Biography: wwe legends featuring roman reigns exposes striking depths of tribal chief's journey.

Screen Rant interviews the director & executive producer of Roman Reigns' WWE Legends bio-doc, Paul Heyman, about the Tribal Chief's unstoppable rise.

  • Paul Heyman, who directed Biography: WWE Legends featuring Roman Reigns , praises Reigns' magnetic presence and reveals his evolution from a young age.
  • The catchphrase "Acknowledge me!" encapsulates Reigns' inner desire for validation, driving his persona as the Tribal Chief to new heights.
  • Reigns' unwavering belief in surpassing expectations and his fearless approach to challenges showcase his resilience and commitment to greatness.

In the annals of professional wrestling, certain figures stand out not just for their athletic prowess, but for their ability to transcend the confines of the ring and capture the imagination of audiences worldwide. WWE 's Roman Reigns is undeniably one such figure—a wrestler whose journey from humble beginnings to global stardom has captivated fans and critics alike. Now, with the release of Biography: WWE Legends featuring Roman Reigns , directed and produced by the esteemed Paul Heyman, viewers are granted an unprecedented glimpse into the life and career of the enigmatic tribal chief.

Paul Heyman is a luminary within the realms of professional wrestling, standing as a revered figure known for his unparalleled mastery of character development and narrative intricacies. With an illustrious career spanning decades, Heyman has earned acclaim for his ability to shape compelling storylines and mold captivating personas within the tumultuous world of sports entertainment. Screen Rant interviewed Heyman about his role in building iconic wrestler legacies and how the latest documentary shines a light on Reigns' life.

The Early Charisma: A Glimpse into Roman Reigns' Magnetic Presence

In the context of Biography: WWE Legends featuring Roman Reigns , Paul Heyman's expertise shines as he offers introspective reflections on the formative years of Reigns, shedding light on the genesis of the wrestler's mesmerizing aura. Delving beyond mere anecdotes, Heyman provides profound insights into Reigns' innate charisma, which manifested even in his earliest days. With meticulous attention to detail, Heyman unveils the essence of Reigns' magnetic presence, painting a vivid portrait of a future wrestling icon in the making .

Screen Rant: Can you describe the first time you met Roman and what your initial impressions of him were?

Paul Heyman: The first time I met Roman, he was three years old. And his father brought him to a show Panama City, Florida. And he was this little three-year-old boy with the most piercing eyes and child star-level charisma. And you just knew something very special was going to happen with this young man's life. There's an old expression in show business, as I'm sure you're aware. And we in the sports entertainment industry like to point to it a lot. It's about that intangible It factor that to this day, no one can truly describe just that. Just that presentation of a larger-than-life personality that transcends even past the word charismatic. Even at three years old, Roman Reigns had the magic. He just commanded the attention of everyone in the room. And he's just a little three-year-old kid running around as three-year-olds will do. But there was just something extraordinary about him even then.

Screen Rant: Roman has evolved both as a wrestler and a character. In what ways do you think he's grown the most?

Paul Heyman: As a man, as a husband, as a father, as the leader of the head of his family, and leading a much-heralded dynasty to heights that have never been achieved before by any family in this industry. The growth of Roman Reigns, the character hails greatly by comparison to the growth of Roman Reigns the man. I would even suggest the persona of Roman Reigns has to constantly remind himself to keep up with the growth of Joe Anoa'i.

Heyman's recollection not only paints a vivid picture of Reigns' innate charisma but also hints at the profound impact this quality would have on his future endeavors in the world of professional wrestling. Indeed, from the tender age of three, Reigns displayed a rare gift—an ability to captivate audiences and leave an indelible impression that would shape his trajectory in the years to come.

“ACKNOWLEDGE ME”: Unraveling the Core of Roman Reigns' Character

Within the expansive narrative of Biography: WWE Legends featuring Roman Reigns , the documentary ventures into the very heart of Reigns' persona, peeling back the layers to uncover the depths of The Tribal Chief. Central to this introspective journey is Reigns' profound yearning for acknowledgment—a driving force that propels him forward amidst the tumultuous landscape of professional wrestling.

