Varisu movie review: Predictable family drama that works only due to Vijay's presence

Varisu movie review: it’s a quintessential family drama with all the familiar beats. along with vijay, the film also stars rashmika mandanna, sarath kumar, jayasudha, srikanth, shaam and prakash raj..

It is no surprise that mainstream filmmakers in the south still continue to milk the family drama genre to its last drop. In spite of the myriad iterations of the same story template over the years, it is one genre with a very high success rate. No wonder Vamshi Paidipally plays it extremely safe with Varisu, which marks his maiden collaboration with Vijay. It’s your quintessential family drama with all the familiar beats and it’s largely salvaged by the presence of one man, Vijay , who does all the heavy lifting and makes this a fairly engaging watch. The story is centered around a family that’s headlined by Rajendran (Sarath Kumar), who is one of the biggest businessmen in India. His two sons – Jai and Ajay (Srikanth and Shaam) - look after his business and one among them is hopeful of becoming the heir. One fine day when Rajendran learns that he is suffering from advanced-stage pancreatic cancer, he decides to fulfills his wife’s wish of celebrating his 65th birthday in a grand manner. Rajendran’s youngest son, Vijay Rajendran (Vijay), returns home after seven years for the birthday party at the behest of his mother. He had left home after a disagreement with his father over joining the family business. What happens in the family that forces Vijay to stay back and why does his father makes him the chairman of his group of companies?

Varisu is predictable from the word go but what still works in its favour is the mere presence of Vijay. Having predominantly worked in action films in recent years, it was refreshing to see Vijay have fun in an out-and-out family flick. Here’s a film that taps into Vijay’s comical side in a big way and it works like magic. It’s an effortless performance and one that appeals to even a non-Vijay fan. Every time predictability kicks in, Vijay walks in to distract and entertain with his pitch-perfect performance of a son who becomes the saviour of his family. Apart from Vijay, there isn’t a single factor that makes Varisu what it is. Nevertheless, it’s a film you won’t mind taking your family to this Pongal festival.

The familial moments, especially scenes between Vijay and Jayasudha (who plays the mother) work somewhat in an otherwise largely predictable film. For the family drama angle to have worked even more effectively, the conflict between the brothers should’ve been even more stronger. One thing that the film does manage to get right is deliver exactly what the trailer promised. As a viewer if you had walked in with your expectations in place after watching the trailer, you won’t be disappointed.

Varisu review: Vijay lends life to this otherwise cliched storyline

Director Vamshi Paidipally’s maiden Tamil venture is more of a crowd-pleaser that pays a tribute to Thalapathy Vijay.

Telugu director Vamshi Paidipally is debuting in Tamil with Thalapathy Vijay-starrer Varisu ( Varasudu in Telugu) today, 11 January. Here’s our review of the much-anticipated movie of this Pongal season:

To make sure that he has the right successor for the family business, Rajendran (Sarathkumar) pits his sons against each other. His elder sons Jai (Srikanth) and Ajay (Shaam) have their eyes on the chairpersonship.

However, Rajendran’s third son Vijay chooses to stay away from the chairmanship as he differs from his father’s ideology and modes of operation.

But Vijay is declared the successor to Rajendran after the latter sees his elder sons for who they really are. The second half deals with what happens next.

Overtly dramatic and predictable

Varisu starts like a Vikraman’s version of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018) but in a Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham (2001) backdrop.

It has many problems: Right from the TV serial kind of makeup and drama in the first half to the dreamy Bollywood/Karan Johar kind of massive sets and, of course, the exhausting runtime (2 hours 50 minutes)!

The film is predictable in every frame. It is neither self-contained nor original.

Vijay’s one-man show

But, guess what? Even with all these issues, Varisu still works. For, Vijay carries the film like Atlas carries the Earth on his shoulders for all eternity.

Vijay as Vijay Rajendran is perfect to the T. He lends life to the otherwise cliched storyline.

He is in outstanding form. He looks super, his costumes are fabulous, he dances like a river flow, trolls his own dialogues, and he does comedy and emotional scenes well.

In a nutshell, this is a one-man show. The major strength of this movie is in how damn likeable Vijay is.

