Christopher Quintana ’24 PhD

Philosophy PhD Graduate Works at the Forefront of the Ethics of Technology

“Christopher Quintana ’24 PhD sees the value of philosophy for the world,” says Villanova University Professor of Philosophy Sally Scholz, PhD. Dr. Quintana, who graduated from Villanova’s Philosophy doctoral program in May, specializes in the philosophy and ethics of technology. His dissertation, Characterizing Digital Design: A Philosophical Approach, evaluates user interface and experience design through Aristotle’s ideas of virtues, especially the virtue of practical rationality. Specifically, he explores how technology design can impact and undermine an individual’s capacity for independent practical reasoning. What happens to us when so much of our social and personal activity is mediated by technology? How do our relationships to technology change?

William "Bill" J. Zee, 50, of the 120 block of Front Street in Lititz was found dead in the PA Game Land located near US 322 and Pumping Station Road in Elizabeth Township, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Eric Bieber. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:38 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Zee was reported missing and a search was launched around 8:25 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, as police detailed in an initial release and as Daily Voice previously reported.

He was found dead by a "passive hanging" and the manner was suicide, the coroner wrote.

A couple of weeks ago, we told you that a woman had filed a lawsuit against three men , alleging that she was the victim of a sexual assault inside a dorm room at Villanova University in 2022. The woman and the three men were all students at Villanova University at the time. And now one of those three men — Elijah Katzenell, 22 — has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting her. Katzenell was scheduled for trial at 9 a.m. on Monday in the Delaware County Courthouse. Instead, he has pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault, a felony.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed in the case by the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, Katzenell sexually assaulted the woman, identified only as “C.A.,” in his dorm room while she appeared to be unconscious. The affidavit of probable cause alleges that Katzenell’s roommate admitted to “assisting” Katzenell during the sexual assault and that the other male student in the room recorded video of part of the assault, a video that investigators have seen. The roommate and other male student weren’t charged with any crimes.

Katzenell’s guilty plea was part of a negotiated plea deal, explains his attorney, Arthur Donato. As part of the plea deal, confirms the DA’s office, Katzenell will receive seven years of probation, with the first year served on house arrest at his home in Maryland. He will be allowed to leave home for work. He must also register as a Tier III sex offender — that’s the most serious level — under Megan’s Law and maintain that registration for the rest of his life.

Katzenell and his roommate no longer attend Villanova University. The other male student’s LinkedIn page lists him as a current Villanova student, and the university did not provide Philly Mag with his enrollment status when we requested it.

As Katzenell begins his sentence, the woman’s civil lawsuit is proceeding in Philadelphia’s federal court. She’s seeking damages from Katzenell and the other two male students. For more on the lawsuit, which also names as defendants Villanova University and various business entities connected to an off-campus student apartment building, read here .

Pennsylvania college student reportedly raped by Uber driver on campus in dorm building, police say

Driver identified, banned from school as investigation continues

WPVI logo

VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania -- An investigation is underway at Villanova University after a student says she was raped by an Uber driver on campus, according to the director of public safety.

The incident was reported to the university on Friday.

Campus police say the female student says she was raped by a male Uber driver in the Commons residence hall complex during the overnight hours of September 13th to 14th.

The victim says after being dropped off, the driver then entered the residence hall and raped her.

Police have identified the driver who has since been banned from the university as the incident continues to be investigated.

"Sexual assault is a devastating crime that has no place in our society. We are appalled by what's been described, and banned the driver as soon as this was reported to us. We will assist law enforcement however we can," said Uber in a statement to Action News.

The residence hall building is located on Lancaster Avenue -- a busy road dotted with dorms, fraternity houses and restaurants..

"It's surprising. I would say Villanova does a very good job of locking down the campus and making sure students are safe," said senior Catherine Leary.

"Awful that it happened. I'm surprised it happened here on Villanova," added student Mark Bonutti.

Police urged students to always contact public safety's emergency line at 610-519-4444 if they witness any concerning behavior.