As the documentary unfolds, viewers are immersed in the complexities of Reigns' innermost desires, witnessing firsthand the fervent determination that fuels his relentless pursuit of recognition. Through candid interviews and intimate revelations, the film paints a nuanced portrait of a man grappling with the weight of expectation, yet steadfast in his resolve to carve out his place in the annals of sports entertainment history .

Screen Rant: You dive into a part of this where the phrase "Acknowledge me!" has become synonymous with Roman. Where did the genesis of that catchphrase come from, and how did that impact his character?

Paul Heyman: Well, as I said in the biography, we weren't looking for a catchphrase yet. We weren't at that stage, and we were talking about the final push with a match against his cousin, J. Uso. And as always, with the presentation of Roman Reigns, what's new? Here's something we haven't discussed publicly. Roman Reigns does not give history lessons. Paul Heyman does. The Wiseman brings you up to date on the story to this moment. The tribal chief takes it forward. He doesn't recap. He doesn't review what happened. I did. And then he takes the story to the next level and tells you what's going to happen the next time you see everybody come together, or clash, or fight. So we were trying to figure out, "What's the new piece of information here? What's Roman Reigns' motivation besides just defending the title? What's personal about this family saga that's unfolding in front of a global audience's eyes?" And at some point, half in Joe Anahuat's voice and half in Roman Reigns' voice, he blurts out, "I just want Jader to acknowledge me." And it was as if everyone in the room got struck by the same lightning bolt that carried the epiphany with it. We all knew. We all knew at that very moment we struck gold. It was just, " Oh my God, that's the core of the essence of the being of Roman Reigns, of the Tribal Chief. He just wants to be acknowledged. " And from that moment on, it became the catchphrase.

Heyman's profound insight serves as a beacon, illuminating the underlying impetus behind Reigns' unwavering quest for greatness within the realm of professional wrestling. Beyond the glitz and glamour of championship titles and triumphant victories, Heyman unveils a deeper truth—a profound yearning for acknowledgment that propels Reigns forward on his path to immortality. This driving force transcends the confines of the wrestling ring, resonating with a universal desire to leave an indelible mark upon the world.

With each grueling match and every arduous challenge, Reigns seeks not only victory but also validation—a recognition of his unparalleled skill, unwavering dedication, and unyielding passion for his craft. Heyman's poignant revelation lays bare the essence of Reigns' journey—a relentless pursuit of excellence fueled by an unquenchable thirst for recognition, a quest that transcends the mere trappings of success to touch upon the very essence of human ambition and aspiration.

The Island of Relevancy: Roman Reigns' Unwavering Belief in Surpassing Expectations

Moreover, Heyman delves deeper into Reigns' mindset, shedding light on the wrestler's fearless approach to his career—a demeanor characterized by unwavering confidence and a steadfast belief in his own abilities. Heyman unveils a facet of Reigns' persona that goes beyond mere physical prowess, emphasizing the wrestler's indomitable spirit and unyielding determination to surpass even the loftiest of expectations.

Screen Rant: There's a unique dynamic between the persona the fans see in the ring and the person behind the character. How does Roman balance those two aspects of his life?

Paul Heyman: Seamlessly, as if he was born to do this and with only a few stumbled on the way that he takes great ownership of. I was very determined with this bio to make sure the audience understood that although he is smack dab in the middle of the greatest box office success this industry has ever experienced. That you're looking at the portrait of a man who is still evolving. There's a lot of footage of Roman in this bio from before he took on the mantle of the tribal chief and when you look at the pre-tribal chief era Roman Reigns you clearly see the difference between that presentation and who he is now. And in presenting this bio I wanted to make sure that the audience understood that if you look back on Roman Reigns as documented in this biography in 2024. If you look back two years from now on this you will feel the same way. "Oh, that's old Roman Reigns compared to the new Roman Reigns," because he's constantly upgrading and elevating and furthering himself in every aspect of his being.