Thaman rocks it

Other than Vijay, two more things work in favour of Varisu : Music composer Thaman S and comedian Yogi Babu.

Thaman does a brilliant job as a music director. The background score is sometimes loud but perfect for the respective scenes. He elevates many scenes with dynamic soundtracks.

Yogi Babu’s comedy timing is superb and keeps us entertained all through. In fact, every time he appears on screen, we hear the audience bursting into laughter.

Actors’ performances

Srikanth as Jai, Shaam as Ajay and Sarathkumar as Rajendran are good.

Jayasudha is also good as a mother who struggles between a corporate husband and power-hungry sons.

Rashmika Mandanna does not have much to do but is good at whatever she got. She doesn’t go overboard. Others are okayish.

Do watch out for the “ Soul of Varisu ” and “ Ranjithamee ” songs besides the voting scene at the company.

Grandeur everywhere

Director Vamshi Paidipally does what he knows well: Bringing grandeur into everything.

For example, the villain comes in a helicopter instead of an SUV, and Rajendran’s family stays in Mysore palace in the name of a house, a function bigger than the wedding of Ravi Pillai’s daughter!

However, Vamshi did a laudable job by beautifully presenting Vijay’s loveable character. He also wins by giving back-to-back theatre moments in the second half.

The comedy one-liners in the melodrama scenes help Varisu from not becoming too melodramatic. With a lesser runtime, it would have worked even better.

The cinematography is really good. The computer graphics works could have been better.

Varisu works like a tribute to Thalapathy Vijay and it is exactly what the trailer promised. The second half is a crowd-pleaser. It’s silly, crazy, and entertaining, too, because the marvellous Vijay makes it work!

Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay has been aiming to get market share in Telugu from a longtime. Most of his previous attempts turned futile. Murugadoss’s Thuppakki was his first film that get noticed in Telugu. However, his subsequent films have failed again here. Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Master again gave him some hopes in Telugu. For the first time, Vijay teamed up with Telugu director (Vamshi Paidipally) and Telugu producer (Dil Raju). Interestingly, he opted for a family drama (Vaarasudu/Varisu) contrary to his usual ‘mass’ films. Will Vijay succeed this time and breaks the jinx? Let’s check out Vaarasudu pans out to be.

Rajendran (Sarathkumar) is the king of his business empire – Rajendran Group. His two sons Jay Rajendran (Srikanth) and Ajay Rajendran (Kick Shaam) are his loyalists who drive his company. One among them would be declared as the successor of his business. His third son Vijay Rajendran (Vijay) has huge differences with his father and lives far away from the family chasing his own dreams. Vijay starts his own start-up company. However, circumstances force Vijay to return to the family and take over the family business to fight the mighty JP group’s Jayaprakash (Prakash Raj). The story is how Vijay sustains the company against all the odds and evils.

Performances

Thalapathy Vijay’s role is very superficial. He couldn’t shine despite his stylish performance. Many of his histrionics and trademark style elements in body language and dialogues don’t work. In fact, they put off audiences. He is good in serious and intense scenes. He is good in action scenes. But Vijay’s attempts to make audiences laugh don’t work with mana Telugu folks. It is an absolute disconnect. Rashmika is totally sidelined. Sarathkumar’s role is powerful and the whole story revolves around him. Jayasudha too gets a decent role as mom. Srikanth and Kick Shyam have good roles as Vijay’s brothers. Prakash Raj is shown as a weak villain and businessman who always fails to challenge the protagonist & family. Ganesh Venkatraman is confined to a side role. Yogi Babu’s comedy as a housemaid failed to work. Prabhu as Doctor Anand played the role of Sarathkumar’s best friend. None of the characters have completeness.

Technicalities

Vamshi Paidipally chose a very thin point of family feud that was attempted before several times. He tried to show differences among family members in a top business family and how it impacts their business and family. Neither story nor the screenplay hold strength resulting in a bland family drama. Thaman’s background score is fine. None of the songs are entertaining for Telugu audience. Visuals are appealing. Production values are good, but it is splurge of money on a weak script. Slow paced narration adds to the woes. 

