually between 2020 and 2030. For some of the targets, no end date is given. To facilitate monitoring, a variety of tools exist to track and visualize progress towards the goals. The intention is to make data more available and easily understood. For example, the online publication SDG Tracker, launched in June 2018, presents available data across all indicators. The SDGs pay attention to multiple cross-cutting issues, like gender equity, education, and culture. There were serious impacts and implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on all 17 SDGs in the year 2020.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change has emerged as one of the main environmental challenges facing the world today. As a result of climate change, the global mean temperature is estimated to increase between 1.4 and 5.8 °C (centigrade) by 2100. This unprecedented increase is expected to have a severe impact on the global hydrological system, ecosystem, sea level, crop production and related processes. The impact would be particularly severe in the tropical areas, which mainly consist of developing countries, including India, warned the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Like any other country, India too would be hit by temperature variations, like its adverse impact on agriculture and food production, water resources, forest and biodiversity, health and coastal management. This is in addition to the stress on the ecological and socio-economic systems that are already facing tremendous pressures due to rapid industrialisation, urbanisation and unscientific economic development.

Though global efforts are afoot to mitigate the impact of climate change and global warming, especially after the 2015 Paris Summit", the division still exists among the rich nations on its contributions to such efforts.

The ability of nations and their populations to tide over the crisis depends on their resourcefulness. While the wealthy could find funds for a retreat to safety, temporary accommodation and relocation, the poor might not be able to evacuate. Access to food, water and housing or energy might not be available or affordable to them. Those responsible for climate change are relatively insulated from its impacts, while those affected face greater adversities with limited resources.

The global organization Oxfam says, the world's richest 10% cause 50% of emissions and they claim over half of the world's wealth. Conversely, the poorest 50% of the population contribute roughly about 10% of global emissions and receive only about 8% of global income.

On the micro-level the impact of global warming and climate change on agriculture and healthcare greatly affects the poor, who do not have the wherewithal to survive its impacts.

Poor nations would have to bear the most severe impacts of climate change, as their dependence on agriculture and therefore, vulnerability to extreme heat is higher than rich nations.

* The Paris Agreement united almost all the world's nations-for the first time-in a single agreement on cutting the greenhouse gas emissions which are causing global warming. World is off track to meet Paris Agreement climate target.

SECTION – A (Reading Skills) (20 Marks)

Question 1. Read the following passage.

(A) Miniature painting is a traditional style of art that is very detailed, often referred to as painting or working “in miniature”. Because of their origins as illuminations, they are also painted to have as smooth of a surface as possible. Indian miniature paintings have always piqued global interest. Indian miniatures were profoundly influenced by Indian Mythological Literature and were executed as illustrations to texts or as individual paintings. They were small-scale highly detailed pictorial compositions, often providing a true record of the social and cultural life of the time.

(B) This time, Delhi’s National Museum has lent 101 such paintings from its collection to the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, for a month long exhibition. “Ram Katha”, the collection, chronologically captures the story of the Ramayana. “Ram Katha” is the narrative of Lord Ram, who is the 17th incarnation of Lord Vishnu’s 24 incarnations.

(C) The paintings done between the 17th and 19th centuries by artists from various schools of art in India, are themed on Lord Ram’s life. “The Ramayana, composed by Valmiki in Sanskrit is believed to be the first known narrative of Indian literature. The paintings based on Ram Katha come from north, central and the east of India,” says Vijay Kumar Mathur, the curator of the exhibition. It took him four months to curate the display from the museum’s collection of 500 odd miniature paintings depicting the Ramayana.

(D) The exhibits represent a matured movement in miniature art wherein the spirit of Ramayana has been researched upon and visualised in colours. “While this will be a treat for Indian spectators in Australia, it will also be a special way to introduce Indian culture among the Australian citizens” says Mathur. Starting on May 22, the exhibition will kick off the Festival of India in Australia. All major styles of Pahari paintings (Basholi, Chamba, Kangra and Bilaspur) are on display, while Rajasthani styles include Mewar, Bundi, Jaipur, Bikaner and Deogarh.