Screen Rant: There's a great part of this documentary where we see major challenges that Roman faces in his life. Every wrestler faces challenges, both personally and professionally, but can you speak to the moment when Roman demonstrated extraordinary resilience and perseverance to become the Tribal Chief?

Paul Heyman: A multi-time champion, a multi-time WrestleMania main eventer having accepted the baton from John Cena to run forward as the biggest star in WWE and to come back after a hiatus and abandon the big dog to become the tribal chief in a completely different presentation than he had ever done before. This means a character that doesn't deny who he was but now must on every single level surpass what he had already accomplished and a persona that is several seasons of television ahead of where you last saw him. This is as big a difference as Walter White and Heisenberg. This is the difference between Bruce Wayne and Batman. He is adopting a completely different look, voice, and presentation, all of which need to be an authentic upgrade and evolution from where he was. Because if it's not genuine, it was going to flop, and he risked everything that he had built. And never blinked, and never sweated it, and never worried about it. He approached it fearlessly with the knowledge, not even the belief, but the knowledge that it was not only going to succeed but that it was going to surpass everyone's expectations, even his own.

With each challenge that arises, Reigns confronts it head-on, undeterred by the potential pitfalls or obstacles that may lie in his path. His unwavering conviction serves as a driving force, propelling him forward through the peaks and valleys of his wrestling journey. Heyman's insights offer a glimpse into the inner workings of a competitor who refuses to be bound by limitations, embracing each opportunity as a chance to showcase his unparalleled talent and prove his mettle on the grandest stage of them all. In this fearless pursuit of excellence, Reigns epitomizes the very essence of resilience, inspiring fans and fellow wrestlers alike with his unwavering belief in his own potential.

A Journey Beyond Wrestling: Reigns' Legacy and the Power of Perseverance

As fans eagerly anticipate the release of Biography: WWE Legends featuring Roman Reigns , they are poised to embark on a journey—a journey that transcends the confines of the wrestling ring to explore the depths of human ambition, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of greatness. In unveiling the evolution of Roman Reigns, A&E's bio-doc not only celebrates the achievements of a wrestling icon but also serves as a testament to the transformative power of perseverance, belief, and the unwavering pursuit of one's dreams

Screen Rant: This documentary really gives us an inside look at Roman as a person and how instrumental you were every step of the way. Can you share any behind-the-scenes moments that truly exemplify Roman's commitment to his craft?

Paul Heyman: The biggest struggle that I had in directing this biography was to truly capture the all-consuming passion of his ambition to deliver greatness on a consistent basis. There are so many in any sport that spend their lives dreaming of praying for chasing after that one moment. The game-winning swoosh of the net at the buzzer in game seven of the NBA Finals, knocking the hockey puck past the goalie with seconds to go in the final game of the Stanley Cup. The game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth. For so many, that one moment is the encapsulation of their entire athletic career and what they will be known for not only by their fan base, but by those who know them for their for the rest of their lives because they lived for that moment to that moment. And then in reflection of that moment, what separates Roman Reigns and Joe Anoa'i from almost everyone else I've ever met in my life is that his vision is not towards that one moment. His yearning is to create that one moment constantly and I have only met one or two other people in my life who push themselves to live out a dream so that they can then progress to the next dream. And that the pursuit of the second dream is done with the mindset that the second dream is only the prelude to the third. I struggled to capture that because that's a level of commitment and lust for achievement that most on this planet have never experienced up close .

You famously created and ran ECW, which had some pretty good badasses in it, from Taz and Rob Van Dam to Mike Awesome and Masato Tanaka. How would the Tribal Chief have fared in your ECW?

Paul Heyman: He would have won, the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns would have won the championship his first night in and relinquished it at the end of his run because no one would be able to take it away from him.

Mr. Heyman, congratulations on the Hall of Fame. Any word on who's inducting you? Is it our Tribal Chief?