Intention Of Film Father & Mother Sentiment

Right from the start to the end, Vaarasudu is very cinematic and artificial. The film focuses more on the internal conflicts and runs only on tit for tats. But Vijay is ‘mass’ and ‘mass’ is Vijay. Audiences and fans who expect such mass elements from Vijay tend to disappoint due to Vamshi’s toneless film. ‘Amma’ sentiment films and ‘Nanna’ sentiment films have come many. Here Vamshi and Dil Raju wanted to make Bommarillu with superstar like Vijay by changing scenes and treatment and infusing a caproate villain. All this boils down to a routine, dated family drama.

The scenes of tender quotes are all done to death in many of the previous movies. Clearly, the writing team and direction team lack fresh thoughts to project this. The songs and their placements are too forced. They are out of place. The romance with the lead actress Rashmika also look artificial. She just comes and falls for him. The chemistry between lead pair is shown unconvincingly. Thaman’s songs are not entertaining. They have Tamil flavour.

The problem lies with Sarathkumar’s role itself which is portrayed as an emotionless shrewd businessman. He changes/transforms overnight due to a problem. But how could he expect everyone around him to change and adapt to his new characterization. Even Vijay’s character is not fully convincing. It is neither serious nor funny. The protagonist has serious differences with family head and how he ends them is very conveniently portrayed. The ‘Boss Returns’ without much force. The sequence of Vijay going and rescuing his niece is good despite cinematic liberties. This scene helps to change his eldest brother Jay. This is saving grace scene.

While saying one of the dialogues in the second-half protagonist Vijay himself utters this is so weak and says he is waiting for clap-worthy and whistle-worthy scene. This is exactly the feeling of the audiences watching the film in theatres. 

There are many scenes in this lengthy film. But none of them has the required power to give high to viewers. It all goes in a montonous way. The heroic elevation scenes turned out to be flat. The climax portions are rushed and very predictable. The brothers are shown as morons who has muscle but no brains. The screenplay is flat as well. It is a shallow and bland family drama without entertainment. The only blessing in disguise is the intention of the film. It has its soul. But the soul just wanders aimlessly due to lack of body. This Vaarasudu is better to skip.

Verdict: Boring To The Core!

Vijay-starrer Varisu is out in theatres. Also starring Rashmika Mandanna, the film has been directed by Vamshi Paidipally, and produced by Dil Raju.

At the audio launch of the film, producer Dil Raju called it a complete family entertainer that will please Vijay’s fans across all age groups. The film clashes with Ajith’s Thunivu as they are both releasing on the same date. Earlier, Dil Raju ignited some controversy amongst the two stars’ fan base as he said that Vijay was a bigger star than Ajith.

In an interview with a Telugu channel, he said, “In Tamil Nadu , Ajith sir’s film is coming out with my film. In Tamil Nadu, Vijay sir is the number 1 star. Everybody knows that. There are 800-odd screens in the state and I’m begging them to give me more than 400 screens. I’m requesting at least 50 more screens. This is business. Even though I have a big film, I have to beg for screens. It’s not a monopoly, right?”

In 2014, Vijay’s Jilla clashed against Ajith’s Veeram and fan groups of the two stars have been in a dispute since then. The fan battle first came to light in 2001 when Ajith’s Dheena and Vijay’s Friends clashed at the box office.

Trade analyst Ramesh Bala compared it to Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan clashing at the box office and told Pinkvilla, “It is like Avengers and Avatar’s clash in Hollywood and Salman Khan-Shah Rukh Khan in Bollywood.” He added that since Tamil Nadu has around 1000 screens, the division of screens between the two stars has been a point of debate.

On day one of release, the film garnered approximately 67% occupancy, which increased during the day. Morning shows saw 55.6% occupancy, afternoon shows saw 68.6% occupancy; in the evening, the occupancy increased to 72.4%, and night shows witnessed 71.2% occupancy.

Early estimates suggest that Varisu grossed Rs 26.5 crore on day one of release, across India. Thunivu grossed Rs 26 crore.

According to industry data tracker Sacnilk, the film made Rs 17 crore in Tamil Nadu, Rs 5 crore in Karnataka, Rs 3.5 crore in Kerala and merely Rs 1 crore from other territories.

Varisu director Vamshi Paidipally and producer Dil Raju met Vijay on Wednesday.

