For India and Pakistan, Cricket Is Never Just a Game

It’s one of the greatest rivalries in sports, when war off the field allows it — a contest of national identities that will be renewed this Sunday in a World Cup match.

essay on world cup cricket

By Mujib Mashal

NEW DELHI — The event will be watched by hundreds of millions around the world, on televisions in remote villages, jumbo screens in crowded cities, phones in migrant labor tenements and flickering monitors in the living rooms of a diaspora spread across the world’s time zones.

Face-offs on the cricket field between India and Pakistan , like the expected encounter on Sunday in Dubai, have become increasingly rare, a victim of the frosty relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. For a match to take place at all, even on neutral ground, players and fans have to hope tensions remain short of war and that the organizers can weather growing calls for a boycott.

The meeting on Sunday, the first in two years, comes as part of a World Cup. The rising tensions are tied to a number of factors — repeated militant attacks in India; the disputed territory of Kashmir, where India accuses Pakistan of supporting militant groups; and rising intolerance in both countries — that have almost entirely wiped out any exchange between two nations that otherwise overlap in shared history, passions and culture.

But the intensity of passions surrounding Sunday’s match draw on deeper reservoirs, issues of national identity that are wrapped into the fortunes of the competing cricket teams.

And despite calls for a boycott from Indian political leaders after a spasm of violence recently in Kashmir, the game is going ahead. As India’s cricket organizing body has made clear, the country cannot simply opt out of an international commitment like this one, the T20 World Cup — especially one where its team is favored to win.

“We need to maintain a cricketing bond,” Ramiz Raja, who leads the Pakistan Cricket Board, said after meeting his Indian counterpart. “Our stance is, ‘The further politics remains from cricket, the better.’”

But in cricket, a game that can appear bafflingly complex to the uninitiated, it is precisely those political fault lines that generate such passionate interest.

Cricket in South Asia is a legacy of British colonial rule — “an Indian game accidentally discovered by the British,” as the critic Ashis Nandy once said. The end of that rule saw India partitioned in 1947, creating Pakistan as a new nation for tens of millions of the region’s Muslims.

In the 75 years since, the two countries have gone to war several times, and have remained on a war footing when not fighting. Sometimes, the tensions have meant the cricket teams didn’t play each other for a decade or so. Other times, such as during the 1999 World Cup, they played a match even as they waged a war over Kashmir .

“It’s tempting to draw parallels between the story of cricket and the story of India,” Amit Varma, who hosts the popular podcast “The Seen and the Unseen,” said in a recent episode . “We started out uncertain of our place in the world, trying to find our feet, hobbled by an inferiority complex, looking for pride in small consolations, but eventually opening up to the world and asserting ourselves.”

“Our cricket has flourished to a point that India dominates this game, especially in a commercial sense,” Mr. Varma added.

India has become the undisputed destination for the sport in recent years, with top players from the around world seeking to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League. The league is among the top five most profitable sports leagues in the world, and top players can make as much as $2 million for a two-month season.

But in a sign of the tense times in the region, Pakistani players are barred from joining the league, depriving them of a major platform to compete with the world’s best — or to cash in on some of the riches. The two countries largely cut off bilateral ties after a deadly terrorist attack in Mumbai in 2008 by assailants who had come from Pakistan.

That the occasional games have been played only in neutral venues for a decade has done away with a major vehicle of interaction between the two cricket-crazed nations.

Indian and Pakistani players have often said that every time they play in the other country, the intensity on the field is matched only by the hospitality off it. Vendors in bazaars would refuse payments, while the families of the host players would send home-cooked food to the visiting players in their hotel rooms.

“I had hosted the whole Indian team at my house — a full spread, of kababs and all,” Shahid Afridi, the former Pakistani captain, recalled of one tour more than a decade ago. “When they arrived, I found out they were all vegetarians. I had to quickly scramble for lentils and vegetables.”

Vicky Luthra, who runs a photo studio in New Delhi, is such a dedicated fan that he has watched India and Pakistan play four times, including traveling all the way to England in 2017, where the match ticket alone cost him about $400.