Paul Heyman: I know who's inducting me. I was given the opportunity to pick the person myself. I have not revealed it yet, just because I'm running through this news cycle as it is. And want to leave something for momentum for next week to satiate the appetite or to go the other way, to whet the appetite as we're heading into the Hall of Fame. But I will bank on this 100% acceptance by even the most discerning audience as to who will be inducting me. No one will question it and it'll make sense to everyone and it will make everyone salivate as to what's going to happen at the Hall of Fame, guaranteed. And I say that as a man who has a placard in his office that says under promise and over-deliver.

Biography: WWE Legends featuring Roman Reigns airs March 31 on A&E at 9/8c.

Cody rhodes’ long road to being new people’s champ needs to be cemented at wwe wrestlemania 40.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The Post’s Joseph Staszewski brings you around the world of professional wrestling every Tuesday in his weekly column, the Post Match Angle .

Cody Rhodes has spent some time becoming the uncrowned People’s Champion, and all signs point to that finally ending this week.

It’s when the youngest son of “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes is expected to finish his story to win the WWE championship his dad never held.

To do so, he will need to defeat Undisputed WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 40’s second night at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.

By doing so, he will not only end Reigns’ 1,300-plus-day world championship reign, but potentially the Tribal Chief era of WWE.

If that comes to fruition, the moment will be Rhodes’ because of the incredible connection he’s fostered with wrestling fans.

Fans loudly expressing their love for Rhodes, 38, forced WWE to pivot from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – the original People’s champion – facing Reigns at WrestleMania to him becoming a babyface star, unlike anything WWE has ever seen.

Hulk Hogan was a larger-than-life hero and a physical specimen with 24-inch pythons that a fan could only dream to be like (with the help of a different type of vitamins).

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin was the beer-drinking badass every red-blooded male wanted to be. But in the real world, you can’t flip off, tell off and assault your boss, keep your job and not end up in jail.

Cody Rhodes has won back-to-back Royal Rumbles.

John Cena, has described his idyllic character as “Superman.” Sure, you can live by the virtues of hustle loyalty and respect, but Cena’s character was too perfect and more similar to a Marvel or DC character than an everyday person.

Rhodes, who is less a character and more simply playing himself on TV, has established a much different dynamic since he walked away from WWE in 2016.

He’s become one of the People. He’s become the fans’ representative and advocate in pro wrestling. By showing a next-level appreciation for fans, Rhodes feels like someone who you could easily approach or see yourself hanging out with on the weekend.

When Rhodes was working even the smallest of independent shows and to this day at WWE events he would take as much time as needed to ensure he interacted with as many fans as possible after shows.

Even as he began his Ring of Honor run as an over-the-top heel, his appearances on “Being The Elite” with the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at Rhodes as his wife Brandi and adorable dogs, Pharaoh and Yeti Pinkerton. Rhodes is now also a father to two-year-old daughter Liberty.

I still remember one BTE episode where Rhodes and The Elite brought boxes of donuts for fans at one of their autograph signings.

Who does that?

Cody Rhodes does.

It’s why fans feel they can ask Rhodes to be the best man at their wedding or do their gender reveal in the ring after a show. It’s why young fans ask him to come to their birthday party or be a part of his entrance during a house show. The difference from almost everybody else is Rhodes says yes to all of these things and tries his best to make it work. He is paying for The Wrestling Club at t KIPP AMP Middle School in Brooklyn to attend WrestleMania 40.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by WWE (@wwe)

Who does that?

When fans were sick of what WWE was giving them and wanted a true alternative, Rhodes was at the front of that with Bullet Club in Ring of Honor and New Japan – even invading Raw, a la DX, on BTE in 2017.

Seeing a tweet by Dave Meltzer as a challenge, they made history with the first wrestler-financed show, packing in 10,000 for the first All In in 2018 and turning that into AEW. It was Rhodes who smashed the Triple H-like throne at AEW Double or Nothing to signal this was going to be something new.

Cody Rhodes does.