Indianexpress.com's Manoj Kumar R tweeted, "#Varisu has so much entertainment to offer. #Vijay delivers an enjoyable performance! I liked the self-aware nature of the movie. He further tweeted, "@realsarathkumar has done a solid job. He really sells his act. One minute an aragonite man who thinks he has everything under control, the next is a defeated man, who realizes he has messed up."

Kushboo Sundar was said to be playing a role in Vijay-starrer Varisu. While the actor had also expressed his gratitude for the actor at the film's audio launch, many are shocked that she was not seen in the film.

As per reports, both films are getting 80-90% occupancy in early shows. But the clash also means a share of the market, so the collections of both films might not be huge. It is a long extended weekend and holiday period so these Pongal releases can take advantage of that but it will depend on how Thunivu and Varisu are received.

Ajith and Vijay's movie shows will have the Tamil version of Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham's Pathaan trailer.

Fans in Kerala are excited to watch Vijay starrer Varisu.

The makers of Varisu will host a speical screening on Tuesday in Chennai.

Varisu boasts of songs crooned by Vijay, MM Manasi, Silambarasan, KS Chithra, Anirudh,Jonita Gandhi, Shankar Mahadevan, Karthik, Thaman S, Deepak Blue and Arvindh Srinivasan.

In an interview Vijay’s Varisu co-star Khushbu Sundar said, “While shooting for the climax of Varisu, Vijay was suffering from high fever. He took rest in a garage nearby and completed the shoot. Only after finishing the entire sequence, he got admitted in the hospital.”

Tiruppur Subramanian, TN Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association President, says, “There are about 1100 to 1200 screens in Tamil Nadu, and they will be shared equally between Thunivu and Varisu. There will be no unequal distribution in the number of screens.” Read More .

The Tamil Nadu government has cancelled the 4 am and 5 am shows of Vijay's Varisu from January 13 to January 16. Fans of the actor will not be allowed to anoint milk on the banners of the film placed outside the theaters.

Sreedhar Pillar shared that the total runtime of Varisu is 2 Hours 50 Minutes. 

A tweet from Karnataka Talkies, which tracks ticket sales in Karnataka, claims that the film has sold over 81,000 tickets in the state. "#Varisu has sold 81,500+ Tickets in Karnataka worth close to ?2 Crores," read teh tweet. 

Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai shared on Twitter that Varisu will release in in 400+ screens in Kerala. The state has a total of 643 screens.

Vijay starrer Varisu is set to release on January 11. The film will release in Telugu states on January 14.

Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai told Pinkvilla that both films might churn out an opening weekend of Rs 150 crore in Tamil Nadu. He added that the films could have avoided the clash if the makers or the stars would have had a healthy chat about it. "I personally think, if both the producers would have sat over the table or both the actors could have called each other to avoid the clash, that could have been much better for the industry. But in this case, the competition is big and the Southern stars have big egos about who is number one. Even in Bollywood, I don't see such clashes because there, distributors sit together and discuss but here, star power is overpowering stakeholders, distributors, cinema owners and so, they really don't have a say. A healthy two-week gap would have been advisable," he said.

In Telugu states, Varisu's release has been postponed by three days to avoid a clash with Thunivu. Vaarasudu, the film's Telugu version, will hit the screens of January 14. In Telugu states, Ajith's film is not facing any competition against Vijay but they will have to face Chiranjeevi's Waltair Veerayya and Balakrishna's Veera Simha Reddy.

Veera Simha Reddy is releasing on January 12 and Waltair Veerayya is releasing on January 13, which means that Thunivu will get a headstart in this sector.

Tamil star Vijay’s Varisu directed by Vamshi Paidipally had a theatrical release in Telugu as Vaarasudu today. Let’s see how it fares.

Story: Rajendra group of industries owned by Rajendra( Sharathkumar) will be leading the mining industry along with his two sons Jay( Srikanth) and Ajay( Kick Shyam). On the other hand, to pull down Rajendra, his opponent Jaya Prakash ( Prakash Raj) will be trying hard. At one point, Rajendra’s younger son Vijay( Vijay) who stays away from the family comes into the scene and takes over his father’s business network. Why Vijay suddenly becomes MD of Rajendra Group of industries? Backstory behind Rajendra’s strange decision of keeping aside his other two sons? To know that, you have to watch the film in the theatres near you.