“I cannot paint my face, I cannot do every drama. I am a gentleman audience of cricket,” Mr. Luthra said, smilingly. “But I definitely always wish good luck to India.”

The game he most fondly remembers is when he crossed the border on foot in 2006 to watch India play in the Pakistani city of Lahore. He was excited to go — his grandparents hailed from the part of the country that ended up in Pakistan — but his wife insisted she would not let him travel alone.

“My wife was very much against going to Pakistan,” Mr. Luthra said. “But she was surprised by how good it was, how friendly the people were. It was because of cricket I got to see those parts.”

For Pakistan, too, the story of its cricket team at times mirrors the state of affairs in the country — bursts of brilliance and talent undermined by mismanagement, uncertainty and lack of opportunity.

Pakistan has been the underdog in recent years, with India dominating the World Cup face-offs while compiling an undefeated record. But in the 1980s and 1990s, Pakistan had the kind of talent that could win bilateral matches frequently, creating heartbreak for the Indian team’s massive fan following. The country’s current prime minister first made his name in cricket; he led Pakistan to the World Cup crown in 1992.

This year’s tournament comes at a time when the mood in Pakistan is “sagging,” their cricket chief, Mr. Raja, said.

Following a militant attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in 2009, Pakistan went a decade without hosting a single international match. International teams have slowly begun touring the country again. But just weeks before the World Cup, New Zealand abruptly called off its tour because of security concerns, and England soon followed suit.

In the Pakistani port city of Karachi, fans prepared for the T20 World Cup match with hopes that their team could finally reverse India’s domination.

Cricket has many formats, including a “Test match” that can run as long as five days, and still end in a tie. But the T20 World Cup is the shortest, each match lasting about three hours, so the results are more easily swayed by a brief spell of brilliance.

“The pocket Qurans are out, the memorized holy words are recited and hands are raised for prayers,” Ebad Ahmed, a journalist based in Karachi, said about some fans seeking divine intervention. “The idea is to bring God to our team’s side.”

No matter the Pakistani team’s chances, the game will be a publicly shared experience even for people like Muzamil Ali, a 33-year-old sales professional who confessed he didn’t even like cricket. Nevertheless, when it’s India and Pakistan, most people can’t help but watch — and Mr. Ali plans to take it in on a big screen outdoors.

“Watching a Pakistan-India match with a crowd is not only fun,” Mr. Ali said, “but also it is better to share grief with others in case Pakistan loses.”

Zia ur-Rehman contributed reporting from Karachi, Pakistan.

An earlier version of this article misstated the surname of the host of the podcast "The Seen and the Unseen." He is Amit Varma, not Verma.

essay on world cup cricket

‘A metaphor for life’: Bollywood’s stormy love affair with Indian cricket

Bollywood has had a rocky relationship with cricket over the decades, often reflecting India’s changing society.

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh attends the premiere of the movie 83, based on India's first Cricket World Cup victory in 1983

New Delhi, India – For years, Pravin Tambe, a leg-spinner from a middle-class family in Mumbai, toiled away in company and club teams with the singular goal of playing first-class cricket.

He kept going, even as he aged and other players began to refer to him as “uncle”.

‘i expected better’: why so many empty seats at india’s cricket world cup, india drives cricket’s olympic inclusion, but minnows hope to hitch a ride, in cricket-crazy kashmir, the india-pakistan world cup clash tests emotions, ‘the bjp’s world cup’: india’s modi wields cricket as a political weapon.

Then in 2013, at the age of 41, he was discovered and signed by former Indian captain Rahul Dravid to play for a professional franchise cricket team.

In the 2014 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), while playing for Rajasthan Royals, Tambe took a hat-trick against Kolkata Knight Riders and was named man of the match. He went to the dressing room and wept.

His story was dramatised in the 2022 Bollywood biopic Kaun Pravin Tambe? (Who is Pravin Tambe?), whose character was played by actor Shreyas Talpade.

When Talpade auditioned for the role, his career was not going well.

“I was told that some people weren’t sure whether I’d be able to pull it off,” Talpade, now 47, told Al Jazeera.

He practised hard to convincingly play the leg-spinner from the ages of 20 to 41. His body ached, and one evening when he was feeling particularly low, Talpade and his wife watched Iqbal, his 2005 Bollywood film.