Kenny Omega, Nick Jackson, Brandi Rhodes, Matt Jackson, Cody Rhodes

Throughout it all, Rhodes’ mantra has been “do the work.” And it is in that where his power lies because he is someone proving in real life that busting your ass can lead to you fulfilling your dreams, as he got the chance in WWE he was searching for and has knocked it out of the park.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Rhodes looks like the average person – he is easy to believe in and emulate in what fans are trying to accomplish in their lives.

Dress to impress, attack your job with everything you have, be a loving father and husband and don’t be afraid to go above and beyond for others – even if that means wrestling with a torn pec.

Cody Rhodes will face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40.

It’s why fans want and need to see Rhodes – who like all of us isn’t perfect – finish his story because hard work, perseverance and kindness need to pay off, especially after losing last year. They need to allow you to fulfill your dream.

Rhodes is one of the People. He has been their representative in the wrestling world for the past eight years.

If Rhodes wins Sunday as expected, the People have crowned their champion at last.

The 10 Count

We here at The Post Match Angle floated the idea of Chad Gable training Sami Zayn for his WrestleMania match against Gunther back on March 19 and it made for an excellent story and video package on Raw this week. But it still might not be another to dethrone the Ring General and Intercontinental champion.

CM Punk took a torch to AEW again during an explosive interview with Ariel Heilwani on Monday, only adding more wood to the fire on beliefs already out there with the company’s critics about the Elite, Tony Khan’s leadership and business model. Punk has every right to finally want to get his side of the story out there after all this time — and it will be interesting to see if Khan feels the need to respond.

As someone who has all the respect in the world for Becky Lynch, I think she should watch Ronda Rousey’s Ring of Honor match and clashes with Charlotte Flair and then tell me she can’t wrestle. Was Rousey an elite performer? No. But I’ll always be curious if sticking to a more MMA style that held Rousey back was her idea or WWE’s, because it’s hard for me to imagine Rousey not wanting to put the work in to improve.

Inserting Jade Cargill into arguably your best women’s story against your top women’s faction in Damage CTL is perfect placement. It continues to make her feel like a big deal. She will work with five absolute pros at WrestleMania. She won’t be asked to do too much too soon and you can lay the first brick for a rivalry with Bianca Belair. The visual of Cargill, Belair and Naomi – three black women – pointing at the WrestleMania sign was such a powerful one.

WWE is on the verge of using the simple story of Candice LeRae mocking Maxxine Dupree to add new layers and emotions to three talents who have been minor players so far.

LeRae will be a hated heel, her partner Indi Hartwell a heroic babyface for eventually standing up to her and Dupree a sympathetic babyface.

Mr. Take Yo Crew ✊🏽 #Bomaye is for the Dolla. 💰 pic.twitter.com/MnYQluvrNs — Dolla 💰 (@AJFrancis410) March 30, 2024

AJ Francis may be signed with TNA for 2024, but he got his first big post-WWE moment at MLW’s War Chamber show as he beat former world champion Alex Kane and took control of his Bomaye faction. It also gives Kane a compelling post-championship fight for redemption.

With Willow Nightingale now set to face Julia Hart for the TBS championship at Dynasty, Mercedes Mone is still without a first opponent. AEW has a few options. Have a Britt Baker or a Jaime Hayter return in the coming weeks to challenge Mone at Dynasty or the Dynamite after if they come back at the pay-per-view. Serena Deeb can answer a challenge from Mone to get her started with a quality match on her way to eventually facing Nightingale.

Hook’s world championship journey is underway and it will start with being under the tutelage of Chris Jericho after AEW’s first world champion offered his guidance. The FTW champion immediately called out Jericho’s backstabbing past, but unless Jericho turns on Hook for, say, a Sammy Guevara, I’m not sure why he’d have a reason to. It will be interesting to see how having Jericho around changes anything about Hook in the ring or if he pushes him to cheat to win at all. Still, this is a big thing because Hook is finally on a quest for the big belt.

Matt Cardona answering Adam Copeland’s TNT open challenge brought back good memories of Cody Rhodes’s run of open challenges and their match was excellent and filled with drama late. Let’s hope that trend continues before what should be an intriguing story with Malakai Black.