(E) There are representations from central Indian styles of Malwa, Orchha, Datia and Rahogarh, besides specimens of Mughal style from Bundelkhand, Deccani and Bijapur and classical folk styles of Kalighat are also on display. Most of these styles originated between the 15th and 19th centuries. Some of the noteworthy works include The Portrait of Ram (Basholi style, Pahari, 1730); Ram breaks Shiva’s bow in the court of King Janak (Provincial Mughal style, Orchha, Bundelkhand, early 17th century); Wedding of Ram and Sita (Mandi style, mid 18th century); Ram, Lakshman and the golden deer (Kalighat style, Bengal, late 19th century); and Hanuman with Dronagiri mountain (Rahogarh style, Central India, late 18th century).

(F) The “Ram Katha” exhibition was first held at the National Museum in 2013. The same year it travelled to the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels, where it was on display for six months.

(A) The Amazon rainforest is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. It covers an area of almost 2.8 million square miles, which is nearly the size of the continent of Australia. The Amazon rainforest gets its life from the majestic Amazon river, the world’s second largest river, which runs directly through the heart of the region. The rainforest itself is simply the drainage basin for the river and its many tributaries. The vast forest consists of four layers, each featuring its own ecosystem and specially adapted plants and animals. The lush region provides important benefits to communities living near and far. Nearly 500 indigenous communities call the Amazon rainforest home. It’s a highly biodiverse ecosystem, home to untold species of plants and animals. The rainforest can create its own weather and influence climates around the world.

(B) It is one of the most diverse ecosystem in the world, home to 10 per cent of the world’s species, according to the World Wildlife Fund. There are more than 2.5 million species of insect that scuttle through the leaf litter. It contains roughly 1,300 bird species, 3,000 species of fish and approximately 430 species of mammals, according to National Geographic.

(C) These animals play an important role in keeping the rainforest healthy. For instance, important nutrients from the carcasses, feces and food scraps deposited by mammals leech into the forest floor. This nutrient influx helps soil microbes better store carbon instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.

(D) More than 40,000 plant species have been found in the Amazon rainforest. Many of them have important medicinal uses or are found in the foods we eat. Chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, pepper and coffee are grown in the rainforest. Rubber trees produce a sticky, white latex sap that holds our planet together and provides a source of income for indigenous communities living in the rainforest. Thus, the Amazon plants play an active role in regulating the ecosystem.

(E) The forest floor is the lowest region. Since only two per cent of the sunlight filters through the top layers to the understory, very few plants grow here. The forest floor, however, is rich with rotting vegetation and the bodies of dead organisms, which are quickly broken down into nutrients and integrated into the soil. Tree roots stay close to these available nutrients and decomposers such as millipedes and earthworms use nutrients for food.

(F) The understory is the layer above the forest floor. Much like the forest floor, only about 2-5 per cent of the sunlight reaches this shadowy realm. Many of the plants in the understory have large, broad leaves to collect as much sunlight as possible. The understory is so thick that there is very little air movement. As a result, plants rely on insects and animals to pollinate their flowers.

(G) The layer above the understory is the canopy. This is where much of the action in the rainforest occurs. Many canopy leaves have specially adapted leaves which form “drip tips”. Drip tips allow water to flow off the leaves which prevents mosses, fungi, and lichens from occupying the leaves. Leaves in the canopy are very dense and filter about 80 per cent of the sunlight. The canopy is where the wealth of the rainforest, fruits and flowers grow. Bromeliads, cup-like plants, provide drinking pools for animals and breeding locations for tree frogs.

(H) The Amazon rainforest plays an important part in regulating the world’s oxygen and carbon cycles. It produces roughly 6 per cent of the world’s oxygen and has long been thought to act as a carbon sink, meaning it readily absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Hope you are feeling better now. It’s nearly 10 days you haven’t been to school. During these days, you missed a chance of inter-school drama competition, which took place in our school auditorium on 16th Feb. Nearly six top schools of Agra took part in it. E-lindi film actor Mr. Amol Palekar was the chief- guest from Mumbai. Three dramas in English and three dramas in Hindi were played altogether. Each school was given one drama to play. Our school had to act on Shakespeare play, “The Merchant of Venice”. I was lucky enough I got the role of Portia the main character. Suresh acted as Antonio, Rahul acted as Bassanio and the top negative character of Shylock was acted by Jeetu. Only the court scene was acted. Our English teacher, Mr. Ramnath Prabhakar, deserves all the credit for the success of the play. He worked nearly 6 – 8 hours every day to practice the scene along with dialogues with each one of us. We also went to sir’s house to practice in the evenings.