Performances: As usual, Vijay is amazing with his screen presence. His makeover looks as a corporate CEO in formal attires is good. Acting-wise, Vijay did his part decently in the role that has restrictions. His comedy timing and dances in Ranjithamae song will be loved by the masses.

Senior actor Sarathkumar did his purposeful father role quite effectively. His emotional conflict with Vijay is showcased nicely. On the other hand, Jayasudha did her part perfectly as a homemaker and as a mother to three children.

Srikanth, Kick Shyam, Sangeetha among others performed decently in their given roles. Heroine Rashmika Mandanna has nothing much to do as she is used for only songs. Yogi Babu is not utilized properly.

Prakash Raj is alright in his negative shaded role. Other padding artists such as Ganesh Venkatraman and Prabhu are okay in their respective roles.

Technicalities: The cinematography work by Karthik Palani is top-notch as he showcased the entire film on a lavish note. He captured the mood of the film nicely and presented artists beautifully on screen.

Thaman did fine job with the songs. His background score is engaging enough. Editing by Praveen KL is okay but would have trimmed close to ten minutes in the second half for a better viewing experience.

Production values by Dil Raju ‘s SVC and PVP Cinema are rich.

Analysis: Directed Vamshi Paidipally’s idea of exploring the family values through Vaarasudu is good. On the flip side, the film has heavy dose of previous Telugu blockbusters which should have been avoided but he balanced Vijay’s star image with good elevation blocks at regular intervals.

If Vamshi would have worked more on the duration part at the scripting stage itself, the result would have been unanimous. To summerize, Vaarasudu is an emotional family drama that has a few emotional elements to attract the audience during this festival weekend. Vijay’s style and the family related proceedings are assets for the film.

Verdict: Same old plot!

What’s it about?

Business magnet Rajendra (Sarath Kumar) is told he has pancreatic cancer. His prognosis from doctors is that he has no more than 10 months to live. Up until that point, he had dealt with complete brutality, thinking that only his two eldest sons (Srikanth and Shaam), could take over his business empire. Vijay, Rajednra’s youngest son, moved out seven years ago after they had a disagreement.

Because of his terminal illness and the dawning realisation that his older sons are not as perfect as he had once thought them to be, he has declared his younger son Vijay to be the true Vaarasudu (heir).

But the transition is difficult; the other two sons rebel, and the family appears to be on the verge of breaking apart.

Two recent Telugu Sankranthi films, “Waltair Veerayya” and “Veera Simha Reddy,” are focused on the bond between siblings. Similarly, “Vaarasudu” explores the sentiment among brothers. The dubbed version of the Tamil film “Varisu”, titled “Vaarasudu,” arrived in theatres three days after the original version.

It doesn’t take long for us to figure out that Vamshi Paidipally and the other screenwriters just recycled a bunch of old Telugu movies and strung them together. Paidipally tells a story about family values and the significance of a united family, entering the territory of director Trivikram, who is master at such family dramas.

Familiar setting aside, many sequences also remind movies like Trivikram’s “Attarintiki Daaredi” and “Ala Vaikuntapurramlo”.

The patriarch of the family in ‘Attarintiki Daaredi,’ a multimillionaire business magnet, has a epiphany about the importance of living peacefully before his death and asks his grandson (Pawan Kalyan) to bring his estranged daughter to him so that they can be reunited.

Similarly, in “Vaarasudu,” the business magnate patriarch of the family asks his son (played by Vijay) to mend the family’s rifts so that he can pass away in peace.

In a hilarious scene from “Vaarasudu,” Vijay tries to win over the company’s board of directors. This whole thing feels lifted right out of “Ala Vaikunthapurramloo.”

There is a sense of having “been there, seen that” in both the story and the narration. Although it has some flaws, “Vaarausudu” has some advantages. This typical family drama is given a new spin by director Vamshi Paidipally and the script’s authors. There are couple of moving moments in the film. He has an uncanny ability to make us feel all fuzzy inside. As he also did in “Oopiri,” he does at couple of places in this work.