In Iqbal, Talpade played the fictional lead character, a deaf and mute village boy obsessed with playing cricket for India. Despite Iqbal’s disability, his father’s disapproval and no formal training, he persisted and, as happens in all good sports films, human spirit and grit triumph in the climactic sequence.

“[I watched it] just as a reminder – not only about the story of this guy, but also to myself – that I’ve done this before and I can do it again,” he said.

Talpade triumphed too. He got to play Tamble, and cricket transcended from being just a sport to become – as many Indians say – a “metaphor for life”.

People still come up to Talpade to tell him that when they are “feeling down,” they often watch Iqbal.

“The underdog factor is probably the crux. It’s very high on energy and motivation,” says Talpade.

The story of Indian cricket is the story of India, of Talpades and Iqbals, of men and women struggling with poverty, caste, class and gender discrimination, yet rising from gully cricket to play for the country – which is hosting the 2023 Cricket World Cup .

Bollywood, India’s “dream machine”, has always reflected the mood of the nation by drawing inspiration from real life – including from cricket, although it has had a rocky relationship with the sport.

“Cricket and cinema really are two religions in this country,” says Kabir Khan, one of Bollywood’s top directors whose last film, titled 83, was about India winning the World Cup for the first time in 1983.

“Having said that, we probably should have had more cricket films.”

Indian Bollywood actor Shreyas Talpade

The long cricket-Bollywood ‘jinx’

Bollywood’s love affair with cricket began on a sticky wicket in the late 1950s, when a black and white film, Love Marriage, was released.

That was a time when cricket was played professionally only in its longest form – Tests – over five days. Though the game and cricketers were very popular, the slow pace of Test cricket did not particularly lend itself to on-screen drama.

Love Marriage was about love, but it cast cricket as cupid, making the young heroine fall for her dashing tenant when he scores a century.

For several years after Love Marriage, there was no cricket on the silver screen. But in the 1970s, when India beat England in England, and the West Indies in the West Indies – where batsman Sunil Gavaskar, having scored 774 runs in his debut Test series, was celebrated with a calypso song – cricketers became stars and even began appearing in films.

Gavaskar sang, danced and screamed “I love you” in a Marathi language film, and Salim Durani, a dashing Afghan-born Indian all-rounder known for hitting boundaries on fans’ demand, was cast as the romantic lead in a rather dreary Bollywood film, titled Charitra (Character).

Although these films did not do well at the box office, Bollywood began warming up to the idea of releasing cricket-related films around big tournaments and wins to cash in on the cricket craze.

INTERACTIVE---Venue-in-ICC-Cricket-World-Cup-2023-1695798518

In the 1980s, after India won their first World Cup , two cricketers from the winning squad were cast in a Bollywood film: batsman Sandeep Patil played the romantic interest of two women in a film, titled Kabhie Ajnabi The (We Were Strangers Once), with wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani playing a baddie.

In the same decade, two terribly tacky films, whose fictional plot involved a rivalry between cricketers, were also released. One was a romantic melodrama, and the other, Awwal Number (Number One), was plain bizarre. Its climactic sequence involved two helicopters and a cricketer, miffed at being dropped, trying to blow up a pitch where an India vs Australia match was under way.

“The cricket [in these films] was lame,” Vasan Bala, a Bollywood writer-director, told Al Jazeera.

“Growing up, we just knew that cricket and Bollywood never work. It was a completely jinxed thing.”

One film changed that.

The film that broke the jinx

Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India, directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar with Bollywood star Aamir Khan in the lead, was released in 2001.

It was a massive hit and was nominated in the Best Foreign Film category at the Academy Awards.

Lagaan did not win, but it broke the jinx at home. It also split India’s cricket-in-cinema story into two – the drought before Lagaan, and the deluge after.

Set in the 1890s during the British Raj, in an Indian village that is reeling under drought and heavy taxation, the story of Lagaan (Tax) was not just about cricket. It was about colonial injustice, caste discrimination and moral conviction.

The film’s fictional story took inspiration from the first “all-Indian” cricket team that toured England in 1911.