Matt Cardona clashes with Adam Copeland on Collision.

The Ruby Soho, Angelo Parker, and Saraya story has quietly been the best thing to watch on AEW Rampage each week. Steady story progression with a few twists and turns.

What if somehow Dominik Mysterio goes on to lead his own faction against Judgment Day and Rhea Ripley? He sure has a lot of new friends recently.

Extra: The Roman Reigns documentary from A&E is a fantastic look at what drives and molded the character and the man behind it into what he is today as his run may come to an end on Sunday. The Bray Wyatt doc on Peacock is a beautiful, sad and uplifting look at Windham Rotunda as we have never seen him before.

Extra, Extra: Got my hands on a new Macho Man biography, “Macho Man: The Untamed, Unbelievable Life of Randy Savage” , by Jon Finkel, which is out today. I’ll report back when I’m done, but so far have enjoyed the stories from those close to him growing up about his baseball obsession.

Wrestler of the Week

Swerve Strickland, AEW

The path is now clear for Strickland to fulfill his goal of becoming the first black AEW World champion as his one-on-one match with Samoa Joe is set for Dynasty after a fantastic match and victory over Konosuke Takeshita in the main event of Dynamite

Match to Watch

Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins vs. The Rock and Roman Reigns, WrestleMania Night 1 (Saturday, 7 p.m., Peacock)

Yes, Rhodes will likely end Reigns’ incredible championship run and finish his story Sunday, but his feud with The Rock has been far better. Also, this will be Rock’s first true match since he beat John Cena in 2013 at WrestleMania 29. How will he look? Will he upstage Reigns and pin Rhodes to set up another match down the road? Will any new Bloodline members show up? So many questions need to be answered before Sunday and we should get them in the Night 1 main event.

Get to know Edge–the Rated-R Superstar. His lifelong passion for wrestling drove him through the freezing-cold Canadian independent circuit to a white-hot WWE contract in 1997, where he manifested his dream of being a tag team with his best friend, Christian. But despite Edge’s dedication to his craft and death-defying stunts, he struggled to be taken seriously in the ring; and pushed himself to the point of a debilitating injury, forcing him to retire in 2011. In the 90’s , no one was ready for ready for the infamous faction known as D-Generation X. They completely transformed what was possible to “get away with” on live television. Was DX a reflection of the culture at the time? Either way, Shawn Michaels, Triple H and Chyna began a revolution and Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, and X-Pac escalated it to the next level. At time offensive, profane, and rebellious–but always entertaining. DX found fame and fortune along the way–but they would pay an enormous price for success.

This episode shares the story of WWE Legend Lex Luger–The Total Package. Boasting an impressive physique, Luger was given the moniker “The Narcissist” and later “The All American” by Vince McMahon himself. With the help of his family, Angle recovered from addiction and in 2017 he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

The Bella Twins

The Twins are still kicking ass as moms, entrepreneurs, and as WWE Hall of Famers.

Dogged by drama following his controversial match against the legend Bret Hart, Goldberg stepped out of the ring for 12 years. However, Goldberg returned to the squared circle winning his second Universal Championship in front of his proud son before being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018.

Learn the never-before-heard story of the man behind WWE’s greatest character of all time–The Undertaker. Growing up in Texas, Mark Calaway loved wrestling so much he gave up a college basketball career to learn the ropes and became the most notorious villain in WWE history. Starting with his introduction at the 1990 Survivor Series, the 6’10 Undertaker loomed over the WWE for 3 decades, thrilling and terrifying fans and competitors, and amassing a staggering number of titles and records. However, The Deadman is more than his legendary character.

Drew McIntyre will face Seth Rollins at WWE WrestleMania 40. (Credit: Alex Bierens de Haan/Getty ... [+] Images)

WWE made a bold move by booking Drew McIntyre in a world title match at WrestleMania 40 when his future with the company is far from secured.