The first half of the film, however, features TV-serial-like sequences and a romantic subplot that falls flat. The second act of the film is where everything clicks. Some major heroic moments occur in the second half. The climactic sequence is also very well done.

However, at nearly three hours in length, the film never manages to justify its lengthy running time. Many unnecessary scenes and slower parts can be cut out easily.

Vijay is in his element. He’s the film’s main strength and delivers a terrific performance. Sarath Kumar is ideal for the part. Both Srikanth and Shaam are fine. Prakash Raj’s characterisation is not strong enough. Rashmika is mostly seen in songs.

Thaman’s songs and background score are both excellent. The sets and camerawork are reek of richness.

Bottom-line: ‘Vaarasudu,’ is director Vamshi Paidipally’s attempt at a Trivikram-style family drama. However, the results are not rosy. Some funny and emotional scenes in the second half really worked, and Vijay’s performance is another plus. However, it mostly gives ‘see there’ feel, and excruciatingly long runtime mar the proceedings.

Vaarasudu Review: Vijay's Version of Family Drama

There was a lot of uproar about how "Vaarasudu" dared to occupy all theaters despite the Telugu biggies releasing for Sankranthi festival. This backlash caused producer Dil Raju to delay the release of the Telugu version. So, four days after the Tamil version's debut, the Telugu version has finally arrived in theatres.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: Rajendra (Sarath Kumar) is the head of a massive business empire. He has three sons, Jai (Srikanth), Ajay (Shaam), and Vijay (Vijay). As a means of selecting the best heir apparent, Rajendra has set his own sons against one another.

Vijay doesn't agree with his father's methods, so he leaves the house. He follows his own path in life and falls in love with a girl (Rashmika).

Rajendra finally gets to know his sons for who they really are when he learns that his terminal illness will not give him many days to live. When he chooses Vijay to succeed him, his two other brothers turn on him. Is Vijay capable of establishing his legitimacy as an heir?

Artistes’ Performances: For a change, Vijay plays the role in subdued way, giving the story more space. His maturity in emotional scenes is commendable. Elevations of heroism and fights are present, but it is his subtle acting that stands out. He also performs comedy with Yogi Babu and has some hilarious moments in a corporate boardroom.

Sarath Kumar as the family patriarch is ideal. Jayasudha steals the show as a mother once again. As Vijay's brothers, Srikanth and Shaam have performed well.

Prakash Raj portrays the stereotypical corporate villain. Rashmika's only role is to appear in songs and a few sequences.

Technical Excellence: Thaman's music is good. "Ranjithame" and "Thalapathy" stand out among his songs. The "Vaa Thalaivaa" song is also used effectively as background music during key sequences.

Karthik Palani's camerawork and production design are both excellent.

The sets are magnificent. Every frame of the film exudes grandeur. Dialogues in certain places are impactful.

Analysis "Vaarasudu," starring Thalapathy Vijay, is the dubbed version of “Varisu”. Though directed and produced by Telugu filmmakers (Vamshi Paidipally and Dil Raju, respectively), the film is primarily aimed at Tamil audiences. Vijay might have thought it would be refreshing to act in a family drama after recently appearing in films with larger-than-life settings.

However, this story written by VamshiPaidipally, Hari, and Ahishor Solomon provides a familiar feeling for Telugu audiences. Because we've seen a plethora of similar films. It appears to be a remixed version of a number of Telugu films, including "Attarintiki Daaredi", "Agnyaathavaasi", "Seethamma Vaaktilo Sirimalle Chettu" and "Ala Vaikunthapurramllo". Such stories have been attempted numerous times by our top stars, including Pawan Kalyan, Mahesh Babu, Prabhas, and Allu Arjun. So it appears to be a very familiar setup for a Telugu audience.

Despite its familiarity, "Vaarasudu" cannot be dismissed casually. Vamshi Paidipally's handling of emotional sequences and actor Vijay's performance both succeed in keeping our attention in many places. While film provides dejavu feeling, it has nice moments as well.

Vijay's attempts to reintegrate his brothers into their family, as well as his scenes with Sarath Kumar, will warm your heart. The second half contains an equal amount of mass elements and comedy. The boardroom comedy is superb.