The three-hour-and-38-minute long film was about what a ragtag team of poor villagers — Hindus, including, a disabled Dalit man with a natural spin, a Sikh, and a Muslim — do after a British officer challenges them to a game of cricket: “Beat us and no tax will be levied for two years. But if you lose, the tax will be tripled.”

It was a classic David versus Goliath story with a bit of romance and nationalistic fervour thrown in.

“Lagaan was a very clever film … I remember watching it in a theatre where the entire cinema hall became a stadium,” said director and cricket buff Srijit Mukherji, whose biographical drama on Mithali Raj, a former captain of Indian women’s cricket team, released last year.

Lagaan came a year after cricket had suffered a devastating blow. In a shocking match-fixing scandal, then-India captain Mohammad Azharuddin was implicated along with others. The skipper, whose graceful batting and popped collar once stood for stylish integrity, had betrayed fans and tainted cricket.

“In Lagaan, the excitement was not about cricket. The excitement was about watching characters whose life depends on this game,” Bala says.

Lagaan’s motley crew of cricketers went some way to restoring faith in the game and spawned a whole new generation of cricket films, including several lookalikes in Bollywood and regional cinema that were set in small towns and gully tournaments.

Many were forgettable, but a few stood out.

As well as Iqbal, there was MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, released in 2016. Starring Sushant Singh Rajput as the eponymous lead, Dhoni, and directed by one of Bollywood’s leading directors, Neeraj Pandey, it is a biopic of India’s former captain, Mahinder Singh Dhoni.

It follows his journey from working as a ticket checker at a small railway station in a dusty town to leading India to win their second World Cup in 2011.

A less popular box office film, but no less influential, was 83.

A $34m cricket film

“A sports film is good only when it’s a good underdog story. And 1983 was a classic story of the underdog,” says director Kabir Khan. “I don’t think anything can ever be as exciting as 83 because post-83, we were never the underdogs.”

His 2021 feature film on India’s ascent to becoming world champions in England in 1983, at a time when British bookies were reportedly offering 50:1 against them, is a homage not just to an iconic tournament that is etched in India’s collective memory, ball-for-ball, wicket-to-wicket, but also to the moment at Lord’s when captain Kapil Dev raised the World Cup trophy and cricket shed its colonial legacy and became a part of India’s national identity.

“India is a country where everyone is a self-styled cricket pundit and they’re ready to give even Sachin Tendulkar tips on batting. My goal was to make a film where nobody could stand up and say, ‘This doesn’t look like the original,’” Khan said.

Filmmaker Kabir Khan speaks

Khan’s team spent about two years researching the tournament, even managing to recreate a match – in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, where Kapil Dev scored 175 not-out against Zimbabwe – for which no footage existed.

Actors trained for months, and Ranveer Singh, one of Bollywood’s leading stars who played Kapil Dev, spent two weeks with the former captain; not just learning to walk, talk and play like him, but to also embody his peculiar style of reticent, gentle swagger.

In 83, cricket was stellar. But this cinematic coup came with a pricey tag. Made on a budget of $34m, 83 is one of the most expensive films ever made in India.

Critics praised the film, but four days after its release in December 2021, theatres in India began to shut down due to the third wave of COVID and the film was a box office flop.

But 83 set a new benchmark for cricket films and fired up many cinematic ambitions.

Vehicles move past billboards of Bollywood film '83'

Bollywood has released five cricket films after 83, including Srijit Mukherji’s Shabaash Mithu, which traces Mithali Raj’s journey from a small town to leading India’s women’s cricket team to the final at the 2017 Women’s World Cup, which they lost to England.

“They lost the battle but they won the war against misogyny, against discrimination, against the sorry state of affairs of women’s cricket and inspired an entire generation of girls and women to pick up the sport,” Mukherji said.

There is authenticity in Shabaash Mithu’s cricketing action, but it flopped, as did all the other films.

The jinx seems to be back. Or, perhaps, genteel nostalgia and the underdog story no longer have resonance in a country that has changed.

‘Films reflect society’

In the sequel to every David versus Goliath story, David becomes Goliath.