McIntyre’s WWE contract will expire shortly after WrestleMania , where he will challenge Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship. According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlingNews.co ), however, the former two-time world champion still has not re-signed with the company: “The expectation in the company is he’s signing a new deal and the feeling he knows given everything staying is the best thing for his career now.”

The Scottish Warrior has become one of the hottest stars in WWE at precisely the perfect time. He’s arguably the No. 1 heel on Monday Night Raw and in the midst of not one but two major feuds with Punk and Seth Rollins. Just this week on Raw, his memorable promo segment featuring Punk and Rollins topped out at 2.2 million viewers on a show that averaged 1.73 million viewers :

Though McIntyre certainly can’t take all the credit for such strong viewership, that’s just the latest sign that his disillusioned heel character has helped reignite his career after it began to stagnate during his most recent babyface run. It’s also yet another indicator that WWE, at a time when top-level heels are lacking outside of The Bloodline, shouldn’t let McIntyre walk away.

But McIntyre staying put in WWE? That’s from a guarantee.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

The saga of McIntyre’s next WWE contract extends back roughly a year. That’s when Fightful reported that WWE was “eager to keep Drew McIntyre,” although McIntyre “was going to wait until much closer to the deal's expiration to sign anything as there were a number of factors to consider.”

What a smart move that was.

Whether by accident or design, McIntyre was able to capitalize on that decision to cement himself as of WWE’s most well-rounded performers. But alas McIntyre’s contract situation has featured numerous twists and turns , including WWE freezing his deal, extending it and the two sides being far apart on financial terms—potentially resulting in McIntyre taking a “break” from WWE and pro wrestling as a whole.

McIntyre, too, has been outspoken about the sacrifices he’s made during his career in WWE. He also recently told Newsday (h/t The Sportster ), ““I can say I'm having fun. And I hope to continue to have fun, no matter what. I'm still young, I'm in my prime. I'm gonna be wrestling. If I'm not, you know, one of the featured players, if I'm not making a significant difference to the show, and the business as a whole, then quite frankly, I don't want to be there.”

Surely, McIntyre has been a featured player in WWE, but he’s also been noncommittal when it comes to his WWE future. That’s what makes AEW—as it has been for numerous other marquee free agents—a potential threat to WWE in the McIntyre sweepstakes.

AEW was recently able to land Will Ospreay, Kazuchika Okada and Mercedes Mone in essentially one fell swoop, and the flexibility that AEW offers major stars is a big reason why those three signed there. Ospreay said that AEW made a significantly better offer than WWE, one that was better for his family, which is something McIntyre has alluded to as well. Okada still has the ability to live in Japan after joining AEW. Mone, meanwhile, said she signed with AEW because the company allows her to pursue outside projects , whether wrestling-related or not.

McIntyre is proving his worth to WWE right now, but WWE hasn’t been in any rush to re-sign top stars to high-dollar deals, as evidenced by Becky Lynch’s soon-to-be-expiring contract . While it’s obvious to any diehard WWE fan that McIntyre has evolved into a pivotal top-level star—especially in recent months—WWE tends to operate under the idea that the WWE machine is bigger than any particular star.

That’s true, of course, but it does have the potential to result in WWE losing out on more top free agents because of the assumption that those individual stars aren’t needed. There may be something to that because AEW Dynamite’s viewership has plummeted even after the signings of Mone, Okada and Ospreay, which is likely to make WWE even less concerned about its stars jumping ship.

Mone, Edge, Daniel Bryan and Adam Cole are among the former main eventers who left WWE for AEW only for WWE to be relatively unaffected by their departures. So, that might explain why McIntyre hasn’t re-signed with WWE—because WWE isn’t worried about AEW improving its roster.

They might be right, but with top AEW stars like Swerve Strickland advocating for McIntyre to join the company, the trend of ex-WWE names moving to AEW could certainly continue if and when WWE it doesn’t want to pay McIntyre like the main eventers he is.

While signing McIntyre may not take AEW to the next level, it would be a big blow to a WWE roster that badly needs him.