Vijay's fantastic form, comedy timing, and family emotions are all pluses. Another plus is the rich visuals. The climax is also handled well, and it declares a message that we all have one family, and no matter how imperfect it is, we must be united.

However, the film suffers not only from a routine story and screenplay, but also from a weak villain (Prakash Raj's character is ineffective) and a poor romantic track. More importantly, the film's pace is excruciatingly slow, and it runs for nearly three hours. The film's main antagonist is the editor.

The sequences between mother and son played by Jayasudha and Vijay are not that effective.

Overall, "Vaarasudu" is a Tamil adaptation of a number of popular Telugu family dramas. It looks like a lavishly shot TV show at times. It does, however, make a better watch for this festival season, especially after a heavy dose of action films earlier this week.

Varasudu Movie : What's Behind

Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu which was released in Tamil on 11 January 2023 is released in Telugu on 14 January 2023. The film is directed by Vamsi Paidipally and lets us see what impact Vijay made as Varasudu in Telugu. Varisu OTT streaming partner is Amazon Prime and the OTT streaming will be done after its theatrical run.

Varasudu Movie : Story Review 

Varasudu / Varisu story is about the youngest son of a businessman and how he reacts when he comes to know that his father's empire started falling apart, the moment he came out of the house. Vijay (Vijay), the youngest son of top business tycoon Rajendra (Sarathkumar), walks out of the house due to differences with his father. Rajendra's business empire starts collapsing and his family also falls apart. What will Vijay do and what role Vijay's brothers Ajay and Jai (Shaam and Srikanth), his mother Sudha (Jayasudha),his lady love Divya  (Rashmika Mandanna)  and corporate rival Jaya Prakash (Prakash Raj)  play form the rest of the story. 

Varasudu Movie : Artists Review

Thalapathy Vijay looked uber cool and ultra-stylish much to the delight of his fans. He performed in a youthful and energetic manner showing exuberance and zeal as a youngster who takes care of his family and resolves problems. He looked natural and realistic in his comedy and action sequences. He danced well showing race. Rashmika Mandanna got a limited screen presence and much to the disappointment of her fans she is confined only to songs and dances.

Sarath Kumar, and Jayasudha did full justice to their roles as parents. They showed good emotions and expressions and made an impact on the viewers. Shaam, Srikanth performed well in the roles of brothers. Prabhu,Prakash Raj, Khushboo,Yogi Babu,Nandini Rai,Ganesh Venkatraman performed according to their roles.

Varasudu Movie : Technicians Review

Varasudu story selected by Vamsi Paidipally and written by Hari and Ashishor Solomon is about a youngster solving the problems faced by him in his family as an heir apparent. The film's story offered nothing new and Vamsi Paidipally treaded on the predictable line right from the start till the finish.

Vamsi Paidipally took his own sweet time, to narrate the film's story establishing the characters and highlighting each and every role in the family and the business setup that plunged into problems until the arrival of the heir. The entire narration tested the patience of the viewers.

The second half also treads in a similar pattern but the only saving grace is Vijay's heroism is elevated in few action sequences. For all the richness, the predictable plot with no real interesting developments ended up testing the viewers' patience. But much to the relief of the viewers, the climax has been hurried due to various reasons.

Thaman's songs are appealing and attractive. The songs are shot beautifully. Thaman with his background music made an impact on the viewers. The cinematography of Karthik Palani added value to the scenes. The scenes  turned beautiful and colorful. The dialogues arev monotonous, followed a template but are in sync with the storyline. The editing of Praveen KL could have been more crispy and tight as there are many repetitive scenes that impacted the flow. Sri Venkateswara Creations, PVP Cinema's production values are grand.

Varasudu Movie : Rating Analysis

Altogether, Vamsi Paidipally turned Vijay into Varasudu. Though the film released late and had a delayed release in Telugu, the feel-good family elements may appeal to all. Vamsi loaded many feel-good elements and family scenes to turn the film into a Sankranti winner. However, the slow pace, routiness, lack of emotional connection, and few artificial scenes loaded with insipid screenplay and direction played the spoilsport. The 80s kind of story, film's length gave endless torture, testing the patience of the viewers to the core.  Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 1.5 rating for Varasudu .