India is now one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and a cricket powerhouse in terms of viewership and revenue.

Meanwhile, aggressive Hindu supremacism has soared since the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014.

“Cricket and cinema are the last bastions of secularism, but they are also a reflection of our society,” writer-director Varun Grover said.

The India vs Pakistan Cricket World Cup match held in October was a blockbuster. Watched by 35 million viewers on Disney+Hotstar and more than 100,000 people in the stadium, for which tickets were reportedly sold for as high as 5,700,000 rupees ($69,170), the match was won by India.

But the crowds at Gujarat’s Narendra Modi Stadium, named after India’s prime minister , chanted “Jai Shri Ram” – a rallying cry of right-wing Hindus hailing a warrior God – as a taunt to Pakistani cricketers.

Another Bollywood film, titled Hukus Bukus, after a popular Kashmiri folk song, was released on November 3.

Set in Kashmir, it is a fictional story about a Hindu man desperately trying to build a temple dedicated to Hindu God Krishna in the contested Muslim-majority region , but he is up against Muslim politicians with vested interests. His son, a Tendulkar fan, plays a cricket match to get land for the temple.

“Films reflect society and its inflexions,” says Mukherji, “and cricket films are no different.”

India rewrote history a piece of which they had first scripted 28 years ago in June 1983. Mahendra Singh Dhoni thus joined Kapil Dev as a Cup-winning captain and led from the front at the Bankhead Stadium,  Mumbai on a muggy Saturday night battling back pains and aching lets as India eased to a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka with 10 balls to spare. Needing 275 to win, India’s chase was anchored by Gautam Gambhir’s fighting 97 before the player of the tournament Yuvraj Singh took it home alongside his captain. Fireworks blasted into the right as International Cricket Council president Sharad Pawar handed over the glittering trophy to Dhoni and his cheering teammate’s show was promptly showered with champagne and still more confetti. Sri Lanka had ridden a sublime unbeaten 103 from Mahela looked like the Indians had a battle on their hands with Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar back in the pavilion and only 32 runs on the board.

Earlier in Quarterfinal matches played during March 23 to 26. Pak. Beat West Indies in Mirpur by 10 wickets. India beat Australia in Ahmedabad by 5 wickets. New Zealand beat South Africa in Mirpur by 49 runs (3 rd Qr. Final) Australia for the first time in 24 years of ICC World Cup history could not reach the cup-winning stage. On March 29, in Colombo, Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by 5 wickets in the first semi-final. Brief score- N. Zealand 217 Sri Lanka 220/5. Batting first India with Sachin Tendulkar’s brilliant 35, scored 260/9 in 50 over’s but Pakistan was all out in the 50 th over for 231 runs only. And India reached the final for the third time in the history of games.

According to cricket pundits, the latest World Cup was the most successful ever in the history of the global cricket extravaganza. The tournament was a roaring success as much on the cricketing front as on the organizational front. The teams rarely failed to dazzle; different teams and individuals at different points of time registered brilliant feats on the field, enthralling spectators in a fair measure. In all 24 centuries were scored and the total number of runs scored came to 21.333. 1902 4s and 258 6s were hit in all, and the number of wickets to fall was 731. The highest individual score was posted by Virender Sewage of India. When he scored 175 in the inaugural match against Bangladesh.

The World Cup victory was a fitting culmination of Team India’s steady rise over a four-year period during which Dhoni led India to the T20 World title as also the numerous Uno status in ICC Test rankings.

The 11 th ICC World Cup is scheduled to be hosted by Australia/ New Zealand in 2015.

Australia star makes surprise request ahead of T20 World Cup

The Australia star made an unusual request to team management at the IPL, with one eye on the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Experienced Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has revealed he asked to sit out a recent Indian Premier League (IPL) match to give himself a 'mental and physical break' ahead of June's ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Maxwell watched on from the sidelines as his Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fell to a 25-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday, with the Australia star admitting after the match that he had asked team management to omit him from the side.

The 35-year-old has made an indifferent start to the ongoing IPL season with just 32 runs from six innings and the dip in form has seen the highly-rated RCB outfit manage just one win from seven matches and sees them languish at the bottom of the IPL table.