My role of Portia was highly appreciated specially the dialogues on, “Mercy”. People applauded a lot. But the greatest news is that our school won the competition. I got the award for the best actress from Mr. Amol Palekar, a trophy and a certificate, which I will show you once you are back to school. I wish you were there at that very moment. Give my regards to uncle and aunty and love to Ananya. Waiting to see you in the school soon.

Question 6. Write a short paragraph on ’If I were invisible’. Answer: Every once in a while, we are surrounded by a thought that what if I was invisible. There are so many things one could do being invisible, it just depends on our creativity and thought process. But if I am ever blessed with the power of invisibility, I will use it positively. I can monitor crime being invisible no one would know I am there and, in this way, I could catch the criminals. I can visit forests without being afraid of the animals. I can help people by monitoring if the services at hospitals, NGOs, etc. are carried out properly. I can visit factories to see if they have appointed child labour or if their workers are working in a degraded environment and can get them reported. Being invisible will give me the power to see the world differently. Everything will seem transparent as I can witness it all. It would be great if an ability like this would be used in a positive way to abolish crime.

You have recently moved to a new neighbourhood in your city. Describe the new neighbourhood comparing it to the one you have just left. Answer: A good neighbour makes our life sweet whereas, a bad neighbour does not make our life very good. I have recently shifted to a new house in a new locality which seems to be far better than the previous one where we once lived. The new house is good with many facilities and has a wonderful and pleasant neighbourhood. Here, everybody is literate and everyone is working. We also have got a nice park and a gym nearby, which are the main attractions. There is a bank in the market, grocery shops, small restaurants and medical shops, which are very close by and approachable. Even transport facility is pretty good. There are buses that will take you to different parts of the city. The railway station is at a 10-minute walk from my house.

In the earlier locality, we were not lucky enough to have a good neighbourhood. Early in the morning people used to quarrel among themselves. All the children were very naughty. They used to break the glass doors, windows and cars, they would spoil our garden by plucking leaves and flowers. In our new neighbourhood, we all live in peace and harmony. In case of any kind of emergency to any resident, we all come forward to help that person. I have many friends in my new neighbourhood and we all enjoy playing in the evenings. We celebrate every occasion and festival and this makes it lot more fun and enjoyment for all of us in the neighbourhood. All of us have a feeling of sharing our happiness and sorrows together. Nothing is personal in our lives. We are not just neighbours but we all have unitedly become a large family. In conclusion, I can say that the place where I live is calm and peaceful and it is a delight to live with happy neighbours.

The circumstances that led John to marry Jessie are almost similar to the story of the novel. It reveals how a reader is influenced by the bestsellers. John placed himself in the place of the protagonist Trevelyan and imagined what it would be to have a romantic love life like him. His own life was nothing but a romantic novel. He married Jessie, quite unknown to him who belonged to a family of belted earls, just as the hero of the novel got married to a princess.

(B) Do you think Bill Bramble was cut out to be a professional boxer on all counts? Answer: Bill Bramble’s character reveals that to be a professional boxer one need not be violent by nature, especially with the people in one’s private life. So as far as his profession was concerned, he was a tough boxer to fight with. This is evident from the admiration millions of people had for him, and from the way newspapers liked to cover his achievements. So his nature and his profession can be considered as absolutely contradictory to each other. But his ability to hit his fellow-man in the eye while apparently aiming an attack on his stomach, and vice versa, had won him laurels. Among the London’s teeming millions there was not a man, weighing eight stone four, whom he could not overcome in a twenty-round contest. Thus, in my opinion he was surely cut out to be a professional boxer on all counts.