Maxwell shows maximum power in Mumbai | CWC23

Glenn Maxwell hit some towering sixes in Mumbai.

With Maxwell set to play a major role in Australia's tilt for T20 World Cup success in the USA and Caribbean in June, the veteran said he requested to team management that he be dropped from the side so he could reset ahead of the 20-over showcase.

“After the first few games hadn’t gone to plan personally for me, it was a pretty easy decision,” Maxwell said.

“I went to (RCB captain Faf du Plessis) and the coaches last game and said it was time to probably try someone else.

"I have been in this situation before in the past, where you can keep playing and dig yourself into a hole. Now is actually the best time to give myself a mental and physical break. With our results this year, it was quite an easy decision. We haven’t been playing as well as we would have liked as a team, and the results show that.

"My personal results have reflected the results we have had. Pretty big deficiency straight after the Powerplay and the middle overs, which have been an area of strength of mine the last couple of seasons. I felt like I wasn’t contributing in a positive way and it felt like, with the position we find ourselves at the table, to give someone else the opportunity to try their wares and hopefully, someone can make the spot their own.”

Maxwell sparks Australia with record-breaking knock | CWC23

Batting highlights as Glenn Maxwell smashed a century for Australia against Netherlands at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023

Maxwell entered the IPL in great touch, having played a major role in helping Australia to a memorable ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title at the end of last year and backed that up with T20I centuries against India and West Indies either side of the new year.

But it's been tough going for Maxwell at RCB, with his innings of 28 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the end of last month the only time he has scored in double figures.

"I probably just haven't got away, it's as simple as that," Maxwell admitted.

"In the first few games, I felt like I made reasonably good decisions but was still finding ways to get out.

"It can happen in T20 cricket and when it can snowball like that and you feel like you’re not getting the runs, you can start to go searching and try too hard and forget about the basics of the game.

"Even if you look at the first game, I ran one off the middle of the bat to the keeper by picking up the length really well.

"I saw a scoring opportunity and I opened the face (of the bat) a little bit too much, and when you're going really well, that goes just wide of the gloves, you get a boundary and you're four off one and all of a sudden you're away for the tournament.

"T20 cricket can be like that sometimes, it's a pretty fickle game."

India T20 World Cup squad live updates: Kohli, Pant, Mayank set to be picked?

India T20 WC squad updates

As we gear up towards the 2024 T20 World Cup , here are all the latest and live updates including reports, speculations and more surrounding India’s squad announcement for the event.

The 2024 T20 World Cup is set to be played in America and the Caribbean through the month of June, starting right after the completion of IPL 2024 . As the form and fortunes of players in the reckoning move up and down through the IPL, so do the reports and speculations surrounding their spots in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup.

India T20 World Cup squad announcement: Live updates

Virat kohli all set to be picked – reports.

There has been much speculation around Kohli’s place in the T20 World Cup squad. Until Match 23 of IPL 2024, he is the highest scorer with more than 300 runs in five games, but his strike rate has been a bone of contention. However, according to a Cricbuzz report, he is “almost certain” to be included in the squad.

Rishabh Pant the frontrunner in the wicketkeepers’ race

India have a problem of plenty as far as wicketkeeping options are concerned in T20Is. Pant, who made a comeback to cricket after more than a year, has made two fifties already and is looking close to being back to his best.

According to Cricbuzz ‘s report, the Indian management “is believed to be convinced that he is ready for international action”, and is set to be preferred over his several other competitors for the role unless his fortunes nosedive in the coming weeks.

Pace sensation Mayank Yadav to be included?

Mayank has burst on the scene like a bolt from the blue in IPL 2024, consistently touching the high 150 kphs and troubling the best of batters. According to reports, there is a temptation of picking the 21-year-old for the T20 World Cup, however, his fitness – he is currently injured with a side strain – is something the selectors will keep a close eye on before making the call.

Mayank Yadav has gone where very very few players have gone before. ✨ #IPL2024 #RCBvsLSG pic.twitter.com/anCjXjYSs4 — Wisden India (@WisdenIndia) April 2, 2024

It’s a World Cup year, and Dinesh Karthik is again in form

Karthik has announced this will be his last season in the IPL before he retires. He has been in terrific form off late. From five innings in IPL 2024, Karthik averages 143 and has a strike rate of 190.7.

His purple run has raised some noises about a potential T20 World Cup spot. Back in 2022, Karthik forced his way into the World Cup team, riding an outstanding IPL 2022, where he scored 330 runs at a strike rate of 183 as a finisher for RCB. Rohit Sharma teasing Dinesh Karthik over his World Cup selection during the fixture between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru fuelled rumours about Karthik’s probable return.

When will the T20 WC squad be announced?

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is supposed to announce the squad for the T20 World Cup in the first week of May, by when more than half of the league stage of IPL 2024 will be over, giving them ample time to judge the form and fitness of players in their radar.

Eight venues in South Africa have been confirmed for the 2027 Cricket World Cup, according to Cricket South Africa chief executive Pholetsi Moseki.

In addition to the South African grounds, matches will also be played in Zimbabwe and Namibia, who will co-host the tournament.

Moseki told the South African News24 website that the eight South African venues had been chosen for what he described as "scientific" reasons, including proximity to an airport and the availability of hotel rooms.

South Africa's regular Test venues – the Wanderers in Johannesburg, SuperSport Park in Centurion, Newlands in Cape Town, Kingsmead in Durban and St George's Park in Gqeberha – will all host matches.

The Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Boland Park in Paarl and Buffalo Park in East London will be the other venues.

All eight grounds were used when South Africa previously hosted the World Cup in 2003.

Benoni, Potchefstroom and Kimberley also staged matches in 2003 but were not included for the 2027 edition.

The tournament is scheduled for October and November 2027.

Venue guide

Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg: South Africa's premier venue with a capacity of about 30,000. Hosted the finals of the 2003 World Cup and inaugural 2007 Twenty20 World Cup and a semi-final of the 2009 Champions Trophy.

Newlands, Cape Town: The scenic ground with a backdrop of Table Mountain has hosted more Test matches (60) than any other South African ground. Was the venue for the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup final and a 2007 T20 World Cup semi-final.

SuperSport Park, Centurion: The purpose-built stadium outside Pretoria hosted the 2009 Champions Trophy final.

Springbok Park, Bloemfontein: Five Test matches have been played in Bloemfontein as well as two matches in the Super Six stage of the 2003 World Cup.

Buffalo Park, East London: Infrequently used for men's international matches in recent years but it has hosted one Test match as well as being a Super Six venue in 2003.

Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and top-order batter David Warner have picked up injuries at the ongoing Indian Premier League, less than two months out from the Twenty20 World Cup.

Marsh, who plays for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, picked up a hamstring injury and was on Sunday sent back home to Australia to continue his rehabilitation.

The 32-year-old had managed scores of just 20, 23, 18 and 0 from four innings for the Delhi Capitals before he picked up the injury and missed the following two games.

The all-rounder is expected to recover in time for Australia’s opening T20 World Cup match against Oman on June 5, but it remains to be seen if he will return to play for the Delhi Capitals in the latter stages of this season’s IPL.

Marsh is one of Australia’s most important players and will likely lead the team at the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States after doing so in the last two editions.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald indicated last month that the hard-hitting Marsh was an obvious choice for the captain’s role after he performed well during a recent series against the West Indies and New Zealand.

"I think all roads will lead to Mitch, so just got to get that ticked off in certain areas," McDonald said of the vacant T20 captaincy role.

"We're happy and comfortable with the way he's been able to operate with that T20 team.

The ninth edition of the T20 World Cup, featuring a record 20 teams, will be held from June 1-29. A win in the Caribbean would make Australia the first nation to hold the T20, ODI and Test world championships at the same time.

Marsh’s Delhi Capitals and Australia teammate Warner is also battling an injury.

The 37-year-old hurt his finger while batting against the Lucknow Super Giants on Friday. His fitness is being monitored ahead of the Delhi Capitals’ next fixture against the Gujarat Titans on Wednesday.

Veteran player Warner, who will play his last matches for Australia at the T20 World Cup, is likely to be the opening batter alongside Travis Head at the tournament.
